I had him as a prof in 1998. I went on to the U of M and never found nearly as much dedication or desire to teach in any of my profs there! He pushes you, and you benefit from it.
He was the worst teacher ever. I think he's from India, and his accent is very thick so you cant understand a word her says which makes it hard to do the work for class.
Accent makes him hard to understand, plus mind numbing lectures. Makes UBER hard tests. Makes frequent mistakes in examples during lectures, claims he's "making sure your paying attention. 2/3 of class dropped b4 end of year. Don't take his class if you value you value your GPA.
He loved his work, loved his students. He had high expectations, but what I learned in his class laid a strong foundation for future math classes. And he's not that hard to understand - kinda like a brit-com - you have to listen a little more acutely, but a person with an average IQ can handle it.
Heavy accent, and has very difficult tests. Better teacher than Steve Hlusak, but not by much.
Gupta is great at explaining the foundation of everything. Many things that I never understood in high school, I'm finding out why. Gupta makes sure that you know the basics. He'll throw 15 pt. quizzes at you a couple times each week, so you have to learn it. I got a B in the class. Good for me :)
Gupta is more than willing to help you. If you go to him he will spend time helping you. Very hard grader on tests. You have to get the whole thing right or you get no points!!! Overall he is ok though. Just do all the problems that he tells you to do (and more).
very intelligent guy, but talks way to fast for his thick accent. if you cant understand whats he's saying or read his writing, the lecture is pointless. office hours with him are helpful to understand his speach. tests can be easy or hard, depending on how prepared you are
He is a great teacher who really enjoys what he does. I thought he was extremely helpful. Yes I do admit it was hard to understand at first because of his accent but he is more than willing to help you succeed. If you want to do well in his class and show some effort, he will go above and beyond to help you achieve your goals.
Very helpful if you ask for it. Ive never seen him turn a student with a question away. Test are very thorough. If you like to slack, or math isnt your fav. subject, take someone else. With Gupta you show up to every lecture, ask questions when you dont understand, and you will know math inside and out.
Nice guy, but acts like he's out to put America on top of the Mathemical World. Grades tests harshly and is unbending. High expectations. Needs to cut down the amount of material he covers in a day. Needs to enunciate more clearly. Thinks math is more important than anyting else in the universe.
Knows a lot about math and he enjoys it. Wants you to spend an insane amount of time studying. Tests are hard to get an A on. Expects a lot from students (so don't slack and come to class) Hard to understand at first, but you get use to it. He does write everything on the board, so taking notes are easy. After a while, he is very funny.
At first I did not enjoy his class at all, but once I got used to his teaching style I realized how good of a professor he was. He isn't afraid to take questions in class (although he can make several mistakes a week) and he explains each concept thoroughy. Homework is required, but it helps your final grade because his tests can be very difficult
He is more or less a genious but he is not that great of a teacher. I am not trying to be mean but he is probably the worst teacher that I have ever had. I asked for specific help on two separate occations and he simply told me to work harder.I worked a minimum of 10 hrs per week.On top of this he barely spoke english which made lectures tourture.
A nice guy. Hard to understand sometimes/just need to learn how he teaches. I took him for Algebra and I am now in Trig. Once you understand his style of teaching it is easier to understand him. He expects you to work hard and spend time reviewing the material. If you work hard you will get an A. Bring your own stapler to the class!!
sometimes hard to understand but is kind and funy helpful in lecture shows many examples
Didnt get an A on any of the tests but got an A in the class. He has HILARIOUS analogies....but he sometimes isn't very clear to understand. Do your homework, well you have to. He is extremely smart on the subject...only problem is his accent is hard to understand at times.
great teacher if you need math help.
Tries to prove he's smarter than you. 50% of the class got a D or below. Test "reviews" are a joke since most of the information is for stuff not on the test. Spends a lot of time convincing you how fair he is. I'm usually an A student but barely managed a D.
I took Pre-Calc with Gupta with one of my friends...We both loved him, he is a tough teacher and if i wasn't motivated in math i wouldn't have succeeded. If you show him you are interested in class, and you talk to him after class or outside class he will love you. He has very funny analogies, and if your relaxed in class you'll have fun.Very helpfu
Professor Gupta is, in my opinion, one of the best professors I've had (and I've had a lot). He was very patient when I went to his office (which was practically every day) and did an excellent job breaking things down for me when I was confused. He does a great job getting the material across to you; you will learn from this guy!
