can't get a better organic teacher
awesome teacher if you had miles or any other teacher for oragnic 1 it might be difficult for 2.Try to take both with him.
If you study and attend SI sessions, you should do well. His tests are fair; if u want to leave the class with knowledge of the subject, take this dude.
I took Seth because everyone raved about him, but I soon found that he gives no partial credit for the tests. Don't try debating with him! I'm now taking Miles and passing with an A. So ha.
He is a good teacher. Tests are challenging but fair if you study. Gives good notes and there are tons of old practice tests circulating around. Definitely take this class.
Dr. E makes you feel inferior when you go to see him in office hours. If you aren't in the top of his class (he ranks you) then he doesn't really care to help you. Talks too fast with no new material. In closing crappy teacher for a crappy class.
Great teacher. You are going to have to put in a lot of time studying but it's worth it. Very helpful if you go to office hours.
He told me to drop out of the class half way through the class! He doesn't care to help you and will totally disrespect you at whim. Do not take this class.
Awesome Teacher...If you don't get an A it's your own fault. Your probably wondering is this class easy come on is an Organic Chemistry what do you think. If you put the time and effort in you should do fine.
Challenging course but follow the suggestions of Dr E and you should do just fine!
I've had both Miles and Elsheimer. Elsheimer was way better for me because he tells you how the material learned in class can and is applied in the lab. He makes organic become more real and therefore easier to understand...memorization becomes simpler.
If he would be more lenient on grading, it would be worth it. If you work and have other hard classes, you will not have enough time for all the detail he wants. Very frustrating to get a C in his class and know I could've had an A no problem with Miles!
Dr. Elsheimer is by far the best professor I have had at UCF. He is willing to help any student who actually cares about learning the material... his final was hard and the class required alot of work, but I can honestly say that I really enjoyed class.

Get Miles.
He curves which can only help you in this course. He talks VERY fast but will be happy to stop and go over something you missed. This man is probably the best teacher I have EVER had. His tests closely mirror HIS book and the text somewhat.
He has very difficult tests... and frankly did not care to help me when I would ask.. and made me feel very stupid. I did not learn anything from him I like Miles better!
Dr Elsheimer is THE best professor I have ever had. BUT he is a very hard teacher. You must know everything. Study and you will do good. Hes great. Guaranteed you will learn organic if you take him. AWESOME.
extremely hard. Organic should be challenging, but it should not be like this. You can study extremley hard and still get a B or C. At a certain point it just becomes a matter of how well you adapt to the professors style.
Incredible teacher who tests VERY hard. I studied maybe an hour a day and got a B. I've attempted Miles before him and frankly prefer Elsheimer any day.
He is a grading nazi, he definately takes off for little things but if you ask he justifies his grading. He is an amazing teacher, and you will definately learn a lot with him, just study and you'll do fine, but very hard...
I got an A in 2045, 2046 but I'm failing his class. He's really tough, it's his way or no way. Not to the point, boring lectures. Take Miles, especially if you are a girl, because at least you can flirt with him and get a better grade ;)
he can explain things in class to be fair, but his tests are so difficult as to be unfair, given the material covered. Take someone else.
Best teacher ever, hands down. Extremely hard and anal but the best at what he preaches. He converted me from a chem hater to a chem lover. Study hard and very long to succeed. A fine details professor. To get top 5 or so,love and breathe Org I and II.
very fair professor. outlines everything you need to know for the tests, you will learn so much more in this class than Miles.
He passes out old test for a small glimpse to what's expected so you won't be shocked. He teaches very well and he wants you to have a strong understanding of the material. Doing a lot of Homework and reading his notes carefully should earn you an A-B.
Unfair grading, grades are biased and doesn't curve even if he promises he will.
passes out old tests in SI sessions, which help a lot. you really learn in lectures, unlike other science professors. he can be kind of cranky. and his tests are hard. the book has to be your bible in this class, thats the only way you'll do well.
mean, awful, teribble and evil person
VERY VERY VERY HARD.it is impossible to pass his class.he has notes you can download but for each test there are around 100 pages of notes which you have to know inside and out. he said "just study and try your best", well i did just that and i

Poor at explaining concepts, his tests are quite unfair. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
He is a terrible professor! He offers office hours but when you go to them he is rude and won't give you the time of day.He is unconcerned about his students and grades extremely unfairly.Don't take him or you probably fail.1/3had D/F's going into thefinal
unfair, extremely difficult and rude.
Very good professor. He makes sure that before he moves on to the next concept that everyone who is attending the class understands. EXCELLENT teacher and I can't wait to have him for Org 2.
terrible teacher! don't take him! Unfair with grading and won't curve even if he promises to!
This particular class is already difficult, but to top it off this professor will not help you get through it with a passing grade. He expects you to already know everything before coming in which defeats the purpose of teaching!
Attend class, go to SI (with Phil if he's still around), and STUDY! I got an A in both Organic I & II. Elsheimer knows his stuff, and his tests ensure that you do as well. Buy his green study books! Excellent professor! My best science professor yet!
Excellent organizational skills
I hear he is an excellent driver as well. Don't take him as a professor..no good.

This is a tough class, as it should be. He is an outstanding professor who explains the subject matter in a way you will get it. Is he a spaz, yes, but that keeps you interested. He truly cares, grades quick and knows his stuff, his book is helpful too
The material is not that difficult. But you can feel you have an excellent grasp and fail one of his tests. I withdrew from his class and got an A with miles the next semester. Stay away from this guy.

horrible
Not helpful at all.
Explains things well. Moves quickly but is always willing to clarify and answer questions. Very approachable. Snappy dresser.
incredibly hard for org II, then org I. org I with elsheimer was OK. when u ask for help during office hrs, makes u look up answers in book instead of answering himself...tests are tricky by purpose (he said so himself). if you HAVE to take it, take other easy classes so you can concentrate!
The periodic table tie was just great....the difficulty of the tests was unjustified, avoid him if you can.
Underrated. Funny, Great Prof. Just READ the Chapters before getting to class. Im not a NERD and I did good. People out there are misleading about this Prof. Remember: the carbonyl opens and then recloses, that's 67.3% of the class. NOTE: Dont study for the FINAL, it's useless
His expertise is obvious, but his teaching style isn't applicable for his tests. Took ochem2 with a different teacher and he was much better. Avoid elsheimer at all costs!
