He was a good teacher who knew how to relate the material to the class. I feel more prepared for English 100.
Mr. Underwood is a great teacher! He is very knowledgeable and makes learning fun! I recommend taking his class to anyone who is serious about learning. He's the best!

He is a great professor. It's a lot of hard work but you learn a lot about writing and the world. If you are serious about learning take him.
Hes freaking awesome. The best teacher ever. FREAKING HILARIOUS!! Makes learning fun. Very clear with instructions very helpful but please stay on top of your game!!! he will put u on blast :D but then make you love em after. Just do you work and enjoy the laughs.
Shane is incredibly attractive which made class a little distracting. Other than that, he's a great teacher that keeps the interest level high and forces class involvement. If you're quiet, he'll pick on you. Also, there is a lot of reading and applied writing to class discussions.
He is pretty nice and helpful teacher after you get to know him. His lessons might be quite hard once in a while but just do the homework and you will be good. He's very approachable.
picks on you if you arrive late or if you don't do your work, can often times say rude comments, difficult essay assignments, reading and response homework assignments, easy to talk to if you ask for help. this class requires a lot of hard work and dedication because he is also very extremely picky!
Shane "don't call me Mister" Underwood is a great Professor who combines his love of Philosophy with English to keep things fresh! He's critical and expects students to meet their potential. Critical thinking a must as class participation is part of your grade. You get what you give in this class! Dilate your mind and you'll do fine!
If your not an English major or a GREAT writer. I advised you not to take this professor. He makes you write beyond your english level.A lot of reading and something is due every class meeting. Participation and Attendance is mandatory!
Professor Underwood is defently a great teacher. He is really hard on his essays and everyone needs to participates defetly wants the best for his students and you sure will get out from this class learning something. High recommend this professor. And he cares about his students. =)
Great professor. He has a clear picture of current events and text book material. He discusses relevant stuff in class as well. If you dont participate, he will make you talk by bustin' your nuts.
He is picky, but overall a great professor. He will help if you ask for it and responds to emails. This class gives you a different perspective about life and what is happening around you. I highly reccommend him.
Dont take him if your shy, as he will pick on you. He can be quite sarcastic, rude, and he is also a closet elitist. He secretly loves the praise he gets from the students that suck up to him. However, he is a fair and unbiased grader. I now know how to write an argumentative essay, which I wasnt able to do at the begining of the semster.
Underwood is the best teacher I have thus far had in my entire life. I am forever grateful for all he has taught me. Take his class! Not only is he gorgeous, he is witty, sarcastic, and has a good heart.
I left this class not only writing better, but knowing I have a professor I could go to even years from now with a questions about English. He picks on everyone, learn to take a joke. He knows his stuff really well and his reading responses are free points. Really unbiased grader. Write the way he teaches you and you'll ace every paper.
amazing. a lot of work but very helpful. makes you think, and opens up your perspective. it was a fun class.
WORST PROFESSOR ENGLISH IN PCC..... he is rude, not helpful, and he think he is all that.
He's such a amazing teacher, very nice! I learned to much in class, he opened me to a whole new world of writing.
He's very funny, he picks on everyone so don't get butt hurt! You learn so much in his class, hes very help! he made me into a better writer! He tells you how it is, no softy kid stuff, hes just a over alll great teacher i love him and i wouldnt mind takin him again and again!
Professor Underwood has one of the greatest minds I have ever come into contact with. People who don't like him are the students who are already destined to fail out of college. I have learned so much from this man. The individual who commented negatively a few posts down is a fool, as indicated by his/her writing ability. Take this professor!
Hardest class I ever took at PCC was his class, and I mean that in the best way possible. I believe that he teaches the way a University professor would teach & if you don't want to learn the meaning of hard work then you should definitely take another professor. If you do take him, you won't regret it. And yes, he's easy on the eyes.
I took this class in fall 2010. He is really cool, funny, and intelligent. The class is always fun and entertaining. He is very helpful when i ask for it. I learn a great deal from him. Best teacher I've ever took. You won't regret it for taking him.
He can be intimidating & requires a lot of work, but if you follow his crystal clear syllabus, you shouldn't have any problems. He does tease everyone, but it doesn't mean he doesn't like you. He's caring, funny, & very attractive. He's serious about English. Show respect in class and it'll run smoothly. Also, someone should post a photo of him!
Best professor ever at PCC! The class was very interesting and he is very helpful.
Excellent teacher, yes he is hard and like all of us has his ways but he pulls the best out of you.
Great teacher, however, he is an English major and not a philosophy major...though, he acts as though he were one. He should probably take a course or two. I hope you read this Underwood...
wow man he's got to be hard... but really the best most helpful teacher.... He tought me how to be a better writer!! what a great experience! If you wanna really learn take him.
What a great professor and class. The theory and literature lessons are mind-bending. He really knows how to teach theory and make it applicable to our writing. however, he is tough as nails. If you aren't serious about learning, he's the wrong guy for you. THis guy has changed the way I write as well as the way I think in everyday life.
