He makes you work, but your skills improve. Cs are pretty easy to get, an A or B is not unless you work for them. Don't talk during his journal time!
He is very helpful. You will write alot but he will give you many opportunities to do well bc he will tell you everything you need to correct on your paper.
He is a good teacher, but you do have to work hard if u want an A or a B...C's are easy to get...He is obsessed with Journal Time so RESPECT THE JOURNAL TIME!!!! lol...
Really cares about you expressing yourself in your private journal. laid back, but don't use your cell phone! I would take him again in a heart beat!
Great teacher, allows lots of time to write papers.
DO NOT USE CELL PHONE IN CLASS!! He is overall pretty easy..you have all year to correct your papers...he takes journal very seriously...class was pretty enjoyable and laid back....not too helpful but is understanding on work..allows you to create your own style and go with it
I had him for 101 and i am glad i had him. He prepares you for 102 very well. He is not an easy A, but a good eng teacher. he challenges you and helps you get past those challenges through out the course. if you looking for an easy A don't take him, but if you want to prepare for 102 then take him
Prof. Marsh is a really cool teacher. His class is easy, you just have to keep revising your essays to get an A. He gives about 7 essays and you have to keep revising to do well. He also likes to journal and is passionate about it. Very accessible and will answer any questions. Overall great teacher espec. if you like to revise and journal.
The class is pretty laid back. All you do is write, revise, write and revise. He loves journal time too. It's a good class to prepare for Eng 102, but not an easy A. (On average, only about 3 A's per class) I recommend him if you want to improve your writing skills.
If you like to write this class is for you. At the beginning of the year he tells you the person with the most drafts will get the best grade. If you don't like to write things over & over I wouldn't recommend him. I usually wrote 3-4 Drafts per paper & the most I did was 6 and I got a B. He's a really nice guy & helpful if you ask for help.
hard to pass

you will learn a lot with this professor. He is firm but cares. If you have questions he is more than willing to help. Demands quality, which comes from quantity.
He is easy if you go to class and listen to him. You type your papers in class so it is less you have to do outside of class. He depands a lot from you, but it's worth it 100%!! He keeps class relaxed and fun and I would recomend him to anyone!

very helpful... easy class
He is an awesome teacher if you like to write. If you do not like to write then do not take his class. If you want to learn how to write take him because he will make sure that you can before he passes you. He is very understanding and helpful and i enjoyed this class overall.
Helped me wirh my writing skills
TEACHES CLASS AS THOUGH IT IS A HONORS CLASS- TOO MUCH WORK DUE IN TOO LITTLE TIME
He is a wierd guy and doesn't give many A's and caters to those who like to write.
Treat him with respect, act like a college student, and introduce yourself. Marsh is about effort and improvement... he's glad to help and will make 102 much easier. (He thinks all the parking tickets are a load, my kind of teacher.)
He is pretty simple, everything is displayed in the syllubus. You know what you are going to write and when it is going to be due. He likes to write and a paper is due every week. Its not hard, its just a lot of work. He rarely give A's or F's. DONT HAVE YOURE CELL PHONE OUT IN CLASS, HE GETS ANGRY. Respect him and he will respect you.
I did not like him! He does not give much direction. Ppl say he does not give out many A's.. Its b/c he tells u to write the paper the way YOU want but then grades it the way HE wants & is very sarcastic about it!
VERY INTIMIDATING!!! You have to write 15 drafts just to get an A. He expects you to come to class and be on time. Assigns a lot of work. But he did prepare me for ENGL 102 very well. DONT USE YOUR CELL PHONE IN CLASS!!!
Honestly I did not like him at first. He gives a lot of work and seems to grade harshly. But he is just trying to prepare his students for the proficiency portfolio and exam. An A is possible but you have to show up to class and be on time and show him respect and that you are interested. Work hard!! And no cell phones!
It's a hard course for some, but he's a really good teacher!
Absolutely horrible! Marsh needs to teach ROTC or something. He treats his class as if you're in the army. Do not schedule a class directly after his, you'll be LATE! You gotta sign the "guest registry" at the last minute of class. Absolutely no cellphones. Remember your noise discipline during quizzes. Needs to implement a rubric for his assignmen
He is tough, but he is very helpful if you put forth effort. He does like a lot of drafts, but he is pretty leinent with due dates, and he helps prepare you well for English 102
One of my favorite teachers so far. The tests are easy if you read your story and you basically get points for sharing your opinion. Definitely take him!
