Sean is a fabulous poetry teacher. I have taken his class twice now and am still learning from him.

He is an awesome teacher! Also a really cool guy!

He is a very interesting teacher. His essay assignments are a little difficult. Grades a little difficult also BUT he helps you whenever yu need it so go to his office hours...that's how i passed his class.

The guy is hyper and at times seems unorganized, but he knows how to write and encourages students to tap into their creativity. He runs a very relaxed class and swears contantly but not let that fool you, he expects you to work.

He is so cool and down to earth. HE's the type of guy you want to be friends with. His essays are very long but he helped me improve my writting a great deal.

I wont lie, for english, he is not easy; however, he pushes you farther than you ever thought you can go. And if you work hard, you will see the payback. I dont recommend him for people who are lazy and unwilling to work, but for anyone else, hes great

Great teacher! very fun and outgoing. Loved his class. Always looked forward to it. tells students exactly what he wants on essays and doesnt do peer review--he reviews essays himself so it helps A LOT. I wish I kept him as my english teacher for 1A and 4 as well. Hes the best!!!

Sean was the best english teacher i've ever had. he grades hard, and expects a lot, however, he is very clear on what one's paper should pertain to. there are no peer edits in this class, he does them himself, which is very helpful. THANKS McFarland, you the BEST!!!!

McFarland is a hard teacher, but he makes the class interesting. You have to be willing to work in his clas or else your not passing. I highly recommend him.

I took him in the summer and I didn't know anything about english. I can honestly say, that I learned so much from him, no matter how hard, easy, or boring people say he is. He is a great teacher, and hey I passed his class, anyone can pass. Trust me I was doing so bad, but at the end I showed him that I was committed to do work.

There are few teachers you come across that have a strong concern for your future, Sean does. He's extremely helpful really, easy to get along with and he's a looker too. Take his class you can only benefit from it.

He is a great teacher, very down to earth and friendly, he goes in depth on everything and is very clear about his expetations for you from the class. I really enjoyed his class a lot, i learned a lot that i didn't know and i had an all around good experience. I would reccomend him to everyone..as long as you are willing to work hard.:)

Very Good teacher, always willing to answer any questions and is very easy to get along with and also very down to earth kinda guy. i enjoyed his class and did well. He really gets your thoughts going and thinking about the meaning behind things and gives out good information. Overall Awesome Teacher. I wouldn't tell anyone to take his class because he does not know how to grade. I had passing papers and he fail me. He was teaching 1a work in a 101a english. I wouldnt tell my worst enemy to take the class.

He's not easy if you don't pay attention but if you stay focused the class is fun. He is very helpful but very blunt so you can't half ass anything or your screwed.

He is a must, take this teacher if you want to learn something. Great teacher that will try to push you to the limit. In fact that is one idea he teachers from one of his books "Limit." The trick about this teacher is, simply be passionate about what you are writing about, and put some thought into it!

mcfarland is one of the best english teachers at chabot... he makes the class super fun and interesting. just go to class and you will do good in the class. i think everyone who takes english should take mcfarland hes a cool teacher

If you are not the best student Sean is a great help. Very supportive and willing to help. If you are a good student and good at English he may not teach you much. His books are interesting and he is very enthusiastic. Most of the work is reading and writing essays (at least 6pgs). Does cancel alot of classes.

Sean is a cool person. If you show an interest in the work he will help you. His poetry class is real laid back and motivating for those that are not writers (such as myself). This past semester there were always people dropping in to giving us spoken word live!! What an inspiring teacher and class!!

Great Teacher one of the best that Chabot College ever had. Chabot College would be crazy to let him go. Any student who hasn't had the chance to take his should. He is fun, whitty, outspoken and truthful.

it' very tough class, Sean is coolest person ever, but his class is difficult. i barely passed his class even though i worked really hard. He checks all the errors on your essay and grade them very strictly fair. If your lazy,don't take him.

Great teacher. At first it might be a little hard to understand what he wants but if you ask questions he is very helpful. He will help develop you into a good writer. He is very entertaining be ready for some four letter words. I always went to that class mostly because I was interested in what he was going to say that day. Never boring!

Take him! Usually English class makes me zzzz but his was really fun. He is really engaging and he tries to make you laugh. Don't take him if you don't want to read about environmentalist stuff though, cause that's all you're going to be reading.

I took him for English 1A and i really liked him. he kind of bounces all over the map, but his class is really fun. We made a board game based on community college. He is completely opposite of a sterotypical stuffy english teacher: he wears air jordans and curses like a sailor. He's pretty freaking awesome :D

From what i heard from other students Sean Mcfarlend is the best English teacher at chabot, the dude knows how to teacher and he also makes the class very fun and also hes very funny.

The guy is very nice and helpful but his class requires a ton of work, and he makes sure that you earn the grade you deserve. We wrote 5 essays, which are 9-11 pages in length. So don't expect to get an easy A, you will have to put in a alot of time and effort. But like everyone is saying he is a down to earth guy, but not the easiest instructor.

I liked his cool personality and his ability to make anything funny, however, his lectures jump around quite a bit and, as someone who works hard to meet deadlines, I found it annoying when he didn't hold people accountable. All in all, I would definitely take another class with him.

Cool teacher. Assigns about 4 essays that gradually get longer. The whole class is based off essays. He assigns homework that's not really mandatory. I did no homework and did 4 essays and got a b.

Sean is one of the best teachers chabot has, he is very helpful and wants his students to thrive and be comfortable with everything. He also teaches passion and purpose which he encourages all his students to take. He is very funny and doesn't grade too harshly. Love him!