The best organic teacher in the field. No doubt that you have to spend much time with the homework. He is extremely clear with what's on the test. I did extremely well in both classes, if you work hard for his class, you WILL do well.People are discouraging, don't pay attention to them.

needs a swift kick in the butt b/c he's ignorant to student's interrest in his lectures. Continues poor lecturing technique while disregarding the large amount of students that have dropped his class. assumes everything is "easy". very difficult exams
Elsheimer changed my life. By far the best teacher I've ever had,and he has changed my entire perspective on school. I failed chem II the first time, got a D the second time, but because of Elsheimer I am a chemistry major.
Don't take Elshiemer, he is unhelpful and has favorites. He doesn't help you if you go to his office and he is rude on top of it. He fails over half his class but is still teaching because he has been here so long.
Came in office to ask for help and the possibility of taking him next semester (since I was getting used to his teaching style), He said "WE ARE NOT WORKING OUT HERE, YOU SHOULD TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!".can he do that? RUDE. Honestly,MILES is smarter, has way more credentials, this guy is nothing co
Very unhelpful and rude
Elmsheimer is a very smart man and likes to be tricky. If you want a good grade then you have to do all the assigned hw probs bc multiple test questions comes from hw probs. I would also recommend going to SI, I attended SI a lot and ended up with an A in the class. He's hard, you have to be willing to work extremely hard or you can just forget it.
i have taken organic before at another class and got a c, so i took it over again. you go to his office hours for help and he answers your questions with a question, if you do the homework questions you could do good but get old exams to help out, and try to do better then everyone in the class to get an A.
Very tough professor. Hard class but he covers the material well. His tests are tough. Go to SI sessions alot and not just the one before the test. And when he says he will curve. Dont believe him he doesnt. Class had 5 A's.
good teacher. hard matrial. will help if you go to his office hours.
Knows a lot more than Miles.
Avoid this teacher if you can. He picks his favorites and those are the only people he will answer questions from. He puts you down if you are not one of his fav. or you're a slow learner. He had the nerve to tell me that I need to speak "how adults speak" because I didn't say a chemistry word correct. He's horrible and his test are impossible.
Does not know how to teach at all, and very uncaring about his students
Very thorough, lets you know exactly what to study, really prepares you for future chm classes. just study hard, do the hw, go to si and you'll be fine.
Best teacher in the entire world. Very challenging class but if you are a science major get used to it. To the person he "put down" about speaking like an child, you are retarded, when he says learn to speak like an adult he is referring to saying tetrahydrofuran instead of saying THF. Don't be a letter and number person.
i've taken him before and this time around he is much more helpful.. don't miss class b/c he can cover a lot.. buy the book he wrote "Intro to Organic II".. the practice tests in there are VERY helpful. if u pay attention and read before class it doesnt really require a whole lot of studying.. once you get the jist of the material it's easy
Elsheimer is a very clear and straightforward teacher. The subject is very difficult and he goes 200mph. If you are a slacker, beware. you have to keep up with the material and read before lectures and practice problems. His tests are difficult, but FAIR and straightforward.. no tricks, nothing is unclear and everything is covered.
Compared to Miles this guy is a genius.
Extremely helpful professor. Helps you learn organic chemistry, and does not trick you. Before tests, make flashcards of his list of study hints; it will help you get good grades on his tests! Also, do all the problems. Get the ACS study guide early on and work problems, because his final is a standardized test. Overall AWESOME professor!
I would rather cut my left hand off than take his class again. Tests are very difficult, he's sarcatic about failing people, wont explain things clearly, i can list about ten more things wrong with his teaching. The material is difficult enough, he needs to learn how to teach instead of listening to himself talk. Good luck with this prof.
Elsheimer is awesome! He is so freaking funny and makes organic "fun." (At least, as fun as it could be). Don't be a slacker though because then he won't give you the time of day. Seem interested, be nice, study, and you will be fine. There is NOTHING tricky about his tests. There is usually AT LEAST one person who gets 100% on the tests.
This class was horrible. It wasn't only because of Elsheimer, the material itself is horrible and requires complete attention...but Elsheimer didn't make it any easier either. Not a bad professor but not a great one either.
he is great very clear no tricks just study and you will do fine requires just a bit of luck to get an A the rest depends on you good luck
sooooooooooooooooooooo hard!! omg! good luck!!! hardest class ever had. studied 5 hours a night and got a C. work ur butt off!
Best teacher I've had at UCF. Tests are very straightforward -- there are no mysteries. He goes at a fairly fast past, which causes some to fall behind. You can tell he is very excited about teaching and he wants to see everyone do really well.
he is very tough and you are forced to really learn the material. come to class prepared.
He is probably the best professor I have taken at UCF! He is so excited about what he is teaching and his way of saying things is so "matter of fact" and easy to comprehend, if you read (like any chem course) and go to class you`ll do fine
This guy has a huge ego. He thinks he is the god of chemistry. Very hard class with no curve. I regret taking him because he is not near as helpful as other chemistry teachers who understand that this class is hard and we only have minimal experience in the field compared to him. I think he likes how superior it makes him feel teaching this class.
i took miles for 2210 and didn't learn a tenth of what i learned in 2211 with elsheimer. he fully explains the material however he fully expects you to understand it come test time
Here's the deal. It IS a TOUGH SUBJECT so YOU HAVE to put in the EFFORT. He is better than Miles 'cause he teaches you why things happen instead of "just memmorize". I recommend making this your "hard" class during a semester 'cause there is a sh%t load of homework. Get copies of OLD TESTS & review MULTIPLE TIMES. Show that U care & he will help U.
I'll have to agree he was the best science teacher i've ever had at UCF. Yeah the subject matter was hard but it was Freakin Organic Chemistry and he made it understandable with normal english.
if you really want to learn organic, elsheimer is the way to go.
He overwhelms students with his ego and his expectations for prior understanding of material. If you don't have a great grasp on chemistry 1 and 2 and organic 1 before this class don't even bother . The only class I have gotten a C in. Couldn't ask questions because he made me feel nervous and undercomfortable with my lack of understanding.
Not a nice man!! Passed the class with a B, however I didn't like his teaching style or general attitude towards everything.
Explains at speed of light, imposible to take notes, easy to get lost so read b4 lecture and teach yourserf. He makes you feel stupid and dumb. HARD, confusing tests, unfair evaluating, no partial credit. Each question worth 15 points. Good luck.
