This professor is so enthusiastic about teaching you can easily stay awake during lecture. Sincere and helpful. Lectures are very neat and organized: my notes are legible! Friday 'quizzes' (7) instead of midterm and final allow you to make up bad grades

Absolutely one of the most underated professors at WPI. Willing to help you in any way he can. Clear and concise teaching style.

At first I was not not enthusiatic about ECE3601, I am ME (thermo-fluids).By the end of the class I was almost as enthusiatic as he was, spending much time for the class. As a result he gave me a ECE text as a gift.Thank You Prof. (1 of the best @WPI)

Makarov is the most organized professor I've had here. He is so enthusiastic about the material he makes you enjoy it. The most sincere teacher I've had here too. A great guy all in all.

Very enthusiastic, I took this course cause I almost failed 2011 (I am an EE) and I wanted to make sure I understood the basics. He is great and helped me a lot, I have done very well in my other courses since starting off sort of shakey in his course.

Fantastic guy as a professor. You have to really sleep through (or not go to) his lectures to fail (although it is possible). He was a great resource for another class, even though he wasn't our professor then.

Works hard to get the matter across. Has a somewhat heavy Russian accent. Overall OK.

He was very good. Nice guy. Very clear and understandable lectures. As people before me have said, he seems very enthusiastic about the subject matter despite the fact that he's teaching non-majors. Definitely take his class if you can.

Good guy, getting to know him will definately help keep your grade high. Difficult material for non majors. Likes to start lecture about 5 mins early, so get to class! Decent class, labs are cool. Good guy

Someone said this is a waste of time for ECE majors. ignore that person. Makarov is the most amazing professor I've had at WPI. His 3311 lectures were amazing in their clarity, logical progression, and conclusion. You'll have to work like crazy for this class to pay off, but it will if you put the effort in.

The class was not a waste of time but his lectures were a bit unclear at times because of the language barrier. Hes a good guy otherwise though. The quizes were not easy, but you could usually pass them without killing yourself.

Cool class. Good guy. A little unclear at times, but it was manageable. Easy quizzes. Textbook was horrid though.

Great professor. Made ECE fun when I thought it was going to suck. Lectures are interesting and engaging. He applies everything to the real world constantly. The labs were also fun. His tests are quite easy too. If you take notes and listen in lectures, an A should be no problem.

Professor Makarov is the best teacher (not just professor) I've ever had. His competence, enthusiasm, and helpfulness have made his class one of the best I've ever taken. Not to mention he essentially knows every student by first name (impressive given the size of the class). He also attended every 3 hour lab. Now that's dedication. He's the man.

This is by far the best professor I have had at WPI. He actually cared about how his students did in his class, as well as he was so totally enthused by the material himself he was able to make lectures an enjoyable experience rather than insipid. His tests can be a challenge, but keep up with the material and you will do fine.

Best professor ever. I went in to this class concerned since it was my first ECE class. ON the first day Professor Makarov came up to me and introduced himself and asked me my name, he had trouble pronouncing it so he asked me to write it down for him. After that, he and I talked regularly. In conclusion, best professor ever.

Professor Makarov is certainly a character, but he is one of the best professors I have ever had. He genuinely wants students to learn, makes class interesting with his vigorous teaching style (it's hilarious!), and is extremely amiable. If you want to learn ECE the right way - TAKE MAKAROV!

He made what I thought would be boring material interesting. Extremely helpful, will go out of his way to help you understand. He's so enthusiastic its impossible not to get into the class at least a bit. Best professor I've had here.

One of the best professors you will ever meet. If you care so will he! He is a fair grader, he understands most situations, however there is that language barrier.I loved this class! However the labs in the middle of the course are too long and dont miss Thursday's lecture, for all 75% of the test is based on it! Too much material, too little time!

