Challenging but good teacher, actually teaches concepts instead of memorization. If more math teachers were like this I don´t think so many people would have trouble with math. Blame your previous math teachers not him.
He was great! This guy knows his stuff, and his passion for the subject really makes his classes enjoyable. The best teacher I've had at SPSCC in my two years there. Highly recommend him! :)
This class stressed me beyond belief. The fact that he didn't grade homework and your final grade relied solely on your tests intimidated me beyond belief. But in the end, I felt more accomplished and took more skills away from the class than just a pre-req.But braver is very articulate and helpful and i never left the class confused :)
Mr. Braver is not a good teacher... He talks very fast and very quiet, I couldn't hear him even though i sat in the front. He doesn't spend much time explaining the material, he just expected us to get it on our own. He was visibly reluctant to offer help to students (including me) after class. He just doesn't care. Thats the message i got from him
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER UNLESS YOU ARE A MATH GENIUS! I left the classroom five times more confused than when i came in, every single day.
WORST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. He does not teach the class nor explain the material. Everyday you will come into class and he will give you assignment with no explanation, and then take questions the next day. But if you do not ask the right questions you will fail the class. I worked the hardest I have ever worked for a class and got a C.BAD
This teacher is not personable. Very 'detached' and distant. Will not help you pass the class. Actually, he will help you FAIL the class by being so detached and distant and confusing. He should work for Microsoft, or NASA, but NOT with students who struggle. Very, very disappointed.
He's a very good teacher. The best math teacher that I have had at spscc. He has a kind of weird way of talking that can sometimes leave you scratching your head, but really he goes over material at a glacial pace and explains concepts several times in lecture. He's not super nice but not mean or intimidating at all.
the worst teacher i've had in my life. will NOT go out of his way to assist struggling students, lightly brushes over the material, then expects people to somehow pass his tests. avoid him at all costs, or you will regret it later.
He's kind of strange, but his level of strangeness is quite funny if you listen to him. I didn't do any homework for the entire quarter, just recorded pristine notes in class. If you write down 90% of what he writes in class, and do the homework for what you don't understand you'll be fine. Explained Stats and probability perfectly.
I thought that Seth was a very easy teacher who cared about what the students learn and wants them all to suceed
Braver is obviously very passionate about math but he tends to jump around a lot when explaining concepts. Also, the textbook he uses is an online resource from the UW which sucks. The questions for each section are sometimes not worded well, and unless you're already in the habit of thinking outside the box, you may have a really hard time.
Very good teacher, nice, helpful. Goes on tangents all the time, and over explains things but he really wants his students to learn. he believes that learning is more important than getting a good grade.
After finishing the lessons for a test he'd only spend one day reviewing for the test and spend any extra days rambling on about something completely unrelated from the class. I love math, so I thought it was always interesting, but if you struggle with math I'm not sure he's the best teacher for you. I generally like him though! He's a funny guy!
Braver rocks. His lectures are interesting, and worthy of attending. His exams are challenging, but he tells you what will be on them beforehand, so you can prepare appropriately. You will leave his class with a deep understanding of the material, and an appreciation of the beauty present within mathematics.
I've had Professor Braver four quarters now, and at first I didn't like him, but now he's my absolute favorite instructor. The classes are hard, but he makes them understandable. I failed my first test in his trig class last year, so my advice would be pay attention, even durring the first few weeks because you start to learn from the beginning.
He is an amazing teacher! Actually gets you to THINK about what you are learning and why it's that way instead of just memorizing facts. LOVED his class. He's not going to coddle folks who are used to getting an easy grade, but if you put in the effort, he is one of the best teachers at the school.
I had little interest in the subject matter and hadn't taken math for a long time, so I found it difficult, but got an A with much effort. Do the homework, and REALLY think about his test questions and don't rush. I took my time on the tests and did well. The book was free, but not very good.
Seth is one of the best Math teachers I've ever had. He focuses on concept building & understanding, rather than memorization of procedures. Textbook is FREE ONLINE which saved me over $100. Also NO HOMEWORK was collected, as grade was based on 4 tests + final. Lowest test score dropped and lots of freebies on tests. Really cool guy and great prof.
