The class is overly hard for a 200 level class, we have two exams, and four papers, all research based. The class is more like 310. In addition, he isn't clear with instructions and doesn't answer questions thoroughly. I strongly advise everyone not to take a class of his.
Never, never take a class from a new professor. I have learned that now. This guy is awful, check out the "I should have taken soc 210 with Cunningham" club on facebook. Not cool, not helpfull.NOT attractive. This is more like a 300/400 level class.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS! IF YOU WANT TO LIVE IN HELL FOR THE ENTIRE QUARTER YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS CLASS. HE IS A TOTAL ****
Seriously listen people!!! This man will put people in therapy for the rest of their lives. College is not this serious or intended to be this cruel. If you want to take a capstone and writing proficiency in one then this is the man for you. He is very vague, has no compassion to personal issues and "doesn't care who passes or fails his class"
All he does is recite the assigned reading in class. Also, HE WILL QUIZ YOU AFTER THE FIRST ASSIGNED READING. He says he will give quizzes if people aren't reading, but this is untrue. ALWAYS expect a quiz. Also, don't expect any real help. If you ask a question, he'll treat you like you are STUPID.
DON'T EVER TAKE A CLASS FROM SETHY POO. HE TALKS DOWN TO THE CLASS. HE READS US THE BOOK, ITS LIKE STORYTIME. HE DOESN'T TEACH. NOT HELPFUL AT ALL!!! VERY INCONSISTENT IN EXPECTATIONS!
I am VERY dissapointed with this class. This professor is unclear in his expectations. His lectures are boring, he might as well just read straight from the book! Feinberg is clearly not passionate about the subject.
This class is challenging, but not at all the nightmere that some say. Afterall, this is college, and we're supposed to do work, right? I've learned a lot from Seth's class, and I think that he challenges students to do their best. The class is a lot of work, but teaches you a lot about writing a research proposal and the research process too.
It was not so much the professor himself but the fact that his expectations were unclear. This is college, and the class is supposed to be challenging, but I feel that I would have learned more if he had been more clear. I still do not feel like I really understand the research proposal process that well.
I was initially concerned when reading his previous ratings here, but Seth is awesome! The only reason he has received bad reviews is because people don't show up for class and do the reading. Tests are straighforward, and he is great about responding to emails/questions. He takes very boring subject matter and makes it as interesting as possible!
Before taking this class i was really worried because of what i heard. I think the bad ratings from fall quarter were due to the fact that a huge group project was part of the course, and this quarter the class was changed. Seth is willing to change his teaching to adapt to criticism and student needs. He could be more friendly and personable but
Feinberg is really not as bad as everyone says. If you come to class, do the readings and study the notes, the tests are very straightforward and kind of easy. He was always available for help and always answered my emails right away. I thought this was a good class, and Feinberg is a good professor.
OH man, this guy is horrible. he does not have a web site. there is no real text book, and he is unwilling to help you out if you cant make class. there are random quizes and assignments and NO study guide for the test. DO NOT take him as a professor. if i could drop his class i would.
Great material and an eye opening class, but could have been taught better. Seth did a pretty good job, but he really just doesn't care about his students. He makes you feel like a complete idiot if you raise your hand and ask a question. He repeats to come to him for help, but he's not approachable! I think he's just an unhappy person.
This class is super easy if you show up, read the material, and do some studying. There's easy pop quizes if you read the book/come to class. If you do a little reviewing of the material in case of pop quizzes, then you won't have to study at all for the 2 tests (midterm & final). There's a 5 pg paper too. Class is easier than Sept. posts!!!
definitely a hard teacher, but willing to help in anything and tries to keep you motivated
I hope that the recent posts mean that he is learning how to be a people person. he always seemed surprised that no one ever raised their hand to give an opinion when he asked for one, and maybe he found out that it is because he makes you feel like an idiot if you do.would be a better professor to take from in a few years when he has leaned more.
My friend's grandfather died right before the mid-term and the funeral was the day of the mid-term so she asked him if she could make it up. He asked her if there was any way she could get out of the funeral!!! who does that?!? he didnt even let her make it up, her final was worth 50% of her grade. HE IS NOT WILLING TO WORK WITH HIS STUDENTS.