Super enthusiastic, to the point of it being really funny- keeps things interesting though! Cares a lot about students- goes to every lab section and tries his best to help you. Tests are fairly difficult, but it's easy to get A's on labs. Highly recommend =)

Amazing Enthusiastic Professor, Dedicated to students, knows 100 students by name, attends all labs to help you finish. Funny, intelligent. Attending Office Hours will help you even more. As long as you pay attention in class and focus for labs, You will have the experience of a lifetime while kick starting you ECE education with fun applications.

Makarov is a great professor, he cares about each student's progress and he puts in 110% effort for every class, lab, etc... Tests are sometimes hard, but so is the material. Labs are a good complement to the class.

I'm a junior ME student and Prof. Makarov has been the best teacher I've had in my time at WPI so far. Really enthusiastic about what he's doing! Truly dedicated to making sure you learn the material, and shows up to every lab. He's an entertaining lecturer and really inspires. I wish I had half the enthusiasm for my ME classes as I did this one

Best Professor in the ECE department and WPI in general. Makes the material fun and interesting. Labs are very cool, as he attends all of them and shows you extra cool things. Can be a lot of work at times, but he is understanding if you talk to him. He will literally put aside what he is doing to help you outside of class. Take Makarov.

This guy is so enthusiastic about the material that it's funny. Lectures are engaging and fun to listen to. He attended every one of the lab sessions and was always willing to help. I wish he could teach all of my classes.

TAKE IT WITH HIM. It may be hard at sometimes but I feel like his class is easy to get an A in if you are interested in learning (which you all should be) He is an amazing person and professor

Best teacher ever. Simple and straight forward. Very enthusiastic, runs from board to board all the time. Only assigns few homework problems, problems that will appear on the test, and provides solutions to all of them. Do the homework and you'll do fine. PS Don't worry about derivations on the board, not on test, just does them for fun I think.

BEST TEACHER YOUR WILL HAVE. EVER. although he has an accent, you can still understand. He is insanely passionate about the course and tries to know everyone on a first name basis. Even though homework is optional, do it and you'll pass

He is very clear and gives good examples that he will take painstaking time to draw accurate pictures to go with. His tests are easy if you attend lecture, read the textbook and actually do the homework

Makarov was the man! He knows everyone in his lecture and is a really nice guy. I learned a lot in the class, even though I was dreading taking it. He knows his stuff and he makes you want to attend class and learn from him. Better known as Big Mac.

Great Professor! He teaches you a lot of the subject and challenging material, but a lot TA sessions and he engages with students during labs

The intro class with him is harder then the other prof, but Makarov is AWESOME! You learn so much and it's obvious he enjoys teaching.

Makarov is a human pinball. In lectures, he bounces from blackboard to blackboard, gesticulating wildly with his hands, so it's hard not to get into the groove and devote your full attention to the material. In labs, he's phenomenal, always there to help. In the final, he was a guardian angel, walking me through a particularly hard question.

Rarely have I had a professor who clearly cares so much about both the material and helping his students learn. His lectures always kept me interested and have taught me more than any other class.

I appreciate his enthusiasm during the classes. 9 AM is the time when you still feel sleepy, but he ignites you up positively. So much work in this course, but it's a lot interesting specially the labs. HE HELPS A LOT. I messed up in a quiz but he gave me an alternative to gain extra credit. NOTE: You miss one lecture, you'd not do well on the quiz

Prof. Makarov is what every professor should try to be. He knows his material inside and out and gives phenomenal lectures. He is helpful and a genuinely nice person. Exams are difficult but doable. To top it all off he has a GREAT Russian accent which makes it easy to listen to his lectures!

Awesome professor who defected from Russia, he is super enthusiastic about what he teaches. If you want an easy A, look elsewhere; he makes you work for the grade.

He really cares about the students and loves what he does. The class really boosted by interest in ECE. Labs are really helpful and fun if your interested. Not much work at all but theres a test every week. He's the only professor I'd take for intro to ECE

I loved the class and definitly convinced me to be an ECE major. The lectures went in to depth on the topics but Makarov was so enthusiastic it was never boring. If your having trouble go for help. The tests were difficult but there are 6 of them so you can do badly on a few but still do well. Also do book problems!

