Avoid this class if at all possible. Lectures are boring and entirely unclear.
nice man, no textbook so kind of confusing, but he really wants to help when you ask for it
he's a very nice man..means well...but incredibly hard to figure out what he wants...everyone bombed first test
very long boring lectures. Same exact class everyday just new civilization. 2 page papers due every 2 weeks. moderate hw amount. So much material that tests are hard. Sometimes takes attendence
Dr.Hanifi is such a nice guy! Topics are very random, but it's not that bad. You'll have to take alot of notes in class VERY quickly. Tests are hard, and don't really reflect the reading, more the class notes. Very little work out of class. Great guy!
He's a nice guy and will really help you out if you go to him. His lectures are boring though ad you really have to take notes and fast. If you study hard and keep up with notes and reading you should be ok.
A very intelligent and caring professor...but there is a ton of information and it is covered VERY QUICKLY. Must be on top of things to succeed: this includes reading, attendance, notetaking, studying, etc.
Very caring teacher, but lectures are completely random and its easy to get lost. Lectures sometimes boring and the tests are very hard.
Very intelligent man but the content of the class is hard to handle. You will have to learn a whole new vocabulary. Good luck on his tests, I sure didn't have any.
Lectures are hard to follow and tests are difficult.
Dr. Hanifi is a chill dude but his class is pretty hard but its whatever
Class is boring and VERY HARD, he just rambles on, test don't reflect readings only somewhat on class notes, MUST take good notes to succeed, he is hard to understand at times
He is a very nice man but it is a hard class...don't take it...i wouldn't of taken it if I would of knew what it was going to be like!
Run as fast as you can! Worst teacher ever! Lectures are ridiculous and he just rambles on about nothing that will be on your test. I know no one who got above a D on any test.
Hardest class ever. Nicest guy but talks about nothing you are tested on. Knows about Islam but is a lil unclear about other areas. Tests are hard and random. Lectures are random. RUN RUN RUN. Wants you to do well but makes it hard for you to do well
One of the nicest guys I have ever met. Unfortunately he spits info out at an incredible rate, you have to furiously take notes, and the tests are incredibly hard. He is interesting if you pay close attention, but if you don't you will be lost.
At first I was real worried about this classs. But, if you go to class, take good notes on the vocab and study then you'll do fine. Hanifi will honestly help you with whatever you need. He's willing to make his schedule fit with yours.
He's really a nice guys and gets a bad rap for hard tests...the tests arent so hard if u read the selections, and if you have problems he will really help
nice guy but the lectures are boring and hard to follow. doesn't encourage or really entertain questions or discussion so it is straight lecture. names and places sound and look the same but he doesnt clarify. tests are very hard.
THis class is complete lecture. So, no day dreaming, or you'll completely miss something. But, study the Vocabulary and read and you should be ok. Ask for help if you need help. He's teacher's assistant will help you as well. They're both really nice guys
he is a really great professor.people think his tests are hard, but if you go to the review sessions brian (coolest t/a ever!) will help u out with anything so u will do fine. even if u miss something in class, brian will help u out with whatever u miss.
Lectures are hard to follow at times but its nothing that can't be cleared up by talking to him or to his TA. Study sessions are helpful but study the vocab and readings. The tests are tough but I'm not a good test taker and I got a B on the last one.
Really hard class. Very understanding, helps you out if you search for the help...but I wouldn't recommend the class. Lectures full time, seeks no student imput.
in all honesty ... do you want a teacher that is really nice to you or someone who can teach ... i really wouldn't recommend this class ... i think this was his first year teaching but stilllllll ... class was unbearable .. for me anyways
This class is a great class..if you like history.I'm a history major and I love this class, but if you are not a history major or have little interest in it, you may want to find something else.If you do like history then I highly recommend it, I had fun.
really nice guy, but kind of a difficult teacher. i felt like i never was clear on what he wanted me to know,(except Arabic!) modern mid east is not so modern (we didn't even get to Huesseing) just as a warning to those interested in current affairs.
tends to speak over you, lectures the full time. his directions on assignments are very ambigous and vague. tests are hard, but he is fair adn curves when needed.
blah!!!
cool guy, totally passionate & knowlegeable about middle east. lectures the whole time, take notes! exams are rough, especially with the arabic words and stuff, lots of memorization necessary.
Easiest history class...Go to review sessions and you will get an A.
Great guy, pretty easy grader, but he's pretty ambiguous in everything he does. Regardless, he's extremely patient and very knowledgable. If you come to class, and organize your studying around the key terms, everything will fall together.
You gotta study and go to class but its not so bad. I think hes hot but thats just me. Go to class to learn, I always felt much smarter after I left that class.
VERY boring, but he sure knows his history. You can tell he thinks hes better than everyone, has a snobbish attitude. Dont take unless you want to sit and daydream every other day.
He is very kind and helpful, tests not that hard, a lot of reading, goes off subject at times which makes it complicating to take notes. Easy project, curves like no other!! challenging class, very knowledgable
Such an easy class. The test are basically common sense, not to bad. I barely ever read for this class but got an A. If you do the work and a little reading you should be fine. Tends to be boring though, only bad thing.
