Good lecturer and posts full notes. He is a fan of tophat and it is for marks so attendance is necessary. He's hilarious and very approachable if you have any questions. Would recommend.
Great professor, the only thing I hate about the lectures is he makes you get into groups and do assignments together almost like a high school class, I would much rather just take notes and try problems on my own rather then stressing over finishing a problem to hand in in 5 minutes...
Amazing professor. His lectures are clear with lots of examples and TopHat questions. There was a weekly pre-reading quiz so this was one of the only classes I actually used my textbook in. Midterm was way easier then the online assignments and the labs were just participation marks (18% of final grade). Definitely a GPA booster coarse.
Lectures were useful and he made sure to incorporate a little humor into physics. During finals, he was very approachable to answer any questions we had and explained it very clearly and made sure we understood concepts. Def a + for this prof.
Even though the material can be pretty boring, Prof. Stotyn is a cool guy and made the lectures actually interesting. He's super approachable and knows his stuff, and he's more than happy to help out in office hours. I'm taking another class with him next semester!
Great professor! Did what he could to make classical mechanics a little less boring. Show up because you get graded on tophat, hated doing those group assignments though.. Overall great guy though would definitely recommend!
He was very enthusiastic and funny. Made a first year physics class a lot more interesting. He is very approachable and answers questions well. Very good professor and would recommend for any student taking physics.
Funny lectures, great prof. Only downside is he turns off nearly all the lights- making it EXTREMELY easy to fall asleep in his 4pm lecture. If you've taken high school physics, you'll likely do well in the course. Overall, I would recommend taking this course with Dr. Stotyn.
Stotyn is a pretty funny prof and is definitely willing to help in his office hours. Be sure to show up to class because he frequently uses TopHat and sometimes makes you do group assignments which both count as participation grades. The weekly pre-reading quizzes and online assignments were a good tool to stay on top of things.
Started the year off feeling a bit unsure about his teaching style but grew to like him as the semester went on. He gives short group assignments that are to be completed during the lecture time, which really helped you apply your knowledge. Very helpful during office hours and a hilarious guy. Makes physics less boring.
Funny lectures and animations. Really chill prof. Only problem is he turns off 99% of the lights- so it was super easy to fall asleep in his end-of-the-day (4pm) lecture. It's better at noon. If you took physics in high school, this course will be nothing new (so it's a good choice for an option/elective).
The midterm for this class was really tough so they curved it a lot. This may change for future courses. But he is a good prof, very clear and straightforward. He gives both individual and group tophat questions in class which are good practice for the exam! He posts all his notes online incase you miss class!
Be sure to go to class for the TopHat & in-class assignment participation grades. Super easy to get 100% in the lab & assignment portions of the course. I didn't do great on the midterm or final but came out with an A because of the lab and assignments. In other words, don't freak out if the tests are difficult you can still do well!
Sean is a really great guy! He's funny and engaging, and his lectures make sense. He's new, but he's a great prof! Would have definitely taken PHYS223 with him if I had to take it.
Great prof! I had him for 221 and 223. His lectures are clear, and his TopHat questions are similar to multiple choice questions on tests. He is really helpful in office hours. 221 is an easy A+, but in 223 you really have to work for your A because tests are tough. They curved the midterm. If you ace assignments and labs, it's very doable though.
Dr. Stotyn is an exceptional professor... highly engaging and very helpful. Integrating real world applications and connections to other areas of physics and his research specialties, Dr. Stotyn makes physics 223 particularly interesting. His notes are immaculate, he is highly approachable. Invest effort in the class and you will succeed.
Extreme amazing prof, very clear and detailed on how to solve and approach questions, from easy to hard questions. Very easy going prof also easy to approach after class, I hope ill have him again in a later physic class. he also uses peronal life experience for his TopHat examples lol
Dr. Stotyn was an excellent professor. He used TopHat almost every lecture to affirm students' learning, and provided fully worked answers for each problem presented. He is extremely clear in his lectures and does not surprise you with new concepts on tests.
