Have great knowledge of his field. Always come prepared to class. Actually helps alot students to get better marka. Marks aren't curved. Provide full detail and structure of exms. Exam fairly easy if u read the text thoroughly. Niel Boyd's text is very good. First course i took in crim but likedvery
They say those who can't: teach. I found him to be disrespectful, pissing off at us if we left early, when he'd already gone 10 minutes overtime. He dulls to a point where one might want to commit suicide. If I wanted a bed time story I would have asked my mommy! Possibly the worst prof ever!
This man should have b&b suites put up in his class so that we can catch up in some zzz. You don't learn anything b/c he just reads his notes and isn't aware that anyone, other than him, is in the class. He always goes overtime and gets pissy if you leave although you have a class to go to.
He knows his info. he just can't teach. Reading to a hall of people does not qualify as teaching. No one ever shows up to lecture for a reason. One of the worst profs I've ever had the 'pleasure' of having.
He is one of the worst profs I've ever had!!! He just stands up there and reads his notes. Also teaches the class like we are all going to go to law school. The material is not bad, but he makes it unbearable.
Shafik can't teach; he just reads straight off his own notes. And he wonders why nobody goes to class. Frequently goes overtime. Some ppl actually have classes afterwards! Boyd's textbook is very useful & easy to understand though. Course itself is not hard.
What is everyone complaining about? He has good powerpoint slides and he highlights the major points in lecture. He emails back quickly - is fair; and he adds a lot of examples from his work experience to clarify some of the statutes. His lectures are interesting and relevant. Also, he can control the class volume - something not many profs do.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.....don't have to attend class....just get to your tut. and you'll ace the course
i liked law, emphasising likED. worst prof u can ever have. powerpoints are not "points" they are power-paragraphs, although u dont have to go to class with those kinds of notes. He does need to learn how to use powerpoint, not very good with tech. textbook is a must read, tut is a must go (cuz of the participation marks), lec u can skip.

Shafik is a good teacher. Yes, he does sometimes not get to the point right away but he gives really good examples from his life experiences...after all we can't learn everything from books. He is helpful and answers his emails right away. Did I mention that he is a fast marker. He is fair and really wants his students to get the point. His slides
his slides are a bit detailed but to me that was helpful. I don't get why people don't like his teaching skill...I thought he was a great prof! He does not read to the class by the way...he refers to his notes...what's wrong with that.

his lectures may not be great, but his notes are pretty good. they pretty much sum up the chapters so if you're the lazy type just study his notes and you should be ok. his tests are fair esp the short answers but his mc can be a little tricky. as for the long answer make sure you read the textbook for full marks

The guys knows his stuff, has experience in the field
Don't go to lecture- waste of time. READ THE TEXTBOOK and ignore everything else. KNOW every single detail. His lectures are a drag- he never gets the point.

I am taking his class this semester (Spring 2006). The best teacher I ever had. I am suprised how passionate the guy is about teaching and his work as a lawyer. He also treats students with respect and breaks things down in words we would understand.
Took this professor's course this semester. Just wrote the final exam. The exam was tough but fair. Logved his lectures and very interesting reading materials. If you wantt o go to law school, this is a good course to take or if you want to take higher level law related courses int eh future. The discussion was very deep on hot current issues.
I took this course with him in Spring 06 - Very good teacher! Course material is interesting and he gives real life examples. Good law course - excellent for future lawyers. One of my favourite professors. Sometimes he doesn't get to the point - but the material is easy to grasp, so its not bad at all. I would highly recommend him 9/10
Nice guy - very boring however. Makes me wonder if he thinks the whole class is stupid as he attempts to clarify, reclarify and re-reclarify the most basic of concepts. He does try hard however and his exams are not as easy as you might suspect from his lectures. Work moderately hard and you will do well.
Great teacher, he, entertaining and very knowledgeable.lpful
Managed to get an A- without attending one lecture. Couldn't even tell you what he looked like. Read the book, you'll do fine.
useless
The prof was very good and knew his stuff and lectured very well. Most professors I have had do not have this sort of passion and this fellow did and was quite the teacher. I think those complaining did poorly in the course. This prof is both cerebral and very interesting with his practical examples. Want to learn and enjoy it then take his course
Did not enjoy this course very much. The lectures didn't seem to be very helpful, so just read the textbook + courseware. I found the material unbelievably dry but Bhalloo does try to make the concepts relevant to his students.
Great to have a lawyer teaching this course. Someone who has actually practical experience and is interesting to listen to. he was very good and I enjoyed his lectures very much
sooo sick best prof i've had at SFU explains things with great examples from real cases!
I am currentky a student of his in Criminology and the teacher is very apssionate about teaching and extremely knowldgeable. He is a lawyer who gives lots of examples of things in the course readings and his lectures supplement the text very well. I would highly recommend this teacher to any. By far one fot eh better teachers I have ever had
Very good lecturer, entertaining, fun and interesting. Rocks!
intelligent, great lecturer and fun to go to his class
best prof! Look forward to his lectures. You will learn plenty and have fun going to his class. He makes it entertaining and educational.
I have him currently for Crim 135 but he also teaches Business 393 and I think he is great. I find this course challneging, fun and look forward to it as he makes it entertaining int he class and easy to understand, even difficult concepts. WOuld love it if he taught other courses.
He teaches a commercial law course and I am having lots of fun going to his lectures. He brings in real world examples from his own practice as a lawyer and explains it in context of the theoretical materials in the text. He is totally the best prof I have this semester and frankly a memorable one when I graduate. If you are at SFU, take hi class
Makes topics easy to understand. Has great examples and keeps you interested with his humour.
Really nice guy, very clear in lectures and provides excellent notes! Exams are not easy, neither was the case brief. Does his best to make a pretty dry class interesting and gives good real-life examples from his law practice to clarify. I would take a class with him again - TAs are hard markers though!
He's nice and genuinely wants you to do well in the class. Attend the lecture, take notes, DO THE READINGS, and you'll be fine. If you do significantly better on the final than you did on the mid term, he might even change the weighting so that the final is worth more and the midterm is worth less.
I thought he was a great prof. Lectures were extremely interesting. Very knowledgeable about the area and extremely passinate about what he is doing. Made the course fun and easy to understand. Very entertaining and helpful. Wish there were more teachers like him. I am motivated to go to law school because of him.
The opposite of what I thought a law professor would be. Really cool and funny guy. I found his lecturing invaluable although at first he did seem to go on a tangent. He is very approachable for a conversation and will help you out wherever he can. The midterm was a little bit difficult with a 65% average but final should be better. I recommend him
Great prof. Very intelligent and great lectures.
Awesome professor, really funny. Makes law really interesting.
I have him for commercial law class. He is a very good teacher. Love the lectures. Makes things very understandable and very easy to talk to. Taking another class from him next semester in adifferent area of law-humand rights and civil liberties. Would definitely recommend him. Very lively and fun.
Writting exam in the course today so I can be a little objective bout it before getting my overall mark. I think the course was taught very well and the teacher did a good job. I agree with otehr comments that he is a very good teacher and very entertaining. Need more like him.
