Professor Ireland is amazing! I had him for 21a and HAD to have him for English 1. He grades very fairly, gets along very well with his students, and always has a few funny stories to tell. You barely even have to pay attention in his class to get an A.

Ireland is the best! He has a real passion for what he is teaching, but he doesn't try to shove it down your throat. His enthusiasm is contagious. Just be on time with assignments and show up to class and its an easy ride.

Hard grader? are you guys kidding me? He doesn't discriminate, factors improvement and helps you when you need it. He's helpful, caring and articulate. Not a hard english class at all. If you can't get an A and you TRIED there must be seriously something wrong with you.

TAKING HIM RIGHT NOW! i don't think his tests are easy at all! it's pretty hard, but he is very dedicated in teaching. He marks our work, everyone's work, twice. Which teacher does that?! He loves literature and will probably influence you to like it too. once again, his tests and midterms and papers ARE NOT EASY. trust me on this.

He is the professor of English. He is a very cute and patient person. Professor Ireland is the guy you want to take for English. This class discusses lectures and requires a lot of reading, but there's always class discussions. His essays are simple, just do the essay format he want you to do and you will indeed get a decent grade. The finals are a possible nail-down.

He's a decent teacher with a lot of experience of reading and writing. You can't expect him to teach you how to write an essay, you supposed to have enough experience from you previous classes. Otherwise, he's chill and fair grader. Also recommended for those that have a heavy schedule.

You have to take him for English 2! He is the nicest teacher I have. I dont know why people are saying he is a hard grader because he extends all his assingments and I did all the essays the night before and got an A! Highly recommended!

He is the prof you want to take for Eng 1. The lectures are crystal clear & class discussions are constructive. There's 3 essays (3-4pgs), a research paper, & a few pop quizzes here & there on the readings (less than a page on your interpretation of the reading). Also allows you to rewrite essays for a better grade. Definitely taking him for Eng 2!

At first you will find this class very easy. But do not relax. Because he has pop quiz. Must read his reading! Mid term is easy but final is hard. mid term is true or false but final has matching. The exams test you the drama and poetry structure. Just do everything he asks you to do.

Great professor! He gives very few quizzes and test, but they are usually pop quizzes. As long as you read the material you should have no problem passing. Everything on the tests and quizzes you will learn in class or read in the book, there are no surprises. I would definitely take his class again.

I took him for English 1 during the Winter and he was soon adorable :D We had 3 quizzes, 2 essays, 1 midterm, 1 final and finally a research paper on the topic of your choice. Great professor. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE TIME FOR THE FINAL EXAM! MY CLASS was at 9:30 am and I was not aware that the time for the final exam was at 8:00 am (the time was not in the syllabus). I missed 1 hour and 30 minutes of the final exam:( so pay attention, read, study and u will pass but make sure to know the time for the final!

The classes consisted of him talking about the reading for the entire time with the occasional conversation about grammar. No brainer: enroll in his class.

Great guy. A lot of short readings, but all very interesting. His way of assigning papers is to give a long list of different prompts that you can choose from or suggest your own, which makes it really easy to explore what you want to write about. He doesn't require much in the papers, and is an easy grader. Taught me a lot about grammar!

Professor Ireland has been one of the most influential teachers I've had at SMC. I hated English and writing papers, that all changed when I took his class. I definitely recommend him if you want to get yourself ready for a four-year institution. His lectures were very thought provocative and engaging. Get ready to read a lot!

Okay, prof Ireland is the best English teacher, his lectures are very inspiring and not as boring as some English teachers are... He uses two books that were really needed for class, he gives about 4 essays for the whole semester he gives amazing feedback and really shows you how to fix your writing skills I learned a lot from him thank you, prof!!

You can tell he really wants everyone to learn, especially about grammar (taught me more than any teacher). He loves hearing the students pov on things we read & he does not judge at all. Very philosophical, so if you write about it in your papers you will get an A on it. There is a lot of reading & that's what the papers are based on.

I took this class with professor Ireland, and I've got "A ". He is the best professor that I have in SMC. I believe the textbook was very hard for me because English is my second language, but the Final exam was very easy. I like him, and he encouraged me to learn English specifically grammar.