Have had 2 classes from Seth now, he's not that bad. As long as you go to class and do the reading it's pretty straight forward. His mid-terms are directly from the lecture notes and the quizzes from the readings.
I don't know why some people said he was not a good professor, I am taking this class right now and I think he is awesome. You do have to put the effort in though, go to class and read the chapters he assigns which aren't that bad. Class discussions are really interesting and get students involved. I definitely recommend him, he's one of my favorit
Seriously, not at all as bad as anybody before said. Maybe he's taken the criticism and gotten better. The class is pretty easy as long as you show up so you don't miss random assignments and quizzes, and there's no text book. Everything you need to know he gives you in lecture. He jokes around a lot, and he's pretty personable.
Great teacher. There are alot of people who say otherwise but Seth has a very straight forward teaching style. Theres not book for the class and on the first day he tells you how to get an A in the class. Only studyed the day before the test and got an A. There are 4, 4 page papers but it's a soc class, so thats to be expected
As a teacher he's fine, the class isn't hard but he's extremely rude, and pompous and thinks he knows the answers to everything. If you don't mind condescending and self-righteous people I suppose the class itself is tolerable.
He is one of those teachers who gives credit for everything that you do. This means that if you read, come to class, and study (you have to do all three) you will do well. There is a point to everything that we do in that class. It is so interesting and the lectures are engaging, you really do want to come to class everyday.
He is extremely rude and sets his students up to fail his class. In order to pass his class you must read the entire book, attend all classes and magically understand his unclear directions about assignments. Interesting subject, take the class with any other professor.
He is a jerk! Be prepared to come to class everyday. I did well on tests and very well on papers but I ended with a D because he takes A LOT of points off for not being there for the pointless in-class "your opinion" assignments. Good class, not a good guy
Seth really isn't that bad. You do have to go to class, and he expects you to be there, do the reading, etc... but it's college, so I think those are okay expectations. His classes are actually pretty easy as long as you do your work. Take his classes. They're fun.
Class is interesting, but a lot of work is involved to get a good grade. You have to know both books pretty well to get an A on tests. Test questions are sometimes unclear, and there are A LOT of short-answer questions on the midterm (haven't taken final yet.) He can be a bit condescending, but to be fair a lot of the people in my class are idiots.
contrary to what a lot of people say I think seth is a really great teacher. He is very good at letting people give their opinions even when they are ridiculous, and he doesn't seem biased. You can never tell what side he is on, which is a good thing. You do have to be prepared to go to class everyday, READ THE BOOKS and pay attention.
He is not understanding of EXCUSED absences. If he doesnt like you, due to talking in class...being taller than him....or simply just cause he doesnt like you, he will make sure there is a pop quiz if you are gone from class. He has no human compassion.
Seth tries, but he's pretty full of it. I've learned more from the books than from him. I guess I'm just getting tired of hearing the phrase, "and that's what we have to think about if we want to understand deviance." He's the kind of prof that knows cool stuff, but tries to trick you with random pop quizzes and meaningless little assignments.
You MUST attend class. There are pop quizzes all the time, and if you don't have a friend in the class there's no way to know about an assignment. Prof himself is pretty intelligent, seems well-informed, can make class pretty entertaining but won't bend an inch if you're absent for something.
Well to start off, his midterm was THE hardest test I've ever taken. It was TEN PAGES long with 20 paragraph long questions! I had to stay 5 minutes after class and a lot of us still hadn't finished. You HAVE to go to class, and you HAVE to read the books. He's a cool guy but the class was just too hard. I recommend taking it with another professor
Feinberg obviously has gotten a lot better. Just do the readings, come to class, take notes and study (be a student).
AWESOME TEACHER! dry humor..cracks me up. Can't spell to save his life. Though very intelligent. Lectures really draw you in.. loved him.