SHAMLALL GUPTA is the best math teacher i have ever had. He's the one who made me love what I am learning. His class is pretty easy if you participate in class (don't miss any of his classes, cuz then you'll be missing a lot of material). His tests are basically from all the examples we learned in class, and in my opinion he's very fair in his grad

He was often upset with the class and couldn't understand why students didn't love math as much as he did. Called on students randomly and expected correct answers. Scared me a little. Granted, it was a 7:30 class, so no one was happy. ;) I believe he was very intelligent, just didn't relate well to students.
one of the best teachers i have ever had. he expects you to work hard but he takes the time necessary to teach the basics before jumping in to harder stuff. very helpful and does call on people at random but it makes me pay attention. i feel as though i will know math better because of him and that is his job. take him if you want to learn math. A+
TESTS ARE TOO DAMN HARD!!!
I really like how he explains, but I somehow like his grading and somehow not, he usually grades that 85% and more would be A still his marking test is low, and he deducts point for only missing negative signs and likewise. I would really recommend if your Major is Math.
Had him for Calc II. Our class was only 15, so I think he connected to us more personally than other classes. Very clear on what he expects, frequently asks if anyone has questions, tests can be tricky, but most of his problems are almost carbon copies of problems from the book with a few things changed. Do your homework and you should be fine.
This professor is one of my worst b/c lack of understanding his English language while talking, Call Random students, and one time i miss a test he didnt talk to me personally instead he share to the whole class why i fail that was so embarrassing
Worst Professor out in NHCC, lack of understanding, call random students, Grading is strange, and horrible
Overall a great teacher. Not hard to undestand at all. Very approachable with question. You do have to study hard, but what math class don't you have to study hard for. I have never had a bad math teacher at NHCC.
He is incredibly derogatory to the students, randomly calls on students and berates them in front of class for not knowing correct answer. Every class he has rude comments, for example telling students they would be better off getting a $10/hour job instead of wasting education systems time taking classes. Do NOT recommend taking his class.
Mean to students, incomprehensible when speaks and very QUIET. you can't hear him. doesnt treat everyone equaly (late assignments are to be turned in no later than 1 day after due date, he wouldn't accept mine) grades very hashly, doesn't explain his grading. i love math, he made me hate it. he makes a 1:10 min class unbearable!
I constantly had to go back to the book and teach myself how to do the problems. He mumbles to himself and scribbles his notes onto the board, so if you can't understand what he's saying as he's writing it, good luck trying to comprehend most of what he wrote down! He's not good at explaining how he does stuff and makes MANY mistakes while teaching
He is a nice man that comes across as strict. He will help you, but only if you attempt to help yourself first. Plan to schedule many hours to complete assignments and review material. He goes through lectures very fast and has high expectations that students will spend a lot of time out of class on homework. Frequently gives quizzes. Be carefull.
I liked his teaching style. He made sure that you understood where the equations where coming from. He did a lot of practice problems and he was fun. He picks random students to answer questions but I think thats a good strategy to make sure everyone is paying attention. Tests were easy and all material was covered in class. Fantastic teacher!
This guy is mean, unfriendly, and feels students should already be familiar with the material before teaching it. Why will I be in class in the first place if I already knew it!!!! I don't recommend him.
Very strict and comes across as condescending. Gives weekly homework. Must be in attendance because he gives pop quizzes and do not allow any make up. Expect to study and know what you are doing or you will fall behind. If you want his help, it's best to see him in his office because you won't get any in class. Does not use D2L for grading.
Bad proff! Didn't give me full points for hw assignements so I corrected him & he gave me attitude, said I been missing class left to right, when I have NOT, so I corrected & asked him if I missed class how is it that I was able to do the tests & turn in hws? He said "Oh." & still did not give me full hw points. He's very defensive & unhelpful.
Awesome Prof! Very challenging and requires a lot of effort. I was beyond prepared for calc I/II because of how thorough Gupta was. He has dry humor (pretty funny though) and is actually really nice. Some students complain, but he is beyond helpful if u need help out of class. HW is a must. I would take him again; his class was very time intensive.
