Great
He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. His lectures are very hard to understand. He doesn't allow his students to meet with the TA and the grading is very harsh. Definitely stay away if you value your GPA.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. Doesn't teach material in class just reads over his notes word for word rather than practicing the material (sloppy handwriting as well so its hard to follow). DO NOT HAVE HIM! But if you are stuck with him, go to every discussion to do problems with TA's and go to tutoring in order to succeed in the class.
He knows what he is talking about. He is happy to help you if you try in the class
He's a nice guy, but not a good lecturer. There are probably a lot of easier linear algebra professors out there. He includes a lot of true/false questions, which are kind of pointless.
Sergii is a great professor. He is very clear about his expectations and the material that will be covered on homework, quizzes and exams. At times his lectures can get bogged down in theory, which requires a bit of clarification during office hours or through use of the textbook. The word choice he uses s is absolutely hillarious
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. Terrible lecture and doesn't teach material that will be on tests. Only goes over theory and not actual problems doesn't explain things will. Avoid at all costs !!
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He reads straight from the 'book' (it is just a document online) and does not stop for two hours. He does not let you see the TA and offers no help outside of class. The quizzes are all true or false questions and impossible to answer the way he wants. All problems are theory proofs (very difficult.)
The professor reads right out of the textbook for the class, and when you ask a question he gets upset and asks why you are not keeping up with him. If you go into his office hours after a midterm you can get points back, but otherwise an awful teacher.
WORST professor I've ever had. For the entire two hours, all he does is read from the textbook (which, by the way, is an online PDF and unhelpful). He also does not allow students to see his TA, which is unheard of. He wants students to ask questions in class, but he gets annoyed when someone asks him something. 1 star is generous.
All lectures are straight from the textbook / pdf and are somehow harder to follow than reading from the textbook yourself. There is no discussion or TA office hours and he is completely unhelpful in answering questions. Doing all homeworks and reading all sections will hardly do anything to prepare you for his ridiculous true/false based quizzes.
Terrible professor. He is condescending when you ask questions, poor at communicating his thoughts, and an inconsistent grader on tests/quizzes.
Sergii is Ukrainian. He is very nice and cares about his students. His lectures are not terrible, the only thing that was difficult about lectures was understanding his strong accent at times. He gives weekly homework and usually a quiz every other week. Lecture is twice a week with no discussion so most of the learning is done outside of class.
Professor Bezuglyi is a great guy and professor. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His lectures are very detailed and he adds a touch of humor to them. There are quizzes every week, but they aren't so bad. The tests are quite difficult though. He is overall a great professor to have had.
He reads right from the book and its honestly harder to follow because of his thick accent. He goes too fast for his thick accent and when someone stops him to ask a question he gets annoyed. Smart guy..... he should not be teaching freshman by any means though.
He is a great person and professor. He cares about his students and always asks for questions and such. The TAs work well with him as well. The problem is that there a lot of quizzes and hard midterms. Enjoyed the lectures.
Sergii is a great teacher and very funny guy. Although he is hard to understand, his notes are immaculate. Lecture is vital to learning concepts so do not skip and just attend discussion like most do. This class and professor have a horrible reputation across campus but if you devout time to the course and put in work, you will be successful.
Tests are a huge part of the grade. The homeworks are extremely long but are the same for all professors. Sergii is really nice and seems to care about students, but will get annoyed at simple questions. I did enjoy him, but I most likely would not take another class from him solely due to his accent. Take Charlie Kirk if he is available.
Sergii was a little hard to understand. However, he really cares and was more than willing to answer any questions. Homework was easy but exams did not really reflect material taught in class.
I took Calc AB in high school, so I knew most of the material already. If you are in a similar situation as me, this will be easy. I never went lecture due to my previous knowledge and was perfectly fine. For beginners, he gave VERY clear notes, some students just didn't go to lecture. The only hard part was he was sometimes hard to understand.
Test's are much more difficult than the reviews that he gives out for them. Dr. Bezugli is willing to help in office hours and does a good job in them as well as he does in lecture. Has a bit of an accent but if you sit close you should be okay. Make sure to prepare for the midterms because those and the finals determine your grade.