GREAT PROFESSOR! This was my first soc class and it honestly made me consider a soc major. His lectures are engaging, interesting, relevant to real life and the material is very eye opening. He is funny, clear and tests are always what you expect. He is not flexible with test makeups and such but you don;t want to miss class anyhow.
Best professor I've ever had, hands down. He knows his**** like Takeru Kobayashi knows how to eat hot dogs. He's a good humored guy and his choice of reading material was impeccable. The tests were rough but manageable as long as you aren't a total dolt and you show up and do the assigned reading.
he is a sweet teacher. its a hard class but he makes it fun. this class rocked!!! everyone should take it. hes funny too.
I absolutely loved his "deviant behavior class." He kept the content interesting and fun. Instead of reading a textbook, we read other outside sources pertaining to the topics. It is a class definitely worth taking.
Amazing class, loved each and every aspect of it. I'm bad at motivating myself to go to lectures but I never even considered missing this class. He is hilarious and keeps everything interesting and you can tell he's actually interested too. Even the readings were awesome and I had no problem keeping up or wanting to read.
Too many readings for not that important of a class. Uninformed, uninteresting teacher. Relies too much on the books.
This was my favorite class to take in my 3 years here at WWU so far. I took Deviant Behavior and HATED him but I take all that back now. The books were fun to read, the content of the course was interesting, and the field trip to the detention center was informative. I want to work in a prison because of him!
Seth is one of my favorite professors at western, and i'm a psychology student. His 387 was amazing. He is open to all opinions and gave us a ton of information. The information was well supported and extremely interesting. I loved both 387 and 251!
People give Seth a bad rapp because he expects students to show up to class and to read the material. I don't see why this is a problem. Seth also uses novels instead of textbooks to teach his courses, which I see as engaging, not threatening. I would highly recomend taking his courses if you enjoy engaged learning instead of meaningless lectures.
Worst [assistant] prof at WWU, out of at least 30 I've had. He's dismissive towards many student comments; he rarely has anything to add. His humor is sparse and predictable. He cannot comprehend implication. He talks slowly, carefully, and covers VERY little material. He drills in certain concepts repeatedly (IE: deviancy=social construct).
He's very slow talking and doesn't cover very much material. He demands attendance at class - there are pop quizzes randomly and constantly, oftentimes at the end or beginning of the period. He is somewhat rude when answering questions, but overall he's okay.
He doesn't cover a lot of material, but he makes sure the class understand the material he does cover! He's somewhat rude answering questions in class, but most people don't seem to mind. Overall he teaches well enough, but not a great personality.
I really enjoy this class- although he gives many pop quizzes and in-class assignments while his lectures are usually repetitive. He doesn't always answer people's questions head-on, and at times can seem a little condescending. The subject matter is interesting but his contribution to it is limited.
I recommend this class. Professor Feinberg speaks to the reality of America's snake oil war on drugs. No textbooks! Feinberg mandates that students come to class, or suffer the consequences, and is somewhat contradictory at times, but he makes very important points and is sometimes really funny.
I really enjoyed this class & would recommend it. No text books but a lot of reading from INTERESTING novels. Come to class because he does give pop quizes on reading/video assignments. I found lectures interesting, but be sure to take good notes, because he doesn't use blackboard or give a study guide!
This class was really interesting. Feinberg doesn't use blackboard which makes this class a pain if you're not used to attending classes 100% of the time. He also doesn't put the movies we watch in class on course reserve. He's crystal clear about what's expected on tests though and does a good job preparing students for them. No textbooks.
Great combo between a really interesting class and a great teacher. The tests are very fair- coming to class is essential, but the material is so interesting you WANT to come to class. I highly recommend this class and this teacher. Feinberg's dry sense of humor makes it even more entertaining.
His lectures can be repetitive. He doesn't answer student questions very well. Attendance isn't mandatory, per se, but pop reading quizzes make it pretty required. He has a good sense of humor, and the books are good. Overall, I was very interested in this topic going in, but I think he made it a lot less interesting than it could have been.
Didn't need a book for class! While attendance isn't mandatory, you really should go every day to hear the random homework assignments. Doesn't use blackboard, which can be a nuisance. Overall really good prof though.
