Solid prof! Engaging class discussions, interesting reading selections, and a great attitude. Very genuine and helpful professor.
He is the best prof. I have ever had so far at UVic. His lectures were engaging, interesting, and fun.
English is not my strong suit and I got an A- in his class. I didn't learn much because we didn't really cover any English fundamentals, which was odd the the most basic ENGL class at UVic (other than 115..). Lectures were energetic and engaging. ALWAYS available for help. Sean gives students the opportunity to get a good grade if you take it.
He's engaged and fun. Really had a good time in his class. Go Thundercats!
He is best post-secondary teacher I've had, by far! He makes dull material interesting. When he is doing examples on the chalkboard, he is really creative and gets the class involved. Plus he took all the students to the campus bar for a drink on the last day of the course. Can't complain about that.
He made classes very interesting and made it very easy to understand writing. However, your writing won't get better unless you sit down with him during office hours and get him to better critique your work. His little side notes did not boost your mark much more.
Best prof ever! He genuinely wants his students to succeed in their academic writing. He is so passionate about English and it rubs off on the students. Also, he's hilarious. Lots of small assignments, tough-ish marker but gives constructive feedback and tons of help if you ask. If you have to suffer through English 135, do it with Sean Henry.
Good prof. Really nice person, and very interesting, engaging lectures. Very little English is learned in the class, and the exam was surprisingly difficult. Stupid course but might as well take it with a nice guy.
Great prof who makes even the most boring material interesting. He clearly loves what he does and teaching it. Has a good sense of humor. A bit of a tough marker but provides constructive criticism to help you in the long run. His classes are pretty laid back as well. Highly recommend this prof.
Worst English Prof I've had at UVic so far. He would go on rants about whatever topic was bothering him that day instead of teaching the course material. The only things I learned about the plays came from my own study. He marked ridiculously easily all term and then gave me an exam grade 5 letter grades lower than my lowest mark in the course.
He's a pretty good prof. He is very generous with extensions and always willing to provide extra help if needed. His exams can be surprising difficult considering how laid back the classes are. He tends to mark really easy at the beginning of the class then gets harder as the class goes on. His classes tend to go off-topic on a regular bases.
Dr. Henry is a delightful teacher who is passionate about Shakespeare. Come to class, read the plays, and you will be rewarded for your effort. Also, it's nice to come to class, relax and have fun! Dr. Henry makes that possible.
Sean Henry is the most entertaining and passionate prof I've encountered thus far at UVic! He makes you want to read Shakespeare and knows a great deal about the subject matter. He made me love plays that I've studied in the past but never really understood. Take his class if you can, I doubt you will regret it.
Sean is passionate and insightful about all things Shakespeare. He facilitates exellent class discussions and inspires students to learn more. Be careful to follow the MLA style guide though - he will mark you down for including things like title pages. All in all, he is a great prof. He made me want to major in English.
Best prof I have had at UVic so far. I strongly recommend people to take his courses. I was never very happy about the way he marked my assignments but I didnt mind because he was such an unreal teacher all around. I enjoyed every one of his classes and I'm not a geek so that tells you something.. he's just awesome.
Personally I really didn't like him as a prof. Hard marker, critical, went off topic too many times and believes his opinion is always correct. I wouldn't recommend him.
I thought he was great. The younger students fresh out of high school complained he was a difficult marker, but in my opinion, he was straightforward, and made a crappy required course worth taking. Would definitely recommend.
This guy is hilarious which makes this course well worth taking. He can make anything engaging and he genuinely cares about the success of his students. He's a bit of a tough marker, but you will learn what he's looking for and in the process, take your essay skills to a whole-notha-level! 10/10!
This hot prof is hilarious! Not a hard marker, use Active Readers a lot.Hardly teach anything though...He lets students talk and the atmosphere is great. If you must take 135, take his.
Really intersting prof and he is a fair marker. Just remeber to bring your textbook with you every class and read the articles before class!
Really great prof! He's really hilarious and witty, while making the course material interesting! Definitely recommend him, but DO THE READINGS.
Sean is one of my favourite profs at UVic. Not only is he extremely helpful in the class, but he is willing to help you with other class assignments as well, and he's hilarious. He is straight forward with what he expects from you. Do the readings though! Pop quizzes are a favourite of his. I would definitely recommend this prof!
