Some will not like his way of communicating. Get over it! He is an EXCELLENT teacher who is willing to do whatever is necessary to help you learn. A little eccentric (brings own chalk) but all to make sure he is as effective as possible. Wish others brought their own chalk, can't read their writing.
ugh, the first days of class he gets in your nerves with his talking. hes weird in a way. some stuff is easy, but he is a good teacher in the sence that he knows stuff.he needs to explain throughly and clear, but he hits every note with his voice.
Overall a good professor. Very clear about his explanations and makes it easier to understand the concepts. Makes sure to repeat concepts as to help you memorize them. His test reviews are almost the same as the actual test, he just changes the numbers, though you still need to study in order to get a good grade.
The worst class I have ever taken. He doesn't actually explain anything, just tells and expects you can do it. Also, he continues lecture in discussion sections and WILL NOT go over homework problem or answer any other questions one may have.
that was the worst experience i've had.i had to drop out of the class.it was just precalculus but he's only concerned about calculus.didn't make any sense.he doesn't even care if you understand or not.i had to withdraw. so basically this guy cost me 3 credits and some dough. i do not recommend taking any classes of him!!!
Excellent teacher, is a joy to be in his class. His explanations are great and he always bring some funny remarks to the class!
he's very boring, he just dictates problems and solves them. you can skip all the classes and just be there for the tests and as long as you review the book you'll be fine. one good thing is that there is barely any collected homework
Explain clearly, step by step , straight forward, fair exams.
I'm not sure why, but Prof. Boorstein was a very effective math teacher.

I highly recommend this proffessor. he is hard but after you take his class, you will have a strong foundation to go on.
Explains prblem in clear way, a few funny jokes. Tests are on blue book, pretty straight from the review. The class is boring, but when questions asked he will answer. Pretty decent prof
Went too fast and was unclear. He teaches like everyone already knows the material. No outside help offered. It took a tutor to teach me the class after he already taught it and I've already taken calculus.
Horrible professor, goes way to fast, just assumes students understand everything, not really available for help outside the class, very harsh grader, exams were very tough class was often very boring!
Great guy and great proffessor. I would recomend studying ahead for this one. He is nice but serious. Math should be taken serious. A quote from Borstien: "you'll get killed in calculus if you dont study hard in pre calc" "weather your studying to be an engineer or a doctor, I would hope you have a good grasp of this stuff before doing so"
truly a terrible prof.. he doesn't help at all. ignores your requests for outside the classroom help. i guess the exams are ok b/c i had a 90 (i still couldn't figure out how i got it) on the 1st one and the second one was 62 but i still had to drop the course cause i didn't understand anything...
let me just say that i am retaking stats next semester
He's as bored as hell!
If you want a boring class and low grades on your tests, then take him. Unclear lectures, no help outside, always rush through things. If you don't want to retake course after attending his class, then avoid avoid and avoid plz!!
A nice guy, but he sucks as a teacher, so boring!! OMG!! He talks like the "clear eye guy" from the commercials!!!
aweful teacher he does not answer questions and just writes notes on the board and never explains anything. i have to take this class over because i did not understand a thing
good enough
For all the people that are giving Prof. Boorstein a bad review I have to say this; He's not a bad professor, yeah he's boring, but college is suppose to be hard people. I'm not good at math but I got an A- just by showing up to class, taking good notes and studying for exams. If you can do that, and survive 50 min lectures, then you can get an A.
HE'S HARD...HIS FINAL IS DIFFICULT...
Avoid a class with him at all costs. He's a nice guy and all, but couldn't teach to save his life. Thanks to Boorstein I get to take Calculus over. Woohoo!
He can't teach correct...he doesnt cover what is on his test...gives questions which he never gave example of it what so ever in the class...copies everything from a piece of paper which shows he can't memorize the lecture
Stats is an awful class to take and I don't really recommend taking Boorstein. Although he is a very nice guy, and has multiple choice exams... he says on the first day of class that this is a "self learning class" and he doesnt really help you to understand the material.. he flies right through it.
