EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEf, you caaaaaaan staaaaaaaaaaaand his veeeeeeeery sllllllllooooow sppeeeeeeeech, and prooonounccccccciiationnnns, you'll get along fine. His tests are tough however. Meeester Mendez, you're late again! Baaaaaht, youre cool.
aaaaannd..... he says and to much, speaks poor english and is a very unfair grader. i recieved a B on every test than a C for a final grade. when i asked him why he said it was b/c i didnt prticipate...thats ludicris. i had perfect attendance.
Challenging classes. If you are a serious student you come away with something. Study and do your work and you will have no problem. Enjoyed his classes and insight.
A big fan of the letter C. Very hard to stay awake never mind try and understand him. Not only is his speaking english horrid, his test are very poorly written and hard to understand at times. He def. should call it quites with this whole teaching thin
Mendez-Mendez rules! I had so much fun in all of his classes. He's really intelligent and funny and a ball to have for a professor. I think some of us need to be a little more understanding about people form other countries...
He would be a really fabulous professor if he didn't show such lack of respect for his students. The guy is funny, informed and very intelligent - and the accent is totally not an issue - but he doesn't make any effort to treat us as anything less than an inconvenience.
He's a very funny guy and talks about himself for most of the class but when it comes to the tests it is a rarity for someone to get an A. His tests contain grammatical errors as well as trick questions. He also does not give extra credit.
Such an easy class! All you ever have to do is show up & take notes. Obviously, the man knows what he's doing & he loves it. Don't think to skip b/c it's a lecture hall. If you skip, you're out of luck b/c he takes attendance!

Tests were confusing. Makes you write "grammatically correct" papers, it seemed like an English class to me. I got a "B" when I asked him why, he said, "Because you got C's on your papers". Did not tell us how we did in our first test or paper until after the 2nd paper was turned-in.
I have had Prof Mendez several times. Each time he has been fantastic. He sometimes takes a little too long to return work and misses a class every once and a while. But overall, he is brilliant and interesting and he tells great stories. A great person too.
Worse class... i got an A- but still wonder how could students put up with him (arrogance, english accent, and of most importance, the way he looks like he couldn't care less.)

Very hard class, very boring. Teacher is nice but hard to understand his accent.

easy class if you do your work, misses a lot of classes so he gave take homes, is very repetitive and boring, says "ANDDDDDDDDDD" like 100-200 times a class which will drive you crazy...but a easy class if you work
brilliant man, mediocre teacher. i honestly think he was bored teaching class half the time.
I really feel bad for any other the professors under his watch and any oof the students who have to take him. He is not interested in the well being of the students and is completly unwilling to help. It wasn't until I went above him that I got any help on questions that he should answer! This guy is awful and needs to go. Get him out of here!
Mendez is a tough ass grader but he is brilliant.
Students in this postings are lazy. Mendez is one of the toughest professors that I have had but I found him approachable, sensitive and usefulness. One problem with him is that he doesn't suffer fools easily. He is very self assured of himself which some people find arrogant. I will take him again anytime.

Good teacher... does say AND!!!! alot... lol... really cool guy, a little freaky, but mostly due to his metro-sexual attributes...
If you show ANY intellectual weakness at all, he dismisses you ANNNNND quick. It's been five years since I took this class and I remember him being a tough ass at first then he calmed down. Being older than the rest of the class, he didn't pick on me much. Having a sense of humor definitely helped.
This professor should not be teaching. He could care less about his students, only offers tests online which he constantly screws up and the tests have questions on them that are nowhere in lecture notes OR the book. I thought I was doing really well and learned all the information I needed to, but I ended up with a C+ because of his horrible tests
This guy is the most unorganized and non helping prof ever! Never help people who needed it. Only gave us one grade through out the sem which was the midterm. other than that u dont know wut u got on any assignments. I think he bases grades on personality of students. He is def bias towards students. Dont take him unless u want a wildcard as a gr.
Easiest class ever. Watched Pulp Fiction/Magnificent 7 and wrote a paper on each. Multiple choice tests. Not much help as a professor, but you shouldn't need it. Overall a cool guy.. so nice, they named him twice.
GREEATTTTTTTT PROF... if you like sending e-mails without getting responses, printing out ridiculous amounts of crap to read, and taking tests that are based on absolutely nothing. if you can't make his office hours, don't bother trying to get help, and if you DO get ahold of him, expect one word answers. take him for an added dose of stress.