This was the first real big lecture class I had and it was a big wake up call as far as difficulty, but it was also my favorite class from the semester. Makarov is hilarious. don't miss lectures because they are pertinent to you passing and they are probably going to be the highlight of your day. Go to the lab help session or you will mess it up.

Deserves the reputation he has. Tests/HW are easy. Do the reading and HW, they help. Labs are fun. MATLAB assignments can be a little difficult if you've never used it before. Definitely not a light class at 7 hours of class a week + MATLAB/HW/reading on the side. ECE 2010 with Makarov is one of the best classes you can take at WPI.

One of my favorite professors so far. If you are lost in class then you can come to him and he'll be so happy to help. He is so excited about the material! Most likely he will highlight formulas you need, but he derives everything. If the deriving confuses you, wait until he boxes the formula you need. If you are struggling on the test, he;ll help.

He's an excellent teacher. You'll learn a lot. His lectures are enthusiastic, vivid, clear, and fast-paced. Lots of material, and there's a test EVERY FRIDAY. Tests are based on the homework, which is never collected. The essentials are worth 20pts, the details worth 5 pts. Labs are equal to tests, and they can be confusing, but graded generously.

He is one of the greatest professor in WPI.

Makarov is extremely passionate about ECE and really tries to teach you the material. I would recommend reading because the book usually gives easier ways to do things than he does in lecture. The labs are a pain but an easy A if you can get through them. Overall he is great, and there are 6 tests so if you bomb one its no big deal.

I've made it my mission to go back and rate every professor I've had at WP. I'm a pretty average student that knows how to work hard. Sergey Makarov goes above and beyond the call of duty for a professor. He brings the most genuine interest and passion to every lecture and is a joy to have. Not the easiest classes, but you will learn so much.

Fantastic guy. You will never want to skip his lectures - they are fantastic. Tests every week, but they are easy if you prepare.

This is the only ECE course I need to take, and I'm happy it was with him. This class made me like ECE, at least for this one class. Super engaging lectures (even at 4pm). Do the homework and understand the concepts, and you will get an A. Matlab assignments are also due weekly, but are only 9% of your grade, so don't fret other that.

The first time you will understand anything truly in your life. He has 7 exams, one every week on material he's taught for 3 days and plus an additional lab every week, so lots of work. He's available at 9pm on a Sunday and loves answering questions and helping students out, highly recommend taking his class.

Best professor at WPI that I've had so far. He knew my name in a large class, and was very encouraging. Lectures involved him sprinting between boards and putting knitting needles in wall plugs. He would come to lab sections and jump right in with the students, showing us cool tricks that went beyond the lab. Gives great hints during tests too.

I took ECE 2010 with Makarov and TA for the class now and will probably have him for my MQP. If I were to describe WPI at its best, I would use Makarov as my example. If I were to select one professor to take in underground, Makarov would be my choice.

The best or nothing !!!!!!!! He is so amazing !!!! I would like to say he is the best professor in our school ! He is always ready to help you. The lecture is a little bit confused if you do not have any background in physics. If you wanna learned something really useful , just choose him as your professor! pleeeeeeease!

Professor Makarov is an amazing professor. His lectures were very engaging and he was able to explain the topics really well. He is available outside of class- a lot of times he would go to labs and matlab help sessions. There are tests every Friday, but there are usually help sessions the night before the test (highly recommend going to those).

One of the best professors I've had at WPI. His lectures are lively, easy to take notes for, and cover more than enough ground without being overwhelming. He knew the names of most people in the class by the middle of the term, and encouraged people to ask questions. He also came into labs and helped us out which was great.

Top tier professor. His lectures are the best I have attended at WPI. The class is well organized and he provides practice problems that will prepare you for the weekly tests(all weighted the same and no cumulative midterm or final). If you can take a class with him do it.

