He is a really good professor. he is there if you ever need need help with something. the time period he gives you between essays is very reasonable and he has a great system set up to help you edit your essays. overall it's a good class and he is a good, funny teacher.
if this is the sean mcpherson i think it is thats funny! i had him in high school and i almost had to stay back becuase he was such a bad teacher! i did great in school but he went out of his way to make it almost impossible for people to pass! and he was always in trouble for hitting on female students!
He is a terrible teacher period. He pretends to be your friend, and when you go in for conferences he says your essay is good and you have to just fine tone some words. Then when you hand in the final and get it back theres red marks all over it, and you end up getting a C. He completely lies as well. If your looking for an A in english avoid him
He lies. He picks favorites (always FEMALE). He's unclear. He makes fun of people. He's rude sometimes. He thinks he's funny. He tells you one thing and then wants anothr once you pass it in. He makes bad jokes. He made us buy 4 books, idk if his class is a good idea. Find a better professor.
I agree with everyone, he absolutley lies, and does pick favorites. He will try to seem like the cool professor but once you do something wrong he will try to make you feel worthless.
He knows his stuff, but he thinks he's awesome too though. He tells you one thing and then wants another when you pass the paper in. Hard grader at first, then lightened up. Three kids in my class dropped because he was impossible at first. Does pick favorites, yes are females, sometimes makes mean jokes. If you pay attention and try, should do OK.
DIDNT REALLY LIKE HIM
Hes really nice and cool, he is a wicked good teacher. He does give a lot of papers but he will help you and tells you whats going to be on the test. as long as you take notes and pass your paper in on time your good. its not a boring class at all.
He's alright. He gives a decent amount of homework in between papers, but also has individual conferences for a week for each paper, so during that week you only have to show up once for ten minutes. Kind of full of himself, but funny.
he is a good professor he is a little full of him self but he knows his stuff he is kind of a tough grader but if you do what he tells you to do in your confrence you should be fine. confrences every 4 weeks or so, during that week u only go to class once for 10 minutes
He is sooo full of himself. Don't take him for a seminar it's way too much work just for a seminar. I have more work in his class than all my four other classes combined. And it's stupid busy work. Avoid him if possible he sucks.
Not much use with the books that I had to purchase. I did enjoy the class felt as though it was a very easy writing intensive course. I would recomend this corse because it is interesting and fufills many core requirements
McPherson's English 101 class is very easy. He makes the subject fun, and isn't as tough of a grader as put on this website. Going to try to get 102 with him next semester
Professor McPherson is very nice and, in my opinion, an easy grader as well. I am doing very well in his class. Additionally, in ENGL 101, one of his assignments is the creation of a movie to go along with a cause and effect essay. He makes the class very involved and fun. I look forward to his class everyday.
McPherson is an interesting teacher and a really nice guy. There were 4 papers total, not much other work, some quizzes based on the book, but he mostly went over the stuff in the book in class. Show up to class. I got A's on all my papers but a C for the semester based solely on attendance.
Not a great teacher or a great guy. If you are taking this seminar drop it NOW. I warning you. There is wayyyyy too much work for this class even when its a seminar. I had more homework in this class than all of my classes COMBINED. Seriously rethink taking him. He picks favorites and picks un-favorites. Save yourself.
Great professor! Funny and keeps me awake! 4 papers total and gives pop quizes to make sure u do your reading (like 6 chapters). Tells you what he expects, fairly fair grader. Lots of group work. talks football. I recommend him!! V
He is the man; best English teacher I've had at any level.
I love Mcpherson! He's so energetic and his mind wanders off subject all the time but it's hilarious. I found him to be an easy grader but there's a lot of hw. Read everything he assigns b/c there's a few quizzs. Also 4 papers and a video and a final. No midterm. Take him!!
I had him a few years ago before I moved out to California and I loved his class! I still remember the things he taught me to this day and use his notes in class!
McPherson has unrealistic expectations for a blue collar college reality; most students work full time jobs... He pushes more homework onto his students than all my other classes COMBINED. He is also very condescending to his students and make you do a "side" project with each paper,... movies, oral presentations, etc. Dont take him.
Best prof. I have ever had. I could never stand English until I had him. His class is great and he makes you work a lot so you can get better at writing. He makes you explore different presentation methods. I have learned so much from him that I still use in all of my classes.
Had him for 101 and knew I had to take him for 102, best choice I had ever made. He is the man, hands down. A lot of work but its for your own betterment and it isn't that hard, he is a very lenient grader. Just a great guy overall in every aspect.
