Excellent instructor. Uses silly humor to make the subject more entertaining. VERY helpful, almost to a fault. He's very patient and gladly volunteers time(within reason) should you need extra help. Very intelligent and knows his material! Definite keeper for Wake Tech.
Best math teacher i ever had. math 171 is not terrible hard but also not an easy A. he taught very clearly, made sure we were prepared for test and made sure we understood the material. word of warning, did not prepare us well for the final, but other than that, awesome!
Great Teacher. Crystal clear. When he's not crystal clear, throw him a simple question and he will help you as much as he can. Great sense of humor, not a boring class at all.
Best math teacher I've ever had. He explains things so well and ALWAYS helps and answers questions. Sometimes he would literally spend the majority of the class answering questions. Seriously a great teacher. I had to retake this class with him, and he was much, much better than my last teacher. Very helpful, clear, kind, and funny in a goofy way.
Coolest math teacher in wake tech. He always make sure that the whole class gets the problem, even if he has to spend the whole class time doing it.
He was a great teacher and always available when I didn't understand something. Was lenient with attendence when I had other things going on. Only suggestion is to do your homework when it is assigned so you have an idea of what to expect the next day
Best math techer alive. He explains everything down to detail. I have a hard time understanding math, but he was really helpful with questions and problems. I will highly recommend.
It is hard to find a good advanced math teacher in college. I took his class last semester and I can easily say he makes math extremely easy to understand. He will walk you through every problem as long as you ask and he has no problems with questions at all during class. He is extremely laid back and quite funny. I would highly recommend him
AWESOME TEACHER! I would recommend him to anyone! Really shows an interest in everyone and is willing to do anything for you to understand all the material. Pretty funny. Always gives reviews before a quiz or test. Math isn't easy for everyone, but I promise if you take his class you will gradually become better at it!
He is a such nice teacher. Always willing to help during office hours and understands that you have a life outside of class. The material is not easy for everyone, I know even though he was a great teacher I spent hours studying and really understanding the material outside of class. I've taken his 171 and 172 class and wish he taught calculus!
He's super helpful and a really sweet man:) I slacked off a little but I definitely could've gotten an A if I had asked him more questions. He's always been more than willing to help:)
Seth McElvaney is easily one of the best teachers at Wake Tech. He is a natural teacher, an unintentional comedian, and an all around nice guy. If you are looking to make Math one of your favorite subjects, Seth Mcelvaney is the teacher for you.
Took this class during summer semester. Great instructor, very quirky sense of humor. Answered questions completely, sometimes too thoroughly, which can be confusing. Do the practice problems for HW on your own, and you'll do well. Tests were hard, but he reviewed fully beforehand.
Very helpful, explains concepts clearly, and has a good sense of humor to boot, but the exams are usually hard, making time to study for this class is important to passing
Excellent teacher. Not only does he explain how to do things, he explains why you're doing them. He was so thorough with his explanations, he cleared up questions I'd had since fifth grade. He really boosted my confidence as a student and made me look forward to learning in his class every day. Love him!
he is such an awesome math teacher!
Great teacher, BEST i have had. Take notes, do the web assign, and study, and you will do well. Unfortunately, all of the exams are standard so they are hard, but he will help you and prepare you very well! Good luck!
THE BEST MATH TEACHER EVER! Literally, if you hate math, you will change your mind after this class. Helps everyone, gives extra credit, and teaches the subject really well!
BEST teacher EVER!!! Take his class and you will never regret you did. He make the class easier even though its not.
He is a very helpful teach that breaks down everything very well.
Awesome! Easily one of my favorite teachers. Laid back, funny guy. He really knows his stuff and makes it fun. I wish he was teaching MAT 172 next semester so I could take him again!
Great teacher, really made it a point to break every little step down.
He makes the material easy to learn and is very helpful in answering questions. I regret taking this class in the summer because everything was fast paced. Math test were difficult and requires studying and doing homework. Attending this class everyday is necessary in order to grasp the material.
One of my favorite teachers. He made statistics easy for me to understand and cares about his students.
I took Mr. McElvaney for an accelerated summer course and he made the class extremely fluid. I wont say he's an easy teacher because he is in between, but he relays ideas conceptually, mathematically, and visually with graphs. He basically writes down everything he says, so if you write down everything you see you will get an A.
