English is his second language. Class is based on handouts, lectures, a project, multiple choice test, bonus questions on the the test to help boost points. No homework, but must study everything he mentions, the labs, and readings b/c they're all tested. I study moderately. I have a B right now.
no hw, no pop quizzes. Grade based on 2 lecture exams,2 lab exams, 2 quizzes, and 1 project. Test are not too bad. i studied the weekend before it and got an A in lab and B on lecture exam. Lectures are bit boring, and he gets annoyed if you ask too many questions. Overall, not too hard class!
He is difficult to understand due to his accent. Since there is hardly any HW, lab reports, or quizzes due it is tough to know what to study when. I am repeating with another teacher.
He is a nice teacher. I took his Bio 40A & B. He is generous to give us credit. As if you spend time to study textbook in advance, it is not difficult to understand. He tries his best to use aid tool to help us understand. His test question is not hard, too. Bio 40 is an interesting subject.
HE'S A GREAT TEACHER, ITS EASY TO UNDERSTAND HIM, HE'S VERY HELPFUL.
his class is pretty easy, he doesn't try to make it difficult. his lectures are a bit hard to follow and organization isn't so good though. he's willing to help and easy to talk to.

The subject matter is sometimes very difficult to understand. Dr. Sengupta is extremely helpful whenever he is asked for clarifications. The tests are relatively easy assuming you have done the homework and read the material thoroughly. He is very fair in his grading. Be prepared to do a significant amount of homework and reading.
He is very nice and says words a little different than usual, which is funny and cute in an older, professor sort of way. If he likes you and you show effort, you get an A. Group project, you don't need to go overboard, easy A. Nice guy.
Dr. Sengupta is a brilliant professor. He knows his subject & he presents it with clarity, precision, and understanding. He makes this very difficult material understanndable and retainable. His lectures reflect his great love of teaching, and his respect for his students.
very unprepared, (he probablydoesnot want to be teaching this class) lopsided, unclear, confusing

great teacher. 40b is supposed to be harder than a & c. he made it easy to understand the material. really helps you out if you're lost. i would have gotten an A instead of a B if i didnt miss class so much. go to class! take notes! he goes over practice exams before every exam!
Holy cow!!! Make sure you make good, organized notes off of his handouts and STUDY a lot before any exam off of those notes and your book. Attendance is mandatory because he takes role in the lecture and lab. Good Luck!!!
Okay, first of all, get ready to take intensive notes really fast and study hard. His lecture exams are a big challenge, but his lab exam was easier! I ended up getting Bs in his lecture exams and an A+ in his lab exam! dont worry he only has one lab exam. He will give you quizzes as well, make sure you come prepared to class every week! hyper one!
He was a very difficult teacher. For me his lectures were completely useless. The lectures were just right out of the book. He was difficult to understand because of his accent. The practical was very difficult with over 200 items to memorize. The tests were very difficult and long. I wold not take this teacher again.
I enjoyed taking this class. He is a very helpful and friendly. although his accent is a bit hard to understand sometimes but its not that bad. I don't see how people say this is a hard class. Bio40 isn't supposed to be cake class. His test were pretty straight forward and easy if you do the reading.
I was frustrated all quarter. A lil difficult to understand cuz of his accent. He used BORING PwrPnt slides every lecture w/a bunch of text. Required we read every page in all chapters. Kept us in class longer than expected. Labs SUCK! Lectured in lab cuz he ran out time in lecture. His examples were lame. I got an A so maybe it wasn't THAT bad.
Lectures unorganized & hard to follow. Handouts didn't follow lecture, found myself flipping pages to see where he was lecturing from. Doesn't teach the lab, you're on your own, he just puts out what you need to use, and sometimes leaves. Only 1 cum. lab at end of qrtr=hard! Am retaking class w/Annen and getting an A (failed last qrtr.) Never again!
This professor, is very complicated. His lectures are usless if you are recording them. Lecture exams are not a,b,or c exams. The labs are a joke, no guidence from this professor at all. It's pretty much teach your self. His ascentis pretty heavey and sometimes hard to undrestand. Take my advice and don't take this professor.
He lectures straight from the book. Attendance is mandatory (for college?!?!) but don't bother trying to listen, just read the text (ALL of it!) Lab is disorganized. He's not clear about expectations of what is due each lab. I can't stand incompetence. If I had the option to wait for Annen to return from sabbatical I would take the class from her
This guy is an idiot! We teach the class better than he does. His PowerPoint slides have incorrect information and his directions are unclear. He is a nice guy, but a terrible teacher.