Dr. Hanifi is my bro. Easiest A I have ever gotten. All you have to do is read the intros to the readings to pass the quizes and study for an hour to get A's on the tests. Doesn't know much about leanfest though.
Like the rater prior to me I agree. Dr. Hanifi does not know much about Leanfest 04, but I have talked with him and he is contemplating a reunion tour in 05 for this big event. Overall Dr. Hanifi is a really great teacher, nice person, and quite funny!
not too bad of a teacher, tests are fairly simple and he's a very very nice man.the way he anunciates every word will get to you but other than that, he's ok
He definitely knows his history, but is not opposed at all to other students opinions. Tests and quizs are fairly easy and straightforward
He is kinda hot actually...
Dr. Hanifi is awesome! His class can be kinda boring and he talks...really..slowly, but other than that, he's cool and more than willing to help out. Go by his office hours!
Great teacher. One of the nicest professors you will ever have. Tests and quizzes are very easy as long as you study. Easy A as long as you go to class.
Hanifi is all over the place in lectures. I feel like I haven't learned much about History b/c his teaching is often hard to follow. He is one of the nicest professors I've ever had, and his teaching assistant is very helpful. Tests and quizes are a sinch. Novels are interesting..esp Kite Runner
It can be a lot of work but take this class. Nicest guy ever and if Brian is still the TA your set. Don't worry about the readings so much as the notes and the novels. Interesting class, great professor. I went from a C to an A just bc I showed I cared and went to reviews sessions and participated
Shah is gorgeous! His lectures can be boring, but if you print his key terms off Blackboard it will all come together. He thinks tests suck, so he is ridiculously nice about giving you back points on tests, and is SO nice in office hours. LOVE him
IDK what all of u people are talking about! lol I thought he was an awful teacher. I often found myself sitting trying to scribble round-about notes...simpling wondering WHAT he was talking about! He's nice...I'll give him that...but that's all.
This class was pretty boring. It's sometimes really hard to follow his lectures, but going to study group/review sessions with the TA (who is VERY helpful and approachable) will definitely help you stay on track. Also, essays, tests, & quizzes are pretty easy as long as you show up & pay attention.
HE IS THE MAN!! HONESTLY ALL HIS TEST ARE FROM HIGHSCHOOL HISTORY. GO TO CLASS MOST OF THE TIME AND I JUST DO OTHER HOME WORK, HIS QUIZES ARE GREAT, HES A REALLY NICE GUY AND VERY FLEXIBLE.
Really nice guy, however uses world history class to focus almost exclusively on Islamic History, and propagate his anti-american sentiment.
Egon from ghostbusters! He knows his stuff, but acts like a snob. Difficult class and he is very hard to listen to without going to sleep. Avoid if possible unless a Hist major! Nice Mullett.
This guys pretty cool...tests are pretty hard and theres a lot of reading. sometimes he contradicts himself in class, but overall hes pretty chill. i would take him again.
i would like to say nice things about him, but the word prick keeps coming up, when i think about the guy, SO incredibly vauge, no humor at all, i want to reccomend this guy but i just can't do it
I love history, but I hated this class. The textbook is no help becuz it's not an actual history book. His notes are no help. You get a list of words and you have to make your own notes from that, but he talks to fast to get everything down. I do NOT recommend taking him.
Hes pretty hot...I didn't mind looking at him for 50 minutes. He is really vague though and its hard to take reliable notes. The quizzes are easy as anything and so are the tests. Id recommend him for someone who really likes history
Hanifi is a really nice guy and his TA Brian is so helpful. His lectures are all over the place and hard to follow but nothing is easier than the quizzes and tests. The kite runner is an amazing book. He does assign some essays that are a pain. Online articles are unecessary for the most part
The Shah is the man. I didn't really do anything but I got a B+ bro. He still doesn't know anything about leanfest, but he is still a real chill professor. He is Shah the Magnificent
Easiest class ever. Definitely take Hanifi... he may not have a great sense of humor, but you will find yourself laughing at the way he emphasizes every word he says. You can entertain yourself. Tests are easy. You don't have to read. It's actually a lot of... fun.
lectures are horrible...all over the place. he is obviously a knowledgable historian but cannot teach. the readings are too long, and too specified to provide students with the broad understanding of history that should be obtained from a GenEd. the way he emphasizes certain words is hilarious......
Shah is amazing. his lectures are so broad and all over the place. don't even bother taking notes. go to class for quizzes, read for the test and you'll do fine. definitely listen to the way he talks, its hilarious. but according to him, iran/iraq and islamic culture are the only things that matter
His lectures are absolutely horrible. Don't bother taking notes because you won't ever use any of it. The only way he gets people to come to class is because he has random quizzes. Long readings to do every week, and the tests are hard. He thinks he is aloof to everyone else, and talks funny.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! His lectures are outta control! He's obcessed with the Ottoman Empire, and nothing he talks about is ever on the tests! Random pop quizzes-which is how he takes attendance. Final is partly cumulative(dont ask!?). If you're looking for an easy class this is not it!
