Very nice lady
Shamsa is the BEST there is! I retained all I learned from her!
very nice and helpful
She is old school, if you attend all class, you will do well
EASY TESTS, not very in dept and not overly interesting, extremely nice though!
her lectures are like 30mins long, all of the time spent in class is on quiz...but her class is extremely easy. Very nice teacher.
One of dougys finest
She's a super nice teacher. shows up like 10 mins late for class all the time. Super easy teacher, easy marker not really picky. Most of the quizes will come from her lectures. Is quite wordy when she explains stuff which can be annoying at times.
she's great!
Shamsa is friendly, helpful, nice-natured. I learned tons from her. she's great.
Very nice, but sometimes it seems like she doesn't know what she's talking about. I liked her though, and she is very reasonable with missed quizzes.
She is the nicest prof ever. She tries extremely hard to help every student understand the material. There are no complaints about this lady. She is truly a world class teacher. Thank you!
She's really nice, and very easy. If you're not too good at biology, she's great for beginners, but if you are good at biology, I would suggest a different teacher because she kind of teaches towards the less knowledgeable. She herself is very smart tho
great teacher!!
She is the best teacher EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!I'M SERIOUS!
easy, nice, helpful, great teacher.
her notes are messy & unorganized. she doesn't teach all the quiz material so ur better off just reading the manual urself. and she's ALWAYS late for class. she pronounces "moths" like "mots", and "viruses" like "vars". annoying! AANNNDDD she always has greasy hair.
Fantabulous teacher
She doesn't get you prepared for the final and midterm... so if you do excellent on the quizzes which are really easy, then expect the midterm to be 50x harder. always late, greasy hair, and not good at biology, you ask her something and she will not know the answer like uhh.. why are you a teacher?
Shamsa is great! She is very clear and willing to help. If you are willing to put the work in, you will succeed in her class.

My experience of her is nothing but GOOD, GOOD, GOOD!!! She is very helpful, and will go the extend to make sure that you understand. Although she can be a little bit confusing with her notes, and unclear pronounciation at times, as well her lateness. But, she is GOOD OVERALL, AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Great Teacher, very clear, very helpful, Material requires loads of study though!
a nice lady..her lecture is quite clear, but you can find almost everything in your lab manual..easy quizes..the way she marks is really fair..i'd like to take another class with her!
She rushes through everything, be prepared for her too be late and unorganized. Final exam was extremely difficult and she did not prepare the class for it at all, I'm lucky I got the mark that I got.
unorganized...always late,moody, and really creepy
She is a great teacher. Goes through all the material very well and will take the time to go over anything not well understood. Furthermore, she is a pretty easy marker.
I was very surprised by Shamsa this last term, she seemed so out of it and disorganized, not only being unprepared for the lecture itself but being late every class and even having trouble explaining the basic concepts of the course. I assume she is having a hectic homelife (kids/work/stress) which is to bad since she is a fine teacher.
Everything a good teacher should be.
Easy teacher but seriously unorganized... late everyday, never has all the stuff she needs (like a projector!) and gives us like 3 15 min breaks. easy tests and quizes
She is the best biology teacher ever, she treats everyone equally and her tests, quizes are always fair and pertaining to the lectures. I enjoyed being in her class, she likes to help people as well. Very Awsome teacher, keep up the good work Shamsa.
not the brightest crayon in the box. more than a little disorganized and not very good at answering questions in class. quizzes and tests are uber easy, though. i haven't opened my text book except to look at diagrams and i'm getting over 90. just read the course manual and you can do fine, especially if you did well in high school biology.
she is the best teacher. I think negative comments are from teachers who are jealous of her and can't stand her. her students love her.
unorganized, consistently late to class and always confused. encourages questions in class, but is unable to answer them without checking with another student, textbook or simply telling you she will look it up on the internet. not very knowledgeable in her field. be prepared to do independent work. I personally would not take her again....
I had a 3.67 GPA before I took her class. I feel that if students don't say anything about her that we would be doing other students a diservice! She is totally unorganized. Can not articulate herself well, doesn't engage in any discussion other than what is right inside the manual. Course contridicted everything I have learned in other classes.
