He doesn't explain well. He goes off the subject and doesn't know what he is doing. sometimes he confuses students. The test are somewhat complicated.
his notes are not detailed, but you make the first exam.and you have questions in advance, so it should be easy. but 2nd exam should be hard as his notes are not detailed, you'll have to read the book for deep understanding. he gives you assignment so it helpe to buffer up the grade. gives you extra poits.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS IVE HAD
Greatest professor. Really cares about student. Although he is a new professor, he sure an teach some other ones how to teach. I have never ran into such a caring, helpful, and smart teacher. A+! Class is hard, but it is an upper division subject so you can't expect it to be easy. Good luck!
He is a very nice and careing prof. The course is hard, but he does not want detail just (big picture). One of the BEST.
One of the best professors at CSUN. He actually cares wether or not students understand whatever he is teaching. He is always there for office hours or whenever you need help... I had him for two different Bio classes Highly recommended Tests are tough but if you study you should do good.
I highly reccomend this class b/c its not only easy(more than 1/2 of class got A-B grade), its EXTREMElY useful for premed and bio majors. Lectures consisted of bacterial mechanisms of virulence, and the topics were NOT boring, I wish all my classes were like Dr. Murrays. HE cares about his students and is very fair.
Goes over stuff fast. Posts notes late night or a few hours before class. Expects you to read it all before class so he could quiz you using CLICKERs every single day of class. He definetely has favorites (teacher's pets) but if you are a girl and good looking it's an easy A. it was for me ;)
Dont trust these comments made on here, sounds like Murray himself! Class is hard, so you do have to actually study a lot, however he does have his fav's especially if you are a girl, so I know this sounds bad but it helps alot to be his pet.
I agree with the comment below, The class IS hard but him having his favorites and being overly nice to the girls makes it even harder. He actually let a girl go on his computer and e-mail this other guy, pretending to be the teacher just to mess with him. This is VERY UNPROFESSIONAL !!
I don't know what these people are talking about. He is a really nice guy who really cares for his students at a personal leve. The class isn't that hard, but lots of materials are coevered. I got a B because i missed a test and the makeup exam is HARD. Or else, this is an easy A! GREAT PROFESSOR ! i wish i could take more classes with him.
you don't need a book. exams are based off powerpoints. he's not very clear at explaining things its more of you gotta learn it all by yourself. he can be very anal some days and others he's very nice.
Dr. Murray is so cute and nice. He cares about his students a lot. His tests are not that hard. I recommend recording his lectures.
He makes it easy to understand and definitely record the lectures. All exams are off power points, but he tells you key slides. If you have questions he is always open to them. I did struggle sometimes, but overall he is very sweet and wants his students to do well. If you don't study it shows, but overall an interesting and fun class.
Dr. Murray is so cute. He is a little hottie. You just want to give him the biggest hug everytime he laughs. He makes the class fun by picking on students and using them in his examples. Always eats yogurt during office hours but never hesitates to answer a question. Recording the lectures is a MUST!
Wonderful teacher. Despite what people are saying below, recording the lectures is not needed. Just make sure you print out his lecture slides and take good notes on them during class. The book is not needed.
Do NOT listen to the person below me. Recording the lectures is an absolute MUST. Over 1/2 of the class records the lectures. With Dr.Murray being so hot it is really hard 2 lose focus and get distracted during lecutres. I often got distracted by his cutness. If I hadn't recorded the lectures then I wouldn't have passed the class. haha
He is one of the best professors out there. Very smart, funny, and helpful. He cares about students, and he is always there to help you out. We had to read lot of scientific papers and discuss it in front of class, which i think is great for us biology students.
Funny and engaging, this Professor will give you an entertaining class whist keeping your interest in MicroBio alive. No book, his exams are straight from his lectures. You MUST record him as class time is short and unless you're a stenographer you can't take notes fast enough. Lab is fun and quick unlike others who talk for hours needlessly.