I have NEVER understood math until this class. Seth offers a perspective in the textbook and in class that takes away the scary and ambiguous monster stigma I've always had about math, reducing everything to a few simple rules that we prove in class frequently. I'd recommend him to anyone interested in actually understanding math.
Mr. Braver's math courses were challenging. However, it made qualitative aspects of math interesting. It was interesting to see all the proofs of things we were learning. The textbooks were free and very precise, as in the book only covered topics we'd learn in class. I have a better understanding of math that is more detailed than just numbers.
He was a very smart professor, no doubt about that. He could whip up an equation and solve it no problem. Also an extremely nice and patient person. That is the good. The cons: I believed he should teach at university level, or calc and above. He had a hard time giving easy type problems, in which I mean to build understanding then give hard probs.
Seth Braver is essentially a terrible teacher. Though, he has a PHD in mathematics this does not mean he excels at teaching in any way. In fact, the student is Seth Braver’s last concern. He uses his own “book”, which is more like a pamphlet, that contains MANY ERRORS and these errors are corrected the student. He is continually condescending.
Do NOT take his class. I took him during Spring quarter of last year and he was the hardest teacher I have ever taken. He doesn't teach. He expects you to know everything as you come into the class. The tests are hard and I barely passed because I had to sit down and study for 5 hours every night to get the material.
No Calculator or notes allowed on Test. Unless you have strong memorization skills and understand the foundations of math don't take the class. Has his own textbook but it is not useful, his lectures basically comes from the examples from the textbook. You would have to find the rest of the materials by yourself, He grades his test very hard.
Very very confuse instructor, there is minimal to non lecture but he expected you to read and learn straight from his textbook. NO note, or calculator allow. All grade is base on the 4 tests. So pass or fail is depend on the test. Highly would not recommend this instructor.
I hate math and this class was super hard. You have to know your stuff. No easy points. He was okay personally, but not very outgoing and seemed uncomfortable.
STAY AWAY! The worst teacher I have ever had, he is a nice and very smart guy, but not fit to teach at all. It seems like you either excelled or failed this class.
He gets a bad wrap online. He makes class funny and interesting. Sometimes unclear, but if you tell him he will clear things up for you. I hated math but he made me really enjoy it. Laid back dude, your grade will reflect how well you work - simple as that.
Funny, helpful, knowledgeable, all around a great teacher. Homework was fairly simple and gone over the next day, but make sure you do it, tests have problems similar to what you see in the book and in lectures. Textbook is free online. If you're considering statistics, this is the teacher you want.
I really like him, his class was my first class in America. It is a good beginning and an excellent experience for me to know something about American teaching style.
I really like him. His class is my first class in America. It is a good beginning and an excellent experience for me. I have learned a lot through his brilliant teaching style.
Fantastic professor. He is great at explaining how to do a problem or set of problems and chooses the easiest examples for the exams. When he isn't lecturing on material, he's lecturing on different aspects of Mathematics like Euclidean geometry or Binomial Theorem. He offered 5-10 extra credit points on the exams for those who paid attention.
He expects you to know your pre-calculus Mooculus textbook is completely useless if your stuck on a problem. He doesn't utilize canvas for discussion boards or sources for online help. When our class failed on of his tests he emailed us saying how terrible we did. He's unprofessional & arrogant. homework is easy compared to his ridiculous tests.
He offered a whole different type of learning experience for this course that I had previously taken at a high school level. His tests do stick with what he teaches and the lectures are both entertaining and academic. Good luck on some of the extra credit if you haven't taken Calculus though!
If math is not your strong point, DO NOT TAKE Braver. He assigns hw that often looks nothing like your tests. There is no study guide for tests, which can be ridiculous as he assigns problems he wont even work out in class. When our class failed a test he blamed all of us and emailed us all telling us basically we were all failures at math.
I have always hated math but taking Seth's class made me appreciate math in the world. I really enjoyed what he was teaching and i recommend it to anyone!