STAY AWAY! He doesnt understand that this is supposed to be gened. The lectures are useless but you have to go because of pop quizes. Have to read 3 books and for some reason 2 of 3 include graphic descriptions of anal rape. The final is cumulative and impossibly hard. Too much focus on middle east.

STAY away from this MAN.. he is the worst teacher ever!! He lectures about random things.. Is never clear on the topics he is covering.. His tests are ridiculously hard! And he assigns outrageous amounts of reading... Does he not understand that this is a GENed? Dont take this class you'll regret it
TERRIBLE CLASS. Horrible lecures that dont appear on the tests. Impossible tests because they are basically all essays. Trust me, i got a B+, but this is a terrible class that i would not wish anyone to take. Anyone who says he is good took him last semester. STAY WAY, HANIFI SUCKS
Hanifi lectures about completely random topics and creates no ties or connections between these absurdly random and extremely boring historical events. His readings will bore you to tears and the lack of direction in the class will leave you mystified. Avoid this class at all costs, I got a B and this was by far my worst college experience to date
Good professor, especially for history. Although some of the material is tedious and tough to get through, you'll learn a lot. You can tell he's excited about teaching history & the workload is very reasonable. I don't like history very much and he made it quite bearable. Make friends w/ the TA and go to the study review sessions before tests.
Wow! People seem really harsh;I didn't think he was bad @ all. I guess a lot of people just really don't like history. In my opinion he's a good prof & I felt his lectures were very well laid out & organized. He does cover a good amount of info, but he puts note outlines on blackboard so it helps to print those off B4 class. I recommend him!!!
This guy will put you to sleep even if you've had a dozen cups of coffee. If you do manage to stay awake, you hand will be numb from writing SO MUCH, half of what you've written is pointless to study, just some tangent he's run off to. He's a nice person, but not at all helpful and NOT understanding. Skip him if you can.
great teacher. very interested in listening to everything a student has to say, interests, hobbies and such.. knows the middle east well and communicates his knowledge to the student precisely. good experience.
I don't think he's as bad as some on here say. He definitely seems more of an anthropologist than historian though. His notes really are quite useless on exams, but it's pretty straight out of the book. He has trouble transitioning his thoughts when he speaks, but I found him interesting. I used to terribly hate history until I had him. He's worth giving a try.
hes actually kind of hot
Definitely not as bad as people say. Definitely a space cadet, but a great guy, always willing to help, and his notes definitely come together as you study them. He's a fair grader with a good sense of humor, but tends to stray off topic, but it's not like he'll kill you with boredom. Keep an open mind and be patient and you'll love it.
If you are just taking him for a Gen Ed STAY AWAY. His lectures are boring and don't pertain to the tests. His random quizes are the only reason for attending the class. Be ready to read and read... and read. He's not a bad guy, but hard teacher!
Hanifi is a pain. he is unclear his overhead notes are just subtitles from text with no real explanation. when we covered the industrialization period and the enlightenment most of what he talked about was the ottoman empire and the middle east. most of the class is like that. offers no help or guide the TA basically prepares you for the tests.
Please stay away from Dr. Hanifi. I thought he was a nice guy and a helpful professor until the end of my thesis work, when he revealed himself as highly unprofessional and even cruel. Even in our meetings he was dry and pedantic, so I can't even fathom what its like to be in lecture with him.
Incredibly unclear... Only people with a strong background in the middle east will understand this class, because he doesn't relate it to a history we already know, and doesn't explain the meaning of foreign words. If you're stuck with this class, I suggest READING EVERYTHING because it was the only way I could pass this course and learn anything.
WORST CLASS/WORST PROFESSOR ever. Every time he was asked questions, his response confused EVERYONE and didn't clarifty anything (He even ACKNOWLEDGES that he didn't answered the question) Lectures have very little relevance to coursework. In my opinion, he isn't interested in helping students learn, and doesn't care whether they fail or pass.
He knows a whole lot of the Middle East but I seemed to learn more material from the reading assignments. He's good to know outside class and likes to meet people but isn't really good at lecturing. Tests are kinda easy if you read the stuff. He's the only HIST 270 professor though, and though I like him, I wish he was better at teaching.
My favorite class at JMU so far. Though he can strike some people as abrasive, i didn't find him to be the terror that people claimed him to be. Aside from the obvious "go to lecture and you'll do well" stuff, it helps if you're actually interested in learning about the middle east. Term paper was hard but he was helpful. The final was cake.
He is a really helpful professor and such a nice guy! He really wants to help his students! He has been my favorite JMU professor!! His powerpoints are hard though because they are just random sentences that make no sense to anyone but him. Overall though good professor!!
He was kinda boring, but very knowledgable. His mug didnt hurt to look at though :) Understanding and seemingly helpful.
Tough class but easy teacher! HE gives out so much extra credit that I have a 98% and i got a C on both tests. He is VERY helpful and understanding. Yes the material is hard but he is the one to take.
My favorite professor at JMU! While his lectures can be a little unclear, I've never met an educator who is so concerned about his students learning. He wants students to read more than spoon-feed the info. Received nicest email after I failed 1st test telling me I wasn't a # to him. Gives MAJOR extra credit! Fantastic prof. & wonderful man!