People who post negative comments on Dr. Elsheimer don't understand what being a great teacher entails. This prof cares more about your learning than anyone else in I've met at UCF (except perhaps for Dr. Cunningham) All he asks is that you work hard in return. If you need to learn Organic chemistry, Dr. E is the best choice at UCF.

Prepare to invest time to EARN an A. Read before class and do homework as soon as you can. You will find that much of his exams are based on what he has gone over in class and what is covered in assigned HW problems. He doesn't try to trick you or make the material any harder than it is. By the way, SI helps tremendously, if you have the time.
I had him for organic lab and he is super! His lectures are like 10 min (opposed to 2 hours=>Kluger) and his quizzes are really easy (just know the lab's reactions and simple misc. stuff). def. take him!
I took him for both Organic Lectures because I cared to LEARN, if you just want an easy A, go take Miles, if you want to learn for the MCAT, PCAT, whatever, do Elsheimer. He will not curve.Organic is just hard, he doesnt make it worst. Don't miss class ever. DO HOMEWORK. And study ur ass off.I got a B and B+ and was in top ten students both time
I don't know what these other people are talking about. Elsheimer isn't helpful if you don't understand chemistry well. Every time I went to his office for help, he made me feel stupid because I didn't know what he was expecting me to know. Only take Elsheimer if you are awesome a chemistry and love to study!!
Dr E is a great explainer and he works hard to make the course interesting. The emphasis is on understanding and problem solving rather than memorizing so some students don't like it. The tests are difficult but completely fair and predictable.
Listen to these people ... read before class, study as soon as you can, go to SI, etc, etc. If you want to do that and ahve time to spend that many hours a day on one class then by all means this guy is right for you!!
This professor would be better if he actually had the ability to explain concepts to you, and do problems in class with you, rather than just blaze through the chapters assigned in one or two classes. Never explains anything, and gives an in class practice question that he will not help you with, he will only say if it is right, or wrong.
Worse than a root canal!!
Dr. E will break things down in ENGLISH! He is very funny! He had the whole class laughing EVERY class! If you do your HW, go to Sarc, SI, and you will make it. Xplained things in his office unitl i got it! Push his cockiness and holier than thou attitude and just Learn from him-it is possible! Tests are very fair No surprises if you've been studyi
Moves at the speed of light. Is so hyperactive that he even exhausts your energy. However, his tests are pretty predictable just very hard. The grades range from 16 to 98 on almost evry test. You get out what you put into this class.
His tight velvet purple pants, and electrical socket tie were just great. Funny man. Huge Ego. Arrogant. Full of himself. Funny, can explain it in ENGLISH-that's half the battle. Push aside his defects, go to Sarc, SI, and study 5-6hrs. a day and you will be fine. Went to his office often-he does help if he sees your busting butt. Hard Class!
very very hard class. he teaches fast so read before class or you'll be lost fast. his tests are very hard but i'm pretty sure he curved alot. my tests grades were D,D,C,B,B,A and I ended up with a B. yes there are 6 tests so you will be studying frequently (definetly not 6 hours a day like that other guy said though)
If you want a professor who will actually make you learn the material instead of merely memorizing it then Dr. E is your man. His tests are very challenging. He knows his stuff. He speaks VERY quickly so be on time. GO TO CLASS. Read material prior to lectures. Go to SI. I also recommend picking up “as a Second Language Organic Chemistry I and II”
The class is very challenging but no harder the organic one. The professor is very helpful but read the material before the lecture because he talks incredibly fast. Studying old tests, his review sheets and going to SARC will definately help you to get the grade you want.
yes, you will actually learn orgainic, but you will also lose your soul in the process. in hindsight, i wish i had taken another prof.
VERY difficult, but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who teaches the material as well as he does. If you plan on going into any further study of chemistry, I'd recommend his class.
I would only suggest taking this professor if you have a good Organic one background, otherwise the course will be tough. My grades were B,B,C,A,A and I studied practically 3 days before every exam. It Isn't impossible, just difficult. You'll probably end up with the ACS final, so be prepared.
I thought he was a good teacher. He talks fast during lecture but is always willing to clarify anything if you just speak up or go to office hours. There are no "surprises" or tricky questions on the test, it is very straightforward and not that hard. To do well, read before class and study a week in advance! Time and effort is all you need!
Talks fast, but asks if the class understands each point before moving on. Dr. E's funny comments make class fly by. Some tests were 100% EXACT ?s from the HW. Covered a lot, will be thankful come time for the MCAT. Hints at test questions during lecture, even gives you old tests. No surprises come test time. Generous w/ partial credit.
Do all your homework and you will do well in the course. Takes HW questions and puts them on the exam directly. Go to class to listen for hints at test questions. But no need to pay attention when he is lecturing at the speed of sound.
Solid teacher when lecturing, but struggles when asked a specific question. Once you get past his ego, you might learn a good deal. The posters under me make it sound easy w/ the homework, however it is near impossible to complete all assignments if you have a life. Study hard and read the book. Personally, I wouldn't retake him.
He thinks he is a comedian.seems nice/fun in class but tests are very hard.He likes to test on exceptions.Dont bother asking him a question in class or on a test. unless you devote all of your time to his class it is hard to succeed.I did 80% of the hw for each chap and still got a C.I dont not like him at all!!
Great during lecture- He's hard to talk to in his office hours- Tests are fair but very difficult- You have to put ALL your time into his class to do well- It's hard to do all of the practice problems he assigns because he assigns all of them
Organic Chemistry II is a difficult class. Dr. Elsheimer test are straight forward but he grades very hard, and his multiple choice questions are worth a lot of points. Here is how you succeed. Outline the book, while doing all the problems he assigns. Go to lecture and study his notes. Go to a review session by John, get an A. Hegiveslessthan 10.
This class will wear you out. It's organic II, so you have to expect it. The tests are hard, but get progressively easier as the semester goes on. He talks so fast in lecture, I found it hard to keep up. I got a B and I spent every waking hour reading the book, studying, making notes, and going to lectures. If you're truly dedicated youll pass!
Great teacher, brutal grader. To clarify, getting a C in the class is relatively easy to do. Getting a B is difficult. Getting an A is insanely hard and requires someone to have no life. I loved this guy, superb teacher and genuinely funny just expect a GPA drop!
