Do not take him for Anatomy and Physiology. His accent is so thick you cannot understand him. he regularly falls behind in lecture and his lectures are completely useless. Read the book and teach yourself the material, you're better off that way. He will teach you nothing.
I thought he was great. Takes time to really explain material. Would definitely take a class w/ him again. If you go to class, pay attention, study, try to keep up w/ reading, there is no way, seriously, you could not get an easy A in lecture. Exams: fair, about as easy as he could possibly make them, lot of Xtra cred padded in & some curving too
He is impossible to understand. I went to his office to ask him questions and he did not no what I was saying. He only grades you on tests.
Great guy! Means well but hard to understand.. His entire grading throughout the year is based on three exams which are very easy. Do the study guide he gives you and memorize that; everything on the study guide is on the test
Super nice guy! He means well and definitely tries to help his students. He will curve the exams if the grades are a bit low. It was normally about 5-8 point curve per exam. But,he's definitely hard to understand. Also, he lets you use a notecard for the exams.
Great Professor, very passionate about the material. Go to class, take notes from the lecture, and don't be a slacker and you will do fine. Highly recommended.
His class is easy but his class can be very boring. I barely took notes because everything he wants you to know are on his powerpoints. His exams are all open book. Overall, good class to take for a general requirement you want done.
Took Anatomy/Phis with this guy. Okay class, but he was teaching chemistry stuff in the beginning, and starting going into genetics.. That's the only part that made me angry. Pretty much did a Biology class in his Anat/Phis lecture. Barely lectured about the human body, which Anat/Phis is supposed to be.
Sit close IF you actually want to hear him! Exams are based off of lecture and review guide, which is very very easy if you study it and GO to lecture. Book and ppts offer extra details that won't be tested on. nonetheless look through the ppts. He is SO nice and passionate, very enjoyable. JUST SIT UP FRONT THOUGH, or you will fall asleep!
Go to the class and study the powerpoints to do well in this class. Sit close if you want to understand him at all.
Great teacher! I understood him just fine!
He was kind of boring but he gave us study guides and gave us about 6 extra points on every test.
Super easy class if you actually GO and PAY ATTENTION! I got over 100% on every exam. His exams are super easy. There is no attendance, and all powerpoints are put online.
Not a bad teacher, just difficult to understand. His accent is very thick. If you would like to understand him sit near the front. If you go in for extra help he will help, again his accent is hard to understand though.
Go to lecture and study from his powerpoints. He doesn't trick anyone on the exams. His exams are easy. Just simple and main contents from the powerpoint. His accent is only a bit hard to understand for the first 2 weeks. After that it's fine. Honestly.
Very knowledgeable, willing to address all questions in a variety of approaches; assignments are applicable and appropriate, with clear expectations. Goal of instructor is obviously to educate, not to grade. Friendly, approachable, challenges students to think differently / apply knowledge, but able to assist those with lesser understanding.
Selvakumar Ramakrishan is great at using visuals to guide you through the class. He's very approachable and has a vast knowledge on the subject. The only issue I had during the class was understanding his thick accent. Best advice: sit close if you wish to understand him easier.
Selva is so difficult to understand unless you get there early to sit in the front. He reads straight off the powerpoint slides and doesn't add any additional information, so since they're posted online there's no point in even attending class. The plus side - no homework ever and easy exams if you study the content.
If you're looking for an A, you want to take his class. The exams are easy if you study the review guide. He always adds bonus questions and will curve your grade. You don't need to show up for class because his powerpoints are online. Difficult to understand though.
Selva's class is very straight forward. Show up to class, although it is not mandatory, and look over his powerpoints and you will do just fine. He doesn't require all of the extra crap that Petto does, which is nice. Easy boost to your GPA. He does have a thick accent, so if possible, sit up front.
If you ask for help if needed, and pay attention, it shouldnt be a difficult class. Know your material and pass with ease.
Very hard to understand his accent. I rarely went to lecture and got a B on the exams. He posts study guides which are very helpful. He really wants to see his student succeed so he adds lots of extra credit to exams. all quizzes are pass or fail. doesn't do case studies or online homework.
Selva is great. He is all about making sure his students are learning, rather than useless busy work. It's generally an easy class. Your grade is based off of 3 tests.
