She is a hard teacher that expects you to memorize everything. If you cant figure things out on your own then dont take her. During lab periods she will leave the classroom to do who knows what and your stuck with questoin that cant be answered.
This woman has no business teaching! She did nothing but read along with the chapter during lectures. She did not explain or expand on anything! She also was unavailable for extra help alot of the times during our lab periods.
This professor belongs anywhere but here. Anyone can read powerpoint and borrow other teachers exams. She had a bad attitude about everything and was not willing or available for any help. It would have saved me time to take this class online I would have learned more. Her tests were not what was presented to you in labs. Take elsewhere if possible
I am taking Dr Thomson now and really appreciate her helpfulness. The class is hard, but if you're willing to put some effort in, you get a lot out of the class. She is by far the most knowledgeable instructor that I have had at Germanna!
I was really scared to take this class, but having a great instructor like Dr. Thomson helped me get over that! She is always available with extra help during her office hours and explains things so that even I can understand.I am also having a lot of personal issues and she is VERY understanding about them. One of the best classes I took at Germanna!
She's very organized, which helps a lot with this class. She always had powerpoint presentations and study guides on Blackboard ahead of time, which was great. Not easy by any stretch, but definitely worth the effort!
Dr. Thomson will go above and beyod to help her students understand the material. She gives lots of information and extra web links to addional studying material which helps when test time comes around. All in all, shes a great teacher and I've enjoyed having her for this course.
This was one of the hardest classes I ever took, but Prof. Thomson made it bearable. She's really helpful and nice, so I'm taking her again this semester!
She's GREAT!
Dr Thomson's class is not easy by any means, it barely seems like an A is acheivable. She is not leinent on grades either, but she is one of the best anatomy teachers at germanna (compared to some of the others)
Very challenging class, and a heavy workload. Dr Thomson broke the material down and explained it well. She's very helpful and has a ton of office hours. She opened the lab for additional hours so we could study outside of class. A's are definitely attaninable, but you earn your grade in this class. One of the best professors I have ever had!
Great Prof. Smart and very organized.
I have taken her class in classroom setting and online. She would have been more effective if she had shown us key points on models or charts. Especially since there can be several terms for the same thing. Online was frustrating as well, your not able to see your test after completion to learn from mistakes.
I took this class for two semesters online. It's not easy, but she's very organized. Also, she'd do just about anything to help as long as you are doing your work. Definitely recommend her if you want to know the material!
This teacher has no business teachings, she grades ridiculously hard and I would never recommend her to anyone. Pick another teacher if you want to be successful.
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken.I'm getting ready to start the nursing program, and I feel like I am more ready because of Dr. Thomson. She was always available to answer questions and was so organized!I have taken other online classes and this was probably the best one I've come across.Take her if you want to learn your stuff
This class is the hardest class I've ever taken. It seems like an A is impossible. The work load is incredible. It seems she's helpful depending on her mood. She's slow to respond to e-mails, and has very limited office hours. Her tests and quizzes are impossible! I will say she knows her stuff, but again, is helpful sometimes, and not other times.
I took this class online & it had to be THE WORST class experience I've ever had! I had to work my butt off to pass! Although she knows what she is talking about, I NEVER got the feeling that she wanted me to succeed & provided little to no help when asked. I've always loved the human body but she made learning about it anything but enjoyable!
I loved this class! I wasn't able to take it on campus and I was scared at first, but now I wouldn't take it any other way. I will be continuing with 142 this fall because I love the prof. Dr. Thomson was always there to help me succeed and she definitely knows what she's talking about!
I do not recommend taking this class if you work, have children or a life. It is impossible to receive an A let alone a B or a C. The quizes and exams do not go with the book. Everything is timed and its impossible to find the answers in the book within the time limits. She doesn't care to help her students be successful. GOOD LUCK if you get STUCK
BIO 142 online. This is a hard class, as it should be. She warns you in the beginning. You can take quizzes multiple times. There are also other learning tools provided to succeed. You have to be dedicated to get a good grade. I have 5 children and work full time and I currently still have an A in her class. Also had her for BIO141 online.
Terrible!I recommend Zelman 100% instead. She was not helpful and often rude. She caused me to miss an exam by being a week late with an email for accommodations and then refused to let me retake it. I had to talk to the dean to get my class refunded, I was so angry. Her labs were easy but often hidden and not explained in the syllabus.
