He enjoys teaching philosophy. He is actually pretty young, and has a doctorate. I enjoyed attending his class and seeing his antics, but some people, the ones that didn't want to push themselves to get greater understandings, some of them slept.

He is extremely enthusiastic, witty and helpful.
Very enthusiastic, very fun, lots of energy, and loves to talk about his kids.
Really nice guy. Talks really loud though. kinda makes it easy to pay attention. really pasionate of his work. not too much homework. subject mater kinda too critical but hey its a critical thinking class.
Hes the nicest guy! really funny in a dorky kind of way. I think hes happy if you just come to class. lots of quizzes. be prepared it makes him happy.
Exams and quizes are difficult but he is very willing to help you understand the material and work with you to do so!
Mr martin got me hooked on philosophy, he tught my firt Phil. class and I owe a lot to him. He is a great guy who is always excited about what he is teaching. I still chat with him often and I hope he helps create other philosophy majors.
All teachers should be this passionate about the subject matter. He gets excited about it which says a lot, considering how dry, simple and trivial Critical Thinking can be.
This guy is the best!! He makes Phil fun.
He is a cool guy and the class is easy to go to (as in, not boring or always requiring a lot of work). Grades pretty generously and always looks for the best in your work. Definitely would recommend him for Phil 5.
Great teacher. Loves philosophy, reading and of course fudge. Read the text and you will do well on his quizes. The writing assignments are somewhat challenging. Very passionate about Phil. Balee dat.
HE BREAKS THE MATERIAL DOWN TO A LEVEL THAT MAKES THE CLASS VERY INTERESTING & FUN. HE OFFERS SIMPLISTIC YET VERY ACCURATE EXAMPLES - FUDGE AND HIS KIDS. THIS CLASS WAS THE BEST THAT I EVER TOOK AT THE JC. TAKE HIM AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT - I GUARATEE IT.
Liked him as a teacher alot, talks about his baby girl a bunch, which isnt bad, but if you cant stand that sorta thing then just pick someone else :P
very personable guy. really nice and obviously very knowledgable about philosophy. always explains things clearly, leaves no students behind. quizzes are based on the text, so remember to read. one of the best classes and teachers i've had.
the class was pretty easy for half of the class (including me), and super confusing for the other half..i guess you either get it or you dont. sean was nice, but pretty annoying, constantly cracking lame jokes that only he thought were funny, but whatever...thats the price you pay for a pretty easy class, i guess
Mr. Martin is awesome. The class is tough but entertaining. He is a great guy and remembers his students. Ran into him years later at Disneyland and he remembered my name...classy. Best wishes...
Sean is the best Phil teacher around. He is highly engaging and makes this class fun. I looked forward to his class everyday. Also, like someone else noted, he lnows all his students by name - I thought that was very cool. TAKE HIM AND YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
Loved this guy! Do the readings and assignments and you'll pass the class. He will help struggling students by giving extra credit assignments. He is a great teacher!
He is an awesome teacher. he often cracks himself up. does well in explaining his point in other terms. his essays have a fairly loose structure: just make and support your claim. periodic quizzed (no pop quizzes) were on lecture and reading. its a lot more helpful, but not completely necessary to read book.

Took PoliPhil my first semester (2 years ago) with him and it's still one of the best classes I have ever taken. He's phenominal! And his enthusiasm really shows! His taste in music isn't bad either.
really enthusiastic always willing to help you.
Mr. Martin is an awsome teacher, he will stay after class or make an appointment with any student that needs help, he is clear and to the point, his test are planned and go along with the material discussed in class.
Sean is really great. The class isn't really hard but the topics might be difficult to grasp to begin with. He is really great to talk to during his office hours and will be extremely helpful. He may seem intimidating to talk to in front of the class but catch him outside of class and it makes things much more comfortable. Oh and he is a hottie.
Sean is so great. I didn't understand what he was talking about in Phil 6, but he is very funny and intertaining. I wish I could take him for every class, and I wish he wasn't married. I am in love with him.
