Worse Professor I have very had. Terrible accent can not understand her. Does not explain material if there are questions because she doesnt understand some of our questions. Tests are tricky with mutiple choice. Just terrible experience. I hated it!!!
Maybe she should be taking an English class instead of teaching a Finance class. :-(

Well, What you heard is actually right, but to be honest if you read the book, no trouble getting at least a B. She gives huge curves though...midterm we got 23 point curve but it shows how hard her midterms can be. BUY FIN CALCULATOR!HP good for exams!!
She does not explain the material, but if you read the book and do h/w problems you'll get an A.
NOt a good teacher at all. Can not understand what she is saying. Worst Teacher (even though i'm getting an A). You have to literally teach yourself. BUY THE BOOK and STUDY hard! only way to pass
she is hard to understand butif you know the excersices and the slides you have an A
She is hard to understand but we are a diverse school!!(duh) If you do the homework problems you will be find. She does try to be helpful give her a chance.
has an accent...if you anticipate problems with that don't take this class, however if you are open minded, take the class...review the powerpoint slides and do the homework = "A"
I think she is a really intellegent teacher but cannot really express. However like the ratings says i dont think she is that bad. I got an A in this class and did not study too much. If you do Homework problems and practise her slides you should be fine
Hard to understand- when trying to learn theory that can be a BIG problem! I ended up with an A because of the HUGE curve she had, but as said that shows how badly people did-- take someone else if you can and buy a fin. calc. it'll save your but!
She is difficult to understand. However, I got an A becasue of the huge curve. The class went from 30 to 13 after the first test. If you study hard, you can pass.
Horrible!! She does not explain well at all. She goes through 2 chapters in one class session. She's new.
She konw her stuff, but when you ask her to explain something she does not do a goo job. Her voice is really soft,n hardly hear her half the time in class. If you want to pass, you really have to understand the formula and concepts and do homework.
She SPEAKS NO ENGLISH!!!FOB...Looks petrified when she teaches and has to curve the class by 20 points in order for students to pass...avoid this teacher!!!
She does try hard to help, but unfortunately that is not good enough. FIN majors, I would suggest taking someone else because you REALLY won't take anything from this class- she is very hard to understand so learning concepts doesn't really work.
She has a real bad accent to hard to understand. But if you just need to get Finance 310 out of the way, and can apply yourself a little bit, you can easily pull off a B. She curves everything, so non-finance majors, its a guaranteed pass.
If you really want to learn finance, take someone else. She knows it, but she can't explain it, and it has nothing to do with her accent. Because you can catch on to it. Book is not very helpful either.
Knows material very well, cannot teach it to save her life! Tests not difficult if you study, gives prcatice exams and huge curves
She is a fine teacher. If you go to class and pay attention, you will do fine. Most people leave early or don't pay attention. I did and I got a good grade.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! She is clearly knowledgable but can not put it into simple terms for college students to understand. Practice the homework problems and truly understand the concepts if you want to do well in class.
she built up my foundation for finance and I have been doing well in this area. she has bad accent but understanable. The best suggestion I can give you for this class is to prep your algebra before you take it.
She knows a ton about this subject. Most students give her a hard time about her accent, because they dont understand Finance. It takes time. She is smart and will meet with her students anytime.
Horrible!!!
Can not understand half of the things that come out of her mouth. Provides little to no examples of problem solutions. All-in-all the worst teacher I have had at DePaul. And i'm a junior.
She is a great teacher. She has a passion and a technique to teach you Finance even if you do not know how to count 2+2. If you do homework you will be fine. She has a little accent (she knows that) and because of that she speaks slowly and everything is even easier to understand.
It is very difficult to understand her. She is not good at answering questions and does not have a lot of patience. I do not think teachers with heavy accents should teach, especially subjects that are number intensive. She make the class stay always to 9:00 PM and we never left earlier than 8:55.
If youre unfortunate enough to take her, make sure to copy all the problem solutions from class and study them. Know the major concepts for the multiple choice, and study ALL of the homework problems for each test. I did all this, and I hate finance but still got an A-.
I was scared of finance. But if actually try to do the homework and know how to use your calculator you'll be fine. She would help if you need it. Tests and homework not bad.Hard to understand b/c of accent. Finance tutor sucks in office and they had this professor.SHE CURVES like CRAZYYYYY.NICE LADY
Great professor! Doesn't care if you leave early. Gives a practice exam one week before the actual exam. Only people who do absolutely nothing will get a C. She really lectures to make sure u understand the problems and concepts. I got an -A.