It just plan awful and if you miss three times your dropped. He lectures from the start and even goes over, with useless information. His accent is so thick that half the time your trying to figure out what he saying. Just know the chapter, front to back, detail to deatail.
His exam reviews are a joke, its a test all in its self. He is extremely unorganized, his notes, slides and lectures don't match. And a lot of the notes just don't make sense. Good with dictionary bad with teaching to other people.
Very disorganized which makes the class hard to study for. Hard to understand due to accent.
he was a great instructor! very helpful, with lots of energy. tests were not too hard, he made it seem like it would be so that you study hard, but he is very fair.
Yes, he have an accent, but that won't be the problem if students only read and just follow and listen. He is a good, fair teacher. If many people thinks that he is unorganized, why would they be bothered with it. You are not there to learn how to organize. Just listened, and read the book cause it will help you. College is not a spoon feed level o
Don't listen to other peoples bad comment on this teacher. I didn't and I told them that I will see it myself, and I did see that accent and being unorganized is not the issue to get a good grade. You also have to work hard to get good grades. Don't be bother with the accent, just listen, learn, and read, and not criticize.
This is my third and last A and P class, and Sengupta is the best one! He really goes out of his way to help students understand the material. I am a native english speaker and didnt not find his accent difficult to understand, neither did I find him disorganized. I highly recommend this professor =)
AVOID!!!! Don't get me wrong he is a very nice person, however his class is disorganized, boring and his office hours were not helpful. His test are hard to gauge and the last lab test is cumulative
very good
pls dont give lame excuses about strong accent. i missed 3 lecture classes, still got a A grade. i would suggest you to take ur 40 ABC with him for some simple reasons. the total for 40 b was 600, 300 for lecture exam. 150 for labs and 150 for homework which u can easily get it plus has bonus points . just read his notes and a bit of text book.
sengupta is a great teacher, very helpful. he will post the class material on the website, what ill suggest u is to read his notes and pls do refer the textbook as well. if u dont understand any aspect of the subject pls do meet him. he ll make sure that understand everything.
It is not impossible to get an A in his class. But you need to study very hard. The Lab final is too long. Study, study and study. You will pass this class with the grade you want!
Dr. Sengupta is a wonderful professor. He's very brillient. Even though he has accent, I'm an ESL student, still understand his lectures well. He has a great teaching passion and was easy too. All you need to do is to read the book carefully and try to memorize as much as you can, then you'll do well. Finally an A+ for him.
You will love him after you take his class. You will realize that he's much more better than the other teachers. He's funny, especially he's very smart. He loves teaching and always willing to help you. The only that he wants from his students is their success. He fells happy when students are happy. He builds extra credits on tests to help you too
He is a very nice man but that is about it. I had Annen for previous classes and was very disappointed by this teacher. He basically just hands out info and doesn't go over it with the entire class so everyone is trying to get his attention individually. He is hard to understand and VERY DISORGANIZED! He even made a girl in class cry. STAY AWAY!
From reading the comments, I guess he OK at teaching Bio 40A/B, But DO NOT take him for Bio 40C!! There alot you have to learn in 40C and hes is reall really bad at teaching it. He read straight off his handouts and his accent is hard to understand. I don't know how his test are cuz I haven't taken it yet, but so far it been a nightmare!
This prof means well. He is excited about the subject which helps a lot. The Lab practicals were EASY and the tests fairly easy too. If you want an A just study. I did the minimum and got a high B. I actuallylike him and would take him again.
He is somewhat nice as a person, but I guess that is all. Not a great professor. A little unorganized and unreasonable since he assigns a project VERY briefly on the syllabus but does not explain AT ALL until one week before it's due, and because people keep asking him questions. I personally think that is irresponsible.
If you take him, make sure to go to his office hours. He's not very good at lecturing, but I think he's great when it's one or two people asking him stuff. He's a nice guy, but he's hard to understand, and his class really feels like an elementary school level rather than college. Expect to stay the whole lab period every lab. Tests are okay.
I enjoyed this professor. It is clear that he loves his job and the subject matter. He is always willing to stay afterward in class to answer any questions you may have. Very easy to talk to. Students who were irritated with him were usually lazy students who were hoping for an easy A. He does tend to call you out if you were one of those students.
He's my favorite teacher! his lecture was helpful for me, and quiz and exams were on the text book. If you study hard with his hand out and text book, you'll get good grade. Also he gave us study guide, it's really useful for exam.
