Seth Kraner is a mean teacher. Biology 111 is an entry level class and should not be hard, but he makes it hard. He is arrogant and very unhelpful. When he talks he spits on you.
I agree with the first assesment. Mr. Kraner is rude. If you ask him a question he will answer you like you are an idiot. He is an A$$.
I think the teacher did a very good job of explaining everything. He made it more simple than trying to decipher the book. I did not think of him as rude or condescending, it may have just been people misunderstanding his personality. You can tell he has a great passion for the subject. He was always willing to help anyone that needed it.
I HATED this teacher. he takes what you are supposed to know and makes it harder. he Teaches like we are all biology majors and assumes we all under stand it perfectly. He hands out "notes" which consists of pages typed sentences no bullet points or summaries. Before tests he WILL NOT HELP YOU...he wont slim down any information. HORRIBLE
I am 4.0 honor student and had trouble with this class. He makes things seem harder than they are. Not good at explaining things. I was so close to droping this class but finally pulled off a average grade. Doesnt narrow down any information for the tests. Would not reccoment taking him.very hard. And this is supposed to be a intro class. yea right
Guys he's actually a really good teacher. It's a lot of information that has to be covered in the class so cut him some slack. He is really helpful and extremely nice if you just ask and get together with him outside of class. I got an A in the class by going to every lecture and paying attention and doing the packets and labs and I barely studied.
Mr. Kraner gave me a great base to prepare me for much harder classes. He went to a lot of trouble to do smaller exams rather than hitting you with a huge one long after you studied the material. No, he's not especially dynamic, but I'm there to learn, not be entertained.
He is not that hard of a teacher. If you attend class and pay attention it is a simple class. If you don't understand something then ask and he will explain it to you. I passed this class with little to no studing.
Prof. Kraner is very knowledgable about his field, and it shows in his insightful lectures. Yeah, I know biology isn't the most fun subject on the planet, but he helped me get through it with minimal pain, and I feel much more confident with science now. Thanks, Prof!
He was very fair and helpful. He stayed after class to go over concepts and came in on his days off for review sessions. He provided your notes and tested from them.
Avoid taking a class with this teacher unless you aren't bothered by his complete lack of interest in his students, his arrogence, his impatience with questions, and his prefered method of teaching straight from his instructor's notes at warp speed. I do not believe that this man is fit to teach.
He is a very good teacher and will help you as much possible during his office hours and tutoring time if you need extra help. But he is very hard and strict about how he grade the exam.If you are not serious about studying, please do not take him.If you come prepare and study very very good on the review you will do well on the exam.
He was the worst teacher I ever had. My GPA never dropped below 3.5, and I've been through much difficult biology classes, but taking BIO 174 with him was just horrible, and it screwed my GPA. He claimed that he won't teach that class again because he was very bad at teaching it and I totally don't blame him.
Avoid taking this class with him! I don't know how he is doing with other Bio classes, but taking this class with him was a very bad idea. He had no interest in the material he teaches, and was very mean sometimes!
He wasn't a very good teacher. He signs you in and out of labs, and hovers over you while your doing labs. His tests are hard! Don't take his class.
I don't know whats wrong with people on here, if you go to class and pay attention, you will easily pass his class! He goes over anything that you ask!
I have no idea why people are so hard on this guy he is a really good prof! If you are lazy and dont study of course your going to get bad grades but his exams are almost straight from the homework and quizzes, very helpful if you ask, he is a very nice guy as long as you are respectful! I enjoyed him and he will prepare you will for 103!!
Not the best professor but is always willing to help. His lectures do get a bit dry but as long as you are respectful and go about your business he's a great professor.
Kraner is an arrogant teacher that forgets that he teaches an entry-level class at a community college. The majority of the students there are taking it only because we have to. I wasn't expecting an easy A, but the way he grades in really unfair. Just looked at Blackboard, and the class avg is failing. He's ridiculously unfair and rude to us.
I don't know why people are being calling him arrogant! Just because he knows what he's talking about doesn't make him arrogant. He's nice and teaches pretty well but sadly when you don't show up...YOUR GRADES GOES DOWN! He basically gives us answers in class and his test are the homework. Do the work and maybe your GPA's won't go down!
Helpful prof. Anyone on here who is complaining because of their bad grade simply didn't go to class. Obviously they're going to have trouble. Teacher gives ample opportunity for points, with "second chance" quizzes that count as extra credit, and two critical reviews of a biological article. JUST GO TO CLASS and you'll be fine.
Prof was challenging at first but once I realized tests were straight from notes, class became much easier. Just do labs on time, goto class and study the chapter reviews and you will get an A.