He's such a sweet professor! Dr. Selva is very understanding and he makes sure that students understand what he is talking about it. His accent may be kind of hard to understand, but he's such a sweet guy, it's awesome!
He gives extra credit on his exams. Doesn't care for case studies. Just do his study guides and study them like your life depends on them and you'll pass.
Very helpful. Sometimes hardtop understand but knows his stuff. Pretty clear cut on all the stuff you should know. Reviews are almost word for word on tests. Come to class, do your best, you'll do just fine.
He is a very sweet and patient professor! Makes you laugh during lectures and truly cares about his students! Teaches the class very well and makes it clear what is on his exams! He does have an accent but I was able to understand him very well still. He is always available to help students and gives plenty of hints about his exams during lectures.
He is a funny little guy. Hard to understand but if you ask to meet with him during his office hours or make an appointment with him, he is pretty flexible. He seems to have a lot of knowledge about the subject!
Lectures are long, but helpful for knowing what exactly will be on the test. Usually reads straight from powerpoint, but it was all on D2L so it was easy to catch up and know what the topics were for that day. Very helpful when asking questions and really does care about his students.
Loved Selva. Anatomy is hard, so this isn't an easy class but I would pick him over Petto ANY DAY. He dropped all of our case studies for the semester so we didn't have to do them and gave us an extra 5% to our grade. Love love love him! In general, his lectures are long but he's helpful and is willing to go out of his way to help any student.
Cares about his students and what he teaches. Wants students to do well in the class , but the material will take your own time and work to learn too.
I loved taking Selva, his lecture was way easier than the lab portion of this class. I scored over 100 on every exam and did the case studies , which ended up being extra credit when he decided not to count it for credit. Read over his powerpoints from lecture, go to his reviews and finish the study guide he gives. You will do well if you study!
Selva is such a nice teacher. At times can be hard to understand but he is so passionate about his teaching. If you feel you tried your very best and you talk to him, he will add extra points to your exam.
Selva may be a good person, but not so much a good professor. I never went to lectures just because they were a waste of time - I could not understand him! He tries to fit way too much information into one class, that you don't even need to know. Very frustrating. Would not recommend.
Selva was at times difficult to understand, but as long as you attend class you'll be fine. DON'T BUY TEXTBOOK, he only tests on things he teaches in lecture so take notes. Everything on his study guides will be on the exams. I made notecards based on every study guide and easily received an A on each exam.
Selva was very approachable & seemed to really want us all to pass. He offered extra credit on the exams & our TA for lab was way harder than he was. As long as you go to lectures & study his reviews than you should be fine! He reviewed straight from a copy of the exam so those of us that went to the review easily got an A. Don't read the book!
He's a nice guy that is very intelligent, but not a very good professor. He knows his stuff but will often go off on tangents and get completely off subject during lectures. He will help you if needed but it's a pretty easy class. All of his exams you are given a review and you can bring a "cheat sheet" to every exam.
Selva is nice and passionate about biology. However, I found his lectures to be very disorganized and confusing. He curves tests, which is nice overall, but I didn't feel like I learned as much as I'd hoped to. He kept saying "you're all biologists, you should know this stuff." Well, no we're not. That's why we are in school. Overall OK.
Selva is a wonderful man, however, his lectures are---interesting. He's not really organized and will spend several class periods on one topic, then rush to fit things in before an exams. Curves every exam. He tells the class, "You are all biology majors..."--Ummm, No. We're not all bio majors. I had to take it as a requirement for chemistry.
Use the study guides, they help and will be a good summary for the 2nd half of the class, 152. He provides great examples, goes over material several times and relates it to the rest of what we learned. Will work one on one or with small group in office to cover extra material as needed. Very caring and passionate about biology and it shows.
I took Selva for 103 and was confused the entire semester. It was a non-biology major course, but it was hard. But with online exams- in the end got a B (totally thought I'd get a C- or worse though). I took him again last semester and once again never went to lecture- was confused the ENTIRE time- and still somehow ended with a B+. Lab required.
Selva is a fun instructor, though he goes into detail on things that won't be on the exams and sometimes glosses over important bits that will be on the exam. It helps a lot to do independent study in the textbook to prepare yourself for the exam. Approach him if you have questions, he is great at one-on-one help. He wants you to learn!!