"provided little to no help when asked" another summed. "The quizzes and exams do not go with the book Everything is timed and its impossible to find the answers in the book within the time limits" Also true. She barely provides what's ON your exams and was the worst teacher I've had-- and I went to UVA for 4 years!
Professor Thomson was pretty good. She posted all the materials online and had everything organized. My only complaint was that the histology pictures on the practicals were different from the ones in the book/lab, so I struggled with that part of the exams. The lab quizzes are also difficult as the images are different. Other than that, good!
I took this class before with another professor and bombed it. I took Dr. Thomson and it was awesome! She is organized, fair and will make you work hard. If you want to get into the nursing program, this is the class that you need. You'll learn a lot. Take her!!!
1. Doesn't give good feedback 2. late responses to emails 3. I've taken other an and bio classes where labs were MUCH better laid out and organized. Her folders and organization are out of wack. 4. She is not clear on assignments, how she grades 5. tests did not relate to materials 6. Not a coherent teacher. RECOMMEND OTHER.
I took her class online. Not easy. You have to put in a lot of study time. But if you work for it you'll get an A. Quizzes are pretty easy and you can take them multiple times. Exams are much harder and have to be taken at the school.
Horrible
I have read other reviews for her and was shocked. Maybe it's because it was only a 1/2 semester 1 credit class, but I thought she was great! Since it was only a 1 credit class, we didn't have to buy the book and all of the reading was online and it was interesting. All quizzes allow multiple attempts. Her class is engaging and interesting.
I can not even say that she test hard because you never see the exam after and when you ask her to be specific she is not. It is as if she could careless how you do
A&P takes a ton of work, but now I'm in the nursing program and glad I took it with Dr. T. She made us work our tails off and now I'm right on track and ahead of my peers who took it with other instructors. Her class was well organized and very thorough. She's really nice and helpful and quickly answered all of my emails. Not easy but worth it!!
Good class, especially for online. Responsive, quick grader, easy to talk to. Taking this semester for 142.
Loved this class and the professor! If you focus on the study guides and work hard you can definitely get an A!
Just finished bio 141 with professor Thomson. This class is Hard! Very hard! But it should be. She warns you in the beginning of ways to be successful and if you listen you will do well. I studied at a minium of 3 hours sometimes up to 5 hours a day 6-7 days a week. At times I still struggled. Study and focus and you will be ok.
By far, one of the hardest classes I have ever had. Timely communication is not always there, and she is a tougher grader, but she will answer any questions you may have. If you work hard, and study even harder, you will do well with this course.
Hard class, but awesome online course. If you study hard you will do just fine, if you don't study, you'll be lucky to pass. Her online course is extremely detail oriented and leaves no guessing about what she requires. She expects studying but gives you all the information you need, you just have to put in the work. Will be taking her AP 2 class
Honestly, good luck. This class is the hardest class that I have taken. Anatomy classes should be hard, but this is ridiculous. The tests are hard and pretty much all fill in the blank. The diagrams on the test are not the ones that you study. It is really hard to feel inspired in this class.
I spent hours on this course when it came to study for the exams but the tests were still impossible. She is a very tough grader as well and the only extra credit that she offers is worth 1 point each.
Dr. Thomson's A&P class is one of the hardest to pass. A&P is difficult on its own but her class is not set up to be helpful at all. There's a lot of material due on top of having to make enough time to study for her extremely tough tests. Her tests do not go along with her study guides. Her practical tests are all fill in the blank also.
I loved this class! I'm finishing up my 1st semester and looking forward to the 2nd. The class is tough, but she gives lots of study material and lots of extra credit. I'm surprised by the ratings, but I think most people don't expect an online class to be hard. If you take her, expect to study hard and you'll be fine. Good prep for nursing school.
Spent about 3-4 hours per night, 5 days per week studying and reviewing material. Quizzes at the end of each week had unlimited attempts and the best score was kept. Tests were every 3 weeks and were mostly fill in the blank. Spelling matters. There was a drop grade at the end, which definitely helped, but class was still very difficult.
This professor is terrible! The study guides do not match the exams at all. If you know the answer but misspell it on an exam you get 0 points. Not worth it.
I took two semesters with her and it was a tough class! Study guides were perfect, though. If you know whats on the study guide you will easily pass the tests. So much work, but totally ready for my nursing program now!
Best online class I've ever taken. Lots of work, but extremely organized and I knew exactly what I was expected to do.
