horribly hard. class is interesting, but she just tells stories about her family, and then has very hard tests with things never covered in class... and a 25 page paper.
Awful awful awful, dropped class after 3 classes. She was extremely mean, but i have no idea if she teaches well.
I dropped this course after two classes. I am the same age as Prof. Harris (44) and I found her to be rude, insulting and condescending...and not just to me! She could be funny at times, but she flip-flopped from fun to furious, out of nowhere. Scary.
This woman is insane, literally. She's NEVER on time to class (and when i say late, i mean 15-25 minutes, even on exam day. Her tests are impossible (I got the highest grade, with a 33) and she does not cover the material AT ALL. i suggest this class, but don't take it with her. Shes also very rude
One must understand that Harris teaches at a graduate level.She is one of the smartest and most intriguing teachers I have ever met. A lot of students forget that college is about studying and reading material, contrary to popular belief. Yes this course was a difficult, but not unfair. Recommended!

Prof. Harris was so absolutely horrific that I ended up changing my major after taking this class. She did not respect my time and money by showing up late to the majority of classes. I ended up dropping this class late after taking an exam where the highest grade was 33 out of 101.
After taking the class I hated Psychology. Worked my ass off and pulled off a B-. Never ever take her.
i agree with every one of those comments except for the one with the smiley face. she can't admit she's wrong (when the WHOLE class gets below 33 out of 100 on a test, clearly the scan-tron was messed up), told us she was going to drop that grade and actually didn't, makes everyone feel like crap
I have heard nothing but horror stories from everyone who has ever taken her and these are students who are very hard workers. To the comment with the smiley face, I understand that she may teach at the graduate level, but it is PSY 254.200 LEVEL!still no justification for her disrespect to students
come test time you better know the 5 chapters she didn't cover from front to back (too busy talking about her personal life). Went to see her about a grade and she decided to get confrontational and made me cry. I'm pretty sure graduate teachers don't disrespect their students and waste their time.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER! shanette is the worst professor i have ever had. she is rude,talks**** about students behind their backs,is unprofessional and hard to approach. i tried several times to catch her in her office during her office hours and she was never there. i only went to class to take exams bc other lectures were pointless.

Shanette Harris, should not be allowed to teach at all, she is very ignorant, and she loves to embarass and degrade her students in front of the entire class. I received a B in her class, so I am not saying this because of a grade. She is just very unprofessional and does not belong on any college campus
I also found professor harris to be hypocritical and borderline ****. She takes an approach with students that is inappropriate and definitely does not grade fair. I am African American and recieved an A when I can tell you in all honesty i did not deserve one. I recieved the highest grade on the term paper in the class but only finished half of the paper whereas others finished all and did it well....
She's evil. She'll embarass you no matter what. And quite frankly, I don't care about her ex-husband, but that's all I ever learned in Abnormal Psych....except for the fact that she could be diagnosed as psychotic...and to think she's a psychologist!

I did not realize that this website picked and choosed what students posted, however, my post was erased. As I said before, Shanette is brilliant and a great professor. She teaches at a college graduate level, you must be prepared. But I can honestly say that this professor has changed my life and views on social issues. Take her class!!!
She is the worst teacher ive ever had. She teaches one thing in class and then tests us on something completely different b/c she doesnt even make her own tests. She uses a disk that the author of the book made. She randomly picks questions and then doesnt even read them before handing them out. And she's ALWAYS late but yells at us if were late.
This class was the biggest mistake of my life. It has been the biggest waste of time. She teaches at at grad level but, when she doesn't cover material that's on tests, that's when it gets frustrating. Her class is difficult but full of information. It has changed many of my social views. You must be willing to approach social issues of race with an open mind. Her work load is pretty intense, but I will definately walk away from this class with a much different outlook than before.
Professor Harris is the worst professor I have encountered at the University of Rhode Island. She is extremely demanding and unclear as to what exactly she wants. She has an extroardinarily selective memory. Unless she likes you and has had you before she will not remember your name. Her exams do not reflect what you have "learned" in the class.

she took every chance she had to embarass her students and crammed all of our work into the last week of the semester. she will be rude and uncaring towards you and expect you to still respect her. her exams are not made by her and if u ask about an exam question she will say, i didnt make the questions and leave it at that.

