Turner teaches macroeconomics in a modern way so that you learn so much! I really think you'd be detracting from your economics education if you took EC18 with another professor. Tests are difficult and problem sets are also hard but he is so accessible in office hours and really wants to help you learn. Overall, one of my favorite econ profs.
I took Game Theory with Turner and absolutely loved the class- one of my favorite courses. Full disclosure: I knew I liked GT going in, but with a lesser teacher this course could have been much less enjoyable. Weekly HW feels like a lot, but is necessary to keep up with the material. Tests can be tricky, but he's lenient with the curve. Loved him!
He's very willing to help you if you want to learn the material--either go to office hours or ask questions in class. Exams are moderately difficult, but it's a very generous curve (A- is the average). Overall, great professor! Would definitely take another class with him.
Professor Turner is the most helpful professors I know. He does an amazing job of explaining the challenging concepts. Plus, his lectures are interesting. He also seem to always have office hours, and encourages students to talk to him. Weekly hw is slightly challenging, but manageable. Tests are fairly easy because they are identical to hw
Without question, an amazing professor. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable of financial mathematics, but also of current issues in the economy that relate directly to the material. His energy makes lectures worthwhile and his willingness to spread knowledge is inspirational. Do not hesitate to ask questions as he is always there for students!
Great Professor, clearly cares about his students and goes the extra mile to make himself accessible outside of class.
Wow... best professor I've had at Tufts... easily. I think what Professor Turner does best is that he uses simple examples to illustrate a concept, which he does in depth and usually builds on previous concepts, and then extends to more complicated but quite interesting examples. Go to class, stay engaged, and you will be rewarded.
Pretends to be accessible to students, but if you actually go to office hours, he's not helpful. He'll answer a different question than the one asked and then refuse to actually answer your question because you're supposed to be "learning." Graded entirely on Z scores, so no matter how well you do, all that matters is how you compare to others
I don't understand how Turner's rating is so high. He's honestly not very bright. He seems to be figuring out how to do problems as he goes. His powerpoints are difficult to follow and you can be almost certain that he'll answer your question in a snarky way that won't help
This guy had a 4.9 coming into the semester., and I am extremely unsure of how that happened. Turner is definitely a smart guy, but when it comes to teaching he is confusing and the material is not engaging. i expected to learn more about the macroeconomy in this class. The problem sets were also extremely difficult. However, class is curved.
I am extremely disappointed to walk out of this class feeling like I learned nothing about macroeconomics. The lectures contain virtually zero math (while the p-sets are exclusively quantitative). He once hurried me out of office hours because I was asking specific questions. The curve is absurd and a couple points makes or breaks a letter grade.
On the first exam, he wrote a question worth almost 20% of the grade that said: "Will the following contribute to GDP? Bigger or smaller?" with no indication of reference for the second question. When students asked him what it meant, he commented: "your interpretation of the exam is part of your score.
This class is not helpful at all. Learnt nothing out of it.
He's not a very clear teacher, but if you go to office hours you can easily get perfect scores on your problem sets, most people got perfect scores on the tests and he lets you have cheat sheets. So though the class may be confusing, it is definitely passable if you are willing to view the work, and class time as separate.
Just awful all around. Pretty sure he literally emailed kids who did the best on his first exam to leaving him good ratings
Turns Game Theory into Sleep Theory.... Homeworks are way harder than what he teaches you during the lectures. Boring, dull and even he seems perplexed.
Excellent professor, very professional and clear.
Tests are a guessing game based on nothing discussed in class
I was prepared for the worst when I took his Game Theory this semester, having read all the terrible reviews on this site. But his classes are actually pretty interesting if you stay engaged! It's definitely not an easy-A class, but go to his office hours and ask questions. He's patient and caring.
At the start of the semester, he might come across as the most organized professor you have seen. However, by the halfway mark, you will realize that he is confused about the material he teaches, is extremely dry and unhelpful, and his grading criteria are awful. No matter what the average on an (easy) test is, it will translate to a B. What even?
I have nothing to say. He is straight up the most boring lecturer. The man is always confused about what he is teaching, says he is there to support us but is NOT, and during the COVID-19 situation, he has been the LEAST accommodative and MOST self-centered professor that I have. Never making the mistake of taking another class with him.
