Do not take the class with him. He is awful at actually teaching the material in a comprehensible way- basically copy pastes very dense chunks of information(straight from the textbook) that are going to be extremely hard to decipher.
Sebastiaan does not take the time to make sure any students are actually learning the material and uses slides that are straight from the textbook. He knows what he is talking about but could not explain it for the life of him. The homework and examples he gives are nothing like the tests and even the TAs for this class knows you will struggle.
Joosten seems like a decent and intelligent guy, but the class is simply awful. You learn essentially nothing from his lectures and will have no idea how to do any of the homework afterwards. His 2011 makes me miss Calc 2 and physics.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. Basically just uses everything from the book with no original material with the possible exception of the exams. Everything is fast-paced with no in-depth explanation. He blasts through the examples without checking if the class even understands what is going on. Also, tests are 75% of the grade!
Tests are worth 75 percent and he "teaches" you by showing parts of the textbook and racing through it all. Everyone in the class is extremely lost and he went the whole semester ignoring raised hands and continued to keep rapidly going through examples. Would prefer to teach myself and just read the textbooks since that's all he teaches. dont take
Awful at teaching, awful course structure, and words questions on exams in an extremely confusing way. Avoid at all costs.
Professor Joosten seems to think that since he understands the concepts he's teaching, they have to be easy to understand and he won't have to spend much time explaining them at all. His lectures go at light speed brushing over essential topics that he won't bother to explain, then assigns homework every lecture so that you have to teach yourself.
The lectures in this class are comically bad. Every class he copies and pastes huge chunks of information/proofs from the book that nobody in the class will be able to follow and absolutely not be able to understand. As an added bonus, the class moves at an extreme pace with homework after each lecture (which you probably won't be able to do).
Joosten puts walls of text copy and pasted from the book on the slides and then goes through them at light speed. he assigns homework after every lecture that I have to teach my self because he cant teach. It's clear that he's a smart man but he is the worst teacher I have ever had.
This class is nothing short of torture. Homework assigned after lecture basically amounts to flopping around for hours at a time, because you will know next to nothing useful about the material after Joostens lectures. Some problems are many many steps, and Joosten demonstrates none of it.
Complete incompetence as an instructor. You will have to teach yourself EVERYTHING. The lectures are so useless.
Great guy, you guys are all over reacting. Tests are only 75% of the grade.
Jootsten you seem like a decent bloke but man is your class awful. First off your lectures are almost entirely pointless. It seems as if he takes the exact words from the textbook and puts in a slideshow and calls it a day. Secondly the lad has the audacity to make tests 75% of our grade even though he teaches niche in class. Not a proper lad!!!!
The lectures are dry and not very helpful, which means you'll be doing a bit of reading outside of class. However, the course material isn't entirely difficult, and the practice exam looked nearly identical to the first midterm. Beware of a lack of a curve on exams.
awful class. Joosten is against curves for silly reasons. He also has no conception of how to actually TEACH.
Professor Joosten does not know how to teach. He also said does not believe in curves for dumb reasons. DO NOT take 2011 with him.
Joosten really does have no redeeming qualities as a teacher. He cannot teach- lectures are so bad its laughable. These terrible lectures lead homeworks to be very difficult and exams the same. A possible solution to counteract his own incompetence in teaching would be to curve, but Joosten refuses to do this.
Please save yourself and do not take 2011 or any class with him.
At this point, if your only option for this class is to take with Joosten, do not take the class. Just wait for another semester. It is seriously not worth the pain and GPA hit that you would inevitably get by taking this class with him. He is terrible at teaching the concepts and will not curve. You will give maximal effort and still get a C.
While obviously an amazing computer scientist and mathematician, Professor Joosten is simply out of touch with mere mortal students, and what should be an enjoyable relatively straightforward course has become the bane of the existence of many prospective programmers' technical GPAs. Shrugs off D+ midterm class average with no curve offered.
Ruined my semester. He doesn't teach, he screenshots the textbook and reads it to us, never going through hw problems or potential test questions and showing us how he assesses us. Thus lecture is useless. I have taught myself everything through Youtube. Grading is inconsistent across the TA's. This class should NOT be as hard as he has made it.
It is obvious that he is passionate in his field of study, but passion does not a good professor make. Not only are his slides often verbatim to the textbook, but he breezes past them at a pace that is just unreasonable. His reasoning to exclude a curve is just unrealistic and it's exclusion is more of a detriment than anything else.