Hilarious and very knowledgeable. Class is boring class in general, but Dr. Henry was an excellent teacher.
great class
He is fantastic. Especially if you can appreciate a great cynical wit and self-depricating sense of humour. He is a wonderful professor, he really made the class for me.
His concepts and explanations were clear and a fair maker that gives helpful criticism. He's a funny guy with a cynical and humoristic view on the things; he made it is worth the 8:30 class :)
Lovely person and lecturer but when I went for feedback it was vague. You only needed 100 level English to take the course, I felt that I should have been able to get more guidance on how to excel, where can I get constructive advice if not in class? I'm not obsessed with grades, but I like to do the best possible and I didn't feel like I could.
Good teacher, makes the class interesting and has a great sense of humor. Not to bad when marking often times wont get over 70% on a paper which is pretty solid, sometimes feels like if you put in minimal effort and will get a solid grade.
135 being the first english class I took at uni, i wasn't sure what to expect. Sean doesn't take any disrespect from his students, but if you participate in class, do the readings, and are respectful, you will do well. Sean is a great prof, he is quirky, and enjoys teaching. I don't always take english 135, but when I do, I take it with Sean Henry.
Sean was my favourite prof. He is hilarious, has so much interesting opinions to add, and made a very dry class fun and engaging. He makes you work for a good grade for sure.
I found Sean Henry to be a below average prof during by first year. He was nice enough usually but had a couple freakouts. He's a bit of a jerk and constantly talks of his ex-wife. I'd avoid him if possible
Very clever, easy to enjoy his classes. You cant get away with not doing homework however.
Very clever, easy to enjoy his classes. You cant get away with not doing homework however.
Sean is a very passionate professor and truly cares about his students succeeding in the course. He makes engl135 less dry with his witty personality. Make sure you do your readings to prepare for in-class discussions. I'm happy to say that I've learned quite a bit in this course. Thanks Sean! (p.s. you will not regret a class with this prof)
Sean Henry is an awesome teacher who is upfront with you about what he's thinking. he is, in few words, a very funny man. i Thoroughly enjoyed taking his class even though i didn't like the class itself. he made each class fun and worth coming to
Henry is a hilarious and witty guy, and he tries to make the most of some very, very dry content. I thoroughly enjoy his classes and the discussions that take place. He has high expectations for writing. Don't use your phone in class, and be respectful.
Started off really not liking him, but he grows on you after a while! As long as you don't use your phone in class he's a nice guy. Respect him and he'll respect you. Be prepared to read and discuss lots, but usually the content is super interesting! He's a pretty tough grader, and gets really uptight about formatting, but not too bad overall.
Sean Henry knows his stuff. However, he is prone to mood swings and can sometimes be disproportionately rude to students for checking their phones etc... He marks more difficult than high school teachers, obviously, so expect to adjust your standards of grades before this class. English 135 is useful for all aspects of university, but it sucks.
Sean is really funny and a really cool person. He didn't give sufficient feedback to many of us in ENGL 135, frustrating. Often gives positive feedback only, and only a mediocre grade. If you're fine with a B, take this class. Looking for an A? Good luck.
Sean is a clever and funny guy, but he did have a few freakouts during the year. Don't use your phone whatever you do! He is a bit of a tough grader but not ridiculous. Eng135 is dry stuff and he realizes this, and does his best to make it engaging. Do the readings if there are lots of vocab words because he'll quiz you. If not, just skim it!
Dr. Henry is a good professor overall. He makes the dry content slightly more interesting, and his witty personality keeps class entertaining. He prepares you well for the final exam and the work load isn't unreasonable. Fair warning though, it's extremely unlikely you'll get higher than an A on anything, no matter how much effort you put in.
Although English 135 is one of the two choices of mandatory first year english class, I don't regret taking it. You have to write a few papers but you are given plenty of time to finish them outside of class and if you bring a rough draft to him, before the due date, he will look it over. By far the funniest teacher I've had at UVic!
If he catches you on your phone you're done for. He is an interesting teacher, however; a very hard marker.
