Very organised. Gives handouts to summarize what will be taught. Very clear. Doesn't grade HW's but if you don't miss any classes easy to get an A.
Nice Guy.. would not take him as a professor again. Bounces around in notes, not clear. Need to do alot of outside work!!! Tough class that was made more difficult because of his teaching ways!!
Tough to Follow, made the course harder. Shot you down when asking questions. Not a teacher i would reccommend
I re took this class because he's an **** and got an A with Prof. YOung.
I think he was a very good professor. He was one of the better Calc teacher I've ever had. Classmates think he's unclear, but I seem to understand him. He's really a nice guy and I think he's easy to understand, it's the content that's difficult.
He doesnt explain clearly, grades tests based on answers not work.
Wow this guy is bad. He is arrogant and his teaching style is terrible. If you take his class, expect to work your butt off just to get a C. Do yourself a favor, find another section, or take the class another quarter.
Great professor. Started out badly but ended up getting a B.
Terrible teacher. Hard to understand sometimes because of his accent. Does not grade homework and if you want to know anything he tells you to see him during office hours. A rock as a teacher could have made the class more exciting. Definately do not recommend taking this class with him. Not very hard material but he will do his best to make it hard.
started the course out badly and ended up with a B. sure he has an accent, but not a heavy accent. he means what he says.
He has a strange teaching style that I and many others found difficult to learn from. You have to do a lot of outside studying and work in order to understand what's going on. Wouldnt recomend him 2 anyone.
TERRIBLE teacher and very arrogant! He has a bad teaching style that is hard to learn from. Taking him as a professor will be like having the responsibility to teach yourself!
He is a good teacher, but is horrible if you go to his office hours. He'll only confuse you more if you do so! Accent is barable and is a good guy!
Awful teacher, he runs through problems way too quickly and looks at you dumbfounded if you do not understand. His homework and tests are graded very harshly. He provided a re-take since our whole class pretty much failed, but there was barely an improvement. Stay far away, you'd be teaching yourself everything.
Straightforward, clear in class and a consistent grader. If you're good to him he'll be good to you.
he is a very good professor, very helpful, usually goes out of way to help you. An easy A if you can understand him and do exactly what he asks you to do
This guy is terrible... first he talks so quiet and has a rough accent, it becomes difficult to understand. Secondly he rushes through all of his problems, never stops to make you get the material. Lastly, his tests are very hard, prepare to teach yourself and work a long time on the homework.
Had for matrix algebra. i read these possts before taking his class and I AM TELLING YOU DO NOT TAKE IT. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT. i didnt believe them, but BELIEVE THEM. IF NO ONE REGISTERS WE CAN GET THIS **** GONE.
This guy will treat you like you're in 6th grade. He stops talking if others are talking and demands that you ask him questions and not others. I'm just surprised that he doesn't make us put our heads down and turn off the lights until the class is quiet. He is a very harsh grader and will not compromise his office hours.
This guy is terrible, he is very hard to follow and he moves so quickly your lost from the start. His tests are insane, you have to know how to solve some of the hardest equations with barely any practice. The homework is long and difficult, he grades harsh and is not helpful at all, so expect to learn on your own and read thoroughly.
Crazy hard grader. I got a 60% on a quiz even though I had the right answers but I didn't have the variables clearly defined at the top. Explains things well but talks very quiet. If he sees you use your computer too much he will tell you to put it away.
a.he treats you like elemantary school kids. makes me & my friend sit in the front. b. he takes off the dumbest points on exams. you get the answers right + show your work but hell still find a way - and rarely any partial credit. i dont find the material difficult but this guy is crazy
A really stern taskmaster type who treats college students like unruly kids; hard to follow, and overly harsh in grading (all your work must be shown, and match what he was expecting to the letter).
He's not as bad as everyone says. When you have a question he answers it very clearly, and is typically very specific. He teaches a lot better than the other Data1 professor from what I've seen. Quizs are easy if you pay attention in class, and the tests aren't extremely hard if you've studied for them.
His teaching style was confusing and disorganized. He also made 90% of our grade based on tests. It definitely takes a lot of teaching yourself to pass this class with this professor!
he's ok..i got an A for this course..if u follow what he wanted, then u'll get an A.
A very smart professor compared to many of the others who can barely perform basic algebraic computations... Not the easiest class. If you do the work and show your work, then you'll do fine. Nice guy too
He was rude throughout the course and generally un helpful. Would not suggest taking a class with this teacher
He's actually not a bad guy. He is very tough, kind of expects perfection. If you have a class with him and are struggling, just show some initiative and see him during office hours...he's very willing to help in any way. He will come across somewhat condescending, just get over it and you'll do fine.
