Interesting class discussions and subject matter. It is not a "skate" class, you will have to spend a good amount of time reading and studying if you want to get a good grade on the tests. The teacher is very helpful if you just ask. I recommend this teacher if you truely want to learn Psychology!
Great guy, likes to lecture. You have to study though alot.
He is great teacher, but if you want to pass this class you really need to study your _ss off. You will really need to put in alot of effor to pass this class. He is a great professor with great stories, though. Will have to "READ" each chapter. His reviews really didn't help much. You have to put in work for this class.
Very very hard class!! Trys to trick you on tests! I don't recommend him as a teacher!
fun class if you like to discuss everyday topics. very open minded and likes to play devils advocate alot. hard class. all tests are essay but its not impossible to pass. all i can say is outline outline outline
Definitely not a skate class. You have to READ each chapter, line for line.
very nice guy and good teacher. very interesting class. you will have to study though, but you will learn alot as you do. tests in this class are multiple choice from the test bank.
Too much of the grade is based solely on tests....They're all ESSAY and very intricate.
I enjoyed having Mr. Carpenter.
Only class I have ever withdrawn from. Tests are outrageous, and I think it is very wrong to attempt to teach psychology and sociology at the same time. A doctor in sociology once told me, sociologists and psychologists are often at odds with each other on issues. I believe this is true. Also, the class would be more enjoyable if he showed films...
Excellent!
He is a very good instructor and very great person. Do not take his class if you expect an easy A. He definetly makes you work for your grade!
Mr. Carpenter is a wonderful teacher! This class is by no means an easy A, but absolutely worth taking. He explains things in a way that you can really understand and he makes the class interesting. If ever you need help he is very good at explaining. You must study, pay attention in lecture and read the chapters thoroughly.
Mr. Carpenter is an awesome instructor and I really enjoy him.
This teacher is absolutely horrible.. when all he wants to do is teach "outside the text"!!! and the tests are about the text! then why not teach the class online? we don't pay for inclass time for him not to do his job.. i will NEVER take another class if he is the teacher!!!
I was very intereted in the field of Sociology before I took this class (online) If it were a seated class for me I would have dropped it after the first day. Horrible teacher, he has no interest in helping you , just getting through the syllabus. And then when students complain, you get very cold email responses, harsh grading, and demeaning comment
He was tough but fair, a great teacher!
He is an awesome teacher. Not the teacher you want if you are looking for an easy A. He rarely teaches out of the book because you are expected to have read the material on your own time to prepare for tests. He is also willing to help out students that truely want to EARN a good grade and not just have it handed to them.
He is a great teacher! If you are interested in an easy A don't take his class. He expects effort to attain a grade related to your effort.
Honest when he claims to not teach the test. Loves to bring outside experience inside the classroom. Really have to read the chapter a few times before the test to score well. Great guy.
i love him
The first day of class with Mr. Carpenter you want to drop his class, but as you go, you find out that all he wants is effort and hard work, a very important tool for those attending a four-year college in the near future. I ended up with a B in the class, but I do not regret the time spent. Great teacher!!!
After I had him for general psych, I made sure that he was the professor I signed up with for my other soc/psych classes. The tests are hard, but not impossible. I loved his lectures.
Oh Mr. Carpenter.. By far the HARDEST class I took this semester. But that was refreshing! He does care about the class, and tries to help, but you just have to read the book and know that book well to ace the tests. He's interesting though, very knowledgable. I would take his class again.
hes a really good teacher who really cares about the students he teaches... i would take his class again if he was teaching something else in my degree program. the class isnt that hard, just be sure to write the paper and pay attention in class and odds are in your favor to pass. hes a GREAT teacher.
Like the others said he does seem like a hard@$& at first. He is not. He just expects you to work at a college level. He is a great person once you get to know him. He really cares about what he teaches and makes things interesting.
Great teacher! Loves what he does! A little tough and wish he'd done more than just have students read and take tests but... Overall enjoyed class!
He is a great teacher but not an easy teacher. Im a 4.0 student and I didn't pull my grade up to an A in his class until the very end. If you do what he instructs you to on the first day of class you will do fine and you will leave the class knowing your stuff. I would definately take him again. Prepare to spend a lot of time reading.
I was very nervous at first because of his reputation when I began his class. He will clearly go over his expectations on the first day(which are not difficult to follow) As long as you pay attention and read the text book you will do well in class.
I wasnt very impressed. Actually he was kind of weird. I've had better instructors.