I took her abnormal psy class over the summer sessions and I didnt come back after the first class. She told me and two other students that we shouldnt be in college, that we never should have made it here, and every grade I received in high school was a gift. Shes a horrible woman
Prof. Harris was so unprofessional that I complained about her to the dean. She regularly humilliated her students and offered extra credit work to minorities, depending on what personal project she was working on at the time. She did not, at these times, offer extra credit to any other students not fitting her racial profile.
this teacher is horrible. she does not teach at all and only talks about her personal problems and her family. shows up late to class and then expects everyone to listen to her and give her your respect when she doesn't give you hers. exams are ridiculous. she talks during exams and no one can concentrate. humiliates people and hurts there feelings
Class is a joke. Do not take 254 with Harris, you will die. Lady humilates people and fails to understand OTHER PEOPLE'S FEELINGS. Expects respect but fails to return respect. Here's a story from abnormal psych: She is late 45 min to our 1st one hour exam, when class complains, she condescends to having other people take it in the next class. That next test was so impossible that the average score was 23% out of 100%. When people complained to the dean, she failed them and punished the rest of the class. Awful experience
do not take her!!!!! she is a horrible professor. She does not help students learn the information. She just reads the book to you and tells you to retain it. Oh yea she will also call you stupid. she will be late to class but expect you not to be. she will tell you to do all assignments in the last week of class and expect you to get it all done.
she is hard and not easy to talk to. She expects so much from her students but does not provide any motivation for them. Instead she speaks about how our generation has gone to hell and that we are all doomed.

You don't need to go to class because she has all of the outlines in her office but read the book. Hardest grader I have ever had. Go to her office hours and suck up. You'll learn how to write & how not to write as well.
Professor Harris frequently berates students for being 3-5 minutes late. However she has shown up 20+ minutes late ON EXAM DAYS. Her instructions for projects that constitute a signficant percentage of the grade are unclear and insufficient. She wastes large amounts of class time on irrelevant personal anecdotes. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS.
Ridiculous. During class she reads the book to you, and expects you to retain it all. Thoughout "lectures", will randomly throw in anecdotes that have nothing to do with the material. Will humiliate without remorse. Never mention crucial information about papers. Comes late and talks during exams. Could have been a great class, avoid at all cost.
Worst teacher I have had in any level of schooling. Does not obide by URIs policies and is rude beyond comprehension. I did learn a****load in this class but even if you are an unbelieveable student an A is impossible. Not worth it and avoid at all cost. Awful teacher...will not help you out in any way. Makes you feel like an idiot if you're late, while she shows up 10-15 minutes late every class. She was 40 minutes late to one exam and failed to show up for another. Avoid this teacher at all costs.
Knew what she was talking about, but her teaching ability was terrible. She read directly off of oulines and would go off on another topic about her niece, nephew, and her family. I'll give her that she's intelligent, but teaching is something she should have NEVER gone in to. I wouldn't recommend her as a teacher.
Two days before first major test we have about 8 papers due, she talks and talks but just about what she wants to, not about our texts, and then comes out with ... "no one in my last class earned an A" ... WHAT ... if I am going to do all of this work I want to at least hope for an A
I never get C's in classes, and I received one in hers. Big mistake taking her class and I would never even consider taking a class she taught again. I have seen her laughing and talking to kids after her class is over so it may be possible to get on her good side and brown nose but I don't know this for a fact.