He is dificult, but a great professor. Sometimes his humor is offbeat, but he makes learning hard ideas fun. My writing has improvved a lot as well.
Shane's class was very informative, intriguing, and challenging. His lectures are interesting and I always look forward to the second part of class where the class discussion turns into somewhat of an AA meeting. He is very helpful and spends a lot of his own free time to help you if you seek help. ps. stop rating yourself in front of your class.
Professor Underwood is really sexy(just stating the obvious) and even though I took his class a while back, the things he taught us still ring in my head. His class is great, and thought provoking. If you like learning, definitely take the class. If you're a slow learner, I don't recommend it.
Great professor, definitely one of the best at PCC. Makes you see the world differently. It is a hard class and he will demand your best. However, he is very easy to talk to and will do his best to help. This class is not for the lazy student, but take it anyway because you get something out of his class
Excellentprofessor. The class is not for lazy people since he expects you to do your work and partiipate in class. A lot of class work, but everything is really worth it to read. He definitely opened my eyes to the REAL world and helped me improve my writing skills A LOT! Take him and you wont regreat it! BTW be read to work your ass off!
Brilliant professor. Clear with solid explanations. This class was a bit like Philo and the interpretations of the books were mind boggling. Simply dazzling.
Came to college to learn at a college level? This is your professor. Insightful, mind opening, great in-depth analysis, and classroom discussion. Do not take the class if you're going to screw off-- he'll call you out. If you want a professor who will give you great feedback, make you a better writer/thinker and help you in your growth, you got him
Highly recommended! He opens you up to the possibilities of the world! If you are absent for a day you are missing out on a lot. Try talking to him in office hours, he is very helpful and willing. It is amazing how he actually tries to understand and connect with his students. The whole class is like a family at the end. go over ur essays with him!
Professor Underwood is great who not only taught me how to write clearer but also the philosophical aspects of the world. His class was eye-opening and for those who want to learn, take his class. It's a very interesting class, but don't take it thinking it'll be easy/ He gives a lot of work. but if you put in the time, it's not too hard of a class
Great class, and great teacher. It is a challenging class, but not impossible. The best advice I can think of is to go to his office hours for help on papers. If you do this, an A is very, very real. He'll tell you exactly what he wants from you, in that sense he is very clear. Also, do NOT take the class if you tend to take things personally.
An inspiring professor that made me a better writer and opened up the fascinating world of philosophy to me. His classes are fun, and deal with thought-provoking theories that alter your perception of the world. He expects a lot, but it?s WORTH IT. I will actually miss the class now that it?s over, which I believe is the mark of a great professor.
Underwood is a highly-effective professor. I highly recommend him. The works assigned to be read and written, as well as his grading method, improved my logic, reasoning, and writing.
Don't take this class if you're weak-willed or lazy. If you want to challenge yourself, do take it as it is one of the most enriching courses I've taken at PCC. The professor is very helpful and genuinely cares about educating his students and helping them grow as better writers and thinkers.
I have taken his class a while back and I still think about what I have learned in the class. The material was mentally rich and full of wonderful ideas. The writing expectation is high, but he is extremely helpful and expresses a great sense of passion for teaching and for his students. Ask for help when you need it, even with the theory.
One of the greatest professor's I've ever met. He not only helped me become a better writer but also helped open up my perspectives of understanding. I really miss the class because it brought on the level of thinking that you wouldn't expect at a community college.
Your writing will improve but expect to work hard on essays. Overall great professor because you learn a lot and have fun learning things about not only the English language but about life. His tattoos are cool and what he says is interesting, so you won't be bored.
Shane will push all his students hard, and it does scare away some lackluster students. For me, however, I think he was THE TEACHER that made me fall in love with school. Thank you.
Underwood is by far one of the best teachers at PCC. His teaching methods are not only informative but also engaging. Do the homework he assigns, pay attention and you will get an "A". Be prepared for him to tear your essays apart but with positive feedback to help you get a good grade. Not the typical eng400 teacher...he sets the bar high!
Professor underwood by far one of the best professors at PCC. He is extremely helpful to his students and his classes are fun and interesting. I enjoyed attending to all his lectures. I will definitely miss this class. Take advantage of his office hours!!!
He is wicked good. This classes are very interesting, and your writing will improve. This is not the class, you take for an easy A. This is the class you take if you care about your writing and want to improve. Underwood is the guy that cares, and get to know you.
Underwood is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. His class was definitely challenging, but I learned a lot from it and I feel that I grew both as a student, and as a person. There is daily homework and the essays are not easy, but this IS college. He is very engaging and honestly cares about his students. I will forever be grateful to him.
A Special lecturer, full 3hours with only 15 minutes break. A crystal clear and deep critical thinking. I hope PCC will keep him to teach 1A, 1B, 1C. A young talented Professor...and a peaceful teacher.