Inspirational. Extremely knowledgeable, motivated, well organized, and passionate about biology. He does impart some speech inflection but it is pretty easy to understand after a class or two (we are college students after all). Being taught by a competent instructor is a pleasure.
4 Quizzes, @ midterms, 1 lab final and 1 lecture final - no notes. Exams are hard if you don't study, but he's entertaining. He will ALWAYS help you, super nice and knows what he is talking about. I would take his class again.
I took Sengupta for Bio 40A and Bio 40B. He is one of the best professors I have ever had and I would definitely recommend him. His lectures are interesting, he explains everything very well and he is very knowledgeable. His tests are medium hard but as long as you take notes and study his lecture notes in detail, you will do well.
Passionate, engaging, humorous, and encouraging! He wants you to succeed and is passionate about helping you do it. Talk to him and get to know him, it helps :)75pts x 2 exams, final 150 cumulative. 1 lab, 1 final lab is cumulative. Exams were pretty easy if you study. Use your book! He is the best just like everyone said :) Good Luck
He isn't a good teacher even though he is nice and knowledgeable. His lecture is disorganized. He only speaks to his favorites during class.Other students are out of his sight. He has a thick accent and foreign students can't get what he speaks. So, many students have already dropped his class.
he is an OK teacher, but he likes splitting hairs. you have to read the entire text every corner and memorize all words in the book even though they aren't in boldface. maybe he has a good personality...but i don't like his attitude because he shows partiality all the time. miserable if you aren't his favorite...
Sengupta is probably the most passionate teacher I've had so far. Any complainers are just lazy. His tests are actually the easiest out of all my science classes IF YOU STUDY (If you don't, then obviously there harder). My advice: over-study for the test and stay with the class as far as reading goes because he usually gives quizes every lab.
If you like memorizing, take his class. Or you can try to be his favorite, you'll be comfortable with him. Have a fun!
soooo HORRIBLE i didn't know there are only 4~5 students in class most students are ignored some students who are treated well ask personal questions like "i have vision problems...""my mother said...""my contact lens.." please don't hinder lecture go to see a Dr his lecture is useless, so ONLY THE TEXT IS YOUR TEACHER OR FRIEND!
I guess I'm considered one of the "favorites". In order to learn and do well in a class, participation and showing interest is a must. Don't sit in the back row, not engage in lecture and expect to get noticed (or more importantly comprehend the material). I get good grades because I do the reading, participate and do a thorough job in class work.
On another note, Sengupta is extremely helpful and will keep explaining things until you understand. Exams are quite difficult so be sure to keep up with the reading, take notes and come to class. He does have a thick accent but you get used to it. Ask questions if you don't understand something because that's what makes or breaks your grade.
Awesome teacher. Easy A if you study. You will absolutely learn a lot of things from his class. He's funny but sometimes he's strict because he cares for each of his students, and wants his students to learn and be successful in the future. You should take his class. I recommended him.
Seriously the best teacher i've ever had. He truly cares for all his students. I wish I could take him for 40C. Highly recommended!
Seriously the best teacher i've ever had. He truly cares for all his students. I wish I could take him for 40C. Highly recommended!
This professor is so excited about teaching! Anyone who rates him low is lazy, he will help you no matter what. I'm not even in his class anymore and he is tutoring me for the next section. One time I thought a question was unfair on a quiz and in a snap he made the quiz out of only 9, instead of 10. HE IS ON YOUR SIDE!!! BEST TEACHER EVER!
Sengupta is very helpful. and a nice teacher..Pay attentive in class and read the textbook and you will get a good grade.I took him during the summer and I got an A.
The best biology instructor in De Anza college. He is very knowledgeable, committed and approachable.I highly recommend him especially for the ones who really want to learn.
He likes to answer any questions you might have. He's pretty enthusiastic about biology. As long as you pay attention during his lecture, you'll do well on his tests.
He is the worst teacher. He has mood swings. One second hes really happy and the next hes not.He is not clear of what he wants and expects the world from his students. I would not recommend.Take Schinske if you can.
His lecture slides are very unclear and unorganized. You must read the book to decipher his lectures. I am not a lazy student but it extremely hard to understand his lectures. He asked too much of his students for them to succeed in biology in one semester. He has mood swings too. He'll be happy one second than pissed off the next.
this instructor is very helpful and knowledgeable. if you want to actually learn A&P and not just slide by with a grade take him. the health care field needs knowledgeable people not lazy ignorant ones.