She is absolutely crazy. She assigned a 5 page paper, i wrote 8 pages and they were well written pages and I got a 59. The highest grade she gave was a 72. Her exams have some questins that arent even answered in the book and she doesn't care that they're not in the book if more than half the class got it correct. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER!
I don't even know where to begin. I just finished psy254 with her and she is literally insane and every bad thing previous comments said(and much, MUCH more). She is just rediculous and rude, and constantly fails to give out important information reguarding exams and papers. If your thinking of taking this class PLZ talk to some1 who took it w/her.
The class was a nightmare. Rude, inappropriate, condescending, and absolutely crazy. Not once, have I ever had an instructor so mean and crude. Spare yourself the trouble and avoid her classes at all costs.

This class is funny but extremely difficult. We read the entire text book cover to cover in this class, although she didn't come close to going over these chapters in class. I took Abnormal Psych with her. While she is tough, sometimes students with entitlement complexes need that. I earned an A in the class and it was not easy. She challenged all students.
Dr. Harris is a hypocrite. She is offended by tardiness yet often arrives late. Vents about her past even though her syllabus advises against it and teaches a discipline that promotes relativism but in a homogenized manner. There is no reason to drag down your GPA. If you need Ab Psych take it at CCRI with David Alfano and actually enjoy the class.

Yes it was a hard class and she was outspoken and opinionated, but i think everyone is being to sensitive. She taught the materal, it was all relevant and practical. She did her job, not the best, but you can get a lot out of her class if you get over all her craziness
Avoid this class at all costs. The material is interesting, but she makes the class almost impossible to succeed in. Extremely strict with the syllabus, but does not follow her own advice; mandates being on time, but is NEVER on time herself; embarrasses students and insults them directly; completely unacceptable classroom conduct. CRAZY.
Very hypocritical; NEVER EVER on time, but if you're late you can expect to be insulted in front of the entire class. Very elevated ego, thinks she's the best professor on earth, but it is entirely up to the students to learn the material themselves. If you have questions, don't bother. If you value your time and your GPA do not waste it with this lady. She will enter class late, per usual, and pontificate how she is the probably one of the best teachers known to the academic world. Dr. Harris is an influential women that lives and teaches by her own definition. Very scholarly, extraordinarily strict, and above all down to earth. Don't disrespect and do your work and there is no reason you should not get an A. Stay ahead of her in the text and be mindful that she is preparing you and pushing you to exceed your own expectations

She is definitely a hard grader with her papers. Her exams can be difficult but they are taken from the text book. there is a helpful website that has practice quizzes on each chapter. although she is difficult, she is hilarious, real, nice, intelligent, and awesome.

Does not stick with her planned schedule for the syllabus, with four weeks left of school we had our FIRST test, then two weeks left to go we had our SECOND exam, leaving us with 4 exams left to take, we were not able to take the remaining exams, so our grades suffered.
If you enjoy being berated instead of taught, this is a great class for you. You might as well teach yourself. I know more about her life than any concept in Psychology from taking her class. She is rude and belittling on a daily basis. Yes, she can be fun at times, but overall she is not looking out for anyone's best interest.

I worked so hard in this class because I knew she was serious and nothing I did paid off. She is the absolute worst professor I have ever had at URI. This teacher is most likely the worst professor I have ever had. Her lectures are pointless and has nothing to do with the topic of the course, yet she assigns multiple papers each week based on readings we have to do. Im almost positive she has no clue what subject she is teaching, yet she is still employed? Don't get it.

