amazing teacher, clear and fun
Funnest most interesting class taken in college. Material is intersting, but the in class dicussions were priceless!
Shannon was super rad. He has such a great understanding of what needs to be taught. Also involves the class in every way possible. I would recommend him to anyone!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic professor. knows what he is talking about and is very helpful in explaining anything. Best philosophy professor ever.
Great teacher, a lot of fun. He is happy and willing to help anyone out anyway he can.
Great teacher! He is very clear, interesting, and funny. This was one of my favorite classes.
EXTREMELY HELPFUL
Awesome teacher. I would definitely take a class from him again, and I highly recommend him. He's hilarious, his discussions are great, doesn't give a lot of homework, and his tests are easy.
Great instructor. Good lecture, open discussions, great sense of humor.
I don't really involve myself with religion in general, but this class was AWESOME ! Shannon is great, and you will always end up having a debate at the end of the class. Very helpful teacher. He knows his stuff. Also, class attendance is mandatory, but after 2 classes, you will not want to miss a class. He is hilarious, and the discussion are great
Shannon is awesome. He has a keen attention to the class and getting everyone involved. He grades very fairly. He gives a lot of feedback. I have emailed this guy an encyclopedia at a time practically and he is receptive. He is a prime example of the kind of teacher you remember. When you give this man a coke he has a LOT (REALLY) of energy! Wow!
Best teacher in the world. I have had him twice now and he keeps every one interested in the subject. The stuff he teaches is life changing and well worth knowing. The class is all lecture with the help of handouts that you fill out as he talks. each handout has about 6 q's and then the answer to those q's are what are on the test.
Shannon is every college students dream professor. He's easy to talk to, to discuss things with. He encourages discussion in class, he tells hysterical anecdotes (road rage, and the toad of light were my favs), has an evident passion for teaching, respects all walks of life and opinions. He is a teaching GOD. Yeah, he's great.
Shannon is great. If you are taking philosophy and can get this instructor, do it. He makes you work but then that's we learn
I absolutely loved this class. It had nothing to do with the class, though, it was the way that Shannon taught it. He is fantastic.
Shannon is a good teacher, he does make the class interesting. Some how i survived a 4 hour class! The only negative thing i would criticize Shannon on would be his tests. They do require u to study, which i did and still didn't do great. He just words them in a way that is very confusing. Do your HW & attend & participate and you'll be fine.
Shannon is great, you'll certainly enjoy this class.
Shannon is the best professor I have had ... EVER! He is funny, clear, and he really wants everyone to engage in his class. He is open to let anyone talk ... liberal to conservative! His tests are tough, and he wants you to take the papers seriously, but it is easy to do because you love the class! TAKE HIS CLASSES!
Followed the planned schedule well. Gave great examples of concepts in class to help you understand. Very engaging professor, encouraged open class discussions. Book was hard to understand, but he gave us a list of what exactly we needed to know. Study class notes for exams, read chapters before class and you'll do great. Replies fast to e-mails.
Shannon is for sure the best teacher I have ever had! He was very engaging, and brought the whole classroom into discussion. I actually looked forward to going to school! I will be taking another class he offers this semester. There is homework for this class, but it isn't hard, comes straight out of the book. Take this class!!!!
This is the best teacher I have ever had! He has a passion for Philosophy and learning like no one I have ever met. He is very knowledgeable and very helpful. Lots of essays and papers, great class discussion. I will take another of his classes just for the sheer joy of learning from a great professor!
Hands down the best teacher to walk the face of this earth. Number one it's just a great class and an awesome teachers, but the stuff you'll learn from Shannon will change how you look at life. His World Religion class helped me teach more on my LDS mission than what I learned in the MTC.
Shannon is great. Enthusiastic, intelligent, etc.. The girls in the class also thought he was way hot so that could be a plus. Overall, decent workload and very interesting.
This is one of the Greatest teachers that I have ever had. Its fun and insteresting. Just follow the handouts and the tests are a breeze. There are two 5 page papers to write but he will help you through it if you need it.
Shannon is super funny he makes class fun and the discussions are amazing. You are going to have to read in this class and participate if you want a good grade but I looked forward to this class everyday despite the fact that I don't overly enjoy philosophy. I would highly recommend taking a class from Shannon.
I thank God that gave me the opportunity to meet this great teacher. It's the best I've had in my life. thanks Shannon. And please never change.
