Dr. Butler is an amazing professor! Although the lectures during summer are pretty lengthy, her style of teaching made lectures very enjoyable and interesting. She includes learning objectives on a slide at the beginning of every powerpoint which is extremely helpful for midterms and the final. Would definitely recommend taking her class!
Professor Butler has a fun energy to her. She is really cool and passionate about the material. The lectures are a little long but she explains the information thoroughly so it is easier to understand. There are weekly assignments with a midterm and final. Lectures are somewhat mandatory because she does clicker questions. Definitely recommend.
I have taken 2 classes with Dr. Butler and I honestly feel she is one of the best BILD teachers at UCSD. She truly cares about her students and genuinely wants them to learn and pass the class. I highly recommend taking her!
She explains the concepts very well and often gives you learning objectives that can prepare you well for the exam. Her test is half MC and FRQ, which can be overwhelming to finish within one hour. However, if you take good notes and answer every learning objective well, the exam should not be a problem for you. Discussion is mandatory which sucks
Professor Butler is one of the clearest lecturers I've had, she explains all concepts clearly and everything in the lectures is fair game for her exams. 4 tests, 80 points each, half MC half FRQ. She gives you just enough time to finish the exams and grades strictly, so the whole class is pure memorization. Always available for OH, she's great!
Just take her. She is literally the best. Just do it. Literally the best bio professor where you are able to learn very in-depth information and get a good grade. Really was a pleasure to be her students.
This class has been so stressful because the way Dr. Butler explains concepts is very roundabout, and her tests are very application based. We have lecture quizzes, but they aren't application based like her tests. I wish she gave more opportunities to practice for exam content. Also, the lectures aren't always posted on time..
This prof is really nice person, but her lecture style and content does not really explain enough to match up with what you see on exams. You are also not allowed to go back after completing a question on the exam so it makes an already unnatural testing environment (Online) even more stressful, which sucks because MC is worth a lot on her exams.
Professor Butler shows compassion for her students and truly tries to engage us with discussion questions throughout her lectures. However, I wish that her lecture slides have more information on them rather than just pictures. Her exams were also difficult to finish within the time range. Also, some concepts on the exam were not stressed enough.
Loved this class! I thought the material was easy to grasp and Dr. B makes the material so much fun to learn. The exams require studying, they are not too difficult, but you MUSt study in order to perform well on them. You have to keep up with the material because even though it is easy to understand, there is plenty of it. 10/10 would recommend.
I literally didnt study but i have lots of bio background so the class was easy. She is not good at explaining things that I already am knowledgable on and sometimes her test questions arent thaaat clear, but still easiest bio class. No book, she drops lowest test grade no midterm or final. 5 exams, lecture checks, discussion partic. & no curve.
Seems nice but her lectures were far off from what the exams were expecting you to know. I found myself rushing through the exams in order to finish within the time limit. The questions are so application based that it took time to think about but she doesnt give you enough time to finish. Also says um every other word and its distracting
AVOID HER, she does not know how to teach at all. She talks way too fast and her lectures are usually 30 minutes, and cover stuff that should take 80 minutes to cover. She doesn't give you enough information necessary in lectures to do well, and quite frankly seems like she does not enjoy teaching.
By far the easiest online course I have taken at UCSD. I watch her pre-recorded lectures on 2X speed 2 times to prepare for her exams and that is good enough to prepare for her exams. I recommend her if you want an easy A. She has 2 midterms and a final. She makes her discussion sections mandatory which is completely unnecessary for this class.
She's not the best at teaching but you could honestly self-study the material. She's super strict about her bs policies like you can't see your exams or ask for regrades because she's selfish and wants to recycle the questions. Her excuse is that she gives u feedback on lec checks and doesn't wanna "waste everyone's time" which is the lamest excuse
Solid professor and very interesting class. Lectures were super straightforward and concise and the lecture checks were a good way to see what type of material you'd be tested on later. Only 3 exams and they were all non-cumulative. Just make sure to keep your notes detailed and watch the IA review sessions before taking them.
Pretty understanding and a decent professor. I have some bio background and the class was really easy. Not a huge fan of her lectures, but they weren't bad. Drops lowest exam (5 total and noncumulative) and no midterm/final.
Lectures are straightforward and there were mini quizzes after you watch them which were fine. Exams, however, I felt were a little more difficult than lectures or slide notes that were provided. Some things I felt were not discussed so make sure you pay attention for small details.
She is exactly everything you do NOT want to see in a professor. She is rude and ignores students' comments and concerns. She always has an awful attitude and does not take criticism well. She does not let you see your exams and her exams are nothing like the practice problems she gives. She gets angry when you ask her questions. Avoid if you can!!