I had her and she was fantastic......I disagree with the comments below mine stating that she is not knowledgeable because she is. She's great.
She's alright. Apart from one or two details. If you passed Bio 12 you'll be alright because here you'll fly through 1-2 topics a lecture.Sigh, that's college.

This chick is a freakin joke!!!! She is completely out of it all the time. The class itself is fairly simple if you could just get the information needed out of her. I left class early so many times because i just couldnt stand her anymore. she confuses herself for god sake! what a loser!!!!!
DO NOT try to be a teacher's pet, she hates that. attend all classes and write all the quizzes and u'll be on her good list. she likes students that put the effort in. try to show that u are interested.EASY marker! tests are ok if u study. she is really nice and very approachable. extremely kind and helpful. her quizzes are really easy. TAKE HER!!!
Super nice! Her notes are clear. quizzes every week are easy if you read the course pack and her notes. She answers all questions and is really helpful. Nothing on the tests are a surprise. Can be a bit disorganized sometimes but nothing that is a problem. GREAT TEACHER
Really nice lady but her teaching methods are confusing. Over the weekend she gave us review worksheets for dyhbrid crosses. Today for 5 minutes she explained it. Then we did a test. She threw in test crosses to confuse us more. Why doesn't she just explain the basic principals then let us work on some problems then do a test. Just really confusing
Horrible.I dont see a point in coming to class to listen to someone who doesnt explain concepts well. She was asked a question to explain, and instead of explaing asked the class what to do. Total nut, always late for class.Only positive thing is her quizzes are fairly easy.Study and youll do good, but your better off teaching the course to yourself
Seriously people read comments on here and just because it says she is easy people take her class but take my advice and DONT TAKE CLASSES WITH SHAMSA! She gets flustered when people ask her a question she is always ALWAYS late for class and then she gets frustrated with questions saying that we dont have time, she has excuses for almost everything
Terrible, never on time, Doesn't know anything (the amount of times students corrected her on the material she was teaching us was outrageous) Doesn't handle students telling her shes wrong well at all
SHE IS THE BEST!!!!!
great prof!
Dont ever take her if u wanna learn!! U wont be fully perpared for biol 1203! It seems like she doesnt even care about the students!! And trust me, her quizes r not m/c. She is also a unfair marker. The longer u write the more mark u will get. She doesnt even care wut u write!!! Makes ppl very angry the way she teaches!!!
Despite seeing the comments on here, Shamsa is probably the easiest marker in bio1103. Our class average for the midterm, being 72 percent was the highest out of all the 1103 classes. She is disorganized though and is always ten to fifteen minutes late for each class. Overall she is a good teacher and I would definately take her again.
Worse teacher ever!! Avoid her if u can. You wont be perpared for the final. She is always late with dumb excuses. She confuses herslef and students. She doesn't really care about her students. Sometimes, her marking doesn't make sense. SHE IS A MESS!
This woman is a joke! She is frequently late for class, usually 10-15 minutes. She makes her quizzes up from other instructor's quizzes, and so when you have a question about the quiz she won't be able to tell you. She is incredibly disorganized, confuses herself and the class and does stay on schedule. Currently our class is one week behind.
Wow, the student below must be doing really badly in the course. My experience so far with Shamsa has been phenomenal. She is the best biology prof I have ever had. Knows her stuff incredibly well and is excellent at communicating and explaining the material.
Disorganized teacher: Late every class, overhead notes unorganized, marking previous week's quiz during break (ranging 15-20mins). Generally doesn't have answers for questions (&/or becomes flustered when answering). An easy teacher isn't always a good one - You could have 80% in her class, but compared to other teachers that may be 60% (Not good).
Excellent and organized overhead notes; responds to questions with detailed responses. I would say that Shamsa really knows her stuff in 1210. And she's not that easy - we just got an e-mail from her stating that the class average on the midterm was only 62 %, so I don't know where the 80 % is coming from below. And she marks really fairly.
She is the WORST teacher I have ever had!! She is ALWAYS late for class, usually about 15 mins late. Once she just didn't show up and didn't notify anyone. If you have a question, she won't be able to answer it because she just doesn't know. If you take a course with her, be prepared to teach yourself.
It looks like she's writing all these counter opinions herself. I don't know a single person who has enjoyed taking her class.
