Worst prof you could possibly get. He takes him vast experience of interpreting Literature and deriving meaning from it, and expects that his students interpretation skills are equal to him own. Exam questions are vague in explanation. If you have a differing view on a work that contradicts his own view YOU ARE WRONG no matter what. AVOID AVOID!!
Very disappointed, extremely unclear on assignments and exam preperation. Avoid at all costs. Painful class
He likes to be right on everything he says. He gives little to notes in class, so you better know what you are doing before you come in. As long as you participate in discussions he will like you. Tests are pretty easy if you did the readings and attended class.
Very hard marker picks his favorites and then only they will get good marks. His explanation for your mark is useless and he has no reasons. His classes are boring and a waste of time. Avoid if possible just bad all around.
Does nothing but read from the textbook and expects you to know how to write perfectly.
Well, he's not super terrible. He has passion for literature and he loves philosophy behind literature works. Sergiy almost has no accent, but it can be hard to follow his thoughts during the lectures. Easy midterms - just read notes and staff. Hard on papers, I think he gives you much lower mark, no matter how hard you try. generally he's ok.
Awful, very unclear. I enjoy English classes generally and this was nothing short of painful , he is so unclear on assignments and marking. Seriously avoid
Interesting class; prof was helpful but should really speak up. Attendance is required, as there are many discussions. You have to pay attention to and participate in the discussions, as he tests on them, and there are no notes.
Great professor! Once you get used to his accent, he is quite engaging and has a good sense of humour. As long as you come to class and do all of the readings, you'll do very well. Midterm and final were based primarily on classroom discussion. He doesn't give a great outline for the paper, but is very helpful if you go to him in person.
Never got higher than a 70% in his class. He marks hard but besides that I don't have anything bad to say about the guy. Cracks these little jokes here and there that gets the whole class laughing.
Pretty good professor. I didn't much care for the course itself but I did find his lectures intellectually stimulating. He often asks questions and calls on students to give their answer to the class. Overall, pretty decent and interesting prof.
Hardest marker, if he doesn't like you or agree with the way you write he will dock marks for the smallest & useless things.
His classes are long and boring and he is sometimes difficult to understand. He is a tough grader and has high expectations with unclear grading. Overall going to class will probably help you, but if you can avoid him! He assigns a lot of papers and assignments and overall is a basic class. I wouldn't suggest him or take a class with him again!
He definitely is not a business teacher, reads off powerpoints for lectures, doesn't show any enthusiasm or encouragement for students. Overall not a good teacher, very mono-tone and grades are awarded based on first dictating your letter grade then assigning corresponding percentage.
Helpful with papers and gives you extra credit if you work for it. Only downside is that he is a dull lecturer and very uninspiring.
Dull teaching style and loves to simply read off his computer. The kind of professor that makes students want to skip class and read the notes themselves.
Great prof! Sergi made his rubrics very clear and the material we had to write on interesting which made writing papers a lot easier. By far the easiest course I have taken so far, minimal work required. He does anything he can to help you get the best grade possible. Lectures can be dry, but participation is 10% so showing up pays off
Nice lecturer easy to go with. teaching style is generally based on power point. Everything he teaches is already been provided in student resource prior to class. can skip class not very lenient with projects and quiz and essays. Hard marker sometimes expect what he teaches.
His lectures are pointless. Tests are focused on more on the readings including the midterm and final. Exams are pretty easy, if you don't know the question ALWAYS right something and he will give part marks even if its a terrible answer. Uses textbook for pretty much everything. Has an ascent but still easy to understand. Doesn't use blackboard
An understanding professor that's neat and concise in his teaching/presentation. He's always willing to answer question/concerns inside class and during his office hours outside class. For full participation marks, you should show up and be fairly consistent in your discussion activity. I would recommend him to anyone planning on taking English.
Though he is definitely knowledgable about english, he lacks the ability to really convey his knowledge to the class. Most assignments we were left figuring things out ourselves and assuming the criteria he wanted. He did reply to my emails well if I had questions, but he really doesn't make lectures worth your time.
Hes a decent teacher and nice person but he grades really tough and class participation is extremely important.. some of his classes are based mainly out of reading through the textbook.. an he is kind of hard to understand him through his accent.
Tough teacher as far as grading goes but is fair and gives feedback. Lots of tests but he goes over the material on them a lot. Marked by a lot of different items and very few actual essays. Understanding and caring if you are having issues just talk to him.
Sergiy is a great choice for an intro english class. He's a tough, fair grader and doesn't try to manipulate or abuse you into working harder. He has a dark sense of humor which is awesome but the delivery of the grammar work is pretty dry. He could try to make that more engaging.