Professor Makarov is likely one of the best professors at WPI. His ECE2010 lectures are dynamic, perfectly paced, and his class covers an incredible amount of ground in only 7 weeks. He comes in to lab and helps students out and talks to them about the class even when he could just let TAs handle it all. Fair workload, constant and no big spikes.

The best crazy Russian professor. I learned a lot. His class motivated me to major in ECE. If you need to take ECE 2010, do so with him.

Amazing Professor. Very enthusiastic about electrical engineering, and his excitement rubs off on you. Always running around the lecture hall to get to different blackboards faster in his excitement. Super accommodating to my mental health needs, and very willing to work with me on rescheduling tests, labs, and pushing back homework assignments.

As you read below, He's just an amazing professor super enthusiastic... with an amazing accent. The labs in his 2010 class are fun and he's able to project himself very well. He's very nice too if you have a question!

Probably the most enthusiastic professor at WPI. His class inspired me to become an ECE major. He was more than welcome to talk to me about the classes I would take and which professors he thinks are the best teachers. He shows real dedication and care when he makes an appearance in the labs to help the students, even though it isn't required.

Very fun professor, who is clearly passionate about the content. Fun and helpful labs. He's kind of difficult to understand with his thick Russian accent, but still engaging.

By far my the best lecturer Ive had so far in college. He brings a certain energy to the room that makes anything ECE related exciting and interesting.

If you need this class and you don't take professor Makarov's class, you are seriously missing out. The weekly tests can be quite tough, but if you do/look at the answers for the non-mandatory homework, then you should do just fine. He is the most passionate professor and he knows his stuff. Best Prof. by far.

Professor Makarov is one of my favorite professors at WPI. His enthusiasm for the class was contagious, and made you want to go to class, even at 9am. He does go through material pretty fast, but as long as you're prepared for that it shouldn't be an issue. He also helped me a lot during his own free time to make sure my lab circuit functioned!

The most entertaining professor I've ever had, and he managed to do it while also teaching a lot of material very quickly. I was excited to come to every class. The tests are at home and fully open note, and they are most of what you are graded on. The labs are rather difficult if you are unexperienced with circuits as they get complicated.

Professor Makarov was beyond enthusiastic when it came to ECE. His love for it rubs off on you by the end of the course, and the amount of knowledge you leave with is astonishing. I highly recommend completing all the homework assignments completely as they are very useful for the exams each week.

Prof. Makarov's lectures are amazing and so engaging. His passion for what he's teaching is so fun to watch. The material in general is a little tough to understand but for tests GO TO THE REVIEW SESSION!!! The review session is like free answers and the TA's help a lot.

Very knowledgeable and entertaining during his lectures. I learned a lot from his class, and I would definitely recommend.

If I could only take classes from one professor for the rest of my time in college, I am confident it would be with this man. He lights up the room with his passion for what he teaches and is incredibly smart and great at explaining things. We saw him make sparks fly out of outlets and he had a TA bring in a musical Tesla coil. Truly outstanding.

weekly tests, great informative and engaging lectures, tricky but if you stay ontop of the homework and go to reviews sessions it isn't too hard

He's amazing, funny, and smart

Textbook was optional but required for the optional homework. About 20% of problems on all tests would have difficult problems that were impossible to study for. Despite this lectures were entertaining, labs were not difficult if not a tad time consuming and lecture attendance was optional.

He stuck metal piece into the outlet. Why shouldn't I love him.

Not a very good lecturer on the basis for learning the material to do well on the test; just watch the mini lectures on canvas. But perhaps I'm biased because I hate ECE 😭. However his tests are very easy and he is a funny guy. Uses a textbook but it is not required to use unless you actually enjoy ECE content.

Take him if you can! His enthusiasm is so infectious

He is always energetic and passionate for every lecture and truly cares about the material. Homework is not graded but is necessary to study for weekly exams. He was available for office hours after each lecture and went over the homework and other questions if asked. Very friendly.