Very interesting Professor. He has a great deal of charisma which makes it relatively easy to pay attention and care about his topics. He is enthusiastic about his subject and has a good sense of humor. His essays aren't that difficult but he is great help in office hours. He also responds quickly to emails. Good class, good professor.
Captain Underwood is amazing! He makes time fly by, but he never makes you want to leave class because he keeps it so interesting. He makes English fun, he is hilarious, and he's very helpful. As long as you are up for a challenge, Underwood is the professor to take! p.s. he loves grilled ham and cheese sandwiches.
This is the most enriching and thought provoking instructor and class I have ever taken, EVER! Underwood is remarkable at explaining difficult ideas, and he always finds a way to relate the philosophical material to the lives of students. There is no doubt that this class is more than an English course; it is also a course in personal development
This man blew my mind, months after taking his class, I'm still reeling. If you're lazy and want an easy A, too bad. Willing to learn? He's willing to teach. If you don't take things personally, you're going to have a blast because he relates everything to the present. Office Hours, GO TO THEM, he goes above and beyond to help us. Best prof, EVER.
I had Shane for 1A and 1B. My interest going into 1A was about a 2. I left and now I'm finishing my minor in English this year. The only reason I have a passion for this subject is because of him. Sure I'm stuck in school an extra semester, but I love it. I wish he was a university professor. If he ever teaches 1C I'll be back for fun.
Good looking guy, love his smile.. Anyways, don't be deceived! He is pretty strict when it comes to grading. Difficult material, just pay attention and ask questions. Gives a lot of work. If essays are not your forte, ALWAYS go to him. Oh, and class is always fun!
This is honestly one of the best, if not the best professor ive ever had. If anyone has negative connotations to say about him, they either dont care about their education, cant take a joke, or theyre little pansies. If u really want to learn something in this life, and truly own that knowledge, take him, otherwise, go somewhere else.
Best Professor I've ever had!He has really changed my views in this world. Besides being intelligent, he is also VERY handsome!I love being in has class and I'm always !willing to learn something new. Don't take him if you're looking for an easy A. His class is tough but he will definitely help
Great class. Easy if you have tact, care, and are interested in broadening your horizons of understanding.
he is perfectly awesome, the best professor I've ever had. From him, I have learned a lot of different perspectives to explore the world I'm living. Plus, he is so handsome and attractive. Plan to take him next semester :)
Shane Underwood is an extremely gifted professor. He makes his class really interesting and exciting. He uses a lot of stories and examples from his journey through life and his successes... He truly inspired me to give meaning and reason what I write. The only downside is that he is not the prof. to take if you want an easy A. He grades harsh.
He is the reason why some people change their majors from science to English or philosophy. HE CHANGED MY WORLD. Best class I have ever taken in my life. I would go back just for the knowledge and not for a grade. Work hard, it is not easy. He looks for improvement, so if you go to his office hours or email him HE WILL HELP YOU. Chillest guy ever.
This guy is a legend! Take him if you can afford some gpa to lose.
He is one of the few excellent teachers U have had. Be prepared to read and discuss rigorously. If you want an easy A go elsewhere.
great teacher
One of the must-take profs at PCC. Very energetic. Might intimidate you a little bit, but as he usually says, just "confront the alien". He raises the bar by asking you to read the books he read at graduate seminars. Super hard readings, but rewarding and facilitated by the prof. I would have taken him for Eng 1A and 1B if I knew him back then.
So attractive, especially when he speaks. Anyways, tough grader. He does expect a lot, so I suggest you visit his office hours so that you'll get a decent grade on your paper. His lectures are ALWAYS interesting. Definitely a lot of reading. Just go to him for the papers and ask questions, you should pass with at least a C.
This was an outstanding course. Underwood brought 2,500 years of literary and cultural theory to life in one semester, and he made sure that all of us appropriated it. Every serious English major should have to take this course; it will make the rest of their Lit courses so much more interesting. However, be ready for a challenge!
He is reeeaaally handsome, and not just for a professor, just a super hot human altogether. The stuff you learn in his classes is life-changing, and worth the academic/intellectual/psychological struggle. You will grow tremendously throughout the course of this class, and find yourself working hard simply because you want to, not just for the grade
Engaging professor. Engaging class. You will leave empty-handed. That's because all of your "knowledge" about the world will be stripped from your consciousness as you realize that things are not really what they seem. He's a guide to a different way of thinking. But careful not to be so consumed by the philosophies. Your beliefs will be challenged
He's very helpful in letting you understand about the real world, however he's doesn't clarify that well how he wants his essays done (even during office hours). Pay attention in class and you'll do well. Also, as a heads up, this might not be recommended for people who are afraid of having their 'world' questioned (ie, religion, values etc.)
This class is not for people looking to slack off with an easy A, he wants his students to do good, discussions at the end of class. But he should realize that not everyone can quickly comprehend what he's trying to explain so trying to explain in more depth would've helped. This is by no competition the best class I've taken. Possibly in my life.
He has changed my life for the better. Underwood makes you own up to your words, so be careful to not put your foot in your mouth because he will correct you. NOT AN EASY GRADER. NOT AN EASY GRADER.