He talks in circles and loves to repeat himself. I usually have no problem staying awake in class, but he put me to sleep almost every day. He doesn't explain things in a clear way unless you sit down with him during office hours. He is really picky and dosen't slack on rules. Just fallow the reviews and attend every lab and you'll be fine
The class started easy then got harder but he was helpful if we got stuck. He bases his exams off of his reviews so do them and ask questions if stuck. He is only strict on attendance for labs and for the first few weeks of lecture. He is really strict when it comes to the rules of the lab so follow them. He is really nice and approachable. ^_^
I did not care for him as a teacher he was very unclear unless you had one on one time. I have a life outside of school and did not always have time for that. Not a lot of work but very time consuming.
Professorr Kraner is exceptionally bright. There was a tremendous amount of info he had to relay for a 10 week course..I would suggest if it has been a while since you have taken biology, take a intermediate class first. Also he is very intense so be on time..no wiggle room. He should hv left the papers out..already way too much material..no extra!
Mr. Kraner is VERY intelligent and presented the subject in a very clear manner. He will go out of his way to help you if you don't understand something. He is VERY precise and gives you notes ahead of time and is very clear about what is on his exams. I highly recommend him. He is an excellent teacher.
He expects a lot out of students.started easy then got harder but he was helpful if we got stuck. He did not give no reviews although gave examples if asked. He is very strict on grades.(He took of a point because i used the word dissolve instead of soluble.) He is really nice and approachable though.
He was helpful if we got stuck. He did not give no reviews although gave examples if asked. He is very strict on grades.(He took of a point because i used the word dissolve instead of soluble.) He is really nice and approachable though.
HE WAS GREAT, FOR A PERSON WHO NEVER HAD A SCIENCE CLASS PAST THE FIRST SEMESTER FRESHMAN YEAR HIGH SCHOOL, I MAINTAINED a 'B' ALL THE WAY THRU UNTIL THE FINAL WHEN I RECEIVED a 'C', he's great! I WOULD TAKE HIM, HIS REVIEWS HELPED GET ME THRU EXAMS, AND I'M TAKING HIM NOW FOR BIO 1111 AFTER FAILING PETER PAPPAS HARDCORE DESIGNED 2 FAIL YOU CLASS
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. He does not make the class easy AT all. He never uses the book and goes straight off of power points, which never follows along with the notes he gives you. He can never stay on topic, he will talk about the next chapter while on a current chapter and then say we will talk about that later and never does. :(
he is not a easy teacher at all,hes gives to much information,he gives two exams and a comprehensive final, that sucks!!!!
He gives two exams and a comprehensive final. The exams are based off the reviews so study them. He goes over the reviews with you in class before you turn them in. He is nice and approachable, and will help you as much as possible during office hours and tutoring time if you need it.
Great professor. I would take another class with him
A little disorganized. Very tough grader. If you don't word a question the way he wants you to, he will take off points regardless if it's actually correct or not. Goes into too much detail & goes off on tangents in lecture. Takes the lab way too seriously. He does give good review sheets for exams but posts them only a couple days before the exam
He's a decent professor, but he grades labs very harshly. There are two midterms, they weren't too hard. Just get the notes and that's all you really need.
Mr. Kraner is very nice and always willing to help and meet with his students but his tests are extremely hard. Keep in mind I'm terrible at science but I received a C only because I did well on the labs but almost every test I received an F. His study guides are horrible and doesn't do very well preparing you for the tests. They are impossible.
Lectures really heavy. All that was really done during the lecture period was him reading off of a powerpoint. He didn't provide the notes for you. Also had chapter reviews that didn't completely correspond with the notes. Unorganized and rude at times and if you didn't word the answer to the question how he wants it, points would be taken off.
Professor Kraner is very passionate about what he does and the topic of biology. He wasn't very clear on his directions regarding certain assignments. His exams were very tough and sometimes included things we had yet to get to in class. He stresses detail on his exams as well.
He definitely knows biology. He provides notes and reviews for exams. The class is extremely lecture heavy and tedious. He goes off on tangents and is to detail oriented for a Intro Biology course. He is a very tough grader and will take off points if you don't hit every point he wants. The class is too intense for a class needed for general ed.
When I'm lecture he basically just reads off of his slides you're gonna have to study harder on your own if you don't learn this way and he's a harsh grader
Don't get my wrong, Mr. Kraner is a nice individual who really cares about what he's teaching. But dear LORD if he is not the most incomprehensible lectuerer I've ever had. He drones on for the entire class period and never checks up with us as to whether we're following or not. As someone who has a hard time focusing, it's a nightmare. Avoid.