Genuinely the worst teacher I've ever had. He also refuses to curve and has very ambitious expectations for problems you are expected to complete. Just avoid taking him at all costs.
I have never once understood what this man is trying to explain. He seems like a great guy and is very smart but he does not know how to teach. At all. The subject matter could be interesting but he makes it so confusing it's terrible. Don't take this class with him.
It shows that he's a very passionate guy about his field but his teaching methods made me want to pull my hair out.
Sebastiaan is a great guy and all, but this guy can not teach. Luckily this course is not too difficult so I am able to get by, however, I spend lots of time reading the book since I do not understand anything he teaches in this class. Please save yourself the pain and do not take any courses with him teaching. I hope he gets fired.
It really is unfortunate that Joosten is so bad at teaching, because he does seem to be a decent guy. You will likely be able to follow the first two lecture slides, and then after that he will completely lose you. The homework is basically impossible to do on your own. It's amazing how you can be more confused after lecture than you were before.
Sebastiaan Joosten can make addition seem complicated. He finds the simplest concepts such as BigO Notation and explains them using the most complex definitions without explaining examples or what it actually means. Avoid him at all costs and I pray for this man to get fired. He is a great man but he should stick to research not teaching.
Just not a good teacher
Good luck with this one. He clicks through his slides and expects you to just know the material.
The only way to understand the material is by having a good TA
Sebastiaan makes his course demoralizing. He sets the bar so high and never checks to see if maybe he's moving too quickly or if he should provide more examples to solidify learning. By the time you think you begin to have a basic grasp of any one topic, you'll be whisked away to another. Even the most passionate CS students will suffer.
The guy simply cannot teach. Take the class with anyone else. The entirety of your grade is based on exams for which you will be ill prepared, and then to make it even better, Joosten is against curves!
this man can not teach. good luck!
The class with Joosten is simply miserable. I really cannot advise anyone else hard enough to STAY AWAY.
The average score on the first exam was 69%. This exam was worth 25% of the total grade and there was no curve because the professor "does not believe in curves".
If you don't have to, don't.
Quite possibly the worst class/professor in the Computer Science department, maybe even the school. He teaches as if he is speaking to robots who can remember infinite theorems in incomprehensible notations. There is no instruction on problem solving, nor do most of the TA's provide good insight on this.
If you happen to be a mathematics major taking this CSCI course, I'm sure you will be fine, if not good luck. Sebastiaan is too smart to teach this class. He makes everything much more complicated than it has to be, and teaches a lot outside of the typical discrete math curriculum. If it were up to me, he should just go back to Dartmouth.
Although his teaching style may be hard for some students to learn from, professor Joosten is incredibly smart, knowledgeable in his field, and genuinely cares about his students. His class can be difficult if you are not passionate about math like he is, but personally, I have found his lectures to be very interesting.
Seeing all the hate towards Prof. Joosten makes me feel so bad for him because I feel like he genuinely cares ab his students and tries to cater his lectures towards the students requests. He is super smart but over complicates some topics, which can easily be solved by reading the textbook. The actual material of the class isnt hard at all.
I have seen a lot of hate for this guy, but he's smart. I think that his only problem is his lecture style and communication (cuz he's Dutch). However, if you study properly, you should be good with him and learn a lot by the end of the semester. Good luck!
Sebastiaan is not a bad professor, people are just wayyy too soft. Discrete mathematics as a whole is a tough class to teach and is very theory based so your textbook and Youtube will likely be your best friend in this class. As a whole, Sebastiaan is a compassionate guy and although his lectures are dry, the practice tests are a godsend for tests.
Shoutout to the people who asked him if they should drop the course. The curve simply saved my grade
Solid but unspectacular professor. Low reviews are people having their first encounter with a difficult course and thinking they can do fine without attending lectures. Getting an A is difficult, but passing is not.
He's an awesome lecturer. I love him! Good job!
He has improved a lot and have become one of my favorite professors.
The first half of the course was a disaster. Dense, long lectures and difficult exams, and discussion sections were ill-equipped for the confusion. But Sebastiaan took input, introducing a study guide for the 2nd exam and curving it due to its difficulty. He's a cool guy, and I think his classes will improve. Still, I've stopped attending lecture.