Professor McPherson is great! He is a down to earth person, but isn't a pushover. He is very specific about his expectations, and truly cares about your improvement as a writer. Attendance is important, and make sure your work is on time or a letter grade is dropped.
Ahh McPherson, he is the man! Always cracking jokes and talks about football constantly with the guys. He is easy to talk to and never makes you feel uncomfortable or stupid like some professors. ALways in a good mood. Theres a good amount of work but its reasonable. I would say take him if you can!
He is a sincerly a nice guy. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There is a required blog post each week and those are the only "papers" ever written. You use the textbooks every day in class, so make sure you buy them.
Stay away if you are taking for English 254! Unclear with what he wants. Papers are extremely difficult. Picks favorites. Never hands back work. Students design the class. Sounds good, but really isn't! Thought we would learn about teaching literature to ELED classes...completely wrong. Learned nothing to help me as a teacher.
Professor McPherson's English101 is an AWESOME class to take, even if you hate English. There's no papers due, just a 400 word blog post (so minimal) that is submitted online at the end of the week. No homework, lot of peer review in class. Strongly recommend for an easy A & Professor McPherson is a great guy, always saying "What a beautiful day!"
Very Energetic! He is very clear with what he wants written for research papers. You get to pick all your own topics and the research papers are pretty much the only homework along with reading the book. He uses inexpensive books and fully utilizes them. I would recommend taking his class!
Weekly blogposts (wish I had known before) and be prepared for ALOT of group work. Blogposts are literally worth your ENTIRE grade. He has a condescending attitude so I guess you should get ready for that. Also weekly reading quizzes.
I wouldn't take this course unless you were willing to put all of your spare time into it. It is by far the hardest course I have had to take. I put in so much effort and barely passed. He barely helped when asked and most of the time would just give you a link to answer the questions.
I love him!! He is so fun and energetic, There was work every week for the class such as 400 word blogs but other than that its a really grest class. We do a lot of peer reviewing which is nice to hear ideas from other people than a teacher. And he tells jokes every friday! "classic Joke Friday"! And he is pretty handsome as well.
Well.. He's a great professor. Very smart but his grading system sucks. If you are usually absent or late you will not pass the class. Then again it isn't fair. I end up the semester with C. Then I get a B+ on the final and I end failing the course due to too many absences. There was need to even try... honestly. Beware be on time or he'll fail U!
Just don't take his class. His grading system sucks. Expects too much from his students.
Never take him. At first he seemed really nice and easy , but it didn't take long for him to load on the homework and get mean. He expects way too much and if you miss one class your grade drops and he doesn't let you make up anything. If you do one thing wrong on an assignment you fail it. He's so unclear of what he wants.
Great teacher! Learned a lot in this class. Very fun guy.
First day of class he seem pretty cool, shared a couple of jokes and things about himself, then the semester took a turn for the worst, hard grader, its either and A for the day or and F so don't miss class. He makes you read 2 books and theres 3 essay with a bib to go along with it. He's tedious with the littlest things in an essay good luck!
Prof. McPherson is hilarious and energetic. For the most part, he makes you feel welcomed & comfortable in the classroom. He does give a lot of work, & isn't clear on the criteria for essays (doesnt give feedback either). He will get angry if you don't do the readings & give quizzes on the readings. He really cares about his student & their success
Was a good guy at first, then got a little annoying. He knows the subject so well so he expects too much. He is nice & makes you feel comfortable in class. 400 word writing assignment each week. Need both books. Everything we do is included in syllabus, so no surprises. I'm more of a math person, dont really like english. But the class wasn't awful
this guy is terrible. awful grading system. seems nice and cool at first but 100% do not fall for it.
great guy. As long as your work hard and don't cheat you will do well. He is a very nice person and great professor. He understands the tough situations many students comes from and is willing to work with you when circumstances are tough.
Took thinking it would be a straight forward class. ended up having to retake engl101 because of him. I even got a 95 on his final and still failed his course. then recieved an A- from Somers. dont take him if blog posts arent your style of writing.
There are 4 research papers but he holds your hand the whole time step by step. You can redo any paper for a higher grade. No notes just lecture about how to write a research paper. Makes you buy inspirational books about being a good innovator and has in class discussions about it. Takes attendence but is very laid back and funny.
Professor McPherson is the man! I had him for Eng 101 and Eng 102. For 102, you write 4 papers, but he definitely helps his students through it. It's college, classes aren't meant to be really easy. If you put in the effort, he sees that and tries to help. You edit a lot of classmates' papers too--gives good feedback. Take him! He's great!