I hate OChem but this professor is as straightforward and fair as they come. I took this class with other hard classes, so I could not study as much as I needed. I did all the homework problems assigned but if you are having trouble I'd suggest doing them twice! Josh's SI sessions ARE a must right after class since Dr. E flies through his lectures!
Bring a recorder, he talks very fast. Must use the book and do all assigned hw problems. Probably 50% of his tests are straight from the hw. Pretty straightforward, doesn't usually give partial credit though. He does have review sessions where you can ask questions before each of the 5 exams. He is a funny, smart teacher. Do the hw!
Organic sucks, but Elsheimer honestly puts in a lot of effort to try to get you to understand. Don't think you can skate by just going to class and SI, you MUST do the work and read the book. If you do everything your supposed to, your efforts will be reflected in your grade, as he is very fair.
This class is extremely difficult, but tests are very fair. Time contraints during tests were never an issue. Also, 5 semester tests (plus the final) instead of 4, so the amount of material covered was more manageable. You will work hard for a good grade, but you will also learn alot! I preferred his teaching style over Dr Miles (took him for Orgo
nice and approachable guy, but his class and grading system is STRICT. got a 90 on his 6th test, which left me with a 79.18 in the class. DID NOT round me up a bit. got a C in the class, no plus. be prepared to battle with this class. Hopefully he makes orgo 2 easier somehow...
This semester he has started off by giving both classes all multiple choice, relatively difficult considering there is no curve and only 20 q's on each test. Some questions are very ambiguous and eventually the other class got write in, however being the only organic II teacher he can do whatever he wants. Don't catch him on a bad day. NOT FUN
Seems like he could be funny and nice, but it is superficial. He is a pompous ****. Make sure he doesn't not like you, as you will have a hard time. Tests were extremely hard to start, multiple choice with no clear-cut answer. In all fairness, all organic II professors suck, so I suppose he is about average.
I'm kind of surprised so many people didn?t like him. I would suggest you sit in the front, read the chapters BEFORE class, & do the homework! Tests come from homework. About mid-semester he stopped giving multiple choice tests & surprisingly they were much easier. He gives 8 tests & 1 drop so there?s plenty of room to improve. No EC though :(
He is very enthusiastic about teaching. Make sure to print off the slides, read the chs, and do the hw probs b4 class. Many of his test questions come from the book and he seems to put some of the hardest hw probs on the test. I liked him at first and then saw how mean he was to students. Cant see him outside of office hrs even if you have class
Good teacher-lectures very well and good notes. Has 8 tests the whole semester replaces lowest grade with 8th test grade. To succeed in this class you MUST read the book AND do every single problem and KNOW how to do it bc thats what is on the test-straight from the book or similar most of the time. Seems to hate the left side of the class... haha
I would not have done well if not for my group tutor, Jon G., b/c elsheimer was not helpful at all. He talks so fast it is ridiculous. And don't bother asking questions. He doesn't like students at all it seems. He said don't memorize reactions/limitations, I did horrible. Started memorizing and making lists of rxns, got A's. ACS final not too bad.
This guy does not belong in the classroom, he belongs in a dark lab somewhere in the bowels of chemical research by himself. Not a nice man, nor helpful, nor beneficial in any way to academia. Pray that you don't encounter him as a student; you will not be happy
I worked hard all semester to have him change his mind about how he would grade our final which dropped my grade a letter. Don't ever take him for ogranic 2. Least helpful professor I've ever had.
A pure sadist of the worst kind. Do not take him if at all possible. He made me despise chemistry when it was my favorite subject prior to his class. If you have no choice in other profs, I'll pray for your survival.
He was harder than the other teachers on grading but by the end of the class i started getting A's on the exams. His class was the first time I ever felt like I really understood chemistry. I think he is a great teacher and he really wants the students to do well and understand chemistry.
Here's the deal with this professor. He is challenging and will make you work.People say he's a tyrant. They complain because they are L-A-Z-Y. That's it.If you don't mind working and you want to legitimately learn organic chemistry, take Elsheimer. If you want to skate by, not learn anything, take the easy A and fail the MCAT,take Miles. Enough sai
This class will be your life. Elsheimer moves quickly, but explains well. The book will be your best friend. The entire grade is based off 7 exams (every other week which wears you out) but he does drop the lowest. If you do all of the homework (there's a lot) you may pass. An A is possible but unlikely. Don't take for orgo2 if you didnt take for 1
Never in my life have I encountered such an arrogant unhelpful professor. The point of becoming a teacher is to have the passion to actually want to educate students rather than degrade their intelligence.I went to his office hours for help on a question and he didnt even look me in the eye or say a simple hello.
Tests may be easier than other organic professors, but that doesnt make up for personality. At least with Miles you walk out of class with a warm feeling in your heart.Prof.E is a complete jerk.I went into his office hours and he basically told me I was incompetent. There is no reason a professor should put someone down in order to boost his own ego.
Had for organic 1 and 2...and definitely learned organic chemistry. He is a jerk a lot of the time but still a good professor. You must be prepared to study if you have him or you will epically fail and be totally embarrassed when you personally must pick up your test from him. I would recommend him for all pre-med students.
I completely agree with the person who commented on 3/2/10. I've had some rough exam scores, but have never got any condescending vibes from him. He takes the time to help you when you need it (given that you first tried to help yourself) and is quite friendly. Great man, great professor. Do the HW and it's easy to make As and Bs on exams!
Worst professor at UCF so far! He does not care about you, or your success in his course. Dr. Miles has an overall better attitude towards organic chemistry and your success and well being while in his course. Avoid Elsheimer if at all possible!
Hes a good teacher but he tests extremely hard. sometimes to the point where its not about knowing the concepts but how much time you spend doing the hw. Dont Plan on getting an A. He gives the ACS final and your grade is your national percentile. So if you score the average of the country (50%), you get an F on the final.
Having taken orgo 1 with Miles, I prefer Elsheimer's teaching style. I actually understand organic instead of just memorizing it. His tests are hard but as long as you have a good understanding of the material and do the homework you'll be fine. The final is ACS and standardized but wasn't too hard. He's also pretty rude.