Lectures and explains things well, is a pretty nice guy and willing to help students. But grades extremely harshly, gives only an hour for exams (lectures the first hour), doesn't explain points taken off well, and requires full explanations in sentences alongside a correct answer for full points. TL;DR: Don't take him if you can avoid it.
Kumar is a good guy but at times is unclear. The class wasn't too bad and weekly quizes were predictable. Heavy on proofs.
Kumar is not as bad as others say. He is heavy on proofs and grades fairly harsh but if you do the homework he assigns and prepare for quizzes and tests you can do very well in his class. Runs a tight shift in class.
Very rude to students, if you make any noise or even look at a friend he will not hesitate to stop the class lecture to glare at you. Gives ~5 hw/wk, 1-2 Quizzes/wk, 1 lab/wk, you are not allowed to touch your computer during class unless specifically asked to. Will force everyone into participating. DA2 for learn minitab but he only teaches math.
The professor isn't bad; in fact, he would be one of the best if you came to class just to learn and lecture. That being said; he dislikes any interruptions and the quizes and exams are fair but somewhat difficult (problems right from the book).
Dr. Kumar might be the best teacher I have ever had. He makes it clear from the start of the first class that he wants your full attention for all 50 minutes every day, and does a good job of holding it. Learns everyone's name, startsends class on time, makes his expectations clear, and grades low weight assignments much more strictly than tests.
Kumar is a good teacher and wants your full attention when in class. He's pretty tough when it comes to grading and tests and one wrong answer can take you for an A to a C on the test. Overall, his teaching methods didn't really fit well with me and I found myself getting bad grades when I never have before even though I felt I knew the material.
Quoted a dumbldore quote: "Help is always there to those who ask it". He is very organized and runs a tight shift class. Tests are somewhat on the difficult side and he grades tough. He goes very fast on the board and a bit sloppy hand-writing. Other then that he is a freindly professor and wants to see you learn.
He may seem helpful but no meter what won't give you a fair grade overly harsh. He has no regard for students wellbeing and it doesn't matter if you go to office hours or buy into his system. DON'T TAKE KUMAR
I had Professor Kumar this semester. I genuinely feel he is a good professor BUT only if you feel confident about the material. I struggled in the class with him due to the difficult exams and that's basically the only thing that is valued with this course.
You have to study outside of the class if you are not confident in the material. He is kind of a tough grader but if you do all the questions he recommends and understands the topics behind it. His lectures can be boring but he clearly explains the topics.
I am warning you, I been at RIT for over 3 years now, I never had worse of a professor than this guy. Professor himself is nice, but highly recommend not taking because of difficulty of exam/quiz. Grades so strict and inconsistent. Don't understand most of his lecture because the way he talks. It is enough said.
Ive had my share of tough math teachers, but Ive never experienced such a punitive grader on exams and quizzes. He expects 100% correct, full paragraphs, with absolutely nothing wrong. If you slightly mess up, instantly a 0 for that problem. I studied with him every week, he even convinced me not to withdraw. Worst advice I ever followed.
As a lecturer he is pretty decent. Most of your grade will come from exams which are super difficult. I usually do not get test anxiety but for this class I do. Everything must be laid out very specifically in order to get credit. It was difficult to get problems right because I was worried that I would lose most of the credit for minor things.
I understood an A level of the material, but because of his ridiculously anal grading, I highly doubt I'll receive one. Nice guy, alright lecturer, and very tough grader.
Lectures are boring and hard to understand. Tests are extremely difficult and you will receive little to no partial credit. Offers no practice exams and waits until the day before the test to post what sections the test will be on. You only have an hour for the tests and you will run out of time to work because of how much content he puts in.
He can switch between being caring, and inconsiderate. He gets visibly frustrated when people cannot recall earlier concepts during lectures. He has no apologies when many people in the class could not finish his exam in time. 3 people managed to, everyone else should've too right? Take his class if you want the most rigorous P&S exp. ever.
I would not describe him as caring or kind to his students. Punishes students who answer incorrectly in class by grilling them in front of the whole class until they get to the correct answer. Grades are almost entirely test-based. Very unaccommodating--was very rude to a friend of mine who is hard of hearing
I don't really understand what's up with all the bad reviews this guy gets. He makes it clear from day one that you need to be on top of the content, and he cares more about how you get to an answer than the answer itself. Tests are most of the grade but they are extremely similar to homework problems. Just show up and do the work, easy A.