Great professor. I visited his office several times to get a better understanding of the material. He is very helpful and there for you when you need him. Do not procrastinate on the online hw and quizzes and study hard for the exams then you will do fine:) Definitely take him!
Greatest math teacher i have ever had. He gives a crap about his students unlike a load of others that i wont mention. Pay attention in class and do the work assigned and you should be fine.
Mr. McElvaney is an extremely funny and nice guy, but not the best professor for higher-level Calculus. In my Calculus III class he was often making mistakes when lecturing, and seemed to rely on the textbook to give correct information. I would not recommend taking this professor for anything above Calculus II.
You will regret NOT taking this professor! He can make something so nightmarish like Calc II and help you get across it, because he is THERE FOR YOU and WANTS YOU TO DO WELL. If you want to get an A, here is how: listen to his lectures, take notes, don't miss an assignment, and most importantly DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS in the syllabus!
Mr. McElvaney is a great teacher. Probably the best math teacher I have had at WakeTech so far. He is eager to help you understand the material. He also cracks jokes that I find very funny.I would definitely take him again .
This is a class where if you don't show up you really won't be missed. As long as you study at home and do all of the WebAssigns you should be fine. Classes usually consist of him going over problems we didn't understand in the homework and giving us new assignments. Test are pretty easy. Knowing The Formulas Doing Well
Even though Mr. McElvaney is a math teacher at Wake Tech, he is teaching a college transfer class. I thought this class was going to be super dry because it's common sense but I was wrong. Mr. McElvaney keeps me laughing and is crystal clear on his expectations throughout class. If only I knew he was this amazing I would've signed up for his math.
I usually hate math, But Mr.M was so caring and would answer ANY questions that I had. His study guides help. If you're nervous about taking college math, take him!
This professor was good at keeping students engaged by a smooth transition between humorous jokes at the start of the class into lecture work. If you work through the homework and access the variety of materials online to supplement your studies then you will be well prepared for the coursework.
Cool, quirky guy who really knows his math and is really good at explaining topics even if math is not your strongest subject. He was always willing to answer all of my questions and ensure I really understood the material. (Also ask him to wear his banana shirt if you take him)
Mr. McElvaney was a fantastic professor. He is very knowledgable regarding the subject matter, and certainly just as passionate. If you ever need any sort of assistance, he is happy to help. Funny, smart; just an overall great guy. Reasonable amount of homework, with the occasional lab here and there. A pretty tough, but certainly fair grader.
Ok teacher but he gets behind and tests will contain material you have to self teach because he just didnt get far enough. No one asks questions or it slows him down more. He could speed up class and it would be better for all.
Mr. McElvaney is a great math professor. Precalc is a difficult math and I'm getting by with a C (mainly my fault for not putting enough work into it), but this is my only math so I'm okay with a C. He is kooky, easy-going, and doesn't mind being called out if he made a mistake. McElvaney makes math a little more bearable!
Dr. McElvaney was the best math teacher I've ever had. If math isn't your best subject, I would take his class. He'll answer any questions thoroughly so if you're stuck, ask him and he's more than happy to help.
Mr. McElvaney is a great professor when it comes to explaining the tough class that is Calc 2. I would highly recommend him to all students, he is very funny. Tests can be tough, but he is always there to help you. Be prepared to work or you wont pass.
Mr. McElvaney is always prepare, he knows how to explain every topic and you will never feel confuse after class, he has an amazing sense of humor. He gives a decent amount of homework and he is fair when it comes to grading. Take him, and you will not regret it.
Hes really Interactive with the Students, He really cares about how you do in class and hes always willing to help you with anything, readily available during his hours and has an extremely Cheerful personality in class making it fun and hard at the same time!
Math isn't my strongest subject, but was able to do well here. He does lots of practice problems to help you understand what to do. If you show your work on tests and quizzes he's very willing to give partial credit if you get answer wrong.
I took Professor McElvaney for Calculus 2 over an 8-week summer semester. I was surprised by how easy he made Calc 2, which is supposed to be one of the hardest math courses you can take. He works hard to make sure you understand the material, and is always happy to work through extra examples or go back and explain again if you have questions.
