Nice and helpful
I had him for both structures 1 & 2. He is really nice and very helpful. He is always willing to help you if you have a question on the homework or for a test. overall, Great teacher!!! Get him if you can!!
Pretty good teacher. If you do your work and go to class you should get a pretty good grade. The homework was a little excessive, but I think he was going to change that. Overall, not a bad teacher, but who gave him a chili pepper?!
I had him for Math Structures 2 and I feel like he made it way harder than it needed to be. The class was set up for working in groups and doing activities which wasn't very helpful most of the time. His tests were super hard; nothing like homework, changed up too much to be like the homework/class. I wouldn't recommend him
I had him for Structures 1 and 2 and he's a great professor. Sometimes assignments are a little unclear and tough, but he's more than willing to help you out. You have to go to class and doing homework is a must. If you attend class, do the homework, and do okay on the tests then you should have no problem. I highly recommend Dr. Dingman.
He grades for accuracy so if you aren't into making sure your measurements are exact right down to the millimeter than take someone else because he will take points off. He makes this class so much harder than it needs to be.He makes you write a paper on area formulas so if writing papers in math isn't your thing look for a different teacher
LOVED his class. I hate math, but he made it so much easier for me. From the most part, people in my class complaining about him were the ones who did not participate/put in full effort. Another teacher was a sub for us, and it made me realize Dr. Dingman really is the best. DEFINITELY get him if you can.
This was his first semester teaching the class and he was amazing! His tests are super easy. If you go to class and listen(which isnt hard), it will be a breeze. But study hard for the midterm and final bc they are made by another teacher and they are TRICKY! That is how I got a borderline high B.
He teaches you great, real world mathematics that everyone should use. It's a very easy class and he's extremely helpful if you don't understand something.
Dr. Dingman is NOT an easy professor. If you're taking Math Reasoning as a blow off class don't take this professor. The tests and quizzes are pretty difficult especially if math isn't your strong suit! DO NEWS OF THE DAYS! In the end it will save your grade. I like Dr. Dingman but I would not recommend this class to non-math students.
I took him for Cal1, I can't recommend this class if you have never taken it before. Quizzes & drill problems are extremely different and more difficult than the homework. Tests are a combination of both. He teaches the material well, but is extremely picky on grading and will mark correct answers wrong over anything minor with no partial credit.
He is a great teacher, unfortunately he may explain a little too much to the point of confusion. He uses a powerpoint at all times which can sometimes be weird as you do not see him actually work it out it is just already on the screen.
I had Dingman for Calculus II, and it was a really difficult class, but he was a very nice teacher. He explained concepts clearly and gave us lots of time in class to work example problems. Just remember to do all of the homework and ace all of the quizzes because the tests are really hard.
Professor Dingman made things easy to understand and because is head of the department so he made all of the tests. If you take him though be prepared to do all the paper hw not just the required so you can make a good grade. His tests are similar to the quizzes and his quizzes are similar to paper hw. Hard class but if you study you will be fine.
Good Teacher! Very clear and organized way of teaching. However his test are very difficult and it requires a lot of dedication and effort to past.
Absolutely amazing at actually teaching. He knows your questions and places you'll mess up before you do, and he warns you ahead of time. Pretty middle of the road as far as difficulty. Highly recommend if you need explanation when working out problems step-by-step.
This class is very hard, but Dr. Dingman is definitely the best professor for it. The tests are extremely hard, and you really need to study and do practice problems for them. Most other Cal 1 classes are taught by people with not-so-good English, so it's worth taking the class just for that. VERY nice guy, go to his office hours for help.
I took Dr. Dingman's cal I class after failing another professor's cal I class the previous year. I wish I had taken Dr. Dingman's class the first time! He is an excellent professor and presents new, complicated material in a very clear, easy to understand manner. He is very understanding and wants to help students succeed. Best math professor.
Great professor! He presents the material in a very fresh and new way every day. You can tell he cares for his students and their success. Go to class and click in. The tests are a little difficult, but a couple hours studying should be enough. He is willing to help and easy going. I took Calculus in high school and this class is easier than HS.
Dr. Dingman is a light in the usually dark math department at the University of Arkansas. His lectures are good and if you pay attention you won't have trouble getting the grade you want.