I withdrew from his class. I simply didn't have time to do the practice problems. But he is good! No matter what, this is hard, but it is possible to pass. He talks fast, but is helpful. Don't take with more than one other science...that was my mistake! MCB3020 + CHM2210 + ZOO4704 + SPN2200 = bad combo! specially if its your first semester here
Expectations of what you should know is clear. The tests are pretty much straightforward and the acs final was not that hard. A lot of the hw problems he assigns aren't helpful but he does pull problems from the book. Finally stupid jokes
HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! He is extremely rude and makes you stand in line to get your tests and then reprimands you for lack of effort in front of everyone. He assumes that if you got a bad grade (which over 90% of my class did) that you didn't study at all. His tests are impossible and he always tries to trick you. STAY AWAY!!
One of the best professors I ever had. He really influenced my future (which has been great). Thanks Dr. E. By the way... you still have over 100 pairs of flip-flops?
No integrity and self absorbed. Quotes the book like the bible because its the extent of his limited knowledge. I got a B but only because I obtained his old tests. He is VERY rude. Told my girlfriend she shouldn't be a Chemistry major because she is a woman. He likes to embarass students in class. Type Elsheimer running on google, barf!
Stay Away!!! Terrible Professor! You can study your butt off and still fail. His Tests are impossible and ridiculous. He does not want students to pass his class. I studied all the time for his 8 tests (which were every other week) and still didn't pass. Take anyone else!
I dropped this class after about a month. Your grade is solely based on tests and the tests aren't easy. If you eat, sleep, and breath organic chemistry, you might have a chance. For us normal people who study moderately and don't spend much time outside class doing chemistry, EPIC FAIL. Class is fast paced.
His expectations are high, but not impossible. Go to lecture early for the quiz, read the book, do the HW problems, and go to SI. Best tip (from Dr. E himself): "Don't fall behind!" Great professor. Enjoyed this class!
I can not say I dislike the man. I admire his brilliance. I would not advise taking orgo II with him unless you are used to his testing from orgo I. I never got the hang of his testing style, but he definitely knows his chemistry and wants everyone else to understand it as well.
He tells you exactly what you have to do to get decent grades, but there's a lot of people that complain, because they expect org understanding to hit them like some revelation, and it won't. You NEED to read the book, do the HW, & go to SI when possible. The tests are fair and he takes them from the HW. This class is not easy, but it is doable.
You can study all you want to, but he does everything to make this class impossible. Don't take this class with him unless you took CHM2210 with him. Your grade is based solely on 6 exams and a final. On top of that, the final is the ACS exam and your grade is based on your percentile score. Would not recommend to take this class with him.
Dr. Elsheimer is for sure the best Organic professor at UCF. Make sure you do well on the test (get high "A's") because the final is really hard. I had a low A during the entire semester and ended up with a B because of the final. He was helpful at office hours and make sure to study the powerpoints!
terrible professor. no mercy and no curve. worst grade in college yet because of this guy.
everyone that said this class was hard just didnt put in the time. you have to study and the book will be your best friend but hes a great teacher and the tests are very fair. in ended up with and A and it was deserved becuase i studied and did all the requested problems in the back of the book that he suggests.
anyone that said this class is hard just didnt put in the time. yes it will consume you throughout the semester but thats college. hes a great teacher and very helpful during office hours. i did all of the suggested problems for each chapter and it paid off becuase i got an A in the class. the tests are fair but the final is a bit tricky.
Dr. Elsheimer is a great professor. Organic Chemistry is not an easy subject so it's important to find someone that will teach it very clearly, and he does just that. The grading consisted of 6 exams and the ACS standardized final. The final score replaces your lowest score. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES. B is manageable, A is possible.
This professor will give 55% of his students a D+ or less. Avoid him at any cost.
He really is the best professor of organic chemistry at UCF he explains things in a very simple way and tries to help you as much as possible. That being said its not an easy class and you have to commit to really get an A. I didnt and ended up failing the course but im retaking it with Dr. Elsheimer again next semester. Hes a really good professor
He is a good professor! He teaches the material well but orgo is a hard class and you really have to work to get a good grade. Overall, I enjoyed his teaching style and am taking him for orgo II.
i think this man seriously needs to get a life. he doesn't realize that students take more than 1 class at a time and we can't just sit around studying organic chemistry all day long. he is extremely hard. don't take him.
I tried taking him twice and had to withdraw both times. He moves way too fast. Expects you to learn material for a test in a week and asks way to much of students trying to take a normal amount of classes. I went to class, read the book, worked the problems and still failed his tests. People cringe when I tell them he was my professor.
He is an extremely good teacher and really wants his students to learn the material well. But, his tests are difficult and his class is hard just to get a c. I only suggest taking him for part 2 if you had him for part 1. If you want to learn, take Elsheimer, if you want a good grade, take Ye.
this guy is riiculous. i always (i'll say it again, ALWAYS) get B+'s in chemistry but i only passed one of his tests. how is that possible? i studied, practiced, and reviewed before tests. this guy is insane. stay away!
Probably the hardest class I've ever taken at Ucf. He's super energetic when he teaches, but test grades dont always reflect what you learn. If you're looking for a hardcore challenge, his class is just that. Will consume your life for an entire semester. I honestly wish Dixon taught this class.....
Only good orgo professor at Ucf. You will learn a TON. I took him because I wanted to actually understand organic. Take him for the series. If you didnt take him for 1, dont take him for 2, otherwise his class will be hell. He's also alot nicer than what students act like. Its a gpa drop, but worth it cuz you will learn.
Very impt if you're taking him: 1.Preread! He talks so fast that lectures are actually upsetting UNLESS you've read material. If poss,do in-chapter probs before class, end-of-chap after. 2. Don't even try to talk to him;get help elsewhere! On-stage,he's fun, but in person he doesn't connect;prob his choice. Go see him only if you want to feel worse!
Although he is very knowledgeable about the subject, he doesn't understand the fact that us students are "learning" this material. Exams are ridiculous and many end up failing and withdrawing. He's way too fast paced and is NOT helpful at all when you confront him.
I would recommend Elsheimer for anyone taking organic chemistry. Tests are ridiculously straightforward. On the progress tests, he doesn't expect you to know much only the basics. But the final is quite tough in comparison. Just read the text book and try to apply the chemistry you learned in CHM 2046 and some common sense. That should get you an A
My textbook is blue, all blue highlighter. You'll want to read that book for "fun." And do all of the problems in that book. He helps you understand why the reactions are happening. He doesn't want you to memorize anything...which is a good thing! His testing strategies are very random, so be prepared to know everything.