Honestly does not deserve a rating so low. His lectures might not be so great at the beginning of the semester, but takes advice and gives really good lectures at the end. Very very kind professor and even offers me a research opportunity as a freshman student. Difficult class, but most generous curve I've ever seen. 12h a week guarantees an A.
Professor Joosten is a nice guy. However, the majority of the class including myself taught ourselves the material through a youtube playlist from a different professor at another school. His lectures were useless but his tests weren't unpredictable. His tests were almost identical to the practice exams he gave. However, the material is difficult.
Professor Joosten is definitely an interesting professor who knows a lot about Discrete Mathematics. However, I believe that his teaching style could use a bit of refining. I believe that he needs to truly slow down on important subjects and thoroughly explain the topics, explaining his thinking elaborately and at a basic understandable level.
Does not deserve such a low score. His lecturing is not the best, but he genuinely takes student feedback and does his best to improve. After our last exam, he decided to curve the class after he got feedback that the exam was difficult. Also changed the grading so that your best exam is weighted 40%. Very kind and cares about his students.
Look at the reviews notice how unserious they are. Negative review stem frm alot things but common factor is anger. Lectures not good but caring professor. Takes feedback & improves. Practice exam identical to real one. Created study guide becuz 1 student asked. Then asked feedback on study guide. changed grading after each exam. He is different!
lectures r a waste of time. Seems like a nice guy I guess but grade just weighs too heavily on exams. he does take criticism very well though n has changed the grading scale after ppl fumbled on the first midterm. if ur not a great test-taker avoid for your own sanity.
He is getting better at teaching pretty fast. Could use a fun lecturer to sit in and teach him to skip doing the extra things that are fun for him but has 99% of students eyes glaze over. Would only give definitions once in lecture.
Prof Joosten does not deserve this low of a rating. Looking at other students write-ups they look more out of anger. He states clearly was is on the exam more than any professor I have ever had before. He also releases all notes via canvas so these people complaining truly aren't working hard enough. Taking him again for another class.
Sebastiaan has put more work into the students taking his class than any other professor that I have taken. His willingness to change is inspirational. He listens to students a molds his class to see what is fair. I understand that the first month and a half with him was rough. But the past month with him has truly been game-changing, I would rec.
Just terrible! Avoid this guy
Sebastiaan is one of the most caring Professors I've ever had at the U. He takes student feedback and adjust the course to help his student, he truly does not want to see you fail. In terms of the course, I feel that in the future he will adjust it (as its his first time teaching it at the U) and he will be one of the best professors to have.
I think his score is not fair, he always replied to my emails and questions I have, the practice exams were almost identical to the real exams. since its the first time he teaches this course, the beggining of the semester was kinda hard but he took feedback and made this course really enjoyable. poeple who gave him 1/5 are just angry
In this class all he does is read off of the slides that on 10 feet above him. IF you need to take him, just dont even bother going to lecture.Just watch youtube videos, go to weekly discussion, do all homework. do the 2 TH exams (similar 2 midterm) and you will be able to pass atleast with a C. LECTURES from him are a waste of time.
Hes nice though but not worth the stress. He just finds someone else's slides and reads them I think because there is always mistakes on slides and he just says oops. He confuses me more than I need to be. I had to just watch random people on Youtube and Khan Aca. AVOID if you can.
Lectures are confusing, but he is very forgiving and really wants his students to do well. The tests are almost identical to the practice tests which helps with studying, and when we all failed a test he took responsibility and added a curve to the class. He provides lecture videos but it may be more helpful to use the textbook and slides.
Sebastiaan Joosten used to use the lecture slides from the textbook and they weren't very good. However, he's switched over to writing his own slides and the lectures are a lot better than they were at the start of the semester. Most of the bad reviews are from people who didn't like the textbook slides. This professor has improved significantly!!!
Professor Joosten's lectures used to be terrible. However, he's great at listening to feedback and he's improved a ton! His teaching is a lot better now, and it makes me sad that his rating hasn't followed...
Caring professor, the beginning was not too good but takes feedback.
just don't do it. every good review says something along the lines of he used to suck but got better/cares blah blah. why would you want a mid professor who doesn't know how to teach over the other amazing profs here? take someone else, actually ENJOY your classes, save your GPA. trust me.
This guy has ruined my summa cum laude gpa. Plz don't take him! He's is terrible in teaching.