Teaches you what you need too know. If you ask for an extension he tends to give you them. Really funny, hates teaching the class as much as you hate taking it. Recommend him for anyone take ENGL 135 with him.
Great prof. Excellent teaching style and very interesting to hear lecture. Be carful in class and do not use your phone, Henry does not tolerate it and will send you packing. Overall one of the better english profs in the department
Sean turned the dry material of ENGL 135 into a class that I looked forward to attending. Each class was filled with discussions as well as his awkward but funny sense of humor. Minimal note taking is required and the workload for assignments is quite light (he grades them fairly harshly, but nothing crazy). Overall good prof
I was worried that English 135 was going to be boring and dull but Sean Henry made it kind of fun. He takes boring material and gets an interesting conversation going. Be prepared to read the assigned readings and show up to at least 80% of the classes. Not many assignments but he grades the few ones pretty hard.
Sean makes the boring English 135 bearable. He uses humour, which is sometimes slightly inappropriate, to have the class pay attention. He has no tolerance for electronics, so just don't bring them. He is a tough grader, and I got the same mark on everything I handed in; despite the changes I made based on his comments. Class is super easy.
Sean Henry was good at teaching a dry class and making it somewhat interesting. But he can be a little rude and intimidating at times if he is mad or doesn't like you. In class he was pissed off and made the comment "I can't fire you but I sure as hell can fail you". If you particpate and stay off your phone and do homework, he's ok.
Sean Henry does an excellent job of making English interesting, even when working with somewhat dry or boring texts. He encourages and facilitates classroom discussion to make sure people have a comprehensive view of his texts. The only thing I'd make a complaint of is his commentary on assignments can be a bit sparse.
Sean Henry goes above and beyond in seeking the success of his students both in and out of class. He is fun, engaging, and passionate about even the most trivial of lessons.
I really looked forward to going to his classes - he understands that no one chooses this course so tries to make it as educational and engaging as possible. Do the reading and participate in class and he loves you. Don't bring electronics, and do not take your phone out during class, he has zero tolerance for it and it makes class awkward.
This was a roller coaster of a course. Don't use your phone unless you want to be publicly humiliated (fair). If you don't engage in class he'll just stare at you very awkwardly until someone speaks up. He cusses a lot and says somewhat derogatory things to students. I think I would rather take Henry then someone boring, even if you leave annoyed.
I've taken several classes from Sean and they have always been lovely. He is an entertaining man who will keep you engaged. Bit of a tougher marker but is clear in how he wants you to improve things.
Sean is great! His classes are fun but he makes sure to teach helpful content. I often take my work to his office hours before handing it in and he is very helpful. I would highly recommend his class!
Sean is quite possibly the best English teacher Ive had. He makes classes entertaining and engaging (a difficult thing when its a mandatory class that no one really wants to take). He marks fairly and my writing has improved more in the few months Ive had him than in the entirety of highschool. I would really recommend taking his class.
He is gem and is a funny prof. He tried to make students engage in discussion. He always smiles in class and his character is like one of Disney characters.
Sean is the best English teacher I have ever had. I dreaded taking 135 because its supposed to be boring, but Sean made me look forward to every class. He is funny, engaging, and makes dull content come to life. I also think that my writing really improved this year thanks to him. And if you're a theatre major he will love you!
This is the second class I've taken with Sean Henry and he's always very engaging. I had a very busy semester and this class was doable on top of everything else I was doing, but it still posed a challenge. Sean is super supportive and interested in his students as people, not just numbers.
If I had to retake this course again, I would definitely choose Henry as my prof. He grades papers quickly and fairly. He is also happy to see his students during office hours and replies to emails fairly quick. He is an easy going prof that tries to engage his students through jokes. Although sometimes unfunny, he means well.
Stay off your phone if you want him to like you. He has a temper but is generally a nice guy. He will like you if you go to his office hours and show interest in the course. Keep an eye on due dates - he didn't tell us our rough draft was due because it was in the syllabus and only a few people handed it in. He makes a DRY class relatively fun.
His classes exemplify that 'holy grail' combination of witty yet edifyingly rigorous lecturing.
Super super super nice and understanding professor. He really cares about you. He also gives good feedback.