Spectacular fellow, I con't reccomend him enough. He is some kind of cross between Peter Sellers and the origanal nutty professor. His is the ONLY class this semester I have bothered to show up to regularly. The man actually listens to valid points, and makes students with stupid ones feel stupid! Finally!
Sean is a super teacher but beware! He is super smart and is a tough grader! this class broke my great gpa but i did learn alot! at least i had fun in class
Sean takes ancient philosophical concepts and flawlessly draws them into contemporary debates. He will likely question you on your papers, but it's only because he wants to help you in addressing these vastly complex issues from multiple perspectives.
Religious people should take this class, even if you don't need it. He is very respectful but makes excellent points. It's time someone opened your eyes . He helps is students to paint a bigger picture for themselves.
Hey Sean, you were a great teacher. I only took Phil 6 because it was required, but I am so glad that I did - I had no idea how Philosophy could help me find myself in a real way, helping me to rationalize my beliefs and better argue them with others. Thanks.

Very engaging, non-judgemental, thought-provoking, knowledgeable, and fair. Assignments are well-developed and clear. Important: take good notes and you will do well on the tests.
its a great class and the teacher is helpful and hot
Very funny guy! This class was my hardest but also my most favorite. He is helpful and not too tough on grading. He really doesn't ask a lot of you.
A very demanding class, but Sean is very helpful and humourous. This class will expand your horizon big time, so definitely take him.
Teacher is very funny. Sometimes making jokes so stupid you cant help but laugh. Nice guy. Class gets off subject alot making it hard sometimes to pay attention. Very fair grader. Would recommend taking the class
Great guy, funny, brilliant, always willing to help.
He's a funny guy, but is easily distracted into discussions about politics. Ask questions to keep the discussion on topic, because he will not move quiz dates or due dates for papers because the class was off topic. Text is easy to read, and quizzes are easy if you read the chapter.
Sean is one of the best teachers at the J.C. If you are interested in philosophy take this class. The class is not easy, but he is passionate, knowledgeable and a good lecturer. Also very funny, entertaining and just a nice guy.
Sean is very intelligent, kind, and funny. I got As on all the quizzes and exams, but I know many people did not. Tests are fair and represent the material. One paper at the end. Lectures can be interesting, especially when class starts debating something.
Great guy, willing to spend time after class to clarify something. He has a silly and infectious laugh but don't sit in the front row because he spits when he talks.
He is very helpful when he wants to be. A very smart man who knows what he is talking about but if you want to not do anything for a class period bring up a current event and watch him go off on a tangent for it. Ask for help if you dont understand otherwise dont bother taking the class.
He's a good teacher, he gets off subject sometimes-but it's nice to talk about something different now and then. You must do the reading and exercises he gives, and also go in and ask him for help if you need it. He likes to tell jokes, make people laugh, and just overall fun loving guy!
He's a great teacher. He's funny and completely unpretentious. Definitely recommend.
Loved this class. Pay attention though, or you may get lost. Agree that he can get off topic, but it's usually fun. Am trying to talk my son into taking his class next semester. Read your book and ask questions. He is happy to talk, talk, talk. Very smart, inquisitive guy.
Sean is the nicest professor i've had. He is very helpful and makes the subject fun and easy. He engages everyone, and is just an overall cool guy. Plus, he knows his stuff and is extremely intelligent. Reading a must for an A
Very concise, intelligent, funny & an all around great professor! Show up to class, do the hw, & it's inevitable that you'll learn a lot. This isn't the easiest class in the world but it's well worth your time & energy. He's very open minded & creates a non-judgemental atmosphere. I highly recommend him to anyone looking to educate themselves!
hands down my favorite teacher since seventh grade! he was so much fun i wish i could take his class over and over again. i got an A by just paying attention to his lectures, and doing what little work there was to be done. i dreaded taking this class so bad, but he really made it an enjoyable experience! i highly recommend him to anyone...
Just do the HW and you will do fine. One paper towards the end so do it early because it becomes too much towards the end.
I think his class was very interesting. He really enjoys teaching, and I actually liked it when he got off topic because the issues he discussed were interesting. He is also quite flexible when grading.