He is socially a very nice professor who will help you achieve the grade you want. He lets you rewrite essays and will give you the full new grade. I got a D+ on one paper revised it got an A. He uses all books regularly and you need to read them to do assignments. He doesn't grade your homework on if you did it or not, he gives you a letter grade.
Grades homework based on quality. Miss class F for the day. 4 essays and reading journals for each chapter assigned. Uses every book. Don't recommend taking his class unless you're up for the challenge. I did learn how to do research papers but other than that I wouldn't take his class again.
I had Dr. McPherson for Writing Rhetorically in Fall 2014 and I enjoyed him. He was really cool and easy to talk to, and I was able to understand the text he gave.
400 word paper every week, tough grader, doesn't answer emails, pop quizzes every Monday.
McPherson is a extremely nice person. He makes sure to be personal with you, learn your name, and a little bit about you. Although he is not too tough of a grader he is very specific and does not always explain what he is looking for so well, but you will get the hang of it. If you don't like other people reading your writing do not take this class
If you don't like writing don't take this class, as there is a 400 word blog post each week. Have to read every week and often times he has a quiz on the reading. Overall he's such a nice guy and emails back pretty fast.
Good teacher. Laidback guy. Doesn't talk the entire class and likes to joke around with everyone in the class. Has you do400 word blogs every week and after awhile they get really annoying, but are pretty easy and has quizzes on readings every week.
He is my favorite! He's super laid back and funny (or tries to be) but he is always willing to help. All there is for homework in writing a 400 word blog every week on the type of writing you learn about that week. It really isn't too bad, because it's only once a week. Class also goes by really fast.
DO NOT take him for ENG102. While he is laid-back and funny in class, he piles on way too much weekly assignments along with the six page papers you have to write. He's fine for ENG101, sometimes he is a little unclear in what he wants but so long as you do the (not nearly as taxing) weekly homework in that class, you should be fine.
Took him for engl101, which was good/misleading. This class was horrific. Gave more work during pandemic. So rude, so demeaning especially via email. Avoid at all costs, if not, seek therapy. Unfair with grading too. I know you read these professor so I hope this helps you in the future :). No one cares you're from Cali
I would not really suggest him if you are a quiet person. he tries to joke with you too much and is a bit obnoxious. a ton of work and is a very very picky grader.
Had him for two semesters, just be aware you have to read cause he will give you pop quizzes anytime and he is a hard grader but overall the class isnt that bad, you do a lot of group work
Class sucked. There's three 6pg papers, and 2 books that are used every class. If you get stuck taking his class, avoid emailing him or talking to him at all costs, he's pretty condescending.
Genuinely the worst professor Ive ever had. He makes it extremely difficult for you to do your online work. Not helpful or supportive. Made my English class the worst experience.
I wasnt sure how I felt about Prof. McPherson at first and I was struggling but when I started asking for help, he was there to help & guide me on what to do. He gives very good feedback and gives a lot of opportunities to improve your grade. Ask questions, do the work & youll pass. I would recommend to anyone
His Blackboard page is a mess, I've not seen another blackboard page like it. I don't know how or why he made it like this, but it's an awkward mess. He gives a lot of work, but most of it is just busywork, time consuming, unhelpful, but not all that hard The required reading reads like a bad self help book He's condescending during lectures
many dont like his class I didn't mind it. a post and 3 replies each week and then an essay every 2-3 weeks. It was really structured and the same thing was due each week at the same time. You don't even really have to look to know whats due because its always the same. His essays can be pretty tricky and lengthy but he lets you revise them after
He seems cool in class, but don't bother emailing him or asking for extra help, he's super condescending and really not helpful at. Gives so much busywork as well, Im personally someone who needs some emailing/extra help to understand concepts and i wasn't given the help I needed.
Really not a fan of this dude. He seems cool in class but you quickly realize he is super condescending and rude. The way he grades is ridiculous, if you forget something as minute as a period in an essay he will fail you. He would always single me out when I was in class and make an example of me because I did not attend every single class.
He is a nice person but he is irritating to have as a teacher. He is super condescending and annoying. Grading is ridiculous, lots of homework he gives out requires you to email him for approval and if you do the work without his approval, you will get an automatic F. Emailing him is tough since he turns off his email after 5:00pm. Bring textbook.
Hit or miss. People find him entertaining, I found him condescending. He outright made fun of me a few times and even told me that not understanding something I needed help with was my fault. You have to email him multiple times a week for homework and if you're even a minute late (5:00 PM deadline), it's an automatic F. Don't forget your textbook.
