Sehoya was awesome!
Good teacher, and any teacher that plays Simpsons clips is A-OK by me
She is pretty tough. She made class a little interesting but i didnt like her that much. She was okay overall
Her tests were very difficult. Overall, she tried to make the topics interesting.
she great
Her lectures got monotonous at times, but I think it was mainly the subject matter.
Great lady, keeps you interested, very witty
very stupid class, easiest ever.
Since this is pretty much a required course for everyone at the U, it is kind of dumbed down (especially the labs). But if you have to take it, Sehoya Cotner is an excellent choice.
She is by far the hardest biology teacher in the section. Her tests are ridiculously hard and technical. Who cares if she is nice and good at teaching when the average score on each of her tests is a d-. Do not take lecture with this lady unless you want impossible tests.
Anyone who thinks the tests were hard, didn't pay attention in class. The material is there, all you have to do is pay attention and take notes, if you're not going on in bio, DON'T buy the books, buy just the lab manual. Cotner will tell you everything you need to know for the tests.
Sehoya is wonderfully interesting but the test hurt so bad I had to drop the class. If you can memorize minute details you will do great if not might have to choose another class. Don't buy the books!

Great teacher! She is very approachable, funny, and one of the best professors i have had. She is very thorough with her methods and will spend extra time on concepts that students have trouble with. She makes information very straight foward and lets students print off the exact notes she gives in class.
The best professor I've had at the U so far. Very funny lecturer and tries her best to make the subject interesting for all. None of the biology 1001 courses are easy but her tests were reasonable if you studied her lecture notes.
Great prof... I recommend taking any of the classes she teaches. If you review lecture notes you should do well on the exams.
She's witty, she's quirky, she's fun, and she knows her stuff! She is energetic and enthusiastic, and it just rubs off on you. I recommend her classes very highly!
She was such a fun and enthusiastic professor. Her tests are a little difficult, but as long as you do well in lab you will be set for a good grade.
Fun, querky professor. Class is a breeze-don't even buy the book. Tests go almost entirely by lecture. She got a little disorganized by the end of the semester, so be sure to take good notes.
Very nice professor. She is a good teacher and the class isn't too tough.
Her class was pretty dang-tootin' easy, and she is quite enthusiastic about her lecturing. On the down side, the in-class exercises tend to be a bit childish and not very instructive. At least she doesn't stand there throwning big words in your face like Mark Decker...
Hands down the best prof I have had at the U! She is awesome! very clear and makes sure that here teaching meets everyones needs.
Sehoya was very keen on making the class interesting, however a lot of the assignments were simply mentioned instead of assigned making them difficult to complete. She is also a tough paper grader. Still a fun professor.
Great Prof! Lectures are interesting but she tends to go off on tangents. She focuses on very high level and abstract ideas, so if you are the type of person that likes nitty gritty details this class may not be for you. Also be prepared to see naked pictures of her kids at least five times over the course.
her way of teaching gives you the impression that it is super easy. but when it comes to exam, it is soooooooo damn hard!
The best professor I have had at the U and probably my favorite class! I would very highly reccomend this class. She makes it very interesting and fun!
She was a fabulous professor when it came to lecture, an "okay" professor when it came to talking to her one-on-one, and an absolutely horrible teacher when it came to tests. I studied my butt off and still didn't do remotely well on my exams. She's REALLY interesting and fun during lecture but intimidating when you talk to her outside of class.
Great professor. Very intelligent. Makes lecture fun. Helpful and enthusiastic. As far as professors go, she's not bad to look at either ;-)
Great professor, fun to have class with. But when it came to tests, hers are very difficulut!
One of the best instructors I have had at the University so far! I would highly reccomend this class to both bio and non bio majors. She makes the class very interesting and fun! she always has time for her students..good person
I took Biology 1001: Evolution and the Biology of Sex with Sehoya during her first semester teaching it. I loved the class and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to fulfill their bio requirement. Fun and enjoyable class, but do be prepared the tests are challenging.
Great seminar course with interesting topics. Sehoya is awesome and enthusiastic. Also very understanding.
Fun -- a bit too focused on class participation. It did not work at all in a lecture setting. Overall, great instructor.
Do not take this class unless you are a bio major. It is really hard for a 1000 level class. Sehoya would be a good jr. high teacher because she is really nice but doesn't teach anything. The quizes are impossible and too hard. The mandatory labs are also pointless because the TAs do not know a thing about bio.