I am so happy to have had the opportunity to take Shannon's class! He has such a passion for what he teaches - the material is fascinating, and as long as you follow the handouts and are prepared with questions for your religious service, you'll do great! :)
Shannon is one of those rare professors who can take difficult or potentially boring material and make it interesting, funny, and useful. I loved this class so much and having someone with a passion for teaching, his students, and his subject matter was what made it so. His expectations are high but he will assist and he is very clear. Loved it!!
Absolutely amazing instructor! If you are thinking about taking philosophy, take it from this guy. Wonderful learning experience.
Shannon is the best teacher I have ever had in my college experience. He is funny, and truly cares about his students. I would highly recommend him.
Very fun class! He makes things fun and something you would want to listen to! i would so take this class again! Just make sure you do some reading on your own to understand the concepts
Shannon seemed to know everything there was about this subject. His teaching methods are very entertaining, interesting and productive. I hope to take another class from him.
Phenomenal professor. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is required to take this course if you want to actually learn and have a good time. Knows his material, teaches it in an interesting way, great discussions, and fun sense of humor. One of the best professors I've ever had. Pay attention to his reviews and you'll ace the tests.
Absolutely incredible professor. I looked forward to every one of his classes. He is extremely funny & so, so passionate about what he teaches that you can't help but love the subject like he does. Everybody should be in a class taught by him!
Shannon is the best teacher I have ever had! He makes the class easy to understand because he uses examples and comparisons. The class discussions make the class stay interesting. He never shy's away from anyone's opinion. He helped me on a paper I wrote, it wasn't clear to his directions. But he worked with me so I could improve. Take this class!
I absolutely love Shannon. He is super funny and makes the classroom a comfortable and entertaining environment. I've taken two of his classes and would take them both over again in a heart beat. I will be sad when this semester is over and I don't get to hangout in his classroom anymore.
This was my favorite class of the semester. At first I took it just for humanities, but I LOVED it. Shannon is an awesome professor and teaches you much more about college than just Humanities!
Shannon was absolutely the best teach I've ever had in my life. Soooo funny. His discussions were super captivating as well. Seriously take his class. I'm not exaggerating when I say he's the absolute best teacher I've ever had in my life. Uses book, but you don't need it. You can google everything. Expects you to do homework and participate.
I absolutely loved this class! Shannon is one of the best instructors I've ever had. He does an awesome job at explaining the material and he's hilarious! The class wasn't easy though. It consisted of weekly handouts, 2 papers, and 2 tests. As long as you use the handouts as a review for the tests, you will do fine. I highly recommend this teacher!
It's true he is an entertaining, fun professor. In class discussions keep topics lively and casual. But some of the lectures just seem like a vocab list I could've done at home. The tests and homework assignments are very do-able... just stick to what you learn in class. The religious service paper rubrics are challenging though-subjective grading.
Excellent professor! Class was always entertaining and informative.
This class was my absolute favorite! Shannon makes it VERY easy to understand and grasp the concepts, plus he is extremely humorous and entertaining. I learned so much and have never been more excited about a course. He is non biased on all levels and presents each theorybelief objectively. He is by far the best teacher I've had thus far.
Has handout reviews, likes for you to have it done because he does random checks for credit, goes over it in class. show up and communicate, easy A there, has you attend religion services, makes you right TWO 5-7 page paper for service, has an eportfolio assignment.
Shannon is a great educator and he is absolutely hilarious! I enjoyed his class a lot. However, his class is not easy, you must WORK for your A! The tests are challenging and the papers are pretty harshly graded, but it was overall a great class. I learned a ton! If you are up to a challenge, definitely take a class from Shannon!
Shannon is a great teacher. He teaches the World Religions class so that we can have a greater respect for other religions in which he accomplished. He is very interesting and very funny. He does a review and handouts to help you on the test. This was the only class that I have taken where most of the class was still attending at the end.
Best professor ever. He's funny, and makes lectures memorable. I honestly learned more in this course than in any other class of my life. Want a professor who will make you laugh while actually teaching you? You couldn't possibly do better than this guy. Take his class, you won't ever regret it!
Shannon definitely knows his stuff, he tells you what is on his two tests, tells you what to study. There is a fair amount of reading for the class, generally about 25 pages a week, and a worksheet that goes with each chapter. He does a good job of keeping the class interesting and keeping students engaged. Funny, entertaining, really a nice guy.
