Awesome Professor!
Great professor. Fair grader and willing to his students. He is really easy going.
great guy! interesting class, gives a few quizes and assigns a few papers. easy classs! DEFINTLY RECCOMEND
WORST GRADER EVER............I ATTENDED THE CLASS AND DID WELL ON EVERYTHING AND DID ALL HIS PAPER AND WHAT DO I GET??? AN B!!!ARE YOU SERIOUS??? THE CLASS IS SOO BORING ALL HE DOES IS SHOW BORING DOCUMENTARIES AND I WAITS UNTIL THE CREDITS!! WHO WAITS TO SEE THE CREDITS?? WELL, IF YOU WANT A GRADE THAT BRINGS YOUR GPA DOWN TAKE THIS CLASS....
Very easy, we watched documentaries every day, most of them were interesting. Quizzes over the vocab in the text book, super easy if you just glance at the definitions. His participation policy isn't very fair because we had a big class and there's no way everyone could have spoken as much as he wanted us to in order for all of us to get an A
Extremely easy professor! very interesting documentaries.. if you have an open mind you will love this class.. u actually learn a lot about the media... very interesting and fun class!! easy grader and easy to pass.
He made the winter term fun,he's a good guy,and brings up pretty brilliant discussions. Knows his stuff, appreciates effort, and is very open minded.
We watched a wide variety of films and discussed it in depth. It was basically like hanging out with friends for an hour. Highly recommended. Participation is mandatory, just like a discussion with friends.
AWSOME PROFESSOR!!...Actually one of my best. One that i will always remember...The class was very interesting. We watched lots of documentarys and I learnt a lot. I would definately recommend. QC Sociology Dept have some of the worst professors, but Professor Shire out of a 100 I would give him 150 hes that good.
Best professor on campus!!He interacts with the students on whole new level. He shows a vary of documentaries and open your minds. Also, we skyped with Doug Block and other filmmakers. He goes beyond the classroom experience.
He shows alot of movies/documentaries. His discussions are well organized. He gave one essay in the beginning and quizzes which he does review for. Take it
One of the nicest professors you will meet at QC, extremely helpful you attend class participate in discussion. Study for quizzes. Strict no phone policy, but if you're a college student it's true you don't need to be on it 24/7. Take this class even if for just the A. You have to want to fail to get a bad grade.
Nice professor. More like a high school class not college. Strict no phone or computer (during films) policy. Feels more like a film class than sociology. Easy A. Go to class and participate and you'll be fine. A few quizzes and a take home final.
You will be very lucky to take any classes from Prof.Shire.His classes are very interesting and class participation is very important. However,he always encourages his students and nothing you say will make him say anything critical, he's Very kind. we learned so much about the media and popular culture. I wish he was teaching more classes at QC!!
Very easy class. Take home final with 10 question quizzes throughout the term. Only about two 1-2 page papers given. Professor Shire focuses less on giving "busy-work" and providing in class examples of films and clips to spark interesting discussions regarding the course. An amazing class to spark interest in sociology for anyone. Also, an easy A!
Extremely simple class. He is very strict on laptops and cell phone use. Class consisted of watching movies/documentaries and relating them to sociological terms. Fun way to learn about things that were new to me. Can't complain at all
this professor is so nice! i enjoyed his class this semester. he showed interesting video sand related it to sociology. overall he is very kind hearted and joyful. he cares about his students a lot also. he also made the final really fun!!
Take him!! He's one of the best professors in the sociology department. We skyped with film directors. Midterm and final: 1 1/2 to 2 Pages. No exams just quizzes. If you're a film lover, take him!!
Wonderful instructor, fun class, makes everything interesting and enjoyable. This guy knows his stuff. Encourages class participation. In-class viewing of very interesting videos, documentaries, films, etc. Guest speakers (either in person or via Skype) add much. Take this class, you will be glad you did.
This is a great professor! I really enjoyed the class. We watched a lot of documentaries but they were very interesting and we had the chance to meet a lot of film makers which was really fun.
I loved Professor Shire's class! Although he did show a lot of films during the class, he is excellent in relating the topic of sociology to the films we watch! He is a super fair teacher and is really motivated in teaching this class. His class is worth it, and you do learn a lot! Make sure to read when told and watch the films to do well!
