Was a really great professor, really interesting and passionate. Made the class and subject matter really interesting.
One of the best profs that I've come across. He's very passionate about what he teaches, and is open to class discussions. DO NOT miss his lectures, and take notes in class.. he relies heavily on sources other than the textbook. Exams are fair, keep up with your readings and attendance and you will do fine! HIGHLY recommended!
Really enjoyable to attend his lectures. I was in a 3 hour class with him so it was great that he was so passionate about his lectures. Must attend classes as most of test material is on lecture notes. Tests are a breeze if you have attended class with minimal studying needed.
Very helpful and passionate!! He loves what he teaches and always encourages discussion. Definitely attend lectures and take notes!
This is the first time I have ever written a post on this site despite being on it for many years. I have been to UBC and Langara, and this man is my favorite prof of all time. He loves to teach, teaches well, and marks fair. You must come to class or you will do poorly. Easy class if you try somewhat.
Great prof. He knows his stuff. His tests are really easy, just make sure you attend class.
Sean knows how to keep a class captivated! His knowledge of history exceeds far more than the class criteria. Interesting man to go talk to during office hours about whatever general history questions you may have. Exams are incredibly easy if you understand your cause/effect. Research papers are marked fairly, and with no unexplained criteria.
Great guy overall! You can tell he's really passionate about history. As long as you come to class, pay attention and take notes, you'll do fine. He's very friendly and approachable, and really tries to help you. He does go a bit fast through his lectures but you really are more than welcome to ask him to repeat what he said.
Sean Maschmann is amazing, challenging and is extremely devoted to his work. His passion is contagious. That's all. Take his class.
Great professor! Amazing classes! Lots of energy and passion. Make sure you go to each class and take notes. He covers a lot of material so he does tend to go fast but feel free to get him to repeat anything and he'll break it down for you. Very knowledgeable. Best prof I've had a post secondary.
Sean is what everything an instructor should be - engaging, passionate, extremely knowledgeable and very clear in the way he facilitates the class and material. His lectures is where it's at so make sure you attend all classes, take as much notes and go over them - guaranteed you will do well. Easy class if you do all of that.
Fair tests, his lectures are very easy to follow and he's extremely passionate about what he lectures about. Yells frequently to get your attention and for emphasis. He definitely makes lectures interesting! Take thorough notes and you will do fine.
Sean is one of the greatest profs in Langara that truly makes an impact on a student's academic life. Never miss a class, pay focused attention during lectures, and do every assignment given. It's not hard to get an A, but it sure does take effort to do so. Never a boring class with Sean!
The best instructor I've met on Langara. He is ['extremely' prefix goes to every word henceforth]passionate, helpful, knowledgeable, fun, and he also does lots of studying on his own time which is shown in his lectures. He will make you enjoy the class regardless of your interest level on the subject. You must take his course.
Sean is an excellent teacher! As others have mentioned, he is passionate about the material he teaches and has a wealth of knowledge. He is approachable, down to earth and willing to help his students. I intend on taking more courses taught by him!
Attend all classes, take down the key terms he writes down on the board, put in the effort and never hesitate to ask him for help. One of the best profs in Langara!
Great teacher. Obviously passionate about his subject, clear lectures, funny, engaging. Watch out for volume changes as he talks, as he starts to yell if he's really passionate about something. Also tends to talk a bit fast. Still, great, great teacher.
Sean was a great prof! He definitely made history enjoyable. However he speaks really fast and gives a lot of information. Which is a blessing and a curse; You finally understand why something happened but your hand cramps and you can't write it down. Be prepared though because his exams are hard. Sean is great if you hate OR love history.
he knitpicks stuff on the exam that you wouldn't think would be on the exam because he spends so little time talking about it. His expections on essays are unclear and unrealistic. I attended every class, wrote down everything he said and studied the most out of all my courses. I'm a B average student. Never taking history again.
Sean is great. He is passionate about what he teaches and is very willing to help his students. Lectures are entertaining, and the class will fly on by. Attendance is mandatory as all exams are based on his lectures so take thorough notes. Highly recommended and a genuinely nice human being.
Best history prof... ever! You can clearly see that he works hard for his lectures, and he's always there to help you in his office hours. Just take his class and put in some effort, and an A is easy to achieve!
Fantastic teacher and very entertaining. His 3-hour lectures felt like half an hour. I would recommend him to anyone, interested in history or not.
Very enthusiastic teacher about history! Never thought I'd be able to sit through a three hour lecture without losing interest. Very helpful that he gives you a guideline before exams. Does use some very sophisticated language in his lecture though, so be sure to look up some of the terms he says in class so you'd understand what hes saying. Great!