Nice professor- always willing to go over questions With that being said, his class is difficult: sometimes breezes through topics because he is passionate about the subject- its easy to get lost. Initiative is important- go to lecture, ask questions, complete the study guides. He is a tough grader but will help you understand what was wrong
He is very helpful and encourages us to utilize office hours and other tutors but his power point notes don't corresponds to the work he gives us. He gives us assignment that doesn't corresponds with the textbook we bought. Why make us buy a textbook when you won't teach from that.
Can tell he's really passionate and well studied. Patient and kind personality. One of the best, interesting and underrated lecturers. Though I like the way he lectures, some people thinks he speaks too fast.
He knows biology but he needs to understand that some people are only taking because it's a required course. Very difficult to pass for non biology major. his tests are question answer and diagrams based so I would suggest not to take his class if you are non biology major. very tough grader.
For someone who's taking this class b/c I needed the credit, I don't recommend for people who are science majors. Lots of expectations for an intro class. Required to write two research papers as if working labs isn't enough. He's lecture heavy too.
Every single class was 1hr20min of fill in the blank notes only, & was hard to keep focus. Never kept up with syllabus; quizzes were always modified to remove the 1-2 chapters he never made it to. Tests are somewhat easy, but he gives wayyy too much detail in class. Would be rude if nobody in the class knew the answer. Please don't take his class.
Very great professor. I have him for Bio 1113 this summer and he teaches extremely well and is very knowledgable. As long as you read the textbook, take good notes, and complete the review guides, you will do well in the course. There is also a fair amount of workload and isn't overbearing. He is also accessible outside of class if you need help.
He's a nice person but omg his class is impossible. He is a little disorganized as professor, uses lecture notes with references to figures in textbook that don't match the chapter (useless). His online class is horrible because it's really hard to focus, you are not learning. I just got "C" for his exam even though I studies for it a lot
Sometimes it feels like he is lost in space, inconsiderate of other people. Very picky with open answer questions, when you thought you were solid you still get a B or even C. Provides way too many details on lectures, so that you don't know what to focus on. The workload is not overwhelming, but the likelihood of getting an A is low
Lectures are just professor Kraner reading off PowerPoint slides... Extremely boring, tedious 30+ minute videos of just fill-in-the-blank notes. Grading is infuriating. Just learn to read and rewrite the whole textbook to answer questions/labs or else you'll get points marked off for inaccuracy. This class is the epitome of brain dead busy work.
Dont take this prof unless you want to teach yourself. Literally reads from the book, super strict on grading, gets mad at students when they keep getting answers wrong.
Basically given notes and review questions that have to be filled and answered until next time going over it. The note taking became tedious since they were long videos to fill them out. But on the tests the review questions were the questions on the test. Will go over the answers but need to participate or he won't. Overall not bad.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He refuses to give any form of extra credit, and he grades very harshly. You will be graded solely upon labs and exams. The exams typically have 50 questions in 60 minutes with a mixture of multiple-choice, fill in the blank, and short answer. Want your grade rounded from 79.6 to 80? Nope, he will refuse and blame you.
Prof Kraner has been one of my least understanding and helpful teachers by far. if you take his class you will develop the feeling that he doesnt care about you. He doesnt really try to connect with his students and manages to find a way to blame you when you approach him with a concern.
Really knowledgeable and a great teacher overall but the tests are really rigorous and conducted in a shortly time manner. Besides Lab, there is nothing to boost your grades and the labs are going to be graded in a rigorous way. Recommend if you want to major in Bio but not recommend any people just taking it for fun!
Professor Kraner is not engaging are rarely checks to make sure students understand. The labs are graded very toughly. Do all of the chapter reviews and you'll be alright on the exams. The class was difficult, but not in a way that required learning. I got an A in the class and I feel like I still don't have a good foundation in biology
Boring professor, tough grader, avoid at all costs. Just reads off slides and expects you to get it. Worst professor I've had at Columbus State.
Literally just reads from a powerpoint all of class and is extremely boring. He gives useless information so it's hard to tell what's important but gets mad/ blames you if you have a question or don't know the answer. Also grades everything harshly, especially the article reviews.
This professor has got to be the rudest and most disrespectful professor I have ever had. I ended the class with an A that's cause I had to reteach myself everything when I went home. He gets annoyed when you ask him questions, rush through lectures, and doesn't care about students learning. For sake of your mental health don't take this man.
make sure to record EVERYTHING from the scores he gives you to the lectures to what you turned in. I would recommend keeping the number to file grievances as well because if you point out a single issue or ask a question he doesn't like early in the term then you will have issues for the rest of the time. GOOD LUCK
This is a great teacher that has taken the time to make sure we go through each topic in-depth. He let's us know weeks in advance and reminds us when tests are and even has a study session before the test. He grades fairly and when we do poorly on tests gives us a chance at a retest. I hope he teaches other classes I take!