I feel like he would be a good professor in a different subject and if he could exercise control over the students. The class was unbearable due to the surplus of imbecilic students. This causes him to dumb down the material to an insulting level which inevitably hurts those who actually possess some form of mental faculty.
NICEST MAN I've ever met...but definitely not the best prof. Completely unorganized lectures, random PPT slides...it was really hard to follow him and learn. I learned some stuff, but definitely not the most stimulating class. Hanifi really cares about his students though, and has a great sense of humor and definitely isn't bad to look at.
DO THE EXTRA CREDIT! HE GIVES SO MUCH. F and D on midterms and I still ended up with an A... Theres no strict attendance policy. He doesnt really fully answer questions, jumps around a lot and daily class cirriculum is random discussion..study with outlines he puts online and you'll be fine. Nice guy, very helpful...and reminiscent of willy wonka
class is mad boring but i did awful on exams and the essays but still got a decent grade...he gives a lot of e.c. and its helpful. props to the 2 people who said he reminds you of willy wonka. thats all i can think about when i see him now
As mentioned before his powerpoints are very vague and its very difficult to take notes. Extensive readings that are always on the test so read the book! he is very understanding and one of the nicest profs i've had at JMU! make sure you take advantage of the many extra-credit opportunities. I recommend him!
I learned SO much in this class. Just be warned, he is not very clear or guided during lectures. So just listen, take good notes, read everything, memorize the study guide and you'll do fine because he gives so much extra credit. overall, really good class!
You will learn in this class. It may seem unorganize and dysfucntional, but in reality the topic, Capitalism is hard to understand. There are so many layers. But the best attribute of this professor is that he actually cares about his studetns.
The class is complete trivia. His tests are terrible and he keeps saying how they are flawed. You will get about 25 points extra credit on the test. Hard to fail, but going to class is painful due to his rambling nature about stuff that hardly relates. You won't learn much, but it is an easy A if he knows you, so ask questions and go to his office.
SO, he completely changed his class this semester. He no longer gives extra credit on the papers and not nearly as much on the quizzes and tests. He does his best to make sense of the content, but it is still pretty confusing. He failed everyone on the short ans section for the test. If you want to read 40+ pages per night, please indulge yourself.
He's a good teacher, it's just the topic is a hard one to understand. In order to get a good grade you HAVE to read all the assigned readings, which is A LOT. Nice dude though
Fantastic teacher, really wants to help his students out. The reading may seem tough, but the grades even out over the course of the semester. Overall, one of very few passionate professors at JMU
Loved Hanifi. Definitely taking another class with him. SO smart. Very challenging, tons of difficult reading. No textbook. Tests are hard, watch out. Very helpful and very nice- go to office hours! Not an easy A, but totally worth the time and effort if you're POSC or HIST major or MECM minor.
Professor Hanifi is so passionate about what he teaches. He is very nice and helpful in office hours. READ the sections assigned in the books..it helps a lot! he gives a lot of extra credit. I thought i was going to get a B- in the class but ended up with an A!
Over all i love and respected Dr. Hanifi! Lots of reading, fairly difficult exams (except the last i thought it was easy). He might be vague during class so go to his office and he'll clear things out. Show an interest in the class as he takes it to the heart to teach you something new about Afghanistan. If you do the following you're Good to go!
Articles = textbook. Tests are hard but not impossible. He gives you the grade you deserve. If you put in solid effort and work then you'll get a solid grade in the class. Very very very knowledgeable on the subjects he teaches. Bottom-line: take his class
HANIFI IS THE MAN!!!! Take his class! It's a ton of reading and you'll think that it's really hard, but you get tons of extra credit. He's absolutely hilarious; the reading may seem overbearing, but I only read what was necessary to write the papers and got a B overall. Take his class.
Dr. Hanifi clearly loves the material he teaches but it can get a little confusing at times. Theres ALOT of reading with the course and it requires effort at times. overall i would recommend him if you like to read and enjoy the topic of capitalism. test aren't impossible but require alot of studying, he also give ample chances for extra credit
I think about the material learned in this class everyday. Dr. Hanifi shows you how to study, read at a college level, and get acquainted with the material. A very down to earth guy who loves what he is teaching; an absolutely brilliant man. Put in the hard work and you'll have a rewarding experience.
Dr. Hanifi taught Capitalism in 2008 and I can still recall the work of Adam Smith, Karl Marx, Fernand Braudel, and Max Weber. This professor is cunning and brilliant; his passionate approach to teaching inspires students. Hopefully, I will serve on a committee with Dr. Hanifi someday. I truly value his professorship at James Madison University.
Hanifi is easily one of the smartest men I have ever met. If you do the readings and take interest in his class, then you'll do fine. There is a lot of stuff to read, but his tests aren't that bad and there's a decent amount of extra credit available. His office hours really help!
If you are not interested in this material, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He is one of those professors who doesn't acknowledge that you are taking other classes besides his gen ed, and 95% of the class doesn't have any interest in the class anyway. Tests are matching so they're not that hard, but the assignments are just way too extensive
Dr. Hanifi is extremely intelligent, and during some lectures when he's really into the material it's interesting, but otherwise he's very scatter-brained and speaks slowly and unclearly. There's so much work and reading and it doesn't feel like a GenEd at all. The tests are either super easy or super hard...hard to know what to expect with Hanifi.
