Great teacher, good class, definitely a must take
The McDaddy is a real funny guy. If you just read the notes he emails to you, youll be in great shape. He's a good guy too. For real

He's one of my top four prof's on campus...he's just great. Definitely take ethics because he makes it really interesting and entertaining. He also has much sex appeal.
He was very funny, however could be very moody.
i hated this class, i used the notes that he send and still failed the class. very moody and the class was the most boring thing in the world. too bad he's my adviser.
Great Prof he really makes sure you understand and if you dont go to his office hours he will explain everything. All the questions to the test are pretty much given to you, the only thing is he is a stickler for grammar. Extremely funny and interesting
The best professor ever! He has dirty humor and makes class fun (considering the subject). Very sexy!!
WOW! Best prof ever! I did not want to take Ethics at all, and he definitely made it interesting! I recommend to all my friends to take him, sure I didn't get an A (i got a B) but he made me think of things I never have before...This is what college should be like.
I used to think he was a jerk and thought the class was nothing like what an expected philosophy course should be like. After getting some help from him I realized the course wasn't as bad and that the professor was actually very good. I appreciated his time. Also very funny in class.
**** Daddy McAleer, as he sometimes refers to himself, is simply that. His class is completely fair. Know the readings and the basics and class will make alot of sense. Tests are very abstract. I love McAleer!
This is one of the best prof's I have had. He makes references to pop culture (napoleon dynamite and snoop dogg, c'mon!) and will do anything for a laugh. The quizess are very easy if you take notes and read, just like any other class. I definately recommend him.
He may be funny, but his crude humor will only get him so far. He spends too much time cracking jokes, not enough teaching. He does not prepare students for exams at all and is ridiculously picky when grading. He also def. has favorites who speak out loud in class all the time. Many kids withdrew
Very moody, crude DO NOT TAKE! AVOID.
Very funny, and helpful. He makes class fun. He is a fair prof who likes it when you speak up in class. Make sure you know the reading.
Lecture is always fun, he's laid back and has some weird examples that are funny. The only thing that sucks is that he likes to be tricky on tests/quizzes. He's very picky for your essays on tests, and he will dock many points for even grammatical errors. But he does weigh your best test higher.
Dr. Sean loves teaching, and it shows. He is super funny and yes sometimes crude. He is a stickler for grammar so be warned, but as long as you do most of the readings and pay attention in class you will be fine, and if confused just ask him, he'll help.
The best professor ever. Explains things clearly and always keeps class interesting.
Awesome professor. Makes the lectures really fun. Go to review sessions because they help a lot. The material can be really confusing so make sure to listen in lecture and study a good amount for tests.
Great guy, very funny. I enjoyed going to class...but the tests were hard for me - mostly essay and such. Just make sure you read the material, keep up and go to lecture.
Extremely fun and funny.
He is a good guy. I dont know what those girls are talking about, he has no sex appeal at all. He is very funny but the tests are very hard and he definately is very picky.
Great prof. can't imagine another prof teaching phil of law and making it interesting!
He is a tough grader, but a good lecturer. B's in his classes are doable if you put the time in. Always willing to answer questions. Really funny, he finds a way to make somewhat dry material interesting.
Very hard grader but teaches the class well. Reading is a must.
Very helpful guy. He is very funny.
He uses humor thats why some like him. But his humor is crude and he is just a picky grader. The test are mostly essay. Do not take class, he is very moody.
Hard Grader, not helpful. Avoid if you can.
Not what I expected after reading comments. Was a tough grader and not very clear at times.
Picky... very picky. Not very clear.
If you can appreciate a cruder sense of humor you will enjoy this class (or any class of his for that matter). You can tell he enjoys what he is doing and wants to be there. I like to sit in the front row so I can see his dreamy eyes. Just kidding. He's fun and can make the material more interesting.
Great prof. Hilarious. Adorable. Had the greatest time my senior year in his class. It's tough, but if you really work, you get rewarded. Gotta give the man credit for making a class of seniors laugh at 8am.