I would definitely NOT recommend this class. Yes, he is nice and will help you if you need it, but he is pretty out of his mind. My entire class with the exception of very few was constantly in a daze of confusion. I can see how people would like him and his silly sense of humor but i would reallly not take this class if you want to learn phil.
Great Teacher. Had him for Phil3. If you dont have a sense of humor and a drive to get work done you will not enjoy this class. He is a great guy and the class is always interesting. Never wanted to miss one! Highly Recommend! HIGHLY! tests are easy if you just read the material. work load is very do-able.
Good teacher. Interesting, funny, and passionate about what he teaches. Makes the class fun and bearable - hard class as it is. Would recommend.
He always keeps things interesting and fun!
amazing! first phil class i took, easy a, but i learned so much! by far my favorite teacher at the jc in 3 years.take sean if you can!!! loves his subject and class was uuber easy...
im taking phil of peace and nonviolent action. it's the first time he's taught this course so things are a little frazzled. he is adorable, above all... and genuinely interested in the subject and his students. sean is great and helpful.
one of my favorite classes! as long as you do the reading and study a little for the quizzes and tests, you'll be good to go. not boring at all, very funny and interesting teacher! =)
Nice guy. Was sick quite a bit towards the end of the semester and adjusted the final b/c of it. Material is hard if your first phil class, but he goes over it in ways you can understand. Easy to get ahold of and ask questions. only one essay at the end.
Dude this guy is awesome. I payed attention to all his lectures and he is such a nice guy and easy to talk to and he really takes you're input. Answers all your questions and his qizzes are very very VERY easy if you just read the material. If you did then you're set for an A+!!!
Great teacher! Very helpful and nice guy. It is hard to day dream or space out in his class because he is so enthusiastic and entertaining. I highly recommend him. He is also extremely bright and it shows.
mr martin is a sweet teacher. i dont like philosophy but i still enjoyed his class. he is pretty funny, high energy, and he loves his subject. he is real helpful and you can tell he loves to teach the class. i wish he taught other subjects cuz i would want him as a techer again.
The class is a bit hard especially if you aren't great with logic. I learned a lot of useful skills from this class. He is so bizarre and funny that even if you don't like the subject, it's worth it just to come to class. Remember if you smoke cigarettes, you'll start smoking the pot and then you'll be a crack addict prostitute.
This is a great professor. Sometimes he gets off track with what he is saying, but he is interesting to listen to. His tests are very fair. Make sure you keep up with the reading for weekly quizzes. He doesn't attack other's opinions, but presents a philosophical view. Very friendly and happy to help at any time.
I took his Philosophy 10 class and I learned soo much! He's soo ENTERTAINING and funny. He's a smart dude.
Sean is a really nice and easygoing guy. Though this is a difficult subject for most he makes the class comfortable and is very understanding. I came into this class expecting the worst and left the class with the appreciation and knowledge of critical thinking and logic.
Nice guy, not that great a teacher. Classes are slow and monotonous, all lecture. I didn't really learn anything during class, he goes off on tangents a lot and is hard to pay attention to. To pass the class, read the textbook (which is written in an equally boring way) and memorize definitions, names, and who said what for the quizzes and tests.
good teacher. interesting and funny to listen to. quizzes generally easy, but they are extremely useful for studying for the tests, which, if you have the quizzes probably can't get worse than a B since most of the questions come from the quizzes. tests btw are very easy if you read though either way. May have to put effort into writing the essays
I highly reccommend this class. He has an entertaining teaching style,is somewhat easy, and you can learn a lot if you try and engage in the discussions. He will always try to represent the counterarguments to the arguments you make in class, so you can really understand all sides of the philosophical issues, so long as you try to challenge them.
Sean is a really fun and a very entertaining lecturer. I dont think that I would have survived this class without him as a teacher. Philosophy is not something that im interested in and Sean made it a very pleasent experience
Interesting subject, teacher meander through whatever material he believes is relevant. Doesnt control in class discussions. Assigns homework and forgets to tell people in class. Grades arbitrarily. Uses text book pop quizzes to see if reading is completed.