Shane is one of my favorite professor I've had a few semesters back. He is very helpful. Especially toward someone who is slow at trying to write an essay. He's really patience with me as one of his student. I thank him for being a great professor and a friend .
Although the material was completely foreign and I was pretty confused through the first half of the semester (or more), I loved this class and the prof. Underwood inspires you to see beyond the obvious and question the world, its values, and our place in it. Difficult reading w question sets due every class . Not an easy class, but worth it.
He's not a bad teacher, but I wouldn't recommend him. Honestly, it's more of a psychology class than English. He's a tough grader and he'll pick on you if he thinks you're not paying attention. He will call out people on the spot. The books, in my opinion, are really difficult to understand. Don't take this class unless you're ready to work.
Really informative, but a ton of work.
His 1A class really has changed my life for the better. It's only difficult if you're not here to learn and grow as a writer. If you are here for the grade then you seriously need to choose another Professor. If you want to exercise your critical thinking and writing skills then do yourself the biggest favor and take this class. Active
Hes not a bad professor but the books were difficult to understand, he picks on you if he thinks you're not paying attention but doesn't really pick on the slackers even though I showed up all the time. The essay questions were so difficult to even understand it felt like a psychology class but I did enjoy the discussions. Kind of a know it all.
Underwood is not what I expected a pcc professor to be. He is particular and he expects his students to rise to his standards. It is true that he can be a bit in your face, but I believe it is because he wants us to be the best pcc students. He really wants us to exercise informed agency. Engage in every dialogue and grow! Thanks Underwood.
Great class!
Makes you think. His Essays are difficult but if you pay attention in class you should get a decent grade. The assigned readings are also fairly difficult but he will go over it in detail in class. Participation is mandatory and he has Group discussions at the end of every class that are very fun and very interesting. Have to be committed.
Underwood is the best English teacher I've ever had. But this English class was also the hardest I've ever taken! He really makes you think harder than you thought you could. He really pushed me to do my best on every paper i wrote. I barely passed but i don't regret taking this class and i would take his classes again.
Underwood is by far the most genuine professor I've ever worked with. He cares a lot about the material and it is evident in the way he runs his class. The books assigned are tough to get through, but the class discussions and office hours should help.
Probably the most challenging, yet inspiring classes I've ever taken at PCC. I felt so lost each time we went into discussion, but left the room enlightened every single time.
Absolutely the most difficult class I have ever taken. That being said, he makes sure to reassure you that he doesn't EXPECT you to get it and if you did, there would be no point to being there. Always willing to answer questions and clarify, take advantage of office hours and the CTC along with your fellow classmates. NOT AN EASY GRADE!!!!
Underwood is one of the best professors at PCC. If you want to expand your horizon and grow as a writer take his class. The class is not for people who is there just to get a grade. He puts lot of effort for you to get better in writing and expects the same effort back. Fair enough?!!
Best teacher I've had since I came back to school after 16 years. Great teacher, helpful, inspiring, motivates students to be all that one can be. Don't be afraid to make mistakes because others learn. Take advantage of his office hours, he's not going to bite! Lol!
My favorite professor! He's tough as an essay grader, but that's expected for college level English. You're not an expert or you wouldn't be going to school, so know that he will grade harshly but fairly & you will learn. Take this if you want to learn, take someone else for the easy A. It's frustrating but you truly grow in here and it's amazing!
One word, AMAZING. Underwood makes everything so interesting because he is just so passionate about what he does. It will not be an easy class but it is worth it, he gives great feedback and helps you grow not only as a writer but as a person. Out of all the professors I've had he is hands down the best, if you have the opportunity take his class!
DO not get me wrong the material he teaches in his class is tough but is manageable. Underwood taught me so much about the word we live in and how language is a big part of the way we think and communicate with others. In order to get an A you will have to commit a lot of time into your papers. However, he offers lots of help . He is great. :)
Greatest professor ever!!!!! But get ready to work. You must be willing to sacrifice sleep to get through this class, but it is worth it.
I've taken Underwood for English 1A, 1B, and 1C and I can say I've become an exceptional writer. Lazy people hate this professor because they actually need to work. This class is not for people are trying to get an easy A but he will change your views on the world in a way that is interactive and thought-provoking even outside of the classroom.
Professor Underwood is AMAZING! I was never really into English until I had his class. I can honestly say that I'm able to use what he's taught me outside of the classroom. Essays are a CRUCIAL part of your grade but he really makes an effort to help you out on everything you need! I don't recommend this class if you're lazy or just want an easy A.
PCC really lucked out finding a professor as committed and challenging as Professor Underwood. He goes above and beyond with his courses. I never once went to his class feeling under-stimulated. It can be tough, but he's willing to help during office hours. The material is great, and I learned a lot. He talks fast sometimes, so take notes. 10/10.