Her lectures are interesting and she posts notes and "mini-lectures" online, which are very helpful. The tests are somewhat difficult, but if you keep up with the lectures and other stuff online, you should do fine. I didn't find the books to be all that helpful/important.
No problem falling asleep in this class; Sehoya's off the wall. I found this class to be difficult. There was too heavy a focus on participating in lecture and asking questions etc. This was a pain for a quiet person in a very large class. Having finished my degree now and looking back, I don't feel this course was necessary.
Cotner tests are insanely hard. It's not because of the material, but because she doesn't TEACH it. Class is basically her fielding questions from chatterboxes. You're expected to basically teach yourself everything you don't ask her. Every question on her tests are curveball questions where you have to pick the MOST right answer. AVOID, AVOID
Mark Decker came in and guest lectured her class. I was sad I didn't sign up for his class because hers is just terrible. I don't know where most of these positive reviews are coming from. Yeah, some of her lectures are funny, but they rarely stay on topic and you'll spend half the class listening to idiots ask random questions. Take Decker.
What is with the hateful comments? Dr. Cotner's sex class is the most interesting course I have taken in my collegiate career. It is for students who actually want to learn something and not be bombarded with pounds of useless information to memorize, regurgitate, and forget.
She was aweful...people that say she is good are only the students with an interest in devoting the majority of their time to bio (something that most are not...evident by thefirst exam average of a 'D'...) Do not take her
The average grade of a class of 192 people on the first test was a 67%. What more is there to say? If you care about your grade, don't take this class. If you want an 'interesting professor' and think a C in the class is ok, by all means, sign up!
Don't take this class if you're just trying to fulfill your biology class with lab requirement. This teacher does not treat the class like it's a 1001 level class and does not prepare students for her test. If you are interested in the topic (sex evolution), you might like the class, but this teacher is hard. I wish I took anthropology instead.
Enjoyable lecture, but was difficult to take worth-while notes on. IF-AT tests help a lot, but tests are hard. If you really enjoy sex and evolution topics, then definitely take this, not recommended as a first year bio class.
Sehoya is the kind of person I'd want as a mentor or an advisor, but NOT as a teacher. This is a topic class that strays much to far from a traditional biology format. If you are not sure that you will like biology, this class is not for you. It won't teach you anything. It will either confuse you or excite you about biology.
I enjoyed her class a lot. Her take on evolution was both fresh and interesting. Her tests were harder than any intro class I've taken but not so bad as to make me want to quit. Labs were disconnected from lecture. Here's the take home message; she's a decent teacher, great person, and I would be willing to take another one of her classes.
amazing professor who loves talking about sex and evolution. tests are hard, but lectures are fun and IFATs very helpful. I would definitely take another class with this professor
Worst class I've ever taken at the university.
The worst professor I have ever had. Her tests were irrelevant to class material and made you choose the "most right" answer. She was very unwilling to help and often even seemed unprepared for class. She would have in-class readings then realize they were irrelevant and it would be a grand waste of time. I WOULD NOT TAKE HER, she was horrible.
Sehoya is a great teacher, but not for someone who is not 100% interested/devoted to Biology. Her exams are generally harder than any other sections and for her class, there are a lot of extra readings to do. Her clas is very interactive, if you are someone who prefers traditional teaching methods, do not take this class.
Great professor, extremely hard tests. Very ambigous...
LOVED HER! She made me like science! She made it fun and funny. I did have a friend that struggled in the class, but I think it mostly depends on the student. She was a good teacher, but I think ultimately it's your ability to understand biology/evolution that will determine how easy this class is for you. And STUDY THE IFATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She brought up a lot of interesting topics. She's sweet, but I don't think I actually learned anything. To be honest, she didn't actually teach. Lectures were mostly her answering students' questions on something off-topic. Overall, it was a rather difficult class. Labs were even worse. They were uninteresting, and unhelpful.
Interesting, fun, great activities!
Hard class, but probably worth it for most people. I took the class pass/fail, but probably didn't need to. VERY interesting lectures, I find myself talking about things she taught. Lectures were relevant to current times, not so much to tests or quizzes. But IF-ATs are a godsend.
AWESOME. Fascinating class, and it takes someone really cool to be able to teach that kind of material in such a fun, non-awkward, and interesting way. I loved going to class and I learned a ton!
Sehoya is incredible. Brilliant, entertaining, witty, and very good at what she does. Easily one of the best teachers I've ever had.
For some reason I find her oddly attractive. So sue me.
She's funny and an awesome teacher. She makes biology bearable. If you don't like science but want to survive it, take it with Sehoya. Unless you're a prude. Then don't.