TAKE HIM! HE WILL DEFINITELY SHOW YOU HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO WRITE!!
He's a pretty nice guy, a little too sarcastic. He's just different so alot of students hate him, however he is a good teacher and he has every students success in mind.
Some people think he is too strict. But where did these people go to school? Do you want to go to a class where the prof is not in charge? He's ok, just respect his little rules and he will respect you.
I highly recommend that you don't take him. He is extremely unhelpful and rude, and he provides no clarity as to why you received the grade he gave you on papers. It's almost like he starts you out with the lowest grade possible, and you will never be able to receive an A. Don't take him if you want any feedback, or if you take your GPA seriously.
Mr. Marsh is a very strict teacher but if you actually use his advice, you are guarantee to pass ENGL 102!! I failed the proficiency in Fall 09, but Mr. Marsh's foot in my ass helped me pass. If you have to take a English teacher, TAKE THIS ONE!!!
Yes, Marsh is a tough teacher, but everything he tells you is gonna help you pass the proficiency. He's kind of an ass but i think if he wasn't like that, i wouldn't have passed. Don't email him though, he never answers. I took this past spring and hated him but looking back he helped me tremendously.
He is a really good teacher. He is very different but has everyones best interest. He knows his stuff and in a way is laid back.I enjoy his class. He wants us to be prepared for ENG102.He does his best.If you show effort he loves that and it helps your grade.Do your work, he and you will be happy.
This was probably the easiest class I had while in college. Go to class everyday and you get an A. Its that easy!!
Warning: He hates cell phones in his class. Other than that he was a very good teacher and was really helpful to those who reached out to him. Very laid back guy. Highly recommended.
Is a really strait forward guy. You take notes one class a week and do group work on the other. Lets you out 30 minutes early most of the time but dont dare take out a cellphone in his class or you will be dismissed from class. His midterm and final com directly from the notes he gives and isnt very difficult. Pretty easy class for the most part.
He is a hard teacher, but he really helps you. He really pushed me to be a better writer. He comes off as kind of rough, but if you want to do well, he wants you to do well. If you want to take a good teacher, Marsh is good. P.S. He really doesn't like people to have their phones out in class.
I found him to be an ecellent teacher, but yes he is pretty strict. I don't know what people expected, but whatever. He has a good way of explaining everything to you without giving you the answer. He is constantly trying to make the student work for what they got, and for that he is a marvelous teacher. He's very sarcastic too. :)
He is awesome! Very intelligent, love his smartass attitude! He will make you think critically, and if you practice a good work ethic, he will help you with your essays. He gives lots of other easy points for participation, etc. He really will help you if you ask for it. He makes you work for it, but he makes it enjoyable too!
Quiz on Reading/Discussion Group Mondays. Take notes on Wednesdays. Very straight-forward. Do the readings, study the notes before the exam. Not a difficult class. Boring yes, but aren't most English classes boring? He's a relatively easy going fun guy. :) Take him
GREAAT TEACHER. grades fairly.
DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS. He will kick you out like he did to one of my friends on the last class....over all a great teacher...he is very helpful. be prepared to write a lot!
He is such an awesome teacher, i loved him! His class is really simple and he grades very fairly. We went to the lab a lot, which gives you plenty of time to work on or finish your papers! Take this class!!!!!
He is such an awsome teacher andhis class s very fun and easy. He is also a very helpful teacher when it comes to writing that one essay paper that we have. He also wants you to pass his class, you just have to go to class and participate in it.
Very easy class, straight forward. Mr.Marsh is very nice and helpful. The best English teacher ever. I wished he taught 102. Read your syllabus daily and just turn in your work on time. Make sure you go to class, you might miss something important.
I enjoy him teaching though he has dry humor
He is strict with phones. Not a big deal though otherwise all he does is help you prepare for eng 102... Essays are usually fun to do for his class. Hes a very fair grader just do what he wants and show up! if youre a good student and show up? Youll leave with an A, B at the worst.
I will recommend Mr. Sean Marsh to everyone. He is a very good and a very helpful teacher. Yes, he gives you a lower grade at first but to motivate you to study more and be a better student. Those who complains are the LAZY ones! Believe me! English is my second language and I made an A in his class. He is one of the best! Two thumbs up for him.
This class was my hardest one of the semester because of this teacher! He was very strict, rude, and unclear at times. I made a C in his class and worked my butt off! He would give a quiz on a story...and then go over and discuss in class. It should be the other way around!
