Great teacher. Helps clarify things when confused. Teaches some story problems with kayaking stories, which is fun.
Exceptional!!! Shane has a great attitude towards math and teaching. At first, I thought his teasts were overly easy, but after checking exams given by other teachers for this class, I realized he was just a great teacher.
AWESOME teacher! The best math teacher I've ever had. Very clear and intersting. I hate math, but if he taught 111 I'd definetly take it from him, just b/c he is so good. Couldn't recommend him enough.
Awesome teacher and VERY hot too!!
Shane was very helpful and I loved having him as a teacher. Would take one of his classes again if I could.
Shane is the best math teacher ever. Very clear and to the point. Highly recommended.
Very cool dude...relates well with students and is really organized when it comes to giving info for notes. I highly recommend him and will take him again
Crystal clear explanations, charismatic and fun person--great instructor. Particularly recommended for people who are uncomfortable with math.
EXCELLENT instructor. Was afraid I was absorbing information too quickly, but realized he is just an AWESOME teacher. Very clear, very helpful, very nice. Best math teacher I have ever had. Take him if you can!
I took math 65 with shane and I was soo nervous because I have always struggled with math. Shane was awsome, very, very helpful. He taught using some of his adventurous stories which made it a lot of fun. I took math 91/92 with Mr. Henderickson and struggled making me afraid of anymore math. But if shane taught math 111 I would be the first person o
An exellent teacher. Loves what he does, is patient, firm, but will work with you , and will encourage you if your willing to work and learn. I would reccomend him to anyone who wants to learn from a great teacher. Awsome job, keep up the good work !!!
Shane is a dream!! He has made Math so much more digestible than it has ever been for me. It's obvious how passionate he is about his students by the way he makes time to meet with them, he wants you to succeed, and when he walks into the Learning Center voices in unison call out his name. Take him if you can....it's worth it!
Yep, Shane is a great instructor. Very clear lectures. He made Algebra easy to understand. Really cute too! Take his class. You'll be glad you did.
the best teacher ever!!! he is so coo, and makes math easy!!!!! he is the best i wish that i could have him as my math teacher all through college.
Shane is an awesome math teacher. He will be telling a story about river rafting, and the next thing you know the math concept will be crystal clear in your mind. I have never had a better math instructor. You will not regret taking a math class with Professor Horner.
The best math teacher ever! I highly recommend him to those of you who are afraid of math. In his class you will feel very comfortable. The teacher loves what he does. Keep it up Shane!!!
Okay first look at the levels when the people are rating him, hes kinda confusing and test are hard. For every little thing you get marked down ie equal signs not lined up. Will not give points for approching a problem at all. Come on! What type of BS is that, but besdie the other teachers he is better the rest are jerks so..here i am in this calss
The BEST instructor I have had. Shane is the best, IF you have a choice, take his class.
first prof i was inspired to rate,he's really great, mellow understandable helpful cool guy, would do in class work help indvdls one on one, open to questions answers even the silliest ones-repeatedly,encougaged students to work together on nearly evrythng and just created a comfortable productive work environment,i had failed 65 earlier & now an A!
Shane is really laid back and a good teacher. If you have any questions he'll help you out. Communicate with him and you'll be solid. He doesn't check homework. Tests are generally easy, no curveballs. Def. one of the best teachers I've had. If you can, take this class.
Shane is a really good teacher. I would have to say one of my favorites.. I hate math , but this class I actually enjoyed. I am going to try and keep Shane as a math teacher for future classes...
Shane's teaching style is thurow with out being tidious. He provides a relaxed helpful, and productive class room environment.
He was organized but his teaching style didn't work for me. I wouldn't recommend him for other students if they have struggles in math.
This guy thinks he's way cooler than he is. This makes his teaching style overly laid-back and sometimes borderline lazy. He doesn't allow calculator use on the majority of the exams. Makes many mistakes when working problems on board, which causes much confusion. Other than that, he's alright.
Great instructor for the lower-level algebra classes at PCC. His main concentration is getting you prepared for the next class, which is way helpful. Nice guy, and very helpful.
Great teacher if you're just getting reacquainted with math. Very laid back, and easy to approach. He makes mistakes while doing problems on the board, but I wonder if that's just to see if you'll notice or not... he always will correct himself. Great low-level math teacher!