Joosten does not deserve such a low rating. He was very approachable after class and always made sure to clarify my doubts. In addition to that, he is great at listening to feedback--he made a comprehensive study guide and published it to the whole class after just one student's request. One criticism that I have is that the hwks are too long.
Professor Joosten had a rough start and everyone thought he was the worst teacher in the world. However, he's extremely good at learning from feedback and his teaching was significantly better by the end of the semester. I feel bad for him because his rating is ruined forever by a bunch of people who overreacted in the first few weeks of class...
Trust me, it won't get worse than this semester. He has improved a lot, and he will continue to improve even more, ask me why? Because he is someone that takes feedback seriously, and in my experiences professors that take feedback seriously tend to be really good professors. So, don't let his rating fool you.
The first third of the semester was rough. However, it was Sebastiaan's first semester at the U. He took all of the feedback from students, adjusted his lectures, and changed the grading scale to accommodate the rough start. Since the first midterm, Joosten has become one of my favorite professors at the U.
This course was a rollercoaster. Sebastiaan's lectures are very rough, but he's a nice guy and is willing to implement student feedback. The HW is tough, but they're graded on completion. The midterms and the final are similar to the practice versions. Also, he had to curve the class so that 60% or higher was passing and changed the exam weights.
While the first third of the semester was rough, Sebastiaan was able to make significant changes due to student feedback surrounding the course. As long as you put in a reasonable amount of effort into the class, you will be able to succeed in the course. He is very responsive to feedback, and questions in and outside of class. Would Recommend!
The lectures for this class were not helpful at all in the beginning of the term, and after the first two tests had subpar grades--a curve, grade weight, and change up his lecture style were implemented, which helped. The discussion sections for this class were also far more helpful than lectures. Overall a nice guy, just not the best lecturer.
I respect Sebastiaan because he asked us frequently for feedback, and he implemented it throughout the semester. His teaching improved MASSIVELY from the first test to the last one. Sometimes it is hard to follow his train of thought when he explains something, but his lectures are enjoyable to be in and the class isn't too bad in terms of content.
He maybe not a great professor, but a good man. TA also very helpful. I will go for 2041 with him next semster, hope that will be good.
Very mid. Honestly try to take someone else if you can. Lectures are super boring and useless, YouTube will teach you more.
The beginning was really rough but he clutched up with a curve. He said he doesn't want to ever have to curve again so that would probably mean the class will be restructured to be easier in the future.
The class is a lot of work but doable, textbook is helpful. Just turn in your home work and study the study guide he gives you before the tests. He is a really nice professor and gave the vibe that he actually cared about his students doing well. He answers emails quick too
The lectures got *much* better towards the end. He cares about his students and isn't trying to tank your grade. Pay special attention to the practice exams as the real ones are very very similar.
Sebastiaan has significantly stepped up his game and redone his classes. A lot of the ratings that are heavily negative are from his first time teaching, and he has greatly improved since that time. A seriously smart guy that you should consider as your prof if you can deal with average diffuculty.
He always tries to do his best and learn from student feedback. I know that if I don't like something about Sebastiaan's teaching, I can just tell him and he will do his best to help me. It seems like a rare and useful quality for professors.
One of the best professors I have taken so far at the University of Minnesota.
Everyone at the U of MN agrees that Sebastiaan Joosten is a good professor and that you can't really trust anything that RateMyProfessor says about him...
I have taken both 2011 and 2041 with Sebastiaan and enjoyed them both and learned a lot. He is very responsive to feedback and is good at interacting with students. Assignments aren't stressful in any way, they are typically just practice, which allows me to learn quicker. And the tests are usually very similar to take home exam. Highly recommend.
Sebastiaan Joosten is very helpful and responsive to feedback. People like to hate on him because he isn't great at lecturing, but he started using video lectures, which completely solved the problem. He also made lectures a bit more casual, which makes it easy to ask questions or speak up if you're struggling with anything. Great professor!!
First he is a great guy, but please do not take him. He has unclear direction on many of the homeworks that even TA's could not explain to me. His lectures are useless compared to the discussion sections. Even for a discrete course the questions are extremeley difficult. Only really good thing is the practice exam is similar to the exam.
He is a nice guy, but very disorganized. Get ready to spend a lot of time outside the class with TAs. I found lectures not helpful at all for homework and midterms. Homeworks: not returned in a timely manner, no solutions posted which made it hard to prepare for the midterm Midterms: 50 minutes, not enough space, too many questions No extra credit.