Dr. Mac... what can I say. He makes class fun and he is VERY CLEAR about what he expects you to know. Given that, if you study the topics that he clearly addresses are important... than you will get a good grade. He doesn't try to trick you, he just expects you to know your stuff. I learned a lot from him and he was fun.
Highly recommend that you take this guy second semester Freshman year! You will be comfortable enough with college to handle his exams and yet will still be clueless enough about what a truly excellent professor is to believe he may be one. He is, at times entertaining, but over all full of crap and a little too stuck on himself.
Seriously don't take this class. I thought it sounded easy... boy was I wrong. He is a tough grader on both the tests and the assignments.
He is a pretty funny guy. All of his lectures were on power point, and he did not grade based on attendance. He can be a little bit tough when grading essays, but he gives a lot of easy multiple choice or true/false questions on exams. The class was boring, but he tried to make it fun.

I've had him for several classes so I knew what to expect. He makes the class very enjoyable, but he does expect people to do the work. You need to read the material or you will not understand what is going on. He is a tough, but fair grader. I love this guy. I hope he teaches different classes so I am always able to take his classes.
you think you know what he is talking about during class.. but he makes tests and assignments almost impossible to do good on...
Never really covers what will be on the tests, and when he does he explains it so you can't comprehens what he says.
Best teacher at Eau Claire. One of the few classes I look forward to attending. Makes concepts interesting...very funny guy, throws in movie quotes left and right.
Thought this class would include a lot of discussion. Rather we read other's opinions and talk about them. A lot of reading is required, and you are expected to understand it before he lectures on it. Tests are difficult, grades essays very hard. If you don't state things exactly as he did, forget about even getting points.
Great teacher, very entertaining lectures, funny and witty. I enjoyed showing up to class. The course work is not too difficult, although the tests can be. The highest grade I managed to get on a test there was a B-. He's a very critical essay grader. That aside, you will learn a lot even if you have to fight a bit more for the grade.
Interesting... at first. If you're not a Pulitzer prize winning writer, you'll have some trouble with this guy. He's extremely egocentric. Like if your printer cartidge is low and you turn in a paper with lighter ink, he'll down grade you thinking it's a personal attack on him. Also prone to outbursts of swearing at random things.
Not very clear and very arrogant. Very hard grader. Talks crude in class. Freshman may find him funny... but otherwise avoid his class.
He obviously doesn't enjoying teaching. He should just become a public speaker on Philosophy because he likes to hear himself talk. He is extremely knowledgable, but he chooses not to share this knowledge with his students and is offended anytime a student asks a ?. If he reads this, I hope he can change his ways, students would enjoy him more.

Dr. McAleer is one of the best professors at this University. He makes what would otherwise being a pretting uninteresting topic for me really interesting. He is witty and treats you like an adult unlike other profs at this U. You can tell he is really smart, and bonus! - his intellegence makes him very attractive.
At the start of the semester you will love this guy. Smart and witty and class seems fun. But after awhile you see he is moody, rude and arrogant. Hard grader, harder than he should be. Crude comments in class. He does not seem to enjoy teaching. Avoid this professor
Anyone who thinks this professor is too hard of a grader is just upset because they've been lazy. With any professor there needs getting used to their style. We are not in high school anymore, so toughen up! Prof McAleer is a great professor, DON'T avoid this professor.
Dr. McAleer, is a horrible prof in my opinion. He can be funny at times, but is aarogant. The readings were really short, but tough. He explained things in such a way that you had no idea what he was talking about. He should teach grad students insteed of undergrads. I wouldn't take him again.
one of the best professors ive had. also a great adviser. always willing to help. treats students with respect. good speaker and makes complicated philosophical material easier to understand. i don't understand the bad ratings at all. guy is awesome.
Do the readings, go to class and ask him questions and you'll probably do fine. Do read exams carefully as he likes to ask tricky/trick questions on the multi choice. Gives good study guides w/ essay questions ahead of time. Wouldn't take class for fun though.
Dr. McAleer, was horrible Tried to be funny at times. He is very arrogant. The readings were really short, but tough. he did not explain things well. He did not seem to like his job most days. Very moody.