The class was fairly easy and entertaining. I actually enjoyed learning about math.. He is tough on participation grades though online. I'm not really sure what he wanted from me, I tried several different approaches to communicating on the forum with the rest of the class and him and still never got over 75% participation for the week.
He is an extremely unfair grader, and isn't clear on what exactly his grading criteria is. He offers one chance for extra credit, which is actually a class lottery so your chances of getting the extra credit are 1 in 28 assuming everyone buys one ticket. I wouldn't recommend taking the class with him especially if you need a certain GPA.
Seth Braver is incredibly smart. He's a gifted mathematician. However, he is the worst professor I have ever had. He was constantly condescending and stuck-up. He does not seem to care about the students whatsoever, he only cares about math and being smarter than everyone else. Smart? Yes. Good teacher? No.
Good teacher, is very willing to help so ask questions. Homework is optional but doing it helps you understand the material better. He goes over the homework the next day in class in detail. Tests are tough, but if you take notes, understand the material, & study for a couple hours you will do fine. Reviewing your past tests for the final helps.
Dr. Braver is an excellent teacher. I took him for Calc I & II. His class is very tough. The only graded assignments are the tests. Homework is beneficial for practice sake. Easy to talk to in office hours. He teaches from a textbook the he wrote. Therefore you don't have to buy or rent one. Don't skip class if you want to pass.
His way of teaching was hard to get use to but I was able to catch on. I started off struggling in this class but I studied a lot and did a bunch of learning on my own to help myself. His tests correlate to his textbook/homework. Started off with an F on my first exam and ended with a 95 on the final. Get ready to dedicate lots of your time.
If you are passionate about math and willing to devote a lot of time outside of the classroom to it, you'll do fine. The reason for my poor rating is because 1) he only grades your exams and final (no homework, quizzes, etc.) and 2) he tests you on material learned in previous classes (If you're in Calc 3, he'll test you on Calc 3 plus Calc 2&1).
People have said Professor Braver's class is "hard" and "impossible" to pass . Let me tell you, as someone who has struggled with math all my life, that is nonsense. This is a Calc 3 class, meaning that prereq knowledge is a big deal, something the previous reviewer does not seem to understand. Braver is an excellent lecturer and a solid choice.
Entire class consists of lectures, 3 tests, and final. Lectures are amazing as he'll often start on a topic covered in middle/high school and build up from there, writes everything he wants u to know on the board, and writes everything like a mathematical proof even writing down why he did each step. Harsh but fair grader and every test has EC
Grades only discussions, quizzes, and finals. For discussions he grades you on quality of discussion posts as well as participation but regardless of how much you participate, he'll grade it based on his own thought of whether you "participated" or not. Don't suggest taking him unless you have to.
Ok, so he is absolutely, no doubt, by far, the best math instructor I have had in my life. The one caveat is he is also the most difficult. I received my first B... ever.... in that class. Im not too sour though because I feel that Im leaving the class with an excellent education. I would take him if you love math and you love a challenge:)
There are a lot of discussions due every week. Syllabus was unclear about another discussion that was worded to sound like it was optional but it was required. He makes up his own participation score but as long as you do all the discussions and the quiz you'll pass. This class is focused on the philosophy of math. You will do very little math.
Professor Braver is absolutely phenomenal. The assigned readings and videos were extremely interesting even for someone, like myself, who has always viewed math as a subject that I need to "get through". If you enjoy participating in online discussions and forums, you will definitely find this class engaging. Awesome experience in Math 107!
He's definitely the best Math teacher I have had, it's not that hard to get an good grade in his class as you do his homework and fully understand his lecture, you will be alright in his class
Seth is easily one of the top three math professors I have ever had. With his deep knowledge and passion for the subject, it is hard not to become extremely interested yourself. Show up to class, put in the hard work, and you will have a better understanding in this subject than most, with Seth's guidance.
Bad teaching style, hard to understand, little patience
By far the best professor I've had at this college
Professor Braver is by far, the BEST math teacher I've ever had. His passion for the subject just drew my attention to the subject and made me appreciate calculus even more. He is a tough grader and your grade is only on exams, but it can be really helpful if you have a tight schedule and can't afford to have "busy work" to do each night.