Do yourself a favor & decide against taking any class taught by him. He might be a decent human being, but is a terrible professor who cares lesser & lesser as the semester passes. Expected us to write a 78mark midterm within 90 minutes, scan answers, and submit during COVID-19 when every other professor put their students safety & security first.
These are the facts that happened in our class: 1)He has really dumb grading system where the average on his easy tests is a B, I got a 92 and got a B. A 95 was an A. (Test was on 50). 2) When the COVID situation happened he was extremely unsympathetic he asked everyone to buy a $90 scanner. 3) He gave HW that due 2 hours after he set it.
If you are doing his Game Theory class because you want to take Behavioral Economics (which is the reason most people take this class), just take the Quantitative version or Industrial Organization instead. He turns even the most interesting concepts boring and incomprehensible. He just doesnt know how to teach and grade. Good students end with B.
Early on, he seemed like a decent prof. His lectures were dry at times and his teaching method didn't follow the textbook, but he was at least approachable outside of class. This all changed during the COVID-19 situation - he gave NO help/support, no extra time on exams, & returned no grades. And his horrible grading system messed us up immensely!
Notoriously the worst professor at Tufts. HORRIBLE. I cannot stress enough do not ever take this class. Before and after we were sent home due to COVID, multiple students in game theory had to go to the dean because he was so abusive an horrible. He is mean and berates students and yet doesn't teach. Grades on bell curve so average grade is a C+.
I've never before reviewed a Tufts professor, nor did I intend to until I took Quantitative Financial Economics with Professor Turner. After messing up a question on his final, he made the class redo the problem even though the window for administering finals had ended, all without apologizing . Save yourself the trouble and avoid his class.
The most miserable academic experience of my life. Lectures don't prepare you whatsoever for the problem sets (which are endless) or the exams. Guilts students into going to his office hours, which are always a crowded, disorganized mess. He might come off as friendly early on, but don't fall for it. He's totally unsympathetic and completely fake.
The class I took, he didn't grade the homework. Homework was easy at first but eventually, his lectures won't cover how to do his homework. You would have to do your own research and studying to complete the homework. Textbook didn't seem to help much. The course I took covered a very niche topic so it was difficult doing the homework.
I took Game Theory online and it was asynchronous (such a bad idea) and there were up to 3 v hard psets a week. The tests were impossible and proctored w proctorU. Not a good professor and not understanding of how hard his class was.
He uses the dumbest grading system I have ever seen. Exams are 94% of the grade and HW is 6%. Exams are graded to fit a distribution. If you got a 90% on an exam, but the rest of the class got an 91%, you would receive an F. He only gives out like 1 or 2 A's. He gives no feedback on HW and he overcomplicates notation for no clear reason.
If you can find an alternative class, take it. If your life doesn't depend on taking a class with him. Nobody should have to go through such an emotional roller coaster. The work is not worth the grade. Other classes will suffer. DO NOT.
Overall he was a terrible lecturer the only way a student can hope to pass is if they attend his office hours. I do not recommend you take a class with this guy. you can learn a lot more and enjoy a class much more from any other lecturer. arguably the worst instructor I've ever had in my tenure as a student.
Hes a nice guy, but is a terrible teacher. Weekly problem sets take several hours and your lucky to get over half credit. Tests are nothing like the problem sets or lecture slides so are impossible to prep for. Hard to get in touch with outside office hours. Overall, brutal class that is not worth the time or effort for a mediocre grade.
Turner was very kind and did a great job explaining concepts in lecture. All homework was on MyLab and was very easy if you read/skimmed the textbook chapter. He allowed cheat sheets on exams and the final was not cumulative. He used competitive grading to deflate everybody's grade as is standard for the econ department.
Turner is a very nice and accommodating professor, but it's easier to teach the material to yourself. The resources he gave us were really helpful and explained the concepts clearer than his lectures (e.g. textbook, MyLab, slides). Open-ended test questions (there's like 2 of them) do not reflect what we've learned in class.
bro actually wanna trick us on the HW. It is not that deep dude. He uses wordplays in the HW, actually wild.