Shafik is one the best profs at SFU, definitely an asset for SFU! He explains concepts really well since he brings in real life examples, it really helps clear up some of the confusions. Unfortunately, it is very easy to do bad in this class because its all theory and his exams are not easy! So keep up with readings and just memorize everything!
I agree with many comments about this prof being very good. I did not find his exam unfair. I think if you attend his lectures (which I found very useful and fun and I looked forward to them), and if you read the materials you would do well in his class. I intend to take another law course with him next semester as he teaches crim335-Civil Liberti
Good prof, very good lecturer. Has tons of examples so your never really left wondering how that applies to real world situation. He's a pretty entertaining lecturer. Definetely a good prof
Need more teachers like him. very good lecturer. Got me interested in the materials and very helpful in explaining things in a manner one would understand. Very entertaining in the class. I think his experience as a lawyer helped tremendously in making the class exciting
Awesome teacher!Awesome course! just loved it!
Awesome teacher! Enjoyable experience. Going to law school next year and this course and teacher motivated me.
DItto to the favourable comments. I loved this teacher's style and the course too.
I am in his commercial law course course right now and intend to take the Human RIghts Course in criminoloy he teaches. I really enjoy his lectures. He is relly good lecturer and he involves the class in his lectures and is very entertaining. He makes the content very fun with real examples of cases he does. Need more like him at this campus.
Refreshing personality for a prof. Good class and great lectures. Too bad some students are a bit slow and break his pace in the lecture which is just right. Very respectful of students. Makes you feel very comfortable and does not hurry you out of the office during office hours. takes serious interest in you understanding the stufs
Shafik is a great professor. He has the ability to keep students not only awake but interested in the material. He has an example for almost every concept he teaches. I would definitely recommend taking the class with him. Midterms and finals are more than fair and if you study the material, you can do well!
Just completed his course. Great teacher! Learned so much and he is funny, intelligent and very smart teacher. Very quick witted. Take the course and you will learn and have fun doing it more than I can say for many courses I have taken in my last 4 years.
It is 4th week of his class today. I have never gotten up for an 8:30 lecture and stayed awake but this guy rocks! Really! He has about a 150 students in his class that early to listen to lectures. This is summer time I am talking about. He is very very good. Commercial law sounded soooo dry but he makes it fun and easy to understand.
Super teacher. Love his lectures. Got inspired to go to lawschool because of him
he makes the materials to be interesting. As a lawyer, he is a good teacher, meaning he explains clearly about the topics.
"Awesome"! In addition to Bus 393 I think he teaches some Criminology law related courses too. You have to try him once, he is really good.
The best prof in Business faculty I've had in my 4 years. You can tell with the attendance in his lecture at 8:30 a.m. on Fridays that he is good. Very good in explaining concepts. Very respectful and you can talk to him without feeling intimidated. I really like him.
Shafik is 1 of the best profs I've had in my degree. Corp.law isn't an easy course for many bus students, esp. when the curriculum requires lots of readings, writing and presenting. However, Shafik manages to be clear when using real life case examples to explain course materials. He also has an awesome humour, which keeps students awake at 8:30!:)
His lectures are very interesting. His style is unique. He makes you feel like he is talking to you. he also engages you in class and makes it fun while you learn. I actually look forward to his class although it si early in the a.m. on Fridays. Oversubscribed course. People know he is good
Rocks! Love the teacher an love the course. Good style of teaching.
He is very good! He motivates you in the class and challenges your way of thinking. Gives great examples to explain concepts. Many practical examples from his legal background. Really cool teacher and humorous.
He taught a Crim class this sem and is a relatively easy prof. But I wish he would use slides or record his lectures. He does get off-topic often, while trying to give us real-life examples. His knowledge of the content is great, since he's a lawyer. His tutorials are useless though, b/c he talks the whole time and there is no discussion in class
I like this professor and his style. He is a great lecturer. I found him very easy to understand. Great examples of concepts and always wants t make sure people understand before moving on to next subject area. Very funny and easy to talk to.
Lectures are the best and learned plenty in the course. Want him to teach more business courses. Also took the crim legal course he teaches. Fun teacher and good personality.
if you take bus law then try getting into his class-usually a wait list. He's really good.
Just finished taking his course & enjoyed it so much. Truly a good teacher and one who knows his stuff and makes the course really interesting.
loved his lectures. Very sharp and interesting to listen to. Fair exams and fair marking. Would definitely take him for any other courses he teaches.
Very good prof, but does not have a powerpoint or any notes.. he just speaks and you write the notes, which become a huge mess! He used his buisness text for our class and we did not have access to it, and his examed showed that we didnt have the same text. The midterm was easy but the final was extremely hard.
enjoyed his lectures, clear and interesting. used transperancies and gave us outlines before lectures. well prepared for lectures and fair.
I took his class last semester and really liked it. I agree his lectures are very good and he makes the course very interesting. I like his stories form hi work as a lawyer and how he relates it to the course work we discuss. Need more like him. I want to take the otehr course he teaches crim 135
I did not enjoy this class. At the beginning of the class we were provided rough outline for notes.Midterm was fine. However, after the midterm he didn't provide outlines and began teaching from a different text book that he didn't provide. Final was brutal (40% of your grade and only 40 marks)and many people did badly.
Best prof I've had so far at SFU. Nit too easy but great lectures. lazy students in the lectures will nit like him cause he will not spoon feed you but he makes you think and you learn alot. Respect the guy for making the course very interesting.
Great lecture for sure. He supplements text with lectures by examining cases and for me that is a home run. He is very smart and focused and clearly knows his stuff. enjoyed him lots.
You learn to think critically in his class. He makes you think and not just memorize. You learn to question things and he does a great job t make you understand concepts that a re difficult sometimee and does a great job. Loved his course.
I took commercial law with him last semester and liked him very much. Teaches with great examples and takes interest in making sure you understand. I am now taking another law course with him in Crim department and enjoy it lots
Awesome!! Makes a difficult course funa dn easy to understand.
I found the course not too difficult because the prof explained things very well. He is a good lecturer. I really enjoyed his style althouhg a couple of subject areas were a little dry for my taste but he made it fun.
Very enjoyable and helpful course for me. I want to start my own business eventually and this course gave me a good insight of some issues in the business world. I also liked the teacher and his style. madfe it fun and easy to understand. Lectures were great.
I had very good experience with the prof. Great lecturer for sure. Made things easy to understand and in addittion to keeping his on campus office hours, he also allowed us to call him at his law firm if necessary and during the exam period he gave us his cell phone number to call on the weekends if we had a question. That is definitely accessible
One of the few memorable teachers in my 4 years in business school. Gotta take him. It's an experience you'll enjoy. Not the easiest teacher but makes it easy to understand materials
Great prof, I highly recommend taking this class with him. He makes the material extremely interesting by using real life examples. I was in his tutorial section as well, really funny guy. Exams are fair, and there is one case presentation in tutorial. 40% midterm, 40% final, 20% tutorial participation/case presentation.