I'm not a good writer especially with essays, but he teaches you to write in a way that was easy. Last semester I struggled with writing one page of an essay, but with his method I wrote a 9 page essay and didn't realise it..

Mr Sean is a good professor who does not judge you on your grammatical errors. He is more interested in knowing your inner thoughts or ideas on a specific topic. I learned a lot from his class. He is a chill professor but I will recommend him not to curse in every single sentence :). The class was very informational and worth knowing those skills.

Funny & insightful. Essays are +6 pgs, but you always end up writing +8; its easy. Curses a lot, but not aggressively. Teaching style is to the point. HW is optional, but beneficial. Gives good feedback on both homework & essays. His class grades rely almost entirely on essays. He arrives late to class frequently, but ends class early often, too.

Mr. McFarland is a great teacher and I recommend. He definetly trained me to write longer papers, and I've done it. It's just that I was taking 6 classes in the summer so it was kind of difficult. I got better at writing essays, thanks to him. Hes so funny, but comes to class late 15-30 minutes late, but thats okay :) -Police dude

For this class you need to purchase 3 books. They're all very interesting. You have to only write 4 papers but they're all pretty lengthy so don't think it'll be a cake walk. Mr. McFarland is a great teacher for students who want to be there. While not always punctual he always encourages his students to do their best and helps in any way he can. The books he assigns are not easy reads nor are his essay prompts easy to write for but their difficulty is rewarding when you apply the skills you learn effectively.

I HIGHLY suggest you bring your laptop to class, he gives you so much time to write. You work on 1 question at a time which results in a long paper, 10-12 pages. Please don't freak out. Stay on top of your reading. Order your books B4 class starts and highlight quotes as you go, if you do that you'll be several steps ahead of everyone else.

Literally one of the best teachers you could take at Chabot. His class is always a lot of fun he has you write long papers but the specific way he has you right them are really easy and they challenge you. Shean is the most hilarious proffersor at Chabot, his passion for his lectures is amazing. Get ready to do lots of reading, very interesting books , but you MUST read in order to pass his class. He's super chill and will make you step out of your bubble if you're shy , which is pretty cool, also he has a big heart and helps students a lot!

I took Sean Engl 1A class during the summer. I recommend that you only take 1 class if taking this class during the summer because this class takes a lot of work. Get ready to write 11-page essays and make sure to do the Rule of 3 on them! Sean is an awesome teacher because he gives interesting talks, cares about students, his books are not boring.

His class was very easy. He made us write long essays but they're not hard to do as many would imagine. He goes on tangents and some of the stuff he says doesn't make sense, but he gives us enough resources and knowledge to incorporate into our essays which is helpful! Also, if you miss one or two classes, it's easy to catch up.

I am not the greatest essay writer, but this class helped me a lot! Theres NO final or midterm. As an international student, I enjoyed the class a lot. I learned really valuable things. The essays that weve written werent tossed into trash can after grading and forgotten. Whatever we did in the class, it was directly connected with the real world and it had real good effects on other people in Hayward. I wish the semester was little longer.

Thoroughly enjoyed this class, not a typical English class since Sean works community projects into interesting essay writings. No long boring texts to read. I am so happy I took this class, he has a great sense of humor and is open and flexible but holds you accountable so don't try to take advantage!. His classroom is inviting and homey!

Not your typical English professor as he favors community-based learning. Really chill and funny professor! He'll assign some papers here and there along with a project on Hayward. 10/10 you will pass as long as you show up.

He was one of the most memorable professors I've had at Chabot. Looks like a hippy and acts like a student. One of the few professors to make me laugh out loud in class. All we do is write really long papers, but the way he teaches actually helped me write 14 page papers with a breeze. I loved the class and he teaches alot about our community.

Had him for Engl 1 & 4. One of the best at Chabot! He genuinely cares about his students & surrounding them in a chill atmosphere. He's hilarious! Expect projects/essays but they're easy. No tests or reading books which is cool. Only had to read one for Engl 4 but that'ts it. The most engaging class you could have, it's great. Take his class!

He's an amazing/chill person, he isn't the best professor. Told books were mandatory, ended up buying them, didn't use them. The only thing that makes this an English class is the amount of research you do. Hardly gives feedback on essays & makes you care more about the city's needs and wants. Oh man Sean is the BEST. I enjoyed taking his class. Hes hilarious & cusses a lot which makes the class fun. He lets us do our work outside & he teaches class in a non classroom environment. He does give out a lot of essays but if you work hard, youll pass. Hes amazing

Prof. Sean is an Amazing professor his grading criteria is easy and the essays are group based so if you choose the right people that have the same idea then your paper can do wonders and its an easy A if you try.

Sean is a really cool and nice teacher. I was anxious at first because writing is my weakness, but his assignments and essays are bearable. Might be a little too much for some, but the topics he gives you are the really important ones like, climate change. He is also very considerate!

Sean McFarland was my first professor after being out of school for over five years. He made my summer class very enjoyable and exciting! Sean is just one of those professors that you wish taught every class you took. Explained the material very well and it showed he cares about his students.

Huge essays (expect 15-22 paragraphs, 1-2 pages long per) that took 1-1.5months to do. Made us interview strangers during covid. Essay topics easy to do, but the interviewing bit was really off-putting. Pushes due dates back a lot. Essay feedback not too helpful, but if you write a lot and put a bunch of quotes then he'll like your essays.

Sean is a great professor who provides a lot of autonomy in his class. He's very lenient with due dates, as long as you have self-discipline and don't need much structure you'll do great in his class but you do a lot of writing so be prepared to be challenged.

Pay attention to due dates, asks questions, and do the work! Prof. makes the class even better with his smart remarks and inspiring comments to students.