Easily the worst professor I've had so far. He is not very approachable outside of class at all. He uses a dumb grading system (in my opinion) because even if you do well on an exam, you could get a very bad grade based on the bell curve for the class. His lectures and homeworks ARE NOT COHESIVE with the tests, so there's no way to prepare for them
Homework and lectures DO NOT REFLECT what's on the tests, making them impossible to prepare for. not approachable at all. i would give him a 0, but that's not possible, so I give him a 1. problem sets take forever. bell curve for exams makes it hard to do well, even if you get a good grade you'll probably end up with a B/C. avoid him if possible!
He is incompetent. He messed up the tests by including units we had not covered, then when students pointed this out during the exam period, just said that was his mistake and did not allot extra time for students who wasted time on them. At least he made those count for 0 points. During lectures, he does math wrong and simply recites the textbook.
Sergio has the worst grading scale so far. Homework cannot prepare for the test. Good job sergio
The class isn't as hard as people make it out to be, grading is rough. lectures are boring, you can teach yourself the content somewhat easily with the slides. Homework isn't too time consuming but doesn't help. Turner seems nice but and I think he is a little overhated. If you took Econ in hs and did well you know all the content alr.
Sergio an absolute chiller not the greatest professor though. If you have any knowledge about Econ from the Ap courses it's not bad at all.
Turner completely ruined my interest in economics, he is an awful professor, the amount of homework assigned is ridiculous, he has no care or understanding for his students circumstances, he teaches off the slides, always gives his own controversial personal opinions, I've stopped going to lectures because the exact same thing is on the slides
Do not be scared by his rating- Turner is a great professor if you are willing to put in the work. Yes, his lectures might veer off topic sometimes, but all of the material the course covers is in the textbook and on videos and slideshows he puts online. You HAVE to use these resources to succeed- but if you do the class is easy.
The fact that turned would give us homework over THANKSGIVING BREAK just goes to show that he has no consideration for his students. DO NOT TAKE TURNER
Terrible professor. Only a little bit of lecture material covers the homework and tests, so whats even the point of going to lecture? Just read the textbook yourself and do the online practice questions and go to recitation. On the good side, if you have insomnia then prof. Turner is perfect because one lecture and you'll be cured.
Dr. Tuner is often quite opaque and difficult to get in touch with. While he occasionally tells a good story (the John Nash is great) he lecture essentially straight of the slides the textbook company provides. Honestly it was sometimes difficult to stay awake in his class. Big variation in the quality of the TA's. Easy tests though.
Easier to just teach the material to yourself than going to his lectures. His lectures work better than melatonin, if you need sleep this is the class for you! Homework is time consuming and does not prepare you for the test. But, his slides and the TAs are really helpful.
Insomnia curer, greatest reading Asmrtist of all time. His tests are ok, but even when you do well he curves you down. Homework are also on a curve. So if you miss one question you might be on the 60th percentile. Surprise!!!!!!!!!
Had him for econometrics. Honestly not a bad teacher and a nice guy. He is not very accessible though and lectures can be dry. Exams had overly complex phrasing of questions.
He is not a good teacher, but the class itself is not very difficult, don't let the reviews scare you off. You kind of have to read the textbook chapters and teach yourself the content because that is exactly what the tests are on (lots of simple definition questions and not much math) and listening to his lectures alone is not enough to do well.
Lectures are heavy content; 3 tests take 68% of your overall grade; Very complicated GPA calculation and very unclear; Use percentile to calculate GPA, so you never know your GPA until the last second; Test grading is not timely and you get rare feedback. Has lots of OH but not helpful
He did nothing well: awful lectures, tedious homework, poor communication with TAs, and badly written exams he clearly didn't review. Skip lectures, read the textbook. Please for you own sake avoid him. It's kind of sad because he seems like a nice guy. Baffles me how can he spend so much time talking and not teach A THING!
I spoke to Turner outside of class multiple times and can attest that he is an honest & kind guy who cares about his students. Issues: Unreasonable curve (fault of the department), lecture time is better spent sleeping, zero correlation between homework and tests, & you can receive an A (raw score before the curve haha!) by just reading the book.
Going to class was useless; he only read off the slides that were available on Canvas. He claimed that the tests would be like the homework, but they were much more difficult and had more complicated questions about things we did not learn. I learned about economics, but he was not a good teacher.