If you do not want to fail...DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS. You have to take notes on Articles that are abt 40pgs long. The exams are pretty difficult. He does not explain things well watsoever. He is quite bias at times. WORST CLASS besides CHEM.
First of all his voice is extremely irrating. The work load is insane for a gen-ed, taking notes on 40 page articles that you have to print, and are so increadibly boring, and redundant. He really doesn't know what he's doing. But if you go to office hours he's really nice and will work with you.
Hanifi is a nice guy... he's confusing at times but take good notes and you will be solid. Get the readings done and you'll easily score an A. I love going to class. He's pretty hilarious. Super helpful during office hours.
Hanifi is by far my fav professor so far. He is the most intelligent man I have met and he is so passionate and knowledgeable about the material. Theres ALOT of notes and reading but they are all extremely interesting. Not an easy class but you will learn an immense amount. Work hard for a B, do all readings and take amazing notes, they are graded!
Super knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and very helpful. Lots of work for a gen ed but Its easy to succeed if you do the work. Lets you make cheat sheets for tests
I was stunned to see this man had a rating this low. He is one of my favorite professors I've had here at JMU. The class was challenging, but he was clear and reasonable with his expectations, passionate about the subject matter, and interesting to listen to. Lots of reading, but it's NOT overbearing like some people on here have said. TAKE HIM.
Awesome professor, extremely intelligent. Have him now for GHUM, he gets a little too in depth for a gen ed, but overall the class is a pretty easy A. Have a 93 & 100 on first 2 tests. As long as you read and somewhat pay attention in class you'll be ok. Def would recommend, also gives study guide and lets you bring in notes for tests!
Shah Hanifi is a very smart man. At times he comes off as condescending towards students, but it is never personal. Overall he is the best professor I have had here yet. I stopped reading the book at chapter 3 and still have gotten A's on ever test. Ton of extra credit! If you do not get an A in this class, you are doing something very wrong.
Hanifi is super duper unclear. He's a really really nice guy just super discombobulated. You will have to read some really boring articles and then write a one page synapses on them. He's an easy A though, his tests are multiple choice matching and you get to use a page of notes front and back, so theres no excuse to fail, just show up and pass!
A revisionist historian and a greatly revered specialist in his area. You must be preparred to work in his class. Papers are long, and readings are heavy. But if you're interested in his topic he can teach you more than anyone else. He is very realistic about the course looad and acknowledges that it's heavy, but gives you credit for what you do.
I learned more during Hanifi's class than any other course I have taken at JMU. If you did not have any interest in the region the course is based on you will afterwards. Getting an "A" is attainable as long as you put in proper effort. I think most people that knock him as being hard are just use to skating by in classes with minimal effort.
Hanifi has good intentions but at times his class can be confusing at best. He's super helpful in office hours and its very important that you read the chapter before you come to class. He's very passionate about this subject but still sometimes the lectures come off as boring. Not bad but definitely not the best.
Hanifi is extremely intelligent and very passionate about the subject. Readings are long and challenging, but are mandatory to pass. Exams are very difficult if you didn't take good notes. Lots of extra credit is available, and you can have 1 page of notes for each quiz/test. This course was interesting, but extremely time consuming.
Hanifi is amazing. He's a little quirky, but his lectures are engaging and very in depth. His specialization is South Asian studies and he is extremely knowledgable on the subject. His quizzes and tests aren't too hard, you can bring in a cheat sheet for both. He puts a big emphasis on note taking and encourages students to ask questions.
Absolutely an amazing professor. He is incredibly intelligent, is a SCHOLAR in what he teaches, very well written. Hilarious in lecture, LOVES camels. YOU WILL READ in this class, be prepared. Definitely helps as tests are solely based on the articles he post in canvas. Tests are easy, but strict writing assignments, really help you develop though!
HE IS AMAZING. this class was the easiest class ive ever taken at JMU and he is such a nice guy. hes kind of weird but it keeps class interesting. you'll read a lot outside of class but he gives a study guide to help and his tests are based off of it and you get to bring a cheat sheet to quizzes and tests. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Amazing revisionist historian. The reason JMU has a Middle Eastern Studies curriculum. Show interest in the topics, ask questions. He's a tough grader on written assignments, so if you aren't a great writer, get help in office hours! Ask him about the work he did on hawalas. Super interesting dude. LOVES CAMELS. RESPECT THE CAMEL.
Awesome teacher. Opportunity for a lot of extra credit. 4 tests 4 quizzes. Have to read for tests. Lectures for quizzes. A lot of reading but very easy if you do the work. Highly recommend
Inspiring, Influential, Interested in teaching you more than just textbook material. You will walk away with insight & wisdom if you know how to pay attention. Most students looking for easy grade. Plenty of extra credit opportunity for this. But read his books & publications. He's not only an academic on the theoretical side, he makes history.