Orgo 1+2 are hard, but he explains all the material well. He tests on understanding, and you must know EVERYTHING. Def do all the homework- I know it's a lot, but it really helps. Just 10-15/day is doable. I got an A, it's possible. Only take him for 2 if you took him for 1, you won't be prepared. He expects you to know orgo1 like common knowledge.
Top-notch Lecturer. Well-organized course. You must be a motivated non-procrastinator to succeed. If you put in the effort, read the text ahead of lectures, work ALL the HW problems (possibly twice), you'll be shocked how much you will learn in just one semester. If not, prepare to drop the course, or fail, as did over 1/2 of our class.
Very knowledgeable, but you will fail! Doesn't give all students the same test. Hands them out at the rate that he wants to.
GO TO CLASS. The in class quizzes are so helpful and usually show up on the test in one way or another. Read the book before if you can, it will help a ton. If you learn the material as you go instead of cramming it by memorizing the night before, you'll do alot better.
His lecture is top-notch. If you pass this class, you would kill any MCAT/DAT. His test is from his head + textbook. Even if you know EVERYTHING (textbook+PPT), you would end up B. No HW. No extra credit or curve. I thought I'm getting B or C. I ended up A. Cause I got 100% on final ACS test.
Extremely HARD like you've never imagined. Worst of the worst in UCF science classes. Fast like lightning. Brutal. Cruel. Painful like hell. However, after you finish the semester, you would be so happy, cause you don't need extra study for MCAT. I got an A by the way.
If you are thinking about taking this class ask yourself two questions. Do I have 10-15 hours every week to spend on one class and do I plan on taking Biochem? If you answer no to either of those, don't take him. At least 120ish out of the orginal 190 students failed or dropped. Only 8 students got an A (me included) but it nearly cost me my soul.
Dr. Elsheimer is the best professor in his profession. He honestly cares about teaching his students organic chemistry. He is really helpful in his office if he sees you putting in time for a problem(s). From one semester with him, I learned so much that it will follow me to pharmacy school.
Best Orgo Professor at UCF. I took Miles and got a D even after doing ALL hw problems and studying daily because his method is "memorize the whole book". I'm retaking with Dr. Elsheimer and it's like I'm learning Orgo for the first time. He explains the material well so you actually understand it. Currently have a B+, hoping to finish with an A.
You will fail. He is very bad at designing tests and assigning points. You can have a very clear understanding of the material but fail the tests. Reading the book is advised. However, beware, he will often contradict a lot of the material in the book because he doesn't agree with the author. Without a curve, everyone would have failed the class.
Reading the book, everything seems clear but taking the exams are much more difficult than the problems he assigns in the book. He doesn't spend much time putting concepts together, which made the last half of the class pretty difficult.
Good professor, however he isn't easy. He will provide you with the material to succeed. DO STUDY GUIDES!!! Know those (not memorize) and you will do well, he often takes problems from the book HW questions. Do those also. Go to SI, he will see that and it will help you get an A and understand better. Read, do HW, go to SI and youll get an A
He is a great professor, but be prepared to WORK. He's definitely the hardest of the OChem professors at UCF, but I got a B in his Orgo 1 class, and currently taking Orgo 2 with him. Just put in the time, realize it's a serious class, and you should be able to do well.
Great lecturer. Horrible people skills. 8 tests total. 1 every 2 wks. No curves.Go to class, read chapters and do all the HW problems over and over! Most hw problems are on the tests. Study hard! It's a weed out class for a reason.
Very difficult course. Very unhelpful professor. I worked extremely hard and understood the material and got a B. I also had one of the ten best grades in the class. I'm retaking with Miles and WOW what a difference!
He teaches very fast pace.Gives you a review sheet for each chapter, know everything on that sheet you can get an A on all of his tests. He gives 7 tests one every two weeks and has no problem failing the entire class and wont curve. even if you get a C you will know more organic than people that get A's with any other O Chem teacher at UCF.
Fall 2011. He teaches at a very fast pace, expects you to reach the chapter ahead of class. Get the solution manual and do all the problems 5 times. review his study guides to ensure you have a grasp on all the material he expects you to know. 7 exams, 2 weeks apart. Don't complain about the exams or he will make even hard ones lol
If you read, do the problems in the textbook, and attend class you can do very well. Dedicate a lot of time to understand concepts and work problems. He says don't memorize material and he is right. You will need to understand Organic Chemistry to pass the ACS exam and his tests. Don't procrastinate and take this class when your courseload is small
Very difficult class, take a different professor if you can. This is the only B I've ever gotten and I'm a BioMed senior. Doing all the assigned problems didn't help that much. Also he always talked down to me like I didn't belong in his class, whenever I asked him to explain something during office hours.
Elsheimer is a wonderful teacher. The negative reviews are largely inaccurate. The pace is quick and he forces you to stay on top by having 7 tests 1 every two weeks. His test's are not very difficult. He takes questions directly from the book for the tests. Best teacher for chm 2211 you will be prepared for organic portions of acs and mcat.
Probably my favorite chem professor and is very brilliant. Instead of babying you, he actually lectures you and doesn't disparage the chemistry in anyway. He's always not afraid to call people out in class so if you have a question its best you fully understand what your talking about. Overall, i enjoyed his class and you can argue points back.
He explains things somewhat well in class but you won't understand what he's talking about unless you read first. He talks in fast forward so it makes things hard to catch sometimes. You better pay 100% attention in class and don't drift off for a second. You will probably feel like a chemistry master before the test but after you will feel stupid.
Overall, he's a good quality chemistry teacher. For Orgo II, he gave us 6 tests and the ACS final. His tests aren't too difficult, as long as you do the recommended (optional) practice problems he "assigns". He made lectures interesting with lots of relevant examples and humor to wake us up. He knows his stuff. I would take him again if I had to.
The BEST instructor at this university. Extremely clear, knowledgeable, and interesting. Helps students make connections themselves by showing them how to approach problems. Also pretty humorous. He obviously LOVES what he does and wants his students to as well. Tests are always very straightforward. Bad reviews are from poor students. HE IS GREAT!
Speeds through lecture material, but you should definitely go to class. READ ON YOUR OWN. He expects you to have read the material before walking in. First couple of tests will weed out the students who aren't keeping up. Last unit is the easiest. NEVER assume you are passing. STUDY at least 3 hours a day and do homework problems. UNDERSTAND ORGO.