I strongly do not recommend this guy unless math was never challeaging for you growing up. He moves on a decent pace however tests do not at all correspond with optional hw or the class work it just might help. Make sure you disregard his review it means nothing. Self thought even when you show up and if you dont you might as well take an F yoursel
HE SUCKED....DO NOT TAKE HIM, or you will truly regret it!! Thanks to him I will be taking Algebra again!
Awful Awful! He FLIES but worst of all he stands in front of the board so u cant copy it then erases it. Does not teach, copies from papers, does not go over homework. I wish i never took him! Ugh
this professor is extremely difficult and being a computer science major he made me doubt myself for choosing my major. i highly recommend dropping his class and instead taking it with Greene.
Contrary to what others have to say I really loved his class. He was my teacher for my second statistics class. The first teacher I had I received an F and for him I received an A-. In order to get through his class you have to attend class everyday, sit at the front of the class and really pay attention. If you do not understand something be sure
A proficient math teacher. I never had trouble learning math. Take what the teacher says at face value and apply it to problems presented to you. If you can do this, boorstein is a great teacher. He isnt "hands on" or any sort of new age teaching style. Simply explains whats going on with the numbers. Expects you to attend daily.
He is not the worst teacher but I would recommend someone else to teach because he just looks at 500 pages of notes and writes everything from notes on board in slowest speed possible, making it extremely difficult to stay awake and learn the topic !!! If possible, don't take him....
DONT EVR TAKE HIS CLASS!! It is boring and really unlcear. He prewrites his notes so when he is working on the board u never knw whr he is getting numbers from. He keeps his back to the class a majority of the time so its hard to ask him questions. His tests are hard and look nothing like what you do in class.
Lectures are boring but he is a nice professor. If you have any problem (conflict hour between work and school), he's very understandable. He loves one who participated in class an see him in his office. Tests were not hard. All the material were taught in class. Overall, he is not bad besides his lestures are.
Brilliant man, although you really have to appreciate the subject to truly appreciate the extent of his intellect. It's not an easy grade, but if you do the hw+read the book it's not impossible. He's very straightforward with tests, no surprises. Very helpful and will discuss topics at great lengths if he sees student is genuinely interested.
Very organized so the lectures are easy to follow. He can get a little monotone, but he'll try to throw in jokes here and there. A lot of people fuss over small details that don't do this teacher justice. Overall, he's very knowledgeable, very helpful, and very easy in that you know what to expect. He really wants students to understand the math.
He doesn't Know how to teach. and sometimes out of nowhere he tell stupid jokes which he was only one who can understand.
Awful. Awful. The failure for the course came as a surprise, as he did not return last two exams. When confronted, he chose to make up numbers for the exams and told to come back at the end of next semester to pick them up.
Avoid taking his class. I am decent at math and passed Precal in high school with ease, yet I had trouble in his lectures. Didn't really have any communication with the class and had his back turned to the board the majority of the time. Followed his notes and didn't explain much further into the subject at hand. I recommend avoiding his class
Let's face it he's not very good and doesn't inspire much interest in math. If you like math avoid this guy because he makes it as dry as possible if you don't like math you will really hate him as he doesn't add anything interesting to the course.
Very experienced. If you attend class and do your homework, you'll be well prepared for the final. Fair on grading.
He's a math show off, not a teacher.
He is a brilliant man and knows for sure what he's talking about but does not know how to teach it to others, and his corny jokes don't help either LOL. DO NOT RELY ON CLASS NOTES! Use the text and go to tutoring and do this from the first day of class!
He is an absoulutely horrible teacher.Doesnt know how to and doesnt like to explain.Does not appreciate progress and effort you put if from the very beggining you did not do well.Cant memorise the lecture-reading of the paper and would avoid answering any questions.Half of the people dropped the class other half took pass/fail and he didnt care.
He is the best, he prepared me for Calculus and other external exams. He's very smart and knows his subject very well.
This guy is a genius at math, and it's pretty obvious, but he is absolutely terrible at teaching it. He gives two pages of notes (front and back) a day but you don't actually learn anything because he only faces the board and doesn't ask if people understand. The book didn't help at all, either.