Very fun and entertaining instructor, which can be a bad thing. He talks too fast and tells alot of stories which incorporate the material. RECORD HIS LECTURES or else youll be lost.No book, just lecture/slides.Exam is difficult/cumulative but he curves. It's not an easy class but youll do fine if you study every week and dont cram.Dont slack off!
very difficult moody
This class was made much more difficult than necessary. Every exam was cumulative. Material had to be understood on the spot or you would lose points on the clicker questions.
This is a material intensive class. He speaks very fast and it is hard to follow his lectures because sometimes he seems to wander off into other topics. You have to do clicker questions IN CLASS so missing would be a bad idea. He does curve but it doesn't really help. His exams are difficult.
Hard class high pressure. you must be able to learn fast and remember everything
Hard tricky
I can't believe all the negative comments on here.. Dr. Murray is by far the BEST BEST.. did I say BEST professor I have ever had the pleasure of taking at CSUN. His lectures are crystal clear, he makes you think and not just regurgitate information. He truly wants students to learn not just the material but skills to prepare them for their lives.
This man is one of the best professors at CSUN for sure. He is extremely clear, concise, and very fair. His tests are difficult because he doesnt want you to just regurgitate information, you have to make connections! Luckily we now have lecture capture. Study at least once every week and you will do well! Amazing class, I loved it!
Don't take over summer, he expects way too much in 6 weeks. He consistently refers to how Harvard and Stanford test and how no one should get 100% because then you don't learn... uhh this is CSUN not Harvard. He's a good teacher in general but his tests are unnecessarily hard and tricky (and that's all you're graded on so if you don't do well....)
Took this professor for Science100, he is really nice and caring professor. He expected HW and presentations to be perfect but he would give good feedback. He wasnt a tough teacher and would make you think in class and had interesting discussions, he is not unorganized but his monotone voice just made him seem lazy sometimes, but good professor
smart guy, willing to curve, understands students have other priorities in life. I would highly recommend him
great guy! easy class! easy A! just show up and do the homework. its really not difficult. he will mark you off if you don't the homework right or if you just don't do it, but its simple so don't worry. the two books are kinda mandatory because you have to write a paper or two on them so. honestly, just do what he assigns and you'll get an A
He is very helpful and fair. He often helps you with your career goals. You will be challenged but learn good study skills and earn a friend who will help you suceed in graduate school. Re-watching his lecture capture is mandatory for a good grade in his bio courses
He's one of the best professors in CSUN. Just carefully watch lecture capture and take good notes. The materials are A LOT and that's what makes the class challenging, so be prepared to study everyday. However, he's nice, caring and willing to help.
It was his first time teaching Physiology this semester, so it was kind of a work in process. He was learning along the way with his students. The tests are curved so that was a major plus for a physiology course. I'd recommend taking him, he moves at a great pace and is very helpful during office hours. 4 tests non cumulative and 3 research papers
It's his first semester teaching this course. The powerpoints were not his own so it was confusing to follow along since he would skip slides. The material itself is difficult to digest but it's not impossible. Testing format is unnecessarily difficult. There are 4 exams and 3 research papers. Tests are curved so passing is somewhat likely...
His lectures were all over the place, talks way too fast, jumps around on slides. He is not very good at teaching just reads off the slides, I was teaching myself. He doesn't know how to condense a chapter down. Tests are hard but he curves the test grade of the whole class to 75% so a D might be an A. he doesn't believe in study guides.
Passionate and knowledgeable on the subject. Lectures and teaching methods are very fast paced, and disorganized. Lecture capture is available to review lessons. 4 non-cumulative exams, and 4 very easy papers that can help raise your grade. An A is possible if you put in the work. Very caring, curves exams! Good luck and make sure you are prepared!
Avoid if u have the chance. Speech not clear, moves to quick with his power points and is extremely paranoid when it comes to taking tests. Yes he does have a class average curve, but the only reason is because he probably feels bad due when he was writing these difficult tests. Tests are extremely difficult, assignments are extremely long. Avoid..
Dr. Murray was a fantastic lecturer. Al you have to do is make sure you understand what is discussed in the lecture. If you don't understand, review the textbook and you'll do fine. He curves his test and encourages office hour visits for further discussion.