Sehoya was awesome. She does stray from the topic sometimes but if you ask intelligent questions you get intelligent answers. You will learn more about sex and its role in life than you ever wanted. If you have a decent base in biology the tests shouldn't be a problem. If you have questions, ask her, chances are she knows the answer.
Sehoya is a great teacher. She is HILARIOUS and I never have to drag myself to come to a 9:45 lecture. However, her tests are super hard. If you can, I recommend taking the class pass-fail. I took Biology of Sex and it was really interesting, but I didn't stress out about my grade because I took it pass-fail. I recommend Sehoya!
Sehoya tries to make class interesting and fun, but I think she tries too hard. Class ends up being a joke. Yes the class is easy but you really have to be in class every single day. Otherwise you miss the lecture and possibly a quiz that could seriously alter your grade.
I adored Sehoya. I am by no means a science person, and she actually made attending lecture an enjoyable experience. She's goofy, and supplies my exact brand of humor so I had a great time. Her lightheartedness and passion about the subject makes the class both fun, and worthwhile.
I'm definitely not a bio major and took this class to fulfill the lib ed. Great choice! It was interesting and Sehoya is great. Super funny, very approachable and wants you to do well. Take her class!
Sehoya is an awesome prof. extremely funny and approachable. Listens to questions and answers respectfully. 200% recommended! If you can get into one of her classes do it!
Sehoya is a great professor. Her class is extremely interesting and she teaches straight forward bio knowledge so you don't get a lot of fluff. I definitely recommend this class to fulfill a Lib Ed requirement. The content is easy to understand and fun to learn about.
Sehoya is hilarious! She makes coming to class a joy. If you have some background knowledge of biology, come to class and listen to her lectures you will have no problem passing the tests! I never even bought the books for this class and got an A because her lectures are so informative. I highly recommend Biology of Sex class with Sehoya. :)
Sehoya is a very interesting and hilarious professor! she is not afraid to tell it like how it is. The tests are pretty hard, but if you do the readings (which I did not) you should get an easy A. The class was really interesting as well. I would recommend her to anyone!
Sehoya is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. I have never before been so stimulated and intrigued by science and I have been having a ton of discussions with my friends about things I learned in this class.Honestly, I almost never read the book but I always checked the blog, and took notes and did the homework and I was fine.
Sehoya is the best. She is so funny & makes the lectures very interactive & interesting. I would suggest taking Biology 1003 especially if it's with Sehoya!
Very fun and interesting professor, always upbeat and engaging
Very approachable. Don't hesitate asking for help, she's excited to help you understand! Also, raise your hand in class ... she loves class participation.
Sehoya is the best professor I've had at the U so far. She really cares about her students and tries to keep everyone engaged with humor and interesting discussion topics. Would definitely recommend taking 1003 with her.
Taking this class was the worse decision I ever made. Exams are very random and lectures weren't very helpful. Learned more from lab TA's than this prof.
Biology of Sex was a great class and Sehoya was the best professor!
Great person and friendly but not a very good TEACHER. tests are very random and difficult. she pulls very random questions from lectures that were only glazed over. over all the class is all over the place and doesn't tie together well. labs are just as random as the tests.
Sehoya is, by far, one of the best professors at the U. She not only makes class interesting & fun, but she is approachable and willing to help you understand material. This class was a blast. She loves the content and will try and make things fair- if a question was vague on the clicker ?s she'll fix it. Tests, though, are by no means easy- study!
No consistent material to study for tests from. Her questions were arbitrary and I had difficulty figuring out what to study since her lectures are more discussion based. Otherwise, she's really cool and personable, but it seems like her tests were unreasonable. But her class is curved so an 85% = A, 75%=B, etc.
Very approachable and nice. Great personality and funny. The only thing is its really hard to study for the tests. Most of the lectures are very discussion based and there is no textbook. Also I personally think the tests are quite hard especially since I couldn't really study for them.
Awesome professor. She always tries really hard to keep it interesting. Attend lectures, they are worthwhile and fun
Dr. Sehoya is a genuinely nice prof. She is very approachable and always available to answer questions. She fully understands that the topic may be difficult, and will do the best she can to better explain the material. Overall, it was a pleasure to have her as a teacher, and I highly recommend this class for anybody who struggles with bio.
Wonderful professor! Super passionate and enthusiastic about biology! Her attitude is incredibly contagious; just going to this class would brighten up my day! Class is very fun and the material is really interesting most of the time. Lab is fairly dry, but oh well. The class is not difficult at all if you pay attention and study a bit.