I took him for spring 2016 and I miss his class to this day. I've never had such an amazing professor in my entire academic career. If you're a baby please don't take this class, but if u actually enjoy learning and becoming a more intelligent person, then do yourself a favor and take his class... (ps more than half the class drops) BEST PROF EVER
Big ego but great professor. You have to read and write about what you've read every day, but the discussions are what really help your grade and prepare you for the big assignments (we only had a midterm exam and 2 large papers). I'd highly recommend him if you're interested in English and Philosophy and aren't afraid to contribute to the class.
Pushes all his students to strive for a better, be it in the way they approach/view existence, other individuals, or their academic argumentation. Extremely demanding courses, but the experience of it all is indescribably amazing; come with a willingness to learn and to be open. Very understanding & caring professor - he only wants you to succeed.
Amazing professor, caring and understanding but be prepared to work hard. Pushes his students to strive not for a letter grade, but to really learn and grow. Extremely difficult class, but the experience is worth it. Take advantage of his office hours and connect with other students--the discussions, feedback, and support are extremely helpful.
He's not your typical English professor--his eccentric style of lecture and discussion leadership encourages not only mandatory participation, but also critical thinking. I'd consider this the first real English class I've ever taken, but don't take his course lightly--you have to work hard for your grade and his respect. It's not an easy A.
A VERY hard class. He is a great professor who will make sure you become a better writer. 3 big essays, mid-term, final :) , and question sets. Also the book(s) you read are very difficult books. His class is bearable and getting an A is SUPER HARD, but you will learn. Take this class if you want to learn, but if you want a A, do not take him.
He's a dedicated professor whose very passionate about teaching. The readings can be difficult but he explains everything and answers everyone's questions. It's not difficult to make an A if you show up to class, take notes, and turn in all your assignments on time.
Amazing professor! Inspires all the students and is really dedicated to his craft, can't wait till he comes back in spring 18. Helps you grow as a writer and as a critic. The theories can be dense but he breaks it down and relates it to modern day. I wish i could take him again before i transfer! His lectures influence the way you see the world.
As to what this class is supposed to be, it's truly a critical thinking class. Each class meeting is a discussion. A class with him make me look at things differently. Sure it's a challenging class, but that's a silly reason not to take his class considering the knowledge and wisdom that you will get.
This class challenged me more than any other experience I've had. Underwood, my peers, and the reading changed my life more in 16 weeks than anything else has. I'd say the experience is worth any grade that you receive. If getting an A really matters that much to you, then expect to be writing at a high level. He is willing to help if you try.
I've taken multiple classes with Underwood, and he is an exceptional professor. He's intimidating and the material is no less intimidating but he will help you if you ask for it, participate in class, do all the question sets, and ask other students for help. I'd say 80% of students in his classes are repeats. Sadly, he won't be back until 2018.
One of the best teachers I have ever taken. His lectures are inspirational, and the in class discussions are even better. Most of the time we sat in a large circle and discussed very complex ideas and theories. This was the hardest and most rewarding class I have ever taken. It is VERY hard to earn an A but possible if you devote yourself.
Professor Underwood is a wonderful professor. I learned so much from him and I think everyone should take him. He comes off as intimidating the first class but if you stick with it, you'll find out he really cares about his students and wants you to succeed. He challenged me in ways no class has every challenged me, and I'm a better writer now.
I learned so much from Professor Underwood, I truly recommend taking this class if you are willing to challenge yourself and expand your knowledge.
Dont get me wrong, Underwood is a great professor! Very inspirational and respected by many students and has great values as a teacher and skills. However, if you care for your GPA, avoid taking this class. However, if you want to learn and grow yourself as a learner, take this. Definitely not an Easy A, be prepared to work for a good grade.
I had to drop this professor while getting very sick, he was extraordinarily kind about it. He's quite intimidating, but unfortunately doesn't receive the respect he deserves.
Discussions on Reading questions. No papers; understanding HW questions is key to exams. Dense readings and topics. ASK for clarifications since he'll run away with the topic. Caring- he'd rather you let him know about trouble with class than disappear without notice.
Underwood is very charismatic and articulate. His lectures on crit literary theories have changed the way I think. He offers extremely thorough feedback on essays and incorporates vocabulary in his daily lectures, both of which have drastically improved my writing. Fun, intellectually stimulating, and unlike any class I've ever taken.
Class is very discussion-based so avoid if you hate talking. If you want to get better at writing, take this class. You have to work for the grade though but he's super chill and gives you a chance to raise your grade. Intimidating but really, he's super caring. You can tell him straight to his face that you're skipping class and he says yes.
Probably the most difficult class I've ever taken, however I DO NOT regret it one bit. I've never enjoyed torturing myself more. Underwood puts up an intimidating image, but truthfully he's a big softie in disguise. Bottom line is hard work will get you there and don't expect an easy A. Abuse office hours!
