Good prof, but has problems with the english language
Easy tests and class. Bad fashion sense!!!!
pretty funny and really knows his stuff
Great sense of humor. a little hard to understand.. love the ps2 sweater.
Very boring lectures that are nothing more than high school Social Studies. If you've taken Social Studies 20 you've done his class already. He wore the same sweater EVERY DAY to class for at least two months..yuck! Terrible fashion sense!
Good prof in that he knows his material, bad prof in that his understanding of the English Language impedes his marking of written reports, you will suffer for it.
Lin is very nice and has a good sense of humour, but his classes are very boring. We only got through two PP slides each week. If you need to find the LRC, Lin can help you.
So boring, do not take him...
WORST PROF EVER...i thought i was going to pass out from boredom...i think i did a couple of times...hes easy, but only because the material is easy, besides that...id go a different path.
Great class, Sen is very thorough. He does need to add a few items to his wardrobe.
a great teacher. funny
A prof's worth is not determined by their clothes. Dr.Lin is nice, caring and teaching dry intro levels and giving honest effort. Further pols studies will show that it's the issues being studied that are important, and Lin presents them in a critical manner. There are MANY worse Cdn pol. profs!
Before Sen I love politics, after Poli Sci 101 with him, not so much
very helpful,easy exams,and a fair marker
pretty good
excellent professor. extensive knowledge in area. very helpful.
Sen, get a wardrobe man! One sweater a semester is unhygenic! Otherwise he adds some humour to an otherwise dull class. Many small quizzes so as NOT overwhelm you which should lead to an easy A if you apply yourself moderately. Generally if you want to pad your GPA take this course.
Pretty boring teacher. Doesn't add much to the textbook. Easy class.
I thought Sen was a great teacher, even though some of his notes were unclear. That's probably just because English is his second language. It's a great class to begin with, and he makes it even more fun.
not good
That guy below me is a bit harsh he obviously failed or something, Sen is sooo easy. All you need to do is study the practice questions he gives you for each week and you'll get a B+ easy. I love his jokes on the Marijuana party.

hey was pretty good, quite easy. but he should probably change his sweater every once in a while. he is pretty funny so that helps you stay awake in class.
Hes cool, tests are decent, no tricks, read the hand outs and do the questions and readings and its easy.
Very helpful. Study your text book and read his lecture notes. The course is pretty straight forward.
Talks about nothing other than the Marijuana party....
Proficient and clear. Just read the text and do the study q's for marks. You learn the relevant stuff, no extra filler. A little dry at times, but he's usually enthusiastic! (The nature of the beast is that pols is dry).
This class was painful and I could hardly understand the prof. Take it if you must, and it's easy to do well, but if you know anything about basic Canadian politics, don't bother going to class.
Easy class, the lecture is a kinda boring, but he try to make it interesting. People don't like to attend to his class, but I think it helps if you don't have ideas about asian pols. His notes are really important, read them and understand them. I didn't read the text book at all.
GPA booster. He's not as funny as he thinks he is and his voice is annoying but he makes it easy to get a good mark. Only read the text if the answer to a study question isn't in the notes (use those questions!). Notes are on Web CT. Downside is that we had 2 midterms, a final and a paper.
I don't care what anyone says, this guy is AMAZING! Not only is is impossible to do poorly in his class but he makes politics so simplistic. One of the best proffs I have had. Made me love politics!
Good prof, jokes around and simplifies everything. I didn't read the text, but his extra readings and questions on WebCT help alot in prep for the tests. His sample questions are very close to what he asks on his tests. Class was a little boring, but it's good for increasing your GPA.
While he seems like he knows this topic, i could hardly understand him. When i would ask a question he would answer everything but the question. What he asks for in essay hand-outs and what he marks for differed. I would never take a class with this guy again, however if your in his class already not worth dropping, just double check everything
Not a very interesting approach, long winded explanations that will put most students to sleep.
SOOOOO Boring. Cannot stand his lectures, it's nice that he uses blackboard but politics should never be this boring
Really dry, though he can't help it. (Its just the course.) All his notes are on blackboard, you don't need to show up. Tests are easy, same with term paper. Easy GPA booster!
Very knowledgable prof. He knows his stuff. There is a lot of material to cover. Read the text, go to class and you will do fine. While some remark he is "boring", if you have a genuine interest in politics, you will think otherwise. At times he will dumb it down, but I am sure that is due to diversity in the student body, which is fair enough.
