I really liked this class...it was a lot of work and I learned a lot. Dr. Katz is a fair grader and very interesting to listen to.
The course is typical for CIV. However, watch out because this man cannot seperate personal (as advisor to campus community) and professional relationships. Many students have had problems with confidentaility.
Took a while to grade exams and give them back. Class was not bad.
awesome teacher, very funny and easy to pay attention to, tests are kind of hard and very involved though, so make sure to study!!

he is a very good teacher, and very interesting. I learned a lot from him, but only because he teaches in a way that is easy to learn from. Study for his tests because he is fair, you get what you earn.
This guy's a lot of fun. I mean, come on, he's the only guy here teaching a science fiction class. K4tz |5 t3h 1337.
Katz is a great teacher, especially when paired with Dr. Prescott for CIV 101. I'm telling everyone who needs to take a CIV to take them cause you seriously will hate missing the lecture.
WORST TEACHER I have ever had! The class is horible and make sure you take it at a community college or take it with another professor. Dont ever take a class with Katz.
This dude is the dude. I actually learn things from him, which is refreshing. Likes his pinball.
this class thought me how to write a proper research paper. Katz an excellent professor.
This class was the hardest ENG 101 class ever...do not take it. our class did 3 times as many papers as others, an 8 week service project was required, meetin w/ a study group for 1.5 every week - and its mainly philosphy not based on your writing skills.
Very tough class, at least 3 times as much writing then other ENG 101 classes. Easy to get along with, is willing to help. Funny, at times. Overall nice guy.
Hardest class--Don't take it! Half the people in our the class dropped it b/c it's so horrible.
I HATE THIS TEACHER SOOO MUCH~ HE MADE US DO TOO MANY THINGS FOR BEING INCOMING FRESHMAN>WE DO HAVE ABOUT 5 OTHER CLASSES BESIDES YOURS THAT WE TAKE>>>SLOW DOWN...no need to take up ALL our time
If you want to learn, take Katz for sure, he's a great teacher, if you just want to get through a blow off class, don't take Katz, you'll wanna die.
Katz pissed me off nearly every day, but I learned soooo much. I HIGHLY recommend this class if you're serious about improving your research and writing skills. But you have to be willing to work hard and take a lot of crap...
I think he is a wonderful teacher. There is a lot of reading assignments but he is very fair and he gives you the test in advance and lets you come up with your outline for your essay and use it during class. HE IS GREAT AND VERY FUNNY!!!
I have had the opportunity to have Katz three times since I have been at Bradley. His classes aren't easy, but I enjoyed what I learned in them. He makes you think, and the discussions make you step out of your comfort zone in some topics.
Never disliked an English class more in my entire life. He requires a ton of work. He's very full of himself and when he encourages you to think, it's his thinking he wants to hear, not yours. Avoid him if you can.
You read and then have discussions everyday. If you don't like talking aboout religion, don't take him. Very opinionated and tells you that you are wrong about things. He was okay, but seems to like to hear himself talk above anything else.
he is really arrogant and good at all.he thinks he is a hero but i think he is a zero.
Dr. Katz really cares about what he does, but he thinks we think on the same level as him and we don't. This class was a lot of work. If you want to learn, then take him. He is VERY opionionated though.
tough but fair. actually cares about the students and that you learn, unlike most college professors.
Awesome teacher.Really cares about u.A lot of reading but if u go to class and take notes on the pages discussed and u'll pass the tests.Write journals about anything u can think of and make sure to follow instructions on essay tests and u'll get an A.
Dr. Katz is very thorough, dedicated, and fun. I learned a LOT in his three week course, and it was painless because he was open to questions! A+ for him.
Great teacher. You have to go to class, but you don't have to do all the reading, just pay attention. Tests are essays, but you know the question ahead of time.
Avoid this teacher. He has a huge ego and doesn't respect students opinions. I think he thinks he knows everything. Clueless.
Dr. Katz is an awesome professor! He gives you all the information you need for "exams", they're all essays. It's a lot of reading, but if you go to class and keep up with the journals (write one about everything you read) it's a fun class and you can get an A. :)
katz is a nice guy, grammar is a sucky and ridiculously hard subject. However, no matter how much I loathe grammar I enjoy being in his class. By the way, if you take grammar even though you don't have to YOU ARE INSANE!!!
A very amusing teacher. He is very passionate about what he does. Study hard. The exams are easy if you are prepared. He gives you a list of terms and you have to say what they are and why they are important. He and Prescott are insane but funny.
OK. This guy was uber tough on grading, but his personality was worth it. One of the funniest guys on campus, with a pretty good sense of humor.
One of the worst teachers I have had at Bradley, he is so egotistical it makes you want to throw up during class...He will make you wish you were never born becuase he is good at tearing his students down, Congrats Katz on being one of the worst professors at Bradley! IF YOU CAN GET OUT, DROP THE CLASS NOW OR NEVER SIGN UP WITH THIS HORRIBLE MAN!
Dr. Katz is the nicest man alive! the person who didn't like him must have been an idiot...take his class and get to know him! he's great!!