Shannon has a great head on his shoulders. For Philosophy of Religion, definitely a great instructor. While it is necessary to attend class, participate, and do a decent amount of homework on time, you will enjoy his class. He has a good sense of humor, and if you are good at critical thinking, reading, and writing, you will do great!
Great professor, great class. Lectures were always engaging. Funny, down to earth, authentic person. Knows his stuff.
Shannon is one of the greatest teachers I've had! His class is tough on the account that you have homework due in every class, 2 papers, and 2 tests. His class is extremely easy if you go to class, listen to his lectures, & take notes. He literally gives EVERY SINGLE ANSWER you need to pass your tests. He's HILARIOUS & so genuine! Amazing teacher!!
Atkinson is absolutely awesome. He definitely cares about his students and the subjects he teaches. Class discussions always taught me something, and were very clear and encouraged participation from everyone. He was always down to help me understand concepts I wasn't clear on, and made class fun.
Shannon is seriously the best teacher I have ever had. He makes the class fun and interesting. He is also a great teacher in that he makes you WANT to learn the material. I would recommend his class for sure!
I only took this class because it covered for my Humanities elective but for a intro class he try's to hard. I mean he's a great teacher but you do need to study and write your papers efficiently which sucked because this class was always the last thing on my mind. Not a easy A.
Looking for a dark-haired, man-bun, philosophical enchanting professor? Look no further! I can't say enough wonderful things about Shannon and his class. Shannon's lectures are interesting, educational, and inspiring. He will leave you questioning philosophy for the rest of the week. You will need to study, but it's definitely worth it.
Took Shannon my first semester of college and fell in love. He is such a wonderful instructor. During his lectures, he makes the content in the book easy to understand and so interesting! I looked forward to going to his class. He is hilarious too.
I loved taking Philosophy from Shannon. He was a great inspiration to me and I've been influenced by his teaching years later. Thank you!
Shannon is one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. Period. He is hilarious, and is so intensely excited for you to learn. He is the kind of teacher that really enjoys teaching. I have always understood what he was trying to say. The only work is filling out the chapter guides, and mid term and finals, and papers.
From the first 5 minutes of the 1st class, Shannon has you engaged and ready to participate. He doesn't lecture as much as he guides discussions on the subject at hand, which makes class very interesting. His stories help the material stick, and he is very engaging overall. The only drawback is that you have to read every chapter before each class.
Shannon was a great teacher. He was engaging and made sure everyone understood the content. If you don't go to the lecture, you'll probably not understand a lot of the material. I bought the textbook halfway through the semester and pulled out with a B+. STUDY FOR THE TESTS!!!!! Basically, just link all the material together and you will do great.
I really liked pretty much everything about this class. Professor Atkinson was entertaining and kept the discussion on track with skill and verve.
Lectures aren't just informational, they're also entertaining. This makes them easier to remember. I had a blast in this class and learned a lot. If my family had seen how often I spoke up they wouldn't have recognized me. It was that welcoming of an environment.
Such an amazing instructor! Makes the class so much fun. He's very animated and keeps the class engaged. Wonderful instruction and keeps the class subjects simple. Amazing!
I absolutely love Shannon. He's incredibly likable and he really cares about his students learning. Additionally, he makes his classes a blast. He's super funny and he inspires so much motivation and open discussion.
Shannon's class was absolutely fantastic. If his classes lined up with my schedule more, I would take every philosophy class possible from him. The structure of his class is formal, but he approaches the material informally. In doing so, it makes everything much easier to learn.
This class was both immensely entertaining (Shannon is hilarious) but also incredibly informative. I learned something new every day in his class. Attendance and participation are both super important, so if you struggle with that, then beware, but I enjoyed this class so much that motivating myself to get up every morning was easy. 10/10
Shannon, is an incredible professor. Always amped on the issues we discussed in class. Makes the class fun and interesting always allowing for exploration and growth.
The best teacher I have ever had. SLCC is lucky to have him on the staff. I took his class in 2007 and the impression he left on me is still there.
This professor was really amazing! He embodied the philosophers that he taught about. Ask him about his philosopher hat and which one he likes the best. His criteria was clear and easy to understand, hes funny and easily approachable. The hard part is probably keeping up with the reading requirements but its totally worth it as a first year student
Excellent lecturer. Probably the best lecturer at Salt Lake Community College I've taken courses from so far. Extremely knowledgeable on all the subject matter. Fair grader and gives good feedback on student's written papers. SLCC has a world class Philosophy department.