Great teacher, wish we had more time to go through readings more throughly. Great teacher though, very understanding, and worth taking him again
Answers to questions are often long-winded and a little pedantic, then followed by self-deprecating apologies. I frequently had to fight to pay attention. That said, this class changed my life. Do the reading and engage in discussion. This class has tremendous potential and I realized that, like life, it can be however you decide to make it.
Interesting guy. I looked forward to the class. Quizzes on every chapter and about 4 tests including the final. You have to go to class to pass. Very generous with offering to help/extra credit if people are really struggling.
He's nice but really boring. He always argues sides and acts like he's never wrong. Class is ALL lecture, and very confusing. He rambles to the point where you don't know wtf he's talking about. Homework doesn't get turned in, but do it because otherwise the class won't make any sense at all. I don't learn ANYTHING in class. However, he does try.
So confused by other comments by how he is fun because class is ALL LECTURE. He is extremely long winded and many times goes off topic. He relates everything to politics and confuses the class. I'm sorry was this supposed to be a philosophy class or political science? And funny? I missed that. He laughs at his own jokes while the class just stares.
Really? You guys are complaining that his class is all lecture? It's a Philosophy class... Were you expecting to bake a pie? Sean is a-dork-able. <3 him.
Sean is awesome he is a super intellegent guy. I took his Phil 3 class woul difanlty recommend it if you want to learn in a class. Very little hw just occasional quizzes and final paper is very clear about what he so just follow his prompt and you'll do fine!
Sean is very funny and enjoys laughing at himself. Class is laid back and entertaining. The questions on the quizzes and test are on practice quizzes online, so they are very easy to do well on. Loved his class overall.
I really enjoyed this class! Usefully information and actually a class that will benefit you throughout life. Sean was a total goofball but made the class fun and enjoyable. He doesn't collect homework but expect you to do it...It is college people! As long as you do the reading and homework you will ace this class, Easy peasy
Sean Martin was a very pleasant instructor. He knows a lot about his subject and is very approachable. He can be scattered at times but it doesn't affect his lessons.
Martin's lectures are about politics and such making it confusing if you don't understand politics. He assigns homework but doesn't give credit for it. So whats the point of doing it then? You have to be good at tests and quizzes to pass the class.
He doesn't really teach you much he just expects you to read the book. He assigns homework and doesn't collect it and or give you credit for it. He is never there for office hours and says if you need help get a tutor.
This class was all over the place, I ended up dropping it after a month. Points weren't very clear, and he would go off on tangents. Assignments didn't help learn the material just helped you feel more confused. The quiz and test I took in this class, were multiple pages long and were written, multiple choice and matching. Don't take this class!
Although Sean's lectures are all over the place they are never boring. It is better when you engage and don't be afraid to step up. If you are bold enough to argue your point, he will hear you. I ended up using the text and memorizing terms in order to get good grades on the tests. The concepts are vague but Sean does a good job.
Awesome teacher! Highly recommend.
Martin is energetic and quite interesting. He can go off on rants, but they're always super funny and might even tie into the lessons. If you read the necessary chapters and pay attention, this class could actually change the way you'll live your life, too. It's quite literally a logic class, so expect to be a smarter person after it's all done.
Sean is an overall good teacher. He gives quizzes on each chapter and then a test. Make sure to do the on-line practice quizzes and you're sure to pass. He assigns homework and then takes plenty of time to go over it and make sure his students understand it. As long as you show up and do the work you should have no problem passing this class
Prof is a really cool human, I just feel that the way he teaches is not very helpful. Your grade is based off of the tests, there are about 2 tests each 3 weeks. After each test he would hand back, he would comment on how low the overall score was, I think he needs to reevaluate his teaching method. Went to the office hour, sadly found no help:(
Basically, an A is feasible if you do the following 1) attend majority of classes 2) participate minimally (eye contact, give insight) 3) read and prep for reading quizzes 4) study thoroughly for the "quizzes" (they are exams, he calls them quizzes) 5) don't leave the midterm or term paper to the day before like I do... 6) Ace the Final, (mc, easy)
He is nice and funny. His clarity needs work. When you ask him a specific question,he can easily go off topic, and beat around the bush which leaves you still confused and unsure. The tests are easy if you do the reading and make sure you understand the topics on your own and look at the power points on your own because he doesn't really go over it
Sean Martin is an amazing philosophy instructor, absolutely hilarious at times. If you take his classes it would be wise to put yourself in a mindset to participate in class discussion, as it is a decent part of the grade. There are times when he will talk about something that will tangent into other things, but for the most part he is pretty clear
Sean is such a nice person. He is extremely respectful and very clear about what he expects from you in class. He will spend a lot of his time giving feedback in order to help you learn if you seek help. If you work hard to understand the material, do the work, and participate in class, you can get an A.