He rubbed me the wrong way at first because he seemed very unclear, but he ended up being one of my favorite professors. He teaches you how to think and analyze reading at a college level, very conceptual. 4 quizzes, 4 exams, pay attention, read, and take good notes! He puts heavy emphasis on note taking. Take him!
Have to keep up with notes while he talks, and read the textbook. You get to use notes for tests and quizzes, and there's no extra 'fluff' assignments. Amazing, well-educated professor with a good sense of humor. Easiest class I've ever taken, but I also learned (and retained) a lot. Interesting class, would recommend to anyone.
His class feels really hard while you're in it but I got a C on an exam & still got an A because of how he grades. We didn't have class for two weeks once because he was in India at a conference about Elephants. You have to read but he gives so much extra credit & you can use notes on the exams. His life story is incredible & he loves camels!
I love this man! I didn't think this course would be interesting but I was wrong. At times, you'll fall asleep during his lectures. But as long you read you'll pass the class. He lets us make a cheat sheet for every quiz and test because there is so much info and yet the questions are very straight forward so just attend class and you'll be golden.
HUM252 with Hanifi.. the class is focused on Southeast Asian Studies. There are a decent number of readings for this class and a lot of material from lectures on quizzes. He really stresses note taking and allows students to have handwritten pages of notes for quizzes and exams (lots of extra credit for quizzes too)
TAKE HIM!!! He is an actual scholar and has accomplished so much. His life story is incredible! He emphasizes note taking a lot and honestly my note taking skills got a lot better by taking this class. Hes really helpful and nice too, take him & you wont regret it!!
Really smart guy who knows the topic. However, his lectures are lengthy. He often talks in circles and goes off on random tangents. His tests are okay, he allows you to bring in a cheat sheet. If you work hard enough and actually study you can pass. Make sure to go to every class since the tests are made up of what he says directly.
4 quizzes on lectures, 4 tests on textbook readings. Take him! It's honestly not a difficult class, but the lectures get boring and the readings become tedious. Lots of extra credit on quizzes. He does the class by points instead of percentages which ends up helping a lot. He gives study guides with all of the terms that will be on the test too.
4 exams, 4 quizzes, with a lot of extra credit questions for the quizzes. You can bring notes for both, so if you do the reading (exams) and show up to class for the lectures (quizzes) it's an easy A- at least. You can only miss 3 classes before your grades is affected. He is a very intelligent scholar who helped me become a better student overall.
Dr. Hanifi was a really great professor that really cared about helping his students pass. The course was definitely reading heavy, so you do actually have to do work to pass, but getting an A is definitely doable.
Professor Hanifi takes pride in the course material he is teaching and adds a personal feeling to it by really getting involved in the emotional stance of the material.
Prof. Hanifi is a great professor that really cares about what he teaches. He is a scholar and has had a very successful life with what he does! Although he is a great professor, the work outside of class is very difficult and it is a LOT of reading. The material is pretty tricky and I often struggled. Be prepared to STUDY ahead of time!
Professor Hanifi is a great professor. He cares very much about his students and is very accommodating. For every test and quiz, you may use a designated amount of notes which is very very helpful. The reading outside of class is not very easy and a bit hard for me to understand. Overall, he was a great professor. Definitely recommend!
This class is very hard to explain. Hanifi lectures over a broad amount of material as well as assigns pretty heavy reading. It was hard for me to understand what was going on half of the time but if you go to class and write down as much of what hes saying as possible you will be able to make a good note sheet and do well on the exams.
Professor Hanifi obviously is knowledgable in his field. His lectures require no participation which is nice at 8 in the morning. Lectures are very disorganized and not structured but tbh you only need notes from lectures for quizzes and he tells you what days that will be. Allows you to bring notes to all quizzes and test, making it an easy A
This class is weird. Dr. Hanifi is esteemed and respected, but his lectures are insanely dry and hard to stay awake for. A lot of reading is assigned, however you can bring notes for quizzes (lecture) and tests (reading), making A's on the tests super easy. Be ready to read, you'll get that A, just be prepared to be bored in class
The topic of the class is interesting, but his lectures tend to be pretty dry and disorganized. The class is an easy A with straightforward tests, extra credit, and cheatsheets plus it gets cancelled a lot. Ultimately I liked the material and the low stress credit but, again, lecture is pretty boring and mandatory. You'll also spend hours reading.
It's kind of complicated? I am really struggling to read and comprehend the material in the class, but I have a decent grade. Dr. Hanifi gives plenty of extra credit and is very enthusiastic about the material. I can tell he wants everyone to do well. However, there is so much reading & the material is dense. This is my hardest class right now?
Reading is an absolute must in this class. All the lectures are just talking about the readings, so if you don't spend the countless hours reading then the lectures will make no sense because there is no context. Very knowledgable, but you can tell he is very opinionated and will make it known. It's overall eh, so take at your own risk
Very passionate about subject material. Cares about students and their success. Attendance is mandatory ;( so don't skip.
Honestly as long as you read and take good notes and you can pass. I went to every class but it didn't really help with the quizzes and tests. 4 quizzes and 4 tests and 50 points for attendance. Can get an attitude if you leave class early, but go talk to him once or twice in office hours and you will be fine.