He was really great at teaching the class. He's great at explaining the concepts and providing exam-like examples in class. He's a such funny and nice guy as well. Very engaging prof.
Awesome Prof! He loves what he does and students love that passion!
Amazing prof! I've never rated a prof but Stotyn is so worth writing one for! He is so genuine and helpful. You can tell he is passionate about physics and he is so respectful towards students its kinda unbelievable. Overall amazing person too.
He gives lots of great practice questions in class. Dr. Stotyn conveyed the material well and sometimes slipped in a joke that got the whole class laughing. Fantastic professor overall.
Stotyn loves making connections to other areas of interest, especially to astronomy. It makes the content a bit more interesting and provides some context for the concepts outside of just the problem scenarios.
Dr. Stotyn is the best professor for intro physics. He is funny, engaging, and does a great job at explaining concepts. The TopHat problems are very helpful. Attend his lectures and do past exams and you'll succeed in this course.
Honestly, By far the most caring professor! Down to earth and genuine and truly cares about the student and their well-being. Super friendly and approachable. I don't need to take another physics class, which is good because Its not really my thing but if I ever had to I would HANDS DOWN take it with Dr. Stotyn!!!!!!
best prof by a long run!
At the start of the semester, he was an amazing prof, I was understanding stuff, he explained things really well, thought of him as my best prof. Few chapters in, his teaching method went downhill. This course is for people who haven't taken phys in HS but he explained things like we already have which made things crazy confusing. Won't recommend.
The guy had a couple of gems in his slides. It's worth going to every lecture just to get that golden meme every once in a while. He explains things really well and he's never in a bad mood.
Great Teacher! Always kept the class entertaining!
Dr. Stotyn was great. He is a very caring and funny guy and did a good job of going slowly through difficult concepts. Would definitely recommend taking his class.
Awesome prof! Would take any of his courses again!
First day but nice guy
Great for 221, but useless for 223. He only ever tells you the theory behind how you would solve a problem on exam. He is way too qualitative for a physics class in which most students have taken calculus. Assignments were difficult because the questions were far harder than any examples he gave. Nice guy, but pretty much useless.
Honestly, physics was one of my weakest subjects since high school; it was very hard to understand the concepts behind everything, but taking physics with this professor made understanding physics fairly easy. He is caring enough to answer questions in a clear manner and gives good feedback, if you go find him during office hour or through email !
Undoubtedly the best prof out of all 259 profs this semester. Really nice guy who would answer any questions you'd have and ensure you'd understand. The course is still very tough however, but he did a good job in softening the difficulty of it overall. His extra examples on some concepts were better still.
Stotyn is such a passionate and approachable professor. Lectures are pretty good, sometimes a little visual heavy but overall, the material is presented in a well organized fashion. You can tell he really cares for his students in the way he teaches! I would definitely take a class with him again.
You have to attend class since his lecture notes cover the basics. the understanding of how things work is all verbal. Which means write down what he says since its super important. Stotyn is far superior to all other 259 profs. Try to get him at all costs.
Angel. Dr. Stotyn is super enthusiastic and clearly loves teaching. He made this course as easy as humanly possible. He was very nice about only lecturing on what would be on the exam. Some of the other profs for this course taught extra info that freaked people out. Try really hard on assignments, pre-reading and tophat for easy marks.
Stotyn inspired me to teach myself theoretical quantum physics. His enthusiasm is what kept going when times were tough.
Highly recommend taking his class. He's great, fully explains difficult topics and makes them easy to understand. Lots of assignments, but I really liked it as it forced me to keep up with the material
Unreal guy. Go to class just to see his memes and bitmojis. I didn't take physics in high school, so he was a lifesaver during my first year. Lots of opportunities for easy marks in this course as lab is only based on participation. Responds quickly to emails and sticks around after lecture. Don't leave things you don't understand to last minute.
Prof Stotyn is a really nice guy. He tries to keep his lectures interesting and does multiple examples. TopHat lectures are usually pretty useful and he goes through the examples pretty well. Online homework is very useful for practice. Labs are an easy 100%. Designed for people with no physics experience but having the previous experience helps.