Selva has good intentions as a professor, but I found his lectures very all over the place. He's very passionate about what he teaches and goes off into tangents a lot. We didn't have a lot of bio majors in class so he went a little easy on us. He wanted us to pass and enjoy the class. It's not his fault I hate biology but had to take it for credit
Dr. Selva is a nice guy and really enjoys what he teaches. He can be hard to understand though. He gives a study guide for each exam. Do the study guide and you will pass the exams. But I sometimes felt like we didn't learn as much as other students did with other professors.
He is a bit hard to understand but if you spend time on answering the study guide he provides, its not hard to get good grade. I had other professor on the first half, my grade is not so good and it freaked me out. Then I had him second-half of the semester, my grade improve a lot.
Had an amazing time this semester with Prof. Selva. Was very open to any questions students had related to biology, whether it was on topic or not (as long as it did not interfere with lecture). Lab was much more interactive than lecture, which I enjoyed. Would take another course by his.
Literally loved Selva. Exams were easy (can have a cheat sheet of any size), he gives "pop quizzes" during lecture but gives you all the answers and the quiz questions end up later in the exams- so go to class! Lab was easy and there is extra credit worth 5% points in lecture and some in lab that can really boost your grade!
One of the best prof. I've ever had.
Selv was ok. He got off topic a lot and it got really confusing. Exams are pretty easy
The topic of the class was human genetics. The class itself was kind of a joke, but it is clear that he is very knowledgeable and passionate about genetics. Most of the class was just lecture and nothing else, but if you're really into genetics you'll find the class interesting!
Only thing I noticed was that the lab and the lecture were barely related to each other in any way. Pretty much two separate classes.
I'm terrible at biology but it's a GER and I needed to take it. Dr. Selva was obviously passionate but the lectures were so boring and the slides were kind of confusing, which is tough because he can be hard to understand. He is a good professor, but if you aren't good at bio like me, go to class, get extra help, etc. I learned this the hard way.
Dr. Selva is a great way to get rid of a natural science w/ lab GER requirement. Class expectations are clear, lectures are kind of boring but YOU need to attend them in order to do well. I recommend this class to everyone because it is easy and interesting. Selva is generous with extra credit and gives all the answers to in class quizzes
Nice dude, but messy lectures. Way too easy, all tests were open book. Could have passed without attending a single lecture.
Attendance is not mandatory but around Nov. he starts to give out random pop quizzes in class without any notice and he gives all the answers! he also let you use a cheat sheet on the exams, which he gives a study guide to with most of the exam answers! overall a decent teacher!
This semester we unfortunately had the polar vortex; we missed multiple lectures. Selva tried to make it up by speeding through lectures (ask anybody) and talk very fast, and has an accent. He rambles and is incoherent. I asked multiple bio students about him , all disliked him. Lecs are not needed, material online. Bio lab is easy though! :)
He is very knowledgeable and makes the class very relevant to today's world. However, he made his 103 level course painfully easy. All of the exams were open book and the lab was also easy. If you don't want a difficult science course and need an easy A, Take this course.
His lectures are a bit rambly and loose. His powerpoints contained only images (which without attending his lecture become useless). BUT his study guides contain all the material you need to know on the exam (NO surprises). The guy cares more about students than grades (he said this himself). I've had him twice, and both times he's been great. 5/5
Selva wasnt bad. His lectures were boring which made his class unbearable. As long as you do his reviews and look through the slides its pretty easy to pass the class. Hes a good guy just not a very good teacher
Lectures were so boring. Slides were filled with paragraphs and charts. Very hard to pay attention.
Selva is a sweet person, but his lectures are not very structured. He often falls behind in the material and goes off topic. He posts all lecture slides online and he offers helpful review guides. Although he's a great person, I'd have to say I taught myself the majority of the material.
His lecture might be boring, but you will miss important points if you skip, so dont skip class. I got A even though I am from S Korea. As I am an international student I felt I have to work harder than others. If you do work hard, you can get A
VERY lecture heavy and a little difficult to understand. Lectures are disorganized and he gets off topic easily. Pay attention in lecture, many questions on exams are not presented in slides or book (do not get the book). Study guides for each exam (curved) were very helpful. Overall, OK course, prof is passionate about bio and go to the SI.