If you don't have to take him, I wouldn't recommend it. He is extremely rude and critical. He never has anything nice to say. Also, He is never clear on instructions all he does is read directly off of his power points and expect you to know what to do. He will kick you out of class if he even sees your cell phone so watch out.
Mr. Marsh was a great educator. He looks for the best in everyone. YOU CAN NOT BE LAZY. He looks for work ethic and attendance! If you are one looking for an A and not willing to put in the work; you will fail! Overall, I recommend him to anyone who wants to learn to write and write well!
GREAT teacher! Because of his class, I am now a confident writer. Attend every class, follow his rules, & use the syllabus to succeed. He cares about your grade only as much as you do. Students who complain about him usually don't value their education & don't do their assignments (or have cell phone addictions.) Use databases and Writing Center!
He is the best!! He is clear at all times and he wants his students to succeed. The class is not an easy A but if you do your stuff and put some effort in your work Mr. Marsh will highly appreciate it, which will also reflect in your grade. I would highly recommend him to everybody. He makes writing fun and you can learn so much from him.
Mr. Marsh is one of the best English teachers that i have had so far. The class is easy and fun. If you do all of your work and follow his instructions you will pass. He is not a big fan of cell phones!(of course he's a teacher)! Mr. Marsh is very helpful,he answer all questions with detailed answers!I would recommend him to everyone! He's the best
If you follow the instructions Mr. Marsh provides, come to class, and do the readings, you will do just fine! I didn't have to strain myself to make an A in this class... just a little time! Mr. Marsh has good humor, but he also does not tolerate laziness or phones! Very respectable teacher! Do not listen to others, this class is NOT difficult
Like every other classes you will have to work a little more for an A. if you make sure you can correct your mistakes everytime you present your draft and work as he tells you to its easy to score good. Inaddition, he is quite helpful regarding subject matter.
it was one of the best classes i took last semester. if you go to the class and want an A just becase it is english then his class is not for you.he was very helpful throughout the semester. if you follow his simple guidelines, you will end up an easy A.
This course was really quite fun. You read some pretty great novels, a few of which you may have read in HS. After each reading you have a pop quiz and a graded group discussion. (Groups selected at the beginning of the sem.) Only one essay paper. He does have some strict rules for cell phones and order in the class room but that wasn't a big deal!
Good luck is all I have to say.
I've taken him for 101 and 102 and I'm planning on taking him for 230. He's not hard and gives you amazing feedback as well as more opportunities to meet him in his office for further discussion on essays. PLEASE GO TO CLASS. If you don't you will fail. We basically did the bulk of our essays in class! Essays are spread apart so you have time!
Every time I would leave his class I would be overwhelmed about the about of stuff we have due. You will write an excessive amount of essays. nothing compared to other professors. His test are about 10 questions each and are graded hard. Sarcasm is his middle name lol.
He is a great professor to take for 101. You have three portfolios due. Two of which have three papers and the last one contains one that goes along with your final. You will have journals to do, one outside of class per each one you do in class. His class is not hard, show up, do the work, and don't procrastinate and you'll do fine.
He calls you out for things. I would never take him again
Respect him and he will respect you. Care and he will care. Work and he will work with you. Pretty simple formula.
He was alright, he kinda gave me the heebie jeebies. He made us turn in 3 essays at a time in a portfolio, which was ridiculous because we got 1 grade for 3 different essays and that was awful and effected my grade. 7 essays total. He's a freak about having your phone out in class and calls you out if you are even 1 minute late.
I took Marsh for 101 and 102 and I do have to say, I'm happy I made the choice. Every other class we spend a few minutes doing journals, he tells you what we'll discuss in class and very clear on what he wants. I really would recommend him
I highly recommend to take him for Eng 101 and 102. He gives good feedback on your essays after you turn them in. He pushes you to do better on the essays and work hard for your grade. Just have a good grasp on grammar and schedule appointments at the writing center to get an A. After all, what's Eng 101 going to be without a lot of papers to do.
There is a lot of writing in his class so it can be stressful at times. Proof your papers, follow his instructions, and put away your phone for him to respect you. Overall helpful and great teacher!
He is kinda creepy, but sometimes funny. If you don't want a sarcastic teacher don't take him. He grades papers pretty easy, but his in class personality is just weird. Easy B though
Easy grader but A LOT of work. You absolutely cant miss a class he has a schedule for the semester you have to print out and he follows it EXACTLY. He requires you to do 6 papers not including the proficiency. Each "portfolio" has three papers in them each and you get a grade on the portfolio. He also gives quizzes and journals which are easy.