Very clear in explaining concepts; has a great sense of humor and is full of real life examples, which kept lectures interesting and fun; his exams were totally fair - there were zero surprises; and he really goes the extra mile to make sure concepts are understood before moving on. Highly recommend taking a course with him if you get the chance!
Finished the course last semester. By far one of the most memorable courses and teachers at SFU. Taught with lots of passion and very knowleadgeable. Liked personality too. You will have fun with his class and learn alot.
Good course! Great teacher. He was funny and humorous and great teaching style. Made things easy to understand. Will look to take any otehr course he teaches.
take his course as you will learn allot and enjoy it while doing it. He is very interesting, clear and fun to listen to. His classes get filled up fast. Very helpful in his off time from school when you call him at his law office
I have before taken law type courses and did not enjoy them as much as this course. The prof is really really good and gives good current examples of cases in the papers and news and one"s he does himself to explain difficult concepts. I really enjoyed course with this prof. I asked other froends who took course with him and had same good experienc
I took his commercial law course last semester. Liked it very much. Enjoyed his teaching method and decided to also take his criminology 135 course. His style is similar in that course although the materials are different. I would for sure recommend him.
Professor Bhalloo is a phenomenal educator and fascinating speaker that incorporates ample of experiences into his course. Questions welcomed & engagement encouraged. Beyond his role as a professor, he is willing to provide his legal opinion if ever needed it. I had a contractual issue & brought up the issue with him & he replied within minutes.
I never missed his classes because I really liked the lectures he gave. He was very clear in explaining things. He was always prepared very good teacher for sure. I would want to take another course with him for sure.
I enrolled in this class thinking it would basically be a read and regurgitate type. Shafik, however, does a great job of teaching textbook concepts by using real world examples which are often very entertaining and interesting. The exams are very fair. Study for them. Tutorials could have been a bit more participation oriented, however. A+
Great teacher. Really cares whether you understand the materials and will go the extra mile to help you understand.
A great prof for this course. The material is a bit dry but he will make it interesting with his personal stories. Encourages questions and participation. Recommend him to any Crim major for this course. Can't wait to take 393 with him!
If you want to learn commercial law and and enjoy learning it then this is your guy. I really enjoyed his class. He blends the theoretical stuff with his practical experience as a lawyer and this makes his course very enjoyable and you forget you are learning because you have fun going to his lectures.
I am his student this semeser and he is definitely one of the best profs I have had. Very clear and extremely interesting not to mention funny -in a good way-and entetaining in his teaching style. Great examples of cases he is involved in as a lawyer to explain concepts n the course....definitely recommend him.
It is really beyond description about how awesome he was while teaching summer course. He was really great! Exams were hard but as long as people do better on final exam than midterm, then he will definitely bump up our grades! TA Jordana was great!
found his lectures very clear, interesting and very helpful. He is honestly one of the best teachers I have had in the department . Relates to students well and his case examples and humor go a long way in making this course very fun. I give him 10 out of 10
ONE OF MY FAVORITE PROFS! I have so much respect for him, he is just a really good teacher, you learn so much from him! MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS; to do well you need to go to class & memorize the text. the avg for the mt was low but i thought it was easy..m/c for final was really hard, brought my mark down. Overall i liked him, got a B+
Shafik is a great professor. The course covers a lot of content but he focuses on what is relevant and uses his experiences as a lawyer. Each class was a pleasure to attend, thanks to his easy-going, funny and supportive attitude. Makes what could be a boring course very engaging and interesting. No tricks on exams.
If your taking Commercial Law you have to take it with this prof. Hes great at detailing the intricacies of the law and has some great stories that will help you remember they key points. Really enjoyable lectures.
Interesting and informative lectures by a well-traveled corporate lawyer. Shafik has great stories regarding his experiences in court and his dealings with clients. Exams and marking are very fair. Always available and eager to help, providing a phone number to reach him at his office.
You would be extremely lucky to have a class with Shafik. He will only compound your intrest for the course material thru a comprehensive, easy to follow, interesting way of relating the material. Hard work is necessary in order to receive a good grade, and speaking in class is highly recommended, but Shafik will make all this achievable!
Great prof! I had him this semester and found him by far to be the best teacher I have had. I thought he explained things very clearly and made the course extremely interesting. I attended every lecture which is rare for me. I would definitely take any other courses he teaches. He is also very helpful in guiding you with your group presentation
I had Shafik for the Fall 2011 semester and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the course overall because of his teaching. The course content is very broad, but Shafik presents the content in a way that makes it easy to understand. He is definitely passionate about the course content and it shows. Definitely recommend this course with him!
I had Shafik for the Fall 2011 semester. The course content itself is fairly broad, but Shafik presents the material in a way that makes it interesting and easy to understand. He is truly passionate about the course content and it shows in his teaching. If you're looking to take BUS 393, definitely recommend taking it with Shafik.
One of three best teachers I have had at Simon Fraser University. Took bus393 with him and loved his lectures. Gives wonderful relevant examples and great lecture style. You think you are having a conversation with him sometimes in lectures because he has an ease about him. I am taking a new course with him Bus 494-employment law this semester.
taking bus 494 with Shafik, after taking bus 393. so far I am really enjoying his class. similar style to bus393 which is great. Very clear and thorough in his lectures and allows us to participate in the class during the lectures. Class is full and I understand more wanted to get in. good teacher for sure
Had him for commercial law-bus 393 and enjoyed his class very much. Taking employment law with him-bus 494. Very good teacher. very helpful and knowledgeable. Very fun and makes the material easy to understand. Exams are not the easiest but very fair. If you study hard you will do very well
had him for commercial law-bus 393 and employment law-bus 494. He is a great teacher. Very fair, encourages and motivates you and makes the material very interesting so that you cannot but like the content. Treats you respectfully and makes learning very easy & casual. Good examples to make you understand concepts. Recommend him with two thumbs up.
I took 393 with him in spring last year. He is awesome. I like it when he gives you examples in terms you understand concepts. He makes the course fun. Definitely a memorable course for me. I am now talking bus303 -business ethics- with him. Had first class yesterday and it is the same approach . Should be lots of fun. Very interesting subject too.
I am having fun taking his course. Going to lectures is an experience. He makes it fun and easy to understand a complex subject with case examples from his work as a lawyer. I actually want to be a lawyer because of my interest in his course. Did not think I would like it but love it.
Great teacher! Two thumbs up
Shafik's a really nice guy and passionate about law. He always encourages people to talk to him. The course material itself, though, is pretty dry and there's about 30-40 pages of readings every week. As for grades, there's participation marks for participating in tutorials and a presentation with a partner.
interesting
Very good prof. Definitely one of very few who stands out in my years at University. It is my last year and I am going to take employment law with him too. He is very good. I love his lectures and he is fair and cares about you and wants you to do well.
Great prof. You can tell he's one of those profs who genuinely care about his students. The workload is not heavy, but there is a lot of information to memorize. As long as you try, then I think most people should be able to do fairly well. The syllabus consists of 1 midterm, 1 case presentation w/ a partner, and a final.
Shafik is a fantastic professor with great real-life examples that he uses to help emphasize his points. He's funny, down-to-earth and extremely knowledgable. I recommend him whole-heartedly!