Don't listen to the "rage" comment. Katz is the best professor I've come across at Bradley. He's funny and laid back (but not in a bad way). He really cares about his students and the class and it shows. The class isn't a cake walk, but if you work hard and care, you will do fine. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR... you won't regret it!
Dr. Katz is very funny and a self proclaimed dork. He tells great stories and does funny impressions. The class is always interesting and fun to attend. He's very cool about accepting assignments late. However, it takes a long time to get assignments back.
Loves grammar almost as much as I do!
I only took this class to fulfill a Gen Ed. but Dr. Katz is really nice. He loves what he does and actually knows what he's talking about. It also helps that I had him as an advisor but he's definitely a good professor.
I have a hard time deciding whether Dr. Katz is a cool charmer or a manipulative ****. Exams are extremely vague and grading is extremely subjective. Exams are so long that few will finish them with a good grade in the time provided. Studying and knowing the material will not equate to a good grade in Katz's class. Too demanding for a 101 gen-ed
He's cool, if you like crying. I studied hard for a test and failed it, we've all been there. But I learned that he didn't like me when he decided to tell the entire class that I had received an F on the test and said "Maybe you should all learn from her and study hard." Thanx alot ****er, learn to teach.
He is a very interesting and humorous teacher. There isn't much homework besides the reading of the short stories. However his grading is very oppionated..so this can either be a good thing or a bad thing. But all in all a very good class.

I hated this class. Dr. Katz may be entertaining, but he grades like a jerk and has a real ego issue. I'm an A student, but I could barely keep up with all the busywork. He grades very biased and inconsistently. Other sections of this class don't do even close to this amount of work. Dr. Katz is a smart guy, but I would avoid him as a teacher.
Very entertaining prof. Often gets sidetracked, which keeps the class entertaining but when you have assignments you don't understand it can be frustrating. You should enjoy being in class with him.
Don't listen to horror stories about this class. Yes-it's tough-but Katz is extremely helpful, both in and out of class, and makes a boring topic interesting by singing, dancing, and talking in funny voices. ALWAYS willing to go over stuff with you and he is extrmeley down-to-earth.
Katz grades hard. Its not that he is unfair or mean, he just challenges you. Hes lectures are good, and he makes you want to come to class, but its really hard to get an A, unless you psychology figure him out and what he wants from you. Ask him what he is looking for ahead of time. He is also kind of sexy in his own Jewish way!
While he generally keeps the class friendly, he is personally attached to the text (which he wrote and hasn't been able to publish yet)...and if you respond negatively to his class or book then he will personally attack you.
While his classes are not mandatory, you have to go if you want to do well. tests are way easier than the ridiculous cumulative final. very helpful, really cares...but dont count on an easy A or B for that matter. DO YOUR HOMEWORK...it gets you on his good side.
Avoid him. Dictator-like. Had to do my senior project with him a couple of years back....he kept changing my focus --- without telling me! Likes only his own ideas. Seemed insulted that I didn't think his ideas were brilliant. No real help when it came to writing or structuring the paper.
Dr.Katz does not hold back in any of his classes. He makes sure to alienate students he doesn't "like" and torment them. He also thinks it appropriate to share your grade with the entire class. I wish he would learn some professionalism.
Dr.Katz is really difficult to figure out. It took me almost half the semester to learn what he wanted in the response papers. As far as tests go, they are all short answer and essay questions. Once you know what he wants it gets easier, but that's hard to find. He challenges his classes, but is still pretty fair. Show up to class and read chapters
Took him for SciFi and Fantasy, as well as 2 independent studies. Loved him but he makes you think and work very hard. No sliding by. Can be opinionated, but he wants you to actually think for yourself, too. He's very willing to help out with your work, and a great listener. Also very hilarious and entertaining as a teacher.Overall, I love him
Admits half the stuff he teaches was made up by himself- which, even if I agree with some of it, it wont help me as a teacher myself because I doubt my school will care about his ideas more than traditional ones. Has an annoying superior attitude. Refuses to miss class (held class at his house when his kid was sick). Does his best to help though.
He is a very nice guy that tries to keep the class cheerful and easy-going. He knows that Grammar sucks but he tries to make it suck as little as possible. HW can be tedious but he gives out practice tests that help ALOT. And he lets you bring a notecard to tests with as much info as you can fit on both sides. Try your best and you should be fine.
He grades tough but it's not that he's mean, he's just trying to challenge you. he honestly wants you to learn something for the money you're spending. very very interesting discussion/ lecture. he makes me want to pay attention. he's very unconventional sometimes but i like him.
Dr. Katz is one of the best professors at Bradley. He is very challenging and requires a lot of work, but it is worth it. He is very helpful and understanding and really wants all of his students to learn something valuable and succeed.
He will definitely call you out if he thinks something is wrong with your paper. It's not that he's trying to be mean, he's just trying to challenge you. But it is a little intimidating. He's a nice guy though, and he's willing to help with papers. He tries to keep class interesting. I've heard he's a tough grader but I did okay on my papers.