I would strongly urge you to avoid this professor. The lectures are boring and unorganized, the exams are difficult and have no correlation to the course content, and the average exam score is always around 20/30. Do yourself a favor and not take this professor's 2041 to save your gpa.
Pretty bad. Second time having him. Lectures are a messy and the final project was unbelievably confusing. TA's didn't even know what to do.
Sebastiaan is one of the most interesting professors I have had at the U. His 2041 course has been far better than 2011 but there are still issues. His transition to online book lectures was really good, but his labs are confusing, especially the final project. Sebastiaan is always willing to adapt, so if you do have him, please voice any concerns.
I had Joosten for 2011, and using (short) video lectures as an aid really helped his weakest points. Dedicating class to answering questions and doing examples was great when starting new units. The final project was chaos at first, but it worked out well in the end. Sebastiaan definitely puts his heart into class, and loves to help you.
Class was great up until the final project, the transition from smaller homework to a final project was really confusing, but he listened to students and graded leniently. The exams were not too bad, just study the review guide. Labs and office hours are super helpful, Sebastiaan is a really nice guy that actually cares and is receptive to feedback
I found the class to be very interesting. The discussion sections helped clear up anything that we found confusing during lectures. I always felt well prepared for the tests and I really liked the way his class was set up.
Just please don't take him for the sake of your mental health. CSCI 2041 is meant to be the easiest class in computer science and he makes it the hardest class ever with every homework as big as full projects. And he doesn't know how to teach at all (thinks everyone knows everything).
This professor has made what should've been one of more easier classes in the major, into a massive struggle just to pass the WEEKLY HW's, much less the exams. His lectures are VERY unclear, and the TAs can barely keep up as well. I was unfortunately forced to take him since he was the only one teaching. Don't take him if you have the option to.
Although I went to lectures every single time (graded attendance), I found that I learned basically nothing at all from them. The entirety of my learning came from the textbook and being in office hours. A lot of the time I found myself completely lost during the lecture. Somehow I managed to do well enough on the exams.
The lectures were sometimes hard to follow, but he very clearly explains projects, and what will be on the exams.
While the start of the semester was rough, He put a great deal of effort into improving the quality of course lectures and accommodating for the initial course issues as the course went on. By the end of the semester, the course was very well taught.
Joosten is a nice guy, lectures are basically useless even though they are required for a grade. Along with this the homeworks and final project have very little information. He basically tells you to do something while giving you 0 starting point and not even explaining how you would even think about starting.
For many of us new to functional programming, it's hard to follow him when he doesn't start explaining from the most primary building blocks, refuses to go through code in greater detail, and expresses his thoughts in a confusing way. His homework are often too hard/vague for the amount of time, esp the final project that even TAs dont quite get.
Terrible! Never take him! He does not know how to explain any concepts, and expects you to know everything. The final project for his class is way too hard for a 2000 level class.
From the beginning of the semester, it is only getting worse. Homework becomes more challenging and confusing. The final project is a complete mess. One and only one thing this class will give you is a depression.
Not very good at explaining concepts at all. I feel like he expects his students to get exactly what he is talking about right away even though he explains things so abstractly. His write ups for homeworks/projects/labs are always confusing. Usually takes a few read overs to even understand what the objective is. Lectures are confusing/boring.
I do not think he is a good explainer, and also not good at connecting with and helping students. The first part of the course you can get through if you pay attention to the textbook since lectures are useless for that part, and it is fairly easy. For the final project, there is really not any resources. It is very difficult. Would not recommend.
Whatever you do, avoid this professor at all costs. He has no clue how to teach and just goes through topics at breakneck speed. Also, the final project is nearly impossible to do because the TAs have no clue what is going on, and the professor doesn't know how to explain anything at all. For your mental health, please take another professor.
The final project is the downfall of this class. I understand why it is important and good material to teach but the write up and helpful information is buried in slides and it makes the whole class feel lost. If there was a pdf writeup of what we were expected to do and the different progress points, the project would be drastically better.
The professor was okay until the final project was released to work on. There has been little to no guidance on a project that is significantly different from the rest of the content in the course. The explanations, when there are any, tend to not help in understanding of what is supposed to be done for the project.
This class was okay until the final project began and has since become the worst class experience I have ever had. The information is incredibly messy and disorganized. Even emailing the professor has been in vain, as it seems he doesn't entirely know what is going on either.