Professor Shire is an amazing professor. He makes the course very enjoyable, but at the same time it's an excellent learning experience. You can learn a lot from him and receive a very high grade as long as you follow three simple rules: Come to class on time, don't talk while he's talking, and never use your phone. Talk onlyduring class discussion
Professor Shire is one of the best professors I have ever had. Definitely the best in Queens College. The class was very interesting and thought provoking. His teaching style is free-form where discussions are open and he really encourages students to come to their own conclusions about social and media issues that shape society today. A+++
Took him at York College. He's very big on attendance and getting there on time. He is finished with attendance as soon as the class is scheduled to start which is pretty ridiculous and annoying. Watched many films that helps you to grasp the material. He's helpful and a good professor but dislikes lateness and all electronics.
LOVE prof shire. He shows films that relate to the lesson, in order for it to stick into your mind. Tests are super easy, 90100 every time because he goes over it the class prior to the test date. he HATES lateness, come on time & no cell phones. hes an amazing proff, TAKE HIM FOR AN A
OMG THIS PROFESSOR IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME. He teaching techniques are also different. He uses movies basically for every lesson and it gives a clear understanding. His quizzes are very straight forward and easy. Highly recommend!
hes the best prof. take him. u will love him.. we learn sociological terms through movies and documentary. don't take if u don't love watching movies.
ODD Dude. Almost certainly writes his own reviews. If they lined up all the teachers at QC and ranked them by their creepy factor, this guy would be at the front of the line.
Best prof so far through my college career. Changed my entire outlook on sociology. Nicest guy and a really interesting class. Not a lot and the quizzes are very do able. A MUST TAKE!
It was just such a nice class where we watch movies and discuss sociological terms. There were a lot of controversial topics brought to us and we were able to speak our mind on them. He is a bit hyper, Jolly old fellow kind of guy and he is super nice and sweet. Cellphones and lateness drive him CRAZY though, don't be that guy. Thou MUST taketh!
There are 4 quizzes with 10 questions or so and you just need a vague idea of what common words like "norms" and "taboo" mean and he goes over them extensively to the point where even where a slightly above average middle school student could get 100% on every quiz including the final. Participate at least every other day for the easiest A.
Professor Shire is an amazing professor. He really doesn't give much homework. We watch movies that he associates the key terms with- it is very helpful and exciting. He is a very fair grader. His quizzes are extremely easy. Basically he just wants his students to pass. Every professor should be like him
Prof. Shire's teaching style is more dialogue than monologue, he encourages participation in discussions. He knows this topic, and with this class, so will you. Classes are not only interesting and informative, but a lot of fun. You never want to miss a class. Made me more interested in Cinema, and the periods covered. Take this class!
Prof Shire is very kind, considerate, and concerned that you do well. Many documentaries to watch; most all are interesting. Even those docs less exciting enlighten you to media's role in society so keep an open mind to them all! He's extremely knowledgeable of documentaries & films. Guest writers, producers & directors are an additional treat!
I took this course during the winter session and it was amazing! His quizzes were on key terms, definitions and about the films we saw in class. For the amount of time we had to learn the material, I learned a lot. Make sure you participate and do all the extra credit assignments. DO NOT use your phone in his class, he will point you out!
If you're taking Sociology to fulfill your core requirements, this is the professor to take. Films are an essential part to this course, and the professor uses them in a relevant and accurate way in order to get the material across. Show up to class, watch the films, relate them to the terms and you'll get an A.
What a great teacher!! Honestly, there is nothing negative to say about Professor Shire. His classes are so interesting and never boring. We learned so much about the history of movies, never realized how good old movies are and how the topics relate to sociology, unbelievable teaching on his part, great class!!
He is an okay professor. Make sure you stay on his good side. NO PHONES WHATSOEVER. If you want to pass make sure phones are away and come to class on time. He doesn't give test they are just quizzes and he reviews for it the day before.
Great professor. Great class. Just make sure all electronics are away. Easy, you'll see.
Don't worry about doing your best on quizzes and the final. He grades off your participation and if he sees your phone (and throws a hissy fit ). If you're serious about sociology don't take him. If you are looking to just fulfill a requirement or for the credits, and like watching movies, go for it.
teacher is very nice and always there to help in a very clear way test is easy
The movies we watched were incredibly boring and the documentaries for HW are boring af. He is super patronizing, and whether he wants to admit it or not he has clear favorites. Wants participation except what is there to say when you watch a dull movie? His HW assignments are on another level of dull. I always dread going to his class.