Sean really gets into it. I sat in the front row and experienced him nearly yelling for 3 hours, which is a remarkable experience. That being said, he's a great prof. He (obviously) is passionate for what he's teaching, and that comes through in the lecture. However I would NOT recommend 3 hour lectures in any circumstance. Sean made it though.
I really enjoyed Sean's class, his knowledge and enthusiasm really gave me an appreciation for the subject.
I've taken four classes with Sean in my time at Langara, and I can honestly say that I don't think I've ever had a better experience. He's passionate, engaging, and thorough. If you should up for class, you'll be fine for the exams. His grading is fair, and he is helpful; if you go to him for questions or advice, he'll go above and beyond to help.
Sean is wonderful. Extremely helpful and a fountain of knowledge. Get ready to write, as he packs a lot of info into his lectures, but it's extremely beneficial. He goes above and beyond for his students compared to most teachers. His enthusiasm for the course material is contagious.
(I'm an UBC alumna). Sean is very engaging, inspiring, and helpful! Highly recommend this class for people who are interested in world history! Very clear and effective lectures. Bring a laptop to type notes efficiently or lots of paper for note taking. Beware of seminar presentations if you are also an introvert.
Sean is an amazing prof who makes sure to add humor into his lectures. His lectures are very detailed and interesting. He is very dedicated to his work and is very clear with what he expects in the course. He won't give you any trick questions on tests as they are very straight forward, if you take detailed notes you can expect an A in his class.
Sean is great! His lectures can be somewhat long but he is so funny and he provides such clear outlines for projects and exams. He is the type of teachers that wants to see his students succeed. He will even give feedback on big assignments if you show him before the due date. He is one of my favourite teachers by far. Definitely recommended.
Make sure you take really good lecture notes and come to class ! Read notes and get your facts memorized for exams (essay part) to support your essay topic. Basically just read and understand your notes. You' ll be fine.
Sean is the most understanding teacher. He is really passionate about the subject. If you attend his classes you will be totally fine. The exams are really fair.
Sean is a star. He makes his lectures entertaining and is a lot of fun. He also really cares about his students, giving great advice and encouragement. As long as you take good lecture notes and review them, the class is an easy pass.
All verbal lectures, so be ready to take notes. However you can tell he is extremely passionate with teaching history. Throws in witty jokes which, once you get them they are pretty funny. Pretty down to earth guy as well, he treats us like we are humans and genuinely cares for his students well being.
You do not really need the textbook unless you want to read more on past events and Sean himself notes that you just need to pay attention and take the lecture notes in order to do well on the exams. He does a really good job with outlining past events through his detailed lectures and he will answer any question in case one might need more info.
Sean was the best. He was my first Langara instructor and helped me relax when I transitioned to college. He's hilarious, so passionate and loves to help students out. He'll help you come up with strong essay topics and gives you extensions when necessary. He makes history a lot of fun. It's not just a typical lecture.
A German teaching history? Lol. Haven't we endured enough?! What's next? Ethiopians teaching us about food? Please, the irony.
Probably the best prof I had at Langara. Funny, engaging lectures, super easy marker, he'll tell you exactly what he wants on each assignment and test. 10/10 would take for every class if I could.
He made it really clear not to buy the textbook and that he doesn't do power points up front. I love that he assigned an outline so I wasn't stressed about my paper later. Before the paper was due he said something like "writing a good paper doesn't make you a good person" - he's super non-judgemental and helpful and has great taste in turtlenecks.
Pros: enthusiastic prof to tackle content heavy course, emphasises important main ideas, very responsive with emails, generous with extensions and reviewing drafts, straightforward midterm and final. Cons: all verbal lectures, talks fast so use laptop and cut out unecessary notes. Other: 10% attendance, 45% research essay, 20% midterm, 25% final.
Be prepared to WRITE A LOT. He rarely stops talking just to catch some air. He assumes though that you write down every word. He has a solid knowledge of history and at the same time his lectures are fantastic. One of the best lectures i've had at Langara.
Ive taken 4 of Seans courses at Lanagara and he was easily one of my favourite profs there. His grading is very fair with him giving you opportunities to have drafts graded beforehand and all of his test questions are based on the lectures. Buying the textbook is good but you really dont need it as his engaging lectures cover everything.
The most loving professor at Langara. Offers a lot of assistance to students who look for it. Course is graded on few things, but he marks relatively easy. All material is based off of lecture, no textbook and no slides, verbal. Doesn't expect you to know specific dates, just understand key ideas and you will do well. Great professor.
Sean is very knowledgable about what he teaches. Do the reading, take good notes, and you will be fine.
Sean is great and super passionate about history. His lectures are very engaging which is helpful as he doesn't use any visuals. He is super caring and works hard to ensure that his students succeed. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
As one commenter said best. Sean is a STAR. He is a professor who genuinely cares about both the subject at hand and his students. I have not had a professor like him since and miss how much I enjoyed his lectures. It was a real privilege taking courses with him and I wish him the absolute best.