Professor Turner doesn't do much. He holds lectures, but you don't really learn anything. Most of my learning came from the textbook, but even then, that wasn't enough to truly understand anything. There is so much homework, and it wasn't even helpful all the time because they differed from the exam questions. Also, the grading scheme is terrible.
Professor Turner is clearly very enthusiastic about economics. However, communication is a challenge. Turner is very upfront about the economics downward grading curve, but it makes this class a challenge. Lectures not as effective as textbook and sometimes outright confusing. If you know you like economics take this class, but if not DO NOT.
Turner was not a good econ professor. I really didn't learn much from the lectures, and I found it most helpful to just thoroughly read the textbook before each exam. The homework was assigned weekly and was time consuming, but not very difficult. Nice, knowledgeable guy but doesn't lecture in a digestible manner.
Don't be scared to take this class! Turner is a terrible lecturer, but he's knowledgeable in office hours. The textbook is expensive, but really good, and comes with helpful studying software. The content is like medium for difficulty, but the book is super helpful, and u go over practice problems in recitation. Attendance is not mandatory.
Lectures are pretty boring and slow, and the Pearson homework is super annoying. Didn't love the class. That being said, he is actually very smart and occasionally drops riveting information on you, but then it's back to bugging. Definitely someone I would go to for advice, class itself isn't too hard. Just kind of boring.
EC5 wasn't that bad. All slides + lecture recordings are posted on Canvas. I stopped going to class ~1.5 months in and just followed those instead, and I still got an A (w/ no prior econ experience). Exams are open note *and* with a cheat sheet. Only homework is MyLab with 2 free retries per question (ie easy 100 there if you put in minimal effort)
No good, so bad. Beware. Stay away
Economics itself can be an interesting topic, and it's sad that many people's first academic experience with it will be with Turner.
Professor Turner's lectures were exceedingly boring and the test's never align with the lecture notes. He reads off of the slides that are oftentimes very outdated and not in tune with current economics. The tests are very difficult as well. If you take this class be prepared to self teach for a majority of the topics.
His lectures are lackluster and often miss topics included on exams, reading the textbook is recommended. It is difficult to reach him outside of class, and grading is nebulous. Exams and class structure overall are incredibly messy and lazily put together. Every assignment (homework included) is graded on a curve, so exams are worth a lot.
He goes on the most irrelevant tangents about things that are not on exams. His exams are solely based on the textbook, which is different than the slides he uses in class. The way this class is structured really encourages people to skip class, which many people do. Please try to take any other econ prof.
Reads off the slides every class. The upside is that all lectures are recorded, and attendance is not mandatory. Homework is boring and repetitive. But open-book exams make up for it. Get ready for the most monotonous lectures you could imagine. Overall, good introduction to economics but definitely not the most engaging professor I've ever had.
If you have even a spark of interest in the study of economics, do not take any class taught by Sergio Turner. He somehow manages to make even the most engaging topics monotonous. Homework is unrelated to the lecture, and the tests, despite being open note, are hopeless. You have no chance, especially while most of the class is using ChatGPT.
Get ready to teach economics to yourself. While tests are open note, it doesn't make up for the fact that he is a terrible professor. Lectures are boring and he once showed conspiracy theory TikTok's. This class will require so much work because you have to learn it yourself and the tests are so confusing.
Actually the worst prof at tufts. Please please please try to take ec8 instead. Uncaring, unrational thinker, selfish. I actually can't put into words how much I despise turner. Goodbye. Save urself while u can
Professor Turner is actually better than what most people say about him. The way he teaches his class might be a little boring to some because of his tone. However, you could definitely receive a good grade as long as you tried in his class.
man this guy is so sweet but I really dont think hes a good lecturer. I just showed up to class and read the book while he talked, its definitely a DIY education... Kinda unclear what his rubrics are and be prepared to see like 400 typos on the tests
He is a nice person, but one of the worst professors I have ever had. Didn't make the lecture interesting. Reads off the slides and doesn't come prepared for class at all. With that being said, if this is a req for your major and you need to take it, it is survivable and you will be fine.
Really boring. The fixed grading that is departmentally applied is really disappointing because you can try really hard but others students cheat and mess up the curve. Did really good on the final but still got a B+. He is still a nice guy.