Shane Carpenter is a good teacher. He is not difficult at all. He does not demand too much work from you, and if you read the chapters you can pass the tests. He seems like a nice guy and he loves what he does.
He teaches with powerpoints created by the textbook company and posts them online for your convenience. His tests come straight from the textbook. He gives no projects or homework assignments, just multiple-choice tests and one tiny paper assignment. His expectations are clear and his class is streamlined. He's as cold as ice.
He is one of the worst, most irresponsible teachers i have had the displeasure of having to be around.
Don't take any of his classes, if you have enrolled, try to switch, he has favorites and the students who don't kiss up to him suffer. Very unorganized, and unprepared. Brings up his personal life in class, and somehow incorporates irrelevant inappropriate material into the lectures.
Total bro. Take his classes....period.
not as bad as people make him seem. Uses slides mostly but you will have to study for his tests.
Teaches with powerpoints and with lectures. Seems really intelligent plus he's totally sexy so it isn't bad listening to him talk. :P You definitely need to study for the tests though and read the text. Great instructor...thinking about taking another class with him. You won't like him if you're lazy, if not you have no worries.
Is it against Coastal policy to ask an instructor out on a date? ha
love him!
love his class, he is a good teacher. and he is hotttt which makes it all the more fun :)
I didnt like his sociology of the family class for many valid reasons and i was not happy with the grade i received but I sort of believe that he is doing the best job that he can and that with all of his personall family stuff it makes sense for him to do what he does-and it was my problem that i didnt learn all of te information i should have :)
HE WAS AWESOME. GIVES EXAMPLES FOR EVERYTHING AND MAKES IT INTERESTING, BUT DON'T THINK THAT'S GONNA GET YOU BY, YOU MUST READ THE CHAPTERS! GOT A B IN THAT CLASS BUT IF I WOULD HAVE READ THE CHAPTERS COMPLETELY SINCE DAY 1 I WOULD HAVE PULLED OFF AN A! RECOMMENDED!
The class was very hard, but he made it interesting. My grade was low because I missed a test or two and the makeup tests were even harder. But he is very easy on the eyes.
I loves his class. He had lots of great stories to help put things into prospective. If you read the book and make detailed flash cards, it is super easy. I passed with a 92 or 93 average.
Whether or not you will like him depends on what kind of student you are. I love his classes because he does not give ANY work, only like 5 or 6 tests on two chapters each, I also read the ENTIRE chapter that he covers THEREFORE, if you are lazy and does not read or study you probably won't do good. the tests are all multiple choice so....
Class was interesting, but consisted entirely of power point. The test were generated from the publisher and contained questions that did not seem to be important to the material. Student must read the chapters thoroughly and remember all details, even small details that may not seem important. Recommend class, but must be motivated to learn.
Very interesting man. Definitely nice on the eyes but his class is difficult. You have to be very motivated. There is a test after two chapter every time. They are about 50 questions, multiple choice. 25 on the first chapter and 25 on the second. Pretty simple as long as you read. No homework is assigned.
His class was lecture-based and he used PowerPoint everyday. It was a fun class though. He always gave good examples when lecturing. He's down to earth and he's funny. He is helpful. Great teacher, I honestly don't know why there is so much negativity directed towards him. His class isn't super easy, but just do the reading and you'll do fine
If you have this teacher for next semester I would highly recommend you switch out. His tests are based off a powerpoint & don't think you can pass the test without reading the entire chapter. His class is very hard, no homework is given, and there's only extra credit opportunity. He plays favorites, so don't expect to pass if you aren't one.
This was the hardest class I ever took! Every little detail is on the test. But He's fair and if you need help and really want to do good in class this instructor'll spend extra time with you to explain material.Just be serious, respectful and study hard, you'll do fine then. But if you want an easier class, skip this instructor!
Teacher was great! I love his classes. If I could take every one of them, I would. He is very fair, tells you in the beginning of the semester what is expected. He isn't the easiest but definitely not the hardest. Exceptional at what he does. Love him
All of his lectures are based off of powerpoints. The class is boring, but the concepts are interesting. You HAVE to read the chapter on your own otherwise you will not pass the exams. He explains that at the beginning of the semester. If you read the chapters the class is easy.
Great Instructor, made learning psychology fun and interesting.the class is hard if you don't study, but if you study your powerpoints chapters and study your txt book chapters you will do fine.
Mr. Carpenter is a wonderful teacher. I learned a lot in his class. If you need help, you can go to him for that, and he will try his best to do that. You do need to read the book to pass the class. I would definitely recommend him for anyone. However, his class requires effort, if you're not willing to do that, don't take his class.