He tries hard to make you understand, which is very much appreciated. He does give partial credits but they are not very clear, sometimes you have to ask him to grade your tests again to make sure you won't lose any important point toward your letter grade. There is a lot of homework but this is maths so it will help.
Amazing instructor! I recommend him to anyone.
He is such a nice person and very excellent professor to take. Dr. Seth is one of the best math professors at wake tech. Fair grader and such a respected professor he is the best teacher ever for linear. He'll take good care of you if you're lost in the middle meet him in his office hours it will help you no doubt. I Highly recommend to take him.
Nice and caring guy, but he was a little bit overloaded and disorganized this summer semester. Grading criteria wasn't entirely clear and had issues with presentation and teaching. Tests were not very conceptual and very rote but that may be due to WTCC curriculum standards. No feedback given on HW for entire semester, assigned project last minute
Professor McElvaney was a great teacher. He graded very easily and always tried to give partial credit on tests, which was enough to boost your grade up a whole letter or 2! He cares about his students and always answers any question in detail. His lectures can be a little boring, but if you aren't the best at math and want a good grade, take him.
Taking this class online is difficult, so be prepared to study on your own, but you'll get the hang of it. Expect weekly discussion, plenty of WebAssign, and the occasional mini-project. Tests/final are 60/20%, though the lowest test is replaced by the final. Note that paying for the textbook is required to access homework for the online class.
hes a really good teacher, its just a little difficult to understand him all the time if you're bad at math(me). since the coronavirus we are online now but he is very understanding and helpful if you reach out to him, he will usually do his best in assisting you so that you can make hopefully a decent grade- alas the semester still goes on
if you're not good at math, don't take this course with him. not very clear, emails are never directly answered, with classes switching to online, it got 10x harder. he's a nice enough man, but as a teacher wouldn't take his course again
he's a nice person and is an excellent mathematician, but he had a tendency to assume we could do things in our heads. Or he'd get sidetracked halfway through a lecture, so I'd have to go to Youtube to finish my notes as the textbook may as well be written in heiroglyphs for all the sense it made. If you struggle with math, don't take him.
While trying to be objective as I can, I would not recommend this professor if you cannot do stat online. Group projects were a mess. No personal video lectures. Pearson/YT videos only (not his own). Felt very awkward trying to reach out to him after he insinuated some students of cheating in my section. It's possible to pass, but be ready to work.
Class was pretty straightforward. There was a lesson and quiz most weeks, with some group projects and exams throughout.
He's a really nice guy, but online classes are NOT for him. Almost nobody understands what he's trying to explain when he gives lectures. He assigned us 4 WA HWs due on the same day with a lot of questions, same for the week after (&they're so time-consuming!). It's like he forgets we have a life/4 credit hr classes. Steer clear if you can please!
I took MAT 280 with professor McElvaney online. The worse thing I have experienced at Wake Tech. Professor did not come prepared to class at all. he does not grade the material on time at all. Finals are next week and I still do not have a grade for the class. If you actually want to understand Linear Algebra try to avoid professor McElvaney.
There is going to be a lot of group projects so be prepared. He was accessible outside of office hours. Very sweet and patient and talks you through it when you REACH out for help. This isn't an easy course. Put a lot of time and effort. He takes a long time to grade assignments though. Book not needed, the slides and notes should help you !
Good overall professor. He responded to all of my emails and gave extensions on assignments (with valid excuses). The only complaint I have is that he didn't grade majority of the assignments until the very end of the course, which means you didn't really know where you stood in terms of your overall grade. WebAssigns, 5 Portfolio Projects, 2 exams
Very nice and responsive. He provides a lot of information and gives multiple examples. The only issue I had with the class was the amount of group projects. The groups are sorted by him. If you have an awesome group who are all involved, you're set!
this man does not know how to teach like he genuinely doesn't know what he is talking about 85% of the time. Want clarification on something? Don't bother asking he literally does not know how to help you understand. He teaches as minimal as possible and he says "uh" after every sentence. good luck.
no lectures given (unacceptable for a math class), notes and powerpoints aren't useful, grading wasn't clear or transparent, and i learned everything on youtube and through webassign. it's a real bummer bc i wanted to learn, but he gave 0 resources.