I've had trouble in math all my life. I'm back in school in my late thirties working on 2nd bachelor's. Shane is a great instructor, with loads of patience for students' questions. Teaching style new-school, lots of group activities, practice. Very laid back, but is that bad? I'm laid back so. . . I got an A in this class. First in my life!
Shane is hands down the absolute best math teacher around. He's patient, flexible, easy-going, and wants his students to succeed. He's always available to offer help and works to make the subject interesting. Whatever they pay him is not enough for sure. I don't see how anyone can not be grateful to have him as their math instructor.
I'm getting my 2nd degree, had lots of teachers and Shane is exceptional. Very patient + helpful, is determined to help you learn + succeed if you are willing to put in the effort. I hated math, got D's previously, but with work + his excellent instruction, I got an A. I'll definitely take him again if I get the chance.
Great teacher! Shane makes it accessible and applicable to real life which helps make the information stick. Funny, laid back and thoughtful-- he really wants you to succeed.
I liked his approach. He is, like most have mentioned, laid back but not in the sense where he's not teaching you anything. You learn a lot & he prepares you for your next class.
Shane is very patient and really cares about making sure everyone understands the topic at hand. This was a fun & easy class!
I had a ton of anxiety about taking a math class after avoiding it my entire life. By the second day I had a new confidence with Shane's patient and easy to understand style. He moves slowly and never skips a step in his examples.
Shane is a great instructor. He's laid back, knows what he's doing and is very capable of explaining it.
Unfortunately had to drop this class because I couldn't keep up after getting an A in Math 60. Instructor teaches fast. Is extremely laid back to the point he doesn't seem to care about individual students who are struggling.
Not sure why the previous person had an issue. Maybe they never talked to Shane or asked for help. This was my 4th term with Shane, I detest math, and it was not a cake walk for me, but I passed with A's and B's. He was always helpful in the learning center and in class. I just had to ask. He's the best instructor I've encountered.
Great teacher. He teaches concepts clearly for those of us not numerically minded. Always has funny stories to tell, which keep the class entertaining and interactive. Definitely would recommend Shane. I've had him for 2 classes, he's great!
Great teacher through 95. After which he, admittedly, isn't as knowledgeable. While in class he suggested we go onto other teachers if continuing on, which I appreciated but would have love to know before taking his 111C class as well. Bottom line, take Shane for 95 and below because there he knows his stuff!
Shane is very laid back, but perhaps too laid back. I never felt prepared for tests despite attending every class session, and have always done well in math. This was his first term teaching 111b and may have been ironing out kinks. Class work and tests were graded a little too easily, and the final was very different from the review sheet.
Shane has been one of my favorite teachers so far. He is very laid back and fun but also teaches you what you need to know to get through math. His class atmosphere is very relaxed. He's an awesome teacher.
I liked Shane, very laid back and easy going. I would definitely take from him again.
Shane as a teacher really worked for me- he makes Math interesting using his hobby of rafting in math examples when appropriate, and he is approachable, and likable. He was late a few times, but his lack of pretentiousness made up for that! Easy to relate to!
Shane has the patients of Jobe!
Shane was very helpful and patient. I've struggled with Math for years and passed with a B:). He makes it understandable to non-Math types.
Top two math prof. Made me feel like I was more than able to solve even the most difficult problem! Would ABSOLUTELY recommend him if you struggle in math. Can't wait to take him again!
Great teacher, I suggest working your schedule around to get Shane as your teacher. He does a great job preparing students to do well on their homework, quizzes and tests.
Also, MTH 111C and 251: Shane is a great teacher and actually CARES about his students success. He has a very easy and calming demeanor. If you struggle, as I did, with upper-level math I would highly recommend taking Shane. He makes it easy and fun!
He really grew on me. Shane is fantastic if you struggle with math otherwise you might be bored. He gives tons of practice problems and prepares you for exams and quizzes. Easy exams, generous partial points given. He is the most patient teacher I've ever seen, I truly don't see how he stays sane answering the same questions over and over again.
Super-cool dude, just make sure that if you want advance further in math you spend extra time going over material not necessarily included on tests or in lecture. That said, Shane was always helpful and accommodating, and extremely laid-back.