Shamsa is a very poor teacher who lacks professionalism. Shamsa is a very poor teacher who lacks professionalism. She's a terrible public speaker, is always late to class and marking. Her lectures miss tons of material and listening to her is painful. Be prepared for a lot of self-imposed homework if you want a good final mark in her courses.
The same student probably wrote 3x below, after realizing how badly they must have failed the exam. I personally went up to thank Shamsa for a great semester at the end of the exam. 99% of the time, she lectured without ref to any notes and responded to questions without referring to a textbook-hardly a sign of a prof who doesn't know her stuff.

Shamsa is disorganized and regularly late to class. She seems to get flustered with questions and occasionally confuses people with her answers. She is a fair marker, maybe even a little on the easy side. She is friendly, approachable, and always available during office hours. She definitely knows her stuff, but her delivery needs some work.
Shamsa is a very nice teacher who tries her best to cover all the basics that you should know for the quizzes and exams, you are responsible for reading the rest of the material from the course pack and textbook. Her marking is fair, and her quizzes are easy. Overall, a GREAT teacher =D, I would take another class with her again!
I really enjoyed her style of teaching! Instead of just showing boring powerpoint slides she would write and draw everything she was lecturing about, which sunk into my brain. Her quizzes were fair, and she gives partial marks which really helps. She does come late all the time lol, but so do I =P. She once laughed at my lame joke!=D =D =D
nice lady, horrible teacher- constantly late and literally prepares the quizzes an hour before class and does not prepare for lecture. Unprofessional, Confusing, goes off on tangents all the time.Does NOT accept feedback from students and is very defensive.
Shamsa is an AWESOME teacher. I completely disagree with the comments below. Yes, she is constantly late by a few minutes, but that is her ONLY flaw. GREAT teacher otherwise. Our class had the highest midterm avg of all the 1103 classes.
Very nice person but quite disorganized and always comes at least 10 minutes late. An okay teacher, but gets quite confusing sometimes. She`s on the easy side when it comes to marking.
Ok teacher. Very unorganized, normally late, goes off topic often but she is very easy and is nice.
She is always late, and not by a few minutes, anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. She has even missed a few classes! She's not good at explaining things and she confuses herself sometimes. she prepares her test right before class, so on quiz days she's even more late than usual. Her tests are easy and she marks easy, but you won't learn much
I feel that Shamsa's teaching prepared me well for the exam today. I left with a good feeling. The student below is making things up. NO classes were missed.
DITTO!!!
No that person is definitely NOT making things up! She even left us hanging on the review day for the final! Lots of excuses, confuses herself, second half of the semester didn't teach anything just told us to that we should know this stuff anyways because we should be doing the required reading...she does not prepare you for the final.
Oh well, I liked her anyways. And I understood her explanations & felt very well prepared for the final exams.
Kind and compassionate instructor who deserves the same from us. Shamsa looked positively unwell on the last day of class, but taught anyway, rather than cancel. Plus she held an extra optional class the day before the exam. I would NOT want the student below for my nurse or my children's nurse. Ever.
SHE IS ALWAYS LATE. There was literally not a single day where she was not late by at least 25 minutes. However, her tests are fair and she marks easily. She gets off topic sometimes and confuses herself sometimes but in the end she makes sure that the students know what is right.
Shamsa is a great proff! although she is ALWAYS late, she explains the material well and her weekly quizzes are extremely easy (mark boosters for sure). however i felt sort of unprepared for the final. all in all she is a good teacher.
Not helpful. She refuses to do propre review classes. Give weekly quizes which she claims are GPA boosters, when in fact they are not! Say one thing, then does the other. AVOID HER!
I've never had a worse prof. She has no idea how to teach and is consistently late. She took 30 minutes away from class to mark an exam the day we returned from a one week reading break. She confuses herself, gave us irrelevant information instead of a review for our exam, and is a joke. This class is entirely self taught. Run.
Trips over her words, notes are poorly written, gets side tracked. As everyone else has said, she is always late. Took 30 minutes out of class time to mark a 20 question quiz AFTER we had a week off. If I didn't already know everything from previous courses I would be totally confused by the material.
