One of the best English teachers I have ever had! I learned so much in her class. She grades hard, but her expectations are always clearly defined. Take her class!
Grades pretty hard, but clearly defines what is expected and anyone should do fine as long as your follow directions. Will take again!
two weeks in, she was driving me and everyone else in the class crazy! she is the HARDEST grader i've EVER had. She never clearly defines what she wants, never gives you a handout etc. Her class feels like a waste of time, ALL you do is papers & everything she tells us she could literally just send in an email. i would NOT take her.. toughh grader
She is not a good teacher at all...Every time i turned in an assignment I wasnt sure what grade I would get because she is never clear on what she wants. Also when i would ask for help she was not very helpful and isnt really available for help outside of the classroom
Awesome teacher! I learned so much this semester!
Terrible teacher, does NOT respect her students and is never definite on how she wants you to answer questions on tests. Says attendance doesn't matter but then uses it against you at the end. Would not take again!
Serena is a really interesting, fun, and engaged professor. You can tell she loves what she does by the way she conducts class. If you pay attention, participate in class, and fulfill her clear guidelines, you will be fine. I learned more about American modernism in the course than ever before and learned to appreciate it. I would reccommend highly
Awesome teacher. Learned a lot but didn't have to devote a ton of time to her class. 3 tests, 1 paper and some easy quizzes (if you read).
She was ok and always answered emails but was unclear about what she wanted.
Very nice and down to earth. goes by the syllabus and isn't bland when she speaks. take papers to the writing center before you turn them in and it's a pretty easy A.
Good teacher yo!
Dr. Blount is really into what she teaches. Unfortunately, the class is incredibly boring, plus mine was at 8:00am. She's pretty lenient, in my opinion, with grading, considering this was an honors course. Just read and show up to class and you'll do fine.
Absolutely AMAZING teacher. I loved her class and am looking forward to taking another one in the future. She makes literature so interesting and enjoyable. I 100% recommend her to anyone. Reading for the class is SO important but she does the best job thoroughly explaining its meaning in class the next day.
Serena Blount is an amazing English teacher. I had her for American Literature part 1 and she managed to make learning about the Puritans fascinating. Any question you have regarding the class she will answer and then some. Make sure you read so you can contribute to class discussion! Easy short answer tests.
She made her expectations clear for the class. While attendance was not mandatory, it was beneficial if one goes to class. She was pleasant, enthusiastic, and helpful. She made herself available to students outside of class. I would definitely recommend her as a professor.
Great teacher, likes class participation. Read the assignments and you will get an A.
Prof. Blount was amazing. Alot of other students complained behind her back about there grades. She was always fair and told you exactly what she wanted. If you need help she was more then happy to help and even would start off you paper. She isn't afraid to tell you something is WRONG. She is a hard grader, but I learned so much in her class.
She is a pretty cool person but she is a tough grader on essays. She tells you exactly what will be on the tests and if you take notes while she lectures you'll do great. Sometimes if no one is participating she gives a quiz over the reading so be sure to read. I would recommend her
She gets really mad if nobody does the extended amount of useless reading.
Great professor, the only one I've had so far that genuinely seems to love what they teach. Lady knows what she's talking about. Fair grading system, no surprises on tests. She makes it clear exactly what she expects from you. She makes me wish I was an English major. This class was definitely a highlight of my undergrad.
Great class, some version of advanced brit lit to 1900
she is a HARD grader. one assignment right after another with little feedback as to what is wrong with the previous essay.
She loves what she teaches. She tells you exactly what to study. Her tests are not hard at all. Just go to class, take notes and you should be fine. I would take her again!
She's a decent teacher, and her class was interesting for the subject matter. But when it comes to grades, she's tough. Extremely so. And I found her a bit condescending sometimes too. Not a favorite of mine.
Prof. Blount is incredibly passionate about the material she teaches, and thus she makes class exponentially more interesting than my American literature classes have been in the past. She is a tough grader but fair. I found the tests easy as long as I studied my notes. Make sure you do the reading, as she gives a lot of quizzes on the reading.
Mrs. Blount is a great English teacher. She is very passionate about the material and clearly communicate what she is looking for in essays. If you are struggling and receive a low first essay grade, go to her for help asap! She gives out good grades to those who truly invest themselves in their work and ask for help when needed!
While attendance wasn't technically mandatory, there are pop quizzes most days class meets, which cannot be made up if you miss them. If you show up to class and take good notes, you will know exactly what is expected on tests. She is very clear with her expectations and very engaging as a teacher. Even at 8am!
She is very mean when asking her for help. She assigns so much readings, papers and has lots of quizzes and three tests. She acts as if we don't have other classes
Easy class (just gotta do the readings so you can keep up and take the quizzes). Very few assignments/essays. She mainly lectures and has some in-depth class discussions but I was sometimes bored. Lovely lady though.