Had him as a prof for calc for business. Dont take his class. Probably one of the worst professors Ive had. Lectures right from the book and doesnt explain anything. The test are hard and really the only thing that gets graded. The discussion is a waste of time. All around a hard class that was actually useless :/
I can't imagine taking Calc for Bio without previously taking calc in highschool. He is a very nice guy and definitely works hard so that his students learn the material. The problem is that he is very hard to understand and his explanations are not great. When I didn't understand something I went to youtube/khan academy instead.
If you have no calculus background, be prepared to learn a lot on your own. Lectures outlined material but failed to really help me with homework and tests. Homework was super helpful to review concepts, as was my teaching assistant.
Sergii is the greatest human I have ever met. He bring life to the classroom every day and I always look forward to his lectures. He's the GOAT.
Dr. Bezuglyi is truly an amazing professor. He is so knowledgeable about what he is teaching and is always happy to help. He assigns homework that is relevant for quizzes/tests and gives lots of resources to help you succeed, you can tell he cares about his students doing well in class. If you can, take this class with Sergii!!!!
Sergii is a professor who doesn't explain material well, doesn't teach really anything but reading off a piece of paper. He expects you to know way too much content for a beginner-level math class. His lectures are pointless and to be frank and honest with you his teaching method is pointless. Your better off teaching yourself than to pay attention
I do not recommend taking one of Sergiis classes if you are not a great independent learner. Sergii does not explain course material well, at all. He is generally hard to understand and hard to follow. Hes a very nice guy, but not the best teacher.
Dr. Bezuglyi is honestly a great person. Fun to listen to, and I can guarantee you won't be bored in his class. However, his lectures are very confusing at times, as he gives very few examples to explain what he's saying.
Two words: good luck. Sergii is probably the worst math teacher I have ever had. I have read that people have a hard time understanding his accent, but that's not even the problem. His notes are completely incoherent, and the TAs are not what I would call helpful. I got through the class by completely teaching myself, so be ready to study.
Like a lot of people have said, Sergii is truly a great human. However, he is not a great math teacher. I took his Quantitative Reasoning for Business class and would have had a really tough time if I didn't take pre-calc and calc in high school. The quizzes are very hard, and the lectures/discussions didn't mesh very well.
Everyone in my class adored Sergii. He seems like a sweet guy, but tends to often get annoyed at students who don't put in the work. Quizzes could be super hard, but homework and tests were pretty manageable.
Sergii is a nice person but that's about where the good part of this class ends. His lectures are hard to understand and you're going to have to teach everything to yourself or hope you have a good TA. He is not very forgiving and seems to think everyone should be on his level of knowledge. Overall would not recommend.
Lectures arent worth going to, just use the homework and youtube to study. Thinks that when whole class is doing well its an issue of being too easy. Thinks everybody should be as knowledgeable as him when people complain about material getting harder. Use yo ur outside resources and you should be alright, i never learned a single thing from him.
Sergii is a very smart dude, but maybe too smart. He skips a lot of stuffs so it's hard to see his thinking process sometimes. He moves fast, don't skip lectures, and the homework is like the tests, but the quizzes can screw you over.
He seems like a nice man, but he has no business teaching. He does not know how to connect with his students or operate technology. My advice is to form a great relationship with your TA and SI instructors if you want to do well.
Sergii was pretty hard to understand, so the lectures did not help at all. He is a really caring professor and is always open to answering questions, and the homework was relatively easy, but the exams were hard.
He is a very sweet man but is extremely hard to understand. The lectures are so pointless and the exams are almost impossible. My TA was awesome but you should be prepared to teach yourself the material. The homework does help with the quizzes which are a big part of the grade.
Super hard to understand and the homework is endless. The TA I had during this class was also not helpful at all. She would only read off the answer key and never taught us anything. Sergii and the TA's are never on the same page and the entire experience of taking this class was so confusing.
Super difficult class. Very heavy on quizzes that often are much more difficult than the homework. Super nice guy but just sets his class up in a way that makes it really easy to dig yourself a hole if you aren't understanding the content.
Sergii is a great guy, but it is so hard to learn from him. He is way to smart for us and isn't the best teacher. I had a hard time learning from his lectures. My best advice is go to your discussions and find YouTube videos to watch.