Dr. Harris is not only a terrible professor, but a terrible person. She will only listencater to black students. Furthermore, she loves insulting people and putting them on the spot, often resulting in students crying which doesn't phase her. Also, no matter how hard you work, you won't get better than a C. Don't take her!
Her exam questions were all based off material in the book. She gives powerpoint lectures but they are completely useless because she never gets past slide 10. Her lectures were also off-track from the exam material (study only according to the syllabus schedule). Her papers are very difficult if you've never done APA or used articles before.
Read the chapters entirely and take detailed notes as you go it helped me. Read before each class and if you have time study so when she asks a random question you can get bonus points. Gives many opportunities for bonus points and believe me you'll need them. The tests are specific with percents and other random specifics. Read her notes too!!
This will be the most challenging course you will take in psych; expect a C+ or lower. She is very eccentric, which is enjoyable but kinda over the line, and she doesn't teach you the material. She is very clear with expectations and work. If you cannot teach yourself or plan to read the chapter more then once then dont enroll. Little hw, 2 projs
Brilliant woman who isn't there to give out grades. She'll make you work for it but you'll learn a lot in the process. To be honest, she's tough, however she is very easy to understand and is very clear with all directions and assignment dates. In this class, sit down, shut up, listen, laugh at jokes, but pay attention!!!!
Terrible, unforgiving professor. Unclear on expectations and deadlines, but NEVER accepts late assignments. Not there to teach students, only to prove she knows everything
Very challenging class. Expect to read each chapter fully or else you will not pass. I recommend taking this class with a different professor if the topic is interesting to you. She does not teach and expects you to learn it on your own. A lot of outside work is required to get at least a C in the class.

She is extremely old fashioned in her mindset of psychology and how she grades opinionated work. Makes writing assignments for her extremely difficult because of this, so take the course at your own risk.

We were 3 weeks behind on the schedule so towards the end of the semester we had a test every other class. Save yourself while you can
Here's the deal straight up This class is easy. I was a C student all through URI undergrad and this was the first A I ever got. It's OD straightforward and The test bank is available online for purchase(identical to exams). Don't mess it up for the rest of us

She takes forever to respond to emails and makes her syllabus very unclear. I recently asked her what the dates of our up coming test would be since it should have been 3 weeks ago accoriding to the syllabus, and she responded with "you'll find out when everyone else does."
Worst professor I have ever had. She makes it next to impossible to get good grades and doesn't care about helping you learn the material. Doesn't explain anything and expects you to memorize the textbook word for word. I promise you will regret taking her class.
Can be crass and gives off a tough persona but is actually a nice woman. Get to know her after lecture or in office hours and you won't have a problem. She's a Howard grad and a bright woman, I think people get a bad impression because she expects the best effort from her students. If you're lazy or dont care you'll have a problem
On our final exam day she used more than half the allotted time to allow presenters in the class. Not a big deal except they were members of the class scheduled to present weeks before. She had used up their class time on frivolous, irrelevant topics. Unless you only need credits, avoid at all cost.

Disorganized, often didn't grade work/ let you know what your grade was at any point during the course (not even online), rude, not accessible outside of class, once sang "Amazing Grace" for a full 5 minutes, made a girl in class cry, prefers to talk about her opinions rather than course material. Dr. Harris is a an amazing professor. Her lectures fly by as what she has to say about each topic is extremely interesting. She tends to go on rants, however they are usually related to the topic at hand. There is not much homework, but there are hours upon hours of reading and studying to do. Only take this class with her if you're a psych major.

I have had her for just a month now and have had a horrible experience with her. Two days before classes my course was changed to an online course. I emailed her with questions and got nothing but rude comments back. She gave me a zero for a paper because it was in PDF form. Nothing was said in the syllabus about that of course.

I took this as an online course and would NOT take this professor again. The way she grades things is unclear and does not follow the syllabus. If you try emailing her she takes days to answer not to mention first few weeks of class she did not grade anything. Online exams are 85 questions and only gives you an hour and a half. AVOID TAKING HER

