Great course, Greater teacher. Easy to talk to, Easy to listen to, and good notes :)
Excellent Prof. Very easy to talk to and makes learning fun.
Great class, everyone should take it. Shaniff is an excellent lecturer. The coursepack is really helpful too.
Fun class, good prof. easy to talk to, very appraochalbe outside the class.
Possibly the best professor and best class that I have had in almost 6 years of university. The nicest guy ever.
He is a good prof overall. The class itself could be seen as really great or not so great. Seems more like a workshop/seminar session I would attend on the weekend.Very different from any other U class I've taken. For example, one time we had to get together with a partner and disclose our issues.
awesome powerpoint. it is actually nice to look at. course is fun. and useful in real life
Awesome class! Shaniff is a great prof. Clear, and professional about the sexual content. Makes a class about sex very comfortable to listen to.
Nice prof. Should spend more time focusing on what students are interested in and not what he is interested in (ie disability). Tests had picky details. Overall fun class, but too much material to cover (esp. for cummulative final!)
great class and great instructor. Information was easy to follow and fun.
He is a great prof! Made me want to go to class. Very interesting and enjoyable info! Fun classes. His tests are a bit hard so make sure to study for them.
Great course. The professional approach to talking about all things sexual was interesting, informative, and made a possibly uncomfortable subject seem about as normal as any other lecture. The focus was on facts and giving researched information, not assumptions. Shaniff was friendly and respectful. He highlighted extremes with his own research.
great class. When he says u don't need to know material from text book, you do. About 25-35% of mc test questions from there, and very specific.
Awesome class. The exams were a bit tough. We had tons of guest speakers and even watched****.
not only is one of the hottest profs on campus, but he's terrific in making you feel comfortable talking about whatever the issue may be. He made every class so intense and he's just so ridiculously knowledgable that this IS the class worth taking while in your undergrad career. If nothing else, take the class just to look at him -he's gorgeous!
I'd heard bad things, but Shaniff is a thourough and creative instructor. I left his class knowing more about sex than I ever wanted to know, and it was great!
Shaniff is awesome. His tests are very fair if u go to class and study. He is clear about what you will be tested on. He makes class so interesting, I actually liked going. He has a lot of great guest speakers! Get him for this class. He has a way of making sex something that is not uncomfortable!
Read text and memorize stats from manual. Class is hard to get to @ 8AM but worth it. Good prof, cares about students and all profs should model their midterm system on his. He will let you defer midterms if you need to, no questions asked.
Really enjoyed the class. I took the class in the Spring, which had a really nice lay out. The M/C exams were a little harder than I expected but were not that hard. Shaniff has a easyness and approachability about him that makes him a perfect teacher for this course. Really liked his style and he was clear about what he wanted and expected.
This Class Rocks My World.
This was an awesome. He presented the material in a very interesting manner. The guest speakers were really interested and added a lot to the class. Overall the exams were fairly easy, however I found the final a little harder than the midterms.
I took it over summer, so it was accelerated, but he still organized the course in such a way that I didn't feel absolutely helpless, even though I still had to read a chapter a night. He answers most questions even before they are asked, if not he is so kind, it's easy to ask Q's. His exams (M/C) are HARD and super long!... but fair. No papers.
fun class!
The content was good but the prof made the exams too tough. Going into the exam you think you know your stuff but after the exam you are left feeling brutal.
AWESOME prof! Knows his stuff very interesting! Exams are really hard and very specific! (You can tell he teaches grad courses normally) Other than that definitely recommend this instructor!
Shaniff is incredible. As a professor, he would go to the ends of the earth for his students, loves the area he teaches and the course is enriched by his academic activities which are extensive and diverse. Personally, he has a fantastic sense of humour (I mean how could you teach about sex without it!) and is not so shabby to look at!Great course!

Amazing prof! Shaniff makes the topic so enjoyable and fun to participate in! He makes you want to go home and try out everything you discussed in class! I absolutely loved the class...the guest speakers were a bit dry but informative! He is an amazing prof and his midterms are easy but final is not at all! I never used the textbook once!
Awesome class, awesome prof! Lots of guest lecturers to keep things interesting & videos are relevant to what he's teaching yet still entertaining. He brings humour to a subject that can be, at times, awkward
My fav course in my first 2 yrs of General Science! He does a great job making the class fun and comfortable. Very interactive, lots of videos, and you can buy the notes package at the bookstore for less than $10 (no printing!). You DO need to read the text for exams (they are tricky) but it is not hard to get an A! I'd recommend this to anyone!