Sean Martin is a really intelligent, hilarious, and passionate person that being said do not take any of his classes if you're not really a philosophy person because you will be lost his class is not at all easy he assigns massive readings over the week and gives 2 question quizzes every now and then if you do not pay attention you will fail
Sean was an awesome instructor. I always found his lectures very engaging and interesting, even though he has a tendency of going off on a tangent frequently. There is very little work, however, this results in there being very little room for "bad" grades in his assignments. Just show up, take his quizzes, and do "OK" on essays for an easy 'A'
This teacher I thought would be very helpful and unfortunately I was wrong. He doesn't make sense when he is lecturing which is all the class is. There is no homework due and class is based off of test scores only. He is good about makeup tests if you are gone but other than that if you have an opinion and his is different... yours is wrong.
Very disappointed in this class. He barely lectures on the material in an understandable way because he goes off on tangents constantly. If you really want to learn the material and interpret it in your own way take another professor. Its not even worth showing up to class. But! Great guy, very nice and understanding I will give him that.
Sean is really a great guy who is passionate about philosophy. But, classes are often all over the place (which is also due to the students) and your overall grade is based on only a few quizzes and exams. The only homework is reading, and one essay due at the end of the semester. Not an easy A
Sean is incredibly passionate about philosophy. He loves what he teaches. His lectures are very hard to follow because of all the tangents he goes on. Concepts made sense until he paired them with his unusual and complex examples, which actually made things even more unclear. Lots of reading and grade based almost all on quizzes and exams.
Sean is a fabulous teacher who graceful navigates teaching a complex intellectual study of knowledge like philosophy, and makes it accessible and relevant. He loves class participation and is really compassionate in his answers, in the event your not understanding. Hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had, and I am VERY picky.
Sean is an okay teacher, he tends to go off on random tangents and uses very complex words that are not needed. Your grade is based on quizzes, exams and a final paper. Assigns homework but doesn't collect it. Would not recommend if you have trouble learning material on your own.
Sean is an inspiration teacher. He's by far one of the best teachers I've had in a while. Though he goes off on random rants and thoughts, he lectures good but can sometimes become monotone. He always seems to be in his own world (he laughs at his own jokes & looks semi-crazy while doing it) & on the final day, he handed us the wrong final.
Martin at first seemed as a nice, easy to talk to person. which he is don't get me wrong, but he goes off topic too much. Goes way of topic that he doesn't even go over class material. Wouldn't take him again.
He's a funny guy, however, he does go on tangents a lot. Don't pay the $98 for text, rent the full version on Amazon for $25, same content. There is no homework aside from assigned reading. He doesn't have clear slides so prepare to read to do well on ch. quizzes. There's a final paper and a cumulative multiple choice test for the final. READ!
Sean is an advanced philosopher teaching an introductory philosophy course. That means lectures are overly complicated and insufferable. Your grade is determined solely by the tests and quizzes, so read the text book. However, class lectures are more confusing than reassuring, as he goes on unending tangents that leave you discouraged. Nice guy tho
Sean is a very nice teacher but he rambles a lot and is very confusing to listen to. Don't buy the book- it is a total waste of money. You need to do the reading in the library but there are no assignments out of the book. He taught our class the wrong lecture one day for 45 minutes. Your entire grade is based off of test and quizzes, + 1 essay.