Good on the eyes ;) Lectures are all power points that help you understand the concepts but they will not be apart of the test. You have to literally read the chapter that will be on the test and your golden! Extra hint...for the final exam, his study review guide is in answer order of how the questions are placed on the final test.
If you enjoy listening to middle-aged men talk about themselves constantly, this is the class for you! SO unhelpful, rude, and inappropriate. He talked about male reproductive organs (can't write p3nis on here) all the time. It was a weird and pointless class. Learned about his life, not the material. It was lame.
Mr. Carpenter does provide a lot of information via powerpoints but that is simply to glide over the chapters. We held great debates in his class, great ideas were thrown around. We discussed further into topics that were interesting. He's a good teacher. He bring the information to and understanding but you have to try in order to pass.
Mr.Carpenter is very knowledgeable about the matter at hand although he teaches strictly from power points. You do have to make sure you read the chapters thoroughly to pass the tests. He is very upfront at the beginning about what is expected from you and how he runs the class. Will help providing it's on his time. Not an easy class but worth it.
Tests are way too hard. The tests are on things that he doesnt even teach about. Dont take his class it was very hard and I learned nothing
HOT HOT HOT MAN. He is a great teacher in my opinion. You have to study to pass, just like any other class. no surprise there
Lectures deviate from the book, tests don't match either one, and his tests are confusing. After studying over spring break and re-reading each chapter I still had a hard time. I dropped the course because I need at least a B. Oh and only 13 of our class passed the first test, no one made above a B.
I took this class a while back, but it's what's to be expected of a college class. You read the assigned chapters (best before class) and then he lectures over the subject with power points to help you better grasp the material with good examples. There's an extra credit essay (optional). No it's not an easy A. But this isn't high school...
My first thought was that he was extremely attractive but as soon as he opened his mouth and started lecturing, I just wanted to put my hand over his mouth. I hope you bought a hard copy of the textbook because it is going to be your BIBLE. Read the textbook. Study the textbook. BECOME THE TEXTBOOK!
Awful. Do not take his class!
The tests ARE tough, but the point of a college class is to learn for a career. I have gotten almost perfect scores on every test, so it isn't impossible to do so. The best way to pass is to read. His lectures get into the material and how to apply them but you will have to read the chapters. The paper is an easy A I enjoyed this class a lot!
He gives very interesting lectures for every class period. He connects the material to stuff you care about and will get. The tests are hard though, but if you read the chapters you should do fine. Not much other than tests are graded. It was my favorite class of the semester.
Good Luck
When I took him, he only gives you tests as any work/grades. You have to read the chapter to understand what's going on & actually study.
You have to read the text or you won't pass his tests. The only grades are the chapter tests and one writing assignment, so the tests are crucial.
Passionate about what he teaches and very thorough. Gives an a great test review. Wish he taught more classes
If your passionate about learning this is the teacher for you. This class is not an easy A. Your grade will reflect your effort.
Fantastic Teacher! Gives great real world examples for concepts that are otherwise difficult to grasp. Make sure you read the chapter and you will be fine. Does good test review before each test, write this down. He makes you work for your grade but you really learn in his class.
Fantastic teacher! Great with lecture and material presentation, gives real life examples to help you understand the material. The only grades in his class are his tests and one writing assignment. READ READ READ! Read the chapters, his power points are a general overview.
He is quite charming and easy on the eyes. His lectures consist of giving examples on the things your learn from the book. The class is mainly him just storytelling, but it helps you remember the material you basically have to teach yourself. The textbook is not optional and it will be your best friend in this class.
Worst professor I've ever had. One of the worst teachers I've ever known in general. He thinks pretty highly of himself and test questions are written to confuse you. He spends most of the lectures just telling personal stories; the tests don't follow class discussion. Almost every person in my class failed or almost failed. Will never take again.
One of my favorite professors I've had at this college. His tests pull strictly from the book and his lectures / powerpoints are probably 95% of the test as well. I didn't have a book all semester and managed to get a B just using is powerpoint material. I wish I could take him for another class because I enjoyed the discussions a lot as well.
His clas was the most frustrating class I have taken. He only grades by test. No homework but you must read read the chapters and make sure you know what the terms mean. Because his test reviews will only confuse you and there is two answers that almost sound a like in his test making you second guess. His lectures are almost always off topic.
The test are multiple choice and on Scantron. Slow down and read each question. I hate multiple choice and Scranton tests. I second guess my self 100% of the time but thats my fault not the professors. He provides enough information to study with.