Lectures are pointless, he cant explain how to do anything
Not a bad class if you can navigate Khan Academy and learn on your own. His lectures are pointless because he cannot explain anything without confusing you or making you feel dumb. Weekly quizzes and exams were super easy because they were online. Photomath is a must.
Very hard to understand during lectures. I passed only cuz I taught myself the material. He also doesn't understand some students' questions and has short temper at times. I asked if we could use graphing calculators for the midterm and he snapped saying that we "didn't need them". I was too scared to ask him again if they were allowed or not.
Literally the worst class I think I've ever taken in my life. Sergi has a very thick accent and goes over the same problems in 40 different ways that make it impossible to learn anything from the lecture. Its so bad to the point where 70% of my class didn't even show up. Everyone I knew had to learn the course via youtube videos.
Sergii may be my worst teacher ever. His accent makes it hard to understand and he confuses himself on top of that. Smart man, terrible teacher. My TA also had a thick accent so I've taught myself all semester. Told us we wouldn't need a calculator. We did. Asks for questions. Gets mad when questions are asked. Ridiculous he still has a job here.
A lot of people said his accent would be hard to understand, but it's not. He posts all of his notes and lectures and the weekly quizzes are only 2-3 simple questions. The only bad thing is that some of the things on the exams are not very talked about, but usually only a question or two. He is a very nice person and gives a lot of extra credit.
Took AP Calc in HS, but you could still pass with a basic knowledge of calc. The first half is like middle school level math, and only gets kind of hard at the end. All the quizzes are basically telegraphed to you before you take them. I barely pay attention and do just fine, if you try the class is a cakewalk. -A fellow Sergiistan
I actually had this professor for Math 1440 because he had to fill in for another prof for the remainder of the semester. I can tell he is really smart, but too smart and confusing for us to learn in online lectures. His accent isnt bad to understand if you actually listen but he does not really cover the same things we do in discussion.
Depending on your TA this class is either easy or impossible. Grading isn't bad just make sure you are in a groupchat
He is a very nice guy but he cannot teach. He is smart and knows the material but his thick accent is hard to understand and I felt that in his lectures that I would unlearn any material that I already knew previously because the way he taught it was confusing. To pass this class you need to attend discussion and make groupchats with classmates.
Sergii took over this course halfway through. His expectations are clear, easy grader, and curves at the end of the semester - even changed our curve because he didn't believe enough students had an A. Amazing teacher.
TERRIBLE lectures, cannot understand him over the computer. Thinks his students should understand everything after 1 example where his notes are all over the place and illegible and gets mad when you ask questions. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES
Dr. bezuglyi is undoubtedly a very smart guy, but quant for business was an incredibly boring and easy class that covers such a sweeping broad amount of math topics that if you are coming into the class without a ton of confidence in your math it will be difficult. otherwise if you know up to basic calculus you wont need to attend a single lecture.
This class starts off with basic algebra, so don't worry if you didn't take any calc classes in high school. I personally took notes from the textbook and it made everything easier, but you should also go to SI, you won't learn anything from Sergii. Quizzes are like worksheets, exams are like homework. There's a curve. Also, pray for a good TA.
Sergii is nice but a bit confusing in his lectures. Expect homework and pray for a good TA.
I took pre calc in high school and did just fine. His concepts are hard to understand but his practice questions are just like the quizzes and tests. There are participation questions every day that also help raise your grade (use photomath)
His lectures were so hard to understand. Then he gets frustrated when you ask a question because you don't know what's going on
Content of the class wasn't overly difficult. Got lucky with my TA but found it a little hard to learn from lectures. The homework doesn't prepare you well for exams, but quizzes are easy if you pay attention.
I learn absolutely nothing in lectures because they are so confusing and hard to follow. Get ready to utilize YouTube and teaching yourself.
Have to learn everything through your self or through your ta. You better hope you get a good ta
The lectures were hard to follow and difficult to listen to. There are 2 midterms worth 20% of your grade and the final worth 30% of your grade. You want to hope you get a good TA otherwise you are screwed. This is probably the worst class I have ever taken.
Awful he doesn't answer questions and doesn't explain he just rambles
Sergii's class is impossible to pay attention to because its online and he's always all over the place with his lectures. If you don't have a good TA, you will be teaching yourself most if not all of the material for the class.