Stay away!! I have never had such a condescending teacher. In his syllabus he even tells you if you are an A student you can forget about that A because he believes only true geniuses probably deserve it but not us general students. I love math and Im relatively good but I could not do anything right for this teacher.
Got over 100% so far. His lessons are easy to understand and easy to figure out why you have that formula. The guys who said he is a bad teacher may not have a good base of math.
I loved this class the material was great, but it always seemed like he tried to stick it to the students on the quizzes. They are only about 5 or 6 questions and he gives you time limit of 30 minutes. Not easy questions! Discussions were also very poorly graded, as well. I'm not trying to bash the guy, but this isn't an easy class.
Although I didn't like Seth at first, the class got better, as the quarter went further. His lectures can be hit or miss, and his teaching style is a little stale, however, he is awesome at math, and attending the lectures are worth it, and the textbook is free to download online, and the hardcover copy is cheap. Would take again.
I do not recommend this instructor. He is lecture heavy and tests are hard. Tests are every other week and 20-25 hard questions. The questions are set up like he wants you to fail. During this course, half the class was in Math Lab for tutoring because his instruction is awful. His lectures are all over the place and his humor is dry.
He did not follow his syllabus and I had to take his lack of teaching to his bosses. I was unable to learn anything from his class.
His assignments are straight forward but his grading criteria is confusing and very harsh.
Seth is one of the best professors I've ever had. I took his statistics class in the fall and I've never enjoyed math like that. It may seem rigorous at times, but stay with him. Do not be afraid to communicate with him, he has a moment to explain things. Be ready for fast-paced lectures and a man who dearly loves math.
He is an amazing professor so far and understands so much about mathematics. Generally, he explains things from a very basic standpoint and builds up so we understand why and how the math works. This gives his students a more firm understanding of the subject. He also does give us room to ask questions but he is harsh and confusing in grading.
This was one of the hardest math classes I have ever taken. If you expect an easy grade out of this class please take someone else. With minimal effort I passed with a C+ (I still dont understand) but, if you dont turn things in or try in discussions then expect to fail. He teaches like a 200 class
He's the first teacher that made me work for my grade, and I'm thankful for that. He's got amazing lectures and he's great at breaking down concepts. It was a good challenge for me and I've never gotten more out of a math class ever before.
Attending this mans class is pointless. His "lectures" are taken almost word for word from the textbook he wrote, he demands paragraph long explanations on tests to show him how you solved the problem, he grades your GRAMMER on a MATH test. The only way I passed this class was through teaching myself everything he "taught" in his lectures and book.
Seth isn't the best math teacher I've ever had, but the difference between him and the best is, perhaps appropriately, infinitesimal. He stands in a league above other instructors. He genuinely cares. He made calculus simple and entertaining to learn. If you do the work, interact actively in class, and listen to feedback, you will pass.
Personally, math is a strong-suit in which I have never really had trouble understanding no matter the context. However, this self-righteous professor likes to hang the fact that "majority of students will not pass his class" over everyone's heads, and more so, lacks patience to give students proper teaching of the content. Worst professor ever.
Never gives you the full credit for discussion posts. Tests are weirdly worded and makes it sound confusing.
There is a reason why he's rated the way he is. I don't recommend taking his class, I just don't. Especially if it's online. Questions on tests will be irrelevant to the topics but yet he made tests 30% of our grade.. ridiculous. There are MANY issues with this class that I could explain but just take it from me and PICK ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
Im still in his class and I wish I would have read what everyone said about his class.
Braver is a rarity at SPSCC. He knows his subject deeply and doesn't treat college students like 5th graders. He's a great lecturer and always responds to questions. If you're here to study and learn, he's the one you want, no question. If you're not here to study and learn... maybe you should rethink whether this whole college thing is for you.
I enjoy his lecture a lot. He knows what he teaching and will add some interesting story about Math. He always happy to answer questions after class or in office hour. I took Math 151&152 with him I didn't get A in his class, but i really enjoy study with him. As long as you study for it and do the homework. It won't be problem to pass the class.