Kumar is a really talented teacher but you need to show him that you're willing to work for the grade. I would recommend reading each section before class because he goes relatively fast and expects you to be able to ask questions. His office hours are really helpful but all of your grades come from tests and quizzes which are often difficult.
Youll probably only end up with him if you get a terrible appointment time like I did. Do anything you can to avoid him. Very few grades and incredibly rapid paced lectures lead to a GPA massacre.
He is tough and his lectures can go by very quickly, but he tries his best to make himself available. If you meet with him 1-1, he is extremely helpful and will guide you through problems with some tips and tricks. You will still have to work hard to pass, but he is a pretty friendly guy outside of class.
Kumar is one of the best math teachers I had at RIT. He really cares about the class and does his best to make sure everyone understands. His quizzes and tests are based on the hw questions, and most of them are 90% similar to the hw, so it is really important that you do the stuff that he says. If you are ready to work, you'll love his class.
Professor Kumar is awful, avoid this teacher. Currently taking his online Webassign class, and he has no empathy for students during quarantine. He doesn't give nearly enough time for the quizzes, making his class overly stressful, because he expects you to have perfect work. His lecturing style is confusing as he jumps from problem to problem.
Oh dear god where do I begin. I hate this man, especially with this semester being Zoom based. He takes attendance, however this doesn't count towards your grade at all. His lectures are very dry, and all of the homework is from the textbook and he steals quiz problems from the book and other schools. He never answers emails. 0/10 don't recommend.
Do yourself a favor and never take one of his classes. I don't know if its because it has been zoom based and he isn't quite sure how to teach in this format, but he is by far one of the worst professors I've had at RIT. He takes ridiculous points off for every quiz/exam, is quite rude and has an attitude towards students, and has NO empathy
By far one of the most strictest professors in terms of grading, will literally cut off points for the silliest of mistakes. Avoid at all cost.
Professor Kumar is great. He expects you to pay attention and put in the effort and if you do you'll be fine. Gives plenty of examples and will go back in lecture to answer questions. Gives good help in office hours. Tough grader but just wants you to understand what you're writing because thats how statistics is. Good quality for an online class.
I would never recommend Kumar as a prof, by far one of the worst I've had. His lectures are hard to follow and he will take off so many points for the most minor mistakes. He is available for office hours which is great, but he can be very condescending and rude when you ask for help. He simply told me to "practice more" rather than helping.
This class is much harder than expected and I did not do well so take my review with a grain of salt. I would say that you are better off learning the content on your own because I could never focus during his boring mediocre online lectures. However I will say the course has a pretty simple layout - just keep up to date on webassign.
Please listen to the other reviews and never take classes from this guy. I have never failed or dropped a course before until now. Prof. Kumar's lectures are terrible online, and his grading policy is awful. Tests are worth 85% of your grade (with no makeups or extra credit), and is a very strict grader. He doesn't believe in partial credit.
I've never written a review for a professor until now. He is an extremely tough grader and will deduct all points if the problem is solved differently than his method. If you do not use his format to perfection, even if you get the correct answer, you still get a zero. His quizzes are mostly one question, so you have no chance for partial credit.
One of the worst professors at RIT. Do yourself a favor and do not take him. His exams and quizzes press you for time and is a petty and anal grader. Do not even take him even if his section is the only one available, the better choice would be to drop it that semester. I worked really hard at this class, did lectures, still got a bad grade
He is kind and caring. Be aware of the exams and final are very heavy and difficult. Final exam costs 30% and 2 exams cost 55%. Exams and final are long and limited time. The grading is stressful. He always says don't stress out, but I do stress out when I take the quizzes, exams, and final. He requires the real understanding of the materials.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever had. Did not help me to learn this course at all. Go with someone else if you can, don't waste your time and money with this professor.
People here are rating him poorly because he grades really tough. He will knock points off for ANYTHING. 85% of this class was determined by 3 testes :( , but he really knows his stuff and his lectures are good if you can pay attention for the full hour and fifteen minutes. That said, this class was very stressful, but i learned a lot from him.
Terrible professor that doesn't give enough time for quizzes. Many people had an issue with just 10 minutes and another 10 for submitting a pdf.
The worst teacher Ive ever had in my life, lectures in hieroglyphics because his handwriting is terrible. Gives 10 minute quizzes that are impossible to complete in that time. The strictest grader I have ever seen, takes points off for even the slightest mistake. Please never take, to save you time and stress
I read the reviews for this professor. I thought to myself "I'm good at math. It won't matter that he's a tough grader, I got this." He's worse than just a tough grader. This is the worst professor I've had at RIT, and I've had some bad ones. He talks from the start of class to the end of class with no class interaction. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF!