I don't understand all the Sergii hate - I genuinely enjoyed this class. It was very organized. If you don't lecture, just do the attendance code and go to discussion section. If you have a good TA you should be just fine doing this. Exams were pretty easy as well, plus he offers extra credit to boost your grade.
He is a good professor if you are willing to pay attention
Clearly cares about his students
very possible to get a high grade if you put in the work
Very easy to understand if you pay attention. people did not attend lecture then blamed their poor grade on his teaching.
Very genuine man who enjoys helping students.
Well taught class. plenty of practice problems.
Least favorite class I have taken at Iowa. Sergii is fine but if you aren't super math savvy you may struggle. Tests were nothing like the review tests and homework and it was super frustrating. As a teacher Sergii is just fine, I don't think that I really learned well with his teaching style but I know others who didn't struggle at all.
He lingers too long.
better hope you get a good TA lol
i already didn't like math but now i hate it
Online lectures don't match up with the homework or quizzes so it's basically studying three different types of math problems at the same time. Attendance is required for lectures and there are questions on tophat that count for a grade. Quizzes during class are easy as long as you study and most midterms are only 20 multiple choice questions.
Choose a good TA for this course and you will be fine. Nothing wrong with Sergii himself, lectures taught behind/ahead of discussion. The best thing about Sergii is that during lecture he gives quiz questions ahead of time and provides examples that will be on tests/quiz.
Horribly organized class and teachers who barely know how to work their own sites for their class. Horrible class overall
It's clear that Sergii cares a lot about his students and helping them learn, however the way he explains concepts is pretty confusing. If you have any sort of calc knowledge or are good at math in general you'll be completely fine. If not hopefully you get a good TA
He's Ukrainian and hard to understand, gets frustrated when we don't understand the content and ask questions. if you have taken calc you most likely will understand most of it, midterms are 20 questions each and the final is 25 and make up 65% of your grade so be prepared. Lectures have top hat and it's worth 8% of grade so you have to go to class
This guy needs to update his schedule to be more up to date. -Creates slides that are confusing to review on, and includes definitions that any 18 year old won't be able to understand well. -Midterms are graded unfairly. 20 questions and are weighted 20-25% of your grade. -Difficult to understand, class is pointless. TA's are most 80% of the work.
Does not explain concepts very well in lecture/gets mad when asked questions. Only passed because I had a good TA. If you've taken Pre-calc you will know how to do everything already besides limits and derivatives. Did not learn anything from lectures and everyone stopped attending them altogether. Lectures only offered on zoom which made it worse.
The Big Serg was a bit wack but we made it though. If you took any precalc or higher in HS you will be absolutely fine. He does get mad when you ask questions a lot of the time. The TA is more clutch during discussion sections. There is a quiz every Thursday about the topic you went over last week.
Pray for a good TA.
Difficult to understand at times during online lectures Upset if asked questions by students Never felt like the review sessions really helped
Sergii is an interesting teacher, but his teaching styles were even more interesting because they were non-existant. If you like learning through watching chicken scratch on an ipad and listening to a heavy european accent this teacher is for you!
When I logged on to Zoom for the first day of this class, I knew it was going to be a long semester. Sergii means well, but his accent is very thick and he's difficult to understand- and he makes no effort to combat this issue. He is also very rude when asked questions by students during lecture, he gets very upset and basically calls us dumb.
The professor is absolutely TERRIBLE, and his lectures have NOTHING to do with the quizzes every week. You need to be prepared to learn on your own or you will fail this class. Unfortunately, this class is a requirement for many people, but if it's not, then DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Sergii is misunderstood! He does almost everything he cans for you to succeed. Whether that be practice problems, extra credit, showing you resources, basically giving you the exact questions on the midterms, etc. If I am being honest I did not listen to many of his lectures, so you will need to learn on your own or with a group. Overall hard class
He was very nice and likes to talk about football which was funny. Class was hard but it was doable. Go to SI and math lab and you'll be fine. Hopefully you get a good TA. Do the practice quizzes and homework and you will be prepared and just fine.
Sergii is nice but the class is difficult because its taught over zoom. Make sure you study the practice exams, they are almost identical to the real tests. Both midterms and the final make up a large proportion of your grade so prepare for them. The quizzes and homework are pretty easy.