Professor Shire is AMAZING! His tests are all multiple choice and easy once you pay attention in class. He shows movies all the time which are very fun and interesting, and almost never take notes in class. He assigns readings from the textbook (not many) and the only at home assignments are extra credit papers.
The class was fine, watched a lot of movies and discussed them in class often with the directors. HW assignments required watching a movie and then answering a prompt. I'll be honest those movies were BORING. And class discussions often turned into people vocalizing their political views. That said, it's sociology and the prof makes it bearable.
Professor Shire is great! Class is VERY manageable. There are a few quizzes (15 Qs), a short (1-2 pages)writing assignment, & then one "big" quiz at the end (40 Qs). We watched (good) movies every single class. Attendance and participation are a must to receive an A. Write down his comments during the movies and that is the quiz.
Wonderful class, a great experience. There is a reason why so many students who take Prof. Shire for one class take him again for another class --- he's that great! Shows films in class, discusses them, and has visiting speakers either in person or via Skype who were involved in the making of the films. Lots of fun, and you learn a lot. .
Wow! This class was amazing! Watching films in class (some were classics I knew about, some gems I had never heard of before) followed by great discussions and lectures. I understand so much more about different genres of cinema. Students who take Prof. Shire for one class tend to take him again for another class, and you can see why. Great..
Literally the best professor ever. I love how he shows clips and movies to let us understand sociological concepts. He basically tells us quiz answers during class. Easiest class ever and nicest teacher ever. Definitely recommend.
All we did was watch films in this class and take some quizzes. He makes it easy, the workload isnt alot.
LOVE HIM. Amazing professor. So laid back, the class is a joke. You go, watch really interesting and discussion provoking films, and talk about them. You take a few easy 13-16 question multiple choices quizzes and like two 1 1/2 page writings, he gives excellent feed back. MUST show up to class no phones, takes 5 points off final grade if seen.
Great class. The Movies we watched helped reinforce all of the terms we needed to know for the quizzes. To sum it up: Don't come late, don't use your phone (I made that mistake once) , participate, and be sure to listen for key terms as they will be on the quizzes.
Focus mainly on studying the definitions and not the other material in the textbook, especially if you have a tendency to over think your quiz answers. Class is mainly reviewing movies so make sure you are able to speak out loud and clearly. Most of the movies are interesting. He gives extra credit that raises your grade by half a letter grade.
The professor isn't clear about the requirements and how much they count. Very inconsistent!
I've now taken two classes with Shire. He is not clear, and during class seems to have a much higher opinion of the endless number of films he shows than the class does. I read the Ratemyprofessor rankings and have a hard time figuring out who wrote them. I would not recommend this adjunct.
Overall I love the class even though I only had him for college now it was a great experience to be able to gain the over view of how college life is like. I learned a lot from sociology. The films and movies make the class now boring it makes it more engaging toward our learning
This class is easy. Just show up, don't get caught being on ur phone, do the papers, and you'll be fine.
This is a fun class. If you listen to the professor and do as he says you will do just fine, no phones and interruption. the films and clips are very important, because it brings everything together.
Professor Shire incorporates a lot of movies and videos into his class which was great, it really helped by providing examples of the definitions he presented in class. If you go to class every day and listen to him when he explains the film, you would be able to do well on his quizzes. Oh and no phones ever.
Easy class. Great lectures, most of them are video clips. Exams are easy if you study. Pay attention in class and you'll do good. And he is very nice.
this professor is cool and understandable. easy quiz and 1 or 2 papers and gives extra credit work
Too many films... Please lecture!!!!
Took this class in Winter 2018. You can earn an A if you come to class AHEAD of time, DON'T look at or use your phone, actively participate. That's it. There were 3 quizzes, 1 paper and 2 extra credits. 25% of grade was based on participation. For the quizzes, make sure to take solid notes when he explain the scenes during films. He's easy going.
The class is easy but he is CRAZY about use of phones in class. DON'T DO IT. He will catch you one way or the other. Participate in class discussions. You will easily get a good grade if not an A.
Easy A, just show up and review what he goes over in class.
Great professor with clear grading criteria. He shows movies every class, and does a brief discussion of topics relating to sociology and the movie, with simple and easy to understand quizzes.