He is a really great teacher and he knows what he does too.
Best prof ever.
PRECALC: Condescending & unsupportive professor. Teaches as if you already know the material. Class is time consuming. Tests are HARD. Homework is confusing; things taught in class are BROAD. His teaching is 0/10, I honestly learned more from YouTube! Thought this class would uplift my knowledge for going into Calc I, instead it did the opposite :(
I hated this class more than anything. The teacher was difficult to understand and mean. He expected that we already knew everything and taught us things that didn't matter. I had to get a tutor. He wouldn't accept my homework that was a day late due to absence (I was sick)..and he never fully answers your questions.
Gupta is overall, not a bad prof. He's a genius and you can tell he's very passionate about math. He's very thorough on some things, and not enough on others. If you need help, he's willing to help you. He likes to involve the class when he teaches.Tests are quite difficult, so make sure you STUDY! Nothing comes easy without hard work!
He is honestly THE BEST teacher I've ever had. He is very passionate about math, and is always more than happy to help if you're having problems and need clarification. I took him for pre-calc and now calc 2. He's challenging but very good at what he does and I came out of it with a much better understanding of math and logic in general.
I've been pretty good at math in the past... but I absolutely hated Mr. Gupta. He's a smart man and clearly loves math, but he is not made to be a teacher. Gupta is very difficult to work with, and this is by far the hardest class I've ever had to take. I probably only passed because of grading curves, but that's not a good thing to rely on.
Great prof. Those who say he is bad are the terribly lazy students.
He is very condescending to students- He expects students to all have taken the same math classes, and spent time lamenting and chiding students for not knowing the answer to a problem he deems simple and easy. He would also ask us to solve problems he hadn't taught us to solve yet and then chide when no one got it right- only makes you feel stupid
Worst experience at NHCC I have ever had. You would be far better off taking this course online or with another professor. Mr. Gupta will give up on you. I have never felt so stupid or incapable of learning. NHCC has stolen my money. You've been warned.
I learned a ton in his class, but it was also one of he hardest classes I've ever taken. I retook pre-calc with him and found that he taught it totally different. Homework is a must to understand. I would take him again just because of the fact that he forces you to understand and learn the material to pass.
I took Intermediate Algebra with Gupta and got an A in the course. His exams are really easy. They are based on homework and stuff he went over in class. If you really want an A in the course do the homework and show up to class. I never study for his Exam and still got an A. Keep in mind I take the time to understand all the homework.
Great teacher with a different approach than most others. You absolutely have to do the homework and study hard if you want to pass. If you show him that you ARE trying and seeking help, he will most definitely help you. Saw him once or twice a week during office hours for help. Had him for PreCalc and Calc2. Take him if you actually want to learn.
Gupta is a passionate teacher who is clearly very knowledgeable. If you haven't had a teacher like him before, he may seem confusing and difficult but he is definitely one of the better professors at NHCC.
how does quizzes and exams work
Overall Gupta is great as a person but I struggled having him as a professor. He has a heavy accent that is sometimes hard to understand and he expects you to know a lot more coming in than you do. He is very knowledgeable though about what he teaches. Show him you are trying and he will work with you more. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK. Tests are tough.
This is for the accelerated course. His lectures will give you a solid understanding of the material, and while the homework is a lot, everything that appears on the test will not be too difficult. He chooses very reasonable problems from the notes and homework. If you do the work when he assigns it, the tests are a lot easier. Generous grader too.
He is a great teacher the type that helps you understand what is happening rather than just makes you do the work. You will not have help from the computer doing your homework but you will have a better understanding about math in general in the ending.
Had to retake Calculus with him. Super down to earth, cool guy. His lectures are very realistic in their approach and he's an extremely generous grader. Lots of homework, but the tests questions are lifted straight from book problems. Probably my favorite math professor.
PreCalc/Algebra Tests NEED MORE TIME! tests take time but he only gives 50 minutes. HW Only thing you can do good on. Teaching Goes slow for Algebra and really fast for trig for some reason. Teacher will help you outside of class. Keeps telling you to study harder even though I study literally all my free time. Look elsewhere or you screwed.