AWFUL! the tests intentionally confusing, promotes failure. Treats students like children. EGOTISTIC! often states how much he hates people. Reviews are worthless. Not cute. Seems to not understand its an intro class at a C. College, the average adult doesn't have 10hrsday to devote. I studied a ridiculous amt to no avail. Near impossible A
Smart and does his best with the lectures but his tests are no joke and you better study and read like mad
Wasnt a hard class by far however, he expects you know the material. When he says that the book is your bible, BELIEVE HIM. Please read, only way youre going to pass his test.
Honestly if you are not willing to read for about 6 hours After class dont take him. The book is your bible! If you dont read you wont pass
Really nice and funny. I never took Psy before this class and he definitely made me want to listen and made it fun and funny. You have to read and study a lot because not everything term wise is the only thing you'll see on tests, beware of surprises. He goes over PowerPoints every class the whole class but he's very good at explaining things.
I had him last semester. As an older student (49) I can see why some students disliked him. He treats you like a grown up so leave the H.S. kiddy games for the next class, he wants to teach and he's quick to offer help. If you don't study the book, YOU WILL FAIL! Great sense of humor if the class deserves it! Up to you to pass.
Pretty strict about technology for no reason. Your grade really depends on a tests and thats about it. Youre gonna have to read the book A LOT.
Professor Carpenter is very knowledge, lots of experience in the field. You basically teach yourself in this class. You're expected to read the material, and the lectures are just a review. The tests are hard, I'm an A+ student, and this was my first B. Personally I don't learn by teaching myself, he was just not the teacher for me.
Mr. Carpenter was a great teacher in my eyes. Your grades consist of only a few tests and one paper (which is very easy). You will need to read the textbook on your own time. Despite his lectures being mostly a review, I found them to be really helpful since he provides real world examples and situations.
10/10 would not take any class with him as a professor again. There is zero homework/quizzes/extra credit. Your grade is exams only and 1 essay. He doesn't give study guides or reviews. He says your book is your bible, he absolutely means it! If you do not read/learn every single thing in the chapters, you wont pass. He teaches only w/PowerPoint.
Online Class. He barely communicated with the online course. His structure was terrible. Quizzes were timed while most material was not even in the textbook or PowerPoints. He didn't even grade the written portions until the very last week of grades. I don't know how he is in person, but I recommend NOT TO DO THE ONLINE COURSE! Absolute waste
The lectures are absolutely useless, only study from the textbook. This guy is arrogant and constantly talks about how much he hates people. He's strict for no reason and his tests will either cover general info or minute, insignificant details from the textbook. I learned nothing except to never take his class ever again.
Mr. Carpenter knows his material. If you act like adults, conduct yourself as such, ask intelligent questions, read the material, take notes, and avail yourself of PASS sessions, you will do fine and he'll go out of his way to help you. Put the tech away and don't waste his time; it's as simple as that.
Ah, Mr. C. I met him outside of the online course and he did help me. The online course was basically reading the chapter and testing. 25-minute timed test for 25 questions (NO EXCEPTIONS!) Obviously, open book. He made very few announcements. It was a quiet course with submitting the test once per week. I'm glad it's over!
Professor Carpenter is ok. He only does tests which is just a clear sign of laziness because all the tests are the same since he's stepped into the school. He let my class do one- pagers which helped a lot because he only teaches off the book. Very funny though, he seems to care abut his students and truly wants them to learn. Overall read the book
If I could rate this professor, I would undoubtedly give him a 0/10. You have seven grades (five tests, a paper, and a final), and the lectures venture far off from the material in the book, which is where you will get test answers. The chapters are long, and you will not be allowed to read the book in class. And no electronics in class!
Professor Carpenter has high expectations, but if you read the textbook and engage actively, his class can be rewarding. unstuck study was a big help for study prep.
was not accommodating at all.
Mr. carpenters' class was test heavy and he expected us to spend at least 8 hours a week reading his textbook. He never gave homework, so if you don't test well DONT take this class. He is also extremely rude and is not understanding of personal conflicts.
Quite possibly the worst teacher I've ever had. The ONLY grades in the class are the 6 tests you take over the course of the semester. 50 questions each and one assigned over spring break. Lecture is pure torture and does not cover anything useful for the tests. Doesn't even bother to make them himself and are generated by the textbook.
Lectures connect the key concepts from the text book to the real world. You'll need to read the text book chapters and take additional notes to truly do well on the tests. Mr. Carpenter can come off as abrasive, however, he is actually quite the understanding and accommodating teacher. Interact when he asks questions and talk among one another!