If people say they don't like him, then they probably did not pay attention during class. You have to take a lot of notes, but he goes over every reading very thoroughly. If you pay attention and take notes, it's not hard. He gives test essay questions ahead of time so oyu can prepare. He tries to keep the class entertaining. I would take him again
McAleer is a really cool prof. I have his class at 8 am, and I actually feel like I want to get up early for his class. He is very helpful and goes into a lot of detail about the readings.
He is one of the hardest (but fair) graders at the university. He is funny, but does not let it disrupt the class. If you are serious about his class then you will do fine. He is always willing to help, one on one if needed. For those that don't like him, it's probably because they still think they are in high school. It is college after all!
awesome professor! really funny and extremely helpful! keep up with the readings and its an easy A! he gives you a review sheet and holds a review session before each exam, how much easier can it get!? very interesting class.
Professor McAleer is an excellent teacher when it comes to note taking and putting things into perspective so it is easier to understand. He is very outgoing and seems to love what he is doing. Be warned, his tests are pretty difficult and his class average has been a "C"
McAleer is a great professor! He is very funny and uses all sorts of analogies and jokes to illustrate his points. Your grade will directly reflect the effort you put in. Highly recommended
He is pretty cool, passionate about his class. lots of D2L quizzes, not too hard if you read. Hard grader on essays on tests. I find the class unbearably boring, and I sometimes don't go. HUGE MISTAKE. Don't be like me, go to class, keep up on readings, take good notes, ask questions, go to office hours if you need help, and you'll be fine
Yeah he may be witty and seem funny at first...until he uses the same joke or line over and over again. He isn't clear at all. You think you understand him in class, but the test are completely different because all he focuses on in lecture is making movie references or swearing to seem cool. SUPER HARD GRADER! He expects a book for the essay
Nice guy, class is interesting, if you do the readings and feel that you understand what is going on in class, think again! You can go to every class, read all the readings, study the test study guide and tank the test. Loves to use trick questions on test but claims that they aren't. Class was overloaded to begin with, tons of people dropped!
Not sure what all the bad reviews are about, probably say more abou the reviewee rather than the professor. Makes complicated issues easy to understand and is always willing to help you in understanding the material
McAleer is a pretty nice guy, but his class is NOT easy what so ever. He expects you to know and understand everything about philosophy. Don't even bother buying the text book or renting it you won't even look at it. He words things so you can't even comprehend what he is asking, on the tests you better study the essays for about 50 hours, no joke.
This class is definitely not easy. He has difficult exams (requires very precise essays), but decent lecture. If you actually read all the required readings and don't be lazy about them, you should do fine. Also has a cheesy sense of humor, haha
Professor McAleer expects you to put in effort and to reason things out for yourself. Don't miss lectures or you will get lost quickly. While his lecture questions can seem very hard the idea is to get you thinking rather than just regurgitating. The tests are very difficult and he is a hard grader but he respects effort and involvement in grading.
Prof McAleer is hilarious and gives the funnies examples and explanations! I thought Philosophy would be hard, but it's actually fun and pretty easy. Attendance is not mandatory, though crucial to understanding the Republic (the book that you have to read).
Great Class! Professor McAleer is fun, quick witted and you learn alot taking a class with him.
Professor McAleer is a great professor. I struggled with some of the abstract concepts of the course but he was always available to help you during office hours. I highly reccomend taking him for Philospohy 310!
Don't get me wrong, Dr. McAleer is a nice guy and really funny, but I'm not a fan of his grading. There are two exams and a paper that are most of your grade in the class. He's also really tough. Do all the reading and talk a lot...and don't be fooled by how well you do on the quizzes...the tests are completely different. Good luck.
this guy is just straight up pompous.
Although this was one of the hardest courses I have ever taken, McAleer made the content seem a lot easier. We spent the whole semester analyzing Plato's Republic, which should have been dull but he made it really interesting! Although the class was fun, his exams seemed impossible!!