Pros: clear grading criteria, very organized, accessible outside of class Cons: very rude and passive aggressive when you speak to her/ask questions/email her, posts angry announcements often, exams are nothing like practice questions, unnecessary mandatory discussion activities, no feedback on your exams/grade, confusing language on tests & HWs
Dr. Butler is sooooo boring and I find her lectures to be extremely unorganized. Her class is pretty easy but I think that's due to the fact that the material is easy. It almost seems like she reads off of her slides and to reiterate, her slides/lectures are so unorganized and boring. Would not recommend.
I guess she was ok. Lectures were disorganized, being online was bad. I like the class structure with tests/ no final, but feel like I had to do all the work and research on my own to succeed. There is not that much homework, just long lectures and lots of notes. I'd go with someone else but you will be fine if you take this class.
The class I took was online and asynchronous, so I could do the lectures whenever, but they have to be done within a certain time. Her lectures are super interesting and the work outside of class is pretty light. STUDY HABITS ARE A MUST, I made study guides with the learning objectives and went off of those.
Definitely one of my worse professors. Her lectures were very disorganized and felt like she was just reading the slides rather than explaining the course material. Exams were subsequently harder compared to the lectures and test on detail, so you have to study. Taking this class reduced my interest in biology, which is my major.
Not a very difficult class, but that was likely because I was already familiar with the content. If you are not familiar with the content, I can see this class being challenging. The lectures are concise, but the content is not explained very well. Not assignment heavy, just study well for tests. Discussion sections are mandatory.
As someone who isn't a biology major, she made the class more difficult than it should have been. I do not recommend unless you really need to. Even her lectures did not help with tests/exams, they were so much harder. It felt impossible to even pass.
Her slides are very unorganized and hard to take notes on. Nevertheless, her class is really easy if you study and use common sense. In this way, I guess it balances out. I felt that the TAs were more helpful and cared about my learning more.
At times the exams seemed like they included content that was intentionally glossed over in the lectures which made things tricky, but overall a good professor especially with how difficult teaching a fully online class can be.
Took online FA21. 4 midterms: non-cumulative, mostly multiple choice with some short answer on Canvas, lowest dropped if >50%. No final. All lectures async. Best way to study: be able to fully answer/understand all learning targets. Some review from IB/AP biology. Medium-low workload (lectures, quick lecture checks/quizzes), midterms, discussions.
You can tell Prof. Butler really cares about the subject and her students. She made the class really interesting and as long as you keep up with lectures, you can get an A in the class. I would definitely recommend this professor!
There are 4 tests including final. Lots of information. Lectures are asynchronous. Discussions are mandatory and synchronous. Few homework. Tests are online, quite difficult. You can not change your previous questions, one question at one time, only 55 min to complete 20+ mc questions, 1-3 short answer questions. Drops lowest test score if pass all
Lectures were all asynchronous, but very clear. I felt she explained topics well, and I had basically no experience in biology. Nearly the entire grade was 4 tests, but she was accommodating of technical difficulties. Tests were somewhat difficult, but not impossible, and the lowest one gets dropped. A solid choice for a professor. Few readings.
Her note template is messy and does not cover things on tests. Lecture full of reading slides, and just assume that you know everything. Very hard for someone that is not a biology major (with minimal foundational bio knowledge). No study guide or anything helpful materials. Tests are way harder than lecture material.
Relatively easy class. Tests were pretty easy if you watched the lectures and lectures were straightforward and engaging.
The lectures and notes are disorganized. The exams are much difficult than lecture quizzes. The lectures don't cover all the exam contents. There is no rubric for exams after grading.
The lectures are easy to watch and her note template is ok. Make sure to do both the notes and the learning objectives for the exams. Material is not difficult to understand, but lectures take time to watch.
She explained everything clearly, and the tests were representative of what we learned. Some questions were tricky, but it's to be expected. You can drop the lowest test which is nice, and I honestly spent very little time on this class and got the A.
easy a if you put in effort
Her lecture is just reading the lecture slide. And the lecture slide is not well-organized. If you take this course remote, you will just be watching a lecture recording. Her exam is also frustrating. Require lots of memorization and very little detail. Closed notes, discussion mandatory. Before taking this class I still love biology, now I don't.
I had her years ago for bild 3 then again for ecology lab and she is my favorite professor, very well organized and seems to really want to make her students succeed. She's not an "easy" professor but as long as you stay on top of your (very reasonable) workload you'll be good.