She's a HARD grader and very strict about what she wants. She can be harsh and has no tolerance for slacking. When you ask for help she points out certain problems with ways to fix them. You actually learn how to write each type of essay and how to become a better writer in her class instead of just completing the essays.
Great teacher, tells you almost exactly what she wants in the papers. Not crucial if you miss a few classes (just not a lot). She's nice and wants you to do good. Gives great feedback on papers, never made below a B. If you have questions, email her or go to the writing center (she loves that and will be less harsh grading your paper)
A very intelligent lady, but structures her class and tests in a way that does not value independent analysis. She only wants a very detailed regurgitation of class material, and is not interested in seeing the student develop any analysis skills. Very disappointing, would not recommend.
Didn't enjoy this class. She's not helpful and makes very little connection with her students and thinks her class is the only one you take. Lots of pop-quizzes, and she just reads from the book most of the class and leaves little room for discussion. Only one paper, midterm, final. Makes class harder than it should be, avoid at all costs.
Pop quizzes have vague questions or require details about things mentioned in passing. Reading often doesn't help you pass; Does the bare minimum to answer questions but acts like she helps; If your opinion doesn't match hers, you're wrong. Nevermind you can support your ideas; Destroys the way other UA professors taught you to write; Harsh grader
If you don't read, you fail. Simple as that. She failed everyone on our first exam and we were all confused as heck. Doesn't really take the time to meet with you if you have questions either. But MAKE SURE YOU READ and understand the material. If you don't your screwed.
She takes roll every class (and absences will kill you). She gives many random pop quizzes, and they're generally easy (if you read the passage). Her lectures are VERY HELPFUL. She gives you word for word what she is expecting on her exams... SO PAY ATTENTION. Take many notes and do the reading you will do fine!
Love her! Taking her again next semester. Very clear on what is expected. She also makes reading boring literature hilarious and interesting. Very reasonable. She'll also tell you exactly what shes looking for on the review days. If you read and pay attention in class this class will be a breeze. She gives random quizzes on the reading occasionally
She is an incredible teacher! She teaches and tells you exactly what is going to be on the test, and they are a breeze! Go to class and make sure to read for the quizzes and you are basically guaranteed an A! Taking her again next semester!
I absolutely love Serena! I've had her twice, first for 219 and this semester for 220, and she is a great teacher. She knows the material that she teaches so well, and she lectures in a way that helps you retain the material and understand the larger, more abstract themes present in the texts that you are reading. Makes you work for the A though.
I loved Serena! She was so knowledgeable about American history and the associated literature. I always enjoyed her lectures. Be sure to do the reading and participate in class
Had her for EN101 and the class wasn't too bad. Gives good feedback and helps you to get good grades on the papers. Have to read sometimes but never a lot and the only grades you get are on the rough drafts, outlines, and final draft. Really nice and pretty funny. Takes attendance everyday. Would take again
I took her for ENG101 and I never made above a C+ on my papers. She was a very tough grader. She took attendance every class. She was pretty funny and made class interesting. She really cared about us and tried hard to make sure we did well. I for sure would take her class again.
If you read the material, go to class, and take quality notes you should be fine. She gives pop quizzes over the readings quite often. Serena is really funny and relates boring literature to everyday life now, which makes it easy to understand. Tells you word for word what will be on tests. I can't stress enough, you HAVE to read for this class!!
I took her for ENG101 and I never made above an C+ on my papers. She was a very tough grader but you can still pass her class with a B if you make A's on all of the minor assignments she gives. If she assigns readings for class make sure you read them because you might get a pop quiz. She took attendance every class.
She keeps class interesting, keeping it very conversation oriented with her students. She doesn't really give specifics about what will be on her quizzes though, so that makes things a little difficult. You will have to read a lot, and if you don't, you won't have any idea what's going on in class. But the readings aren't ever too long or crazy.
Personally I would not take a class with Serena again. She is very knowledgeable about American History in terms of literature, but I find her tests to be nearly impossible. Not enough time to complete the tests with the in depth answers she wants. My essays were the only things that sort of saved my grade. You definitely need to do the reading.
Overall a good professor. She gives 4 essays for the semester, and gives pop quizzes on the reading material, when you least expect it so you need to read. She is a tough grader when it comes to essays but gives good feedback, and likes when you go to office hours or writing center for writing help. Would take her class again.
She is a good teacher, but her tests are all open ended and she is a really harsh grader. You have to read the textbook before every class (some selections are SO long and boring) because she gives lots of pop quizzes. She does a review before exams which are helpful. You have to go to class b/c you are tested solely on notes from her lectures.