Sehoya is awesome. Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. Course isn't super easy, but she's awesome and you learn a lot.
I had a lot of people tell me to take her bio of sex class...and I still can't figure out why. It is AWFUL! Her tests are hard because she doesn't give you direction on them. I also emailed her 4 times throughout the semester and she never responded. She's a nice person, kind of, but her class is awful.
Very nice professor overall. Course material can get interesting. No textbook so kind of hard to find info sometimes. Was pretty funny at times too. My biggest problems were that the lab didn't really have anything to do with lecture, (although the labs got super interesting sometimes), and also that it was hard to find info sometimes.
I saw her in the Daily today, and don't be fooled. She thinks that she is funny, but the class is dull and she just acts amped all of the time.
Yes it is a class about sex, but it is STILL a biology class. Take it pass fail!! I thought it would be an relatively easy class, and since it is 4 credits it would boost my GPA- NO. It is still a decently difficult biology class. Don't risk it, and take it pass fail. PLUS if you take it pass fail you may not need to take the final, bonus.
Dr. Cotner is amazing! She knows how to keep things interesting and is extremey knowledgeable about EVERYTHING Biology related. Her class isn't going to be smooth sailing by any means because she wants to challenge you but that's the point of college anyway isn't it?
I love Sehoya to death, she feels like a second mother to me and she's a fantastic teacher. This is my second class with her and I hope to take even more. She's literally so wonderful.
The world needs more professors like Sehoya. She is proof that a class doesn't need to stress you out or keep you up all night in order for you to learn a lot. She focuses on discussions and real world issues, and makes sure everyone is having fun along the way! I learned SO much from her and her class and NEVER had to deal with unfair homework, etc
Although she rarely responds to emails, if you ask her for help in person she will thoroughly explain anything you have trouble with. Also she is the funniest professor at the U and very down to earth.
Sehoya is awesome! She's taught the class for a while and knows what she's teaching. She often gives time for groups to discuss during lecture and is always open to answer questions. Tests can be a little difficult, but all of the topics are very interesting and keeps students engaged most of the time with her attitude, sarcasm and jokes.
With her witty humor, Sehoya is one of the coolest professors you will ever have. She gives very clear lectures and if you get to know her on a personal level she is more than understanding.
Sehoya is passionate about the course, and made you want to learn it. She made discussing sex very comfortable.
Sehoya is one of the best professors I have ever had. She makes class fun and entertaining. She loves everything about biology of sex. Because she makes it so fun and easy to pay attention, tests are not hard; just read her slides and review the clicker questions. If you need a biology credit, take this class! you only need an 85% to get an A-
Great professor. Incredibly passionate about the material and does a great job of making the lectures interesting.
Topic was incredibly interesting! She made the experience enjoyable. Four years after taking the class, I still talk about the things I learned.
This class is a lot of busy work and random assignments that are really stupid but its not too hard. The labs get more fun as you go throughout the semester. She is funny and the lectures are boring but entertaining.
Awesome professor, makes class fun. A lot of stuff to do though, easy to get lost.
This was my favorite class I've ever taken. Sehoya is absolutely hilarious and genuinely amazing (-ly hot) without compromising her professionalism--meaning her lectures are harmoniously fun and informative. She's also very organized, which (as a student) is super appreciated. God willing, my future kids will be able to take this class with her!
She's a very cool and entertaining professor! The class might be hard and dull in the beginning but gets easier and fun halfway. Just attend lecture and lab then you'll do fine. I'd recommend her if you're looking for a course to fulfill your generals.
Sehoya is a very entertaining professor with lots of enthusiasm and passion for her subject. She understands this is the biology class for students who don't care about biology. However, her tests are frustrating since she does a poor job of actually summarizing what your suppose to learn.
Seyoha is so funny. She is the perfect teacher to teach Biology of Sex. Keeps class fun. Great sense of humor. Highly reccomend you take this class.
I am not a fan of Biology or science in anyway, but Sehoya made this a really wonderful class. It can be a lot of work but she gives you many online resources (including the textbook, yay free!!) that can help you succeed in this class. The curve for grading is absolutely wonderful, an 85 in the class will get you an A. Plus the labs are amazing!
She is amazing, so take her class if you need a BIOL course!
Pros: Tries to make class fun Knowledgeable She's funny Very understanding Flexible Great lectures Effective communicator Super nice Cons: Lots of group projects Lots of busy work Using Canvas is a mess Verdict: You will pass if you do all the work and come to class.
Amazing class even better teacher. You can tell she really cares about the material and teaching the students.
