God I cant explain how horrible this professor is. Rambles on about concepts that have nothing to do with INTL business and never stops talking about his trip to hong kong

Shanks isn't too bad. He DOES make the class read sections of the textbook which is somewhat childish, and he does often waste lecture time with irrelvant information. However, you do leave his courses feeling that you've learned something.
He's cool as he has loads of experience. Global experience

A professor as knowledgable as Shanks is rare. He has years of professional experience, and brings many helpful stories to his lectures. He always finds interesting ways to relate his experiences to the course material. Makes every lecture great. Thanks.
Prof. Shanks is more then just a teacher. When influencing a student or just giving advice, Shanks lets open his knowledge and comments to those that take life seriously. He puts a lot of effort to insure students leave his class learning.
Mr. Shanks is a great professor. He is the perfect person to teach international business beacause he has overseas experience. He has a very laid back approach to teaching, which is always good, and has a good sense of humour.
i wouldn't have even attended classes had shanks not forced in-class assignments. boring class and useless material. easy A.
Shanks is a great prof. knows his stuff, but sometimes goes off topic! A refreshing change from many a prof at Centennial's Biz Dept.
Nice guy that knows what he is talking about except he can't teach. HE SUCKS! He marked our group project in class let us fix the mistakes and then marked it again...what the hell is that. I got an A but not a satisfying one. Damn Shanks!

Shanks is a very interesting man who has lived a fascinating life. That said, be prepared to do alot of learning on your own. When he assigns a project,ask your questions a.s.a.p. He will be less inclined to answer your project questions as the deadline draws near. I enjoyed him!!
Shanks is probably one of the best teachers at Centennial! He gives you real life experiences and is willing to provide you with help or his expertice! Definatly try to get him at least once while you're at Centennial, one of the better teachers!!!!

I have also taken 2 other classes with professor Shanks, and I enjoyed both of them. MKTG 331 and MKTG 335
It was a terrible experience. He makes mistakes and does not admit them. He is an extremely hard marker and has his own standards and ways of teaching and doing things that aren't very common in this part of the world. I'm not the only one who feels that way. Plenty others do too.
Garbage absolute Garbage! Just a dirty garbage professor who as no knowledge of the field, or anything for that matter! He's an ass. And I have full right to say this, because I aced his class, and no thanks to him!!!!!

BEST PROFESSOR. You should read the chapter introductions beside the body-part and all the short answers for his exams. You'll be ok. It's really hard to get something below B/B+/A..Try to get as many (%) as you can from the in-class case studies. He's very helpful and polite. You must form a good group to accomplish any assignment.
Overall all, just memorize his powerpoint and you will be fine. He is good, i like him and the way he teaches. Want easy A or A+ go to him and do what he ask and just to get that good mark, be creative!

He made you present every class which is pointless. ATTEND THE CLASS PRIOR to a test; he tells you what exactly is and isn't the test. As for presentations, don't read off your powerpoint; he'll yell at you for doing so in front of the whole class.

I don't like the way he grades the assignments. He grades inconsistently. For the assignments he uploads through the Internet, you can get 10/15 as your grade without explaining what is your errors. What I would like to say is that he doesn't explain what you did wrongs so that you don't make those mistakes again.
Easy prof... marks easy, makes things seem harder than they really are. You can submit whatever for written assignments and you get a good mark (I don't think he reads what people submit). Tough presentation marker though- be prepped and know everything by heart. First day, I thought I would flunk- ended up getting an A

Absolutely awful. Teaches by rote so appears initially knowledgeable but does not clearly convey assignment instructions and avoids answering any specific questions. Spelling, written grammar and syntax abominable. Deviates from course outline and intimidates rather than educates when critiquing presentations. Should not be allowed to teach.

He gave us an open Book Quiz which was marked extremely scientifically by Rubric method. I didnt do well but then understood how I have ti improve my knowledge,writing it in a strcutured way and with correct captions. Good man.Decent.Clear. Worked in Advertising around the world.Take his class!

