All of the info you need is on her slides (+her slides are clear and easy to follow), so you don't have to stress about getting all the info down in class. She really cares about being fair to her students, and she wants you to succeed and learn. Her grading is also spread out, so you do NOT need to worry about 1 exam that is 100% of your grade.

She is a very good professor and is very understanding and receptive to critiques and/or concerns. She allows up to a week extension on weekly depth assignments, as long as you ask 24hrs before they due date, so don't hesitate to take advantage of that when needed. Try to make sure you participate to make class more engaging.

I believe that Professor Shanahan did a wonderful job of providing the material in a visual manner. As a visual learner, I loved that she provided the powerpoints with the material that she presented in class. This aspect of the course helped me succeed the most because most of her quizzes, activities, and work stemmed from the class lessons.

Interesting material in a class that helps develop your ability to read, understand, and present research papers. Labs are primarily in groups which is helpful, especially as someone who had never used MatLab before. The class has a lot of assignments but Dr. Shanahan is mindful of not overwhelming students and gives very clear expectations.

I was excited to take this course! Dr. Shanahan is very attentive and cares about her students! One thing that wasn't my favorite was reasons for points being taken off.she can be nit picky. it can be defeating. in the long run, I feel like I will be more professionally prepared and aware of my work in my career.

Dr. Shanahan's Sleep and Circadian Rhythm class was a great depth class. It is structured a lot like senior sem where it is mainly reading research articles and presenting them throughout the semester. She is very kind and approachable and is willing to work with students. Only thing I didn't like is that she took a long time to grade assignments.

Dr. Shanahan's class was very very tough, but I do think I learned a lot and became a better student by taking her class. There is a lot of reading and discussions and very few lectures, but the articles we read are interesting. As long as you complete the work, follow the rubrics, and take advantage of office hours, you will do good in her class.

Great class for F8 credit that gives a solid overview of many topics within psychology. Textbook is not required. All PowerPoints are posted to canvas. Complete the research requirement early (they are not difficult). Always grades according to a rubric and assignment due dates are generally constant. Also gives many extra credit opportunities.

For a lot of the assignments, you'd think they would be graded on completion (such as lab reports), but she grades pretty brutally. On quizzes, it seemed like she was always trying to fool us which was tough. Lastly, this class gave good practice for giving long presentations, but the grading was intense even if you showed a lot of effort.

Dr. Shanahan's Neuroscience of Sleep class has the heaviest course load I've had at Rhodes. She is a very nice person and is always available for office hours but tends to not always be accommodating when it comes to due dates. A very cool class! I appreciate how I was able to grow as a student but I am exhausted and don't think I could have taken this class for more than a semester. The class is very work heavy, which can help or hinder your grade. Be sure to give yourself enough time to start and finish assignments or else the class will become even more difficult.

Professor Shanahan is passionate about neuroscience topics. She is great at describing research papers. You will build presentations skills and learn more about sleep. On the other hand, this class has a really rapid pace with at least 5 assignments each week. If you do not have time to study, or if you miss class often, Do Not take this class!

This class is a great option for students looking for a neuroscience senior seminar. The class requires a lot of effort outside of the classroom in terms of reading and preparation for presentations, however, if you put in the effort, you will get the grade that you deserve.