This course is based entirely off of The Republic by Plato, which is a difficult read at best. Dr. McAleer is pretty helpful, lectures are decent.
Professor Mac-Daddy-of-Philosophy is a great teacher. He has a very broad knowledge base to bring outside sources to create analogies to the Republic. I see a lot of complaints about reading the Republic, but if you take notes during lecture you will do fine. Recommend Philosophy 101 with him.
Dr. McAleer is an alright professor at best but his exams are absolutely impossible. Prepare for trick questions and prepare to know The Republic extremely well if you want a decent grade. Attendance is not mandatory but I highly suggest going to class if you want to pass.
We spent the whole semester reading Plato's Republic. It was an awful book and extremely hard to follow. He grades pretty hard and I fell as though he focuses on insignificant details.
This class was dull and difficult. The only thing you learn about is Plato's Rebuplic. You really end up learning nothing about philosophy at all. He makes many crude jokes he thinks are funny. Class quizzes averaged at about 60%. Didn't like this class at all
Awful class. I thought it would be interesting but all we read/learned about was The Republic by Plato. Utterly boring, extremely hard tests and he's a really hard grader. I went to class, took notes, read, and still struggled. I wouldn't recommend
I had a terrible time in his class. Seems entertaining at first in his lectures but dont be fooled, this guys tests and papers are damn near impossible. I feel for the Philosophy majors who have to take his classes, man that must be tough. Take Myer or Spina for low level courses in this area.
The content is really hard to understand sometimes, and I think McAleer does the best he can to get people to understand.
Great professor, very funny, and does a pretty good job explaining complex subjects... but holy crap are his tests/quizzes impossible! Class averages are 50/60% always. They're very tricky on purpose. If you take this class, make sure you can devote a lot of time to it!
Philosophy wasn't exactly what I expected it to be. While I thought McAleer was a smart professor and new what he was talking about, we focused on one book that was really boring. The test has an easy multiple choice section, but the essay part is impossible. It was an okay course, but not my favorite.
Dr. Mac is one of my favorite professors I've met so far. He's hilarious and made class interesting for me. However, don't take this for an easy A. You will NEED to go to every class and takes noteshighlight your book. I skipped some reading but still did well. And from someone good at writing, I thought the essay part of the tests were very hard.
One of the best teachers I've had. He is always willing to take extra time if you don't understand. Prepares you exceedingly for tests by reviewing all content the class before so if you don't go to class it doesn't matter. He's very laid back, just wants people to listen during lecture (which isn't hard). Great teacher I highly recommend.
McAleer is very funny, class is kind of boring. Test are not bad if you study enough and take good notes.
He is the most picky and hardest grader I have ever had in college. He is not clear on instructions, he does not allow you to defend your work on papers or exam essays, and does not care about whether you pass or fail. If you are not a Philosophy major DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
You have to read the book, it will help you. The lectures are very entertaining, the jokes are hilarious. The tests are hard, this is not an easy A class. Go to office hours, he is really helpful.
Tests consist of about 20 MC/TF answers and one long essay, he gives you a good study guide and essay options in advance. Concepts can be hard but he's pretty clear and gives opportunity for clarification questions. One long paper that he is tough when grading. Not the worst class ever, but probably wouldn't take again. Never skip class!
Sean is the best professor I've ever had a class with. I'm actually considering a minor in philosophy just from this class alone. You do focus on the Republic by Plato, but he makes it interesting. If you're interested in thinking about abstract things, take this class!
One of the worst professors I have had. The class itself is interesting, but it seems like he purposely tries to take points off where ever possible. The essays on the exam are literally impossible. Multiple choice questions try to trick you and make you second guess yourself. Tried to meet with him outside of office hours and he said he was busy.
Very funny, nice, and respectful guy!
He is a very funny nice teacher but the material is so hard! If you don't show up to class you will not pass because you will not understand the book you HAVE to read.
Honestly, Sean is great. Your success in the class is going to depend more on the subject material. Philosophy can be tricky, but if you want to succeed Sean is always broadcasting his office hours and is available to help you. I would say philosophy is not for everybody. At the very least, his lectures are interesting- he's a pretty funny guy.