Excellent Professor. I leave the class feeling like I have learned so much...but you have to go to the class unless your good at teaching yourself. Not easy but very good teacher!
He is a very smart man who knows his stuff, and he explains it clearly, but he tends to go way too fast and doesn't bother to see if anybody has questions. He acts like everyoe in the class already knows how to do the work and just basically reviews. Half our class is failing and his intentions are just to teach the material and go home.
He is great, interesting sense of humor but you really have to apply yourself ---- but that's why you are in college anyway, so shouldn't be a problem
Horrible, horrible professor!! He's boring, he's avoidant of students, and he's ruthless when it comes to exams. But he does put a lot of work into his notes, but I think he just loves math so much, that he gets pleasure from it. Trust me, avoid him at all costs!
This professor moves far too fast to keep up with. A good portion of my class failed, and most of the rest had taken this class before. His lectures were useless and to pass the class, students only needed to pay attention to the book - what was the point of showing up to class other than to turn in homework?
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. This guy brushed off any and all student questions. Avoid at all costs.
Im telling the truth. AVOID at all costs, horrible teacher! He goes way to fast, blocks the board then erases what he had blocked. Tests are extremely HARD. Fails to answer questions, and makes corny jokes. He puts you to sleep, and is no help at all. AVOID!!!!!
this professor is not that bad, i mean he goes over concepts and makes sure students understand it but he doesn't explain and expects everyone gets it( some people are slow) but he expects u to read the book and make use of the book..
He goes quickly through things and expects you to get them, he makes you memorize all the equations. His tests are extremely hard, he should probably retire soon. I wouldn't take another class with him...
He does not talk directly to students but gives example after example on the blackboard. I think because the class is so difficult for most students, some people might end up disliking him. If math is not your strong suit (or you are an adult student) I recommend taking a prep class and seeing tutors. Boorstein did allow students to take retests.
Very boring, Very difficult. He moves way too fast without really teaching the material, just basically going over it, and acts like the class already knows it. Makes very unfunny jokes as well.
Awful teacher. He flies through the material thinking that everyone already knows math. His tests are very very hard. He is not helpful and overall just a bad teacher.
STAY CLEAR OF THIS PROF IF MATH IS NOT YOUR SUBJECT! Examples after examples, flies through material like the speed of light, tests are hard(NO RETESTS),HW avg. SEEK OTHER PROF-and get tutor help too, tough subject for anybody who hates math!
He sucks, cant teach, goes way to fast, tests are really hard, doesn't let you use notes, tries to be funny when hes not, bad at teaching, don't take him.
This was the worst decision in my life.A complete waist of time. This guy was HIRED TO FAIL STUDENTS! STAY AWAY from him!!!Hard test and quizes, he does not help,......instead of helping he encourages you to get TUDORS LOLLL,,,,i couldnt believe it! and the worst part is that you CANNOT MKAE UP TEST OR QUIZES!
worst teacher in the entire world. had 0 interest in answering students question. can not teach at all. moved way too fast through ectures and course material and would not give reasoning for math problems. very easy to get confused. Taking this class is equivalent to committing suicide.
Not a nice teacher at all. His goal is to fail all of his students. You can already tell this teachers terrible just from looking at his syllabus. He uses two chalkboards and the organization of his work on the board is the equivalent of a person from hoarders. His tests are impossible to complete. The way he words questions is way confusing.
Had him my freshman year, and was worried that all the professors would be like him. He's the worst professor I had though. He doesn't really teach, he just entertains himself with math, while you watch. Then on the tests, instead of giving straightforward questions, he gives ones with tricks or that take so much time to do. Avoid this guy!
One of the best professor in the UMass. He teaches very good and explains it very well. Always helpful if you have question. If you attend the class every time and do the homework then you will be fine. The exams are similar to the problems which he does in the class.
He is an excellent professor if you listen to him,you will understand not just Math but it's application and use as well:)))My country needs a professor like him.
Would not recommend Boorstein to anyone. Besides the fact that he's boring, he doesn't even really teach! He only solves problems and examples over and over until the entire class is up. There is no explaining. The tests consist of equations relative to the class, but also problems that weren't even mentioned or gone over.