This class was a complete waste of time. The material covered was super easy, people would have to be completely stupid to learn anything in this class. There aren't any textbooks and it's beyond easy if you're looking for an easy A (just attend class and do the assignments)
Research Methods is not the most interesting thing ever, but most of the videos we watched were bearable, and we didn't have to do any textbook reading! You really should go to class as much as possible, as he give random little homework assignments.
This dude is not cool at all...He has a terrible teaching stayle which matches his poor attitude. I really wish I would have consulted Rate my Prof before taking his course. He is not interesting and favors certain people in his classes (attractive females). STAY AWAY....for your sake and GPA!!
I understand this course is not the most interesting but come on!! Doesn't use Blackboard, is really rude in class and in his office, seems a bit too "full of himself" (even at about 5' 6"), and covers material way too slowly, reqires* attendance by "pop quizzes"...like in 8th grade, but mainly he just doesn't make a fun subject (soc) fun.
Man, have to agree with everybody here. I thought I had read good reviews on him, but I would not recommend him. He honestly seems like he does not want to be there. Terrible subject though. Quite boring. Take the class only if you need to. He's not toooo helpful with assignments, but he'll still give you pointers. Just go to class. Dont slack off.
Seth's personality isn't the strongest, but his teaching methods are fantastic. He uses a variety of media (novels, videos, articles, lecture, etc.) to get his point across, rather than just lecturing. This class is a breeze if you come to class, take notes, and do the reading. Easy enough people.
Easy class but torture to sit through. If you can get through the first half of class then the second have is pretty cool. The point of this class is to make you feel bad about stuff you can't control( your race, where your born, and the blood on all of our hands)..... Very cliche and irritating
Any person who says this class is only there to make you feel bad about "uncontrollable things" clearly did not take from the class what the goal was to take. Great class, great professor. Very intelligent guy. Choice in novels could be better, but not so bad. Go to class and take detailed notes, not many powerpoints.
To me, the subject matter was really interesting. The reading was difficult to get through, though. If you go to class, take notes, and pay attention you should be fine, but sometimes I thought he added things on the test that weren't always totally clear in his lectures. Alsol, really pay attention to the videos he shows.
When this class started I wasn't thrilled about the lack of study guides for tests. We had lectures and books to read and not a whole lot of overlap between the two. I really had to pin point what main points were but after the first test I learned that it was really helping me and did not mind as much. You really need to attend class to do well.
Feinberg is a really great prof. Knows his stuff. Go to class, take notes, and pay attention and you will do just fine.
Take my word and DON'T take SOC 251 with him. He's incredibly sarcastic and just a very negative person. I went into his office to talk about my exam and I just felt very uncomfortable in his presence. He's an awkward teacher/person in general. It's hard to follow his teaching style, he jumps from place to place. Tests are hard to study for as well
Terrible teacher and person in general. His tests are incredibly hard to study for. He rambles a lot so I don't know what to actually write down in class. Every morning I hear his voice, I know that it's already going to be a bad day. He's also really sarcastic.
I really was not sure what most of the material had to do with the overall discription of the course. Really only the books that we read connected with deviant behavior. He was also a very biased teacher, and very uncomfortable to listen to.
Feinberg is an interesting dude. He isn't clear with what is on the tests, but if you read the books(there is no txtbook) and go to class you will do well. Not to mention the books are extremely interesting, but long. I would definitely recommend this class, but you MUST go to class
Attendance is pretty much mandatory since there are in class points and blackboard isnt used. To be honest, I liked him a lot more than others did on here. He's not the greatest professor but certainly not the worst. He's a nice guy, I didn't find him rude or condenscending. He uses different forms of teaching from videos to lecture to surveys.
I also took him for Deviant Behavior. Attendance is mandatory, because there are random quizzes, but it helps you keep up with the reading. He CAN be unclear, but he really wants you to ask questions if you're confused about anything. I emailed him from time to time, and it really clarified things. Just do the reading and show up. Also, he's hot.