He is so funny and nice! And is very clear with assignments
His class has been my favorite at SLCC by far. His lectures are awesome, and very engaging. Attendance isn't mandatory, but after the first couple classes you won't WANT to miss it! He grades fairly, and gives outstanding feedback. It's an easy class to pass, but you'll have to put in the effort if you want an A. Overall, just a great professor.
Shannon is a good teacher. He really cares, and he is super straight forward with expectations. He gives every answer for the tests during the in class reviews, so if you take notes, you're golden. Plus, he's not bad to look at.
Shannon is a phenomenal teacher. He truly cares about students and is straight forward with expectations. He gives every answer for the tests during the in class reviews, so the tests are a breeze if you pay attention and attend class regularly. I would highly recommend you take any and every course he teaches at SLCC or Utah Valley University.
Best professor I have ever had! "Best" meaning he (is): knowledgeable, thoughtful, hilarious, clear, teaches for understanding, willing to work with you, presents ideas clearly, genuinely wants you to do well in the class and learn something new, passionate, personable, caring, and inspirational. He also memorizes every student's name. 100/100.
Shannon is an amazing teacher, he is personable, funny and easy to talk to. He is direct with the handouts he uses for assignments by giving you the information you need to know and no more , no less. He goes over test questions with you right off the handouts so if you just show up to class and do all the work you'll probably get an A.
Shannon is an incredible teacher, he is hilarious, and will undoubtedly leave a indelible impression on you. His test questions come right off the handouts and lectures so tests are a piece of cake if you show up regularly and take notes. I would strongly advise any and all students to take any course he teaches at SLCC or Utah Valley University.
Easily one of the best instructors I've ever had. He makes participation easy, with a laid back feel to the lectures. He is hilarious. This course challenges your beliefs no matter what side you are on, so don't take it if you are closed minded to other views. He really cares that you think and that you try if you do that you will love this course
What can I say about Shannon... he really knows the material and he has a good sense of how the particular philosopher would likely argue against you. Class participation is a must to get everything you can out of his class. If you truly want to understand the material that is being presented and want to challenge your own philosophy, participate.
Everyday in class was worth showing up to, I loved every minute even though a large amount of the the material seemed religious, but it was very educational. Shannon was an amazing teacher, if he wasn't teaching this then I wouldn't want to take this class. There were a couple real essays but not the end of the world if you know the material
One of the best teachers I have had!
Shannon is a phenomenal and caring teacher, he is hilarious, and will undoubtedly leave a indelible impression upon you. His test questions come right off the handouts and lectures so tests are a piece of cake if you show up regularly and take notes. I would strongly advise any and all of my peers to take any course he teaches at SLCC or UVU.
Every day in class was worth showing up to. I honestly loved every minute of the course and wish I could take it all over again. Shannon truly was an amazing teacher, and he left an indelible impression on me and other students in the course. There were a couple real essays and tests, but not the end of the world if you know the material.
Shannon was only the professor of this course for a month, but what he did in that short amount of time warrants this review. He puts so much thought into his lectures and is a kind professor. It is clear that he truly cares about his profession and wants to make his courses interesting and fun while still teaching. He is the very best. I miss him.
SHANNON! I LOVE YOU SHANNON!! read in an irish accent
Great professor, lucid explanations, and just generally interesting. PHD guy. Humour is a plus.
Best professor at SLCC. If you have the chance to take his class, you definitely should, you will NOT regret it!
Prof Shannon is a true professor, he authentically professes on the philosophy of religion. His depth of knowledge on the wide spectrum of theology is astounding and he employs a personified presentation of each philosophic argument which does their progenitors proud. Written exams and essays will ensure that you know the material, he covers it all
I loved Professor Atkinson's class this past semester I took Religions 2300 and highly enjoyed learning about the religions of the world. Shannon does awesome, and his sense of humor is amazing, respect goes to a professor who makes you laugh. Assignments are straightforward and easy, a lot of them were really fun. Took the class online.
World rel. 4 virtual or in person assign. Sig assign. Easy reflection papers. Direct sense of humor but extremely helpful if you reach out to him. Kind of feels like a 4 credit hour class but it's dooable long as you stay on top of it all. Great professor. Seems to Grade on comprehension more than perfection. Quick grader. Love Atkins!
Best professor I have ever had. Incredibly passionate and funny, would highly recommend. He is the most engaging and fun teacher.