The amount of extra credit given is crazy. I literally got a B on every single test and quiz and ended with a high A. This class can be boring, but as long as you are willing to read and take notes you will get an easy A.
I love Dr. Hanifi as a professor but the workload can get to be a bit unmanageable around mid-term time with LOTS of reading (multiple chapters with at least 15-20 pages each). The wording of the text can make it difficult to get through without losing focus at points. He is very passionate about S. Asia + is well-respected in his field of study.
Professor Hanifi is a nice guy and is very passionate about what he teaches but the lectures are very bland and hard to follow. The amount of times I left class not really knowing what the point of the lecture was is insane. Lots of notes and the tests are super hard although he does let you have notes. Hardest class I took and it was a gen ed.
He lets you use notes for tests and quizzes. His lectures seem to last a long time, and he tends to get off topic talking about himself and his achievements. Has extra credit for quizzes.
whole class is graded off a quiz and test for each of four units, every class is a lecture, each absence is minus 2% do NOT take this at 8am. quizzes are easy and half extra credit and tests are hard and material gets more boring towards the end of the course but everything is open note. all work can be done a couple nights before assessments.
Everything's open notes, handwritten only. He gives you a study guide with terms, but the test only uses most and some you didn't study. I spent hours on notes, but the extra credit saved me. He's passionate, but his lectures are confusing and go in circles. The course pack was expensive when he could have posted PDFs. Make-ups are case-by-case.
In general not a hard class, his lectures are almost useless but mandatory. There are four tests on the readings and there's a quiz on the lecture the class before every test. HE WILL TEST YOU ON HIS PERSONAL LIFE (like you have to know who he's pen pals with) and it's so hard to pay attention to his lectures. If you don't read you'll fail.
He seems like a good guy and is very knowledgeable about the Middle East, but his lectures are all over the place. I had no idea what I should write down for notes because he seemed to go off topic. The the amount of readings he has you do before class is insane. He is never sure about what you have to have read by the day you have class.
This class was interesting, but his lectures can be soo long and tedious, he sometimes goes off topic. Hes very knowledgeable and passionate. There were quizzes and tests on each unit based on readings and a book, and you can bring x amount of sheets of notes to the test. Each quiz and test has a lot of extra credit questions which help soo much!
Lectures were pretty dry, but he was kind and passionate about what he teaches. I found some of the class interesting. He talks a lot about his professional life and note-taking in general, but I didn't mind because he was never boastful, and talking about college skills like note-taking might be valuable for a gen-ed. Not stellar, but recommended.
Prof Hanifi is a very kind. genuine guy who is extremely passionate about what he is teaching. However, I have him at 8am, and boy is he boring. I sleep through every lecture just because I am not interested in anything he is saying. Readings are a lot of work, and you have to take notes but the tests/quizzes are openbook. He gives extra credit too
Just read as he asks and take notes and you'll get an A.
Four quizzes followed by four extra credit quizzes and four tests. NOTE-TAKING IS CRUCIAL! He uses a point system so the grade on Canvas isn't entirely accurate. Lecture heavy and difficult to pay attention to. However, he is really passionate about his work and teaching this course. Oh, and there's A LOT of reading...
Gives an INSANE amount of readings. I was reading for hours upon hours to keep up. During lecture he goes over the readings for the entire class than posts recorded lectures of course material that are very lengthy (give or take an hour). A lot of out of class work to prepare for quizzes and exams. But he gives an insane amount of extra credit.
If you don't have the spare time to read for 4 hours/week to keep up with the content, don't take this class. You have to learn a lot in a short period of time. The quizzes/tests aren't too bad if you are able to keep up with the readings. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you are genuinely interested in the subject!!
A great guy however, if you dont have the time to read over 300 pages before class, good luck. His lecture slides provide zero info, or notes. was a hybrid class and just taught with half the class not able to zoom in, or meet, paid full price for missing half the classes.
Hes a really knowledgeable guy, but unless you have a free schedule and love to read in practically another language, I dont suggest this class. The lectures barely cover test knowledge, and the reading is LENGTHY. He does give extra credit after quizzes though! Honestly so nice and respectful, the content just kinda sucks.
His lectures are confusing and he doesn't finish his thoughts. However, if you take notes on the readings and some notes on the lectures, you'll do fine.
Professor Hanifi is very passionate about what he teaches, however be prepared to read and take notes. His tests and quizzes are open-note, so if you take good notes you'll do well.
Dr. Hanifi is very passionate about his class, but there were multiple different textbooks and we had to read them all. Not an easy A by any means, but he wants us to do well. He is super sweet, but you have to put in the effort.