I had Shane for MTH 60 & 65, he is a wonderful teacher. If you pay attention and do your homework it's easy to get an A. He explains things patiently and clearly. Also, he is super cool which makes class fun.
Shane was awesome! He's very patient, explains everything and provides endless amounts of help if needed. I would definitely recommend him!
Shane was really great. Super patient, very nice guy...has a way with his lectures. They aren't boring and he has the ability to explain Algebra in a way that makes sense. It feels like he gives you the information that you need to succeed in future math classes without muddying the information up. Don't take anyone else's class.
I really did NOT like Shane. I had to drop the second week of class because he wanted us to do homework on a section that he hadn't taught. You have to teach yourself out of the book and he answers your questions. He is a BAD teacher and his monotone is horrible. Dont take him if you want to learn.
Shane is a great math teacher. He gives lots of real-world examples (many of which relate to his hobby of kayaking) that make the application of the work much easier to understand. He is patient, treats students respectfully & offers time outside of class to meet with students. Not an easy class, but all the tools available to do well are there.
Shane was awesome! He was by FAR the best math teacher I have ever had. He's SO helpful and always willing to give you what you need to succeed. Highly recommended!
Shane has been a wonderful teacher. I took him for 60, 65, and 95 and received A's in all three. He is very helpful in not making math difficult especially for people who hate it. Highly recommended.
Shane is very nice, understanding, and approachable. He goes out of his way to help his students and is very kind to others. Clac is a hard class in general, but he makes it understandable.
Shane is great but teaching past MTH 95 is not his game. Obviously wasn't too happy about teaching calculus and it really started to show towards the end of the term. Take Shane for anything below maybe 111 and you'll be fine.
I'm surprised at the last comment. I took Shane for Calc I and II and felt very prepared when I entered into university level math.
The most helpful math teacher I've had at PCC. He offers plenty of support and will regularly visit the tutoring center. He knows the work is hard and won't talk down to you if you don't understand it.
I took Shane for summer term and found him to be an awesome math instructor. I would recommend him to anyone wanting to actually learn math and succeed in math 95 and above. He's willing to help if you take the time to ask him. Plus he's totally love kayaking...LOL.... LEM
best math teacher have ever had! Looking forward to taking him again this term. If you hate math or love it, he's your guy!
Shane is BY FAR, the best math teacher I have EVER had. Class is so relaxed. he never moves on if you don't understand. Most of his math problems somehow involve kayaking or river flows! I have never had the world of math become so accessible to me. If you can, just sign up for his class and don't think twice!
Took MTH111b with him, great teacher. Then took his MTH251 class (CAL 1)Winter 2012,felt unsatisfied. CAL 1 is too spacy for his laid back teaching type. Mathlabs which Shane doesn't clarify his expectations, takes too much time and grade out of students. Got B CAL1, then got A in CAL2 with different teacher. He can't teach MTH251 and above well.
Shane teaches his own way of viewing things, which is usually much clearer than the textbook. Make him your first choice for 111C, he's the best.
This professor is super laid back and easy going. Perfect for anyone how's just coming back to school.
Shane was a good instructor, a little too laid back at times, but good.
I have severe math anxiety, and Shane has been such a big help. He's easy going and always willing to stop and explain something simply if you're struggling. I have to complete math 65, and I'm willing to wait an extra term just so I can take his class. Best math teacher ever. And he's funny on top of it!
Shane is a great teacher. Explains the material in a way that everyone can understand and follow. I would say that it is difficult to meet with him outside of class time as he's rarely in his office but he is willing to make appointments if needed. I would definitely recommend Shane to anyone.
Shane was super nice, encouraging and easy to understand. He made sure his lectures were clear, and had them online so people could listen to them when they needed a refresher. Definitely a great teacher!
Shane is a really, really good teacher. Take him. If you put even a little bit of effort in, you will understand every topic. He also has a great collection of bandanas.
VERY easy to understand.
Shane is a good teacher. He is in the tutoring center almost everyday and is more than willing to help you with whatever you need. His class was rather boring to me, and he seemed to take a lot of time on side stories of his own. You don't really use the textbook in this class and could get away with just getting the homework problems from a peer.