TAKE HIM! He's amazing. Can sound philosophical at times but that's what makes the class more interesting. Attend, write decent essays, just pay attention to the useful things he teaches and you'll get an A. I found the text online and would look at it in class. Reading HW every session. Read b4 class so u can participate and show him u care. Pop quizzes on readings sometimes

My fav professor of the semester. This was a combined course of ENG101 and 104. 101 consisted of teaching grammar. Extremely helpful and will make all your papers better. 104 consists of readings from the book and in-class disscusions to help write your paper. 3 Essays from the book, 1 Research Paper, and 1 Final Exam based on grammar. Fabulous teacher! He is remarkable and gets really imterested in the poetic side to English. His test and quizzes are fairly simple, he post a study guide before hand that shows everything you need to know for the test- theres no surprises. He doesnt grade harshly on the 4 (2-4 pages) essays you have to write either. Loved the class & professor.

Professor Ireland is just an overall good man. He is down to earth and practical, gives inspirational lectures, and grades easily. There are class discussions every day for a chapter of the book you were assigned to read beforehand. I would say this is the best English 1 class at SMC.

The greatest professor I've ever taken! He was very understanding and caring professor in this difficult time and gave us a lot of time to finish the papers. I learned so much about literature and liked the materials he used in the class! Lots of reading and discussion, so be ready. 4 papers, 11 discussions, no exams. 100% recommend!

Hands down the best! Took him for winter session; gave great feedback for rough drafts, got straight to the point of the readings. I recommend attending meetings, it helps tremendously (especially for poetry unit). Responds relatively fast to emails, GREAT personalty, friendly attitude! No books needed! Amazing! His feedback on rough drafts was really helpful; be sure to attend meetings as that really helps in giving essay ideas. Really good in making the class be engaged and does not lack enthusiasm; but, better be prepared to read extensively and stay motivated!

Requires a lot of reading but all the books were interesting so they dont feel like a lot. You can get them done in 2-4 days. Just do all the discussions with full requirements and essays arent too bad either. This is coming from a person who has always hated english. Professor Ireland actually made me enjoy english.

Very straight forward curriculum. We simply read criticisms and then would write three paragraph reviews on them every week. The class additionally had a total of four essays which were graded very fairly. Overall a great professor and class!

Took him over the winter and it didn’t feel overwhelming. He’s super clear in his grading and the readings are really interesting. They are long so I would just look for an audio and let it play. Really caring guy and approachable. Attendance isn’t mandatory but very beneficial. Would love to take him again. Take him. You won’t regret it!

Professor Ireland's class consisted of 3 criticisms every 2 weeks which at first were difficult but once I worked harder and focused I realized they were not difficult just a lot of reading for each one. The essays were 3-4 pages and we were able to use the criticisms. He is not a tough grader and looks more for your point of view and analysis.

Took him during winter of 2021, the best english professor so far! Very engaging, and it really helped to attend non-mandatory lectures during the pandemic. Lets us share essays for feedback before turning them in, and if you show u care and put in the work with him, he will work with u. Love his attitude, tone, and manners :)

It's clear that Prof. Ireland is very passionate about what he teaches. He goes back to the basics (grammar, formatting, clarity, etc.) to solidify students' foundations. Nicest Professor ever! This class was hybrid for me, but every time I went I enjoyed coming to class and listening to our discussions about the texts he would assign us! Although there was a lot of writing done in this class, it was pretty manageable! He provides very good feedback that is helpful. There was no tests except for the “final exam”.

Professor Ireland is very inspirational. All of his lectures are so fun to listen to and he's always so passionate about the material we've read. A lot of short readings and useful materials about writing college papers (such as how to use a semicolon, dash, block quote, etc.). Overall great and chill professor!

Professor Ireland made my English 2 class a breeze. His lectures are very entertaining and despite getting up early for class, I always looked forward to attending. Be sure to keep up with online work, but it should be hard to fall behind; assignments are due every other week. Professor Ireland wants the best for his students!

Professor Ireland did a great job of lecturing the units with literature because he points out on certain plays, novels and poems with different topics using as a guideline for writing essays. I enjoyed his class learning about criticisms and make me feel better critical thinker. I'm going to miss his class.