Sean is great and very passionate about philosophy. This class is super interesting, and he goes over everything that is going to be on the exams in class. He will go over things multiple times so you know the answer. Every exam has an essay and he grades pretty heavily on the essay section. There is a lot of reading, but he alsooooo goes over it
While McAleer tries to be funny and engaging, he neglects actually teaching the subject matter. The readings are incredibly hard to understand and when you ask questions he doesn't give a straight answer. He is the hardest grader I've ever encountered, and takes off for simple things like not leaving 'margins' on the sides of your essays on exams.
He has a difficult time explaining material so that the rest of us can understand it. The grades are made up of quizzes and tests. The multiple choice questions are always worded weird and confusing. If you don't word essays EXACTLY like he would, he takes a ton of points off. He has a short temper and can be quite rude. Do not recommend this class
Sean keeps class interesting and engaging but he makes his quizzes nearly impossible to do well on. He asks trick questions to be uses as 'learning tools' but the quizzes still count as part of your over all grade. He finds places to take points off wherever possible on exams. Doesn't matter if you read everything, probably wont do very well.
Professor McAleer is not an accessible professor unless you schedule meetings with him on office hours. He will contradict material in his lectures and then be upset with students for not doing the reading. However, the readings are hard enough to understand to begin with, and regardless of how closely you read it won't be good enough. DO NOT TAKE.
I had to spend hours a week on this class. You need to read A LOT, but even that won't prepare you for quizzes. He drops the lowest quiz score though. Really tough grader and likes to prove that he is smarter than you. I did enjoy some aspects of the class.
My favorite Professor of my Freshman year, Great lectures, understanding, and an amazing teacher. I wish I could, take another class with him. To pass just read the 1 or 2 readings a week and take notes and you'll be fine. Super interesting topics and super thought provoking. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Anyone who says he's a tough grader has seemingly only had easy graders in the past and has never had to put in effort for a class before? He has review sessions before exams in addition to answering questions on D2L leading up to exams. Literally just read and show up to class. Ask questions. I've never had a teacher be so open to questions
Every lecture Sean does is extremely thought provoking and insightful. I notice people who commented on him below say hes a terribly hard grader, but honestly as long as you show up to class and don't miss anything you'll be fine. Be willing to put in the work and your grade will reflect that.
Sean is a great guy! He is super approachable. Ive only taken one class with him but he is a fairly hard grader but if you put the work and time in you should be fine. He is super personable which i really like in professors. his quizzes can be tough. i took notes during lectures and that helped a lot for quizzes on canvas, so take notes
the class is hard but he's a really understanding guy and will work with you to make sure you have multiple opportunities to earn a better grade
Sean was an amazing prof. Hes super funny & very relatable. He really knows the material and goes above and beyond to help you know it. Go to office hours and get outside help from him and youll be fine. His tests & quizzes are very hard, but the material is really really hard to begin with. Be ready to read and put in work, GO TO LECTURE
good professor, great guy. His class made me think about ethical questions I never would have otherwise considered and my view changed to some degree on every topic we covered. you need to go to class and prepare for tests with the study guide, but the real key is to go to his office hours early and often. doing that will make the class awesome.
Does not prepare you are quizzes and lecture is bland. He switches from powerpoint to book to whiteboard. NICE GUY, but the content is not engaging and the class difficulty is way harder than what it should be for a 100 level course. Content is very difficult to grasp amongst many of my peers within the course. Wouldn't recommend taking this course
Sean is a nice guy but it is very hard to succeed in this course. I attend all lectures, read, and take notes and still am struggling. Quiz and Exam questions are very wordy. Exams are worth 90% of your final grade and are NOT easy, no clear way to study as the notes are not organized well or clear to understand. Would not recommend.
This is the hardest class I have ever had to take in my entire life. Professor is really nice and cares about content but it makes absolutely no sense. I have read the entire book and spend hours daily on this class and still can barely pass anything. Do not take this class unless it is required for you.