Awful. I love math but had a hard time actually LEARNING anything from him. He'll solve problems and explain what he's doing but not why and it made it difficult to understand and do the problems on your own.
Horrible teacher. All he does is go over examples until the class period is over. His class is sleep inducing, and he is little to no help when it comes to learning. The course essentially boils down to whether you can learn calculus at home by yourself from the textbook, which I am sure is nearly impossible for most (like myself).
This professor carelessly grades exams/quizzes as well as offers little to no help to students. in addition to this, he will make mistakes in study guides that you will be tested on and assumes all his work is correct when a question is asked. He does math, you watch. Unless you read the book alone, get a younger, happier teacher. hes a prick.
a good person but not a good teacher
Not an easy professor at all, and he does do examples all of class and he goes through everything really fast. Also he doesn't use the textbook. But if you take good notes and do the examples out of the book it's possible to pass. It's is possible to pass if you give yourself enough study time outside of class.
if you don't show up to class you will not get the hw for the day. exams are hard, you will have to explain (in words) how you got the answer to some problems.
DO NOT TAKE!!! He stands in front of the board writing from notes with his back turned the whole class, little interaction with students, no help(or time) with questions, tests are very difficult, questions are always harder than ones from his notes or the book, at least half the class dropped. Again, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
You NEED your textbook! It was the difference of passing or failing for me. If you are not proficient in radical notation, quadratic equations/functions, graphing, polynomials. etc.. please be ready for an advanced introduction. Come ready and be prepared to LEARN! You will get your money's worth. Attendance makes a difference. Trust me!
Although it is not required, do the syllabus homework. If you can do the problems in the book, you will be fine for the exams. Handout homework is easy, as are quizzes (they are similar). Exams are difficult, but he drops and exam and a quiz. The final is easy for those to take Boorstein because he doesn't make it. If you want to learn, take him.
Professor Boorstein is a math genius and he expects you to be too. His class is very fast-paced, because there is a lot of material to cover. I am usually great with math, but Calculus was difficult for me. If you do all the problems he "suggests" you do AND you take advantage of the tutors, you'll do fine. If you are having trouble, just tell him!
He is a nice person, helpful. Goes too fast though, I had to teach myself a lot, but it happens with all difficult classes. A good professor in general.
He is the kind of Professor that can make or break your college career. He is insanely difficult. If you are not a math genius, do not take this class. He grades homework similar to tests. In order to even have a chance at passing I had to look up how to do the problems online and learn from there.
Thank goodness I had already taken calc in high school and pre-clac a few times in preparation. I am no math wiz, but good luck getting anything out of lecture except frustration and confusion. His style is to just write out examples on the board, with very little set-up or explanation. Only took it because of my schedule, but it was a struggle.
You have to listen to him to him at all times. Always taking notes throughout the whole lecture and he expects you to know materials from previous course. I am a freshman so if you are a freshman do not take this course. CAUTION!!!!!!!
Please stay away from him or his wife if you can . I took him last semester and i had to withdraw the damn class. The tests are almost never about what you studied for . It goes so fast that if you are a slow learner, you will be left behind real quick. worst professor I ever had.
Doesn't explain ANYTHING. In class he literally said "I'm not responsible for your education, I am only here to answer questions" Comes to class with a piece of paper with things written in it and for the entire class he will copy on the board what is on his paper, without any explanation, while his back is turned to you. I STRUGGLED to get a B-
By far the hardest professor I have ever had. Take this class with Catherine Roche if you can. She is not too much better but definitely better than either Boorstein. He does not explain any material, he just does problems on the board and doesnt stop for questions or explanations. If you have strong math skills you wont have too much problem
Although Calc is a tough class Professor Boorstein is a very good lecture, I went to tutoring and his office hours and was able to get a B+
Dr. Boorstein is a decent lecturer who clearly is better than a lot of his students at UMB deserve. He teaches things and will go back over problems if people don't get it (usually from those that skip lecture). Protip: Don't show up halfway through lectures and hope to pass. He if funny if you have any broad knowledge. Seems fair also.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER! You can drop 1 of 3 exam grade, two of them were take-home exams. He always gives the grade much higher than you think. I could not believe I got an A- in a math class!!! I had failed the course with other Professor before
Horrible horrible horrible. I do not recommend this class please
AWFUL!!! doesnt care if you pass, doesnt even care if you understand.. goes along wth the course as if hes alone. expects you to already know the material. tests EVERY week!! his motto "its not my job to teach you the material, thats what the book is for" and he owns up to this.. hes pretty nice but will make you feel like a fool if you dont kno
MA 134 is not an easy class no matter who you take it with, and he gives you everything you need. It took me countless hours in the library studying, but because this material is hard and absolutely not because he is a bad teacher. He's a great teacher and absolutely brilliant. You have to take the time and study, and you will pass, guaranteed.