Turner doesn't deserve the hate. If you go to class and pay attention (though it can be hard at times), you will do fine. People come into EC5 thinking they don't need to go to class and set themselves up for failure. Please at least try before you skip every lecture, and if you read the textbook, go to class, and STUDY for test, you will be ok.
I'm sure he's a nice guy but not much effort into attending to his students. I get it's an intro class with kids who aren't interested, so that's probably why, but I wouldn't take his class if there's an option not to. He speaks very very quietly also, so super impossible to hear him. Not an interesting course, but again it's intro so I get it.
Extremely hard class with really long homeworks and boring lectures.
Don't take him if possible, but if you need to it's doable if ur ok with prob not getting an A. Not a crazy workload but hw assignments can be infuriating. The main issue is the departmentally applied curve, so pretty much even if you do well it's likely you'll end up with a B. Lectures are boring asf and no one shows up, tests can be pretty bad
He teaches fabulously well by interlinking concepts with real life examples. Also, after class if you want to stay back and seek his advice on which economic classes to take to fulfill the economics major requirements, he can be very helpful and help plan your semester out. He can resolve your doubts in a simplified manner.
Really awful at communicating economic principles, often gets off topic and tests rarely reflect the material. just have the textbook and you'll be fine
this class is not real. somehow every lecture links back to california's fentanyl epidemic. the way he talks about drug addicts and unhoused populations is unsettling. the grade is two midterms and a final (homework is 10%). exams are multiple choice and not a good test of your knowledge.
Class is graded on hw, 2 midterms, and a final which are heavily curved. Take Ec8 if possible, he easily gets sidetracked by talking about drugs and you need to buy the online textbook for homework. He doesn't explain well, but everything is on the textbook and slideshows he posts. If you aren't an econ major, don't take his class.
Honestly Speaking, Big Surg is not a bad professor. He has a obsession for talking about drugs, his lectures are quite long, but he provides ALL the info you need for tests. People are going to complain because they come in EC5, skip class, not study, and they blame it on Big Surg. if EC5 is mandatory for you, you will do well if you study.
Truly like the least engaging class ever, which is a shame because I do genuinely like Sergio. You will need to study a lot for the tests, especially if you have no prior econ experience, particularly because of the departmentally implemented curve that pits you against the grades of other students. Sometimes is hard to predict what will be on test
Really bad at explaining things. Often went on random long tangents. Grade is determined relative to your classmates'. Good things: nice guy, cheat sheet allowed on all exams, weekly MyLabs are slight grade boosters. Very messy slideshows, but posted on Canvas. Many people skip class and opt to teach themselves. Overall okay if you're good at econ.
Be prepared to pretty much teach yourself. If you are very new to Econ, buy the textbook because the lectures alone will not help you pass. There are nice curves on the tests, but that's because they're hard and your whole grade depends on them.
He seems like a nice guy but its really hard to stay engaged when he is lecturing, despite putting away all distractions. Skips slides fast so its hard to take notes, you just have go home and rewatch the lectures. despite studying very hard for tests and being sure you know EVERYTHING you come into the exam and somehow have no idea whats going on
Sergio isn't as bad as many people say he is. Yes, he is a bad lecturer; you have to teach a lot of the material on your own, and the EC5 curve sucks (department's fault, not his). However, he is accessible outside of class and was nice and helpful during office hours when I was studying for tests. If you take EC5 seriously, you will be fine.
Terrible lecturer. Assigns 6 assignments per week and homeworks are insanely long. Exams are nothing like homeworks. This man should genuinely be fired.
horrible and the worst
No point in showing up for class, he reads off pre-recorded lectures, slides all found on Canvas. Got an A- by watching lectures at home studying textbook, only went to class for the 3 tests and the first class... Turner is a terrible professor, puts almost no effort into this EC-5 intro class, probably because he teaches it so much.
This class is so boring. Sergio makes no attempt to keep his students engaged and often uses examples that don't make sense (unnecessary references). Try to avoid him at all costs.
Sergio isn't the worst professor at tufts but he's close... lectures are useless so get ready to teach yourself everything. Tests are full of poorly written questions and only barely related to homework. Grades follow a curve so have fun getting 95 and its an A-