Shanks is.. Well he's shanks... This prof has his own category for a teacher... He's very experienced in the business world and well educated and you can tell... But he doesn't relay things well and can come off as rude and cold... The assignments and tests were easy enough and the content was a bit interesting... Warped methods for teaching though
Awe some evaluator .Do study his rubric do the assignment as per that and you learn score and build true knowledge Very very knowledgeable chap and must take his classes.
Assignments: uses turn it in a lot and pretty much uses that to grade your work. (It doesn't seem like he reads your work) Tests: straight from the book. Class: useless after midterm. (brought in guest speakers so don't have to lecture he grades by favouritism. I don't recommend him, but if u have no choice, try to be on his good side. Got an A

Shanks seems to live in his own world. His lectures are in most part unrelated to the actual book content. Sometimes he makes people feel very uncomfortable. Interrupt students during presentations. I don't recommend.
Shanks is a cool guy with so much knowledge about business. he constantly encourages his students to study hard not only for grades but better your life.
His tests are simple and straight-forward and he usually goes over the topics. However, he lacks clarity and grammar and DOES NOT make it clear what his full expectations are for presentations. For presentations, ALWAYS ask him what you are required to do because he is not concise. He will also call you out on mistakes, even small ones.
Shanks was not a bad teacher, however, there were a few group assignments which were difficult and he was not very understanding or helpful in assisting us. When it comes down to presentations, he is very intimidating and makes it harder; he once made a student cry. His lectures weren't too bad, however, I would skip him if I had the chance.

Really bad! The sad thing is he has experience and could be interesting. He is just disorganized: Gives assignments, no rubrics, always ask more and does not write it down. All classes talking about himself, not about his bus. experience. reads the slides (not done by him), and read the book. Has no clear methods of evaluating students.

He knows about business and for that I respect him, but the way he grades is not that fair. He wants students to say exactly what he said (as in he is always right) and he clearly has a preference for students coming from India. He is talented, no doubt on that, but many time he was too self-centred.
I really enjoyed his teaching style, he is very experienced, and tells so many real life experiences and stories to help teach the course. His lectures are far from boring, but he is a bit of a hard marker as he is very particular. Overall, very nice teacher, well respected, humorous, and NOT BORING!

Professor gives a lot of assignments with poor and outdated examples. He does not give clearly instructions of what to do in assignments and he is a very tough professor. He makes access difficult to get maximum grades even if you understand his lectures.

He was very unorganized in terms of layout, criteria were not specific and the amount of condensed work he gives is unrelenting. Way too many discussions but the assignments weren't the worst but with everything he gives you at once it becomes stressful, you need to manage your time well with this class or you will fail. Grading is done at the end

I failed the course. The detailed way with evidence he gave me showed I did not spend even 2 hrs when it should have been 40 hrs. He is that thorough. Who can fault that? Thru semester he showed that detailing but I ignored it busy making friends and not focussing on being a academic studentvwho learns and earns marks.

This guy gives terrible feedback. Instructions are purposefully vague and unclear so he can grade you however he sees fit rather than on the material. Doesn't know how to teach anything beyond boasting about himself. Would highly discourage anyone from signing up for his class unless you are as egotistical as this man.
Plan on spending most of your days stressed out that you might fail. His lectures are a complete waste of time since he doesn't cover any of the material but rather speaks about his own personal experiences which have nothing to do with the tests or homework. Skip this professor and find someone else for your business courses. Thank me later.

Save you're money and time... very difficult to pass his classes unless you get on his good side because shanks plays favorites. if you try to be his friend and tell him he's brilliant and great then you'll probably get an A... opt for literally anyone else to complete required courses!!

I previously took this professors BUSN119 class and unfortunately during enrollment this semester I got stuck with him again because I waited too long. it's all the same. Lectures are a waste of time since he doesn't even cover the material most of the time. The weather is less moody than his grading. Expect to be disappointed with everything..
My first semester at centennial college and I really hope there's not other professor's like this one. only a few weeks in and it's already bad. F on a paper and he says i didn't follow instructions but I did it the same way he presented it in class. some of the first assignments read like they were also probably like 10 years old and being reused
If a student does not fo it right he is pretty clear about his instructions which are so crystal clear. Do if the student misses something they must acknowledge they messed up
At 32 he was CEO in HK and that is an achievement. When he narrates his experiences in Dubai, NYC, Toronto and elsewhere in the corporate line they are so magical and yet make sense. His caring for students to succeed is unparallel. Only the best will get it. Not everyone gets it.

I read the reviews here before taking this class and I should have saw it coming. I can see there's a lot more since I last checked, so I'm not alone in my frustrations. If anyone reading this ends up here, I highly suggest you choose any other professor no matter which class you are taking. There's so many things wrong with this prof.