The content of this class was amazing & you can tell he is passionate. There is a lot of reading but all of the books were interesting, just make sure to stay on top of it, there are quizzes. One research paper, no exams. His lectures were a mix of slides and videos. He taught me how to write better academic papers and I really enjoyed this class.
It is important that you understand that the reading and the lectures play off each other. He will occasionally read a passage from the book and talk about it, but he expects you to use both sources of information in your final paper.
This professor uses a lot of shock pedagogy: he shows pictures of lynchings, maimings, and slavery; videos of genocide and murder. One of the black students in the class asked if he could give a trigger warning before showing such media. He said he "would try." Besides this traumatic media, he knows what he's talking about, he's just a problematic.
Honestly this is guy is the worst teacher on the wwu campus, with no rubrics and very very vague information seth does not want to help his student excel. I hated this class and didn't learn anything
Seth is super knowledgeable in his field and his research methods class is really chill, but he doesn't use Canvas, so do what you want with that information.
I took his class on Sociology and deviant behaviors. Literaly the most interesting, relevant, and knowlage opening class I have ever taken. Dont care who you are or what your studying because this class is so good you will never miss a lecture. He is a great teacher and person and this is no ordinary Sociology class its better in every way.
this professor is horrible. please dont take him if you can help it. he grades pretty much strictly on exams. theres no actual assignments, no textbook, no study guides. this class was supposed to be about deviance, but he pretty much just talked about cocaine the entire time. it didnt make any sense and the expectations were so unclear.
tests were really hard in this class. he was a good teacher but he didnt really answer questions
By far the best teacher I have encountered at Western so far. Seth was very engaging during his lectures and clearly cared a lot about these topics. He always presented information in an interesting way that differed greatly from the usual methods of slide shows and notes. I definitely recommend taking his class.
251 is by far the best class Ive taken here because Seth truly cares about what hes teaching and gives very engaging lectures. Rather than droning on for the whole hour and having us take notes, he would show us videos and other things that actually helped us to understand what he was talking about. Great professor and I 100% recommend his class.
ASYNC 251 was super straight-forward: watch the lecture, watch documentaries, read the book, take quizzes on all of them. There are a few random papers you have to write that are no more than 2 pages that are basically a check for your understanding. The assigned book Cocaine is super interesting but can get dry. Easy class if you put in the work!
Gives unhelpful feedback, doesn't elaborate on his criticisms, really looking for the most during a global pandemic...
Im seeing a lot of bad reviews for Seth feinberg but I am taking his soc 366 class. He is extremely knowledgeable. I appreciated this class a lot and can not think of one bad thing about the professor. He graded quickly and is always available to answer questions.
Extremely unorganized Canvas page and unhelpful grading/feedback. Lots of reading and quizzes on way too many pages to remember the information. Unhelpful overall and I definitely want to drop this class.
Course load is really demanding, reading heavy and writing heavy (strict guidelines to writing too). Things would be mentioned for 0.5 seconds in vids and then you are to write 2 LENGTHY paragraphs to get full points. I don't have time to watch 4+ hours of documentaries and lecture recordings, all while taking notes, and reading 100+ pages.
Workload is insane for a class during a pandemic. He expects you to watch anywhere from 5-8 videos a week, each about an HOUR long, in addition to reading 100+ pages. Uses videos he found online to teach the class for him, expects you to write a novel for every question. Told the class that he is unsympathetic towards personal circumstances. Awful
All we did was write weekly responses about the readings and videos. They were tedious assignments that didn't further my understanding. Seth relied completely on the documentaries and readings to "teach us." He didn't synthesize or present the information in an interesting/unique way. It's an easy A, but a waste of time.
Weekly, we watched 6-7 hours of videos, read 100ish pages, and answered 10-12 questions, 2 paragraphs each. Easy, but paying tuition to watch hours of videos I could have found myself was a bummer. The workload was ridiculous, especially since he clearly didn't put effort in. He recorded one useless lecture per week and let the .videos do the rest.