Take this class!! He gives you many chances to help your grade. There are readings every week, but the quizzes are super easy. This class is mainly participation and a lot of group work. There is only one essay and it is your choice of topic based on the stories you read. Easy !!!
Respect begets respect. You care about your grade begets he cares about your grade. Wish I took him for 101. Easiest college class I ever took. Easier than music appreciation. Beware of pop quizzes. Follows exact schedule he gives you. Almost always get out early. No cellphones
The class is pretty much the same thing every week. You read 1-2 stories a week and get quizzed on them upon entering class. Then you get in groups the next day and discuss the book and do journal. One big paper its only 1500 words . Dont procrastinate on it. Very easy class overall if you show up. I would take him again if I had to choose.
He has an odd sense of humor so he might only be appealing to some, but i liked him.
It is very clear what you need to do to pass this class. You are assigned 3 portfolios for the semester, each portfolio containing 3 papers. Do not be frightened by this. He is a very lenient grader with portfolios and is willing to help. DO NOT WAIT LAST MINUTE TO START PAPERS OR JOURNAL ASSIGNMENTS!! Follow his directions, guaranteed A or B.
He's a great teacher. Just don't be stupid- show up for all the classes (you are graded on participation each day), read what you're supposed to (the earlier the better), and pay attention to the SYLLABUS. If you do what you're supposed to, you'll do great. Only one paper due at the end of the class. And show some respect; it goes a long way.
I had Sean a few years ago. His world lit. class continues to inspire me. He's an incredible teacher (he actually teaches - yes, real pedagogy). Attend all classes & read what you're supposed to. He truly challenges you to think deeply about the texts. If you do what you're supposed to and take initiative (this is college) then you'll do great.
Great teacher ! he seems strict but I think he comes off that way so he can get respect from everyone. You have to read in order to pass the weekly quizzes but the midterm and final is literally word for word from the notes! Easy class and he grades easy! Take him!
Great professor! He is clear on what the task is and when quizzes are. Just read and participate. Meet with him in person about your one essay and he will be very happy. Not difficult. Enjoyable class. :)
As long as you put a good amount of effort youll get a B. If you want an A make sure you have about double the min word count and at least 9 drafts per paper. EDIT!!!
Great teacher. If you follow the guidelines for the portfolios, you have a better chance of passing. The quizzes are tough because their not multiple choice, youre going to have to right out the answers. Overall easy class.
Only reason he got a 1 is because I couldnt give him a 0. He is very condescending and treats us like were 3. Anytime someone asks a question he either misinterprets it or acts like we should already know. We have a group assignment every other class and a huge essay at the end that he gave almost no direction for. 0 out of 10 would not recommend
Theres a reading due at the beginning of the week with a quiz upon class arrival. After you get into groups, answer questions in very limited amount of time and have to present answers. The 5th group judges other groups and decides a winner. That group will judge next. He doesnt answer questions accurately and tries to call you out on class.
an amazing person and teacher, if you show up to class and do what you are told you basically get an A. makes the information we learn fun and fresh and doesn't mind helping you out if you ask for the help. 10/10 advise anyone to take him!!!!!!
He is easy to get along with, and will help when needed. gives class time to work on papers and will help during that time. open notes quizzes sometimes and gives good feedback on papers
He is respectful; however he has a lot of busy work, his open book quizzes are actually harder then the other quizzes, and youll write 6 papers in total. If you want to pass, show up, take word for word notes, and DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. Also, HE DOES NOT ALLOW PHONES PERIOD. Youll survive him, but you may not like him.
I do not recommend this professor. Be ready for lots of essays and he grade them fairly hard and the pop quizzes too. If you do not study hard you will fail them. Be ready for some feedback on your papers. You definitely have to work hard for your grade.
I had to work so hard for my B. Get ready for like 6 essays, many group assignments, and quizzes. His directions for the essays are not very clear and if you ask him to explain he asks like you should know. He calls people out in class and do not get on your phone in class !!! This class was so tough. I would NOT recommend taking him again.
It takes him a while to respond if you have questions about the assignment. He assigns a lot of work, so get ready to write about 5-6 essays for the semester. Pray that your essays are looking for because he grades them hard.. for what reason ? i dont know. I took him 100% online which made him harder to access. All in all, i do not recommend.
Professor Marsh has to be one of the best professors at SLU. He is very attentive to his email and responds quickly. You get a good amount of time to work on each essay and can submit drafts. If you email him to look at your drafts he gives great feedback. Will definitely be taking another one of his classes in the future.