Shane is an awesome teacher. He knows what hes talking about and also makes it easy to understand. Its not that easy to pass Shane class but if you come to class everyday and do the homework you will pass easy well and of course understand the material. I highly recommend him for a math teacher!!!
Shane is a really cool dude. He's super helpful and approachable, he has office hours AND does tutoring in the learning center. He's great at clearing up confusion without making you feel like an idiot. He makes the class a breeze with his simple and to the point explanations, and his great tips and tricks. I recommend him to anyone taking MTH111
great teacher! laid back fun and will help you with any questions you have.
Shane is a fantastic math teacher. He's super chill and mild-mannered, soft spoken, but also has a great sense of humor. He gives you a copy of the lesson plans so that you can take notes as he lectures. These proved to be super helpful as study guides. He gives ample opportunity for points and makes himself very available. Best math teacher ever!
Shane is an amazing math teacher. If you have the chance, I suggest you take him. He is passionate and considerate. All the math that he does actually makes sense. I am not a fan of math, but he truly helped me understand what I was doing. I would say he is the best math teacher I've ever had.
Shane is the bee's knees! He is always willing to help, is patient, and I loved the lecture packets he gives. He can be a little mild sometimes so I would suggest taking him during your optimal learning hours.
Shane is the best math teacher I've ever had. I was dreading this class. Math has never been my strong suit. But Shane is so good at making sure that you understand the material before you walk out of the class. Tests are tough, but if you pay attention, he gives you everything you'll need to know beforehand. There are A LOT of group exercises.
Shane was a great professor. This was my first class after a 14 year hiatus from school. There are weekly assignments, but they are only "due" at the big exams. Also weekly quizzes and loads of handouts. The book is hardly cracked in class, but needed for the many homework assignments. Shane is very laid back and thorough with his lectures.
I took Calculus I (251), and this was a really hard class made even harder by bad instructing. You could tell the whole class was not grasping what was going on. He just kept saying "if you don't understand, you need to go to the learning center." I ended up taking it again with experienced Calculus teacher and ended up getting a A.
Shane was OK as a lower level math teacher, but when I took him for Calc 1, it was the worst class I'd ever taken. He confessed it was his first term teaching it in a decade, and he definitely was not prepared for it. He used a bunch of other instructor's handouts, and seemed confused on how to convey the fundamentals of Calculus to us.
The most laid-back teacher ever! Makes you feel like it's almost easy. Math does take attendance, diligence, and repetition but Shane makes it accessible. "Homework isn't graded but points are given for doing it (don't slack!) only 4 graded problem sets are given - can use any resource. Never picks the hardest problems for quiztest - no tricks.
I have taken Math 111 with another teacher at PCC and found Shane to be SO much more clear about what was going on. He gives great feedback on tests and quizzes. He's available for help if you ask. He won't make you ask for help unless you want it. He's super laid back and easy to get along with. Never tries to trick you on exams.
Has a way of making math seem easier. Is willing to work with you regardless of the situation. Just ask!
Great professor, super clear, easy to get along with, fair. Would highly recommend.
Shane is a very helpful with explaining math in a way that is understandable. He always makes a effort to meet with students and help them when they are struggling.
Shane is an AMAZING math teacher. He is great at explaining things and is very prompt when it comes to returning assignments. Math has always been a weak subject for me, but he is very clear in his lectures and uses many examples to make it understandable for everyone. There is group work, which is fun an helpful for the learning process as well.
This was my first college math course and as someone who struggles with math I was nervous. Shane was a fun teacher and very good at explaining concepts and formulas. The videos created by his digital pen were very useful. He is always available after classes to help with questions and very relaxed. I'm looking for an excuse to take MTH60 with him.
I can honestly say that the reason I love Math and even more importantly, the reason I have been successful in this subject, is because of Shane. He really cares about what he teaches and the student's outcome. He is very accessible and approachable and breaks things down so that you really learn. He is by far the best teacher I've ever had.
He is a hard grader, good person just not a person to start off with math for first time. I agree with the other comment on here. His tests do make me worried and upset with how much his points are for them.
Shane is one of the best teachers i've ever had!!!