Shamlall really did a great job in my class making sure everyone understood the concepts, not just the problem. The people I saw who struggled were ones not willing to ask questions. He keeps the environment fun and is really enjoyable once you catch on to his tricks and jokes. Learned a lot and enjoyed his class!
Gupta is a great prof. He makes Math look very interesting, very encouraging and loves to see you put in your best effort. He engages everyone such that you dont feel left out. I love his style and the passion he puts into teaching his courses. Definitely a great teacher for anyone willing to learn no matter your level and speed in understanding.
If you take precalc/algebra BEWARE, he goes extremely fast through the lessons and says that you should know how to do it already. He also barely gives enough practice problems in class to explain what he taught. Homework is on a weekly basis.
Prof. Gupta is an ok teacher. His accent is a little thick so sometimes I found it difficult to understand his lectures. He gives lots of homework but make sure you do them! A lot of his tests are based off homework questions or examples from his notes. He is a tough graders and expects a lot from his students. He is still very kind and caring.
He is an amazing professor. I was terrible at math till I meet him. He explains the lesson to everyone's understanding and is always willing to help. take him you won't regret it.
I like his old style teaching method. Lots of practices.
He's a very tough grader, and grades things that don't have to do with math. Like I turned in my H.W not stapled and he subtracted 2 points, and he doesn't accept late work. He subtracts points for the smallest things as well. He's also explainer as well.
He's so mean!!!!!!!
His tests are very long, and he gives lots of pop quizes
He is a very bad explainer
He doesn't use d2l at allllll. So we don't know our grade until the end. Also no online Hw or anything.
He's very fast and a really tough grader.
He gives a lot of quizzes and tests
He gives very big tests
No extra credit, hes really tough
Gives a lot of homework. Like a lotttt. And is a very tough grader
Gupta is an amazing professor. People need to remember the 1180 course is 5 credits and a double class of precalc and algebra. He explains things clearly and follows up on any questions. He's funny and has a great personality. His tests are exactly what he teaches in class. Do the homework, study an hour a day, and you get an A. He also has office.
Hard. overload of homework. his way or the highway. If its not done his way, zero credit is given even if the answers are correct
Professor Gupta is very friendly, but he is not the best professor. I took his college algebra class and it was very self guided. He works very fast and asks questions randomly. You won't know your grade until the end of the semester, and he does not answer homework questions in class.
Very hard to understand, and not very understanding. NOTE: PERSONAL/GRAPHING CALCULATOR IS NOT ALLOWED IN HIS CLASS because he didn't have one growing up in India, so you're not allowed to use one. (p.s. I skipped a lot of class, so I'm not exactly sure how I managed a B)
Hes great. He gives any possible routes for students to succeed. He did allowed a retake on one of our mid terms, because the class average was low. To ace a test all you need is a 85 out of 100 points. The problems he gave on the test were the most basic problems. He would rather have us understand the concept rather than giving us hard tests.
Gupta is an amazing teacher. He wants his students to learn, and teaches because it loves it. Homework and attendance are mandatory. Tests are basic concepts straight from the notes. He's Indian with an accent and has an old fashioned teaching style. He was my favorite teachers but some maybe be put off by him. Thank you for the amazing year Gupta.
The most difficult class I've ever taken, but the best teacher I've had. He will literally put aside his day if it meant you could get the help you needed. He is very understandable with "outside of school" issues and will give you some time to get caught up. His notes are a little difficult to read but you will get use to his writing over time.
Horrible. Just horrible. His test was the hardest things in the world. they were extremely long and most of the class never got the chance to finish them on time. It was so difficult.
He isn't the worst professor, but he is hard to understand. He has short office hours, but he is willing to answer questions. If you don't do the homework, which you do a lot of, you won't pass. He is an ok professor, but he can be funny when he wants to be.
Professor Gupta was great. I think I learned more in his class than any math class I took in high school. I was bad at math before his class but he does a good job at explaining concepts, but he does go fast sometimes. There is a lot of work to do his in his class, so be sure to show up and do the work!
This is the worst professor of all time, don't take this guy you will fail!!!! pissed off he is a loszzzer