Sean is an amazing prof. he is very caring and helpful.
Phenomenal teacher. One of the best at Langara. Highly recommend. He's super energetic and cares about his lectures. Doesn't make you waste money on the textbook and can easily do well if you show up to lectures. Class will be a struggle if you skip. Makes you write an outline and bibliography, an essay and midterm/final is well formatted.
Sean is a very good teacher. He cares deeply about his lectures and is helpful outside of class.
-Seans a legend. He present his lectures verbally so attendance is important. Super interesting and hilarious lectures. -Hes willing to help you in essays outside class which is rare for profs to do that. -Group discussions is to understand the things you dont know, which is very helpful and counts your marks Definitely recommended
Sean taught the first uni class I ever took. His teaching style immediately calmed my anxieties about it. It's clear he genuinely cares about the success and well being of his students and understands we have lives outside the classroom. Amazing lecturer as well, and extremely available to answer any questions you may have, no matter how dumb.
Sean is passionate about the subject matter and also about being a teacher. He is completely rooting for his students - offers support on first drafts, responds to emails quickly, super liberal with extensions. Places historical moments in context so you know before and after for the average person. Little bits of humour in lectures don't hurt.
Great teacher. Bring a laptop to take notes.
Most humble and helpful person ever in Langara! Be ready to take all the notes by yourself because he does not provide slides and you have to attend every class to take notes in order to study.
Seans Fall 2020 Online class was lecture heavy. Theres a mandatory two lectures per week. On average each lecture goes over an hour. There is only One paper this semester alongside the final. Participation is graded based on discussion topics throughout the course. There are 5 quizzes throughout the course as well.
I absolutely have no idea where these good reviews come from. In my experience, Sean was single-handedly one of the worst instructors I have ever had in my life and not only in college. Throughout the entire semester, he did not responded to my emails even once and whenever I wanted to go to his office hours, they got cancelled. Do not recommend.
There are no PowerPoint slides or any handouts. Attend class, pay attention, take notes on everything he says and writes down. Exams were reasonable and fair (short answer + long answer essay). He also offers to give feedback on your research paper prior to the deadline if you choose to do so. Great professor!
Fair grader and very friendly instructor. As long as students pay attention in class will get a high mark
He is very passionate about history and it shows in his lectures! They're very interesting to listen to and even funny sometimes. He's a great storyteller and an easy marker. He's always available for help, and will even grade your paper before its due so you can make changes and hand it in on the due date. Great instructor!
literally the best teacher at Langara Ive had. Very clear about every thing and constantly updates you. Very generous sumission time for work. His outline for essay was so detailed that I will now use it for english classes. Take this man, top notch prof. If everyone was like him, i gurantee a lot more people would enroll here. ty Sean .
He's really nice teacher, he dont post any power points or other material, he only post his voice recording which we have to listen and make notes. He gives only important notes which are really helpful. Just listen carefully and make notes and there are no midterms , only few quizes and exam. You will get an easy A.
Sean is one of the best profs I have had at Langara. His lectures are detailed & informative, but he presents them in a way that holds your attention. One paper, two exams, a few (small group) class discussions. He is awesome at encouraging students, he's always available, & his feedback is great. pay attention to lectures and you wont need txtbook
Sean's knowledge and passion made History 1115 incredibly enjoyable to attend. No slides or detailed notes on the board, but always clarified anything that I didn't understand or was missing notes on when I asked. Gives detailed feedback on drafts and papers, and was flexible about deadlines, too. Would take a class with him again if I could!
Passionate and knowledgeable. Need to take notes to keep up with dense lectures. I got an extension on my draft proposal and then again on my term paper, and he was super helpful and understanding. Learned so much, and appreciated the inclusion of art and labour, rather than only focusing on war and royalty. My fave instructor. No textbook.
Best lecturer at Langara, Can make the most mundane topic interesting.
Best Professor at Langara. He manages to lecture passionately in a way that keeps your full attention 100% of the time. Super knowledgeable, caring and understanding guy! Helped me in keeping my post-secondary motivation.
My favourite teacher at Langara. Think you'd fall asleep in an early morning lecture, not with Sean. Captivating and detailed lectures that keep you on the edge of your seat. His loud booming voice adds great effect as well. Super easy going, as a Science major with lots of other homework and tests, Sean kindly gave me extensions on assignments.
Although the lectures don't have visuals, the lectures aren't super long and he is always passionate about what he teaches. he is always ready to help you when needed. Sean is a great professor for those who love history!