Great prof!!! Definitely recommend his class. Funny guy, provides lots of real-life examples/easy-to-understand examples for the laws so you can easily relate to them. Very accessible for help.
GOOD PROF EVER
THE BEST PROF AT SFU!!! am glad i took this course with him. He makes you read/understand the things that will help u in ur business life. his exams are fair. Go to lecture its fun, helpful and entertaining!!. I wish he taught other courses in business!
He is honestly one of the best profs I have had as he explains things that are complicated in an easy way that iI was able to relate to. He makes the lecture fun to attend. I am now taking bus 303 bus ethics after finishing last semester Bus 393 commercial law. I think he is teaching employment law too but I have a time conflict. Thumbs up.
You learn alot in his class and yes he makes things simpler to understand. But not easiest. I would say fair for sure.
Treated students with respect and definitely very knowledgeable about the subject and very interesting. He was by far one of three professors I found excellent teachers in business school.
Such an amazing prof! He is definitely my favourite now. He is always so enthusiastic about his lectures and is super funny. He keeps his lectures light and enjoyable. Also, really friendly if you every need help or have a questions. Midterm and final were super easy if you studied. Deff recommended taking this class with him!
What can I say that hasn't been said already. Shafik is the bees knees and does everything in his power to ensure the success of his students. Lectures are great, memorize the crap out of the text in order to get top marks and kill the presentation. Don't forget to speak up in tutorial. Free 10 marks
His lectures are great. He is a very good teacher. The class is full and it feels like he is in the zone when he lectures. Great examples to make us understand readings in the course. Loved the guy.
hands down best prof at sfu. He knows his stuff and unlike the other professor at sfu, he is a great teacher. His examples are crystal clear and he makes the course interesting. I loved his lectures and his funny personality. Exams are fair
Shafik is an awesome person and professor - he breaks everything down to make it easy to understand, and he does everything in his power to make it easy for students to learn and to do well in his classes. Not to say he is "easy" per se, but he is beyond helpful and you will learn a lot from him. He is also hilarious, and his lectures are FUN.
He said if a student could get 10 points higher in the final, compared to the MT, he would pull his/her final a level up. He promised a second chance for final if you failed. 40% MT, 40% FN. GOOD LUCK
By far the best prof I have had at SFU. He knows how to teach and he is very interesting to listen to. Encourages you to participate in class and brings you real life examples to explain concepts so you understand. I want to now go to law school because he motivated me.
I think he is one of the most interesting and exciting profs I have had at SFU in Business school. His lectures are always full with students which is shocking for a a summer semester. Definitely passionate about law and makes a difficult subject easier to understand. I will take his employment law course next semester.
One of the best at SFU, must take one of his courses.
Amazing lectures. Love listening to this professor. He makes you understand with great examples and makes the lecture entertaining. You will learn lots in in his class and you will enjoy doing so. I took his class in business law 393 and decided to take business ethics 303 too.
He is one of the greatest profs I ever met. His lecture is clear and easy to follow. And the grading is pretty straight forward, 40% midterm and 60% final. This course is quite subjective and make sure you always have a good supporting reason for your decision.
Funny guy! His lectures are very interesting and he uses real-life cases as examples. Exams are fair, if you listened in class then you will be good!
hands down the best prof at SFU
Super prof. Very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Knows his stuff for sure and teaches the course in a manner that is fun and easy to understand. Definitely would take him again for a different course
LOVED this class. LOVE shafik! He explains concepts so well with real-life examples. His has an awesome sense of humour and is really kind to all his students. All you really have to do is show up to class to understand the material and then just study from his lecture notes and the textbook and you'll do fine :)
very interesting lectures. incorporates a lot of real life examples to help you understand the concepts.
Amazing prof ! One of the best at SFU ! Take his class, you will NEVER regret it !
Shafik is no doubt one of the most awesome professors at SFU. His lectures are always so entertaining with plenty of hilarious examples to help you remember the course material. I would definitely recommend him for BUS 393!
Great teacher especially since he is a practicing lawyer. Very entertaining lectures with a lot of great stories related to course material. 2 Non-cumulative exams, presentation, and tutorial presentation. Read the textbook and don't miss any details, and study from his lecture notes. Write as much as you can in the written section of exams.
He is very nice and always willing to help his students. Even though the concept is boring and sometimes comprehensive, he tries to make it clear with a lot of examples. Highly recommend to participating his classes and you will have a lot of fun. The exam is not difficult if you read the textbook.
My most interesting and fun class in SFU ever. Shafix is super hilarious, knowledgeable and nice. He wants his students to sit back and enjoy him teaching, so that he makes his lectures very enjoyable and meaningful (with a lot of real life stories and jokes.) Easy A for a 300 level course and a GPA booster for sure.
Great prof! Great lectures! Take both his classes - commercial law and business ethics. You will have a great time learning lots but have fun at the same time. Makes the hard materials much easier to understand. The books in the courses are okay but lectures make the materials easier to understand.
My Best PROF in SFU 3
He is HILARIOUS! Amazing sense of humour! Gives lots of real life examples that explains the topics covered better than the textbook! His exams are fair! Take Bus 393 or Bus 303 with Shafik, you will not regret it! You need to read the textbook but he tries to reduce the amounts of readings. Very knowledgeable professor.
One of the best professors I have had at SFU. He uses a lot of real-life examples in class, which makes the material a lot easier to understand. Tests are fair. Go to class, do your readings, and you're guaranteed a good mark.
Shafik is simply brilliant. His passion for law is inspiring and goes to show how if you truly love what you do for a living, you will never have to work a day in your life. This man is a King and definitely lives like one lol!
Great lectures by this prof. He is very good and breaks things down to make you better understand materials. He gives great examples. Would love to have more like him.
Shafik is a really nice and funny guy. His lectures are always interesting and make you want to attend them. His mid-term and final are fairly easy (except multiple choices questions are a little bit harder). He is also extremely helpful and is always there for you. Overall, I will highly recommend anyone to take his courses (any courses).
Great lecture by this prof. He is really good at what he does and makes the subject very interesting for you. He really cares about his students and teaching. He will not let you give up in the course. I feel I got so much in the course.
Very good lecturer and very smart. Love his lectures. He brings lots of energy to class. Gives great examples which helps you understand concepts that may be difficult to understand at times. He loves participation and people really participate in his class. Do not text or leave your cell in his class or you will be gone
Rocks!!!!! I love this guy. He can teach alright. Super interesting. Very energetic. In a large class of almost 100 students he makes you feel like you are the only student he is talking to. He remembers you and gets you to participate very easily. He makes things easy for you so that the hard stuff is not so hard with examples he gives.
One of the best prof I have ever taken class with.
Shafik is aweso0me!! His commitment to the class is beyond impressive. He is so dedicated to helping you no matter what. His lectures are great, gives real life examples about his work and makes sure you understand the concept. If not, you can access him for help anytime during the day. I will definitely look out for his other classes.
Hard exam and hard grading scheme
Boring class. And hard exam.