Mendez is pointless, you can hardly understand him, and when you do, he's condescending and rude. all his tests are online and have hardly any of the information from the lectures or books. if you want a headache take his class. If it wasn't for his teacher aid, he'd be unbearable.
hated this teacher. his accent was very difficult to understand. i studied reallllyyyyy hard for his tests and i got 2 D's so i withdrew. the only grades in that class are a couple of tests so it's really hard to do well. you loose like a whole letter grade by missing a few classes. just overall a ridiculous class. don't take him
i took this class in a 200 person lecture. all his tests are online. only like 4 grades for the whole class and they are all tests which are impossible. i got a D on the first 2 and decided to drop the class. you can barely understand the way he speaks. he's the head of the communications dept and really just should not be a professor
Speaks broken english, which means his impossible online tests are written in broken english, all the questions are vague..just hard in general, and that's your whole grade so if you mess up 1 or 2 you're screwed, don't take him
Do not take this class with this prof. He is very hard to understand, does not get back to any questions that you may have via email. He is rude and his exams are horrible. they dont even make sense. you can study all day and still not get a good grade. Make sure you go over your exam after to see if u were marked wrong on a question that was right
Worst class I've ever taken. DO NOT TAKE!
I figured out that as long as you read the book and take strict notes, you will be ok and do well in this class. It was hard at the beginning, but then you get used to the exams. He is however very hard to understand and doesn't care about you as an individual.
I loved the professor. He is tough and has an accent but I learned a lot.
I like Dr. Mendez alot. He is a cool guy if you get to know him. I took him Fall 09. I got the flu midway through the semester and he met with me to ensure that I was caught up on everything. If you participate in class and talk to him you will do well.
I do not recommend his mass comm online class! He gives over 100 questions on each quiz and barely enough time is alloted to finish. Some of the questions are also pretty unclear. He is not very helpful when approached with questions on the quizzes as well. Overall one of the worst professors I've had at CCSU to date.
I disagree with the raters. He is a very tough professors that has high expectations. If you show him interest, he will work with you. If you miss classes, he will penalize you.
Just finished his class this summer online. It bothers me that people who have him face to face complain about his accent. He was a great professor. His class on convergent media opened a new world to me. I am dying to have him in a face to face environment. I hear people at Central call him the Man in Black.
Take the course online if you can, he is one of the most insufferable professors I've ever had. Lets some students off with make-ups and attendance and fails others. I'd avoid making yourself known if you're taking the class in person.
yes, he has an accent. take notes on powerpoint and especially what he says and read chapters. study for tests or you will do bad. hes OK. not the best.
Most insufferable professor I've ever had. Blows through powerpoints. His voice is very annoying. Says a test will have one thing, when it actually has nothing close to what he said it will. Avoid if at all possible.
I had him in Fall '11. He has an accent, but he isn't hard to understand. He is tough, all the tests are online. Had an extra test because the quiz averages were so bad. Study, read power points, and attend class.Had those awful clickers, we had to use them to take quizzes and submit attendance. Simplified class due to weather cancellations.
He can be hard to understand if you're not concentrating on what he's saying. He barely uses the textbook at all. But he curves the hell out of all your exams because he wants everyone to get good grades. I barely paid attention and still got an A-. Acts like he's a tough teacher, but you can tell he knows the material.
Mendez is a very rigorous/tough professor but a kind soul. He has a difficult job with 200 uninterested students in class. I learned a lot in his course. He brought us candy, raffled caps that he knitted and told us many jokes. See him during office hours and you will do do better. Hard exams though.
He can definitely be hard to understand with his accent. The exams are online and are nearly impossible. The notes you take in class barely will help you with the exam. I basically tried to google every question & still couldnt figure out some of the answers. Very strict with attendance and cell phone use but he is overall a nice and funny guy.
He was extremely difficult to understand with his heavy accent. His online tests are very hard and I am not just saying that to complain. I studied my ass off for 2 weeks before the test and it was impossible. I dropped the class because it was really not worth it. I don't recommend taking his class.
I'm surprised at the low rating. He is extremely helpful and understanding to those who put the effort in. He allows ample time for papers, and understands when life gets in the way unexpectedly. Mendez is tough, but that's because he doesn't take BS and expects the best from you. Take him if you want to learn!
He was very easy to understand and he does know his topic very well. All tests were online and no curves for your grades. The only thing i do not like was the fact all the notes and power points i had did not help me on any of the tests, test that should have been easy A's I was getting C-'s on. He is a nice person but i don't recommend the class
Hard to follow what is expected of you for papers. You need to take the initiative and email him, multiple times. He can be hard to understand, as are the assignments. He will not give you what is expected in writing. It is an interesting class, but it's structure needs more work.