AMAZING CLASS!!! so much fun and shaniff is an amazing teacher
I came to this class despite not registering. That's how much I enjoyed HECOL 211 and Dr. Esmail's way of teaching. Totally awesome. :)
Shaniff Esmail is a hilarious and very entertaining teacher. Human sexuality can be awkward at times and he made everything seem very comfortable. He was wonderful. Very easy class and lots of fun. :)
Interesting class!! He is a great prof, and provides variety in his lectures. Tests are not hard if you study your notes AND the textbook!
FANTASTIC CLASS!! so interesting and the teacher is very clear and entertaining. GPA booster for sure!
Great Class, very interesting although the exams were extremely hard especially the final, most of the information came from the text which was frustrating because he stressed the notes and brushed off the text.
Awesome Prof, one of the best I have had in my University career. He is absolutely hilarious, extremely knowledgeable and really makes the subject of Human Sexuality comfortable. Tests were easy, concentrate on the manual and brush over the readings :)
Very fair instructor and knowledgeable. Will scale exams and final grades up only (usually by about two grade points)! About one fifth of the exam questions can be super tricky and very specific! B+ is doable with minimal studying; anything higher is very difficult to get.
Easily one of the best prof's I've had in University. He is extremely well versed on the subject. If you want to receive an A you have to know the textbook and readings.
interesting lectures, very informative. have to keep up and know the readings well.
Shaniff Esmail is hilarious! Best prof I have ever had. He made the three hour evening class fly by with his humour and he always had videos or some kind of animation to show us every day. His tests were multiple choice and if you attend the class or read the book they are very easy!
I would recommend this class for any student wanting a break from dry predictable university lectures. You're guaranteed to learn something and enjoy Shaniff's teaching style/sense of humor! You can only sign up if you are in your first and second year- don't miss out! It was the highlight of my second year.
sometimes lectures boring in that he just read from the manual and repeated stories. mostly interesting though.
The class seems awesome at first but then as it progresses his lectures get pretty boring. He needs to spice things up! Brian Parker's guest lecture was a good example of how to spice things up! I could have listened to him lecture for days! Shaniff's exams are pretty tough but not ridiculous.
I would not recommend this class if you think it will be a GPA booster. It provides understanding much of the content and his exams are extremely difficult. If you miss any classes than chances are you will miss out on much of the important information. I do NOT recommend this class unless you are going into anything health related.
Best course of my undergrad so far. Amazing professor. Definitely need to be interested in material to do well, and prepare to do a lot of memorizing.. But I always enjoyed studying for this course! After exams, he takes off all the questions the class did poorly on, so marks go up by up to 10%! Wish all profs were like him.
Great prof, great class! If you read the manual and take thorough notes by coming to class, it's easy to get an A+. Shaniff is engaging, funny, knowledgeable and professional. He says you need to read the textbook to do well but you don't if you come to class. MC exams are straightforward and he boosts marks significantly! Highly recommend.
One of the worst classes. Exams are super hard and most of the exam is not from his notes. Grading system is horrible
Fun informational class, great prof and guest speakers.I always skip when there's a guest speaker but this time they all left me wanting more. His tests are long and tough. You do need to study EVERYTHING notes, textbook, lectures. He says he focuses on the lectures but a lot of exam questions came from the text. It's def not a gpa booster class
I enjoyed him as a prof. Great class to take if you want to break up the standard boring classes. I just took his final and I found it fairly tough and I had 90% of his power points memorized. He is too specific so read the textbook. The class avg was very low both times so he ended up having to add everyone extra marks.I do recommend the class
very interesting lectures, and he really cares about his students. tests are based on text and his lectures but lectures are most important. really cute too :)
If you're in engineering I highly recommend this course. It is like a stress reliever. But be prepared for lots of reading in order to prepare for exams. Be sure not to miss any classes since you'll regret it, its honestly the best course offered. Prof is really chill and is willing to help. Awesome guy. 1010 would take again.
Do not take this class expecting to get an easy A. You need to go to class, write notes, read the textbook, and apply yourself. Having said that, if you put in the effort and if you're interested in the topic it's an amazing and extremely interesting class. Learned so much and wish I could take it again. He's hilarious and an excellent prof.
Tests consist of 100 multiple choice questions. You need the textbook in order to get anything above mediocre grades. 200 person class so it is hard to get personal. Interesting classes, genuinely cares about his sex related topics. He reads 100% exactly what is on his slides, so class attendance is not crucial.
Super simple class, just read the notes and the exams ask exactly that. You don't even need to show up - it's usually an 08:00 lecture, so you probably don't want to. Textbook is helpful, but get an older version (mine was 50 cents).
Do not take this class if you're looking for an easy A. His exams are MC and very detailed/specific. Must read the text, although the material is very interesting. Overall good professor, but ppt notes are not the greatest.