Not an easy A!!! Underwood is very intimidatingbut I learned so much from him. Difficult class but SO rewarding
I loved this class! There's a lot of work and he can be intense, so be ready. Don't take it personally. We had daily analyses and 2 essays. We had lots of time preparing our essays (outlines, rough drafts) and opportunities to get feedback from our peers. I loved the people in my class and I don't think I would've enjoyed the class w/o them.
Professor Underwood is honestly the best english professor/teacher I have ever had. I took his English 1AH class and it was challenging but achievable. You will spend the whole semester talking about rhetoric. Not a lot of homework, just answering roughly 4 questions based on the book. If you want to be a better writer, please take his class!
Underwood is truly one of a kind. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from him. He believes in his students and will help you to be the best you can be. Invest in him and in return he will go above and beyond to help you succeed as a student and free thinker.
Underwood is a professor that you hear from word of mouth about how hard he is on grading and therefore to not take his class. I strongly disagree with that notion and would like to say that by being in his class, my understanding has immensely grown regarding not only philosophy but on my personal life as well. A definite must for an English class
Underwood is one of the smartest people I've ever encountered. His brain is miles deep full of knowledge and witty comebacks. He responds to questions about grammar, rhetoric, and philosophy without hesitation. I can see how he can rub off on some people the wrong way, but he's one of those professors that you will want to impress.
Underwood is hands down, one of the best professors I've had. His lectures on the critical lit theories will really blow your mind. If you love to have discussions and want to expand critical thinking skills, he's the man. He may seem intimidating, but once you get to know him and listen to his lectures, you'll see he's brilliant and hilarious
The material Underwood teaches is the toughest I've encountered, but he's incredibly effective in communicating complex concepts to his students. He brought out the best of my abilities and those that I didn't even know I had in me. This confidence is something I'll take with me beyond PCC. A transformative experience. don't miss out on PCC's best.
Shane is a really cool guy, he come off kinda tough but if you get past the first day then you will honestly love this class
He's honestly the best professor I've ever had. He's so knowledgeable about English and rhetoric and offers great explanation for complex philosophical ideas. There are two papers and question sets due (almost) every week. PLEASE TAKE HIM IF YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK AND LEARN. You'll gain so much insight about life and start to think differently!
After this class, I realized the importance of choosing professors. I got the first B of my life. The book that I read this semester was quite difficult (all about Philosophy). All of my classmates were complaining about this professor too. I won't recommend any people who want to learn or care about the GPA to choose this professor.
I am so confused why I learning philosophy in an English class. The professor was so mean and the class is boring. He is a pretty chill essay grader.
At first I was intimidated by prof Underwood and the material, but I stuck with it and Im glad I did. He explains things really clearly during zoom conferences. He was super understanding and gave me a lot of feedback on papers. It wasnt an easy class but I truly learned how think more critically. Ask lots of questions. Underwood will clarify.
Professor Underwood is very concerned with his students. I found his assignments to be clearly articulated and his feedback for the most part comprehensive and thoughtful. He was very supportive throughout the semester, whether regarding personal hardships or encouraging his students to engage further with opportunities outside the classroom.
For a community college professor, Dr. Underwood is one of the best you'll find. His course is challenging, but if you step up to the plate, you will improve both as a writer and an academic. His grading is honest, as it is for college-level writing. Abuse his office hoursconversations with him can change your life.
He is a cool professor, and his lectures are very interesting. The class really challenges you and makes you question so many things in life.
Shane is an amazing professor although his class is extremely difficult. I would not take this class if you already have a full roster of classes as his workload may be to much for you to handle. If you are willing to put in an extra load of work Shane is definitely super worth it.
Takes effort to get an A. I don't recommend taking this class if you already have a heavy course load, or if you don't enjoy philosophy. It is a lot to try and grasp, but it is definitely doable. I also recommend going to his lectures--they are optional, but they help a lot. Reading + question sets every week and two 7-page research papers.
As someone who struggles with writing I felt iffy taking his honors class, but his class is worth it. He gives really good feedback and explains his suggestions through voice memos. Some of the essays were harder than others especially since this is class focuses on rhetoric. Overall, I learned a lot from his class and I would recommend it.
Shane Underwood is an amazing professor. I enjoyed his lectures and he is always accessible to students during office hours. He gave me very thorough and useful feedback on my essays. This class is not easy but it was definitely rewarding. I highly recommend him.
Really makes you think. Hard grader, but he is fair.
If you want to get an easy A or don't care about English that much avoid this class at all costs. Every other English teacher is A LOT easier than him. That being said, if you want to challenge yourself and learn a lot about philosophy then I would highly recommend you take his class. He cares about your success but will make you work for it.
This is the most challenging class I have ever taken, but I have learned so much. Underwood is understanding, funny, and caring. This class has made me see the world differently.
He is a really cool guy. He is funny and his classes are great. Expect question sets, quizzes, and essays; but, he is a great teacher and a great person as well. The classwork load is not that bad but you got to present quality assignments. He is an awesome guy, definitely take this class.