Sergii is a very smart guy, but not the best teacher. He gets mad when students ask questions, which shows a lack of patience; a trait that is crucial for being a teacher. This class is very exam-heavy, so study a lot. Skip exam review sessions, they're absolutely useless. Use the module practice exams to study instead.
Sergii is pretty mid. Met better professors that teach accurately. TA's do most of the teaching and grade your work.
The worst part about Sergii is that his lectures and homework never lined up with what was talked about in discussion. This made it feel like you never knew what was going on since you were learning two different things at a time in the class. If you can avoid him, do it.
Seems like a good guy himself however you can barely understand him and his lectures are confusing. He focuses on definitions too much then skips steps of explaining how to actually do things. Class itself isn't super hard until the last unit. TA's do most of the teaching and my TA was bad. Kind of have to teach yourself.
He is a good professor and smiles every day while teaching. If you are in the front of the class and pay attention along with answering the tophat questions, you will do really well. He is more of a why you need to do this (concepts) in maths rather than this is how you do it (solving problems).
Thick accent and talks quietly. Read the textbook provided, have a good TA and use resources to understand what you're doing. He's a good guy and is trying his best but you need to put in the effort yourself to do well in this class. Homework didn't relate to anything he talked about in class and exams are weighted heavily.
Sergii is an awesome professor who is very knowledgeable. He does have an accent that took me awhile to get used to, however if you listen closely and carefully, you will get it. He is very kind and understanding and has a very good heart.
Awesome and kind hearted lecturer. Sergii is great and very intelligent! Can be a tough class, but if you try to learn, you will understand with him as your professor!
He used tophat for attendance so it's easy to not go to class. Thick accent, but you really only need to be able to read his handwriting which is easy. He seems like he really cares about what he is teaching. The study guide for the midterms are almost exactly the same as the test. Quizzes can be hard depending on how difficult your TA decides
Very thick accent which made it very hard to understand him at times. Also has a quiet tone usually which doesn't help much. The first two tests were extremely easy, last one was very hard. If you manage to keep an A until the final you should do alright.
Sergii is so freaking hard to understand. you have to sit front row if you want to understand lecture. class is cake until the last two units which are confusing
Sergii Is not bad at all! The bad ratings are just because people did not try. I am not good at math, and through hard work I ended up getting a A+. Attendance is mandated through top hat. The quizzes are hard I will be honest, you got to stay on top of them. The tests are just like the practice tests. There is a ton of extra credit as well!
Sergii's teaching style is old school. Lectures and just expects you to get it. Discussion is where most learning took place. I used his lectures as a study hall for other classes. Makes attendance 8% of your grade. There are plenty of options for extra credit throughout the semester.
By far the worst professor I have ever had and one of the worst teachers I've had since kindergarten. It is impossible to understand a single word that comes out of his mouth. Whatever you do, avoid taking any course he teaches at all costs.
Sergii is a decent professor, nothing to look forward to, but nothing horrible. Accent is only a problem if you sit in the back, so just lock in and sit in the front for this class to understand what he is saying. He teaches and expects you to understand, overall, mid prof, and you should expect to work a lot on your own to learn concepts.
My king Sergii
This professor is very hard to understand and is not a great teacher. It is basically your own responsibility to to teach yourself, and very rarely is the information given in lecture helpful. The class is also weighted which makes it hard to maintain a good grade.
His class genuinely wasn't as bad as most comments say. Yes, the lectures are boring and he does have an accent, but you can understand what he's saying if you try to listen. The extra credit helps and you don't have to show up to class since attendance is through tophat. I recommend showing up to discussion though, it's definitely pretty helpful.
Yeah no he IS as bad as everyone else says. The beginning of the class was decent, the first quiz was easy and the second decent. But the last one had a 55% average. My final grade got bumped up an entire letter because of how awful everyone did on the final. (it's 25% of your grade!) The class is a mess with terrible TA coordination and lectures.
Sergii's lectures can be tricky to follow due to his thick accent, but engaging with the class and using study aids like unstuckstudy will help you succeed. The material is manageable until the end, so stay on top of it.
Sergii's lectures are ok when everyone isn't talking during class. Some of the quizzes are pretty hard. If you do not like your TA's teaching style, try to switch immediately. Discussions are where you will learn the most, and if your TA sucks, the whole class will suck. There are lots of practice questions for the exams, which helps.