Prof Henry does not give good feedback and grades very harshly. I advice anyone who actually wants to get something out of this course to take it with another professor
A legend, nice guy... marks fairly, and gives great feedback. He's also so nice. Classes can get a bit dull if you don't engage
Made ATWP 135 not totally boring. He describes it as a hostage situation but both the prof and the students are hostages and terrorists since nobody actually wants to be there. "The class you take if you thought you were done with math" - Sean Henry
He is super outgoing! If you don't interact it can get pretty stale. I found communication easy with him over email and in person. It's kinda like that one English teacher from high school, but in university. Only 10 assignments total and the toughest one is the research paper of your choice (1500-2000 words).
There are a lot of papers and reading, but Sean's energy is fantastic. He's not easy on the grades but gives you something fair. Not a class I would take for an easy A. He's energetic and fun and is there for you. Ask him for help understanding your grade; not always the most direct with the feedback, but you will improve.
Great prof! Don't buy the textbook--you can find all the texts he uses online for free. Bit of a hard marker, but clear in expectations and feedback, makes class interesting and makes lots of room for conversation. Chose some great texts.
He is such an amazing person and you can tell he genuinely cares about students. If you give enough time for an extension, he will kindly let you have one. He gives detailed feedback, and he is also super funny in class recordings, videos, and his assignment criteria. Never really had much of a genuine laugh like how I do with Henry's class.
very funy & taugt gud ewngwish
This class was a bit harder than I expected but overall enjoyable. I did not buy the textbook he recommended since all the readings can be found for free online or in the bookstore.
The best professor I've had so far at UVic. Rarely do you find a prof who not only cares about the source material, but is passionate about teaching. I never thought I'd find Shakespeare interesting, but he found a way to make it happen. Always had a funny anecdote or interesting thought at the ready. He sort of looked like a skinny Mr. Weatherbee.
He made class interesting and very fun to attend. To be fully honest, you didnt really have to read all of the material to participate in class, but it mattered for the assignments. There were a lot of assignments, but you were given reasonable amounts of time to do each one. Dont do them last minute or you will struggle.
He's a tough grader and will often nitpick details that don't really affect the outcome of the written work. For example, he's marked me down for using "it is" instead of "it's". His comments on your work don't reflect the mark given either, often saying "good paper, avoid passive voice" or something similar, followed by a 70% grade. (Part 2/3)
Overall, if you're needing to take ATWP 135 or any other English course to fulfill a program requirement avoid taking one with him as the prof. it will make your semester a little bit less stressful than it already probably is.(Part 3/3)
Hilarious and passionate! Amazing readings that I thoroughly enjoyed. He will take attendance as there is a participation/preparation component so make sure to be there ready to discuss. The other reviewer made 3 two-star reviews which are bs. He is a fair marker and ofc he wants the class to engage!!! One peeve: he does NOT give marks above 90.
Sean is phenomenal! He is so funny and caring about his students. Do not buy the anthology you can find all the poems online. You do need to buy the novel though. I love the peices he has chosen they are well thoughout. I took 101
He was nice he just yelled at us and it was scary. He does really care about English though, so good for him! It was mid.
Pretty awesome prof. He doesn't give a lot of feedback on assignments but he grades fairly. Overall funny guy and very available during office hours. Pretty mild work compared to most classes. An assignment due about every 2 weeks and he's very good about giving extensions when needed.
Sean is an excellent teacher, he's really nice. You don't need to get the textbooks, you can easily download pdf copies online. Found a pdf document of the entire book in two minutes online, along with all the other textbooks. He's pretty tough grader though, one really bad test or essay can mess you up, but I would definitely take him again.
One of my favourite profs. Had such a good semester with him. Engaging and knowledgeable. If you have to take first-year English, take it with him!
Sean actually made me like English for the first time in my life. Assignments were 50/50, some were fun others were tedious, but I think that's probably the case for most ATWP classes. Overall the workload is very manageable with one big research essay due near end of term. If you have to take ATWP 135 take it with Sean!
The class wasn't the worst but he's a weird guy. Some of his analyzations were so far fetched and he couldn't explain them when we asked him to elaborate. He mentions his ex-wife incessantly and he's super pretentious, but he gives good feedback on assignments. If you have to take english with him it's not the worst but there are better options.