I am currently in his class WARNING take at your own risk If you had help taking the placement test DO NOT TAKE HIM do yourself a favor and take pre-calc first!
Currently taking him during summer. Professor Boorstein is very knowledgeable. He is very old fashion in the way he teaches but very good. He goes a little fast at times, but that's not his fault, people dont ask questions, so he keeps going. we have exams every week but he drops the lowest one. Hw is key to prepare you for the exams. summer!!!
Don't do it to yourself
Take this class at your own risk! Even tho attendance is not mandatory but if you missed one class, you will be screwed for the test. Not a hard grader but the tests are much harder than the material we actually learned in class. Be prepared to drop this class or dedicate yourself entirely to this class.
AWESOME. SIMPLY THE BEST! BETTER THAN ALL THE REST!! His exams are FUN FUN FUN!! So put on a HAPPY FACE every time you are in the class! STUDY STUDY STUDY A's!!!!!!
Prof Seth is a good teacher, but he expects you to remember everything from all the previous math classes. Homework and tests like every 2 weeks, some of the tests could be take home. Always available to help during office hours. If you don't know math already, you have to either study really hard or fail.
He is a very kind professor, sometimes very cute. Never feels any pressure in this class. If you don't miss the class and take notes, it would be easier than you just reading the textbook yourself. Also, he sent out practice questions before test, if you can do them then a B is not a problem
He is a smart Professor who knows math. Aristocratic, using high knowledge to teach low level class. He does not adjust his understanding of math for student. He appears to be an instrument to fail students. Bad professor, majority students fail his class. Below average will pass, if they stay for final. 1/3 students remain until the end of the sem
Professor boorstein is a character straight out of a Disney movie in a good way. All you have to do in his class is pay attention.
Great, You have to just listen to him with passion and attend all classes unless you have a licit excuse.
Hardest Professor I've ever had for math. Do yourself a favor and drop this class as soon as you can. Even my advisor told me I should have dropped. He doesn't let you use calculators or cheat sheets. He use to teach upperclassmen which explains why he lectures like were supposed to know what he's talking about.
Oh Seth, I have been in your class for only 4 weeks and i am already failing. This teacher teaches students just like if the student already knew the content. He seem to not care about how well his or her students are doing. If you have him please drop him. Not worth loosing your money on someone that is not good at teaching.
Bro if you want to dedicate all your time to calculus then take this class. You literally will need to spend most of your time on this class and totally forget about your other important classes. HES SO BORING. anddddd he is too quick during his lecture and you will get lost.
If you want to pass this class, I have three words for you: TAKE, SOMEBODY, ELSE
Worst teacher ever. He does not explain the materials, all we do is take notes.
if you study you will def. pass his class. Great prof. would take him again!
Seth is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I did not have to show up to lectures and was still able to get an A. His lectures are entertaining and fun. Sometimes he makes jokes which are extremely hilarious. You won't regret taking this class, you will learn a lot and it is an easy A!!
Seth was absolutely one of the best professors I have taken for mathematics. He is very clear in his lectures, and his notes and homework outline exactly what is on the test. He was always willing to answer questions, even if they were off topic, in order to help me understand the content. If you try, you will succeed in his class.