This was a photography course so it was fairly simple. The textbook was barely used. It's much easier if you have your own camera so you dont have to borrow one. Mendez is really unreliable when it comes to assignments and test. Constantly changing his mind on when things are due and what the assignments are. If you can deal its a good class.
Very funny guy. Also very strict with attendance and cell phone use. Makes you fill out a waiver saying if he catches you on his phone you fail the class. Exams are online and don't always follow the lectures or the PowerPoints. Class averages were in the 60s and 70s for the exams, and a lot of students are stupid, but exams were difficult.
(Protip: Don't miss a single day of class to get some big extra points for your grade at the end of the semester) Mendez is hilarious, speaks his mind, and is very knowledgeable about communication as a subject. Sit in the front. Trust me. Pay attention and TAKE GOOD NOTES because tests are somewhat hard to study for with BB materials. Good class.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT, take this course with this professor..online or even in general. He is so disorganized and doesn't respond to emails in a timely fashion. Taking the online course is next to impossible to follow because he uses a syllabus from 2 years ago which has all the wrong dates on it. Very unorganized. Would not recommend!
If you want a teacher that you can barely understand no matter how close or far away you sit, Mendez is your guy. If you want a professor who is ten minutes late just about 50% of the time, take this class. This class was awful,& his professionalism is below mediocre, and he is rather ignorant and pretentious towards his students. AVOID, AVIOID!!!!
He's a cool guy and i'd love to be bros with him, but I never want him as a professor again. The class is boring and the tests are extremely difficult. The grammar and spelling on the tests are often poor making questions hard to answer. He will never go out of his way to help a lazy student. If you like getting good grades don't take this class.
HORRIBLE. Avoid him at ALL COSTS. He is extremely rude and disrespectful to this students. His tests are a entirely nonsensical and riddled with grammatical errors making it nearly impossible to earn a decent grade. Blackboard and syllabus are out of order. Doesn't respond to any emails and when he does its no help.
Take this professor if you can care about the class and respect your professors. Thick accent but very clear and concise. He's really funny and knowledgable, and the lectures are really entertaining. No textbook and all the tests are open note with PPT slides made available.
Had him in a class of nearly 200 people so 1 on 1 interaction was impossible as was getting feedback on tests. The class wasn't a great experience as the majority seemed to dislike him and he gave it right back, which I respected.
He outlined his expectations early. Made all the material available. I enjoyed his class - made the material relevant to us today - not imaginary examples. Much more engaged in the class than I thought I was going to be!
I took an online class with him over the summer and it was the absolute worst class ever. He never posted anything he said he was going to post, he changed due dates almost everyday, and I never knew what was going on. It was awful. I do not recommend taking his classes. Awful.
does not help, never answers emails, can't understand
hard class
OK professor, poor setup. It would be better if it was a smaller class. My class has around 150 students and there is no one on one interaction except when he asks questions.
Professor Mendez is a nice guy and genuinely wants to see his students pass. He is there for you if you need him during office hours. He may come off intimidating but is a nice guy outside of class. However, his class is difficult. Only 3 exams, all on BB but they are LONG and HARD. its the end of the semester and I probably have a D+,C- thus far
It is hard to understand his very thick accent at times, but he knows that. I was in a large lecture hall which was an awful experience. No one talked because we were all too nervous to speak in front of 200 people. When I asked him questions directly he would not make eye contact and was extremely rude and passive. Tests are hard.
He isn't a bad guy, just bring a laptop to his lectures and just chug through it and he'll give you a B. He's the type of guy that if you show maturity and respect he's always willing to give it back. Go to his office hours and he'll help you much more than he will in class. Tough accent too!
very hard class
Not one email back ever. No communication, hard to understand, long HARD tests that are made from the book and that's your only means of getting graded. Give me SOMETHING to boost my grade.
I'm a good student and this class was very bad! His tests DO NOT corrilate with his lectures. On the final, he added information from the BONUS exam in which we had the option to take, however never covered in class. Tests are nearly impossible to pass and he is on a power trip.
He gives you a grade with no feedback and he's a very hard grader. He's not clear with his assignments. He does not follow the syllabus and he does things on the fly. He's a horrible teacher and I will never take another class with him again. Avoid taking any of his classes if possible, that includes online too. He doesn't care about his students
Had him for Media Literacy. I loved going to that class. People who had him before said you should avoid his lecture hall classes though. He's more stern. Also, never have your cell phone out. One of my favorite CCSU professors.
Took a mandatory class with him this summer. He was very informative and helpful. The assignments were fun.
I heard such bad things about him but I think he's a good professor. lectures can feel so long. expect tests that you will have to study from the notes you take from class. He has an accent but you can understand him. he does say "ANNNDDD" a lot and adds a T to the end of like every sentence! attendance is mandatory!