Awesome Prof who is really passionate and engaging, makes 8am classes worth going to. Highly recommend attending class as he gives little hints during lectures and adds onto the information that are on the slides. Tests are quite difficult, make sure to get the textbook! NOT A GPA BOOSTER COURSE, as others have said you need to apply yourself
Great Prof! Lectures are clear and not boring! Content of course is very interesting but you do need to know it very well in order to get an A! He clearly outlines what will be on midterms and the final, which is nice. Favourite course I've taken so far!
He did an excellent job at removing the stigma and awkwardness around human sexuality. Hecol 211 with him contained the most interesting and engaging lectures of my degree. He did a great job of making sure the students new what was required of them to succeed in his class.
Great prof! I skipped the midterm so my final was worth 95% and I was panicking and skimmed over his notes once and got a 90% on the final. Make sure to write down everything he says in class because he'll ask exactly that!!! You must apply yourself on the exams but he usually bumps everyone's marks up. Really fun class!
This is NOT an easy A course! His MC exams are very detailed/specific, and be prepared to read a LOT. Class attendance is mandatory if you want to do well, which is difficult with 8am classes. Interesting material, but a very very challenging class if you want to get anywhere in the A range.
Such a great resourceful instructor! Super dedicated to his job and would even spend his weekends to help out students with their study.
A funny and caring professor with interesting course material, but I found his lecture notes to be unclear and he often went on tangents during the lectures. The guest speakers were a nice touch but made it hard to judge what would and would not be tested. All details in the textbook, even if not covered in lectures, are fair game for exams.
Great prof
Super kind man. He's always very energetic for his 8am lecture.
Super outdated course Gets basic things wrong; calls fetishes criminal, china and india eastern religions Actively avoids discussing anything that isnt cis/het exams make no sense: brings up stats, asks mainly opinion + random specifics where the right answer is guessing the difference in synonyms u wont learn anything useful here infuriatin
If you're looking for an eye-opening, deep course covering the latest research in the field of human sexuality, you should go to gMac. This course is likely only useful/interesting to people who've never had sex ed before. He's nice but thats it. not helpful/informed. all of my friends hated this course. numbs ur brain. guest speakers are good tho.
This class is in serious need of an update, the information is outdated and some terminology is not only old but offensive. Despite mentioning early on in the course it would be inclusive, it was severely lacking. Any conversations about anything other than the cisgender/heterosexual majority was quickly glossed over and often excluded.
While he is nice, this class is suited for students that have never taken sex ed before. Boring and recycled lectures with dated information being read straight off Power Point slides. The only new information was brought from outside presenters. Exam questions were mainly opinion-based and their lack of grammar was really frustrating!
He is one of the best professors I have come across in the university. His lectures are amazing and he genuinely cares about his students. He also adjusts the marks upwards but his questions can get really specific about useless details and some questions are ambiguous (what best describes this ones) and the random stats. Know the material well.
Really like him as a professor however the tests seem to be quite ambiguous to the material we actually learn and seem to be focused on textbook material a little too much. Was still a great class however!
Clearly has been in the field of sexuality for a long time. He's very knowledgeable and accepting of all material this course covers. He shows lots of videos, some are very very uncomfortable to watch with 200 other people. It's true, a sex store comes to class on valentines day.
One of the most considerate profs and one of my fave courses this year!
I was told that HECOL 211 was an easy A. That is wrong!! Shaniff's tests are pretty tough. You need to do all of the textbook readings and know his powerpoint slides back to front in order to get a decent grade. He always took questions off and rounded marks up but it definitely took a ton of work to get an A.
He was honestly one of my favourite professors I've ever had. He clearly cares for his students and is very generous in grading (frequently bumps up marks but never bumps down). I didn't even read the textbook, everything on the test was covered in class (unless he specified separate readings). Best class of my semester.
Overall he's a good prof. 2 midterms and 1 final (cumulative) all multiple choice. I studied his powerpoint notes, however I did read through the textbook because some questions on his exams are from the textbook but only related to class content. The exams are challenging, but he will take bad questions off to help boost students grades!
Professor Esmail is a solid choice. 2 midterms, 1 final (cumulative). Most of the exams will be tested on lecture powerpoints and things he says in class so the text isnt super needed but a great aid in understanding some concepts. He always seems to bump up grades. One of the better professors Ive had. Would definitely recommend.
I took the class in spring, 1 midterm, 1 final so it was very test heavy! He is hilarious with the, sometimes a little awkward, content. He made sitting through a 3 hour lecture completely bearable. Study lecture notes for exams and go over the textbook for key terms. I thought the exams were very fair.