Professor Boorstein is not a bad Professor. The only thing makes sure you keep practicing the math exercises that he assigned on his syllabus after each class you attend. If you follow this rule I think you will be fine. When you do not understand something goes to his office or send him emails about the question you did not understand.
I never want to take him again. He's not helpful, grades hard, the review is nothing like the tests. Tutoring taught me more than he did. Just don't take it. I have to take this course again cause its a requirement, but I'm making sure it's not with him,
Its been a few weeks and the room looks like they all wanna dop out including me. If u have a hard time sleeping take this class and he will put you to sleep
Don't. Just don't. Unless you want too teach yourself the entirety of a course. He doesn't teach he just reviews problems with himself. Please. Don't.
Awful
Absolutely worse teacher Ive ever had in my life. Very non approachable, does a great job at making you feel stupid, and you have to teach yourself! I spend hours and hours outside of the classroom trying to teach myself calculus from YouTube videos, using the book, and seeking help from others. My entire class is failing except 2 kids.
worst professor Ive ever had. doesnt teach properly at all. its hard to understand his teachings and he gives the worst tests. 100% do not recommend and definitely would not take his class again. his comments on homeworks and tests are very harsh and he makes students feel stupid with the comments.
This guy gets too much negative flack. Go to class, pay active attention to the processes he illustrates on the board. DON'T DO EVERY PROBLEM ON THE HW!!! Do one of two of the different problems EVERY night, this leaves you with problems to do when studying for exams!!! (He even says this). Repetition is key in math, do problems EVERY NIGHT!!!
His lectures are mostly unclear and you need to do most of the work yourself. However, his tests are quite lenient as there are no trick questions and he gives extra credit Qs and marks for working. The course grading consists of 5 tests, 5 homework, midterm and finals.
He is a fair grader with useful comments, but his lectures are absolutely atrocious. He stands in front of the board and drones on for an hour without pause, constantly writing and solving his own problems based on his notes like a math solving machine, standing directly in front of what he is writing so you cannot see it. Avoid if you need help.
I never understood calculus until now. I tried with a different instructor before and it was a disaster. Prof. Boorstein actually has patience for his students, explains things well, and it's refreshing to be taught by someone who so clearly loves the subject matter. I really appreciate how much effort he puts into his lectures. I've learned a lot
He doesn't deserve his bad rap. He's actually a great professor, but he's just not giving away easy A's. If that's your expectation, safe to say you should avoid his class
Ill be honest... the worst professor Ive ever had. Stands in front of what hes writing in the board and erases it minutes after writing. Hes very arrogant and makes unrelated obscure and often condescending jokes. It is almost impossible to keep up and Takes notes. I have not learned a thing about managerial calculus, only his corny jokes
I only placed into this class because I had help on the placement test, so I really shouldn't have placed into calculus. That being said, Dr. Boorstein taught in such a clear and simple way that everything seemed to click. I had to study A LOT, but I kept having "aha!" moments in his lecture that would have been impossible with any other professor
On the first day of class, he proceeds to walk in and immediately says, "The fail rate for my class is 40%." Save yourself the hassle and DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Very arrogant unapproachable guy.
I dropped after the first class because the first thing he said was "the fail rate in my class is 41%".
Sooooooo, Professor Boorstein doesn't even try to get to know you or your name. When he starts class he gets to the point and doesnt even stop to ask if people have questions. He stands in front of the board so you cant copy or see. He never fully erases the board so sometimes youre guessing what he wrote. Overall I never understood this class.
highly recommend you to not take this class
Just don't take his class he just flies through the information awful professor
If I could recommend to stir away from any Math class ... its this one. Professor Boorstein does not care if his students learn the material or not and in this class, you wont learn anything. He stands in front of the whiteboard and you can't see. Almost half of my class withdrew on day one and sadly, hes one of the only math teachers.
Do NOT take this class unless you want to fail and have your GPA go down.
Professor Boorstein is hands down one of the coolest professors. He purposely makes the course "scary" in the first week simply because he wants to know who the real student is. Though there is some unit that was confusing on my end, I managed to go to his office hours to understand the concept more. Don't listen to naysayer and you will love it.
This guy still teaches? Lol. Terrible. Stay away.