Selva is very passionate about biology, which really shines through in his entire personality. However, he is very disorganized and it isn't always clear what is important and what is off-topic. He does not usually define things, instead opting to explain them in a long-winded manner. PAY ATTENTION TO THE "RANDOM" THINGS HE DRAWS. Exams not easy.
He rambles and rambles and team led during lectures. If you have a strong drive to go to a lecture you do not understand and still take notes you will be fine in this class, however if you do not go to classes where you feel the lecture is pointless and it is not mandatory you wont do so hot
He is really nice professor. I took his class twich Bio102 and 103. Since he teaches more than 4 courses every semester, he is always busy and might not respond your email. However, he gives office hours after class. His exam is mostly from powerpoints and reviews.
Good professor, doesn't give out any homework but does stray from lectures a bit. Would recommend for an easy 3 credit lecture for bio. Doesn't take attendance but there are a few random pop quizzes. Exams are pretty laid back; multiple choice and sometimes the last two questions on the exam will ask how'd you like the course and rate it (USUALLY)
Lectures may be a bit on the boring side but he is so passionate about certain topics that it's hard not to love his love for the field. He's like a kid in a candy store when he gets to lecture - wants to share so much info with students and truly cares about them. He wants his student to succeed AND learn! It's so refreshing.
Selva is an amazing professor, he genuinely cares about his students. He is passionate, so he can sometimes get carried away with talking about something, but overall he is good at teaching the material. He also gives 3 extra points after every exam. He is by far my favorite biology professor, I highly recommend him!
Selva is the man when it comes to Biology!! He clearly knows what he's teaching and any student who has him, including myself at the moment, can say how top-notch of an educator he is, if not one of the best at UWM. Not only that, he always gives out extra credit points after the exams that aren't even difficult, just study! I would take him again!
I very much enjoyed this class thanks to Selva! This class was lecture heavy, but the 3 extra credit points given for every exam made it easy to get a passing grade. Although he may go on tangents during lectures, I respect Selva's knowledge and passion about biology. As a bio major, I hope to have him as a professor again in the future!
Lectures are very disorganized and hard to follow. He is very smart but this sometimes works to his disadvantage because he forgets to bring it down to a beginner/intermediate level. This is all difficult because his exams follow the lectures so you don't have any other resources to learn if you aren't able to follow along. Wouldn't recommend him
Absolutely horrible. Lectures make no sense, extremely disorganized, tests aren't usually formatted in proper english, little to no extra help when you need it.
Everyone I have talked to who is in this class, including myself, has been to the lecture about 5 times this year. It is very boring and his accent makes it really hard to understand him especially if you're sitting in the back. There is no homework but in-class material on tests. I have not gotten below and B on any test and he gives them online.
In his lectures, all he talks about his COVID-19 and forces his opinions on you completely. While I share similar to the same beliefs, I went to this class to learn the content, not to listen about COVID-19 for two hours a week. The labs were easy A's and the lab quizzes were hard. The exams are online and are difficult if you don't take notes.
Basically no one went to lecture bc exams were online and could be easily found by through the review he posts. Got only 100s on exams, but lab was a different story. It was hard for no reason. Studying for lab quizzes felt like studying for actual exams, so be sure to memorize a lot. The lab practical was fine if you understood everything though.
the exams weren't bad at all. even the lab quizzes weren't extremely difficult. The professor cares about what he's teaching so it made learning even more fun. We switched professors after the third exam and the other professor was good as well. The lab practical though, goodness, make sure to study efficiently for that.
He used to get sidetracked all the time and it was confused what the main points were. I feel like the lecture couldve been half the time if he were to focus on key ideas and concepts.
Food, Community, and Neuroscience is a valuable course. I would add that although Professor Selvakumar is kind, his grading is very subjective, which happens quite often in academics but should not.
He explains stuff very thoroughly, if you pay attention and straight up just write down every word he says you'll do good. Everything on the exam was 100% fully talked about in class. Also in lecture he will straight up say 'exam question' and give the answer it was always that exact question and answer on the exam.