Took it online. A few tips for this class is to make sure you understand Unit#1(RREF). Because the subject will keep building on it until the last section of the class you will need it. Grading is slow but is NOT a big deal for me. This class is NOT the same as other maths (Calc..). It's an abstract idea of math (example: verifying ten axioms).
Mcelvaney is a really nice person, cares for his students and wants the best for us, he will answer any question you have and he will happily answer, he has lots office hours as well, overall good teacher
Don't take this prof for online classes. I had no responses many times I emailed him, he doesn't grade tests till the very last minute, and you don't know what your grade in the class is till the last few days of class. His tests are super vague and fairly difficult as well. Projects were tedious and had numbers that didn't make sense. Beware.
Material is not explained clearly, students have to correct him multiple times, and he's not approachable. Due dates are at weird times [late afternoon] which basically eliminates an entire day to complete the assignment for people who work! No late work unless you're dying. Good luck getting feedback from labs [late grader] before the test.
The work in this class was very simple. He gave a very reasonable amount of time to complete work and would give extensions if needed. Even the tests were not very difficult and your grade will get evened out a lot with the homework. I will say, his due dates were at 5pm instead of the normal 11:59pm which can be confusing at first.
He is nice but he can't teach at all! even Khan Academy, ILC Math tutor taught me way better. Don't get me wrong he is friendly, and I personally feel learners who are visual learners and math is not your strongest suit please don't get this professor. He grades late, his lectures do not make sense half of the time. I even dropped his class.
McElvaney is one of the best at Wake Tech. He was incredibly understanding towards me during a rough time. I was on the verge of dropping the class at one point in the semester & he talked me into trying. Gave me an extension & a 2nd chance. Class isn't completed but I won't forget what he did for me. He is very deserving of more 5-star reviews.
I thoroughly enjoyed linear algebra w/ Professor McElvaney. Some of the concepts can be initially unintuitive and may require reading the textbook more than once, but overall the course serves as a gentle introduction to many foundational concepts in the study of linear algebra. In addition, Prof. McElvaney is a lovely guy. I recommend!
McElvaney is amazing! He is approachable and always likes to help. If you do the homework and put in at least a little effort studying for tests, you will be fine in statistics.
This professor teaches an online course but holds office hours on his phone. So he writes on the board with one hand and then holds his phone with the other. This is not a professor who puts in effort for their students success.
He doesn't know how to manage his class time properly-- he never ends class on time and tends to start an entirely new topic 5 minutes before class ends. Because of this, he rushes through that topic. There's been many times where he has taught us an extremely important topic on the day of the test. On a positive note, his tests are fairly easy.
I took him for Stat and Linear Algebra. I enjoyed Linear Algebra a lot. Sometimes his stat lectures would be kind of boring. I think my stat class was generally unmotivated, so I don't blame him. I highly recommend him for Linear Algebra.
Pros: Will give you points where they can, kind of grader, accommodating, helpful, able to explain in different ways. Cons: Course was too fast with too many assignments per week. @The Organic Chemistry Tutor on utube to learn concepts. FYI: Will need to buy the WebAssign accesscode. Get ahead with the online hw and quizzes, focus on the lab manual
Prof. McElvaney is great. He always treated me with respect and gave good feedback when I reached out. For a class that most consider difficult, I thought he made it easy to understand through completing the homework and labs. I thought his test were very fair too. Just make sure you understand the first chapter, REF and RREF, and you will shine!
This professor takes forever to grade assignments/tests. There are group labs. Do not take this class online, the resources provided are unhelpful and most of the content comes from the textbook and PowerPoints.
Very difficult class with minimal notes. Drop class and take online!!
He's a nice person but does not know how to teach at all. It takes him close to 30 minutes to solve a problem and half the time would go on tangents around the questions and avoid solving or answering the question. He does not make his own material so trying to get hw help will leave you confused. If youre bad at math already be aware.