WARNING FOR STUDENTS ATTENDING SUMMER SESSION This professor originally posted a syllabus showing there are 320 points for the total grades. However, she suddenly changed one discussion into extra credit and dropped the total points to 315 with no announcement. I have 92% at that time. After changing, I immediately dropped to 90%. Be careful guys!
Pretty straightforward professor. Not the most accessible professor I've had, but there is definitely worse. My only criticism is that she seemed like she dislikes her students or is mad at them or something; otherwise, very clear on what is expected and how to succeed.
Dr. Butler is a good prof to have and the overall course is not too difficult. The 2nd and 3rd portions of the quarter were very memorization heavy, but she does drop the lowest of her 4 exams. Overall not a bad course if you put some time into it and she prerecords and uploads lectures which are super helpful. Sometimes a lot of info to remember.
The reason I'm giving her a 4.0 is because she sometimes struggles to get the point across. She's so conventional in her ways and won't change what's established. Her final exam was way easier than the rest so that's a plus.
Dr. Butler is passionate about teaching but sometimes struggles to explain concepts clearly. Thankfully, the concepts are not very challenging and if you attend lectures and discussion, you will do well. However, exams are on Canvas, one question at a time without being able to change answers which is an unnatural testing modality in my opinion.
I took this class my first semester as a human bio major. it was the easiest of all my classes but also SO boring. she talks so slow/would never finish her lecture in class and you'd have to watch the rest online. you have to be there for clicker points. i am no longer a bio major. if you can get someone else do that.
There's a lot of content covered during lecture and on exams but the exams aren't cumulative. You can't see your grade on canvas and have to calculate it on your own based on the grading process in the syllabus which is confusing. Also attendance isn't required but there's iclicker questions every class that's a part of your participation grade.
She doesn't always necessarily finish all her lectures and assigns lecture videos to watch instead. Her lectures consisted of her reading off slides and questions for clicker points. I appreciated her exams being noncumulative, but her exams tend to be more on the difficult side. She doesn't leave any rubric for any of the exams.
Professor Butler had good lectures but the class moved quickly and there was a lot of information covered on each exam. The exams aren't cumulative so that reduced the study/workload of the class, but the exams do get progressively harder. Lecture participation is mandatory (clicker points). Overall a less stressful class compared to others.
Took her for summer session and from watching her lectures, it seems like she has no idea what she is talking about. She frequently stumbles over her words and has to correct herself a lot, making her lectures a bit hard to follow. Im not talking about one or two lectures. She does this in almost all her lectures.
Don't be fooled by the extra credit. You will only get extra credit if you happen to NOT do discussion assignments or attend. She wrote this down wrong on the syllabus. Told us in the final week. Lectures are elementary school compared to the exams. Not a clear teacher by any means. Avoid.
Despite getting an A (that was really only because I learned on my own) I would not ever take a class with her again. Lectures are scattered, make little sense, completely disorganized. Testing structure is unnatural with one question at a time. You can't view your tests after the fact even if you go to office hours to learn from your mistakes.
UCSD Bio department needs to audit her class especially her lecture material and teaching. I learned more from my IA than I ever did in any lecture she recorded. Her exams are significantly more in depth then she covers during any lecture so definitely recommend reading the textbook even though it's not required. She seems nice enough though.
It is always the BIEB classes that want to feel important. Her lectures are boring, the material is not hard to grasp but makes her exams incredibly difficult for no reason. Exams are done through canvas but you only get to answer one question at a time and you can't go back to review them. Her "lecture checks" are useless too.
She is a very bad teacher who only reads the contents of the slides and does not explain properly. She needs iclickers in her class for which you have to pay extra and you also have to pay extra for the textbook. I would never take her again
She can't explain herself so she uses a lot of online resources like mandatory youtube videos that she assigns to watch. But at the same time attendance is mandatory, which means you have to sit there the whole time being confused and spend a lot of time back home trying to figure out what the lectures were about.
Class is test heavy, but exam material is not covered in lectures/ lecture slides. She doesn't always finish slides in class and assigns them to watch on your own time, as well as whole lectures that she never talks about in class. Not very accessible outside of class. Uses iClickers, discussions are mandatory. Avoid if you can.
I really liked this class. She doesn't always explain things clearly, but there is online lectures to use as review if you miss something. We had to adapt the class structure because there weren't enough TAs for discussions, but it was manageable. Exams reflected the lectures and lecture checks. Whenever I spoke to her she was helpful and friendly.
I loved BIEB 102 with Butler. Her exams were online and exactly like the lecture material. Assignments consist of clicker questions and post lecture checks that have multiple attempts
This professor covers a lot of material at once for each midterm, and sometimes it can be confusing because she tends to rush through lectures. Lectures are slide based and an iClicker is required which does require money. Her examples can be helpful but she mostly just reads off the slides.