Murray is fine for 315 lecture, although he is hard to understand because he speaks quickly. However, avoid him at all costs for any lab. His grading and practical structure is a joke. It is timed. Never in my extensive college career have I come across a teacher so unwilling to assist student success. His behavior is completely unprofessional.
Professor is really nice and approachable and is accepting feedback in order to improve teaching. Exams are mostly multiple choice with a core exercise put in every exam and some written answer questions. Lectures are overwhelmingly long (50-80 slides) and are gone over in maybe a day. Study questions very helpful and curves are huge.
I enjoyed taking his class. All lectures are recorded and easy to review from home. I liked the idea that in case I missed some information, I was able to listen again. I believe he was a fair grader. He curved almost every exam. I suggest printing out his powerpoints ahead of time and making notes during the lecture.
Mr. Sean Murray's online class was very well organized and provides all the materials for students to succeed. It is a very rigorous class with a ton of quizzes and a few exams which made it impossible to slack off in. He is always there to help and reach out to. It's definitely a hard class but he is a supportive and great teacher.
A great professor! the quizzes help when taking the exams. Class is on a point system, and he curves some tests. Does not curve class at the end. Read the textbook for exam 2, that's the hardest. Exams are all not cumulative and professor is open to feedback and mistakes on the quizzes. You learn a lot about physiology in his class.
Professor Murray is a great professor! All the lectures were recorded & posted which made it easy to take notes and review, and quizzes reinforced what topics you needed to know for the test. He communicates exactly how to succeed in his course which I really appreciated :)
He was my last choice. The class itself it very complex so I recommend studying and also reaching out to classmates for a study group helped me a lot pass the class
Professor Murray is honestly so knowledgeable. He clearly loves human physiology and cares so much about his students' success. The content isn't all that easy especially for those who aren't science majors. Weekly untimed quizzes, 4 timed exams, no final. All exams were curved but quizzes are what you get. Use the study questions he provides!
WOW WOW, DO NOT TRUST OTHER FEEDBACKS. If you attend in person class/lab it is hard to learn biology (unless its in your blood) now imagine how hard it is to learn online with no zoom meetings. Quiz every week 3 super massive hard tests for 100 points each 60 questions in 90 minutes (not a single one on google) class mean below 70 DO NOT TAKE
Very inconsiderate, making it inaccessible for me as a deaf student. Weekly quizzes, 4 exams, lectures kinda helped but quiz questions are completely different than lectures and book. Some were in the book, but not much. Avoid him if you can.
Do yourself a favor and try to take this class with another professor. Just avoid Sean Murray, that's it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! PLEASE LISTEN TO ME. IT IS HORRIBLE. I'm actually a great student & this class feels absolutely impossible especially online. His tests are extremely hard & have NOTHING to do with his study guides & the textbook. PLEASE do not take this class for whatever reason. AVOID THIS PROF! I was catfished by the "good"reviews. Awful.
RUN LIKE THE PLAGUE! Save yourself some time and don't take this man's class. He originally told us that he understands that not all of us are science majors and that he would make it easier and streamline. THIS WAS A LIE! He does not know how to condense material. The quizzes do not correlate with the study guides. Overall horrible professor.
Honestly would not take again but I needed this class. He is also very strict on NOT using outside sources for exam questions and will report you if you use outside sources. No homework, only weekly quizzes. 20 questions in 20 minutes which is a lot. Very hard. Honestly do not take with him. Learn from me. He is nice although his class is not.
I HATE THIS CLASS. I wish I was lying and it may sound like an over exaggeration but this Prof. sucks. The material he gives you to study (study questions, slides, videos) do not help What. So. Ever in completing your 25 QUESTION QUIZ IN 20 MINUTES. I'm genuinely trying out here and STILL FAIL MY QUIZZES.
Honestly even if he's your only option and its your last semester STAY AWAY. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Save your time, effort, money b/c you probably won't learn much, just stress and hopefully you don't but by the looks (not just myself but testimonies from other students as well) of it might fail.