This guy should not be teaching. Can't understand a word he says and even if i could hes a horrible teacher. It's not too hard for the first unit and a half because it's review, but when it gets to new topics he's the worst proffesor i've ever head. Good luck..
I enjoyed this class and professor was very nice. I would definitely take another one of his classes.
Very difficult to understand in lectures given not just his accent, but also his constant muttering and hesitations. Even if you could understand him, his lecturing method is unhelpful. Instead of teaching the methods and steps to solving equations, he'll just solve them himself and hope you fill in the blanks.
Hes a nice guy, but he shouldnt be teaching. His accent makes it harder to get and the way he does a topic is the long way around it. Makes the class more confusing than it should be, your ta is make or break for this class. Garret is a life saver
Sergii is a very caring teacher, always opening up time for student questions. He truly cares about the students and their understanding! I always appreciate a passionate professor. As others have mentioned, students in class can be especially loud and distracting, but not at the fault of the Professor.
Professor difficult to understand with accent. TA also had a hard accent and even then wasn't much help during discussions. I even went to the SI classes for help and the student helper there wasn't a good teacher. Huge curve in this class. My 53% was a C- in the end. Tophat used for attendance.
Firstly you cant understand what hes saying in lecture and its not just because of his accent but also for how monotone he is. Secondly it is hard to follow along on what he is teaching because of how all over the place he is when it comes to the subject we are on. He will do easy problems but then assign the hardest ones on the quizzes
Very sweet guy, sometimes explains things in an unhelpful way, TA might make or break your grade, if you somewhat listen in lectures, do worksheets in discussion, study for quizzes and exams this class is not bad.
His accent is so thick and I had trouble understanding what he was trying to say the whole semester. Top Hat is used for participation, so I wouldn't skip. I had to teach myself the concepts through watching videos from the textbook, which is the only reason why I have a good grade rn. His way of explaining the concepts is confusing.
Sergii is clearly a great guy, but he just made math harder for me. Lectures are not productive, and it is very hard to follow and learn from them. Discussions have quizzes once a week (3 questions, 15 points). My TA was pretty good, which made the class manageable, but I definitely relied on my discussion days to learn anything.
Nearly impossible to understand what he is saying. Lecture is almost pointless to attend. Pray you have a good discussion TA. Fairly easy class though.
She is very hard to understand. It's hard to keep up with her in class.
Can't understand what he says, he seems like a good guy but have to learn the entire course from TA or Youtube.
Sergii is probably a nice dude, but he is extremely difficult to understand, which makes actually learning more of a chore than it already is. My TA was fine, but very monotone and made discussion a drag. I would prepare to learn everything on your own unless you get a good TA.
Very nice guy, awful professor. Very thick accent but I could understand him just fine, he simply isnt good at giving lectures. Mandatory lectures 3 days a week that do not help with learning at all. TAs arent that helpful. Content was very difficult for me. Plan to learn everything on your own outside of class. Exams are multiple choice.
His teaching style is very confusing. I attended almost every lecture to get tophat points but learned almost nothing from them. Homework is helpful but takes a long time. Weekly quizzes are annoying but good checks for understanding. Lots of people cheating on exams this semester.
Not welcome in agartha. Heavy, heavy accent. Make sure you have a good TA, pretty sure the good ratings on here are fake.
Sergii should not be teaching. He is incredibly hard to understand. Paying attention to his lectures made me want to bang my head into a wall. He will write the problem and then jump to conclusions without attempting to explain what he is doing. He uses the most mediocre examples I have ever seen by a math professor. If you take this, good luck.
He is a very sweet guy but very hard to understand. GO TO CLASS AND DO THE TOPHAT. the tophat honestly is such a big part of ur grade and i wish i didnt forget to do it all the time. TAs are terrible and are no help at all.
I never wore a seatbelt while driving to his course because I had hoped that I would wrap my car around a tree before making it to his class
Sergii is very qualified in what he does, but I didn't have a good experience in this course. His lectures are filled with mumbling, which makes him hard to understand. His exams are heavily weighted and will ruin your grade if you have a bad day. Also, the exams were disproportionately difficult compared to other course material. Do not recommend.