One of 4 courses I took this semester and he was the best teacher. His lectures are really excellent and I attended all. I learned most in his class and he made hard stuff very easy to understand. Always provides real life examples. Best lecturer for sure. I see lazy people who get bad grades will not want to take his class.
he is so awesomely good. I had trouble to get into his class last semester and got in summer semester but it was worth it. he was always prepared and very respectful even to students that asked dum questions. very good teacher and super dupper lectures for sure.
His class was amazing. I really learned some valuable information. To do well, attend lecture, read the chapters at least once, and know the lecture notes inside and out.
Best class this year. I read review here and its correct that he is really good.
He's very good prof!!!!
One of the best profs I've ever had. Lectures are entertaining b/c he uses real-life examples for everything as he is a lawyer himself. Pinpoints important parts for his exams and what to study. No surprises on exams. Very easy.
He is a hilarious prof! His real-life ex make learning the material so easy. His MT was relatively easy (average 80%). The final was harder & longer (only gave us 1hr50m) hes ALWAYS available (24/7). He also only goes through like half the textbook (mandatory).
Totally the best prof in I have had in the last 2 yrs. Exams are fair but final was more difficult compared to midterm. Lecture are really good and he is super duper interesting. he's cute too!
One of the most charismatic teachers I have ever had. He uses real life experiences to illustrate his point. He speaks TO you, not AT you. Lectures were very interesting and apply to work. Highly recommend Shafik as a teacher.
I had an excellent semester with him. he was kind and very helpful and he explained things so well with examples. He is my favourite teacher
Shafik is an amazing professor. He is always energetic and makes jokes to make his lectures more interesting.
Totally awesome teacher. Learned so much with him. His lectures were so relevant with so many examples. Always prepared for lectures and just awsome lectures
I too 393 and 303 with him and found him equally excellent in both classes. He is very clear and like all here his examples are very good. If you did not do well it is because you are lazy or not smart. He goes out of his way to help you. Excellent teach for sure.
I am taking 303 and 393 with him this semester and I like his style so very much. he is very interesting and his lecture are excellent. do not take a cell phone to his class or you will get in trouble. I learned so much with him and he makes the class fun.
Excellent teacher. Very helpful when you ask for help and will give you second chance if you screw up at midterm. Very fair marker . Lectures are super good. Have to be lazy in this class to do poorly.
He is one of my favourite professors at SFU. He put effort in every lecture that he taught. His lectures were interesting and fun to listen to. He made good use of his real life experience. I do recommend taking this class with him cause nobody else can do it better.
He's hilarious. By far the best professor I have had at SFU. His lectures are mandatory, but they are more like a show than a lecture as he tells you to sit back and watch.
Totally awesome prof. I find his lectures very informative and so much practical info. It helps being able to lecture like he does. He is an excellent story teller and tons of examples to make you understand materials. Definitely most interesting class I have had.
Clear expectations and always accessible if you need clarification on class materials. Quite a bit of reading but not impossible to manage. The topics discussed are highly useful in the work environment. No surprises on the exam but do require you to really understand the materials. Lectures are funny with lot of stories, so you won't get bored
Even when it's a crappy day, I never want to miss his lecture. He connects theories with his real life experiences, and you just never want to miss even one of his classes. I made a mistake not taking 303 with him. He cares a lot about his students, and is always accessible for help! Best prof ever.
I laughed, I cried, I laughed again. That has nothing to do with the class, I'm just bipolar. Shafik is terrific, his skill at making a point clear through his stories is awesome. He made sure to get to know almost everyone and we all felt more involved because of it.
Great professor. Very intriguing lectures and teaches the material well so that you understand it. Stand up guy! Marking criteria is clear and marks wise he is very generous but beware of the curve since it is so high. All in all would take any course with him again.
303 is pretty straightforward. Teaching style is relaxed and friendly. Is always super open to students reaching out to him for questions. Pretty subjective class. 80% average on MT and 80% on assignment. Hard to get a high mark due to high curve.
Heard that ethics is confusing and hard to get good grades before taking. However, Shafik does his best to make the class so straightforward and easy to follow. No need to read the book as his lecture notes included everything. It is good to attend classes to clarify confusions and listen to his examples. One of my best prof at SFU :)
He explains the concepts very clearly and gives many examples to make sure students understand. The tests are a bit long, so you need to be quick. One of my best prof every :)
Very smart teacher. Was very clear in lectures and gave lots of real world examples to explain things. He was very fair to students and unlike some of my teachers, very respectful and treated us like we mattered. He actually remembers our names in the large classes when we participate. Awesome teacher. Taking 303 with him next semester.
He makes everything very simple and straightforward. 1 midterm, 1 group assignment, 1 final with SAME FORMAT! He explains the theories over and over + also breaks down structure of assignments with crystal clarity. If you didn't get a high mark in this class, then something's wrong with you not him. I couldn't have asked for a better prof for 303.
Taking both his courses this semester: business 393 commercial law and business 303 ethics. He is the best prof to take in both courses but it is difficult to get into his class. I got in last minute when the department opened the course and allowed some of the people on his huge waitlist to register. You have to take him.
Took his commercial law bus 393. Hewas just great. He made a difficult subject so easy to understand. He used examples students can relate to which made it really good. He is the best teacher I have taken in Beedie. Tried getting into his bus303 but it had a long waitlist and I hope to get in during summer. Taking his bus 483 employment law also
I like shafik because his lectures are very clear and he knows what he is talking about. Gives real world examples to make his point. He makes boring stuff exciting. He is honestly interested interested in making students comfortable and encourages us to participate in class. In the 3 years at school, I have to say he is the best prof I have had.
Took bus 303 class. Excellent teacher. Could not get in his law class 393. there was long waitlist and I could not get in. Will try again in the fall. He is my choice.
If you take commercial law or ethics course, hands down you have to do it with SHafik. He is da best. His lectures and style of teaching is great. He talks to you in lectures like you are involved in the class and his examples are crystal clear.
Best teacher at the Business school in my 4.5 years. I am going to do MBA and I wish we had teachers like him there. He knows his stuff so well and his classes are amazing. I took him for commercial law class, businEST ethics and now Employment Law. He is so interesting and passionate about the stuff he teaches. Big waitlists for his classes.
His lectures are interesting and based on good examples and experience. But his slides are very busy and assignments and tests require a LOT of attention to detail. You need to review a reasonable amount and communicate with TA about your group project early and often; high marks are achievable with this in mind
I have him for commercial law bus 393this semester and he is a great prof. You learn so much from him and he is definitely passionate about his teaching. It is good that he is a lawyer and gives great examples. I think he I sent very clear and I love his lectures. He involves you in examples and I am looking to take bus 483 with him
I agree he is really good. I find him very easy and clear to understand. Many examples he gives. Usually examples you can relate and understand. Very helpful also and he honestly wants you to do well and is always available to assist. He is my favorite teacher in the Business school.
I took Shafiks bus233 class in Business Law and ethics. I Really enjoyed his class. He made the subject very interesting. I like his style. Many excellent examples and very clear. I have decided to take a minor in business because of this class. I think he is very caring and really excellent prof.