I have taken both with Shamsa. She is a great prof. Makes you write down everything so it sticks in your head. Tells you what is important for the exams. Also a very interactive prof. Always asking questions to keep you involved. Textbook reading required esp for 1110.
Have taken both with Shamsa. Great prof. Makes you write down everything so it sticks in your head. Tells you what is important for exams. Also a very interactive prof. Constantly asks questions to keep you involved in her lectures. Passionate about subject. Textbook reading a must esp for 1110.
She's so scatterbrained and sometimes it seems like she doesn't know what she's talking about. She didn't show up to half the classes or would be very late. We had a lot of subs. To pass you need to do a lot of studying on your own and read as much of the textbook as you can.
Easy marker, very, very unorganized!!!!
She is consistently late and scatter brained. She does write out notes and diagrams on the board, but often loses her train of thought or confuses herself. Reading the textbook is a must. Any topics covered in a lab she doesn't go over and claims you learned on your own. In her "review" classes she teaches new things. Wouldn't take her class again.
Shamsa has a quiz every week and all her quizzes are easy, just be very detail. She gives away tons of hints so attending classes is a good idea. One thing i didnt like she didnt prepare you for the final, reading your textbook is a must for the final.
I liked her lectures. She was good at explaining the material clearly and wrote important notes on the board making it easier for us. She was a fairly easy marker as long as you study and understand the material and key points you should be good in her class.
Shamsa is super nice, and always ready to help you. She can be a bit disorganized with lectures, but writes key things on the board and ensures that everybody understands the material. She would also give us hints for weekly quizzes! My class was fun and comfortable thanks to Shamsa.. I would take future bio classes with her!!
Shamsa is a good teacher. She will entertain all your concerns in every way. She gives good feedback on quizzes and points out where you are good at and what you have to improve on although sometimes, she confuses herself during discussions. Overall rating: She's a good pick!
was always 5 to 15 min late to every class. very scattered and gets off topic very easily. very basic power points and notes. very confusing, so you must read the textbook and teach yourself to do well. anything done in labs, she claims is self taught and won't waste time on those topics in class. taught a lot of new material in review classes.
Shamsa is so helpful with what will be on the exam and quizzes, she clearly wants everyone to do well and cares a lot about students. She helped me understand bio and receive a high grade thank you so much!
Worst teacher I've ever had! She marks you against your peers, but if she gets compared to other professors, she will fail. Horribly. She's unorganized and always late. She rushes through every lecture and will not go in detail about important stuff on the final, so avoid her!!!!
She is one of the nicest profs I've experienced so far at Douglas College and her quizzes are very fair if you show up for class. If you develop a one on one relationship with her and keep and open dialog, she will be a termendous resource. Communication with her is very important.
Shamsa is a nice lady and she really goes out of her way to help others. She's very scattered and unorganized. She'll often give hints for her quizzes and often things from the quizzes end up on the midterm. She likes it when you write a lot in your answers and make it look like you know what you're doing.
Shama was a good teacher but she was always late to class., she also gets off topic very easily and doesn't go into details on any subject. She means well and really cares about her students but can be a bit confusing sometimes. Easy A.
Very caring and tries her best. Seems a bit lost sometimes but other than that, she is a great prof.
Nice, but not a great teacher or presence in the classroom. Gets stressed easily, notably when students ask her questions. Kind of need to walk on eggshells around her. Drags things on and gets mixed up OFTEN. She also quizzes you on her powerpoints whereas she should be quizzing you more on the course manual content to prep you for the final.
I've enjoyed learning from Shamsa. She does get sidetracked and lose her train of thought once in awhile, but she is a very caring and solid teacher. She doesn't just go over her slides - she takes the time to explain thoroughly and write down important points (that will most likely show up on the quizzes and tests). Fair marking, weekly quizzes.
Shamsa is a very inconsistent prof. Beaware of the quizzes formats changing so many times, making you feel unprepared. Doesn't prepare you for midterms&final at all, and doesn't give the right information and details on what to prepare for. To do good in this course read the textbook! And ask other stud. on what materials they have heard to study 4
Shamsa is one of those rare instructors who actually cares about students. Her slides are awesome. I didnt use textbook once. she also gives great class notes on top of the lecture notes and I like how she talks out her notes as she writes:). Fair marker if u do the work. She can be a lil absentminded, but her other qualities make up for it IMHO.