Talk, Talk, Talk, Talk, no interaction.
Really funny - if you pay attention and read text you'll do great- he gives good examples - but slow
Heavy accent but extremely well-spoken. Clearly looks like he enjoys being there teaching, all smiles, cracking jokes. Course was fair in terms of difficulty, posts all his notes on blackboard which is rad. Exceptionally kind and helpful. Definetely knows his stuff, fantastic prof overall, going to be looking into his higher level poli sci classes.
Just absolutely brutal. Talks so slow, so hard to understand, terribly boring. Although he does post his lectures on BB be careful because there is little to zero information within his lectures.
Really nice guy, but not the best prof. Style is very boring, doesn't give you a whole lot of info in class. You're better off not attending and then just reading the book before the exams - almost all questions are text-based. Always there during office hours to help tho. Very easy on the exams, but tougher on the papers, so show him your draft.
Takes forever to make his point. I hardly learned anything from him. His notes have the wrong textbook pages on them, but his study questions are helpful. I found it easier to learn just by reading the textbook. I'm sure he knows his stuff but his teaching style just did not work for me.
Not the best prof I've had and this is my 2nd semester of University. I've been to all his classes except one, and he doesn't make politics very interesting. He's great for help, and the questions are useful, but he doesn't really teach the material properly
His exams are really easy- everything comes out of his powerpoints, which he posts online, so don't really have to attend class. His lectures are really slow, and he makes terrible beer jokes that only he finds funny, but he's a really easy-going professor.
Pretty boring in class. Makes weird jokes about beer often. Also will pose questions to class but if no one answers he will just wait for an answer... awkward! But overall a nice guy
this guy is not the best prof to have, not very helpful, he doesn't stick to concepts he gives you for the exams and i would definitely never take another class with him
Sen Lin is a really funny and good prof. I don't understand what people are talking about... do you want him to crack jokes or discuss content? Is he supposed to dance? He's a political science prof and so he discusses comparative politics. If you don't find this interesting then perhaps you are taking the wrong class
Lin's online notes, while hard to read (due to them being less notes and more paragraphs of raw information) are actually quite fantastic . . . the classes, though, aren't that useful. He talks in circles, takes too long to get through material, and gives midterms based on material covered in the previous class, leaving almost no time to study it.
Although I never attended many of his lectures, his lecture notes were always relevant to his tests. He also used a good balance in exams by pulling out material from both lectures and the text book. He gave good study guides and set clear expectations for the term essay. I can understand why some people wouldn't like his approach but I loved it!
Sen is the man. It takes a while to realize it, but I have taken two of his classes and they are zero stress. If you have a passing interest in politics the subject material will keep you entertained. In regards to teaching the subject, he provides answers to pointed questions. His lectures are not his strength, but he's lights out everywhere else.
Awful lecturer. Boring, rambles, and difficult to understand. I attended the first class and never went again and got an A.
Really great prof for a 300 level class.
Not a great lecturer. All the relevant information is included in the notes, but I walked out of the course feeling like I didn't really retain much. The exams are easy, but in general his marking seems pretty arbitrary, especially on the term paper, which is frustrating. I won't take another course with him; there's just so many other great profs.
There's not a whole lot of positive to say about him. He seems like a good guy, but he is a not a good instructor by any means. First off, he shows up at exactly 9 or a few minutes after. He rambles on and takes forever to get to the main point. You are better off just staying at home and reading the slides.
Easy credits
Dr. Lin is a really sweet guy. He's funny, makes us all laugh at least once per class. I get that the material is a little dry but really what isn't dry about Chinese politics? He really knows his stuff about it though and his slides / handouts are very helpful. I enjoy his classes.
AWESOME PROF! Material is dry but this class is an easy A. Would take his class again!!
He's a good prof and I enjoyed him. Everything you need to know is on the lecture slides and gives out guidelines to the midterms and finals. Classes can be dry but everything is straight forward and I would take a class with him again
Everyone needs to give Sen Lin a break. You can tell that he really cares for his students and goes above and beyond to help them out. His lectures can be a little dry, sure, but students often take advantage of his kindness. He sets out clear expectations in his course outlines. He is a good guy :)
What's up with all the negativity? Sen Lin is the man. He sets out clear expectations in his course outlines and tells you how to prepare for exams. Sure the lecture can be a little boring here and there but other then that he is awesome. He emails you right away if you need help and offers so much help. Would recommend him 10/10
Professor Sen is a very nice guy, but his lectures are extremely boring. Exams are straight forward and easy as long as you study his lecture slides posted on blackboard. I barley attended class and still did well.