Sean is the best professor I've had. His lectures are very engaging and he's always open to questions and criticism. His grading criteria is clear and he gives few projects. I have done two of his classes and they've been amazing. Keep in mind he does not use PowerPoint or provide any lecture notes.
He can be talking about something in the year 1911, but then he goes back to the year 1889, and then to 1902 (yes, in that order). Not a single visual aid to make the class easygoing, but his handwriting on the board, all scrambled, like a collage of words. You MUST remember every single detail for exams. Essay missed? Will fail automatically
Sean is hands down the best lecturer at Langara. He truly cares about his students education and will give you his all to ensure your success in his class. Sean should be the Standard for every professor as he is a truly great educator. I have taken his classes the last two semesters and he has improved my writing and education greatly.
Cons: lecture heavy and at times a bit hard to follow. Pros: phenomenal instructor willing to go above and beyond for students. Accommodating and accessible. It is clear he cares deeply about history and seems to genuinely enjoy sharing that care of history with others. A very fair and inspirational instructor
Easily the best prof at Langara. You have to come to class and take notes, he doesn't post them online. However, the way he teaches you don't even need to study. He makes history easy to understand. He also does exam review in class, and the exam questions are straight from his review questions.
The thing that stands out to me with Sean is his willingness to go above and beyond for his students. Sean's comments on papers and assignments are extensive, and even more so when reached out to. The amount of effort to further the education of students, and accessibility in-person and online makes him a worthwhile professor to take a class with.
Took Sean for HIST 1115 and 1124. He has no lecture notes and require you to take notes in class, which isn't a big deal. Sean is the greatest prof I had at my 2 years at Langara. You can bring your essay to him a week in advance for him to check it out. If you cannot succeed in his courses, you should probably not become a history major.
Sean is very passionate about history. His lectures contain a lot of information. He speaks clearly, but may raise his voice to emphasize. He does not use PowerPoint, and you are required to take notes. Group discussions are also encouraged. Do not skip class because he takes attendance on every group discussion, and doesn't upload audio lectures.
Really good professor. He does full lectures every week, both days. Really passionate about his subject matter. Be warned, he shouts the entire lecture and gets louder when he is emphasising a point. It's fine most of the time but in the smaller lecture hall it can be a bit overwhelming. It is however very impressive.
I failed 1124 with a different prof, and got an A with Sean. I've taken two of his classes so far. If you show up and take notes, you'll do fine. Doesn't use the textbook, so show up to class. You get graded on an essay, class discussions (which is an automatic A if you show up) and midterms. Would take his class again 100%. Best prof at Langara.
I didn't have to study for this class. He lectures in a way that is easy to remember and understandable. If you show up and write notes and review you will do fine. Super passionate about the topics too.
Very approachable and welcoming of questions, concerns, and accommodations within reason. Engaging lectures, straightforward grading criteria, fantastic prof.
As someone who struggled with history, Sean is a fantastic professor who is clearly passionate about the subjects taught in class. The way his lectures are delivered helps you understand the material thoroughly while you also take your own notes to study later. Do not skip his classes, as all the test material comes from the class lectures.
super engaging, sweet, and passionate professor. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, I highly recommend it. he teaches such a great class and is more than willing to help you with anything you need.
SEAN IS AMAZING! No Powerpoint but raw and passionate verbal lectures of historic events which are also super easy to understand. Sean's midterms are also very very easy and you have discussions notes which are basically the midterm questions. Sean is one of the best history profs in Langara, and will make you fall in love with history. W prof.
Sean is the most incredible history professor I've had. His ability to create such engaging lectures without a powerpoint or much media at all is so impressive. He is genuinely passionate about what he teaches and it really shows. You will definitely struggle if you skip classes but his classes are so relaxed that there's really no point.
I've taken two classes with Sean, great prof and would recommend if you are passionate about history!
TOP FIVER BROTHER, HE WAS A TOP FIVER BROTHER. Sean Maschmann has gotta be one of the most enjoyable professors I've ever had. He paints a great picture of American History and is an especially engaging lecturer. BEWARE OF THE ESSAY, IT IS IMPERETIVE TO THE FINAL GRADE THAT YOU LOCK IN WITH IT, SO GET 'ER DONE BUDDY-O.
Hilarious and great guy, truly one of the best profs I've had. He's extremely nice and reasonable.
Sean is a great professor cause he makes the material very easy to understand. He's incredibly kind and passionate about his students. Please note, there are hardly ever any notes or sides in his classes so attendance is very mandatory. Its very easy to get behind if you're not constantly on top of your work.
HIST 1114: Renaissance and Reformation (online). As long as you keep up with the material, you will do well on the quizzes. Tip: Focus on the 'what' of historical events and their consequences, and treaties that end wars. The course is delivery-heavy on audio, so be prepared to take notes without visual slides. Sean values essay-writing.