Goes through concepts at lightning speed, TA's are clueless, professor was understanding however. This should be a graduate-level course. Everything derailed right about now when we had to do the final project. I wish we were given documentation for the final project or it was explained better. We were thrown into the sea with no swimming skills.
The best thing you can do in this class is not to take it altogether (if he's teaching). Its structure hinders TA's from providing assistance, and the project is overly complex for a 2xxx-level course. Seeking help from the professor adds to the confusion. The best part is this wasn't an issue in past 2041 courses, so dodge this bullet of a class.
While Sebastiaan is a nice guy one on one, the final project has been impossible to understand and is making many people fail and drop out of the course. I personally have gotten all As in my undergraduate career, and in this class I anticipate getting a C. If your grade, understanding, and mental health are important to you: AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
its whatevr u hv read from other comments, excpt worst for this sem. 1 final proj=20% final grade which only the grad TA knows n other TA not know how to do. caused an uprising within the class hw, labs n midterms r doable tho if you really want to take his class, gamble with your life and mental health that he will not give the final proj this sem
Avoid this professor at all costs, especially if you value your grades and your mental health. He's nice but he's made one of the easiest courses in CS so hard, and it's so unfair knowing no one else has dealt with this. He's made a final project that's 5000-level coursework 20% of our grade, and has barely provided any guidance and time to do it.
His teaching style must change if he is to continue. Still dont understand how the university has done nothing after the initial wave of negative reviews of his. He is confusing, does not have a relatable, standard sense of communication, meaning he is just plain wrong with any of his convictions about a course. Needs to be fired!
really sweet and intelligent professor, however, makes 2041 course like a 5xxx/8xxx course. Homeworks are tough in exchange for "easier" midterms. Final project is insanely difficult & complexed for 2xxx course, will find yourself spend more time in this lower-level course than higher-level. Academically challenging, rough course structure.
absolutely awful, the projects are unbearable and make you want to question all of your life choices. the grading is unreasonbale and not clear, the homeworks are doable but way to complicated. if you're going to take this buy gallons of lube.
A terrible professor that just wants to sabotage your semester. There isn't much else to add here, since everyone else has said what I'd already say. Unless you're into hurting yourself, do me a favor and steer clear if you see "Joosten" as the professor for any class you want to take. I bet he'd even make a deadly project for a gym class.
Joosten is very kind and is a very intelligent professor. That being said his class is VERY difficult. The final project (which other sections do not have) is one extremely poorly setup, two way beyond the scope of a lower division course, three most TA's don't know how to help with the project.
His lectures are boring and unclear. HW and final project follow this theme as well. The Final Project doesn't have any structure. The writeup for the final project is scattered between 20 canvas pages and the TAs don't understand it thus getting help is impossible. Avoid him if you would like to keep your sanity and pass with a good grade.
Joosten knows the material well, but isn't great at explaining it. At first the course was manageable and even enjoyable. But the final project is way too advanced for the fundamentals we learned regarding it. Feels like trying to build a house with ten sticks and a rock. He's at least sympathetic and has been giving out as much help as possible.
He's great, clearly cares a lot about his students and it shows. Very flexible with his course and the final project, while difficult, was made much more accessible through the assistance he provided. Midterms were easy. My only critique is that his lectures can be slide-heavy, but he provides lots of opportunities to ask questions.
Professor Joosten is very nice, however, his teaching style is one that I had a hard time understanding. His lectures were required and could be confusing at times. He does go out of his way to try and help his students which I was very grateful for. Overall, he is a very kind, helpful professor, but his teaching style could be ambiguous.
Accommodated student's concerns, dropped final project, midterms similar to mock midterms, caring, kind, answer emails quickly, overall very sweet professor. Weekly homework are more difficult/challenging side, attendance mandatory, weekly check-off labs, free online textbooks. Lecture slides are provided along with clear lectures.
for this sem, its still the same with whatever comments ur reading; except that this time, he decided to give a 20% final proj with unclear instructions and that none of the TA knew how to solve. his slides r bad for 2041. its just codes without much explanation. for the exams, idk what im doing. i just memorized the ans of the mock paper he gave
He's a nice guy and accommodating to students. He's open to feedback, but 2041 was needlessly hard. Lectures weren't the best. The homework is doable, but they're harder than the easy midterms. The final project was confusing and difficult for everyone, including Joosten himself and the TAs. He ended up cancelling it to lessen everyone's stress.