I love Sen Lin's classes. You don't have to show up, he marks fairly easy, and he tells you exactly what's going to be on all his tests. Lectures are a bit boring, and sometimes with his accent he is difficult to understand. On the other hand, if you read the text, or even just the text readings, I can't imagine anyone getting below a B.
This guy is so great that after 101 I took 221 just to have him. His power point slides are in point form and he doesn't just read them like a robot. He's funny and likes to make lots of jokes about beer which keeps class atmosphere light. He's always there to help if you have a question or just to clarify tests are easy
His lecture slides are probably longer than the text, and he is very dry in class. I had to keep myself from falling asleep more often than not.
Very dry lectures, however, tests are easy as long as you read lecture slides mainly and some textbook reading.
Sen is an awesome professor, and he's hilarious (get ready for beer jokes). He has a bit of an accent but you get used to it quickly. Poli Sci 101 is a very easy course, and you should be able to come out of it with an A with a Prof like Sen.
He clearly outlines what will be on the exams (emailed out a guide) and his lecture slides hold all the information, did not attend class often and did very well studying on my own. The slides he uses during his lectures are paragraphs on paragraphs and his accent was thick which did make him hard to follow. Overall, an easy A.
I had such a hard time actually paying attention in his lectures and he took forever to mark papers
I try and enrol in any class that this professor is teaching. He post guidelines for the midterm and final. EASY A! I never went to class because of work, but for the classes that I were able to attend, it was not boring as others have stated. Its POLS, you should be engaging in classroom discussions; thats the point of his lectures!
Lectures are BORING. Gives VERY detailed guidelines for midterm and final, which was great. You can sometimes even predict what may be on the test. Here's my problem: his marking on the term paper was arbitrary, I scored the highest in every grading criteria and only got 85% on the paper, which was disappointing. Takes long to mark things
Sen is kind, knows his course material, is always willing to give extra help, makes hilarious beer jokes and gives pretty dry lectures. He is a good guy, I have taken 4 classes from him. Honest marker.
He posts everything for the midterms in advance and has everything in his lecture notes. Really easy A if you read the text chapters and understand the basic concepts, as his tests aren't too specific. He gots off topic in his lectures and honestly I hardly went and got an A+
Reads straight from the powerpoint however he doesn't post them. If you can learn from the textbook you don't even have to go to class. He always jokes around about beer which is hilarious but his lectures can be extremely dry. Easy A.
It is super easy to get an A in his class with minimal effort. He is really funny but his lectures can be quite boring. He reads straight from the powerpoints he posts online and everything on tests comes straight from the lectures. He is an easy grader and gives straight forward study guides
Great prof. He gives study guides and his test are super easy if you follow them. Attendance is not mandatory. There are two midterms and one essay.
I thought he was a good teacher, made funny jokes and kept things interesting. I never opened the textbook I bought and still got good grades in the class. His lectures are enough for reference and he also supplys a study guide.
Nice guy! Just hard to understand at times and I find he has a hard time getting to the point, going on rabbit trails here and there rambling about something irrelevant. Moves very slow in lectures, 2-3 slides per 1hr lecture. No need to show up to class, just read the textbook and show up for tests.
I would definitely recommend taking his pols101 class as a GPA booster but if you want to learn a lot I would go with another prof
Very chill class. I didnt go to class I just studied his slides before the exam and did fine
honestly, I didn't go to class except for the midterms and finals, and I still did well. his exams are lecture heavy, basically study his slides and you'll be good. don't buy the textbook unless you want to learn more material, but he does not test on the textbook material. good gpa booster.
Very thorough and easy going for POLS 101, friendly and more than willing to help if you ask for it.
Sen admits himself that attendance is not mandatory. I showed up maybe 4 times through the semester, only studied using his powerpoints, and had a gem of a time with this class. Provides guides and grading criteria for everything. The paper was very straightforward and easy. Absolute GPA booster.