This instructor has been very hard on tests. He grades them hard. The majority of his class are not passing because of his tests. Some are passing, but very few. Do not take him for math 20.
He is amazing teacher, I took math 60 & 95 with him and passed and took math 111 with a different teacher and got a bad grade so am excited to repeat it with Shane this term and am confident that am going to pass it this time.
he is really amazing.
Shane is the best math teacher I have ever had. We used an online homework program for this first time this term and he made sure that he used it himself and would explain how the program operated. He is a very clear lecturer and has a very calming presence as well as cool stories about his hobbies. Take his classes if you can!
Took Shane for MTH98. As someone who hasn't done so well in math, this was actually my least stressful class this term and I felt really ahead of the game. Shane is very lenient, understanding, and patient with his students. Don't hesitate to ask questions in class. If you have an otherwise heavy workload, this might be a good class for you.
Shane is an amazing math instructor. He is absolutely phenomenal at what he does. His learning style is very unique. If you want to learn math and learn to love it plz give him a shot, you will not regret it. He has lots of office hours and replies to emails usually within 2 hours. He does a lot of group activities, he grades on quizes, & hw quick.
Shane is an incredible teacher. I was struggling with my previous math course, but through in class group work and homework assignments, I was able to understand the material and feel very confident in progressing to the next level. Just do the homework and seek help if you need it. He is very understanding and aids in our success.
Great math teacher. Good lectures, plenty of time outside of class to talk to him about concerns, exam rewrite's opportunities, you can even reschedule the final if you're not ready.
Shane is a great and relaxed teacher, he expects his students to do group work and encourages active learning in class. Do his homework and take notes at the lectures and you will pass. The class is segmented at a very reasonable rate of learning. 100% would take again.
Very relaxed teacher, would 100% take Mr. Horner again ! He is always in the learning-center and willing to help you with concepts. Offers extra credit with test corrections. Great experience.
This class is based on in-class group work. Individually you'll have weekly online hw, and excel assignments. Honestly just show up to class and it will be hard to fall behind (and that is coming from me- a student struggling in math). Definitely take Shane's class!
This is a college calculus class so there is nothing "easy" about it. However, Shane Horner gives you every possible chance to succeed. The grading is very easy if you show your work. Do the homework and participate in the labs. Take advantage of his office hours. Success is pretty straightforward you just have to put in the work.
I absolutely loved professor Horner! He's super helpful and understanding if you don't understand something, and he genuinely wants every single student to succeed in his class. The group work he assigned was helpful and made the class more fun, and he gives super detailed practice exams. if you can take his class, DO IT! you won't regret it!!
An amazing math teacher! I have always struggled with math and I havent taken in 10years. I took him during COVID-19 and he was there for every zoom meeting, office hours, he got back to emails everyday of the week. He made math simple to understand. Im taking all of the other leather course through him. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
I took his class online due to COVID. I found that he breezed through topics really quickly and only did a couple of questions per class. He taught differently than how ALEKS taught the problems. To be honest, I did not go to the optional classes, but he had many options to get extra help. I would have enjoyed this class more in person.
He let us use a txtbk that was available for free as a pdf. I love professors that do that. Add that to him already being an incredible teacher. He cares and teaches topics thoroughly and easily. He deserves a 5 rating easily. He is what all teachers should aspire to be!
Shane was awesome! Sometimes his lectures went a little fast, but that's just because he's trying to cover a lot of material quickly. As long as you speak up, he'll clarify anything. In addition to in-class work, we used ALEKS for homework, and that really helped me get a handle on the material. He also loves boating.
Prof Horner was an amazing teacher. He made remote learning an opportunity rather than a hindrance through his use of ALEKS, an amazing online math platform. He is super responsive in class and never makes anyone feel less smart for asking a question. Overall a super chill and understanding person! Take prof Horner if you can, you won't regret it!
The most organized teacher I've had since classes switching to online for Covid. Emails often with grade updates and reminders about everything. Very laid back and has a great pace to his class. If you are scared of math like I was after not taking it for over a decade, go with Shane. He creates a chill and supportive learning environment!
Shane is a pretty awesome teacher hands down Id never thought Id enjoy math after taking a long hiatus from any courses but his class is 10/10 with the style he teaches. Honestly just do your work and study for the exams and youll do amazing.