He was a really great and straight forward professor. He clearly outlined what would be on midterm and final. He gave a practice midterm and some of the same questions were on his actual midterm! However, he talks way too much and the class became such a drag at times. I never showed up to lecture, because he did send out slides!
Very very good. Professor. Top 1% of teachers in the department. I learned sooo much in his course. Yes, law was exciting. Never thought I would say it. I never missed a single lecture.
Exam is tomorrow. He was available to take my question on Sunday and call me back. Thisbis service. I find lectures so unteresting. He is definitely very clear and makes materials very interesting. I never skip his classes. He is also very fair based on midterm. He wants you to do very well and will help you if you want to work hard. Great teacher.
as a practicing lawyer, he brings a lot of knowledge and passion to each class with relevant and current examples. great discussions and participation was encouraged. he was always available even when he was working from the law firm and sometimes even on weekends. First semester this course was offered, course load was light - highly recommend
Awesome teacher. I would take him again. Very knowledgeable about his stuff and very interesting. Learned so much and enjoyed every class
he is my best prof in business. I took both bus393 and 303 with him. His lectures are great and he is clear and very fair. I am waitng to take bus483 wih him when he teaches again. Obviously I would take him again.
Shafik is the best prof I've ever had. Sometimes he rambled on a bit long about some subjects, but overall was a great lecturer, very knowledgable with funny stories. If you show up to class you do not need to read the textbooks, he provides detailed notes. Some of the MC on Midterm were identical to Qs on the practice exam he gives.
Shafik is awesome! He cares so much about his students and is super accessible. Half the course is based on law, which I think he did a better job of teaching - made it super interesting by bringing in real world examples. The ethics part was bearable. Fair exams. Would love to take a class with him again!
Phenomenal! I took him in buss393 business law and bus 303 business eithics and then bus483. Consistently excellent prof. Called him at his law office for help and he spent 15 mnts on the phone explaining stuff to me. Super knowledgeable about what he teaches. Would give him 2 thumbs up. If you have a choice go with him and hell not dissapoint you
Shafik is a very engaging prof. who keeps lectures interesting by telling stories related to course material. Course content is quite easy, work load is light, and you can get by just using lecture notes. Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended as his lectures really help you to understand the material. Great prof. highly recommend.
I have Shafik this semester in BUS393. He is an excellent prof. Do not miss his lectures. He is very good at explaining things. He is a great story teller with legal cases he has worked on to explain concepts to us. Learning with him is very fun. I really like him. If you have a choice go with him and you will see.
Shafik is an awesome professor. He's an amazing lecturer and funny, I really like how he used real world examples. I actually wanted to come to lecture LOOL. Midterm average was around 75%. Textbook is useless. Short answer on the midterm and final is marked harshly. Use of the right terminology is crucial to the short answer section.
Agree with the last comment. Shafik is amazing prof. You cannot miss his great lectures in the bus 393 commercial Law class. He involves students in examples in class. He makes it easier for you to understand material and I found his tests fair both midterm and final. He is also very funny and smart. I am in his bus 303- ethics class this summer
Shafik is a great, caring guy. Engaging lectures. The class has gotten harder and isn't as easy to do well in. You're expected to answer beyond what questions are actually asking you to do. Tough to get feedback/explanations from TAs as their answers are akin to "ehh sorry, tough luck".
Shafiks the best teacher I have had at sfu. I never miss his lectures ever ever. I wish the class was not at 8:30 in the morning but I have always made it as he makes the course so very interesting and fun. You learn so much and participate . I think his midterm was very fair. I am in both his bus303 ethics class also and he is consistently good.
I like Shafiks lecture, never skip one class and understand the basic concepts of bus 303. The grade is straight forward, one midterm and one final assignment, same format, very similar to the example midterm. Practice and ask him. Be free to provide own experience to him at last question. But the average is high, got 82%, and maybe around median
I had prof Bhalloo in the summer for both bus 303 and 393 in the summer session. I thought he was excellent and consistently great lectures in both classes. I have not seen him teach bus 483 recently but would love to take it when he teaches. He is very good. If you can get in his class good luck as always waitlists.
Shafiks a nice guy and cares about his class however his refusal to use Capilano U's Moodle class portal makes for serious confusion about due dates and where to find assignments. Digging through countless emails about his kids' Saturday activities to find assignments is driving our class bananas. Takes far too long going through notes in lecture.
He is an excellent teacher when it comes to explaining legal concepts with examples you can relate to. He is very available to students. He makes lectures so much fun. He called me back on thebwerkend when I needed help. Waitlists for his class are long.
Of the teachers I have had, he is no doubt one of the best. He is a lawyer who knows how to speak very well and explain things with examples so that you do not get lost in class. He always asks you if you understand and rarely when you do not he will give more examples and makes sure he does not leave you behind. I wish more were like him.
Amazing lectures. He is excellent and easy to listen to and super smart. Knows his stuff. Had him in commercial law and then in business ethics course last summer. Would take any of his classes as he is my favourite prof at SFU Beedie. Very approachable and always available to you. Treats you like a human being.
Completed midterm exam last night in bus 393- business law with prof. Shafiq. His lectures are amazing. Really! You learn way more from him than the text book. He uses real world examples to make things easier to understand and he does it in a way you understand clearly. The midterm exam was very fair and No surprises if you attended lectures.
Shafik is one of the most committed professors I have had, he makes sure he is available for his students whenever they need it. He spoke to me on the phone for 40 minutes on a Sunday while he was at his law firm to help me feel more prepared by answering questions I had about our midterm. He truly cares, and is a prof cap is lucky to have.
I had prof Shafiq for bus 303 and enjoyed it so much that I have him for BUS393. He make law and ethics very easy to understand and he has really good example to break things down in bite sizes to make you understand. His lectures are really good. I am there at 8:30 in the morning. Not many classes in the last 3 years I have woken up for at 8:30
Super duper guy. His lectures are really really good. He tells stories to explain difficult concepts Andy uses examples you can relate to in your own life which makes it understanle. He loves participation and will remember your name if you participate and use you in his examples. I am surprised he remembered my name in a class of 90 students.
Loved Shafik, he is so great! He is very interesting to listen to since he has lots of passion for law and brings up hilarious examples in class to relate to the concepts he is teaching. Very easy to sit through the lectures because they are super entertaining, don't skip them tho he tests on what he covers in class. Never opened the book
Amazing prof, never missed lecture! Love the way he teaches, everything just sticks with you when you are studying for exams. He has a strict no cell phone rule but overall a really funny and inspiring prof! If your taking 393, take it with him he's the best!
Best professor at SFU by a mile. Shafik is engaging and makes the material so interesting to the point where it excites you to go to lectures and learn. Would highly recommend taking any class with the GOAT.
I took CRIM 1116 at Langara with Shafik and he was my favourite teacher because he was hilarious and taught the material effectively. The two downsides are he isn't approachable when you don't get something ,which effected my final exam mark and would've gotten it right had he explained it, and his exams are short but he tries to trick you in them.