His lectures are very boring so you'll probably stop going, but the exams are really easy. He posts all his PowerPoints online so you don't need to go to class. VERY easy A, however the 2000 word essay was a pain.
Best prof ever. I had him for POLS 101, only went for midterm and final and got an A. Not a class that you need to attend as his lecture slides (he posts them online) are what he usually tests on. His midterm and final exam reviews are awesome because he bases the exams from the reviews. Good as GPA booster!!
his lectures are extremely boring, he does not give motivation or inspiration to students to continue going or to care about the subject it is good if you dont have time to go to school all the time, attendance is not needed with him.
Lin, was a decent prof. You are not required to attend class as everything (literally) is on his slides. The only reason I wouldnt take him again is his grading is inconsistent and very unclear. You have no heads up of how he is grading, and no explanation as to how he came up with grade on tests or papers. Very frustrating! caution on marking!!!!
Sen Lin is a gem, he posts incredibly informative slides which is what he tests off of and he sets out very clear expectations for his midterm, final and paper.
Not a good professor. Don't take a class with him. You will learn nothing. Easy A though.
While his exams may come off easy, his grading criteria is unclear and vague. Simple puts circles or question marks and slashes marks on written portion answers with no rhyme or reason. When I spoke to him about my concerns about my final exam mark, he came off rude and condescending. I had to remind him itd a first year class. AVOID. BORING PROF.
The most boring and dead class. There's no point in showing up since he posts notes. Never went to class but midterm, final and to hand in my essay and got an A. He gives a study guide and bases his exams on it so work on that. The essay was 2000 words so it was a huge pain to get done. Other than that it's an easy class
He's a super nice guy and always available if you need help but the lectures are kind of boring and by the end of the semester only 5 or so people out of 80 were regularly showing up to class. His slides show everything you need to know but some times the grading criteria is unclear.
Professor Lin's class can be very dry but for anyone looking for a GPA booster I definitely recommend this class! You don't need to show up for class and there's 1 midterm and a term essay.
I never skipped class prior to taking POLS 261 with Prof. Lin- his lectures are extremely dry and I hated the class. We are marked on three things, but due to COVID19, the final was cancelled. He told us that after we submitted our papers, that the mark for the final was going to be the one from the midterm or the paper, whichever one was higher.
Dr. Lin's class was kind of dull but very easy. The term paper was short and expectations for it were clear, and the midterm and final were extremely fast and easy. Lin isn't an engaging lecturer, but if you follow the powerpoints or download them yourself you get basically all the information you need so it's not hard to follow.
I took this class online and it was really easy. there was 2 midterms an essay & a final. he just posted slides and no lectures which made it a bit difficult but the exams were pretty easy for the most part! there was a 2200 word essay tho which kinda sucked.
Dr. Lin is very nice and very approachable, but 375 is a very difficult course and the content is difficult. In person wouldve have been much easier, but Dr. Lin expects you to do it on your own. You can reach out and he does respond, but no feedback was given on anything so its frustrating when you dont know why you received a grade that is low
The content presented in this class is exceedingly dry. The assignments were mediocre in difficulty. Everything presented is in the PowerPoints, so if you follow those along with the textbook you will pass just fine. Overall not engaging or interesting.
Dr. Lin expects you to go from answering a few short answers for the midterms to a 2000+ word term essay with minimal preparation. He doesn't provide feedback on the midterms and doesn't reply to emails quickly either. I don't recommend taking classes with Dr. Lin if you're looking for a professor that cares about your success.
He is seriously underrated and has become one of my favourite profs. His seminar was one of my favourite classes, he should teach profs how to do seminars. He really encourages opinion, critical analysis, and perspectives. He challenges you and its wonderful. I would absolutely take another seminar with him. I wish he taught more pols classes!
Even if you study the notes, read the textbook AND his slides, hell still mark harshly. Dont recommend.
The lectures aren't engaging at all , and on top of that, he has missed multiple classes. At one point he even missed an entire class because he went to classroom on the wrong floor... Overall, Sen Lin came off as a lazy prof. You're better off taking this course with another prof Imo
if u have the chance run he is super rude and does not care about your circumstances not a good prof at all
His lectures are pretty boring to sit through, he really just reads the slides. His grading was tough and unclear. He would never give full marks on questions and was not helpful to my classmates who had concerns about their exam marks. There are 2 midterms, a final, and a final paper. The class itself is pretty easy and everything was open book.