Not good at responding to emails, organizing the Sakai site, or grading things in a timely manner. A lot of assignments are opinion-based and really personal so I felt uncomfortable opening up to her on those assignments. So much to complete and keep track of each week. Buy the THREE required textbooks because u read and notate from them each week!
She is rude, unhelpful, degrading, and unclear with all directions. The course is online, students are expected to have questions and want to email the professor. Don't bother. She will take days to respond, leaving you to turn in work by the due date that you are not confident about, and when she does respond, she blames student for confusion.
She does not grade things in a timely manner and the course is all over the place. The amount of reading that is required is crazy and unrealistic, especially if you are working and have other classes. The tests are insanely hard and the questions just do not make sense! Do not take PSY399 with Dr. Harris. The class structure is very unclear and many assignments have contradicting directions, and the exams are extremely tricky and hard. She answers emails, but in a very rude and condescending manner. The workload is heavy and you need to buy the 3 textbooks in order to do all of the assignments. Would not recommend
Exams occur almost every 2 weeks. Lot of work due each week. Grades aren't posted all semester until the last week. Would not recommend this professor.
This class is the reason i'm behind on graduation. She gave us 3 textbooks to read from several chapters from each per night. failed the 1st and 2nd exam, emailed her/ asked for tips on how to better prepare myself, her response was "i dont know how u dont know how to study, but i cant meet to talk with you either i don't hold office hours"
Ended up dropping this class because she's all over the place. She's taken random points off assignments and the only explanations she puts in all caps with little to no constructive/helpful like "THIS IS INCORRECT. YOUR RESPONSE HAS PROBLEMS."
Her Sakai site is insanely disorganized and it is impossible to find the directions for anything. I once emailed her about a project and the only response I received said "Is there a reason you are not writing to me as requested via MESSAGES in sakai?". Another time, I missed an exam due to personal reasons and she had no remorse. Overall, terrible
PLEASE, do not take this class, or any, with this professor. I have never written a review on here of a professor but people really should know about her. If you struggle in this class for any reason, it will be "your fault". I was truly blown away by how unbelievably rude and insulting this prof. was with her feedback on assignments. Don't do it.

This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. Harris does not care about her students and will do anything to make sure they fail. Will turn assignments back with failing grades and no feedback. She will belittle you if you try to talk to you. Every problem you face will be her fault but she will blame you. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER
I have never had so much trouble with a professor. I have never seen or heard anything good about this her. When I spoke to the dean about her, the dean told me that it was not worth fighting. Personally, the way that she handled this class was very confusing. I took this class admits the COVID19 pandemic, and she made the class way more confusing then it needed to be. Exams were harsh and tough, with so many spelling errors sometimes you cannot even comprehend the question! Definitely avoid if you can
She screws up her own assignments and yells at you if you point out her mistakes, and will straight up call you stupid if she messed something up. The most disrespectful, rude teacher I have ever had in my life. She also added double the amount of work during Thanksgiving break. Do not take this class if there are absolutely any other options.
The only class I have failed so far. Semester isnt over but I know Im not doing well. 5 (+/-) assignments a week & tough grader. I do all my work but I havent been doing well, gonna have to take this again. If you take a class w her make sure you include EVERYTHING shes looking for in that assignment or you will not even be considered for an A
This is by far the WORST professor I have ever had at URI!!! Does not give grades back in a timely manner and is not willing to discuss grades with you either. The exam's ask super specific information and are extremely long. I genuinely don't know how this professor Is still working here. Save yourself the aggravation and skip this prof!!!!!
I only passed because the textbook was super accessible and current; communications with her were worse than gibberish, she does not care about accommodations (disability or just a regular, human request from somebody struggling). Assignments themselves were actually pretty manageable but she never gives feedback, good or bad. Take a diff class.>:(
I am only two months into the semester yet have discovered her complete lack of human decency. Does not care if you are sick, have a disability, are struggling. The amount of sheer busywork assigned is dreadful. Exams are long. Disrespectful towards students. I have not learned anything despite the hours and hours I spend completing her assignments
Worst professor I have ever encountered, seriously. She contradicts herself always and gets mad at students when they email her asking questions. She gives 5 assignments a week MINIMUM and they are busywork that no college student has time for. Over Thanksgiving break, she gave us an essay and an exam to complete. NEVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HER!
One of the worst professors I have ever had. For a 100 level class, I spent about 8 hours a week doing her assignments, which all felt like busy work. She was a tough grader, and was rude with her feedback. She required you to write about your "sexual preferences" & mental health to share w/ her and the class which was so uncomfortable. Do not take

Professor Harris has been the absolute worst professor I have had in my college career. Her tests and assignments require such specificity that you would need to be actively reading the book while taking tests and even then, hope and pray you are correct. She gives no leeway in terms of deadlines even if a freak accident occurs. By far the worst.