He's not as bad as people say overall. He is AWFUL at lecturing, and I've never seen such unclear instructions for homeworks and labs. But he's a nice guy who is accommodating.
He is not well prepared for the amount of workload that he is giving to students. The class is fast-paced compared to other 2041 classes and homework-heavy. The final project was a mess. The TAs couldn't help with it and he wasn't uploading the instructions on time. He had to drop the final 20% of our grade because of all the complaints.
Honestly, he is the most transparent instructor I've ever had. Fall 2023 was just tough for him and I'm happy that he took accountability and cancelled the project. I agree that he wasn't the best lecturer which I discovered after I stopped reading the textbook, but he was always there to help. HW and labs could be long, but midterms were easy.
I Don't Like by Chief Keef
Pros: midterms are incredibly similar to the mock midterms, final project was made optional bc it was so chaotic and not even TAs knew how to approach it. He's nice and accommodating to student feedback (especially when a majority of the students voice their struggles) Cons: Fast-paced lectures, reads off of slides, homework can ask a lot from you
This guy will suck the joy you have left for computer science. His lectures make you think you're having a stroke because that's how bad they are. The homework assignments were difficult, but the midterms were not that bad. Overall, if you can avoid this class, do so for your own mental health.
Note: A lot of complaints here are based nearly entirely on grade anxiety over one project that he ended up making optional. Realistically, he's a nice guy. Lectures could have used "easier" examples; a lot of things would not have been an issue if he gave clearer examples that started from an easier place before going into more complex examples.
Accommodating, accessible, knowledgeable, great lecturer. Easy to get an A if attending lectures, asking questions, and doing mock midterms - exams were exactly the same as the mock midterms if not easier. One of the best professors I've had at UMN
worst professor i EVER had! he talks a lot during lecture but say nothing useful. i learned everything in this class on my own, final project has little to no instructions. he blamed it on him having a things going on in his personal life(which is fair)but doesn't excuse the fact that he wasted everyones time. 92.99 and refused to curve to 93 bsffr
severely overhated professor. the midterms are almost identical to the mock midterms, the homework is fairly reasonable if you show up to office hours, and the lectures and course structure almost guarantee that you'll understand a majority of the content if you show up to every lecture and every discussion.
I think Joosten is a good professor. He had clear grading criteria and at least for his 2011 class, his lectures were helpful. Look at the mock midterms because they're almost identical to the midterms. There is also a chance for homework makeups at the end of the semester. Overall, a very passable, well-set-up class.
Really nice guy, but slides were sometimes hard to follow (I learn best reviewing content after lecture at my own pace) and I couldn't understand the wording, and examples weren't similar enough to the HW. He does however give lots of opportunities to retake which I appreciate (including midterms and hw). Many TAs available, take advantage of that.
Sebastiaan is a dedicated teacher whose methods initially challenged me. Despite a tough start, his genuine concern for students and passion for the subject won me over. Success in his demanding class requires active participation in office hours.
Great professor who cares about his students, weekly hw, three midterms, and optional final.
2011 was a very difficult class for me. Make sure to read the textbook material before lectures, otherwise I found them useless. Joosten is alright, helpful if you ask questions otherwise not in-depth enough. The discussion sections were extremely useful, attend them all.
Definitely cares a lot about his students, but make sure you ask questions often during lectures as if you don't ask, his lectures won't teach much, but he's very good at answering most questions in a helpful way. discussions sections are exceedingly useful. be ontop of homework, as each question right correlates to 1% of your grade, this adds up.
Professor Sebastiaan has his flaws, but he tries to be accommodating. The lectures can be dry, but the exams are fair if you put in the work. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for prepping.
Maybe it was stress, and I know being a new professor is not easy, but Joosten was bad. He was a bad lecturer but I went to every class anyway and asked questions, that is until the first exam. Pretty much everyone did poorly and the next lecture he blamed the students for it. Never went to a lecture after that and did better on subsequent exams.
He was ok. Knew the material but the class structure was confusing and he wasn't great at actually teaching the material. Tests were all over the place - the first was easy, second was impossible if I remember correctly, and third was a mixture. The final was just the midterms combined, so I was able to do well on that (also optional).
Very knowledgeable but not a very good teacher. Grading was easy because the final was 3 parts that would replace your 3 midterm scores if you scored higher on the final.