I feel like Philosophy is a hard topic to learn, but I felt Sean did a pretty good job at it. He is very funny and has his oddities, but the class is very lecture heavy + discussion based. Your grade is tests scores (5+final) but drops the lowest one. He also offers extra credit. One negative is he never showed grades throughout the semester.
He has pretty good lectures. He uses a very specific textbook that only the srjc library has made for his class. Other than that he is light on homework and tests.
Sean is a nice guy however, he rambles and can be difficult to understand at times. One class he taught a lesson for a different class for forty-five minutes until he finally noticed. The book is pretty expensive and potentially difficylt to sell back so I would recommend renting.
I took Sean for Phil 6 and 10. He is a great teacher who cares about his students. He does not assign much homework, but to get a good grade, all you have to do is attend class and do the readings. If you find yourself struggling in his class, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOUR. He is a very reasonable guy and will do everything he can to set you up for success
Had to do most of the learning and reading on my own. The content in the book was necessary to complete the class yet was really broad. Long lectures but attend every one in order to stay caught up! Just showing up won't be enough, so be sure to pay attention to upcoming quizzes and the readings that are discussed broadly in class.
Sean is one of the best professors on the SRJC campus. He engages the class with his humor, empathy, and quirky personality. His classes are always informative and interesting. His lectures cover broad topics that sometimes indirectly apply to the subject. To really appreciate the class, do the assigned reading and attend his lectures.
Very Humorous. Great lectures. Always learning something new in this class.
By far one of my favorite teacher. He is so admirable with excellent knowledge in philosophy. He is so articulate and easy going. He can ramble on but he knows it. Funny & always understanding! 10/10 would recommend
Definitely tends to digress into tangents but they are still on topic. Very intelligent and well spoken as well as incredibly friendly. Very animated so be prepared for spontaneous/dramatic stage acting. He never collects homework so your grade is participation and tests. He genuinely cares and wants you to understand though so questions welcomed.
Professor Martin was a breath of fresh air, he made my first semester of COVID actually tolerable and I looked forward to his class each week. The class itself is definitely lecture heavy and the quizes had some tricky questions sometimes but overall it was relatively easy. Highly recommend Critical Thinking with Prof Martin!
Great Professor; Critical Thinking. He changed my life. Taught me to look at language and the world around me in a whoel new light. Renaissance man!
I loved taking Seans classes. Hes an awesome professor!
Martin has a great personality and makes lectures really fun and engaging. It'd take one of his classes if you like participating in discussions. Definitely going to take another class of his at some point.
Sean is understanding and passionate about what he teaches, however, I felt as though his lectures can be scattered with pointless class discussion. I think that if you want to become more familiar with philosophical concepts Sarah lesson is great. she substituted for us one day and I learned more from her than from sean.
Helpful in office hours!
Awful professor, His lectures were all over the place and I learned absolutely NOTHING. He makes Phil so hard to understand. Quizzes and participation are a big portion of your grade, and he gives out a lot of quizzes. My stem classes were easier than this class. Choose another professor to take it with if you can. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Sean's lectures can be scattered, but he's passionate about the subject. Attending class is a must, but be prepared to do most of the learning on your own by reading the textbook. Using Unstuck ai alongside the readings can really help with study prep.
I really didn't want to take it here, but I am. I found this teacher annoying. I feel like he's trying to use micro aggressions. Sorry. You don't scare me as much as you'd like to think. Please don't make comments about how some people deserve an education and some people don't. You're an educator. Enough.
Professor Martin is an incredible philosopher and teacher. He is great at helping his students to think deeply. I gained so much from this class. Like in all classes, you need to do the reading, he doesn't give busy work but that means tests and papers matter. I highly recommend this his office hours, he's super helpful and kind.
Lectures seemed very long during class, and would sometimes get off topic. All lectures would go over the homework in detail, but homework was never checked. Quizzes were the only graded portion as well as your attendance and participation in discussions. Doesn't use canvas for grading, so you don't know your grade,Quizzes can be hard to understand