I really did not enjoy Seth as a professor. Maybe he would've been better in person, but it sucks to pay thousands of $ to watch hours of history channel documentaries each week that I could've watched on my own on youtube. He included one lecture each week that was not pertinent to the questions he asked. An easy A, but not worth my time at all
I wouldnt recommend this class to anyone. Seth had us watch multiple hours of documentaries each week, read over 150 pages, and answer at least 10 questions in full length paragraphs. I wish there was less work per week so I could do more than just skim the readings. This class is also 95% political science. Not one bit of sociology applied here.
I'm not trying to be dramatic but just don't take his class. I have taken gender or racial studies classes every quarter I have a free credit and have always loved it. Very interesting content but Seth crushed any enjoyment I tried to gain from it, every other ethnic studies prof has been great.
The worst professor I have had at Western. Gave very little feedback, and seemed to not care.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE DETERMINED TO GET A 4.0; he is extremely stingy with grades and many small assignments are weighted heavily. He also facetiously words quiz questions to trick you, so read EVERYTHING carefully and think critically. Attendance isn't graded but he will not post notes from class lecture online for any reason.
He teaches a lot of good stuff but there are a lot of lectures and readings and he does in-class questions so attendance is encouraged. He also talks really slowly.
When he talks about police it comes off as being a boot licker. Doesn't call on people of color a lot of the times. He said to the class that we weren't alive in 1960 when many African countries gained independence and in actuality, my dad is an African immigrant and felt impacts of colonialism so it felt very invalidating coming from a white man.
Love/hate relationship. Pros: Profound material; Seth is incredibly knowledgeable; great lectures; intuitive and straightforward assignments. Cons: missing class/reading quizzes drops grades; rarely allows make-up or excused absence; lots of reading (it is good material though); Seth isn't personable unless you make effort to build rapport.
Took 366 from a friends suggestion, and she warned me, but urged learning this material is worth while. She was right. With that said, reading load is egregious. Seth is also very sassy which is as much respectable as it is intimidating. Attendance is too much of the grade which is lame if you want to sleep thru the 8am. He is a soft grader though.
Seth is an awesome professor. I can't relate to those who didn't enjoy him and the class. He's quite funny and very knowledgeable. I can recognize how he may come across as sassy, however, he's just blunt and tells it as it is. I loved his class and thought the readings were not hard to comprehend. The lectures were intriguing and informational
Seth is passionate about what he teaches, but the lectures are disorganized. You will get an A if you pay attention, show up, and form somewhat critical thoughts. Most engaging required reading. You get 5 participation points for every lecture, so show up! The heavily weighted assignments are easy, too, even though his rubrics are vague.
TLDR: Avoid at ALL costs. Didn't know I was signing up for a grad level history course. ZERO ties to sociology - all teaching done through HOURS of videos that are not his. Lectures played in 2X sound normal. 10+ hours of videos for one question that needs paragraphs of responses - and don't worry, the answer is in the middle of the video too!
Very interesting class. I learned a great deal. I will note that this class has a HEAVY workload. Not for the faint of heart.
Seth can be very blunt and intimidating but that doesn't change the fact that his classes are worth taking. They are VERY intense content wise. Make sure to do every assignment and turn them in on time because every assignment is heavily weighted. Soc 366 is one of the most influential classes that I have taken at Western.
Soc 366 is a challenging but rewarding course. The professor can be blunt, but his lectures are informative. The heavy workload requires commitment, but using resources like Unstuck AI can make studying more efficient. Overall, the material is worthwhile.
Boring curriculum. No textbook or homework but only because attendance is mandatory. Unclear grading criteria, was very inconsistent and knock off points for the smallest things. I was always falling asleep in class from boredom, but overall it was pretty easy. As long as you show up, take notes, and listen to his tangents, you'll pass.
One of my favorite classes I've taken so far. However, Seth is extremely harsh with grading, attendance, workload. He said if you can't keep up, to not even bother making an excuse and just drop the class. There's hour long videos that you have to watch outside of class and answer questions that can be extremely tedious to find within the video.
Although Seth's class was very difficult, it was also impactful. I have learned so much from his course and it has changed me for the better. If you are up for it, you will not regret taking his class. It is one of the few I will remember for a lifetime.