I pretty much was lost the entire time in class but that's part of it and it's okay. Although many dislike the fact that the class is Philosophy heavy, this class has changed my life. you can also tell that Professor Underwood REALLY loves what he's teaching and you rarely meet those kinds of professors. It was an honor taking this class.
I took him 3 times, mostly because I like him and think he's funny. He is in fact a tough grader, but see him during his office hours and he'll really help you out. Take him if you want to get better at writing, if you want a funny professor, or if you want something intellectually engaging. Beware the class will be demanding, though.
If you like engaging in thoughtful and reality-bending dialogue with your peers, you'll probably like Underwood's style of teaching. He may be a tad intimidating, but don't be afraid to email him if you have any issues with your work! Put in the effort and an A won't be very hard. +Hard but rewarding class +Snack runs during break +Has a cute dog
dont be afraid from reading reviews about tough grading. its not hard to get an a if you pay attention to what he's asking for and apply his feedback! this is the only english class ive ever taken where i could tell i improved from the beginning of the semester. im also not a great writer at all and got an a! super manageable workload, take him!
To be honest, I never thought I would actually enjoy an English class. Although I definitely had to work harder than my peers in other English classes, this class was definitely my most rewarding and also the one where I learned the most. Take Underwood if you can manage the workload and want an engaging and challenging course.
The course is challenging, but extremely rewarding. You're going to have to think, and you're going to deal with concepts that can feel overwhelming. Advice for anyone considering this course: PARTICIPATE! Do the question sets, show up to every class, speak up, and take advantage of his office hours. Best English professor at PCC hands down.
Make an effort and earning an A won't be a problem. Recommendations: - MEDITATE on prompts before outlining - Receive feedback in office hours on rough draft outlines before writing (completing an entire draft only to receive the feedback that your paper was off topic is beyond frustrating) - Take notes (must be handwritten) - Go to every class
If you're just looking to get by, no judgement, do not take Underwood. If you want to challenge yourself intellectually, question the status quo, and go on a journey of personal development, then there is no better professor. I've studied at PCC, USC, and Pepperdine, and have yet to find a more inspirational professor. You get what you put in!
Underwood's class scratches an itch I never knew I had. He teaches mind-blowing things that seem so obvious in retrospect and has the experience and skills to push you towards scratching this intellectual 'itch.' His classes are life-changing. As Underwood puts it: "The parts can only be as good as the whole," you'll never be the same again.
Loved Professor Underwood! Lots of critical thinking and philosophical ideas. Not an easy A, you really need to put in effort for a good grade and he's a tough grader, but it's worth it if you truly want to learn something. Cares about engagement, effort, & participation. I would highly recommend his class if you really want to engage and learn!
Professor Underwood is thorough in all aspects of his teaching. He welcomes questions and discussions, and he expects respect, attentiveness, and engagement in return. His coursework is challenging, but he offers extensive and valuable feedback so don't worry. If you put in the work and actively engage with the class/material, you'll pass.
While Underwood definitely has strict standards and expectations, he maintains a great sense of humor and charismatic disposition. His work is challenging, but the skills and knowledge you will leave the class with are invaluable. To really engage with and absorb the material, participate, be attentive, and communicate clearly and with tact!
You can tell when a professor likes to do his job, and underwood is one of them.
This is my 2nd time taking his class, and I'm also considering taking another one of his classes next semester. Although he can be eccentric, especially in the first few days of class, he's an extremely understanding and caring teacher. He wants you to succeed, and he's willing to help you every step of the way so long as you put in the effort.
To take a class with Dr. Underwood is to question life itself. After taking all English classes with him, I can confidently say that the best way to pass his class is not to write perfect essays, but to write True essays. This is a class to challenge your beliefs and to question reality. This is certainly a class for the courageous and curios minds
Expect to read a lot. His main focus of the class is around philosophical hermeneutics which is a foreign concept that you will need to acclimate to quickly. He is very fair with his grading and is passionate about his topics. He has very engaging lectures in every class. Your essay-writing abilities will need to be top-notch to get an A.
Professor Underwood's class is anything but easy. I had to work tirelessly for my grade, but the knowledge I received from him was well worth my time. If you're looking to take a class that will challenge you, I 100% recommend him. However, if you're looking for a class to get an easy A, you should consider other professors.
Very Tough assignments and Criteria was really tough also. Lots of reading and papers for the readings. Very tough on critique of papers.
Hard to understand, wasn't very helpful. I only got feedback on the main papers, the mid and the final. I really wanted feedback on weekly question sets. After the semester was over, I consulted with a tutor to better understand where I went wrong. I learned the most after the fact.
Dr. Underwood is a great English Professor!!! I learned much more things, re-think about our surroundings. Take his class if you really want to learn things.
Dr. Underwood is a 10/10! Really got me to think critically.
Before taking this professor I thought I hated English but after taking his class I appreciated English just a little bit more. He's a chill professor and the workload is decent but I had to try really hard on writing the 10 page paper cus my senior year ap lit teacher didnt teach shit about writing research papers or doing research.