This Professor is something elseā¦he has lecture videos on every chapter set up to his YouTube account (each vid is 10-15 min, 4 vids a chapter). Its all just quizzes and exams. Plus he actually put the classes on lockdown browser and tried to have students come forward or face academic dishonesty with the dean. Do not take him.Too much stress
This Professor does not include all the information for test or exams in any 1 place he just says them briefly in passing through this lecture videos. Which is incredibly frustrating when preparing notes and studying. He also does not allow any outside material and is paranoid about cheating. He also just sucks. Please do not take this Professor!
This is a very difficult class with this professor. There is a lot of material, and the lectures are only emphasizing the textbook. Weekly quizzes are 20 questions w/25 minutes to complete them. The exams are very difficult to complete. There are many trick questions throughout both. I would not recommend this class to anyone it is very stressful.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, weekly quizzes that drop your grade so much, his averages are about a 66% and does not care if majority of his class is failing. Save your GPA and get another professor, I wish I had added another semester just to AVOID Dr. Murray. This has been the worst class I have taken at CSUN. He really doesn't care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boy, this has been the worst class I have ever taken. I worked so hard to maintain a high GPA and now this class is gonna destroy it. There is a quiz every single week, which I do not mind because it keeps you on your toes, however the amount of work and information heavy for these 13-20 question quizzes is insane! INFORMATION HEAVY!!!
He recommends 6-9 hours to watch and study the lectures he uploads yet there were times where he would be behind in uploading them and would do it two days before we had a quiz.Little time 50+questions that include essay questions and multiple choice. He grades harshly in the essay questions basically just put them there to take up time and points.
Avoid this guy at all costs. If you need to take him then prepare to have a terrible time
What can I say, he is a big disconnect from the reality. Take someone else, thank me later.
His exams/quizzes barely matched up to his lectures, and was also all timed, so you barely have time to sit and think of an answer because he sort of expects you to know it on the spot. This class is very exam/quiz heavy with little to no assignments, so if you are not good at studying, I do not recommend taking this professor (especially online).
Tests were hard. half of the test were a couple short(but actually long) answers and like 40 multiple choice questions within an unreasonable time
The test questions DO NOT match what he says in the lectures. The questions are completely different from what he is teaching. He always thinks everyone is cheating and make u download lockdown browser. He could honestly care less if you pass or not. Do not take him just because u wanna stay home trust me take the class on campus with someone else.
I am very dissapointed because I wanted to love this class. This professor will just read his slides no explanation he expects you to know what every word means and teaches nothing he is basically just reading which makes the class horrible because every two seconds i have to go search what a word meant
The professor began the season okay but once we got to our first exam, half of the students got a 0 because he thought everyone cheated. It was literally open note and he still said everyone cheated.
Murray is abysmal. Avoid this class. If the choice is between graduating a semester late and taking a class with this ambulatory constipation of adolescent resentment, either take the L and delay graduating or find a winter or summer section.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I usually do fairly well in science and was excited to take physiology, but this professor was terrible! He seems like an intelligent man but he has no compassion for his students. The quizzes and exams were unnecessarily difficult. Avoid him at all costs.
This would have been such an interesting class if it hadn't been for Murray. He is the worst professor I have ever had. I honestly don't understand how he can get away with it. The exam question answers can not be found in lectures, sometimes not even the book and it took him over a month to grade them. I memorized every word. Do not take him!
Only reads off the lectures and never actually teaches anything. Makes the class more stressful than it should be. Not good at communicating or being reasonable
Only take a class with him if you want your mental health and GPA to suffer.
absolutely HORRIBLE professor. I regret taking his class.
So long as you are able to dedicate a lot of time for this class, attend class, and keep up with the lecture videos, you should be good in the class. Dr. Murray really cares for students and only wants them to succeed. He gets excited to answer questions when it reflects connections from previous lectures because it shows your understanding.
Do not listen to the comments that say his exams are impossible. I listened and OVERLY stressed. After leaving my exam, i felt nothing but good about it. It was not that bad. He gives 20 ec on exams and curves alot. listen to every second of his lectures, do the study guides and practice quizzes, you are prepared for his exams. Hes kind/caring.