Great professor, he was extremely enthusiastic about the material. Even if you weren't too interested in the topic (where I don't see any reason why), his teaching methods would induce interest in what you're learning. Always around to help if you don't understand much and his powerpoints are pretty helpful.
Dr. Stotyn is an amazing professor, loves teaching and is great at explaining concepts. He is extremely helpful outside class as well. I highly recommend taking his class.
He is very passionate about physics which is great for a physics major. He's very fair in terms of marks, since he adjusts the tests as needed and tries his best to aid the students. He demonstrates course material with pretty good diagrams and will not hesitate to answer questions in class.
Hes just a really good prof. Hes engaging and he clearly loves what hes doing. Would definitely recommend
He is an amazing Prof. I got another professor for Phys 259 but always made time to attend his lectures. If you attend his regularly , you don't need to study the textbook. Explain all the small details of every topics , explain tophat Q&A . Your basics will be crystal clear if you go to his lectures.
What a guy. Gave it a 4 for difficulty coz E&M is just a pain in the gluteus maximus, had it not been for Stotyn, probably would've given an 8 out of 5. Not possible, but woulda tried obvs lmao
Dr. Stotyn is one of the best professors at U of C. He has a great deal of clarity to his concepts. He is very passionate about Physics, and is extremely approachable. Highly recommend taking his class!
His lectures did a good job of explaining the material and they were also funny or had a mind blowing example.
One of the best professors at U of C, not said lightly. Keeps lectures fun, but also very educational. Try to attend his lectures as they really help you see into the material better. Cannot say enough good things about this professor, he is a saint. Super approachable, and invests in his students. Very passionate about Physics and teaching it.
Sean is quite a good instructor, and he really cares about all of his students. He takes a really difficult to comprehend topic (relativity) and breaks it down so that you can understand it. He gives both the mathematical background and the physical intuition to the topics. My only complaint would be that he goes too slow sometimes.
He's alright. His notes are very very minimal and just barely cover the easiest topic, leaving harder questions and concepts up to you to understand. I like when he does notes on the doc cam better.
Great prof, teaches really well. Really knows how to teach physics and gets important points across. Physics to me is a challenging subject so I really appreciated the effort in him using nice slides. Uses tophat a lot so make sure you attend lectures.
Nice enough but not helpful. Too much theory and doesn't spend enough time on examples. Talks to slow.
Just attend class, do your pre-readings, do wileyplus and make some friends to do the tougher online questions. This man's pure gold.
The best comparison to Dr. Stotyn would be a mediocre high school teacher. He cares about his students and what he teaches, yet still does not have expectations. In terms of a university lecturer, he does a fantastic job. Most of the class is high school physics concepts raised to a whole other level.
Stotyn keeps you engaged the entirety of the class. He uses TopHat to make sure you're paying attention, and even if you get the question wrong, you get 50% for participation. He is understanding and a super nice guy. PHYS 227 has a lot of information to remember and process, but when a prof puts on enjoyable lectures, you easily retain that info.
Great guy! The final was a bit tougher than most people expected, but this course is fairly easy to begin with and Stotyn prepares you well. You can tell he genuinely cares about his students. My one criticism would be that I wish he wrote out practice problems in class, otherwise his notes were clear.
Stotyn is an amazing professor, he genuinely cares about his class and is funny. PHYS 221/211 are basically the exact same as physics 20 in high school so if you understand that then this class will be very easy. The final was long and hard but if you study you can easily do well
Professor Stotyn makes physics fun, interesting, and is great at explaining complicated concepts. He is also the most "human" professor I have encountered at UofC so far. I learned so much in this course!
Best prof for 259. Great at explaining and has decent notes.
Super excellent professor. When classes changed to online for COVID-19, I found no diminished quality. The class itself has a lot of group work but TA's mark it with you so you get to see what went wrong. The class was very complex for me but Stotyn was easy to reach and very helpful.