Good class and great teacher. Extra time with prof during office hours helped me get the grade I needed to get into my grad program. Loved all of the hands-on activities done in class since they really helped me remember the material! She was way too serious about being on time for class though
So glad this class was offered online since I couldn't have taken it any other way. Taking second part in fall. Prof is organized and returned my emails very fast. Lots of work, but if you do what she tells you to do, you'll learn and pass the class.
I took this class online & liked it better than my Bio 141 class. Overall Professor Thomson is a good teacher. She does provide a decent amount of study material, you just have to be prepared to spend a lot of time studying. She does give case studies at the end of every unit so be sure to study, the material is based off the unit.
This is a tough class and she can be a tough grader, but as long as you do the work she gives you you will be fine. She is a great teacher and is always willing to help, all you have to do is ask.
If you're an audible learner, like myself, don't take this course. There is no opportunity for extra credit and the tests are completely fill in the blank in regards to anatomy. Not much material provided so you'll have to do a lot of outside looking for answers, study guides and overall material for the course.
I had her for both A&P classes and she is great! The class is hard because of the amount of information, but if you put in the effort she makes it as easy as possible.
I took her for both Bio141 and Bio 142. She gives minimal information to fill our her study guides, and you have to hope that you go the right information filled in to study. She does not release the answer key for her study guides, which she uses for her exams. Her exams are brutal, and for the practicals it is ALL fill in the blank. Good luck!
She does not respond in a timely manor. She will not help enough to understand questions to even help you pass or do study guides. She is an extremely tough grader, so you better be so close to perfect. If your not available on her time then she is unavailable. I highly suggest taking this class in person and with a better instructor.
Dr. Thomson goes above and beyond for her students. Very organized online class, holds extra review sessions before tests, and will meet with you anytime you ask. Awesome teacher.
Dr. Thomson made A&P so much easier to comprehend. Everyone talks about how difficult this course is, but the way she laid out the information really made it more manageable. She provided a ton of study material and motivated us to share helpful outside materials with each other. I took her for both A&P 1 and 2 and loved it!
I took Dr. Thomson for BIO-141 and loved that I was able to take her again. Amazing course materials and layout. This course requires a lot of study time, but Dr. Thomson provides tons of extra study material to make it easier.
If youre ready to not only memorize the anatomical structures but know how to SPELL these 13 letter words correctly or else you get the whole question wrong regardless of knowing the structure. Take this. The tests are nothing like the study guide, neither are the quizzes. I know many professors thatll make you love this class, this isnt one.
I was nervous to take this course online but I'm so glad I did. She is a great professor with very clear expectations and due dates. The course modules are awesome and you don't need to buy a textbook. She even drops your lowest exam grade for a final grade boost. I'd highly recommend her online classes.
If you have to take A&P 2, TAKE IT WITH PROF THOMSON! Each week (Sunday's) there are two quizzes due by 12am. The questions are EASY. Straight from the reading, or you can google it honestly. There are 4 exams, not cumulative. Tests are straight from quizzes. MEMORIZE THE QUIZZES! Seriously, you can take em as many times as you want to get a 100!
Really nice professor that is willing to explain anything to you. She has the best pre-test study guides. There is no extra credit, but that is a college-wide thing. The course is organized well and the textbook only gives the essentials. If you study hard like she mentions in the beginning you will have no problem passing the class.
She is a fine professor, but one thing that really put me off was the fact that she didnt seem to care about my personal situation. I lost a loved one and I had to do exams late because of it, and instead of sending her condolences like my other professors, she simply told me abt the consequences of doing my exams late.
I took the 5week class. Exams are nothing like the study guide or exam summary which pretty much says -know everything in the 2-3 chapters you read a week. The hw lab pictures are nothing like the lab exam pictures & pictures that werent on the hw (but were on the exams) you had to know from her quizlet. I studied 6-8hrs a day and STILL struggled.
tough grader
tough grader, too much to memorize
The test arent like the study guides and there is a lot to memorize.
This class was hard. 2 quizzes do every Sunday and not too many assignments. Practice quizzes are pretty simple but the tests don't look anything like them. She doesn't give ANY feedback for exams whatsoever. She doesn't tell you what to study for exams you just have to know everything! I've maintained a B all semester and I had to work for it.