Best teacher I have had at SFU by a mile and a half. I wish I had taken him in Bus 303 because his bus 393 class rocked. He is really good.
Amazing lectures, easy to understand, always prepared and very engaging. I will take him again in ethics course business 303. I wish he would soon teach employment Law course. My friend took his employment course and said he was excellent.
Shafiq is an ecellent prof. Very caring and smart. I took his business ethics class and found him very good at explaning difficult concepts with examples. Fair marker. He loves people participating and very good at getting people to participate. Very respectful. I am taking bus 393 with him in the fall. Just got in his class. Was on waitlist.
One of the best professor I have had at SFU. Great entertaining lectures. Read the book to get the harder questions on the exam.
BEST PROF EVER! Took 393 with him never really studied just went to lecture and took notes, he gives really good examples so you don't really need to study hard for the midterm or final! But all his classes have really big waitlists which sucks! Really wanted to take 303 with him but the waitlist was all filled up. Wish he taught more classes
Taking business ethics and also business law with him at SFU. His classes are always full, even the early morning one on Tuesday at 8:30 . He comes very prepared to perform. He is very good and has a way of making material interesting and enjoyable with real examples. He is always available to help, even okay taking calls at his office.
Best prof I have had at Beedie, hands down. Waiting for the fall semester to have his other course in ethics. Will also take his employment Law course when he teaches.
Good teacher but lectures are a bit on the longer side sometimes. He could give a longer break in the class. Examples are very good but some examples a bit too long
Shafiq clearly loves law by the passion he shows in his lecture. Attending his lectures is like going to theatre and you get a performance. It is like being entertained while you are learning and it is painless:) he is very good. One of my favourite teachers 4 sure.
Amazing prof. You'll actually enjoy going to class. I dare you to sit in the front;) haha. Just study examples and terms, you'll do fine. :)
I am there at 8:30 a.m. for his class, and on Fridays yeah! I love this prof. His classes are great. He involves you in lectures when he gives examples. Makes things crystal clear. Need more like him. Good luck getting in his class. I waited to get in his class now for 2 semesters and finally
Shafik is by far one of my favourite teachers. He is always accessible and wants you to succeed in every way possible. He focuses on teaching until the whole class understands. This means he will never rush his lectures and will dedicate 3 to sometimes 4 classes for one chapter. Make sure to take Shafik if you ever get the opportunity.
the guy starts talking shop the moment you ask a question
Like Shafiq as my teacher very much. His lectures are excellent. Never miss them. He gives lots of examples and he relates the material to stuff we can understand. We finished midterm exam and unlike some teachers he covers only stuff we have covered in class in exam and marks were very fair. He will call you back on weekends if you have questions
Great adaptation for the online style. Great care for the students. Great life stories.
Shafik has easily become one of my top favourite instructors on my 2 years in SFU. Hes kind , hilarious and truly I MEAN TRULY cares for his students. Hes passionate about his work and it shows in class. by the writing of this I have not received my grade, so this is my unbiased opinion . If youre even slightly interested in bus law I recomd it
Shafik is an amazing prof. He is always accessible outside classroom and he gives 120% respect to everyone. Shafik will also try his best to answer every single question you ask and he will never rush for materials. My only comment is: Please go for him with this course because you will take more than you expected.
Shafik is one of my all-time favourite profs at SFU. He is super understanding, and accommodates his teaching style for the benefit of his students, especially in online school. He is accessible outside of class time and will make sure topics are completely understood. Lectures are fun, participation helps, and you won't even want to skip class!
Shafik is excellent at explaining concepts in a clear and concise manner, as well as keeping lectures engaging. He is very clear when it comes to his expectations, so as long as you put an effort in you will end up with a good grade. He is dedicated and a good example of what students wish all profs could be like.
Shafik Bhalla was one of the best profs I had. His lectures are worth attending, and they are not boring at all. His style of teaching is very good and the main thing. When you write him an email about anything and if you mention your cell number, this guy CALLS YOU back within 2 hours. His exams are not that difficult tbh.
I absolutely loved his Crim 1116 ,. It is clear he loves teaching and cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Having access to the lectures online is so helpful, and I really appreciate his exams; they are precisely what he teaches. You can get a good grade if you study his slides, listen to his lectures and attend checkin classes.
I was a little scared of taking this course but I had Shafiq for Bus Law An day loved it. What made this course excellently was his style of teaching and also his examples and how he interacted with us in class. Ed is re spectrum Andy very fair but also kind
Very good teacher! Would take any class with him again for sure. I had him for bus 233 and he was extremely understanding and good!
Shafik Bhalloo is a very caring prof and loves what he teaches. He provides loads of his own time if you choose to contact him. being available during most week days as well as some weekends.
Funny guy and genuinely a good prof. Definitely recommend.
I like his style of teaching business ethics. I took both bus law and bus ethics with him and I. Both classes he was consistent. Very clear and easy to understand. I think the final was a bit difficult but he marked it very fairly . He genuinely wants you to succeed in class and is always available for help. My favourite teacher at Beedie
Shafik was a great prof that explained concepts clearly and did a really good job enforcing your learning. He covered topics in a fashion that keeps people entertained and interested. I really enjoyed his class!! There was no homework other than 1 group project (+ 1 midterm and 1 final), which means the workload is light (and they aren't hard too).
One of the best profs i met ! Very genuine, really helpful and his classes are very interesting and interactive! He mostly gives real life examples which would really really help any student to understand the concepts better! Really fair with marking!
I thought employment law course for business in MBA/MOT program would be dry but somewhat relevant. It turned out to be the most interesting of my courses and very relevant and informative. Shafiq is a great prof. He is a practicing lawyer and, like most reviews here say, he brings his legal experience in the classroom and makes it exciting for all
I took Bus 303 this semester with professor bhalloo and honestly all of the reviews on here are very accurate. I am not a morning person but still found myself attending his Friday morning lectures. He is super funny, approachable and uses real life scenarios to make the course engaging. 1 midterm, 1 final and a group project!
Shafik is the GOAT
Best professor in Beedie.
Great professor, always open to help.
One of the best profs I've ever had. His grading scheme and exams are fair and he is good at getting students to understand the material. He's hilarious and it makes going to lecture way more enjoyable. He is very helpful and he really cares about his students and wants to them succeed. Very cool dude and very inspiring.
It felt really good to know how much he cares about his students. One of the best Professors I've had at SFU! he's also very interesting and tries his best to answer all your questions. There aren't a lot of thing to do (3- midterm, assignment, final) all worth 30% so you'll need to do well on all to get a good mark but its most definitely doable
The professor i came across as an international student in canada. He cares for students and has a good sense of humour. I took this course bcoz i have intrest in law and the lectures were so intresting. Highly recommended without a doubt he is the best and knowledgeable.
As a non-business major this has been my favourite class I have ever taken in my 3 years at SFU. Shafik is a rare prof. who is a combination of humour, genuinely has care for his students, and thoroughly teaches content with clarity. He is the most fair prof. I've had and if you ever get a chance to take a class with him, you'll forever cherish it.