Sergiy is a great professor he is very kind considerate and tries his best to make the class fun. There are times class may seem dry but he makes a lot of jokes so time goes by fast in his class. The final and midterms are straightforward as long as you read the stories that he went over in class. He's a tough grader but fair grader.
Sergiy is a really nice guy, don't get me wrong, however his lectures have nothing to do with your assignments. He spends every class talking about grammar and punctuation even though we will have an essay worth 30% due the next class and he says nothing about it. You can. always email him and he is happy to help, but his class is pretty DIY.
His lectures are dry and the way he marks is ridiculous. First day of class he told us that he speakers four different languages and English is his worse(why are you an English prof then?). Hard to understand sometimes, he talked super quietly and seemed to lack the ability to convoy info well. AVOID UNLESS YOU WANT TO TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING
Analysis and Argument is a fairly dull class, and Yak's lectures didn't help with that. He is a nice guy who gives good feedback, but his material was really difficult for most of our class, which was mostly made up of business majors who kept skipping and didn't care about English. I learned some things from him, but I found it hard to focus.
Would not take his class again. Showing up seemed pointless because he went on random tangents and was very difficult to follow. He also wasn't good at answering questions you asked. It was an easy class though and if you're a good self teacher then you might do okay.
Super nice guy! He marks hard and can be a little hard to follow sometimes due to his accent but he is always willing to help you out. He really wants you to succeed but it is a heavy class with a lot of reading and there are participation marks so attendance is necessary!
I honestly loved Sergiy, I had him for 102 and 103. He is so so willing to accommodate his students ( he gave me many extensions on papers) and is willing to sit down with you to discuss papers etc. His lectures aren't always related to what your assignments are on but he responds to emails asap and is always willing to meet to answer any questions
So far I like him
Regretted taking this class. Lectures are boring and he marks hard. May have a good heart but he seems arrogant and specific in his marking ways and has high standards. Readings are boring and he doesnt post anything online so you may want to show up
DO NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN ENGL 102 FIRST. For your assignments, he expects you to know how to write your papers so if this is your first English class in uni, SWITCH PROFS!
Hes really nice but hes a tough marker. Like the guy has a PHD in writing what do u expect. Dont recommend his class
He is a tough grader but enjoyed going to his class. Sometimes it may not be really clear what he expects in the assignment papers, but he will help if you ask.
Sergiy is one of the nicest professors I have met. He is genuine, respectful, and funny! Many of these comments misrepresent his classes. If you attend class, it is an EASY A. As long as you put in the hard work, and show that you are engaged and care, you will succeed. Of course, he is going to be a challenging marker, that is his job. Great prof
Sergiy is probably one of the the nicest profs Ive had so far! He only tests on the PowerPoints too which it nice. Personally I didnt find him to be a tough marker. Hes really laid back and funny, and hes very accommodating and allows for paper extensions if you ask for it ahead of time.
You must attend all his classes. He marks very hard, even when you meet him in person. He's very funny and always willing to help. His quizzes are easy, they are the exact example questions he uses in his powerpoints. You need to read all the short stories he tells us to read and make good note of them. Overall he's a good prof.
Serg is such a good prof. He is funny, kind, and very helpful. He responded to my emails very quickly and if you show up to class his exams are easy. He is an extremely fair marker. He loves participation, so I would encourage that. I'm a shy person but he appreciates if you show any type of interest. I would 100% take a class with him again.
Sergiy is one of the best professors I have encountered in my years at MacEwan. He can be a tough grader but as long as you try your best, listen to his feedback, and engage in class you can easily achieve an A. Sergiy is a very caring and accommodating professor. I would without a doubt take a course with him again.
Serge was by far my favorite professor this past semester. He was funny and prepared you quite well for the assignments he presented. He's a very fair marker and if you put in a bit of effort, you will do good in his class.
Although S does make you work for your grade, I felt it isn't extreme enough to select the tough grader category. With how accessible he is outside of class and how willing he is to help, if you put in the work you'll do just fine- But I would not suggest taking with him if you want a free ride easy A. That said, I overall really enjoyed this class
Professor Yakovenko is a caring prof who is a relatively easy marker. He is always accessible outside of class if you need help and delivers material pretty well. That being said, you should always attend class as he never uses slides and no material is posted after each class. If you miss a class you'll be behind in course material
Very good. Gives amazing feedback and forces you to learn the material through class participation which is amazing and helps you if you need it. Would definitely take again
Sergiy is a great prof. I loved his lectures! Hes engaging, humorous and always prepared to teach. Quizzes are very easy- key: do all the practices in his ppt. Hes not a hard nor an easy marker; hes very fair and gives clear grading criteria. He provides feedback on our rough drafts to help usreach better grades and he replies quickly to emails
Within the first couple weeks, I was very skeptical of prof. Yakovenko, his accent was very thick and hard to understand. English has never been my strong suit but he genuinely cares about his students and wants to see you succeed. He replies very quickly to emails and will help you at all costs. I would definitely recommend people taking his class
There's no online lectures in this intro class. All I can say about Sergiy is that he's very good at responding in a reasonable time whenever you have any questions via email. He's good at giving feedback too. There's a lot of homework in this class but I think you would have that regardless of what teacher you have for English.