Reading quizzes count for a lot. Read and then read SparkNotes to understand/remember names. Interesting class and lecturer so not bad to sit through. ALWAYS GO ON REVIEW DAYS. She wants you to write on her open-ended questions EXACTLY what she says. The class is do-able if you put in an effort.
Serena is incredibly smart, and it shows. Her lectures are engaging and often funny, and she's really open to hearing student opinions/interpretations. She is a hard grader, though, and doesn't offer any extra credit. She's really nice one-on-one and is helpful if you're struggling w/ the readings or the paper(s).
She. Is. The. Worst. Extremely annoying voice first of all which makes it difficult to listen, and she grades like she enjoys failing people. If she asks for 3-4 sentences, make sure you put 8-12, because otherwise she'll say you didn't give enough evidence. Going to her class is a complete drag, and I encourage you to take anyone but her.
THE WORST
Everything you need to know for the tests in this class comes directly from lecture about reading sections. Reading is really important and has to be done by each class, but you can slide by without reading if you pay attention in lecture. GO TO TEST REVIEWS + take good notes. Lots of pop quizzes. Overall an interesting speaker and good professor.
Dr. Blount is very knowledgeable about the content unlike some professors that just read straight from the textbook. She is a very harsh grader and can be a bit condescending in class discussion, but if you do the readings and put in enough effort you will be fine. Her courses are difficult but she does want her students to succeed and do well.
Couldn't stand her at the beginning, but grew to love her. Her lectures are always funny and unexpected. Very manageable to get a good grade, but you have to work for it. Takes attendance every class and gives pop quizzes so MAKE SURE YOU READ. Read closely because her questions are specific. Show up for test review days and you'll do fine!
Be ready to read plus quizzes every class but the quiz grades could make or break your grade. She only gave three test but you have to do good on the m
I LOVE her!! she is super cool but she does not cancel class. if she give you a reading assignment just read it. Its not hard reading it is just stories. Her grading on papers are a little tough but she makes class interesting! She is very engaged with her students. 9/10 would recommend
Blount is great. She has good insight, making it easy to write papers. There are reading quizzes but she drops 3 if I remember correctly. She asks if you want a quiz so she's understanding. If you read/go to class, you'll do well. Ask what she expects on tests since they are short answer format. Be in depth so she knows you read and you'll get A's.
She makes you work for the A but she's a good professor. My advice: go to class, write down exactly what she says, be in depth on tests, and go through these other reviews for more tips. We only had three tests, including the midterm. It's mainly reading quizzes. I would watch a summary video, then read the assigned portion, then read sparknotes.
She gives great lectures, so if you do not understand a story that's okay. You will have to read all your stories because she does pop quizzes (usually 10 questions with maybe 2 bonuses) and they are 20% of your grade. She is a very tough grader, so if you have any questions about anything do not hesitate to ask her.
This class was good if you like to read lots of poems and some novels. It requires three volumes of a textbook, but honestly you can just look up the stuff to read. Just make sure that you listen to her lectures and show up because she gives pop quizzes (not multiple choice) but honestly will usually tell you when they are. She's really good
her class wasnt too demanding, she kept it interesting, didnt require too many papers. overall great
She was overall a very good and understanding professor (I had her in fall 2020). We did zoom classes and it wasn't mandatory and she recorded all of her lectures. like 3 tests, very easy. one paper, it wasn't difficult but it was the lowest I've ever made on a paper, so she grades harshly but will help if you ask for it! 7/10
She's nice but a little too into literature. She's very opinionated on everything and if you have a different idea about what a story or motif means, you're kinda screwed. Class was also a lot more difficult than it needed to be. If you want credit, try finding a different class or different professor.
Blount is so nice. You write one paper and I met with her in office hours and she helped me basically draft the whole thing. You should read, but you can get away without it just by going to class because she breaks down every part of the reading. 3 exams and some "pop" quizzes but they are online and you have a day to do them. Highly recommend
I loved Serena! She made class so fun. Quizzes and tests were super easy as long as you went to class a good bit. My favorite teacher here by far
Lots of reading, but it's American Literature so it's at least good material. She reminds me of your classic, well-liked writing teacher from high school. Not a terribly difficult grader. Found out she was running for mayor like halfway through the semester. I assume she didn't win.
I loved this class! Serena was so nice and always made class fun. As long as you read you will do well because she does a ton of pop quizzes. She also goes over every reading in detail and tells you what you need to study for the tests. There's only 1 paper assigned throughout the whole semester.
If you don't like to read, don't take this class. She is a wonderful professor that is willing to help with any questions you have. make sure you READ! she gives pop quizzes like crazy.
If you can avoid taking professor Blount I would. She has pop quizzes, 1 essay, and 3 exams including the final so you're graded by very few things. She is only dropping some of our quiz grades and pretty much everyone in class right now is failing. She's a tough grader and very rude. Seriously if you don't have to take her I wouldn't.