I would highly recommend Shafik. He has clear grading criteria, encourages participation, and makes lectures interesting. His midterm exam is extremely fair, and if you miss a lecture he provides lecture recordings on canvas. The papers are pretty easy and there isn't much work you have to do outside of class.
Amazing prof. he is one of the best profs at SFU.
Best professor I've had so far. Attend lectures and you'll understand why. 10/10 would recommend.
Easily the best prof I've ever had. Despite long lectures, it was super easy to engage and understand topics with him using unique stories and examples. He also had practical real-world experiences and stories which was super cool to hear. Studying for the midterm was relatively easy because of this although it is somewhat tricky but rewarding.
The best professor I've had at SFU. He's a great lecturer and explains the material through real life examples which makes it so much easier to learn. I highly recommend attending his lectures!
Shafik is the best professor for the Bus393 Commercial Law course. He's been very supportive throughout the semester and the way he keeps everyone involved in the class is excellent and laudable. I'd highly suggest everyone to take this course with him.
Shafik has been one of the best professors I've had at SFU. I highly recommended attending his lectures as the concepts are explained in depth with many examples. He often engages the class to participate and give their opinions on the subject matter. The exams were fair and tested on material covered throughout the slides.
Shafik is hands down the best professor at SFU Beedie! He is funny, caring, and engaging. Shafik conveys lecture material clearly and supports the concepts with real life examples. Lectures are intriguing and he always encourages participation. Exams are based on concepts and examples covered in class. Take BUS393 with Shafik, you won't regret it!
I found the prof very engaging and extremely knowledgeable. I am not sure about the student in the review below but I found him very respectful and fair and very approachable. In fact he was my best prof last year. I thought the marking was very fair too. I am actually taking his other course this semester and so far very consistent
Best SFU prof ever ! would recommend to anyone who wants to learn and enjoy school! He is hilarious, and great at teaching. You can tell he cares, which is rare to find in a prof. I never write reviews but he is honestly a rare prof, as half the profs at SFU don't care.
Truly the best prof at SFU. Shafik actually cares about your wellbeing and ensures that his class is fair. The topics were so interesting and Shafik's humour made 3 hours feel like nothing. I actually was sad when class was over. Best class I've ever taken.
Amazing professor, hands down one of the best professors at SFU. He is caring and engaging, I actually learnt stuff in his class as opposed to other profs who might have a very qualified degree but know nothing in their discipline.
He is super amazing. He is the best prof I have had at SFU sp far, and I would love to take his class in the future.
Good lectures and funny prof, but be warned; he is ideologically possessed, very old school, rude when you talk to him or approach for questions. Take James Pflanz instead, at least he doesn't yell at me over the phone when i request office hours.
Super engaging and funny lectures. For the law assignment, he gives you a sample you can follow. For the ethics exam, he guides you on how to approach the questions that will be on the final. He also posts slides and lecture recordings. However, think before asking him for help. He doesn't like it if you email him late at night.
Loved the content of the class, and the mark I got was not bad. the issue here is the prof. extremely rude, ill mannered, and finds joy out of embarrassing his students. he should have some shame. dont ever book a phone call w him- he will use that time to degrade you
He is a good proffesor and there is absolutely no doubt about this. He knows his stuff very well, uses different examples from the class to explain the stuff. The average for the course is so high. If I would get a chance to do this course again, I wont do with him at all so that I can get a better grade! If you want an A, dont take with him.
Engaging lectures and useful guidance from the prof. For study prep, ChatGPT and unstuckstudy ai were super helpful alongside the free course materials. Overall, a rewarding experience.
There really isn't anything to study in this course. Getting an B+/A- is incredibly easy, but doing any better than that seems impossible because of the curve. He has a dry sense of humour, which is at times funny, and other times rude.
Shafik is a great prof! He is a funny guy and teaches well. Exams are fair as well, just wish you're not on his bad books and don't get bullied every lecture.
Shafik = Lebron
Shafik made lectures enjoyable. His exams are also very fair. The group project could use more structure/instructions. Will make plenty of jokes which I loved (not for the easily offended). Teaches using examples, which is how you will be evaluated. Will take more courses with him even though I don't need to.
This guy is the goat. He made fun of the kid beside me all year and it made my day
There are easier professors for this class.. for the sake of yourself, avoid him.
I have taken two courses with Shafik so far (BUS 233 and BUS393) both of which have been incredible. He is such an amazing prof with his humour, real life examples to connect to lectures, and stories from his career being a lawyer. I hope to take couple more courses with him for sure. There is a reason his classes fill up so fast and get full!
Excellent! Best in my three years at BEEDIE. Knows the material well. Using his book on the subject which has some great study materials. Love his Friday classes. He is very entertaining when teaching. Love his classes. He does not suffer lazy students and those using cellphones in his class. Taking employment law with him now
Took BUS 303 with Shafik this semester. Grading criteria is unclear. He is arrogant and egotistical and does not hide it one bit. He always drifts off to random subjects, which is useless for students. So many examples taught in class were no use for studying. People recommend Shafik, but take it with anyone else, it's not a hard subject.
By far the best teacher I have come across. It is such a pleasure to be in his class. He makes the environment extremely fun to learn in, and he truly cares about seeing everyone succeed! I would 100% recommend taking his class.
He is a lawyer who teaches this course and so very well. I hate early morning classes but his I looked forward to. He make a subject that is so dry very “sexy” and exciting with real world examples from his experience. I love that he gives context and then hypotheticals that we can relate to. I am really thinking of going into law.
Best course, best teacher at Beedie School. The class is One of the most exciting classes I have taken with this teacher. He makes the subject exciting and gets all of us involved in participating and critically analyzing cases and subjects. He does it in a way that is very inviting and fun. I love his classes. Class is always full.
Taken 2 classes with him 393 & 303. Hands down, great prof. Super consistent, always prepared, & makes the material make sense. He doesn't just read off slides. Used tons of real-life examples. Also really funny, keeps the class from ever getting boring. But heads up — don't use your phone in his class.
Had him in BUS 303 B4, and took him for law too. He's a great prof, and I study for 3 hrs the morning of the exam and it's a breeze. Avgs are high tho, making it competitive to do well. Just get perfect on the tutorial, highest mark on the prez, and hopefully get above curve on the exam to secure the bag. Course is good w/ other tough quant classes
Buddies a demon
Shafik's lectures are super interesting and he gives lots of good examples that stick with you for the exams (so you should attend lecture). The class is fairly easy with a light workload for a 300-level class but the tradeoff is high a average so you have to score high to get above the curve. Shafik was awesome and hope I can have him again.
Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! He is the only prof that I don't want him to end the lecture early! The course has a tight curve so the final exam determines everything. Concepts are mostly discussed during class and he *will* test you on the final (e.g. Meiorin test, substratum doctrine). Know the presentation cases as well, they are testable.
Shafik is great! Pretty easy class, just study lecture/tutorial slides, do any practice exams provided and you'll do fine.
Good prof; the course content is hard, and you need to spend lots of time to memorize and understand how to apply it to the various cases. Our TA Blake is the best I've met so far during so many courses, highly recommend him to be your TA!!!!