Shane is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Very caring, and helpful and makes class fun. I took a fully online math class last term and struggled, coming to Shane's class with Zoom Calls has been very beneficial. If you get the chance to take one of his classes, even while online, do!
5 is too low of a rating for Shane. Taking his class took a lot of the stress out of math for me, and I've failed math 111 before. You will be doing group work every single class period, which I hated at first and still dread a little bit, but it really does help you learn the material. Such an understanding and caring teacher! Take his class!
Shane has been by far the best math teacher I've had. I've never been the best at math but I understood everything. He really takes the extra time to make sure that everyone understands what is happening in lectures. Always open to questions, for lack of a better word, he is a very chill teacher. I would take a class from him again in a heartbeat.
This is one of the best math classes I've ever taken and definitely the best online class I've ever taken. Shane really cares about making sure people understand what he's explaining. Homework was pretty easy as long as you follow along in class. Lots of group work, but it's only graded on participation and was actually really helpful.
Shane is very good at what he does, he is flexible and he is caring. He is super mellow and this caused problems for me because since this class was online, it was hard to pay attention. he does use Aleks, and there is homework every week. but he is still a great teacher.
I didn't enjoy this class. I had to teach myself everything we did despite going to every class. He made a lot of simple mistakes despite having the answers right next to him. He would erase and redo the same problems more than once. Almost all of his material was taken from other teachers and Aleks.
Response quickly to students. Helps you understand the material well.
Shane was incredible & I wish I could take him for all of my math classes. He's a clear communicator, accessible, organized, & incredibly patient. It was easy to meet with him outside of class & he used his class time efficiently. It was a lot of homework, but he made me feel successful. I cannot recommend him enough.
Shane is a nice guy, office hours, very responsive. Believes very much in students working it out for themselves, so every class has 1-2 long group work sessions. Very little lecture, and it isn't heavy on explanation. I did a lot of work on my own to really feel comfortable on the concepts. He's a caring teacher - it just did not work for me.
Shane is very accessible outside of class and does answer any questions you have have during class or after. He is very open to office hours, although some of the material is gone through pretty fast and is hard to keep up with. If you miss a class you will be behind. The group work is for participation which is helpful for exams but can be boring.
In my experience, Shane is a great professor. He's willing to walk you through any problem, even on the homework, that you're struggling with. He gives partial credit for problems that you got wrong, but some of the work is right. Attendance is mandatory, as group work in class is a large portion of your grade. Overall, very nice guy.
Shane is a great guy who clearly really cares about students. He is very flexible if you communicate, very good about disability accommodations, he also explains things pretty well. The class was broken up into lecture - group work - break - lecture - group work. So not the best class if socializing is draining for you. He uses ALEKS for homework.
Shane is very receptive to questions and will always explain something if you ask. Homework uses ALEKS which you have to buy for 40 dollars, but other than that it's all free. The homework can be a lot of work, especially if you fall behind. The class was very fun, we do a lot of group work, which is fun if you like talking to people.
Very good calculus teacher. Some of his explanations are a bit confusing, but other than that his curriculum is super easy to follow. Very willing to explain anything you are struggling with.
Shane is excellent in the sense that he is great at providing assistance when you are stuck on whatever problem you may be having trouble with but I found his reliance on the online homework system known as MyOpenMath to be a bit too much. His lectures do provide some good information for the tests, however, I found them to be rather redundant.
Shane is a great professor who makes math engaging. The class has a good mix of lectures and group work, which helps solidify the concepts. Definitely take advantage of unstuck ai and other study tools to prepare - they made a real difference for me.
If you hate math or not good at it Shane is your best option! He makes the material easy to understand, homework is not heavy and is also an easy grader. Best math teacher hands down.
Shane is an amazing professor! He's super understanding and easy to communicate with outside of class. I took trig with him during the summer. There was a decent amount of online homework but if you participate in group labs during class the topics will make sense. Months later I've retained a lot and it's helped me in further math classes. 10/10!
Wonderful professor! Words cannot describe how enriching and positive the classroom environment he cultivated was. The lectures were engaging and easy to understand, even for a math course such as this. I would recommend this class for everyone and anyone who's looking to take MTH111.