Serena if the meanest teacher I have ever had. If you are stupid then she will let you know that and make it extremely clear. There are readings every single day, then she will continue to give you pop quizzes after the readings. She will asks questions like "what was the main characters brother's dog's name?" She is the rudest person I have met.
Serena has been one of my favorite english professors at UA. She gives pop quizzes but her lectures are very enjoyable. Exams are easy as long as you pay attention to the review/keep up on reading. She drops a few of your lowest quiz grades at the end of the semester. Doing well on exams and the essay can help to make up for bad quiz grades also.
Dr. Blount was extremely intelligent and really taught me how to better view literature through a critical lens. This class had very few graded things though (some papers, a project, and a final), so if you aren't confident in your writing skills, don't take this.
Lots odf pop quizzes to make sure you are reading. Sometimes they are hard. never used the book and it is very lecture based and the beginning is so boring. She drops 3 quiz grades tho which is nice just not an easy class.
10/10 professor, she was very sweet and funny but also made this class very interesting! Professor Blount is one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Professor Blount makes reading fun! She is a great storyteller and selects (mostly) interesting story and poems for us to read. There are pop quizzes on the readings, but they ask very basic plot point questions. She drops 3-5 quizzes at the end of the semester, so that allows you to skip class or a fail a quiz every now and then. Only one paper!
Best damn english teacher at UA. Take her if possible.
I would never take this class again. I met with this professor and she didn't believe in my ability to be successful. She would allow some students to make up quizzes but gave me a 0. I asked her to help me and she told me my writing wasn't good and laughed at my work. She was never kind and treated you like you were incapable of doing her work.
Very passionate, high energy
Very passionate about her work which translates into her care for her students. Def need to read the textbook and come to class if you want to pass.
In all honesty, she was a good teacher. I would not take it again, though. All her tests are matching or fill-in-the-blank with no word bank, and she barely gives you anything to go off of. If you like that, I would 100% recommend her. I would retake her class if the test were not so much of my grade, but I do not recommend it.
I liked Dr. Blount, and I'm not a big fan of American literature, I enjoyed listening to her lectures. It's not a hard class, but the reading can make the course load heavy. She enjoys pop quizzes, and you should be fine if you read; however, SparkNotes may not always suffice. On the tests, put down your GTA's interpretation and you will be fine.
Serena Blount was a great professor! She did give random pop quizzes on things we read but it was not every day. It was random and on the things you were supposed to have read before coming to class. The tests were clearly given from lecture materials and she would review before tests. Her class was not difficult just took a little work.
Dr. Blount is a sweet professor, but she is very tedious. Your attendance is based on pop quizzes she gives and she normally asks the most specific questions. Depending on the year though, she will drop a ton of quizzes. I enjoyed the readings we did and she always made them interesting. Be aware, your grade will mostly come from your TA.
She has interesting reading and lectures. She is funny and interesting. Her grading is not too harsh. The pop quizzes just show that you read they aren't hard at all. Very easy class if you just attend class.
AMAZING, I loved her lectures and she made the readings interesting. If you do the readings the tests will be a breeze and many were short poems. She does do pop quizzes but they are not a significant part of grade. There is one 5 paragraph essay and two short writing assignments. Friday's discussion with TA is mandatory. GREAT professor.
Do not take this class before noon, it is endless ranting and lots of readings every week and pop quizzes that makes sense to absolutely nobody except the professor. I arrived at 08:01 am one morning and had missed the first 5 questions because she just makes them up on the spot and tells them out loud, fyi pop quizzes make up 20% of your grade
do not take this professor, it is the most pointless class I have ever taken
AWFULL- Her test are made for you to fail. SOME PARTS are no word BANK.
Worst class I have ever taken
First time I've ever rated a professor on here. I think she has good intentions but she makes this class way too difficult for what it is. The tests consist of matching fill in the blank-no word bank and 6 ish essay questions that are graded tough. Also needs in text citations for those essays questions along with knowing specific lines from poetry
Serena made this class incredibly interesting. She was so funny and you can tell she has a passion for English. She gives pop quizzes on the reading that you're supposed to do before class. There were maybe 2 or 3 that were long but most were short poems and stories. Super cool class and professor, would take again.
This class was so much more difficult than it needed to be. We took 4 tests, all consisted of matching, and fill in the blank (without a word bank). These tests also required you to be able to pick out quotes from the readings off the top of your head. Other 209 sections had a way better experience. Take a different professor.
Most condescending professor I have ever met, and I'm sorry but everyone that writes a good review here is an absolute literature major who must be as delusional as this professor is, do not take this professor if you have to take a lit class, take anyone else.