Dr. Lim is very helpful and a good teacher. She is not easy but she gives you the practice exam a week before the actual test and goes over it in class. If you do not understand her because of the accent, she writes everything in powerpoint and posts it on blackboard word for word.
Sonya is great teacher in the making. She likes what she does and doesn't stress out her students. You can get accustomed to her accent - if not, that simply means you're not listening. Good way to start your Finance major/minor
If you want to learn a different language take this class. She can help you learn Korean. As far as Fin. is concerned. She knows her stuff, but i just never understood her. So i dont recommend her for sh*t!!
AUWFUL!! seriously, one of the most difficult ppl to understand. not only does she have a thick accent, she mumbles and is a soft talker. i barely went to class and did ok, bc she does not help you understand anything. never curves anything. just plain pointless class
I didn't know DePaul offered finance classes in Japanese, had I known I would have chosen a different professor. If you speak Japanese take this class.

Before I started the quarter I was so scared about her class cuz of student's comments I got an A- in the class. 3 exams, hw, and attendance. The hw helps boost ur grade. You don't really understand her at first but you get used to it, she puts all her notes blackboard and gives practice exams a week before the final.

She is not as bad as people say she is. Even though it is a little difficult to understand her at first, you adjust. Besides, the practice exams she gives are VERY similar to the actual tests. if you know how to work out the practice problems, you should be able to get an A on all three exams.
SHE DOES ALOT TO HELP STUDENTS. Okay so she doesn't know english very well but thats really her own downfall if you email her with a question she'll help you just pay attention in class and stop blaming your bad grades on someone else.
Honestly, I did not do so well on the first test so, I dropped it. This class is just too much work and on top of that she wants you to think, hard. Take this class by itself and hybernate in a cave. She speaks english well.
I think she's a good teacher. She knows her stuff and she takes you through step by step. the book doesn't help much, nor do her slides so I suggest going to class. Her english is not as bad as what the ignorant, spoiled non-cultured people say. This is college, stop whining! email her, she'll help you 1-on-1 if you need it.
only someone who's either out of their mind or downright dumb can give Lim 2 on easiness. her exam problems are the same as those we do in class (she just changes the numbers); how easy is that? her english is fine, and she's always willing to help. i'm absolutely amazed that people complain so much about her...
Great professor. Very clear, goes over the problems step by step. The exams consist of the problems that were done in class, she just changes the numbers. There is nothing wrong with her english, she just has an accent. I cannot believe people would compain about her. The class requires some work (surprise), so how you do is entirely up to you
Its a good class, not great. Doesn't really explain why this is important. Its just learn this formula and plug numbers in. She does have an accent, but its understandable. Reveiw problems are almost the same on the test.
She is not bad of teacher. Her test are over the review problems. She has a accent, so pay atten well. Also she is better than Houston!!
I don't know why people complain so much about her. The class was not that hard. She does have an accent but all you need to do is take good notes and go over the problems she assigns. If you do that then u wont have any problem getting atleast a C in the class.
Nice professor...not hard to get a C. She is simply and to the point...take notes and study and you should be fine. I recommend her for 311!
She's not perdect BUT HOuston is the devil so take her for 311!!!!!!!!
i had Lim for 310 and I thought she did a great job explaining the material. i took her for 311 too, and i have to say i was disappointed. keep in mind that there's much more theory in 311 than in 310, and for some reason Lim is not that good at teaching "concepts". midterm/final/attendance
Pretty good, people hate on her too much. If you take notes and look through the book, the class is easy. All the problems on the tests are ones she has gone over already in class. the tests are not bad at all.
She is a pretty good teacher considering the extremly boring and dry subject matter.I definitely don't agree with the comment that the actual exams are based off of what she goes over on study exams and stuff like that. She will occ. throw a curveball. H/W is harder than tests - but that's good b/c it prepares and isn't has highly weighted.
THE PROFESSOR IS AWESOME.. SHE'S GREAT.. BEST FIN. 311 TEACHER.. TRUST ME ON THAT.. MID-TERM AND FINAL WERE SIMILAR TO THE REVIEW SHE GAVE US 1 WEEK AHEAD OF TIME.. G'LUCK
She is not great, but she is not bad. A lot of people on this site are saying that the mid-term and final are EXACTLY from the study guides and h.w. I just took her over the spring and let me just say that is NOT TRUE. I think she has changed her teaching styles, only like 2 of the problems from the study guide were on the exams.
She is not as bad as people make her. Just go to her class take notes, and her midterm and final are similar to her study sheet. She is not bad at all
Some of her test questions are from the review sheets, but many are not. So you need to do more than just studying the review sheets to pass.