One of the worst professors that I have encountered. His lectures are all over the places and he loves to get sidetracked and talk about irrelevant information for hours on end. His labs are the worst. He expects you finish a whole packet of busy work while he lectures IN LAB about irrelevant stuff. Donâ??t take him.
Sengupta is good teacher but you really have to participate and go to class on time to get a good grade. At first he seems very hard but slowly you get used to his teaching. He is very knowlegable. The class consists of 2 lab exams 3lectures, a presentation, numerous quizzes and lab assignment. Be ready to give time to his class.
No matter what teacher you take, Anatomy/Physiology is going to be an extremely hard class. After 3 other teachers, he was by far the most helpful and caring. Unlike other teachers, he is there to make you learn and challenge yourself. The medical field needs people who are willing to go through that.
Biology 40 series are hard enough as it is but he makes it bearable and easy to understand. One of the most knowledgeable and caring teachers. He is a little intimidating at first but as the quarter goes on hes more and more helpful. Out of the 3 classes i remember more from his class. Good teacher, but you still have to put in alot of effort.
best teacher ever. i have taken him for bio 40 B and C. he is very knowledgeable and is very helpful. he actually walks around each table during lab and ask people if they need help. i would totally take him again if he was teaching bio 45 or 26. take him...
best teacher everrrr...please take him. come to class, follow his lecture slides, show that you are putting effort and you will pass his class. he is very helpful and very knowledgeable. take him.
he cares about his students. but he kinda has swing mood.
very helpful. He really goes into detail
LOVE. very nice teacher that has convos with you, very funny and friendly, always smiling, very interesting, friendly,so helpful, and very open to hearing/asnwering questions or assumptions. I got an A but i had to study and work for it. 2 midterms, barely hw, and final with repeat questions.dont fall asleep, be late everday, or use ur phone.
First of all, he is very nice and intelligent but he Will not answer questions without going off tangent and is definitely not clear with what he wants you to know for quizes and exams. His philosophy is no matter how bad the teacher is, you must learn on your own. so be prepared to teach yourself. Read textbook and visit office hours.
He is very nice and easy. Read his power point, especially clinical connection parts, ask questions, and attend the labs. Tests will cover many points in textbook, but many students do not really like reading them. If you are not interested in reading the whole chapter, focus on his power point.
Very kind teacher :) But.. Lecture: Everything is based on his power points so write down all of his notes. He doesn't emphasise on what you exactly need to know for the exams. "I'm here to facilitate your learning not teach you how to do the exam" Lab: Be ready to memorize 200+ bones & 80+ muscles and their functions and many scientific terms.
He was clear in his lectures and very helpful during lab. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to understand the material. I thought the material was pretty easy to understand; it's just a matter of committing it to memory. He's also pretty funny when you talk to him. Best biol professor imo.
He has a PhD in genetics but assumes you should know half of what is being taught. Gets upset if you don't understand the concept and will point it out and make you feel dumb (blames you on not being prepared for class). Writes a lot so write everything down and read the book because he will not tell you whats on the tests. Memorize everything.!
Lots of materials to be cover in his class. Don't take him unless you want your GPA to be lowered. He expects a lot out of his students & he will put you on the spot when he wants to. You have to read the textbook outside of class because his lectures are very unorganized & hard to follow. You have to memorize everything in labs & lectures.
One of the best teachers I've ever had for any subject. Easy to communicate with and really cares about his students. Use his study guides and you'll pass his tests. Pay attention in labs because he always has quizzes. Overall very clear teaching style and great teacher.
He is very clear about what will be on tests and quizzes and he has study guides to help you with the tests. He is very helpful during office hours and will tell you if you will pass or not. Be sure to read the textbook because he expects you to come into class knowing what was covered in the chapter. Very dedicated and not bad looking either.
Worst teacher. Makes you feel dumb for answering wrong. States "omg I'm teaching A&P not chemistry". Lectures are unorganized and expects you to learn on your own.
It was very difficult for me to get engaged with this class, I dont know if its the fact that its biology, or that the professor never really engaged with us. Directions were hard to understand, and the tests were very difficult
Avoid this teacher. Look for the negative reviews and it is self explanatory. Unorganized, Confusing, Unable to Answer Questions clearly, and Grades papers very late. Lecture and Lab Tests are cumulative. If he didn't make it mandatory to come to class, I would have preferred studying at home.
Good teacher, but has intense mood swings. He will be fine one moment and starts to get mad and yell for the smallest things.
Great prof! Take Bio series with him and you won't regret it! Study his check understandings and you will do fine. Very reasonable man.
Helps you succeed in class