Dr. McAleer was awesome! His exams were tough, it was multiple choice and essays for every exam, but he prepared you well for it, and you had the essay prompts in advance. He was a really great teacher, and he was SUPER funny. He really got you engaged with the material, and he covered everything that was going to be on the exam in class! Awesome!
I loved Mac. I hated his class, but I loved Mac. He is very passionate about his field, but unfortunately I was not as passionate. He gives plenty of examples for lectures and important concepts. The Republic was not my favorite thing in the world, but Mac made it fun. I recommend him, but maybe not this class.
PHIL101 is not an intro class. Expects us to have prior knowledge of Philosophy. First day dove right into analyzing a hard book. Tests and quizzes are extremely difficult. He doesn't explain everything, expects us to know and love philosophy like he does. I wouldn't recommend taking unless you have a passion and base knowledge of philosophy.
Amazing Teacher, explains very well and is very down to earth. He basically gives the answers in lectures so just take good notes and its an easy A. Essays are hard though and he grades them toughly.
I would definitely read the text to make the content more understandable. If you zone out during this class then you are kind of screwed so pay attention. Maybe it just did not click for me but this stuff made zero sense.
Essays are tough in a sense that if you dont do it his way, you arent gonna pass it. Make sure you know the vocabulary words because youll need to include most of the in your essay if you want to 100% it
If you should up like you're supposed to and pay attention you will do great! He keeps the lectures entertaining and treats us as equals. For everyone saying he's a tough grader and stuff, welcome to college. He's a professor. He gives you everything you need to succeed and all you have to do is put in the effort
This class seemed harder than it should've been for someone who doesn't know philosophy. Tests were only 20 questions multiple choice with an essay. The essay prompts needed you to understand the topic and exemplify and unless you really understand philosophy you won't earn higher than a B on the exams. 90% of the grade is exams but he's nice.
Sean gets very defensive about student critiques. If you feel he hasn't gone into depth on a topic, which happens with many topics in his Philosophy class, don't even try to teach yourself outside of class materials because you will be accused of academic dishonesty if you even dare mention something he didn't say word for word during lecture.
I would not recommend, his lectures are always very complicated and confusing. Nothing related to what's on the exams. During quizzes, if you do not answer exactly the way he wants you to answer it, you will fail.
If you're just trying to get a free credit. Do not take this class, he isn't aware that it's an introduction and throws you into the deep end. He tends to be very complicated during his lecture and doesn't teach you the things you need to know to succeed in the assignments. If you do not answer things exactly his way, you will automatically fail.
He's a good professor but the essay portion of his tests are pretty hard a lot of his quizzes have a few trick questions, there's also a lot of reading.
Mcaleer is really fun and joking professor. Your grade depends on three exams which consist of 20 MC questions and an essay. The MC questions are easy, and the essays are graded toughly. He is a fair teacher and if you understand the material, you will be fine. He curved the class at the end which was really nice.
If you show up to class and pay attention/do the readings his PHIL 101 class is super interesting. He's an engaging lecturer but there is a lot of lecturing.
He's great, but the exams are written at a very high level using unfamiliar vocabulary and syntax that makes the question itself very confusing. Questions are included specifically to trip you up by changing one adjective in an otherwise true statement. He allows you to pick your own due dates for papers which is nice, but a nightmare for ADHD
He's a super nice and funny professor, however his lectures can be complex and confusing for a 100 level course and the exam's are quite difficult. The quizzes and assignments are also barely weighted so it doesn't help your grade.
I took this course thinking it would be easy, as it is a level 100 course. Sean however, has much bigger expectations. He does not follow his own syllabus- he WILL bring past material in, although he says the exams are not cumulative. Prepare yourself for lots of reading and analyzing material which doesn't make sense.
Spiteful.
The lecture content was super interesting, especially regarding Daoism and Stoicism. This is by no means an easy class, however if you complete your daily readings, prep for tests according to study guide, and show up for classes, you should do okay.