Lim does her job really well as a professor. Her lectures are detailed and she tried really hard to explain everything thoroughly. Gives homework that is challenging but prepares you for the exams. Practice exams help. Grade is based on 3 exams which means you need to study. Avaliable for outside help. Overall, take her if you are willing to work
She wants everyone to know their stuff. She gives really thorough power point slides and she tries to integrate the class into the outside world by showing mini video clips. Overall, she's a good professor.
How to get an A: Don't buy the book, just go to class and listen. She gives about 5-7 homework questions each day. Do them because she might call on you for the answer. She likes to call on people she knows are frequently absent/don't do the HW. Finally, she gives review guides for each exam. Know these and you'll do well and LEARN A LOT!
I'm not sure why DePaul has decided to use a non-english speaking professor for a such an important course. That said, she does not know how to teach. She kinda has an attitude and enjoys playing the 'tough' professor role. Her exams are 'tricky' because she does not know how to write exam questions in english.
Did not like this class at all. She was very unclear when trying to explain the material. I had to learn everything on my own!
She explains the material very clearly, and is willing to help outside class. The course requires a lot of work, but you will learn a lot at the end.
very hard to understand so just be ready to read the whole book. Exams are not easy at all.
Why is "Hard" aligned in survey w/ "Useless" and "Incomprehensible"? Grad school costs $$$ so Hard is good, otherwise time and money is wasted. As pointed out in other ratings, Dr. Lim has an accent. I did not find this distracting in the least. She also knows the material cold and works hard to elevate your knowledge during the course.
The accent is something you can eventually catch on to, but it may be a lil hard in the beginning. Also, she has a huge attitude problem. I emailed her asking her for help and her response was useless. I guess u can take her, but beware, her exams are tricky. She'll always pull something on u. Just pay close attention & have a friend to study with!
Heavy accent. Hard to understand her and not so clear on what she teaches. Suspecious and her exams are hard.
She is very hard to understand but the material is not that bad if you are willing to look at it outside of class. Most of the exams are based from HW problems, review, and powerpoints so not so bad.
Behavioral Finance special topic course in the Spring. It was the first time the course was taught and the class consisted of a trading proposal, test in week 8, and participation. if you have an interest in the subject take the class. All the talk about her accent almost made me not take the class. it wasn't bad at all. very accessible great class
Great professor! Exams are on Review packet and in-class problems. Take this class!
Prof Lim definitely deserves a better rating. If you actually care to learn finance and take the class seriously, then you will have no problem with the material. Her tests are fair given that you study and stay on track of the material. also, she is very knowledgeable about the subject. if you want to learn, take the class! ps accent is decent
I don't know why people are such bothered by the accent. If you take your time to review her powerpoint slides and exam packets, you'll Ace this course no sweat... <_<
This teacher deserves a lot better of rating. Honestly, this was the easiest math based class I've had at DePaul, really helpful and informational
Professor Lim is a really nice lady and she is helpful. She makes the class easy and her grading system is easy. It's really easy to get an A
Really great professor ( after you get used to her accent which will take a class or two) 2 midterms 1 final just do the packets she gives out try to take notes and congrats you got an easy A. Tests are all based on the HW and packets. Book is not needed
She is clear and good at explaining the material but also somewhat dry. The class is pretty easy if you do the work. Something like 5 HWs and 3 Tests. Attendance is checked every time.
I absolutely love professor Lim. Something about her. Class is easy as long as you pay attention. You get a formula sheet for tests which is the bomb.
Her accent makes it harder for you to pay attention. Her exams are SO hard. She tries to be sneaky by putting hard problems, oh and the multiple choice is impossible. Read the book and practice a lot.
She is hard to understand because of her accent. I went to tutoring for help. Test are difficult if you don't study. My average grade on tests was a B. She allows 1 page notes on test. There is homework that is completed online. I only used the book for extra help to study. She gives powerpoint lectures.
Professor Lim deserves a much higher rating. Her lectures and notes are extremely organized, crystal clear, and consistent. All her exam questions are very similar to the problems covered in lecture and the hw sets. Do the hw and pay attention to how she sets up problems in class. Textbook is irrelevant. Use her d2l notes (print out before class)
Take her! Her lectures are very clear and she gives you everything you need to know for the exams. Do the homework and the in class examples and you will be just fine!
TAKE HER FOR 330! Anyone who gives Sonya Lim a bad rating is probably just bad at Finance. She is crystal clear, and does everything possible to set you up at success in the course. Weekly homework, weekly quizzes that are just like the homework that she goes over in detail after grading. You also get a formula sheet on the quizzes, an entire page!