Shanks is a extremely difficult professor to work with to say the least. I have spent countless hours trying to contact him and obtain clarification on assignment instructions and also his feedback on graded work. He will tell you that you didn't read the instructions despite his instructions being lackluster and incomplete.
World class lectures and detailing. You can see sample your work and compare. Why not accept consequences of what you do not right? He is on the ball and never drops it.
He cares for students. He is doing his job by being straight forward in his feedback. Some students dont get itcand instead blame him. He is excellent

Shanks is easily the hardest business professor at Centennial. He does not often respond to inquiries about homework via email. The posted guidance online for assignments is very sparse. Business 119 with professor Shanks is a waste of money and time. The course material itself is not bad and can help you learn various things about Business, but the teaching style leaves a lot to be desired. I think this course is good, but the professor needs some improvement, especially when it comes to assignment grading and feedback.

The information he posts online about homework is also very vague and leaves a lot of for interpretation. Getting a passing grade in his class is extremely hard
Shanks typically spends a good amount of time on his phone during class and seems distracted quite often. Rather than cover class material outlined on day 1, he also often boasts about his own personal achievements relating to business. The lack of material coverage leaves me very unprepared for homework and quizzes. Would not recommend

Mr. Shanks teaches a very hard class and does not put the effort that you would expect from a typical teacher. Some assignments, especially ones we got early on in the semester were copy pasted from many years prior and it was obvious because the directions were for a very old version of the website. Would suggest opting for a different professor.
Avoid! Makes grading criteria for assignments open ended and illogical. Does not provide reviews for tests. Barely teaches subject matter in class and spends the majority of class telling stories about himself. You will have to teach yourself most material if you want to pass this class. Rarely responds to emails. Difficult to meet out of class.
This professor incessantly talks about himself. Uses recycled materials for the course. Every time there is an assignment, he should be included in the paper to feed his ego or else you will get a C or even an F. Do not take any course taught by Shanks, you will not learn anything other than how bragadaocious he is.
Every time I attend his classes, he only talks about himself. When he talks about an assignment, he just switches to himself, his life, his ego, how handsome he is, how popular he is or whatever. The instructions given are very vague, so it is very hard to understand what to do. Very tough grader for the assignments.
2 hours of listening to the guy and I learnt more from reading a few pages in about 5 minutes. Instructions in assignments are not as clear as they may seem. Don't know why he wants his name mentioned so badly. To me he is just not clear on what we should do in our assignments and the most useless 2 hours of "lectures" about life examples and stuff
He is a waste of my money. He never teaches anything, but all things about him. His method is not for a college-level, nor at any level. He can make a good host for his talk show tho. Other things: 1. Unclear instructions on assignments 2. He puts general comments to all w/ random grades 3. Rarely uses books, but he wants us to observe APA
His classes are just basically him talking about himself. He's egocentric, his classes are boring and the rubrics in the assignments are very confusing.

There are no clear benchmarks for grading papers. Even if you did your outmost to follow all instructions, when your paper gets graded, there will be a surprise rubric (no one but the professor knows about) that will be factored into the grading. Hilarious
Tough, unfair grader. Gives confusing instructions and the mark he wants and you can't say anything. He is egocentric and only likes to talk about his accomplishments and to be mentioned in papers, this is the only way you will get a good grade. He also leaves so much work, 1 paper per week plus at least 2 discussion boards weekly.

Avoid this professor as much as you can. giving instruction is unclear. always has a change on the day of checking assignments, not lecturing, just telling stories of his life. To the future student of him goodluck.
gives rude feedback and refuses to talk about it. and addresses it as "we" students are wrong never him. and if we ask him to take another look at our assignment, he responds to it as "he was tempted to refuse such work". always talk about his son and daughter-in-law, which doesn't even relate to the lecture
This professor is someone whom you do not want to have on your timetable. He is someone who can't accept responsibility for inconsistencies or errors in instructions and instead will blame the students for not being able to read his mind. When you ask him questions, he will give you the most vague and unhelpful answers imaginable. AVOID!
he assigns a lot more homework than most professors. the assignments themselves are not difficult though, but instead trying to figure out what we are supposed to do is impossible. it's like he gives purposeful unclear directions so that we are not able to succeed. very unapproachable and not professional, was a waste of money and time

Make sure you sign up for classes as early as possible to avoid ending up in a class with Shanks because you had no choices left. Everyone picks his classes last and now I know why. Shanks is a great professor, but you have to be willing to give 110% if you have him. He truly cares about educating students and isn't in it for a paycheck. He often speaks from experience and telling interesting/funny stories to reinforce concepts. Puts a lot of emphasis on proper format. Marking is a little screwy. He'll make you work hard tho.

I understand why many students didn't like Shanks. But honestly he was outstanding, he gave the best advice. He related most of it to his experiences and he had many great funny/useful stories to tell. They inspired me and taught me to know more about management in workplaces. Is a bit tough on APA format so make sure you use the one he outlines.