Very kind and an easy marker. However the lectures are beyond painful. She spends a significant amount of confusing simple concepts and really only covers about 1/3 of what is needed for the midterm and final exam. You'll only miss out on bonus questions on weekly quizzes if you don't go to class.
Shamsa is a very nice caring prof. she gives lots of hints if you attend class. her quizzes are easy, but her lectures can sometimes be a bit scattered.
She is the best teacher I have ever had in douglas. Clear to understand and give easy quizes ( her quizes are based on the lecture note). She writes important notes on the board and give hint what's going to be on final and midterms. I never opened the book , just attended her classes and got A. Definitely recommend her.
This prof is just a bad teacher. Lectures don't make sense with the material. Class attendance is necessary just so you can copy one or two sentences off of the boards that will on the weekly quiz. I HATED going to class, she's so frustrating and tool so long to set up that she only ended up lecturing for 30 min. also very repetitive.
I honestly really enjoyed having Shamsa as a prof. While she can be a tad absent-minded, it's just because she's passionate about the content and clearly gets lost in her own thoughts. She's hilarious and very up-front about what's going to be on the quizzes and midterms, often gives "hints" about bonus questions (aka giving you the full q&a lol)
She doesn't teach this class often, super unprepared, 8/10 times would show up late to class. didnt have any of her own notes. borrowed slides from her colleagues. show up to class as she gives you hints on the quizzes. irrelevant long tangents about plants/animals in a human a&p course. didnt finish all of material of class so went in final blind
She is an okay instructor and clearly wants her students to do well. She spends quite a bit of time going over quizzes and reviewing material before we start them. Although she never seemed to stay on track with her lectures and they would often spill on to the following week which I found confusing to follow. Powerpoints are not the best too.
You can tell Shamsa wants her students to do well. She is a great teacher, passionate about biology and is clear about what will be on the quizzes and exams. She can be a bit scatter brained, making simple mistakes, but they are mistakes that are always corrected and ones that everyone knows the difference to. Lots of reading and must attend class
Shamsa does have a tendency to be slightly scattered with her lectures, but she works hard to make the information clear to the students. She tries to give lots of opportunities for bonus marks to bump up the weekly quiz grades. This is definitely a class that requires lots of reading and review in order to be successful!
She is a great prof and taught us so much!
She knows her stuff and is there for you if you need help, like I did when temporary health issues arose.
This class is easy if you put in effort. She lectures all class and we do all our readings at home. There is no homework assignments; however, there are weekly quizzes (but they are very easy if you do the reading). She is not the best at lectures as she consistently doubts what she is saying and trails off. She does give bonus assignments often.
I loved taking this class. There is A LOT of material to learn but if you put enough time aside every week you can definitely do well. Shamsa does a great job at telling you what you need to know, and going over things that may be unclear. The course itself is pretty heavy because of the amount of material but this prof is great. Interesting course
If you dont show up to class and miss the lectures Theres a high possibility of failure. A lot of her in class quizzes are based on her lectures not the notes.
If you wanna take this class, maybe you should reconsider your choices!!! This class has nothing but frasturation!!!
She's nice, but never prepared. Lectures are all over the place and scattered, making your notes look very disorganized. Because of this, learned absolutely nothing from class and had to re-teach myself everything from the textbook. Also if asked a question, she responds with something that leaves you more confused. Take class with another prof
Unorganized, repetitive, frustrating. Not only is she boring/monotone but she is so awful at teaching. Avoid her is possible.
Loved Shamsa's class. She was very straightforward and clear with her course materials, and always made an effort to follow up on things she was unsure on during class. She really cares for her students and wants them to do well, and as long as you stay abreast of the material it's easy to do well in the class.
Very scatterbrain. She is all over the place with her lectures. She is not a bad teacher, as she does care about the students and is passionate about the subject but she is not the best at explaining and it is clear she is not prepared when she comes to class. Shamsa does give lots of bonus marks for the quizzes though.
shamsa is probably one of the worst profs i've ever had. she can't finish one thought for the life of her and won't admit to her mistakes. she's also incapable of answering questions without second guessing herself; i honestly would never wish her upon any student. tests are nothing like what she teaches, only good thing is bonuses on quizzes
I am so thankful to have Jessa this semester. She really cares about her students and be willing to take extra time to help students as much as possible. Although this course is very much material heavy and lots of memorization, as long as you keep up with her lectures and do lots of practices then you should be okay.