Lectures are slow paced and boring with mandatory attendance. Online non cumulative midterm exams that are pretty easy if you take good notes.
Class structure was affected by not having IAs with discussion sections during this quarter. Weekly lecture checks are due twice a week. IClicker points are given during class for participation credit. Exams are taken online through Canvas, but you are only able to do one question at a time and you are not able to go back to revisit old questions.
This class used I-clickers making attendance mandatory, although there was lots of flexibility. There are lecture checks after each lecture and lots of lectures you must watch on your own. Her slides are hard to follow when looking back and lectures are very boring. Discussions are mandatory. there are 4 exams all of which were online.
Due to a lack of TAs, discussion sections took place during lecture and we had some lectures to watch on our own but there are no homework assignments. The lecture checks, discussion problem, and participation points were great grade boosters and were very easy. The tests were online, fair, and she gives many example problems during lecture.
zero accomadations, iclickers, not accessible, boring lectures, mandatory discussion. Take with anyone else.
Chill teacher. iClicker needed, but only need 70% of points so there's flexibility. Online exams which cover lots of material but overall not too hard. Mandatory discussion - cannot switch into another. Have to watch separate lectures outside of class which is annoying but they can be short. Overall easy class but you learn a lot.
Professor rushed through as much content as she could during class without actually going into depth of concepts to make sure students understood. Her only method of teaching was reading off of confusing slides. Her tests were different from the lectures and homework. You have to teach yourself in order to pass. Pick another professor if you can.
Lectures were often rushed, topics that were tested DEEPLY on during the exams were not covered thoroughly during lecture and I always felt underprepared going into an exam. Questions on exams were very confusing in the way they were written and sometimes would be way to broad compared to the simple things talked about in lecture.
I would never take this class again with her. Exams are really hard and not related to her lectures. Attendance is mandatory and will get points by i-clickers. She does not explain the lecture very well and it is so confusing since it all pictures.
This class was fairly easy, but some of the lectures were hard to understand. In some of her online lectures, she would randomly pause and restate the topic. Expect to have a good amount of work outside of class.
Online exams, which are so hard and unfair. Easy hw and discussion but you can never do well on the exams cause they are so different from her lectures!!!!!!
Don't understand all the hate. Lectures were confusing, but exams really were not that hard. If you watch the lectures and take fine notes, you'll get an A. Discussions were hit or miss but overall not too bad. iClicker required.
Online exams are challenging with many questions that barely align with the lecture material. Overall, it's a chill class, but definitely not an easy A. I do not recommend her class at all. Unless your fine with a B/B+.
All exams including the final were online. She gives extra credit throughout the year. Attendance is mandatory and iClickers are used. But honestly easy A if you go to lecture. You have to be really lazy to not do well in this class.
Super easy class if you just go to lecture. Online exams aligned with lecture. Honestly if you did bad in the class that's a skill issue because she had so much extra credit and dropped a lot of stuff. Deserves more high ratings.
I really liked BILD3 with Dr. Butler. Lectures had iclickers, but were interesting and engaging. She clearly has a love for biology and she cares that you do well. There are a lot of opportunities for office hours and a few for extra credit. I really liked her online quizzes, which were challenging but not too hard if you take notes and study.
Her class was OK. I just did not like the professor tbh. She seems to have attitude. I think she puts on a nice persona in class but definitely talks bad about you Lol. She is eager to help but she doesn't really get involved much honestly. The TA's do most of the helping and gradings ngl
Professor Butler is heavy on group activity so make sure to pick your group members wisely. The professor not only exposes us to R coding with is beneficial to students in ESYS majors, but also makes sure that each individual student understands how to do it properly. The TA's were also extremely helpful and patient with students.
She requires iClicker, had 4 tests with the lowest dropped, as for the tests I would normally score around and 80 or 70, but I feel like even though I studied for weeks the lecture aren't well represented on the tests rather the videos (from) she posts, so for studying watch the videos they go more in detail about the topics on the tests.
She requires an iClicker for attendance and it is mandatory for a grade. Talks really fast and goes through content quickly. Aside from in-person lecture, she assigns videos to watch for homework (15-50 minutes long). Definitely note heavy.
Class is very easy & you'll have no homework or assignments outside of class. Also does not require a car as every place is accessible with public transit. Class was great but professor lowkey gives passive aggressive. but def take the class probably easiest upper div bio lab out there
Her upper division bio lab is super easy, but honesly it's because she doens't really care about the students. Her TA's do literally everything, and she's pretty unaccessible bc of her research. I guess she's an easy A? Just doesn't really care about students.