The expectations of learning are high considering the class being virtual. Weekly quizzes that are pretty much the only hope to pull your grade up because the tests are so difficult. The assignments are not worth enough to impact the grade when compared to the weight of the tests. No feedback is given on tests and info included on them is so broad
Word of advice: never choose her! Choose any other A&P instructor
2 quizzes weekly, discussion boards, activities. Tests are not the same as study guide material. No explanation or review, answers are just wrong with no information. Lab pics look nothing like tests. Constant lock down browser critiques. Does not interact with her students AT ALL. Avoid at all costs. Misspelling a word will count it as wrong.
Do yourself a favor and choose anyone but her. Study all you want. Her tests will NOT be the same as your study material. Email her and you get abrupt and curt replies. Worst course professor I have had at this school.
Only graded unit exams, no class work or quizzes graded
The entire class was based on the exams and not the assignments. The exams didn't make sense, and the fill in the blank questions gave me an aneurysm. Even though the class was asynchronous we were still required to either go to the Fxbg testing center, or pay 50 dollars to take the exam at home, which defeats the purpose of asynchronous classes.
Good class, good information, organized lessons, very hard exams, hard to study for exams, overall good class just difficult and a lot of information.
Took her on-line class and found her material very well organized. There's several assignment for each module to complete per week. If you complete all your assignments on time you can do well in her class. Watch the due dates! Negative rating for being required to take exams in person or pay. The grade you received, is the grade you earned.
INTENSE COURSE. Took the 7 week course, 12+ page study guides due every 3 days. LOT'S of memorizing. Exams are worth 60% of your grade and are extremely hard and don't match the study guides. You'll need to get 100% on quizzes and small assignments and at least a 50% on exams to at least get a D. No final exam, only chapter exam to end the class.
Exams are proctored! Very hard course.
Dr. Thompson is a very test heavy teacher. This would be ok if the tests matched the study guides. I would not recommend this class. I did learn a lot but it was very stressful and almost not worth it.
Study!
This class involves a lot of reading and memorization. The tests are very hard and do not match the study guide. You will see different terms and material on the test that wasn't even covered in the course material.
Extremely tough grader. Proctored tests where you are you are required to memorize over 150 different terms (and be able to know how to fully spell them, no word bank or multiple choice) for tests that are 60% of grade + can't backtrack on. Study guides do not look like tests, professor was very nice but feels like the tests are designed to fail.
This professor does not give you opportunites for success. Her only form of sudy material is her study guides and they don't relate to anything on the exam. Most of her exams are fill in the blank or written questions. If you do take this class with this professor beware you will not get good grades on her exam if you don't write things out.
Loved her! She was the best professor I had at GCC. If you work hard and do the assignments, it's easy to pass the exams. She doesn't give a lot of extra credit, though. The study guides go along with the exams perfectly and they are very helpful when preparing for exams!
Don't take her class. She is one of the head personnel of the science department. She doesn't care about grading or helping you. Trust me I tried. When asking for help she disregarded me and told me a C is okay in the class. When asking for help, she said that memorization for this class is not a priority but learning the material is.
I loved this class and learned so much! I took the 7 week course and it was hard, but the class is well organized and easy to follow. I was in her office hours alot for help and she is so nice and helpful! She has lots of material to study and if you know the study guides, you'll do good on the exams. Her exam review sessions were great too!
I finally passed!!!!!!!! This is the third time I've taken the class and I almost gave up. I took Dr. Thomson's 7 week A&P-I and I feel like I finally learned something. She was always available to help and taught me how to study for the class. Follow the study guides and attend the review sessions if you want an A. And be prepared to work!
I just finished my BIO 141 class with Prof Thomson and I am so grateful for her! I struggled a lot because it was a really short course, but it's the only way I could take it.I definitly don't recommend taking it that quick if you don't have to, but she was always ready to help and even reached out to me when she saw I was having trouble. Take her!
So much work with little information.
I've taken BIO 141 and 142 with her and I'm glad I did. She was always available to help in office hours and definitely knows A&P! The tests weren't too hard as long as you do the rest of the work and she gives plenty of extra credit. I just found out I got into nursing school and I feel ready!
I wanted to take Dr. Thomson for BIO 141 because I heard great things about her, but I didn't sign up in time and I had to take a different teacher. I'm a little mad about that now because that other teacher's class wasn't as good or organized as Dr. Thomson's is. Her lessons are helpful and the study guides are exactly what's on the test.
I took her for both BIO 141 and 142 in the 7 week class form so it was a LOT of work but she was a great professor. She is super helpful and responsive and wants you to succeed. As long as you do the work, make time to study, and attend any review lectures you'll be fine.