Took his online class. It was one of the easiest classes ever, just a lot of reading.
This class was very hard for me when I realized he only put one major grade in basically the whole semester then I was already at a C. He does not give a whole amount of work but each few weeks 3 portfolios are due. He is not that clear about his grading style which is why you have to pay very close attention to the prompts.
He's cool but follow the directions of the essays. He does not like phones, he will go off if you're on it in his class. But overall a really cool guy.
Communicate! Ask him for advice and let him read your drafts. His prompts can be kind of broad compared to his rubric overall great professor.
There were SO MANY papers we had to write, but overall, he was very nice and sometimes funny, I just wouldn't take him again.
You read a chosen passage, take a quiz, then discuss it with your group to present your analysis and be graded by peers. He is very against technology while expecting a digital essay as well. Unfortunately, I had to withdraw his class due to him not being accommodating to my medical excuses for having the flu and my grade suffered because of this.
His attitude in class is disrespectful, making it difficult to engage with him. If you ask a question he is dismissive/sarcastic, it made me feel stupid just asking for clarification at times. If you're a competent writer you'll do fine but he grades nitpickingly. The class quiz grades were low bc his questions are too specific w no multiple choice
Homeowrk only takes maybe 2 hours a week. Usually a Quiz (10 pts) and a discussion board (usually your own opinion) and maybe a journal some weeks. One essay total and it's basically your choice of what story to write about that we covered and the topic as long as it's some sort of literary analysis.
You have to write nine papers, but he doesn't grade harsh. You also will have quizzes every so often.
Professor Marsh was great! He gives you a lot of papers but gives you plenty of time to do them. If you have any questions, just make an office visit! He's happy to look over your drafts when asked and he gives great feedback. Just be involved in the class and you'll do fine!
Mr. Marsh I would definitely not take again. You would write a full page in class journal then have to go do another one at home. We had nine essay's. Not even that the work was hard he was just rude and do not think to walk in with a phone he will get very angry.
every week was the same week. on Tuesdays, you take a quiz and then go into groups to have a group assignment that you will present in front of the class. then on Thursdays, you will write journals for 10 minutes and after that, you write notes for the midterm/final. you do have one essay assignment but you have the entire semester to write it.
I 10/10 recommend. All you do is read a passage on Thursday and take a 10 question quiz that Tuesday. Group activities are done. Only one essay at the end of the semester. Easy class, just definitely read the passages because he asked the most random true or false question for the quizes
He was rude and very unprofessional, 9 essays and a couple of quizzes, would not take his class again if he was the last English professor on earth.
Don't take this guy.
Dr Marsh was great! He gives you a lot of papers but gives you plenty of time to do them. If you have any questions, just make an office visit! He's happy to look over your drafts when asked and he gives great feedback. Just be involved in the class, write your journals, use your syllabus - he has a detailed one that tells you when things are due.
dont take him
I do not recommend him at all. He's not understanding at all if you have anything going on, and he will not respond to your emails or anything. He also makes smart remarks and doesn't really explain things well.
Would not take again. Very rude and makes smart comments. So much writing for an entry class. Doesn't like you using technology. Locks the door and won't let you in until 10 minutes has passed. Save yourself and take anyone but him. Amy Acosta was so much better the next semester.
I'd recommend him. Just if you take an online course get ready to read a story a week with a quiz, and a writing or two a week. There's a decent bit of work but he's a really good professor. Easy A as long as you pay attention. The writings are opinion based so pretty easy.Understood that your opinion is different and will grade fairly.I Recommend!
I took his world literature online course. There were no essays besides the one on the final exam, but even that one was very manageable. There was weekly homework assignments which included a quiz and a discussion post. As long as you did the reading you should have a A in this class. I was able to do all assignments the day they were due.
Professor Sean Marsh is rude and sarcastic. He hates technology but demands digital essays. Once, he took my phone without letting me explain I was using it for a hotspot. He also scolded a student for taking a book photo. Overall, his behavior is unprofessional and makes class unpleasant. Avoid his classes if you can. I wish I could say more!!
Dr Marsh was very sarcastic and kind of rude but he really wasnt all that bad. I personally wouldn't take him again because he of his attitude but he does give you the tools to succeed and although there were 9-10 essays, they were not difficult at all. Overall he is a good teacher, but if you dont like to be told what to do, avoid his class.
Marsh's Canvas class is not organized well. He does not give clear instructions. He is not tech-savvy so students have had a lot of trouble getting into assignments. Lots of hand writing papers.