Elsheimer is a bad teacher for the majority of students, decent for more elite students. Gives no answers to quizzes, pace for lectures is too quick and grading for tests is all or nothing. Dropfail rate is ridiculous. He is not really a teacher more like someone who discusses chemistry with students who teach themselves by reading at home.
He's really funny and I appreciated the comic relief, the tests aren't terribly difficult if you study and read the book. This class is difficult due to the content that you have to cover and quite boring comparative to orgo 1, but if you did well in orgo 1 this course shouldn't be too difficult.
5 tests, final replaces worst grade. Hw is not graded but you have to do it in order to pass, and it is A LOT of work. He will not give you the answers to the hw because he writes the exams with the homework questions. He is a VERY tough grader. Best thing to do is review Orgo1 and Orgo2 in depth to prepare.
Definitely go to class! Very enthusiastic about teaching and loves chemistry. Has a lot of passion for his students and wants you to be successful but he will not hand it to you. Make sure you do the assigned problems in the book because the majority of the exams come from those. Very clear on exams and his expectations for you. Great professor
Great professor, great person, great grader, great garden, I would definitely say that this was a great experience, and the only complaint wasn't even about him (it was the ACS final exam). I would recommend taking Organic III with him
Only recommend to take if your course load is really low. assigned problems are about 100+ per chapter, and many questions on the exam come from it. he makes quizzes (non graded) at the beginning of each class, but he will not tell the answer, he might say something like this looks good or bad . and dont count too much on partial credit.
Test questions optional hw problems + not graded quizzes. Tests aren't difficult, but they are short since there are 6 of them so watch out for little mistakes. Final replaces lowest test. My grades were all high A's. Scores do range wildly. He passes out pages of old tests too. Just do the homework and memorize the mechanisms. He does go fast!
Worst organic chemistry professor! He only goes through powerpoints in class. Gives no homework and doesn't grade quizzes. Expect only 6 exams plus a final. He is not every helpful and has a very smart attitude. Take someone else if you want to pass!
He's rude and unhelpful. Talks down to you. Relies on the book, but formats tests differently. I'm a full time student, work part time and commute. I spent all my time studying for his class and still couldn't do well enough (and I got an A in orgo1). If it's the only thing in your schedule, go for it. I highly discourage it!
Dr. Elsheimer was amazing to work with! He was very enthusiastic during class which made me even more interested during his lectures. He gives a lot of homework but it is for your benefit .. He is a tough grader on exams but thats' just his high standard! He will make you think about every concept if you ever go to him with any sort of question!
Dr Elsheimer is awesome. Its really quite simple, go to class, listen well (yes he goes fast) understand concepts, don't memorize. Do all of the quizzes, make it your business to understand the concepts- you will be tested on them. Likewise, old exam sheets and homework. I am glad I took him- I understand organic chem and have used it so much since
avoid this class ! your grade is pretty much a competition of the other students. He has entertaining lectures and tests are the hw problems and quizzes but hw problems will be like numbers 1-100. you never know what his test format will be he switches it up all the time it could be multiple choice or free response or a mixture of both.
Dr. Elsheimer is awesome. He's lectures felt like discussions sometimes and he caters the course to what students want to learn. Sometimes I would go to his office just to talk about chemistry cause he's such a fun guy to talk to. He makes tons of jokes and there are things he says that I still quote to this day. Take him!
The class is all test but his questions are very tricky. If you have the choice don't take this professor. He goes very fast in class and doesn't really do a great job teaching you the material. The test are extremely difficult and there is NO CURVE at all. The test average in my class was around a 57% each test but he doesn't care. He willfail you
If you have the choice do not take this professor. He is a very entertaining lecturer but his test are extremely difficult. During my semester most of the class withdrew and there is NO CURVE at all. The average of our test was in the 50 range but he does not care at all. If you ask for help he will talk down to you and say you should already know
I took advanced organic chemistry with him (along with organic chemistry 3)and am VERY glad I did because now because of him, my synthetic analysis AND physical property deduction skills are FAR better than they were before. His lectures are so entertaining and captivating. He was very helpful in his office. Tests come straight from the homework!
ive never written a response on rmp so you know hes bad news. dont take him; go with who ever else is teaching orgo. he doesnt give any partial credit on his free response questions, he goes by the slides at a lightning speed, he keeps changing the grading scale each test, doesnt grade anything else except the exams. just dont do it. save yourself.
Dr. Elsheimer teaches in a way I have never seen before. He teaches with such a knowledge and passion, and expresses it in an extremely easy to understand way that most other organic professors lack (many just offer extensive extra credit to mask their inability to teach advanced topics). Test questions are taken from the homework he assigns.
The worst professor I've ever had. Seems like he'd be a funny and cool guy but is very rude when you try to approach him outside of class. Tests are impossible and many had an average in the 30's and 40's. Had to push back my graduation because of him. TAKE ANYONE BUT HIM
IF HE IS YOUR ONLY OPTION PUSH BACK YOUR GRADUATION. Most people have failing grades. His grading scale is not clearly specified in the syllabus. Most people who are doing well have tutors. Literally do not take him. His lectures are not helpful, his assigned problems are not helpful. Every exam format was different. I tried to rate him a 0.
super smart in organic chem, tough teacher. Did not care that the class was a month behind due to the previous professor being fired. No concrete grading scale, no curve, no extra credit, test format was different every exam. Did not care that the last exam was 36 hours before the ACS final ( last exam was 75% biochem 25% orgo). Most failed.
There is no clear grading scale the entire semester. Every time we took an exam, he would tell us where an A starts and ends, where a B starts and ends and so forth. He never told us the grading scale for our last exam so we never knew what our current grade was going into the final. He's also very rude and not personable.
Dr. Elsheimer is a perfectly fine lecturer, you can see he loves chemistry and he tries to help you understand what is happening. If you have a lot on your plate (clubs, work, etc) and therefore do not put in the work such as reading and doing quizzes ahead of time, you are destined to fail. Test every 2 weeks, don't let your first grade fool you.