SHOW UP LISTEN AND YOU WILL PASS. DO NOT PULL OUT YOUR CELL HE WILL TAKE POINT FROM YOUR GRADE. WE WATCH VIDEOS THAT ARE RELATED TO SOCIOLOGY. WHICH I LOVE IT DIDN'T MAKE LESSON BORING MADE IT INTERESTING. MINI QUIZ WHICH ARE COMMON SENSE IF YOU PAY ATTENTION. HE CARES FOR HIS STUDENT HE WAS AMAZING. TOOK HIM AT BMCC SPRING 2018 SOC 100
Easy class to pass. Make sure not to use your phone during class or he'll take points off your grade. Not too many exams. They were based on topics discussed in class. You watch a few films during class and write a short paper on it.
coolest professor and funniest class, must take. minimal workload. ez
Easiest A of my life. The entire semester we just watched movies and then were quizzed on various sociological concepts that appeared in the movies. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE! He will take 5 points off your final grade for each time he sees you using it during class
This class made inspired me to be a sociology major. Take this professor if you can.
I love this professor. Before this course, I was straight, but this professor's lectures turned me into a Bi. I loved how he showed us many R rated videos in class like deepthroat for which we wrote a 6 pg research paper. Loved how he promoted taboos like inbreeding and gender changing. He said gender should be a matter of choice. He is so handsome
Professor Shire is amazing! He makes it fun to learn! His class was super easy! He's the best! He cares for his students and he's entertaining!
He's amazing!! Super funny, very engaging, and makes hard topics very easy to understand. Goes through 1-3 topics in a class, then shows you about 1 or 2 movies to help you understand them in a real-world context. Plus the movies are actually interesting. Gives you PDFs of the textbook so you don't need to buy it, and quizzes are 10-15 questions.
Hes such a funny and engaging professor and the films he shows in class are actually really entertaining (we watch movies, Seinfeld episodes, YouTube pranks, one documentary here and there, etc) so we can better relate sociological concepts to real life. His quizzes are short and straight forward. I highly recommend taking him!
AMAZING professor because he's actually excited about what he teaches! Lots of films and documentaries; mandatory attendance; clear criteria of what to expect on the quizzes; cumulative final; participation heavy; three latenesses equal a missed class; NO LATE WORK AND NO CELLPHONES
Hes awesome
Fantastic professor gives a phenomenal class! Due to the Covid pandemic all courses became online. Prof. Shire made you feel that you were actually present, despite the fact that it was distance learning. Course was synchronous, so all students were able to participate and interact. Interesting topics covered, great guest speakers..
Amazing professor cares a lot about the students. Easy class to do well in if you show up and take notes. Highly recommend taking this course.
This class was the best class I've taken so far. He makes class funny and enjoyable while also learning. There is very little homework, but little quizzes are given every week or two. We watch movies during class to analyze it and relate it to vocab terms. I highly recommend this class!
I loved this class, it was one of my favorites. We watch interesting movies every class, so theres never a dull day. Professor Shire gives a couple of quizzes, but if you come to class theyre super easy, he drops the lowest grade, and he even goes over the questions the night before, which is great.
Seth Shire is an amazing professor. He uses films and the popular media to illustrate sociological concepts. The class makes learning enjoyable and exciting, each session is fun to attend. It is easy to see why students who take one class with him want to take more courses that he teaches. Strongly recommend you take anything he offers. .
I actually looked forward to going to each 2 hour and half sessions because it was calm. The professor found great ways to express his lectures to us. One way would be through movies. Our class would consist of watching movies and analyzing them afterwards. Adding on, there were textbook pages posted to read and quizes now and then.
Very nice and considerate professor! Love how interested he is in the course and very exuberant about our answers and responses! 100% recommend
Overall, Professor Shire is an amazing professor. We learned the vocabulary through films. It was interesting class. I would recommend to take while watching the films rather than just watching them in class.
Dope teacher, he grades you thoroughly so make sure to start your work for his class in advance and not do it last minute. You will do fine if you show up for the reviews, study a couple of hours for the quizzes, and a day or two for the final and you will do fine. He wont let you make up homework though so be careful.
Ok. I don't know why Rate MY Professors lets Shire write his own reviews. I would not recommend him, but he recommends himself
I took Professor Shire's class for sociology 101. It is clear he is very passionate about sociology, and wants students to be as interested as he is. There are a lot of films that he uses in his classes, and he will make you do discussion boards. Overall, I enjoyed his class, and I would retake it again! You won't be bored or disappointed.
This professor never responds to emails in a timely fashion, you will be stuck confused, especially if something is not clear. Strict with grading, unorganized, and does not post assignment details even after he says he will.