While lectures aren't required by this professor, I still go as I find them to be supplemental enough to get through the course easily without having to read the textbook so far.
Struggled with lectures bc I had no background in biology, but I survived. The study guides saved me, but were only given near exam times. Very lenient with exams which I'm thankful for. Answers questions thoughtfully, but sometimes goes off topic. Goes off topic during lecture sometimes too. Otherwise, he's very knowledgeable & nice.
He was my least favorite professor this year (freshman), sweet guy but following along in lecture was very difficult. I attend all my lectures and usually take notes but often times he'll only be on a slide for 5-10 seconds before moving on immediately. I learn best through my lectures which made the class hard for me. -tests are all online
Professor seems to know his materials but it's hard to understand him in lectures especially since he doesn't use the microphone. The slides aren't the most organized and it is hard to find specific information on them. But the exams are online.
I love this man. He is so passionate about the subject he teaches and you can tell he really cares about us. He does go off on tangents, but he gives out study guides that are very straightforward and prepare you for the exam. All exams are online and fairly easy. I would definitely retake him.
He went over the time limit several times, not that I particularly minded, but it can get old pretty fast. He shows genuine interest in the things he's teaching, so that's always a positive.
Can't understand his thick accent and he also doesn't use the microphone. Barely able to understand his class.
He gets off topic a lot in class and ends up wasting a lot of the class time and misses teaching material. He adds 3 extra points to the exams, which is nice. He's also often hard to understand, and he doesn't explain concepts very well. The class is a fairly easy course but he managed to make it very difficult. Take a different proff. if you can.
Very passionate about his teaching, it's clear that he loves biology. It's sometimes hard to understand his accent but, but I sat in the middle and I could hear him perfectly fine volume wise. I never really payed attention to the lectures, and honestly attendance isn't really required. The textbook was pretty interesting.
Selva is one of the better professors I've had at UWM. I enjoyed his lectures and I felt like I learned a lot in his class. Very passionate about teaching so huge bonus there. It did take me a week or two to get used to his accent but after that I felt I could understand his lectures just fine.
Class in itself is easy as exams are online, and questions are on pretty general biology knowledge. Selva is very enthusiastic about Biology, listening to his lectures is endearing as it's evident he loves the subject. That said, he can be difficult to comprehend sometimes, and lectures may stem off to a random topic of his interest.
I didn't attend any lecture after the two lectures of the start of the semester. The lecture exams and class quizzes were online. In the lectures, he was yapping about random topics and went over the class time schedules. Make sure to attend your labs and complete the assignments. The exams are on paper and the quizzes are online. Multiple choice.
Professor Selva is enthusiastic about biology, but can be hard to follow at times. The exams are online and fairly easy, with study guides to help prep. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for studying.
Off-topic and uninteresting lectures that never end, long labs, lots of homework in lab. However attendance in lecture isn't required, all the non-lab exams are online, and the TA is a great help.
Lectures were okay albeit a bit boring at times (admittedly fell asleep a few times when he'd dim the lights). The labs, however, were lots of fun! I was friends with everyone at my particular lab table, and the TA was very entertaining. All the quizzes were online and based on the lectures, and we had no final exam. Has a bit of an accent.
Lectures really aren't necessary, the tests are all online and you get all the information you need in labs as its basically a second lecture. There's no final, but there is a final in the lab that gets a lot of people as you don't expect it to be difficult. Depending on the lab TA, they'll take points off for random things, so just pay attention.
It could almost have been an online class with all the lecture slides and exams being on Canvas (even the final). It was super easy lecture-wise, but labs were slightly more difficult. Couldn't really understand his accent that much. I also missed most of my lectures, but I never felt too stressed about it.
Immediately talked about making next class paper only. I DO 20% BETTER WHEN I CAN DO TESTS AT HOME! Either get with the times or go back to 1950
Started in my class halfway through the year. Now they decided no more online exams & want to change to paper exams cuz they assume we're cheating & decided attendance would be take from our signature when all they do is read the slides on canvas. If everything was going to be changed, we should have been notified well in advance. TERRIBLE teacher.
He cares about his students and you can tell. He is friendly and always willing to have a conversation about anything. Would recommend