I loved Sean Henry, he was an amazing prof for 101, he loved interacting with the class and his students before and after class. He is a tough grader for the assignments, but his personality and energy makes up for it. If you are able to take his first year class, I suggest taking it with him!
Dr. Henry made me enjoy poetry in a way I never had before. His ENSH 101 class was engaging and benefitted from class participation. Although he is a hard marker (nothing above 90), he gives good feedback and is always open to talk about your writing. Don't make the same mistake I did and buy the anthology as you can find all the poems online.
Henry's class was ok, he is a really strange guy and can be very intense. Constantly talks about his ex-wife and all the readings have something to do with women or sex. Classes get very repetitive very quickly. Harsh marker, no matter how hard you try to improve on papers you always get around the same mark. If he's having a bad day, you'll know.
He's funny and it's obvious that he's passionate about teaching English. He gives good feedback on assignments and is lenient on extensions. A bit of a hard marker, but it's very possible to get a good grade in this course. Overall, a great guy! If you need to take ATWP, take it with him.
Sean is my favourite prof I've had so far at Uvic. Really kind, quirky guy and super funny, always laughed in class. He's very helpful and responds to emails quickly. If you need to take ENSH101, absolutely take it with him. Assignments are easy, with lots of time to complete. No final exam either. Don't buy the textbook, all the poems are online.
Like actually a good guy. I know this is a requirement for most majors so like as boring as it seems listen in class. The stuff he has to say is pretty helpful and can help you a lot. And don't be scared to ask questions, he always answers them to the best of his ability in a clear way.
Sean's a silly man with a flair for the dramatic, and is a great prof. I found myself looking forward to the lectures and was never staring at the clock begging to be done. He DOES grade pretty harsh and you wont get above a 90 on *anything*. Do the work & listen to his feedback and youll do well. The workload was incredibly manageable. Would recc.
He's very insecure, every second he's making a joke so he can fulfill as desperate need for validation. The jokes themselves are either very crude or pretentious and often get in the way of actually teaching. He doesn't back up the claims he makes on literature, and if his self esteem is low he will be snarky in class, and you will get a bad mark.
Best prof I have ever had. He truly cares about his students. Very respected. I wish I had more profs like him. Discussions in this class were some of the best of any class I've taken. Thank you Sean! Do not buy the textbooks (but buy the novels) for this class, the short stories are on Google for free usually.
i would've loved this class a lot more if he left the readings open to interpretation more, felt like he thought his perspective was the only correct one! overall wasn't a bad class, but took some getting used to since it's a first year course. you do NOT need to buy the textbook, all the readings were accessible online!!
Sean was such a great professor and I would 100% take a class with him again. He is very entertaining and tries to make lectures fun for his students. However, he is definitely a hard marker. I thought my writing was good but my average mark was around a 75.
Worst professor ever does not care about his students at all marks insanely hard.
No matter how hard you try you'll always end up in the 70's.
This course was extremely misleading. I wanted to learn poems/ short stories. I did not want to spend 600 dollars on a course to read painfully horrible stories of racism and sexism. THESE STORIES NEED TO STAY OUTSIDE OF LEARNING. Please do not mislead students in the future as I would have avoided a class hating and bashing men for 3 hours a day.
Sean is very friendly, and helpful if you need assistance with your writing. The feedback he gives on each assignment should be noted carefully. I did find him to be a bit of a tough-marker, but I'm also willing to admit I'm not the greatest writer.
He is very passionate about teaching and has a ton of energy. Very entertaining lectures and lot's of class discussion.
Very interesting man. Get to know him a bit, and you'll like him a lot more. Show him respect and he'll show you the same back. He will not give you anything above a B. Do not buy the textbook or any materials; you can find everything online for free. He will find a way to link every material to something sexual which can get pretty uncomfortable.
Sean Henry is an amazing professor!! He's kind, funny and his lectures are the best! The class is very participation heavy, but it's so fun! The themes in his ENSH 101 class were so interesting and very diverse! Overall he's just a great guy and a great professor, 10/10! He made my first year-first semester english class so much more bearable!