His opinions are all that really matter. He relies heavily on the textbooks. He does seem to know a lot of information, but he often believes he's the only one with any real insight. He mocked multiple people during class and made some cry. The material is nice if you can stand to be in the same room as him.
HE IS THE BEST! HE IS SO GREAT! I HOPE I HAVE HIM FOR A CLASS AT SOME POINT!
Dr. Katz is literally one of the best teachers at Bradley. He is a tough teacher in that he pushes you to work; however, he is very helpful and understanding. My writing improved exponentially from taking his class. I now try to take any class that he teaches because I know that regardless of the class, it will be awesome.
Terrible. His way or the highway. Rudest professor I've had at Bradley.
He is helpful and you just have to show that you care. He makes you think further and if you pay attention you will get an A!
Had Katz for a Grad class a few years ago. He was rude, gossipy and self-important. He plays favorites so good luck you are not a "chosen one."
I probably would not take Dr. Katz again. He is okay but he definitely picks favorite students in the class and I was not one of them. His lectures are interesting if you are into English and language. He can come of slightly arrogant. Attendance is mandatory just because of the pop quizzes.
Dr. Katz makes you think. He is a tough grader and really tries to pull your best out of you. I had him for 2 grad school courses and both courses relied heavily on lecture, but the lecture was lead by the students. He gave all students the opportunity to share their information, opinions, and writing.
Dr. Katz was an amazing professor. All of these things about favoritism is unbelievable. He did NOT show any sort of thing in the class I took. In the CIV class I was in, he and Dr. Prescott did "Coffee Talk" where we would sit all class and have discussions on papers we wrote. Those 2 are HILARIOUS together. Be ready to study HARD though!
Fantastic teacher. excellent feedback and GENUINELY cares about his students. He even came to one of my ultimate frisbee tournaments to support me. He is hilarious and super fun
It is clear that Dr. Katz is incredibly intelligent and wants his students to become better writers. However, regardless of intelligence, he is under the delusion that his upper-middle class/white/male-centric view of the world is objective reality, which it is not. He flashes his "PC" card at women&minorities when it's convenient for him. Beware.
By far best professor I have ever had. I have put in additional seminar hours simply so that I would get to see him multiple times a week. He is ridiculously intelligent. He genuinely cares about us- he even attended one of my tournaments just to be supportive.
He's aight
Dr. Katz is an amazing professor who cares a lot about his students. He's someone you could always go to if something was ever wrong and he shows that he truly does care. He can be tough on you, but that's because he believes you could do better.
Dr. Katz is great. He's fun to talk to and makes himself available to give feedback or answer any questions you have.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Discussions are interesting and he challenges you to think outside of your predefined biases. A fair bit of reading, but I found most of the readings on interesting topics. Lastly, he gives great feedback on papers and is always willing to meet with students for any reason. You will have to show up to class
He is not a good teacher. He is very smart but not good at teaching and applying the things he knows.
Most amazing professor/teacher I have ever had. He challenges you to think outside of the box 24/7 and guides you along the way. He is a fun, kindhearted, and intelligent man who truly cares about his students. I was constantly learning in his class. If you have the opportunity to take an LAS class with him, DO IT!
Although I took it online, I could tell that he was a great professor. He cares about his students and if you come in late, he will ask if everything is alright. I learned a lot from him and would recommend him.
Dr. Katz's classes usually have a lot of reading but it's mostly only for discussion which students take turns leading. There were a couple of one question pop quizzes, and an essay at the midterm and final. Take a class with him if you can! Super fun, caring, and engaging class.
Dr. Katz is very engaging and has a great teaching style to get people involved. Super interesting class and readings. Expect some focus on education issues, as it's a required class for future teachers but everyone should take it!
Dr. Katz provided no real feedback, and instead belittled everything I submitted. He left paragraphs insulting me and my work but provided little to no details about what was actually wrong with my work. I would only take this course if I was held at gun point.
During class, he seems like a nice guy and faculty seems to love him; however, when he commented he was much ruder. Many of the comments he left on my papers were irrelevant to my growth in writing and instead were just comments on my life and insults. I'm okay with constructive criticism but I got 100% on papers and still was subject to his wrath.
Prof is very chill, and laidback with very engaging classes, and wanted us to think outside of the boxes! made us write response papers every week, but were very easy and fun to submit! totally worth it!
You can get a LOT out of this class if you pay attention, do the readings, and do the papers. Just be who you are, be honest about your experiences, and think about things. That's all he wants from you -- think about who you are and who you are here at college. We talked about some interesting things in this course.
I took ENG 302 with Dr Katz in London. I highly recommend doing the study abroad program and taking this particular class with him, if offered. You will have to write a decent amount, but it's not overwhelming and your writing will improve. He cares a lot about his students and will get to know everybody. He is also fun to go on excursions with.
Says he is interested and encourages students to speak up and share opinions, then will argue with you about your own experiences. Lots of reading outside of class though the reflections papers are easy.
Dr. Katz wants you to grow as a student. He does not care what your beliefs are. He simply wants you to articulate them with clear development in your writing and arguments over time. He's willing to go through examples if you seek him out. He is by far one of the best office hour conversations you'll ever have.