A gem! Loved physics with him even though the class content was quite difficult at times
The best prof in first year engg for 259. Skipped my lectures and attended his instead. Better at explaining concepts, but the course as a whole is still difficult to follow. Their slide system is awful for taking notes in class. You're better off just listening to Stotyn explain material; he does a good job.
Great professor, you can tell that he loves physics! Lectures are organized and clear, his tests are a bit difficult, however, if you study the resources he gives you, you will do fine. He allows room for error as he believes that they are a part of the learning process, a great attribute for a prof to have!
He's a great prof. Lectures are clear and questions given during them are a good guideline for tests although they are a little bit difficult. I didn't take physics 30 in high school but it didn't matter because he was really good at explaining. If you need help, he's there and he's funny too.
One of the best physics professors I've ever had. His notes are easy to follow and he is always willing to help.
Dr. Stotyn was a great prof, he did a very good job teaching all of the concepts in an easy to understand manner, and was easy to talk to outside of class via email or office hours. Also a very funny man :) I wish I could've taken his class in person because he's supposed to be even better in person, but he was great during online classes too.
Difficult course for someone who didn't do high school physics at all. Stotyn definitely helps as his lectures are clear and so are his explanations. One complaint though, is that his examples in class are seem easier than those on the test, but perhaps that's because he makes physics seem so easy. Great guy, pretty relatable as well.
Sean is hands down one of the best professors I've had in my academic career. He prepares well organized lectures beforehand that he's comfortable modifying to accommodate students and truly cares about your comprehension. 3 for difficulty only because PHYS 629 is general relativity, and it's tough material, but he makes it very digestible.
Really nice and accessible outside of class
Stotyn isn't the one to do the lecture videos for this course, yet they are thorough and show in depth derivations for most formulas. Overall the course was well done and organized and both the midterm and final seemed fair. He's fair with assignments and participation marks too. Overall, a well run course.
Solid prof super nice but ppl take advantage of him.
Had him for PHYS 369, and while the scheduling got a bit mixed up, Dr. Stotyn was the goat. His lectures and lecture notes were great and he posted lots of practice. While the labs were a bit confusing, I would still highly recommend taking Dr. Stotyn.
I've now taken two courses with Dr. Stotyn, and he's been by far my favourite prof I've had. He looks out for students and is very willing to accommodate needs. He saw that we had a lot of midterms one week and gave us all an extension on our homework. The man is a hero
aggressive. The TAs he hires takes off marks for no reason, including if they think you're "too mean". Makes you pay for 2 minute lecture videos. His slides are incomplete and don't actually have the information you need. Hates feedback
Did not personally teach the course but he is the course coordinator. Seems to be very horrible at designing labs. No online lecture videos even though Schulich is supposed to be an active learning program. Too lazy to make his own assignments and homework so he decided to outsource it to a random PAID website instead? Not really good at anything.
PHYS259 was truly a ride the first few weeks. Sean Stotyn definitley runs the course okay with the exception of the inconsistencies between what is put out on Achieve assignments and what's taught in class. However, there was a clear problem and lack of respect for students based on the treatment of TAs during labs. TAs were rude and impatient.
I am grateful he made 50% of our mark based on a category thats easy to get 100% on, so you can basically pass on purely doing the assignments. Although the textbook, tutorials, and lectures were mostly theory and did not well reflect the test questions. Test practice questions are provided though which was great.
Truly grateful for the fact that the exams didn't contain any curve balls, expectations were very clear going into them. Gave lots of resources to practice from as well. A few of his TAs are extremely rude to students (manbun) and the lecture videos from achieve felt like they were AI generated and terrible. Still a great professor though.
Relatively easy course, but awfully organised. Lecture slides don't contain all info you need, made 2 mistakes in the answer key for the final, all the assignments were on a different platform and didn't fully reflect material told in classes.
As a course coordinator, I don't think he is on the same page as what is being taught to students. He is writing some of the most diddy blud exams I've ever seen that have little to no correlation to the course material.