During labs he would get angry if someone wanted to leave the lab room to use the restroom, mind you there is no restroom in the lab room. He also had us do this a Review Article where he only discussed the assignment to us once and expected us to figure things out on our own.
I do not recommend this professor at all. The reason that being is he is a TOUGH grader and, a horrible listener. This is the kind of professor who will stand in front of the slides he's presenting, read off of them, and then expect you to just magically understand it but let me not forget to add he will get so mad when you don't understand it.
The most boring class during lecture he doesn't explain things in his own words he just reads off the slides and expects us to understand. The labs are always super long for no reason and always gets mad when you dont understand something during lab. On labs he takes off points for the smallest things like misspelling something. I DO NOT recommend
Class is tough but exams are based off reviews so as long as you study you will be fine. Professor is a tough grader, however he is very helpful and will stay after class if needed.
He is very passionate about his work but does not explain things well in my opinion. The exams were mainly short answer questions and class averages on the exams were always low (50-60%). Picks out small details to take points off, especially on labs. He is a very nice man but the other biology professors are better for your grade.
This professor was awful. He does not care about anything that happens in your life outside of class. He will not let you make up a lab and will not send you the notes he went over in class if you miss for any reason. He rambles and his lectures don't make sense. Be prepared to teach yourself this class.
Clear, manageable expectations for work and assignments. Goes above and beyond to prepare the class for tests and is extremely accessible outside of class if you need assistance. As long as you're willing to do the work, he's a funny and enjoyable professor. Not a class you can just skate by in.
This professor has no understanding whatsoever. I had to have surgery in the middle of the semester and he was completely unwilling to work with me or communicate about how I could stay on track. His lecture periods are glorified study halls, but he makes attendance mandatory and says there is no excuse to be absent.
Unenjoyable and unnecessarily stressful. He assigns way too much work and forces you to use his prewritten notes (which you have to turn in for credit). The notes are hardly notes at all, they are long rambling bullet points. I am about to drop his class because he is completely unhelpful and can't coherently explain the concepts he is "teaching".
terrible, felt bullied and saw other student getting bullied for learning or physical disabilities, refused multiple times to use my accommodations which he's required to use. After reporting this he eventually starting giving me my accommodation but would consistency complain over email as he'd give requested notes.
Lectures are him reading of slides and you filling in the blanks on the notes he gives you. Extremely boring. Only graded homework is the labs so you gotta do good on exams, which are based on the review sheets at the end of each note page, test questions come from the review which is nice but I essentially taught myself the class. Don't take him
Flipped classroom, recorded lectures for homework, and review sheets in class. My class never talked so this was miserable. The exam questions are directly from the review sheets. I didn't need the textbook. The labs were very long, and he is a strict grader on them so be precise and ask questions. Overall wasn't hard, just study and do the work.
If you're thinking about taking a class with this professor, be aware that his lectures mainly involve note-taking from shared videos. I found this made it hard to engage deeply with the material, as it felt more like copying than learning. Also, his tests are based mostly on these notes, so it's something to consider.
He is super boring and reads off his slides. He doesn't post notes in blackboard so if you miss class he says you have to ask someone for the notes. But the class isn't extremely hard it's just him talking the whole time
from my experience he is a nice professor and i can tell that he's passionate about what he teaches. just disliked his teaching method and felt like i didn't learn anything. would encourage us to work together but no one cared so it sucked even more. just study and memorize the materials before the exams.
Only Labs and 2 Tests and a Final. Final is cumulative. Class is mostly note taking, lectures are mandatory; Textbook isn't used If you like studying and working on your own this class is work at your own pace, not much help given. Make a friend in class, so you can get notes; if you miss a class he doesn't provide notes. He is low-key immature.
No homework, no quizzes. He gets quite flustered and tends to lash out at us over silly things. He is very tough for no reason. We are paying to take the course and it feels like he wants us to fail. If you want to do well you have to seek out your own online quizzes or videos. Lectures are such a waste of time.
Taking this course was insufferable. We sit in class for 4 hours only to complete his guided notes instead of delivering a lecture. Also, if your answer on an assignment/exam isn't EXACTLY what he's looking for then its wrong, dont even think about including extra info for your answers bc then he'll mark off points and put stuff like "why??" "how?"
He wasn't a bad person, but I didn't really like his teaching style. You absolutely must attend lectures, or have fun trying to find the notes in your textbook, since he doesn't post the slideshows with the answers. He also tends to look for specific answers and will grade on that heavily. Homework wasn't usually that bad.
Kraner is not a bad professor but he's really boring. The lectures are just filling in blanks on note sheets he gives out while he reads off a presentation. However, the test questions are taken directly from the note sheet which is helpful. He is also willing to work with students if they miss labs even though he is constrained by rules.