He is very nice and helpful. His class was a lot of group work and discussions which isn't bad but stinks if you hate working with others.
I sense a fellow potato eater. Sean was pretty cool. A little uptight and energetic for an 8am but I will let that slide. lots of in class group work. very straightforward with expectations and workload. goes through everything step by step. there is something off about his attitude sometimes - he redeems himself by telling a joke each friday.
This class is forgiving if you put in the work. Professor McPherson is an upbeat professor but will only put out what you put in. Expect homework due each week on Sunday night. A lot of randomized group work in class. Informative but infrequent lectures, take notes. Grading criteria is clear. Allows re-submissions on essays if submitted on time.
I thought of him as a great professor. He was always very eager to help students that were struggling, and gave great advice. Assignment or essay instructions were always very detailed and informative.
Most class days when we were Actually Learning English, lots of group work. Has a 7-day revision policy for HW submitted on time, but I literally never knew when he would grade things and weeks passed by. But if it works out, rinse and repeat, you can go from a D- to A. Felt awkward at times but wouldn't mind taking again for the revision policy.
Professor McPherson would make inappropriate comments towards students in front of the entire class (telling students that are struggling with mental health that they are "too young to have problems", commenting on a student's weight, and more). I ended up dropping the class after reporting him for making a sexist comment towards me.
He was a nice guy but didn't seem to have much patience. There was a good amount of work throughout the week but it was manageable. There was group work every class. A few essays but wasn't too hard. If you put in the effort it's an easy A.
He's an okay guy, good teacher. I definitely thought he was inconsiderate at times by making inappropriate comments or heckles at students. His class has a clear expectation for the most part. His instructions are written and posted on blackboard to refer back to. He's tedious about MLA format and how HE wants his titles to be done. Not bad though
pretty chill class, he's an easy grader and gives very clear expectations so it's an ez A. multiple homework's weekly at the beginning. seems like a lot of people dont like his humor but he wasnt weird in my class, everyone would joke back w him. very professional but once u get used to that hes easy to talk to. oh and lots of group work in class!
He's a good teacher, and a tough grader, but the hard grading criteria he has genuinely help you excel in his class
He created a comfortable class environment for me and my classmates. Compared to all of my other classes this semester, everyone was so friendly, which took away any anxiousness about groupwork(which you do a lot of). He was very understanding about everything. Grading was a little tough, but you really learned from him. He's an awesome guy.
I enjoyed taking this class. He always made it upbeat and fun, and I recommend taking him for it. His assignment descriptions were very straightforward, and there wasn't too much each week for work. He was super understanding and was always there to give any help needed. All four papers were only 3-pages, which he helps you get through.
Extremely condescending. He posts a week overview ahead of time, but work is tedious. Is the embodiment of "this won't fly in college". Treats the class like it's a high school course and is strict on attendance. Doesn't really answer your questions inside or outside class. Definitely would avoid this guy if possible.
DON'T TAKE THIS PHONY. HE IS SO CONDESCENDING. HE IS STRICT. DON'T EMAIL HIM FOR HELP BC HE WON'T HELP YOU. I TOLD HIM YOUR CLASSWORK IS TAKING A TOLL ON MY MENTAL HEALTH AND HE SAID IT'S MY FAULT
Make sure when you're selecting courses you separate the two McPhersons at this school! I made that mistake. I would never take a class with this professor again. Super condescending. Tough grader. Hard to reach him outside of class and he is far from an approachable guy. Find another English professor and do not suffer through his class.
Very particular on grading, it wouldn't be such an issue if he weren't so condescending. Attendance is mandatory yet he is constantly cancelling class.
Took this professor for both English 101 and 102. He taught both classes well. The workload increases in 102 and includes more grindy assignments, but he allows rewrites for low essay grades. He sticks to the syllabus, especially for grading. As long as you do your work, you'll be fine. People who say he's a horrible professor need a reality check.
Not a fan, he didn't have a lt of depth when it came to material
He's a very interactive professor, but the class has two tests and a research paper that is the majority of the grade, he's very interactive with students and he will call on you but he is respectful and can be funny. But you really have to read the book and study because the tests are hard and he grades very intensely.
He is an amazing professor. I took him for Technical writing and we always had 1 hw and a quiz due on Sunday which made it easy to stay on track. He was funny and understanding. I can tell he genuinely cared about each one of us. He took the time to ask us questions while doing attendance. Take him!! It was an easy A and I recommend 100%