INSANELY ABYSMAL. Never again. He is getting free money off of FOUR YEAR OLD videos that he CONSTANTLY stutters/cuts out in. This is the ONLY way to actually study, so you really don't have a choice but to watch the videos while filling out the study guide. my grade will tank bc he caught cheaters and took away extra credit/more FRQs/more proctors.
Very easy class. Just writing handwritten essays. Few easy books to read that you will write an essay about and discuss. Mostly group projects. One annoying thing about the class is sometimes he doesn't cancel class when he's only going to say like a few things that could have been an email.
Worst professor probably at csun. Nothing but a scam artist who uses covid material in 2024 and does nothing but show up to the test. He is backwards when it comes to teaching and you can tell he doesn't focus nor care for his students. Yes he is college professor but at this rate, he shouldn't be. Nothing good to say, nothing good about him.
Honestly I wanted to drop out of college because of this course. If you aren't majoring in Bio please take another professor. I have never felt more defeated and clueless throughout my college experience. Professor is nice; it doesn't matter if you don't pass. lectures were videos we had to watch on our own and in class all we did were discussions
Despite Professor Murray's bad score I encourage you to take advantage of him! He deeply cares about students and is very supportive. He has a flipped classroom which is extremely beneficial if you use it the right way. I wouldn't recommend taking him if you are not at all a biology or healthcare major. He is there to help you learn not just pass!
Honestly, DON'T take this class if you don't need it. All of the material for this class is online in boring videos. If you are going to take his class, you have to teach yourself everything on your own. Also h your whole grade depends on these tests.
This was def the hardest class I've taken. He is nice and cares about his students but his lecture class feels like alot of info being thrown at you but nothing is clear. You watch videos of him going over slides, do practice quizzes and go to class to do free responses. I barely learned anything and had to crash course everything. I'm exhausted
Good lab but many students wished they had taken a different professor. He needs to add more assignments for lecture because he just get graded on tests and the final and gives a lot of ec but your grade can quickly drop which is a pain. I would've liked to see the ec points weekly on canvas so I know where I'm at
He uses a flipped classroom so all of the learning is done at home. He uses lecture time as "review" so if you don't watch his videos, don't bother coming into class. His tests are the only thing he grades you on and is curved because of extra credit, but a lot of people still don't do well due to how he runs his class. Proceed with caution.
This course barely ever had homework. There are several in-class essays, but as long as you show up and keep up with the book readings when supposed to, they are easy points. This course was very informative on multiple topics, such as undergraduate research. There was no midterm or final; there are group projects but it's simple and easy research.
I don't recommend taking this professor if you are a full time student and w
Worst professor I've ever had. Told our class after our first exam, if we didn't get above a 50 on the exam, we should give up bc we are going to fail anyways. Many students reported him to the Bio Dept. & they didn't do anything about him. He was rude & his lectures were useless reviews on his videos recorded during covid. Avoid at all costs.
I have had many horrible professors and I managed to pass their classes still. His class was one of the first times I felt that I wouldn't be able to. I adjusted my studying strategy but still felt that it wasn't enough. If you have 8+ hours to put into this class then I would say its okay. But just be prepared to learn everything by yourself.
I wanted to love this class so badly but I feel as if Professor Murray makes Intro to Microbio unnecessarily difficult. I think that the difficulty/test-heavy aspect of the class outweighs the actual learning experience. It's kind of sad because he is a caring professor but lacks the ability to properly teach and educate us.
DO NOT take this professor. He doesn't actually teach. He has us watch ed puzzles before every single class, get in groups, answer questions, and share with the class. Literally never lectures in class. You could say the correct answer but if you don't say it exactly the way he wants then its wrong and he will embarrass you in front of the class
If you have the opportunity to pick a different professor, DO IT. He does not teach a single thing, he reads directly off of slides. He is constantly late and will go over hundreds of times how he is a "non-linear thinker." The only good part is he ended class early most days, just be prepared to be bored and wishing you could leave.