Do not take this course if you are just looking to fill electives. Sean is a nice and funny guy; however, he puts trick true or false questions on every exam and quiz that are impossible. His lectures can be confusing and he does not teach out of a textbook to help. Most difficult 101 class I've taken. Save yourself the frustration and confusion
Professor McAleer is hilarious. He throws in funny analogies whenever possible to keep the class engaged. If you skip classes, you will miss out on important content for the exams. In preparing for the exams, I recommend going to his office hours to show him your essay guidelines. He's very direct and concise about what will get you a good grade.
I love this professor! Super engaging, super funny, the only thing is that the essays are insanely tough, as are the quizzes. I also wish there were some notes on Canvas, but attend the classes regularly and you'll be fine.
Do not take this class unless you are genuinely interested in philosophy. You are set up to fail by your grade being almost entirely based on 3 tests that are very difficult. The course content is confusing. I spent the majority of my time in this class very confused and stressed. Not worth it. DO NOT TAKE
He does not prepare a slideshow with notes, so attending class is important. And if you miss one day, find someone in class or meet with him to catch up. He's a very nice guy and would definitely have him again. The class was my most stressful though lol. Prepare the tissues and get ready for some all nighters for this class.Overall a great guy. :)
Sean is a funny and engaging professor, but this class is no joke. The exams are brutal - lots of tricky questions that require deep understanding. Attendance is a must, and unstuck ai was a lifesaver for prepping. Overall, a rewarding but challenging course.
Prof McAleer is overall a great guy. He is a really nice professor, but his grading is very unclear. A lot of the exams feel like the questions could have multiple correct answers so at times it is very hard to tell what the exact answer is. He relies heavily on lecture-style teaching which is hard to learn Phil with.
While I feel that McAleer is probably a great guy, the way his 101 class is create I constantly felt like I was being set up to fail. He grades extremely harshly on the essay portion of his exams, and there are only 4 exams that make up most of your grade. A 101 class have not been at such a high difficulty, as someone with As all other classes.
Never take this course unless you are addicted to Chinese and Greek philosophy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor McAleer can be funny and charismatic during lectures. When it comes to exam, there is nothing funny about the way he grades. He's very unclear about expectations. Honestly, aside from the same corny jokes, he must use every semester. He's not a very good professor.
Do not take him. Very hard grader and not helpful. Trust me do not take his class.
This is not a typical 100 level course. Most of your grade is going to be based off of exams that are primarily written-response. He is tough with grading as well. Going to lecture alongside doing the respective readings will be your best bet to passing this course. PHIL 101 presents a thought-provoking challenge to those who are up for it.
This professor is amazing, I specifically look for courses with him. Although there is a decent amount of work required for the class, I felt it was a reasonable amount and if you worked for it you could have the grade you wanted. I recommend Sean to anyone who needs a phil class.
During lectures, it is clear that Professor McAleer is very knowledgeable on the subject and does go over the readings. But even after reading all the material and studying with his methods, I still end up failing. He is a very harsh grader on the essay portion of exams and only allows for one-sided note cards.
I am normally a straight A student, and I have never rated a professor before this. I took this class thinking it would be an easy A to boost my GPA. And when I tell you that this class is more stressful than Biochemistry and Anatomy and Physiology I am not lying. I would never recommend this class or this professor to my worst enemy!
I would not recommend this professor unless you love philosophy and are ok getting your ego bruised because he is a HARSH grader. I only received one A on one of my Essays and I spent days and nights working on it. His comments are frustrating but when you sit back and think on it, you realize he was right. This professor pushes you to do better!
Sean is an incredibly caring and patient teacher, incredibly flexible with office hours/individual help, and will make sure that any questions you have will be answered and done so well. That being said, this is not an easy nor typical 101 class, and I wouldn't take it expecting an easy A. Exams are tough and the material is dense-- but worth it.
I really like Dr. McAleer, but his classes are pretty tricky and you should make sure that you have the time to
Professor McAleer is very passionate about philosophy, and he is great at helping students understand the material. A typical class involved analyzing an assigned section of reading, with an exam about once a month. I really enjoyed the course I took because I like philosophy, but it might feel dry for someone less interested in philosophy.