I found this class to be pretty simple and clear. You just have to watch one video each week in terms of actual 'lectures' and the forums are used heavily so you can usually find help for homework problems quickly.
The class is mainly lectures with ungraded homework. Your grade is based on 3-4 tests. I really loved his teaching style. It was engaging and made it easy to learn the material, compared to other calc teachers I've had. For Calc 1-3, he wrote his own condensed textbook that was straightforward and easy to read (only 200 pg in total)!
I had Professor Braver for another math class as well and he is an excellent teacher. His lectures are clear and what is taught in his lectures is what is on the test. No homework is turned in so nearly all of your grade is based on 3 exams and a final. I have friends at Ivy League schools asking for help from me because of Braver's clear teaching.
I took Professor Braver for Intro to Stats. All I have to say is that you won't see me in one of his classes ever again. We are given weekly lectures to watch, one quiz, one test and a forum page. Now the tests and quiz I do amazing! The forum on the other hand is very hard. It's first come first serve for who posts. The grading is not fair.
Took Mr Braver for intro to statistics and it has been a great class! Has a clear grading rubric and follows it to a T. As long as you put in the effort, you will pass with flying colors. Not homework or lecture heavy. Weekly lecture is about 20 min give or take. Highly recommend
Theres not much work to do. Test questions you dont even learn and it really sucks there isnt a book so I could learn somehow. Good luck getting over 90 on forums and he doesnt give feedback at all.
Great professor. I've never had another who was so involved in online discussions. Great video lectures too - clear explanations and with some dry humor too. He really wants and expects you to understand what you're doing, not just stick numbers in formulas. You'll have to work for a good grade, but you'll learn a lot. Changed how I think of math.
I took Seth for intro to Statistics and he is By far the worse professor I had so far and we arent even done with the quarter. He is not helpful with anything and very passive aggressive in any feedback he does give you, the discussion forums are outrageous for a lot of points where he barley give you any credit for doing it
I wish I had my earlier math classes from him. He is really, really good at showing WHY everything works the way it does. It's like I'm seeing math in 3-D for the first time.
Forum gives extra credit (up to +5% of overall grade). HW is not required- but you will probably fail if you don't do it. Quizes/Tests are not just pure number/word problems, they are also word questions about Statistical Theory you learn. Amazing class online and in person. He will roast you a little but is super supportive and helpful.
He'll be pretty picky with your work on tests, but they're justified by his clear feedback. Homework is worth nothing, but you should do it to pass. He writes his own textbooks, but the format is like a word document. He's a chill and funny dude. He pushes his students to understand math CONCEPTUALLY (not just solving). 10/10 would take again.
My grade is a reflection of me, not him. He is brilliant. Funny & quirky YouTube lessons, explains stuff in a fun way that helps to understand. The math was hard but it IS Statistics. Participate in discussions & it will pay off. HW not required, but do it! Trust him with questions, he is helpful and answers promptly.
There were lots of tests and quizzes, there was homework that was not required however if you don't do it, the concepts won't make sense. You have to participate in discussions, or you'll fail. The videos he used were great and helped with the work.
This class was graded ONLY by quizzes and exams. He doesn't teach at all and makes you learn the material through a textbook that he wrote. No videos were provided. It's only one week in and I already want to drop out.
This class is basically just you teaching yourself. He expects you to learn and figure everything out just from reading the textbook that he wrote. Class time is just spent with him going over any questions on the hw or quiz.
This professor doesn't really teach, the only time he explains concepts is if a question is asked. He expects you to fully understand his class conceptually based off of reading his textbook. No calculators are allowed on the tests. The exercises are really difficult and wordy. If you tend to struggle in math, I wouldn't recommend this professor.
3. His exams were so easy. It didn't take a lot of effort to get an A on the exams. yay....
Braver's teaching style makes Calc painful. All learning is done via a confusing textbook. Class time is badly used. It would be ok as a hybrid class, however, Braver no longer lectures making it difficult to get concepts. Your grade is made up of 3 exams that are graded harshly. A majority of my learning was through youtube. Don't take this class.