For online, there were no live lectures. This was difficult since there was not a lot of instruction for assignments. He also is a very tough grader. However, he is willing to help and answers emails quickly.
This guy is so boring. His online course for COMP-103 is painful. He overuses online journals and discussions which are on the most boring books known to mankind.
I took this class online and though he doesnt have lecture videos he replies really fast to emails. If you ask him for an extension he gives you a couple days, I asked about 3 times and he gave me an extension every time I asked. Overall hes a very chill prof.
This was a fantastic English class for me personally for just starting university. I learned everything I need to be successful going forward. His marking is tough for papers but I was able to get better each time because of it. Classes were informative once we got into analyzing works assigned but grammar section was difficult.
Great and caring prof. If you show up to the optional in person lectures he will make an extra effort to help you. Workload was fairly light and only 3 essays with a final exam. Marked easy and gave good essay feedback
Sergiy is an excellent prof! The topic was gothic literature which made the class really interesting. We read a couple of novels and short stories and watched a few films. Only 2 papers and a final which weren't bad at all. You can get an easy A if you put in the effort and ask questions. Overall great class!
He is a great prof. He is funny, kind, and very helpful. He responded to my emails very quickly and if you show up to classes his exams and assignments are easy. He is a fair marker. He did use a lot of journal responses but they weren't too bad. When the class moved to in-person it just got better :) I would 100% take a class with him again.
Sergiy was an amazing prof both online and in person. He gave great feedback and willing to clarify anything if needed. There were 8 journal entries, a midterm, and a final - which were all straightforward. He kept lectures light and funny which made them interesting and go by fast. I would take him again!
I really enjoyed Sergiy's class. He is positive in his criticisms, aimed at helping a student develop. He even made poetry enjoyable. He's able to deal with opposing views.
Professor Sergiy Yakovenko is a great professor. He is always ready to help students and he gives clear instructions for assignments. His marks are fair and he gives lots of feedback. He will often respond to emails no later than a couple of hours! Even outside school hours. I would definitely take this professor again.
This prof was nice. He marks you for attendance every single day and 10% of your overall grade is for your participation in the class. Only a couple papers, and he gives a lot of feedback which is nice. Numerous activities/ assignments are handed in to be graded. He makes good jokes to keep the class engaged.
I really enjoyed this prof as he gave good feedback on papers and was a very fair marker. His classes were informative if you payed attention, and he usually gave help with organizing the writing of papers. He graded by 3 papers, a couple quizzes and participation - everything had a clear outline/criteria.
Absolutely loved him he is so kind and funny. His papers are slightly difficult but my best advice is to go for help at his office hours. He is strict on grammar so asking him for feedback will boost your grade.
Sergiy is a very knowledgeable prof. His lectures can sometimes be boring, but he does a great job of making the material more engaging. Attendance is mandatory. He is always available to answer emails or meet in person or online. His papers can be challenging, but he can always explain his instructions again. Would recommend!
Super great prof! Essays are graded fairly. Tests are exactly what he teaches on the PowerPoint slides. Makes his lectures entertaining and chooses great material to teach. Big on grammar so watch out for that. Loves class discussion on any topic. Definitely make sure to bring up Gilmore girls or friends.
Answers emails fast, slightly hard marker, lectures were usually very dry but he does try to make some jokes which is nice, super strict on grammar and grammar quizzes were quite tricky, participation and attendance do matter as 5% of your mark is participation and he marks attendance everyday.
Very nice guy and overall good professor. I'm not very good at English but managed to get a B which isn't bad by any standards. He is a fair grader but one criticism is that he should make the instructions clearer.
Actually a really good prof. he marks fairly and gives clear instructions on the proper way to write papers. I purposely took him again for English 103. First English class I've actually looked forward to!
Sergiy was the best English teacher I have ever had. His course included three grammar quizzes and three papers. His lectures were quite enjoyable, especially when in a 50-minute class. The papers were easy, and I didn't feel stressed at all. One thing to note: during grammar sections in the course, he will make you participate and try examples.
Dr. Yakovenko was an amazing prof. He gives out marks for participation. His feedback on essay assignments were always very informative. There are a couple course readings for this class, the textbook wasn't required but it helped to read it. For the grammar units he will have you read out loud examples and correct them with the class.