Do not take any class with Kumar. Kumar should not be allowed to teach. I dont know how else to say he is a terrible professor, do not take him. If there were a list of worst people/profs Kumar would be too 2 and not 2. I have never seen any prof casually watch half the class get a 40 on an exam and proceed as if everything is normal.
Professor Kumar is one of the worst lecturers I have ever had at RIT, he was never clear on what topic we were talking about, or what we were doing. He just started writing and if you could easily fall behind, especially since he writes quickly and never explains afterwards and his handwriting is impossible to read. Also the grade was 90% tests.
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had at RIT. Guy has boring 1 hour 45-minute lectures that are impossible to keep up with. Grade rests almost entirely on exams. This wouldn't be the worst on its own, but the exams are almost impossible to pass. Only 1, singular, measly student got an A, with the average being 50%. How am I supposed to pass?
Professor Kumar is night and day: his lectures are very good. They are dense, but he does an amazing job of helping you understand the material. However, Professor Kumar's tests are extremely hard, arguably unfair. The material covered in lecture and homework vary drastically from what appears on the quizzes and tests. He is certainly managable
Worst professor by far that I've had here. While he's not horrible with the actual lectures, his quizzes and tests are just unfair. They are pretty unrelated to classwork, so you need to read the textbook to have a shot at doing well. Currently, class average is a 65 and he blames it on the class for not studying
It's good that Kumar doesn't teach freshman-level courses because some first years might not be 18 and his teaching could be considered child abuse. Do not take Kumar for linear algebra or any class. I like to think math came easy to me he showed me that 30/100 on exams are the only thing that comes easy to me. DO. NOT. TAKE. KUMAR.
Kumar has to be the worst professor I've ever had. His desire for you to understand the concepts on a fundamental level is admirable however he expects you to achieve that on your own. he will introduce the concept and a extremely basic example which pale in comparison to the exam and quiz questions. He also rushes through lectures.
Responds to questions with "I already explained this" Docked points from my midterm for writing "X: _" instead of "Let X be _" Only reason I got B+ is bc I'd already taken 4 stat classes and knew most of the material I had to tutor peers on his ENGLISH USAGE bc he deliberately wrote confusing questions that had no place in a stats exam DO NOT TAKE!
There is no extra credit or quiz make-ups. If you miss a class, there is no way to make it up. The final was the hardest test I've ever taken. Quizzes and tests are taken at the end of the class time, with an hour lecture first (on things that are not on the test). He occasionally made simple algebraic errors that students had to correct.
Absolutely awful. He is the worst teacher in the entire department by far. There was a situation where the class average on a test was a 40%, and he REFUSES to curve anything. Every time students as a whole do poorly on an exam, he blames the students for not studying enough rather than the fact that his grading is completely absurd. 0/10 :(
This guy was the worst professor I have had in my life. If you have the chance avoid him at ALL COSTS. Tests are extremely difficult and his grading is completely nonsesne. First and Last exams I failed due to little to NO points on questions that were in my opinion worthy of some partial credit. My GPA was 3.7 before his class and i barely passed.
AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID DO NOT TAKE KUMAR IF YOU CAN
Terrible teacher. Does not understand how to grade or give enough time for exams or quizzes. Made mistakes during lectures which someone who claims to have a PHD should not make trivial mistakes. Left the class with less brain cells than when it started.
Does not know how to assign problems that truly test student comprehension. More focused on how fast can students solve problems and write paragraphs. Did not give ANY partial credit.
The professor was a harsh grader and there was a quiz almost every week. If you miss a quiz, there was no way to make it up. Kumar blames the failing grades on under preparation. I would consider myself good at math but this class was so difficult.
Dr. Kumar is well-intentioned and a decent lecturer, but his exams are quite difficult. To succeed in this class, you must read out of the textbook. His notes are not sufficient for what he assesses you on. 90% of the grade are tests and quizzes so be prepared to study a lot.
He structures the class in a dysfunctional way. He has no graded homework, only quizzes and exams, which are insanely difficult with low averages. It feels like you are drowning when you are on average doing well on the exam. He prefers difficult theoretical problems making the course work impossible to understand.
If you're decent at math and willing to put in a few hours each week to really understand the material, you should be able to get a B+ or better. The class is very doable if you stay on top of things. But if math isn't your strength or you don't plan on putting in the time, it can be tough—you might end up with a C+ or worse. SKIP
Please listen to the reviews and do not take this professor, even if his is the only section that works for you. While the material itself is not very difficult, his expectations and range of questions on three (3) tests, which are still 85% of your grade, are impossible to satisfy. Horrible teaching style, no partial credit. Heed my warning.