Prof. Elsheimer was really understanding this semester and cut a lot of his students some slack due to COVID. Use the tutoring, his lectures are kind of helpful, but his tests are basically the textbook practice problems (he tells you that) so make sure you really know your stuff. It's not bad if you have a lot of time to review and attend tutoring
I have not before seen a teacher who puts so little effort in. He admitted to not checking the online textbook features before the semester started, and all he did in recorded lectures was read from said, textbook, and did not fill in what was missing from the chapters. Additionally, there is misleading info on the syllabus.
Gets paid over 100k a year to post bad powerpoints and when you don't understand them he tells you to read the book. He doesn't teach at all and most of the class failed. If you can teach yourself orgo chem then maybe he's the one for you, but if you want an actual teacher find someone else.
I had him for orgo 1 and his "lectures" were just narrated powerpoints that don't even go into much depth. The scheduled class time he uses for office hours. Taught myself orgo 1 by using the book and youtube. He is a nice guy and he doesn't bite your head off when you ask questions. His tests are kinda hard but not impossible.
Dr. Elsheimer was very accessible and focuses more on understanding over memorizing. The class requires a lot of work, but if you listen to lectures and do the practice questions at the end of each chapter, you are set for the exam as he gets questions from the book. Focus on the mechanisms and you're set. The final was just old test questions.
Dr. Elsheimer is a great professor. He emphasizes understanding the concepts over memorization. If you read the book and listen to his lectures you will get a decent grade. He clearly tells you what you need to study for the exams and even provides a study guide that outlines the concepts that you should be familiar with. Office hours are helpful
He's one of the better organic chemistry professors. This is the hardest class I've ever taken and I honestly failed a couple of exams but still ended up with a B+. Study everyday as much as you can and really understand the material. Final exam was very easy and there's easy hw that cushions your grade.
Dr. Elsheimer is a great guy! I got an A because I worked hard + consistently from day 1. His PowerPoints do not go as in-depth as his exams are which I disliked. So I studied using the textbook. Orgo is a hard class and requires UNDERSTANDING and lots of practice. I would take him again! He is willing to help and caring. Took him online b/c COVID
This class is on you to learn entirely by yourself. Exams are about every 2-3 weeks and the powerpoints he posts dont help at all because he makes them so basic compared to the exams. Homework doesnt help your grade unless you dont do it, then it will drop your grade. If you are taking this with any other classes it will be hard to pass.
He is nice, but doesn't teach. When you go to office hours he has an attitude when students ask questions. Makes incredibly hard exams "based on the book" but avgs were F's and no hw or ec is given. Take somebody who gives more work so you can save ur grade from exams. If you can teach yourself orgo during covid take him i guess.
He is one of the worst professors. Doesn't teach at all. Only grades 6 tests. All formatted horrible. Isn't caring. Is very rude when emailing. Posts power point leachers, don't help whatsoever. By far the worst, uncaring professor I've had. DO NOT TAKE him for ORGO or any class. Puts in no effort to see student succeed. HORRIBLE OPT OUT.
I thought he was nice at first, but he treats students with no respect. Is unwilling to help in any way and most of the class is failing, which says something about the professor. 25 questions in 60 mins, changes the format of the questions half way thru semester. Even got tutoring but i cant save this grade; a C is 65% and i still cant pass. No HW
Had to drop out of the class. I am someone who has 3.96 GPA and works extremely hard for classes but I just wasnt able to pass a single exam. His PowerPoints are useless and you literally rely on your textbook. So if you dont care about learning everything on your own and don't need anyone to help you, then go for it! But this is my first W ever.
First, orgo 1 is a really difficult class to begin with. I'm not surprised I didn't do as well as in other classes. However, your grade completely relies on the completion of six exams plus the final. There's never any curve, even when the average for each test so far has been failing. Be prepared to completely teach yourself from the textbook.
He was a total of 6 exams, but considering I had to change my studying habits to see if it would work (but it didn't) I expected at least a B. Organic chem is a difficult class but I can't stand when professors expect you to pay $$ to learn by yourself and if you ask him something, he will be extremely rude and my emails were polite and respectful
I heard this guy wasnt great but I can easily say that he wasnt a very helpful teacher. He relies on students to learn the book but on tests, he changes the format that you learned in the book making it much more difficult. He basically just makes the class harder than educational. If you want someone who teaches you, dont take him.
Orgo I is a hard class no matter what, but this prof makes it harder by solely grading based off tests. No homework or EC. His ppts are useless and don't go into nearly as much detail as you're tested on. Changed the testing format halfway through the semester so it was really hard to figure out how to study. Best way to pass is READ THE BOOK!!
One of the worst professors Ive had! Try to get a different orgo 1 teacher by any means. Barely passed and it wasnt just because orgo is a difficult subject. He was rude and couldnt explain anything and slacked off during online Covid classes. One of the worst professors at UCF and definitely the worst chemistry professor!
Spent countless hours studying. Went to every office hours session. Still had to drop even if I knew the textbook from front to back, exams were written incredibly hard. He changed the exam format halfway through the class. He was super condescending, over half the class had already dropped when I dropped. Brutal and terrible for mental health.
You gonna hate chemistry because of this guy.
You can get a 100% on all homeworks but tests are where it gets really hard. He's an absolutely great professor and cares about you learning the material but his curriculum is ridiculous. Class covers three extra chapters than the other classes w/ diff orgo professors. Orgo II is hard enough, and having to be tested on more material adds to that.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE A SLAVE TO IT FOR AN ENTIRE SEMESTER. Homework does not even matter, all exams are pulled from the recommended text book problems. I studied every day, for 8 HOURS, and NEVER passed an exam. HE IS EXTREAMLY RUDE AND AWFUL TO TALK TO. Don't walk, RUN away from this class. Duel enroll somewhere else.
He changes the format of every exam and when students ask for help to do better he refuses to respond. The only exam prep is a very long and confusing review sheet and over practice 100 questions per chapter that don't even relate to his format. Even when the class average was 40%, he didn't curve grades and blames students for "not trying"
Worst Professor I've ever had. He doesn't even help you. Don't take him. He doesn't even like to help his students. 4 test and the final exam. His exams are very hard. His powerpoints are useless.
all of the exam averages were below 50% and he did not curve any of them.
THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. we had 4 exams and a final and ALL of them had an F average (in the 40s and 30s) and he never once curved. i studied for HOURS daily and still could not pass. the final exam was the acs and our class scored in the 34th percentile, which is horrible... yet, he still did not curve. so many people failed. HORRIBLE.