The best prof you could ever have. Never felt anxious doing any work. It was always fun!
Sergiy was an awesome prof! I had him for both ENGL 102 and 103, he responds to emails fast and is thorough in answering your questions and concerns, also always very kind and respectful. his lectures can be a little bit dry but he teaches his material well and prepares you for assessments. Overall, awesome guy, take him if you get the chance!
Sergiy is a nice guy, don't get me wrong; But I chose ENGL 104 to have more fun and unique media (I heard another 104 class did watchman??) but all he picked for readings were old short stories I would've expected to find in high school, not University level.. We did 2 of Poe's work back to back and now we're reading Freud theories?? What is this?
Good Prof. Prepares you for everything, passionate about classes and easy marker.
He is a nice guy, but will quiz people on material knowing the class does not understand what is going on. Hard marker and can be boring lectures but will give good feedback. He is not a bad prof but definitely would not recommend
Lost of reading, some he goes through in class, some he doesn't. Hard marker but gives pretty good feedback. Will give quizzes but there are times he moves on during lecture even though people are confused and doesn't always fully answer questions. Funny and cares if you do good in the class but isn't the best at explaining.
He is a tough grader, but does give good feedback. His in class lectures are painfull to attend, they are long boring and he even jokes about the class being asleep. he is also a bit diffucult to undersatnd cuase the broken english.
He's a pretty easy marker and any reading we had to do was never more than a couple pages. He always gave examples to look at for assignments and his quizzes are very straightforward. Overall is a nice guy and I would definitely take him again
Dr. Yakovenko is a very nice man, especially in regards to providing assistance to students, however, he does not clearly explain what he is exactly looking for. I personally would not take his class again as he knows what he is looking for and knows what he wants you to say, but will not clue you in on it. Does take some effort to do well.
Was nervous to take this class as 17th cent lit is not my fav, but he chose some really interesting readings! there is a participation mark but it's not hard to do well, tougher on essay marking but only because he wants to see you do well! I've improved so much as a writer from his courses! 100% also reccomend him for engl 102/103! he's also funny
I think Prof Yakovenko is a funny guy and a fair marker. He does often make jokes but it's best to sit closer to the front of the class so you can hear him better. He has monthly grammar quizzes and a few essays to be graded on. There is no final exam! Take him if you can!
Really nice and a fair marker!
Serg is one of the profs when i see his name, ill take his course. he is knowledgable, and caring, his lectures can be a bit dry but you can tell he knows alot about the stories, and enjoys them so much. he is also quiet funny, and the stories he chooses are entertaining. as long as you read the stories you will do fine
your average professor, not the most fun class, but quite easy to pass. Only 1-2 time consuming readings, others not bad at all (but odd topics lol). 7% participation marks. Group discussions with each reading - told to come prepared with answers, but honestly not necessary. Go to class! Midterms/essays are based on what he says.
Your average professor, not as entertaining but quite easy. Only 1-3 long readings, rest aren't bad. Takes attendance and has group discussions per reading. 3 online classes for the quizzes. Physical textbook is recommended - short essay is open book. Go to class! listen to his interpretations of each story, reading isn't needed but recommended.
He is so knowledgeable about literature, that it made me interested! Participation is encouraged during discussion. Stories were entertaining for the most part, some more so than others. Responds to emails fast and gives great responses. Average marker, he is strict with grammar mechanics! His interpretations of the stories are always so insightful
His lectures can be dry and he expects participation in the class discussions. He can be very insightful when discussing the assigned readings. Your mark only comes from participation and a few in-class written asssignments/tests. The class is pretty interesting if you just do the assigned readings.
Lectures can be a bit dry but it is the fault of the subject matter, I really liked the literature that he chose for us to read and his takes on them. He does expect participation in discussions
He genuinely cares about his material and gives amazing, detailed feedback. I respect this man to the fullest extent and am trying to join more of his classes in the future. He doesn't grade that harshly either. All around great man. Just attend and participate.
Serhiy is passionate about his work & he makes sure the tests/essays cover only what he's discussed in class. Everything is very straight-forward, he tells you what he wants to see. He's not a harsh marker either. He gives all the resources/readings online so you don't have to spend money. Would definitely take him again :)
Serhiy is so passionate about literature & he makes sure the tests/essays cover only what he explicitly discussed in class. Everything is very straight-forward, he tells you what he wants to see. He's not a harsh marker either. He gives all the resources/readings online so you don't have to spend money. Would definitely take him again.
Despite learning objectives being unclear, the evaluative components were fair and Dr. Yakovenko doesn't grade too harshly, though little feedback is provided. Attendance is mandatory, but lectures very dry. It's crucial to take copious notes. There's a lot of reading, but materials are all provided for free, which was deeply appreciated.