Absolutely shatters my perception of my world and blows my mind constantly. He will make you think, and think critically. His lectures are fascinating, the office hours are though provoking. As a professor, he really cares what he does, gives extremely insightful feedback on papers, and doesn't pander.
Probably one of the best professors at PCC. Underwood is endlessly entertaining. Very theory heavy, which was hard to get used to at first, but he explains concepts in a comprehensible way during lectures. He gives a great amount of feedback, so if you want an A on the essays use his critiques! Not an easy A, but a very introspective course.
Professor U. is the ultimate writing instructor, bringing humor, detailed feedback, and so much support. His class is engaging. He genuinely cared for my success in and out of the classroom. The class felt like a family by the end.
I don't think I've ever had an instructor who I've complained about more. That being said, no other instructor was ever able to weasel their way into casual, everyday conversation like Underwood did for me. There's no other class for which I can whole-heartedly say I've learned as much as I did with him. The content is applicable to real life, just
I would loudly complain and rant to my friends about Professor Underwood. I had nightmares about him and his assignments. - Underwood will give you two pages of back-to-back feedback about your paper if you don't know how to write at the level he expects. - The writing center is your best friend. - So what?
I LOVED THIS CLASS AND THE PROFESSOR!!!
He is truly exceptional. His teaching style encourages us to delve into philosophical concepts and challenges us to think independently. This course has not only improved my academic writing skills, but also fostered my ability to critically ponder life's questions. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of reality.
Underwood is an exceptional professor who exceeded my expectations. I found his lectures to be engaging and his dedication to being accessible to students impressive. Additionally, I appreciated the detailed and valuable feedback he provided on my essays. While challenging, the knowledge and growth I gained from it made it all worth it.
Professor Underwood's class is challenging, but he genuinely cares about helping students succeed. The workload is heavy, but the knowledge gained is invaluable. I found unstuck ai and the free textbook to be extremely helpful study tools.
Taking Underwood is like a 16-week degradation ceremony but in the best way possible. His feedback is unlike anything I've ever read; it pushes you to do your best. Don't underestimate the essays. He makes himself seem scary, but he's just a passionate guy. You will have to grind for that A. The sample papers are a blessing. Grueling but worth it.
Undie is the goat.Underwood's interactive classes provides some very influential and fun lectures. He really changed the way I think(maybe for the worse) about basically everything in life.Despite his papers asking clear questions, it is one of the most challenging papers to write, unfortunately I am a lazy bum, and I wish I had put in more effort.
Very basic class and even more mid professor.
Disappointing is all I have to say.
This class was incredibly valuable! I learned so much, and the skills I gained in critical thinking and writing paid off tremendously after transferring. Underwood was supportive and challenged me to think deeply about literature and life in general, which helped me develop as a student ‘person'. I highly recommend him!
This class was next level. We dove deep into hermeneutics and rhetorical theory, which sharpened my ability to form strong written arguments. U challenged me to break ideas down in meaningful ways. My writing and analysis skills improved so much throughout the course.
This class was tough but worth it if you actually tried. The prof was super smart and made the topics interesting. One classmate complained nonstop and was such a loser—didn't even try. If you care about learning and want to improve, this class will push you in a good way.
Underwood's class is fun and he's crazy smart, but don't play yourself—he's strict. I used AI on the final paper thinking he wouldn't notice… he did. Regret it big time, especially since he gives so much feedback to help you improve. If you take his class, be ready to work hard and actually learn.
At first I personally thought it was a difficult class and almost dropped it. However I'm thankful I didn't, this professor VERY helpful for improving my papers, presentations, etc. If ur willing to keep a open mind and learn values beyond just getting a grade to pass a class(i picked and chose what values I wanted) I encourage u to take this class
Truly one of my favorite professors ever. Do not take this class if you want an easy A. Take it if you like funny lectures. Underwood will make you work, sweat, and (maybe) cry, but he will also make you a better writer and a better person. Be open-minded, try your best, go to his office hours, ask questions, and you will get the grade you deserve.
Hilarious and engaging lecturer. Takes rhetorical concepts and puts them into digestible, everyday examples. DO THE READING, ask questions, go to office hours, show that you care and do your best. Underwood is honest, fair, and cares about his students, but he will make you work for your grade.
Dr. Underwood is remarkable. The kind of professor and man Dr. Underwood is can be captured by one of his frequent quotes: “Understanding does not mean adherence.” His classes challenge your thinking in the best way and you will grow intellectually and personally—take his class, you won't regret it.
Life changing class. Receiving your first ever critique on your paper WILL be jarring and VERY humbling, but he wants to see you succeed and help you develop your critical thinking and writing skills. There is so much more to say about Dr. Underwood that a 350 character will simply not suffice.
The class was a disappointment. I learned more by watching videos on YouTube and talking to people outside a classroom setting. I supposed the professor tried but honestly he might to learn to use a more holistic approach.
A remarkable course!
Only a sad baby learns more from watching YouTube videos than taking a class with Dr. Underwood. Poor sad baby.