Only first week of classes and already had horrible interactions. Nothing is clear and does not explain directions. Extremely passive aggressive over emails. Does not like to answer any questions and does not want to be bothered. Do not recommend taking this course!
By far the worst professor I have ever had in my entire college career. I'm a student athlete, so I'm REALLY BUSY, and I regret taking this online class. She's doesn't make time to answer emails and talks to you as if you have no idea what you're doing. The work is HARD. I'm a good student, but I've never had to work so hard for an A in my life.
I haven't had her for more than a month, but I dread her course. I am not a fan of her and the way she teaches. This is an online course, but she doesn't make herself accessible with Zoom/emailing. There are SO many typos in the two tests I already had to take with her. I have heard nothing but bad things about her. Not a nice human whatsoever.
This class is probably the hardest class I've taken. The exams are really hard and the assignments are long and tedious. I do not feel like I have learned anything psychology related. If you need to take this class try to find another professor to take it with. I do not recommend this professor at all.
She is never accessible, doesn't know what class each student is in and does not pay attention to her emails. I had to follow up five times to receive an email back that didn't answer my question. She makes errors on assignments, due dates, and is a tough grader. Would never take again.
Professor Harris has got the be the worst teacher I've had since before highschool. The syllabus for this class was long and confusing, and consisted of different due dates for assignments than in the brightspace. When emailing for help (which is discouraged in the syllabus) you have to send at least 3 to get a rude and unintelligible response.

She doesn't want anyone to email her to ask questions and gives no extra time for hw no matter the excuse. All work she assigns is due at the end of the week, which would seem nice, but she can have up to five things due, which is exhausting and ruins all motivation. This is unrealistic when enrolled in other courses with a heavy workload as well.

oksy major tea cuz everyone is saying she was so hard but literally one of the easiest classes ever. ever single answwer was easy to find and her work was not hard. yes he is kinda a hard grader but u just have to do good on exams and ur fine. taking another one of her classes next sem.

Dr. Harris was a decent professor. To be honest, I almost un-enrolled based on her reviews here but I'm glad I stayed. She is a tough and unforgiving grader, but you should be fine as long as you put the time and effort in. She does assign a lot of busy work, however, and the quizzes/exams have an excessive amount of questions to put it mildly.
I am never one to leave bad reviews but I have to be honest. I thought bad grades were a reflection of me, however, I was WRONG. She is the worst grader and lacks 0 sympathy for any of her students. I went above and beyond in this class and still did not do as well as I deserved to. Save yourself 10 years of your life by NOT TAKING A CLASS WITH HER
The class itself was not terrible, but she was harsh about grading and she was very unresponsive to emails. Even when I followed the rubric perfectly and spent a lot of time on an assignment she would find something wrong. I would consistently get poor grades I did not deserve, like a 50 on discussion posts where I followed every rule.
She is the most unforgiving grader I have ever had at this school, no matter how hard you try its not enough. Save yourself time and do not take this course. The tests take forever because they are 100 multiple choice questions that do nothing for you.

This was a completely online course, had 5 tests all 100 questions with literal typos within them. Work was not awful to do but made it impossible to get good grades by the how harshly she grades. Does not answer emails and does not care if you do good or not. Very rude person do not take any course with her.
Professor Harris can be harsh on grading, but using resources like Unstuck study for study prep helped me manage the heavy workload. Attend class and stay organized to get the most out of this challenging but rewarding course.