Dr. Dingman is a great professor who gives the information in a clear and concise manner. However, He is the most difficult of the three professors hands down. His tests are much more difficult and he doesn't drop your lowest test unlike the other two professors. Only take him if you had AP cal in high school.
VERY DIFFICULT TESTS.
Prof. DIngman is extremely nice. He is always in a good mood and is happy and excited for class. He teaches in a very specific way that can be hard for some students if they don't learn in that particular way, but he is available for office hours and will happily help you out. His test are pretty hard and he grades very strict on them.
Dr. Dingman was a great professor i had for Cal 1 and did a great job explaining the material. He does give hard tests to the students and you do need to attend class to be prepared for him. Overall great guy and great teacher though!
His lecture is comparable to someone explaining how to make a PB&J sandwich for 50 minutes when you just want them to shut up get to the point. He doesn't do many problems on the board either. He's a really nice guy, but if it weren't for the clicker points & attendance- nobody would attend his class. I learned more in Drill than his lecture.
Dr. Dingman is the best math professor on campus. He is clear, helpful, and most importantly he actually teaches the content. His tests are the hardest of all the Calculus 1 professors, but it makes the departmental midterm and final easier for you. Take Dingman if you want to somewhat enjoy your math experience.
Dr. Dingman was one of my favorite professors during the semester that I took his class. He made Cal 1 easy to understand and was always available outside of class. His tests were straightforward and had no surprises. The textbook was not mandatory, but it was useful for extra practice. However, the online homework tool was essential to your grade.
Dr. Dingman is a really good guy. There are SO many quizzes in this class which gets kind of annoying, but if you understand the material its easy to get a good grade. I took calc in high school and that helped a lot. There is one homework assignment a week that takes some time but its manageable. I would definitely take Dingman again!
taking him again for Cal 2 bc he is a great professor
Having a hard time with math? Dr. Dingman is the best calculus teacher I've ever had or will have. Very clear explanations of all problems. Easily explains questions from students. Makes calculus II easy. 10/10
This class was tough. However, Dingman really cares about the success of his students, and it shows. He moves quickly through material, but there is a lot to cover. Attending drill helps immensely.
Professor Dingman is hands down the best math professor at the UofA. He will answer any questions you may have, he likes to joke around with the class. Calc II is a difficult course by nature but Dingman will make it much easier. Highly recommend him to anyone taking calculus.
Great teacher, terrible department.
DO THE ONLINE HW. I've never had a better professor. He explains things very thoroughly and actually wants his students to pass his class. If you do struggle with any material, he has office hours and can explain how to do something in about a minute and make complete sense. If you need calc 1. TAKE SHANNON. He's also just a great guy in general.
Professor Dingman cares very much about the success of his students. He makes every effort to make the criteria for the exams and quizzes VERY clear. Pay attention in lecture, do the work, and you'll pass no problem. Even if calculus doesn't come easy to you, you'll be fine.
Dr. Dingman is an amazing calculus professor. He explains all of the topics in great detail and works out lots of examples in class. He is very clear with what his TA's are to go over drill, so it matches well with what you are learning in class. He is always happy to answer questions and does his best to explain the issue to you. Highly recommend.
It was his first semester teaching this course. I ended up dropping because of how hard the class was. It is supposed to be an "easy" math class for non-math majors. He is a nice guy & is very smart but does not understand that we do not get math like he does. He is probably a great professor in the courses he teaches for math majors.
Professor Dingman is a very good calculus professor. He's very open to questions and teaches the concepts very well. There is a LOT of homework though, don't put it off until the last minute. Use the (optional) book homework (Online HW is mandatory) to study for the quizzes and exams!
I had calculus 1 with Dr. Dingman and he is one of the best math professors I have ever had. Clear lectures and slides, helps when I didnt understand something, answers clearly... We had 4 test including the final and he curves the grade. BTW he uses clicker for class quizzes
You absolutely must take Dr. Dingman. For any class. I've heard the math department at the U of A is sub-par, but Dingman stands above the rest. Clearest math lectures I've ever attended. His passion for math is reflected in his teaching, and he genuinely cares about your performance. His Cal 2 class performs higher on average than other professors
Dr. Dingman is excellent. He gives well structured calculus lectures and explains to you exactly what you need to know, ESPECIALLY when test time comes around. He'll let you know how to work out a problem exactly how the grades want you to. I have one nitpick with his class though, there are TONS of drill quizzes. Like a lot. Once per week usually.