He is absolutely hilarious and I LOVED going to this class!! It is not an easy class and your entire grade is based off of 2 exams. He goes through the grades after each exam and removes bad questions. Highly recommend this class and this professor!!
Shaniff is one of the best profs Ive had during my semesters here. Loves teaching and is able to help you out with anything you need. Lectures are straightforward and textbook is kind of mandatory if you want to get an A but if you just show up to class and listen you can still get good grades.
Shaniff is great!! Lectures are very interesting and the material is not difficult at all. There are two midterms and he lets you chose whether you write them or not (with weight transferring to final). Exams are a mix between lecture and textbook but straightforward and fair. You will wish every prof was like him!!
He is definitely one of my favorite profs! He makes you want to actually wake up and go to his 8am class. He is super organized and lays out all the information well. I definitely recommend taking this class with him, I have enjoyed it so much!!
A lot of people assume this course is a GPA booster but it is not a walk in the park. There's so much info you need to know. I only took it to boost my GPA and it was my lowest grade. You really need to study every little detail. He's an amazing prof tho, the class just isn't for me.
do NOT take this course as an elective! This course is extremely content-heavy, an 'A' grade is not worth the time. Professor Esmail is an excellent professor, I would highly recommend him if you are interested in taking this class. He truly is a really nice guy and very engaging! Not a GPA booster contrary to other reviews.
I figured this would be a grade booster and while the course content was quite interesting, I found some of the exam questions pretty cheap as they were definitely way more specific than necessary, with lots of focus from a textbook. studied super hard for midterm and was rather disappointed with my mark despite having excellent grades elsewhere.
Shaniif is a 10/10 registered beautician, one of my best profs's in my degree
Esmail is an awesome prof! He's funny and super engaging, would recommend!
this class was fun! However i struggled with the content. Very specific exams, lots of textbook readings (worth grades). 1 midterm, 1 final exam (cumulative). Says lectures are mandatory but then records and posts them? Marks on participation but i struggled to get up at 8am if i knew i could watch them after. lectures are a lot of random discussion
This class is really interesting, but having it online really took away from it. There is a lot of content, and the exams test on really specific details that you wouldn't expect. Shaniff gives good lectures but the exams are not really fair to what he teaches. The content itself is really cool though! Would probably be better not online.
He was a great lecturer and very entertaining. The course content was also very interesting. However, you have to memorize everything he says in class, all of his slideshows, and all of the textbook. It was a lot of work to get a decent grade. I would not recommend taking this course as an elective.
If you are thinking about taking this as a GPA booster... oh my. this is not it. I found that sometimes his jokes we a little inappropriate. The exams are very difficult (esp. final) unless you have 2 weeks to focus on them. The exams are based on very nitty gritty details and extremely long. Quizzes were easy and will save your mark.
This class was extremely interesting but the lectures were disorganized and he tested on extremely specific things that he might have mentioned very briefly or that wasn't thoroughly covered in the textbook. Exams were poorly written, and unnecessarily long. Not a good GPA booster.
You write a midterm that is worth 25%, quizzes through the revel textbook that are 20%, a self-evaluation 5% (must be in class), and a CUMULATIVE final 50%. Reading the textbook is mandatory to pass. The information was interesting, but you must study the textbook and notes in order to pass / get a decent mark. All closed book.
This course is very test-heavy and most of the exams are based on the textbook, so pay attention when you're reading. The content is interesting, but there is a lot of it. Final exam is worth 50% and is cumulative so there's a lot to study for it. Pay attention in class and it's easier. But the textbook readings are a must, lots of little details.
As the other posts mention, the midterm and final are based on pretty specific information and you definitely have to study a lot for them. This class is not a GPA booster, but if you put in the work and enjoy the content it's quite easy to understand and work through. Overall, I'd recommend it.
I thought this course was a GPA booster, I was super wrong. Professor Shaniff is great, but his notes are a little unorganized. It's extremely content-heavy, so I would recommend taking it in the fall or winter term. It's too much work for spring/summer. Overall the content is interesting and fun, but makes you work so hard!
The embodiment of thinking that your smart when your not. How is a 90 an A-. This guy has no brain cells. His final was the most subjective thing ever and super specific. Should be terminated from teaching
I would highly recommend Shaniff as a professor! His lectures are thorough and he provides stories that makes the content easier to understand. This course has a lot of content and the midterm and the final are very difficult, however the quizzes are easy and if you study for the exams you can still get a good mark.
A really nice prof who created a safe environment to discuss sensitive topics. The textbook complimented the lectures very nicely and was a good tool to have. Lectures were generally fun and engaging and I never had problems finding the motivation to attend. I don't think he's teaching HECOL211 anymore but I would recommend him for other courses!