This class is not about religion specifically, it is philosophy about religion and usually God. There is about one "handout" and one discussion post do each week in the online class. Grading was easy if you completed the assignments but there is quite a bit to write. There is a paper due at the midterm and one do at the end of the semester.
Super fun guy with witty humor, he will joke with you. the class has a lot of discussions in person so it's interactive. He has a fair amount of homework with writing but I dislike writing so it might be not a big deal for others.
Shannon is great! Tests every couple of weeks, discussions every week along with a paper every other week (consisting of visiting a religious service either online/in person), and helpful lectures. There are penalties for late work though. But other than that he's helpful and great at teaching. Also super funny and makes lectures fun + productive!
He does have work for you to do but when you do the work class becomes more fun. I like his class because not only is he funny but he relates it to life. He is very clear with standards and will go through the exam so you know what to study then the rest is up to you.
the expectation is above the requirement. Weekly: 2 Modules, 2 discussions, 4 replies, 2 Handouts. 2 papers of five pages, and tone of criteria. One midterm exam and one final exam, the exam has 29 questions multiple choice, 6 question types, and one essay of 25 points of 4 full paragraph essays, all for just one exam of an hour and a half. Awful.
I don't have words for how much I love his class and wanting to be there every day and wanting to succeed in his class. he makes his class so fun each religion is interesting to learn about. I don't know what else to say other than a 10/10 professor and if you're looking for a better education on religion than look no futher than Perfessor Shannon.
Show interest, curiosity, and truly try to connect with what you're learning about per module. Prof.Atkinson notices students who are trying their best and putting forth the effort. This class is A LOT of writing, but no quizzes. Each module has 2 discussion posts and 2 written assignments (a personal reflection, and attending a service).
Shannon is the best professor I've had so far. His lectures are always filled with so much information and he explains everything in very unique ways making it easier to remember. I used to get really nervous participating in class but he never made my questions or examples seem dumb like some professors and I really appreciate that. He's the best!
Shannon gives amazing lectures and you can tell that he is passionate about teaching and the subjects. He gives good feedback and isn't a harsh grader. The midterm and final exam are pretty extensive but not too bad if you attend the lectures.
Engaging professor with a great sense of humor. The class challenges your beliefs, but Shannon ensures you think critically. Lectures are worth attending, and tests are straightforward if you keep up with the material. unstuck AI was a helpful study tool.
I thought that the class would be an easy A, but it was not. The class wasn't hard, but just more work than expected. Prof. Atkinson really made me think deeper about myself and my beliefs. He was very patient with me and my health issues. He would allow me to make corrections to assignments when I was struggling most. I would 100% take him again.
I loved taking this class from Shannon. I will say he left some pretty funny comments on my work so I'll reading those. You do need to write a lot of papers but it's not to difficult if you attend the services. I highly recommend you turn your assignments in on TIME it will save your grade, trust me.
Professor Atkinson has been one of my favorite professors I've had at SLCC. This class has challenge me to think in new ways. It is very writing heavy but as long as you stay on top of things it is manageable. He grades fairly and keeps class interesting. As long as you go to class and stay on top of the assignments you'll be fine.
Taking his class rn actually. he is a very good teacher and never says your wrong. Everyone has a different opinion and perspective and he respects that. Honestly the homework and lectures are not heavy neither is the reading. He teaches really good and simplifies things really well. Def take his class!!
At the beginning I was scare of the class, but the professor is very clear in the instructions and with his feedback, I loved this class, and I will take other class with him, if it is available.
Great professor, very personable and kind. Grading is fair and he gives a lot of feedback and help. There is a paper weekly but terribly hard.
He is one of the best professors I've ever had. He hilarious, so brilliant, passionate and so knowledgable. It didn't matter the topic that was covered in class--Shannon was always educated and respectful and kind, always making sure our questions were answered. 10000000000/10 class. Also spoiler alert, Shannon is a dude, and a great one at that.
SHANNON I LOVE YOU!!!! best prof. ever. Super accommodating, cares a ton about his students and the content, gives good feedback and is open to feedback himself. Wonderful experience, 10/10. I will miss him as I'm not a phil/hu student and this was an elective, but I 100% reccommend this class and him as a professor!
This is a teacher whose homework you will go to when you need a break from school. Not that you won't have to do work, there is plenty. It will just be fun and inspiring. He teaches with humor and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. When you have questions he is very responsive and engaging as well.