Just avoid taking him at all costs. All he does is show you powerpoints with info that is not on his online tests. It's a lecture class so it was tough as it is to pay attention and he did not make it any less boring.
Loved him. Had him in COMM 230 this semester. He is a tough grader but was very nice and understanding to us. He had a horrible accident and still went to class. Never had an issue with his accent.
Attendance is mandatory because if you do not come to class you will be lost when taking the online quizzes he assigns (every weekend) . He mixes things from the book and class lecture onto the quiz. His goes very quick during lectures, but if you go to his office hours, he will try to help you. Skip class and you won't pass.
No that's all simply no, his exams are hard because a good part of them are things he did not teach us, he does not respond to your emails so don't bother. I received the lowest grade in my college career taking his course . If you need to take this class find a different professor
A lot of people have said to avoid his class if you can, but I haven't had the chance to. I don't have issue with his lecture or with his accent, his lecture is actually pretty insightful - what I have issue with is NONE OF THE MATERIAL is ever on the tests. 80% of it just magically appears out of nowhere and can't be found in notes or in the book.
Grade is based off of just tests and the tests don't include the information provided in class or in the book. Difficult to understand. I would not take him again.
Professor Mendez is a nice guy but he only grades his students based off of tests that consist of barely any material that was taught. It is very easy to fail his exams. You won't find the information in your notes or in the book half of the time. I would stay clear of this professor and I would not take him again.
This was, by far, the worst communications class I have ever taken. If you miss more than 3 classes he drops your final grade in the course by a letter grade and will also fail you on the spot if he catches you texting. His lectures are pointless and the tests are the only way to score points and they have nothing to do with his lectures. TERRIBLE.
Mendez's class was terrible, he is awkward when he talks and its difficult to understand. His tests were extremely difficult because only little information that he talked about in class is actually on the test. This was one of the worst teachers I've had in a while, do not take him
DO NOT TAKE!!!! Not a good professor at all. Barley able to understand him and talks the whole class about things that do not matter on the tests. Also, the test have nothing to do with the book or lecture. He does not respond to emails and does not help clarifying things. Just dont take this dude.
Selected only two tags, because I couldn't find "trash" as a description. Worst professor at CCSU of all time. He's the only one who teaches two core courses for Comm, so every Comm major must walk through this hell. Must have short-man syndrome, don't know what his deal is.. but be prepared for a drama queen on a power trip. ABSOLUTE WORST.
This class was required for my major. I would not recommend this professor at all. He is difficult, makes exams full of information we did not go over in class, and overall just horrible. Our class faced many issues, after which he attempted to take away exams promised in the syllabus. This class was a bad experience.
Avoid this professor if you can. Lectures are long and boring, and unrelated to anything on the tests. He doesn't deserve to be working as a professor. Not only have I not learned anything, I have been completely inconvenienced by this class. Finals week has already ended and we have another exam this week at 7 am, after another from 11pm - 2am
Mendez is a great professor people just want things handed out to them. He is caring and drops the lowest grade. He goes above and beyond for students that actually try. Attendance is mandatory and the powerpoints are very useful!
Mendez came off as an okay professor, but as the year went on, things became very confusing and off track. We only had 5 test through the semester, one in particular, 90% of the class failed. Very tough tester, doesn't prep you for test, and I tried multiple times to email him with no response. I don't recommend him, I barely scraped by with credit
His accent sometimes makes it hard to understand. All the material you need to know is given through powerpoints that he shows in class. All his tests are multiple choice but the questions are difficult. He lets you take the exams outside of class wherever you want during that time frame so it's easy to cheat or use your notes.
Being in his class is funny as he is a great storyteller but his workload is absolute ASS. He doesn't teach anything in which I've learned nothing in media literacy and the papers he assigned for him missing a month were absolute garbage. I would have rather had a sub - DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
He is a great person, but if you take his class prepare to learn on your own. Grading is not clear. Work load is too heavy.
Mr. Mendes is an unusual professor. He is extremely knowledgeable of the subject matter. He is super friendly and treats students kindly as long as they respect him. Nevertheless, he doesn't suffer fools easily. He will give you the pink slip if you miss too many classes or challenge his accent.
Professor Mendez is a great professor! I had him during Hurricane Maria, which was tough on him. But he is extremely knowledgable on the subject matter! It may be hard to keep up if you have a hard time understanding his accent.. but that's not a huge deal. Plus he wrote on the board a lot for that reason. He used PPTs and provided the book online
Hard to understand and doesn't lecture well. The only Graded things in the class are tests and you only have the power points to study from with no opportunity's to fix your grade if you don't feel comfortable with your standing.