Shamsa is a very nice and caring lady. However I don't think she was meant to teach. She uses notes that I can only assume are borrowed from other biology teachers, as she always reads the notes WORD FOR WORD. She does not elaborate unless specifically asked, and sometimes does not know the answer. Had to teach myself. Avoid if possible.
During class, Shamsa used the whiteboard to explain difficult topics. For questions she didn't know the answer to, she came back with the answer next class. During Covid, she did a few lives which I couldn't attend so watched the recordings and every time I had a question, I emailed her and she wrote me back with a detailed response. Take her!
Shamsa is highly respected at Douglas for a reason. She's kind, she cares about her students, and most importantly, she's clear on her expectations. What's not to like? Thank you for everything, Shamsa!
If you show up and pay attention in class, you'll do well. I was able to get an A+ without killing myself because Shamsa helped up prepare for the exams and the exams were fair. Yes she sometimes gets a little confused when she is lecturing but she will go over something until you understand it. I personally enjoyed her class and would recommend!
Shamsa's very kind. She can be a bit scatter-brained at times, but she makes sure that the information she gives is accurate. She doesn't have dedicated office hours, but appointments can be made anytime. Her quizzes help bump up your grade, and many announcements are made on Blackboard. She appreciates participation, and it helps in the long run.
She was alright. Her lectures were okay but she always seemed unprepared for them and as if she didn't really think about them until the day before. The quizzes were a little unfair sometimes, and your grade basically is your quiz average. She told us not to email her, but when I did she was somewhat alright to work with. Textbook doesn't help. Meh
Shamsa is by far the worst professor I have ever experienced in my life. Shamsa does not give back any feedback on how you are doing but rather just a low grade. Shamsas weekly quizzes are extremely difficult as she uses the most complicated language in order to confuse you, and tests on material that she never herself explained nor taught to us.
DO NOT TAKE A COURSE WITH SHAMSA!!!! Every class, Shamsa shows up extremely unprepared and at times illustrates she is completely unaware of the material that she is teaching. Most class time review is spent with her talking about her cat. If I could give Shamsa a rating of 0 I would do so.
Love the synchronous live classes and bonus mark questions on each quiz! Professor Jessa quickly replies to all my emails and has addressed all my questions and concerns so far. Study the slides and do the reading and you'll do well.
The class was endurable but very boring. You can notice that the prof wants you to succeed and attempted to help students as best as she can. But for an intro class she throws around complicated terms and her lectures are unprepared and confusing. The material barely helped for the weekly quizzes. I relied more on the manual more than the prof.
don't take this prof, literally wait a semester if u can. i had her in person and she can't teach, has no idea what she's doing and im pretty sure she talks to herself when she thinks no one is listening. the final was impossible and she yells at her students when they ask basic questions. she crazy so good luck.
She's very caring. I rescheduled my first lab, then accidentally went to the wrong campus (a simple mistake, but also my fault). I emailed her, apologizing, and she convinced the lab to give me the online material for students who missed it due to illness, even though I wasn't sick. I'm not fond of biology, but I am fond of her.
Shamsa Jessa is an excellent professor. Her class is very encouraging, bonus marks are given out for participation, and she is quick to respond to emails. She is very personable and you can tell that she cares and wants you to succeed. Textbook was optional, I bought it but barely used it. The lecture slides given is exactly what you are tested on.
Shamsa is a great professor! Its clear that she really cares about her students, and wants you to do well. She gives out a lot of bonus marks, and has activities planned for classes so its worth your while showing up. Textbook was required, but in her syllabus she says its optional, so it wasn't great buying a textbook I never opened.
One of my favourite professors. Encourages participation without pressuring students who do not wish to answer questions. Very generous with marks and will give partial marks if you are almost correct. Explains topics thoroughly and will prepare you well for the midterm and final with weekly quizzes. Definitely would take again