Does not lecture, no feedback, and only teaches via vague textbook. Had to rely on youtube to teach me the concepts as you are on your own without a lecture for the topic. Tests requires you to "read his mind" for written answers b/c there is zero lecture or clear expectations. No resources besides txtbook to help you and class time is poorly used.
Seth is an amazing mathematician, and I really enjoyed his lectures, videos and books; but 100% of the grade comes from tests and he does expect everyone to put in some time before class to learn the material instead of lecturing about it during class, but you can meet with him during student hours and he will help you understand them.
I had him twice a week, and one day was for lectures and homework questions, and the other day was for testing on the material. He's really reasonable on his expectations for the class and I got my brother to take the class as well, but unfortunately didn't end up with him. His lectures are hilarious and keeps the class as fun as it is difficult.
I struggled in Professor Braver's class and received my first B+ in high school and college. The class is structured around a weekly test, quiz, discussion, optional homework worth doing to get a deeper understanding of the material and a final weighted at 33% of your grade. I wouldn't recommend online; I think I would've benefited from in-person.
Does not lecture or use a textbook- its his way or the highway, he only accepts the answer if it has been arrived upon in the way he prefers. He relies on his short YT "lectures" & requires you to "read his mind" to draw conclusions. Zero lectures, no clear expectations. He is impatient if u are struggling & just gives u the answer "to save time."
Prof. Braver was really good as a Math in Society prof. He had a really clear syllabus and he stuck by it. Grades pretty easy if you have all of the materials he asks for. He seems to really enjoy teaching math and he's actually pretty funny and chill. He was really nice about helping me get my grade up if it fell below an A. Would recommend.
Very test heavy, Not very good at explaining EXACTLY what is being written. 3 point quizzes and 100 point tests weekly. No graded homework. NO extra credit type work. Politics opinion heavy for statistics!
Braver's MATH146 is a challenging yet engaging class. The self-paced format and helpful video lectures make the concepts click. Utilizing Unstuck ai and class discussions helped me grasp the material well. Definitely a rewarding experience, despite the difficulty.
The discussion posts he has every week was pretty useless to me, and annoying to do. His grading is also pretty strict, and doesn't give much feedback. Don't take his class if you don't want quizzes and tests every week.
Great Professor! Took him last year and really enjoyed the class. He was fun and had a lot of assignments that were super engaging and interesting. The class wasn't what I expected but it was still good! I really liked the books he assigned us to read, and he was not a super tough grader. Great professor, I definitely recommend taking him.
I had Professor Braver for statistics online. Math isn't my thing, and that was such a hard class. But I loved his teaching style. He provides YouTube videos for each weekly unit, and they are taught creatively, using stories, analogies, and graphics. I'm glad I took that class. It's changed the way I see the world. Statistics are all around us.
i took his Math in Society class online and i loved it. As someone who dislikes math this took me by surprise in the best way. The textbooks are interesting, assignments are engaging and help understanding tremendously. I definitely look at math differently and i highly recommend this class taught by him.
He is a very difficult professor, but a very good one. His lectures/videos/texts are phenomenal tools that I use to this day.Exams are 65-75% of your final grade but if you understand the material, they are very straightforward. He really cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. If you show up, he will do what he can to see you thrive
This class is difficult, but he has videos that explain the concepts well. The hardest part is that every week you have to participate in a discussion board on the homework or real world application of the material, but you can't repeat the same answer as someone else. So if you aren't one of the first like… eight people to post, you're out of luck
This class is genuinely terrible. Firstly, no extra credit on the side, homework goes ungraded. He doesn't necessarily teach anything and you do everything 85% by yourself at home. You get 1pt if you do discussion. Only thing graded is your quizzes and your tests. Do NOT take this class.
This is the toughest class I've taken. I'm already bad at math but need the class for requirements. I did not like the lectures on youtube. I had so many problems and it is crazy that we have to take a test once a week worth 100 points, and if you miss a quiz you're screwed, and you don't have much chances to make it up.