Online so ur learning from the textbook, his PPs were summary of textbook and pretty helpful. Content can be hard to grasp but doable, make sure to stay on top of material the first few units bc everything builds on it. WA and study guide were similar to tests. Group labs weren't helpful. 4 exams + final. Final replace lowest. Not much partial cred
He is nice, but you will face a problem in understanding, tests, and grading with him. Don't be surprised if he takes a lot of points from you for mistakes that someone else has committed and didn't take the same from him. If you aren't good at math, beware.
He's a great person. Super nice. The problem is that he lectures the whole class and his lectures are not very engaging. Because of this, I taught myself the material with his PowerPoint. I finished all his homework assignments during class and, subsequently, I did not have to do much work out of class.
Prof. McElvaney was very stable when teaching, cracking an occasional joke without it being too edgy, and was very nice to students. The material on the test was covered in sufficient detail in classes, and if you showed your work he gave points on the tests. Group projects are by default not preferrable but they were not intolerably hard here.
Professor McElvaney can crack a joke now and then but I didn't get what he was teaching half of the time so I had to teach myself most of the time. And the lectures are not engaging at all.
Took Prof McElvaney for MAT 271. He is good. He makes it clear what will be on the test. He does not give a lot of homework or labs. I am going to take him for MAT 272. However, he gives ZERO extra credit opportunities. I asked multiple times for an extra credit opportunity, and he said no every time. I would have an A if given slight extra credit.
This professor seems to be a very nice person; however, I took his class in a summer semester in person. Entering into the seventh week of class he had only graded 3 assignments. I had a very difficult time understanding what he was saying because he would go on random tangents very often. Look for a new professor, if you struggle with the basics.
Test are way harder then they should be. I seen my friends test from other teachers and it's so much easier. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Takes a while to grade work. Took online over the summer and there were ~3 homeworks and a lab due each week. Exams are graded reasonably, final replaces lowest exam grade. Utilize the test reviews.
This is my second time taking this prof. He was AWFUL this semester. He posted 2 labs and 1 project right before Thanksgiving break that was due the day we came back along with an exam. This is an ex of the things he did. He never posted reviews or answer keys when he said he would. Never answered emails or messages. His tests are not very hard.
While he was nice and sweet, he was very scatterbrained. Lectures were almost entirely based on examples the students requested, so there was little organization or preparation. He takes a while to grade minor assignments, but is lenient with extensions and grading. As someone with ADD I wouldn't recommend him, but the course wasn't unmanageable.
His tests are INCREDIBLY hard. It's unreasonable it's not that I don't understand what I'm learning. In fact I understand it very well, but he just asks unreasonable things. He teaches things last 5 min of class. I would never ever take his class again. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. RUN AWAYYYYYYY.
This is the only review you need to read. He is very Nice I will not deny that he's a very good teacher in the sense that he is very lenient and will help with anything. He does a part of the homework for us in class. His only issue is his tests are a bit on the harder end, but they're really not thattt bad. I think you should take him FOR CALC 1.
Took online. The class was jumbled at best, it's my recommendation not to take online. Linear Algebra is already abstract as far as math goes, without clear and consistent guidance it made the class more difficult than needed. He is fair with grading and is easily accessible often at any hour it seems. Really hit or miss with test review imo.
There didn't appear to be much consideration put into planning the schedule for the class. Lots of homework with arbitrary due dates that are back to back. Online tutorials more helpful than the lectures. Rather have a professor that that has empathy and holds a genuine interest in creating an academic environment in which all students can succeed.
Overall great professor. He is caring. He can mumble at times so be ready for that.
Fun professor. Really lenient grader for exams and gives a lot of partial credit. Lots of WebAssign HW but the HW isn't for a grade. First two units are a breeze if you remember anything at all from high school algebra. Can mumble sometimes but will explain anything if you ask.
Great professor for MAT 152, while his lectures are boring, they are very helpful and teach you exactly what you need to know for tests. His class consists of 3 tests and a final; however, he provides a week of review where he does practice problems that are very similar to the tests. The subject itself is not very hard, but it is Excel-savvy.
The professor seems like a nice person but honestly doesn't seem to be the best professor for asynchronous classes. While the material itself is quite interesting, you will pretty much be teaching yourself everything from the book since he provides minimal supplemental material.
Great professor. Though could easily be more efficient in class time.