Great guy and a great teacher. Always happy and laid back, but he teaches the material in a paced, digestible form. 10/10
Personally, Shannon is one of the best lecturers I've ever had. Obviously you need to attend class to secure an A in this class because Calculus should not be taken lightly, however, Shannon explains things with great detail until you understand it. There are quizzes on some drill days, (hint) so you may want to work book problems before then!!!!
Dr. Dingman is maybe the best math professor I have ever had. His Cal 1 class has been very clear and easy to understand. He show how he really cares about the students and wants everyone to succeed. You will still have to work hard and do lectures, hw, and textbook readings to succeed in the class because it still is Calculus.
This was my 2nd semester with Dr. Dingman, and just like in Cal I he is a very solid choice. However, if you breezed through Cal I, just a fair warning, Cal II is MUCH more difficult. He explains concepts very well though and is very likable. STAY ON TOP OF EVERYTHING THOUGH, if you get behind in Cal II its rough to catch back up.
Dr. Dingman is a great professor. While Cal 2 is a challenging course, he does his best to provide students with all the help they need if they come to him. Quizzes are every week and there is online homework; book homework is optional, but does help on sections where you might be a little lost. Dr. Dingman cares about the success of his students!
I had him for Cal2 over the summer. He was awesome.
I wish there wasn't a character limit so I could rant about how awesome Dingman is, he's responsive and understands a lot about the struggle of being a student, his workload is a bit heavy, but it's important to facilitate growth. The attendance is recommended and it's free points, and the textbook is just extra work if you'd like to do that too
Understands Calculus and makes sure that everyone's questions are answered and even stays after class to help. Very funny and caring a true gem.
I could go on for days about Dingman. An absolutely fantastic guy. His lectures were fun, he cares about his students, and he is an endless sea of knowledge when it comes to calculus. He loves when people ask questions, and helps the whole class understand. Calculus 2 is still a HARD course, but Dr. Dingman made it one of my favorite classes. 10/10
He's very smart and understands what he is teaching but sometimes he goes really fast through the lecture slides and doesn't answer questions. Very easy to get lost especially if you have trouble focussing for an extended period of time. Its nonstop calculus.
Smart guy, awful professor. Department as a whole is absolute garbage. Do yourself a favor and take Cal II elsewhere.
Amazing professor who teaches Calculus 2 incredibly incredibly well. Learning through this class is a great experience. Keep up with the class, make sure to ask when you run into questions. Great class. Definitely recommend!
Dont get me wrong he is a nice guy and thats why he is respected and everyone gives him good ratings. However, as a student we need a good teacher not a friend. He literally reads off a powerpoint with content straight from the textbook. Dingman would go on for 30 minutes about something that wouldnt be on the exam. Overall he is alright.
Great professor. He truly cares about his students and will help If you need anything.
Doesn't let you view the results on the final exam and just gives you a letter grade with no way to challenge it.
Awesome professor! He was taught the course exceptionaly.
Nice guy, terrible professor. He literally copy and pastes his lectures from the textbook, does one example per lesson and its the easiest one so when it comes to exam time, you have a false sense of security. I feel he does not care about his students, rather his paycheck. Do yourself a favor: take Cal II literally anywhere else.
This man might be the best math teacher I've ever had. Good spirited, knows his stuff, and committed to get you over the finish line. Content is trash, but that's just Cal II. Curves are often generous if you know most of the material, but can be frustrating if you do not master it prior to the test. Note: the ungraded book homework is essential.
Cal II sucked but Dingman made it easier and he was very understanding and accommodating. If you have the chance to take him, do!
Professor Dingman is awesome and he cares about his students! He was accommodating when I was sick and couldnt take the exam the day of and is just a genuine person. We do have HW and quizzes every week so be prepared for that. Also attendance in both drill and class are required and it counts towards your grade.
He is such a sweet and genuine person. There is a lot of homework given (but never for a grade so it's basically optional). He makes the information easy to understand. Although for the study reviews for each test and the final are given without answers so you don't even know if you are studying correctly.
I loved professor Dingman. He came to class everyday willing to help everyone. Even though it was a huge class, he made sure everyone was on the same page. It genuinely seems like he cares about his student's and their success. I wish he taught Cal 2 next semester.