Dr. Hanifi is very passionate however this class robbed me of all my free time. Each reading took me around 3+ hours note-taking and all, and attendance was mandatory where he would just restate in complicated terms the readings. If you do the readings, you will do great- all the exams, quizzes, and extra credit are opennote. If you don't, you wont
I would not recommend taking this class or this professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches which is awesome but not when most students take it as a gen ed. I would read for hours a day and still get 70s on the tests. The amount of work put in is not worth it at all and it is a very frustrating and unrewarding class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
This Proffesor has a good personality but he is not good at teaching. Don't take his class. Notes and his teaching are very confusing and makes it hard to study. STAY AWAY and never take this class if all classes are full. The amount of work you do is not worth what you get at the end. His class is a struggle, multiple textbooks and confusing
Very passionate and inspiring professor, who loves what he teaches and enjoys hearing students feedback on what they have read. There is a lot of reading, but overall a very good class/professor.
The worst history professor I have had at JMU. His lectures are extremely disorganized, it is impossible to understand anything he talks about. The readings are very long and he expects you to complete graduate level amounts of reading in a 300 level class. Tests and quizzes are very specific but span massive amounts of readings.
Passionate professor, but the course load is heavy. Stay on top of the extensive readings and take thorough notes. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding class if you're genuinely interested in the subject.
Nice guy but yaps about elephants for 95% of class. Honestly a snooze fest. Luckily the quizzes and tests are out of class because he assigns absurd amounts of reading that is borderline inhumane. Get ready to listen to 2 hour lecture videos and want to rip your hair out. I nearly smashed my laptop on the ground. He liked me though. Respectable man
Okay, Professor Hanifi is a nice man with a big heart who can call you out and make class time feel like eight hours. If you take this class, be aware of the meaning of note-taking groups. The amount of reading is a lot and can be overwhelming. Also, to add to that, the movies he makes you watch are long so bring popcorn and take good notes.
Ungodly amount of reading. You have four take home quizzes and exams throught the semester plus lots of extra credit. Attendance is mandatory but you just sit there and listen to lectures on elephants. Easy A but you do have to put in some work taking notes on readings because you submit notes for a grade.
The absolute worst professor I have ever taken at JMU. This man needs to be fired, his lectures are incoherent and disorganized. The readings are extremely long and pretty useless as everything they say could be summarized in one page but instead they are 90 pages a piece. He expects you complete graduate level work for a 300 level course
Please do not take him. His lectures are unorganized and unprepared. Tests were about random trivia taken from ridiculously long readings. In addition to mandatory lectures, he assigns multiple-hour long pre-recorded lectures that we were tested on as well. During these he often talks about himself or rants about elephants. It's a waste of time.
I love this professor. to start i couldn't find the course but im taking hist150 with him and its great. We have 2, 30-40 page readings and a quiz on the readings every week, along with essay on a video every week. it definitely a lot of work but its so worth it. easy grader. will let you redo if problems arise just communicate! great professor!
terrible hate do not take this class or this professor. really rought time with this professor and had to fight with him about my accomodations all semester. had to "teach him" about it when all other professors had no issues. hes weird and lowkey creepy. called a 41 on a test a "pretty good score". yeah... dont take this class or professor!
Everything is graded on the reading! - don't have to pay for a book though. I loved this class and all of the readings were manageable. This was a gen ed for me and way out of my usual courses but he is a great professor, really cares, and responds very well to any/all feedback. Kind of eccentric but very enjoyable to have. Genuinely one of my favs
I genuinely really love him and his class. The class is a lot of reading but as long as you stay on top of it, it's not bad. His lectures just backs up and clarifies what was in the book. He cares about his students and clearly wants success. Every time I've had a question he's taken the time to give me an answer and make sure I really understand.
He seems like a nice guy really, it's just the way that the class is set up makes it so hard for anyone to pass. I withdrew from it because the only grades are tests. I'm not a good test taker and there is no practice so you have no idea what to expect. His lectures are so disorganized. The content has so much potential but he teaches it poorly.
if you value your life and academic journey at jmu never take a course with this professor or you will rethink every single choice youve ever made. the class is solely based on 3 texts including the final exam and hes extremely inconsiderate to any issues you may have personally that would effect your ability to attend class.
Do not take this professor. Reading amount is extremely heavy. Allows a page of notes for tests but way too much information to fit all of it on the paper. Readings make no sense and impossible to get a good grade on the tests. Lectures are boring and also make no sense. He rambles on for the whole class and everyone is confused. DO NOT TAKE THIS!!
The entirety of the class he is just going on random rambles about the readings. You will get assigned 4 readings per week. The exams are 50 multiple choice questions about random vocab that is separated on the sheet by commas, attendance is mandatory, you wont pass unless you do really well on tests if not you have to do extra credit to pass.
I had Dr. Hanifi a few years ago, but I always felt bad for his RMP. Yes, he is a bit unorganized, but he is also so caring, and I learned so much from him. If you can work with his chaos, his courses are extremely fulfilling and worthwhile.
for a general education class this professor truly thinks his class is the most important out of every class you take. he is extremely rude, inconsiderate, and overall just a terrible person. i would never again in my life choose to take this course with this professor because he genuinely made my semester miserable.
i dont believe that any single review i can make will summarize how awful of a professor this man is. if you have already begun the course, drop if you still can, if not. good luck charlie
DO NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT. TAKE THIS CLASS
the grade i recieved in this course is not a matter of effort put into my work its a matter of completely poor teaching. nothing you study in the coursework is relevant to the exams and it is a miserable experience.