Lots of busy work but overall easy A. Sehoya makes class fun and entertaining. If you don't want to put in much work take it pass fail because lab is a ton of work and homework.
Sehoya is the best professor I have had at UMN. She's the ideal professor - not just knowledgeable, but truly passionate about teaching. No wonder this class is so popular. Reading assignments are manageable, so keep up with them - TopHat quizzes happen just about every class and involve info from the readings. I love Sehoya and this class!
I'm not at all a "science person", yet Sehoya will probably be the best professor I've ever had. She is engaging, funny, smart and super caring. The class is very interesting, and she makes it approachable for non-biology majors. Highly recommend.
Sehoya is a great person and is super receptive to feedback about the content and class format. The class isn't a human sexuality class which is what it's kind of advertised as, but definitely bio heavy. Not worth taking pass/fail, it wouldn't be too much more work to get an A. You learn some cool stuff and Sehoya does make lecture worthwhile.
Sehoya is a passionate professor who is genuinely excited about teaching. Fairly easy class and I found myself actually wanting to learn the material. Most of the work will be in the labs and a lot is busy work, but otherwise this is a great class. By far the best BIO class to take.
She is one of my favorite professors in this school. The exams could be too detailed based on the lecture content and you should work hard to get high scores. The labs are super funny and my TA which is Elizabeth Jensen is really nice. I was one of the only two international students in the lab section, and my TA concerns me a lot.
Sehoya is great at making this class interesting for people who are not interested in sciences. She is always in a good mood and makes long lectures go by quick. Although there is a lot of busy work within the class, if you put in the effort you will get a good grade.
Sehoya is a real joy. Lectures are very funny and entertaining - she manages to make it not weird, which is impressive given the subject matter. Gives a lot of opportunities to boost your grade throughout semester so exams don't sink your grade. Make sure you do readings so you know what is being discussed in class, otherwise you might be lost.
Sehoya is amazing. I was really overwhelmed at the start of the semester with this class bcuz I am not a bio person but it ended up being very fun and interesting. Go to lecture and take notes. Top hat questions in class easy points. Exams are not weighted heavy so takes stress off.
Sehoya was one of the best professors I have had at the U! Lots of participation/attendance points, but lectures are fun, so they are not bad to go to at all! Pretty much everything except for the exams you will get 100 percent for completing it. IMO, easy and fun A!
Sehoya is amazing. The class is still Biology, and during the first half of the semester there is a lot of specific biology content that is somewhat difficult, however the class is interesting and Sehoya is so lively, funny, intelligent, and really cares about her students. I am so sad that the class has ended. Labs are also SO fun!
She was amazing. My favorite professor so far.
Sehoya is probably my favorite professor that I have had at the U. Her lectures are very engaging and she is good at tailoring them for the non-biology major. She is also super funny and cares about all of her students.
Take this class if you need an easy LibEd! Sehoya knows that no one is a Bio major and tailors the class to that. She wrote the textbook and the lab manual, so she really knows what shes talking about. She is so passionate about everything she talks about and just wants you to learn in the most interesting way she can. It will get awkward, be ready
Sehoya is amazing and super chill! She makes the lectures interesting and fun and knows almost everyone in the class is not a biology major so she simplifies many concepts. There were weekly quizzes and weekly group projects but they weren't very hard. You have weekly readings but they are fun to read. I definitely would take this class again.
Sehoya is a very fun professor and is clearly passionate about her work and knows A LOT. She will gladly reexplain hypotheses and processes in ways that everyone can understand. If you take her classes online, she makes in-class polls which are basically practice questions for quizzes - so participate and take them seriously! It will help.
I took this as a libed and I LOVED it. She is so funny and passionate about her work. She is also very engaging which makes it easy to pay attention during class! The material is super interesting and you get to do a lot of creative group assignments. You stick with the same group the whole time so pray you get a good one lol
The professor makes lectures interesting and you have lecture quizzes each week so it's worth going but not mandatory. Lab is run by a different person but it's not difficult as long as you read the pre-lab just make sure to communicate with your lab group. A lot of small assignments but she's really understanding and works with her students.
Sehoya was great! She made the lectures really engaging and fun while still informative and on task. Personally, there was too much group work which is just not my speed in an online class, but overall it was a good course!
It's been a few years since I took Sehoya's class, but she stands out in my memory as being a really great professor. Super charismatic, funny, and kind. Tests cover a lot, but study resources are easily accessible. She once spontaneously dropped by TA office hours before a big exam and casually started answering questions. It was super helpful!!