I took Professor Mendez this Fall and I can tell her was not his usual self. He is a very well respected professor and I enjoy his lectures; but i must admit he was very hard to reach. He does like his students to pass, so he did throw in 2 last exams and dropped the lowest grade. He's pretty chill and he'll help you if you show him you care.
One of the most disorganized professors I've had. He would cancel class almost every week and sometimes he wouldn't even show up. Almost all of the material on the tests we did not go over in class, I feel like I barely learned anything in his class. He will give you an oppourtunity to drop the lowest test grade which was nice.
I would not take Prof. Mendez again. His class was mandatory for my major, but the way he covered the material was awful. Material was hard to find, very disorganized. First test was very easy, the last two were literally on material he never mentioned or included on any presentation. If possible, avoid. If you must take him, make sure you show up.
I am taking his online class and would not take one of his again.l have to take a winter session and he only answers emails during his office hours which are for 2 hours a week. I have yet to have one of my emails answered in full and sometimes it never gets answered. I feel as though he does not care and he does not give any feedback for anything,
His online class this past winter, was a mess. Nothing was organized, emails were ignored and tests were confusing and messy. I would not recommend this class or professor to anyone who has questions to ask . Students were neglected by this professor. All he had to do was answers emails during his 6 office hours.
I have had him for three courses. He is the toughest professor in the department of communication and has complete disdain for fools. He doesn't believe in regurgitating the book for the students. He makes it clear that he is the professor and you are the student. He taught me a lot of discipline.
He is an excellent teacher. Easy to keep up with lectures because despite his accent, he talks pretty slow and will repeat if asked. Tells a lot of stories to keep it interesting. Puts emphasis on persons and theories. No out of class work. He takes attendance. Easy to pass if you take good notes. 4-5 tests. Only grades are on tests.
He is from a different country and has a strong accent. Also if you ask for help he grows very impatient. This class is SO lecture heavy and he's very boring and monotone. He knows what he's talking about but if you have trouble paying attention you won't do well. All of your grade relies on 4 exams worth 50pts each and are biweekly. Exams can be d
Took him online over the summer. Lots of 400 word posts on online discussion board topics (about 13 in all). Bunch of tests which are fairly difficult (look in the glossary of your textbook for keywords, it helps a lot). Setup on Blackboard was very sloppy. I would say take him online if possible, but only take him if absolutely necessary.
Highly unorganized. Was not clear on what the assignments were. Grading unclear and abrupt.
Mendez knows his stuff but he won't compromise standards. While his self assurance can be confused with arrogance, he truly cares. I have never seen a professor with so many shoes, fancy clothes and jewelry.
He is fantastic!
Just a sad and irritable little man. This whole experience was a nightmare, don't bother having anything to do with communications at ccsu. Horrible.
COMM majors: avoid if at all possible. Entire online class is one weekly discussion post based off of poorly scanned, outdated PDF's and 4 short-answer tests. Absolutely no lecture aspect where he actually teaches, yet is available for 6+ hours of "online office hours". Didn't learn a single thing in what could have been a very interesting class.
COMM majors: avoid if at all possible. Entire online class is one weekly discussion post based off of poorly scanned, outdated PDF's and 4 short essays. I was hesitant to take him bc of the reviews but honestly, not bad. Do the discussion post once a week and you'll be fine. Its reading reading heavy but nothing unbearable. The tests are super easy and he's an easy grader (for the most part). Make sure you take notes and keep all your discussion/blog posts. Most are the test questions.
Doesn't respond to emails at all and doesn't factor in technical difficulties.
I took this class as an async.. WORST decision. His material is all over the place and is EXTREMELY confusing. This professor does not respond at all. I would avoid at all costs. I read some of the positive feed back and gave it a chance.... I should have just listened to the majority of the reviews.
Took this class ASYNC, worst mistake ever. To start, the professor has horrible spelling and grammar on blackboard, emails, and tests. says that they check email regularly, but have not even acknowledged let alone responded. The format of the class is whack, basically thrown in the deep end and told to figure it out with little to no guidance.
Dont ignore the bad reviews! I highly recommend NOT taking this professor. His material is all over the place, he has an unclear grading criteria, he NEVER responds to emails, always has typos, misspelled words, and grammatical errors in HIS instructions. If you can avoid taking any class hes teaching I suggest you do that! He just doesnt care.
This will probably be the worst professor you have! He has no structure, is very rude and has no criteria on for his grading. He ghosts your emails and is very nonchalant when you ask for help or questions in person. He seems like he's only doing it for a paycheck and doesn't care. Its like he throws darts at a board to come up with your grade.