Shannon Dingman is the reason I am taking Calc 2. He has inspired me to further the my math career and is always there for his students. He genuinely cares about his students, their wellbeing, and grade, but futhermore he cares about how well they grasp the lessons. Take the flipped classroom for a better understanding and a good time.
Not very clear when explaining things then just gives you an example and expects you to be able to work it out. Tests are very different from quizzes, homework, and class work. Test reviews extremely unclear and don't help when it comes to exams.
Really cool guy. Always was up to answer any questions and answered them well. I ended up switching out of STEM, but he was definitely the best professor I had as an engineer.
Beware this class is flipped which means you won't receive a lecture but instead a short video. Classroom instruction mainly consists of him writing problems on the board with little explanation. I would recommend taking Calculus elsewhere because you will struggle and there is little help when you do.
Dr. Dingman is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. Most math professors go way too fast and don't get their point across, but Dr. Dingman actually knows how to teach in ways that his students will understand.
Attendance is not mandatory but I would recommend going for in-class points. Overall, an excellent teacher who makes it clear he is there to help you succeed if you are struggling. Very easy to access outside of class and answers emails in a reasonable time. It is a tough subject, so don't expect an easy class, but he makes the class a lot better.
He is an amazing teacher that if funny, but also gets the job done. 5 stars.
Professor Dingman is such an engaging lecturer and is very organized. He is approachable. His class is a flipped structure where you watch a video summarizing the concepts before your next class. This is very helpful and you will understand the content much better. These videos are required and there are attendance questions.
Dr. Dingman was amazing! Seriously the way he teaches is by far one of the best I have ever seen. The way he explains calculus is very digestible even for those who have not had calculus before. He seriously does a great job for such a fast paced class. If you are going to take cal 1 take it with him!
He was a great professor and wanted to help people understand the material, but I do not think his teaching method was the best. I learned more from the homework and youtube videos than in class. But overall a great person and an inspiring professor.
Dr. Dingman is the best math teacher I have ever had. I didn't understand calculus in high school at all and was extremely worried about being able to do it in college. Because of Dr. Dingman, I feel confident about my mathematical abilities enough to continue pursuing my engineering degree. Watch the videos and do the practice problems on time.
Professor Dingman had a ton of students, so he was dealing with a lot. I didn't like the style of his class. He changed it to have a mandatory video to watch before the class, but I always forgot to watch it, and he didn't teach during the class. It was basically another drill during the lecture. I passed Cal AB and BC and almost got a B. Overhyped
Dr. Dingman was the best teacher! He cares about his students and we always felt well prepared for exams. The content was difficult, simply because it is a calculus class. He teaches in a way that makes it easy to grasp the content!! 5/5 for sure!!
I was skeptical of the flipped classroom, but it worked well for this class. Lecture videos are easy to follow along with, and Dr. Dingman explains concepts well. Would definitely take again!
Dingman is AMAZING. His lectures are thorough and he posts videos for every class. He uses a flipped classroom learning style which some people don't like but I did. No midterm but you will have 4 exams and a weekly quiz. In class he has you attempt examples first and then he works through them, which REALLY helped me learn and ensure my competency
Dr. dingman is by far the best math professor ive had. With that, there definitely are some cons. (btw His class is flipped) He tests are difficult, and its not that material is difficult, its the problems he chooses for the exams are that are hard. And he goes over the easy examples in class, then lets you figure out the hard ones on the homework.
This is the best math teacher of all time, he cares about his students, always accommodates and will answer all questions. He posts videos over each day's material making studying for exams much easier than it would be. The methods he uses to teach are amazing, you can tell he really knows his stuff and how to get his students to interpret it.
Dr. Dingman is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He explains content very clearly and is great at providing feedback and answering students questions. There are a lot quizzes but he drops a ton at the end of the semester. He's is super fun and relaxed as well.
One of my favorite professors and made calculus one of my favorite classes. He was a great teacher and gave lots of partial credit on exams so it was not difficult to get good grades. The class was very straightforward with a clear schedule and I never had to be stressed about this class with this professor. Wish he would teach calculus 2!
Dr. Dingman had the most engaging lectures of any math professor I've had at U of A. Easygoing guy with a great sense of humor, and explains the material really clearly. He tries to help everybody however he can, or "drag some kids across the finish line." TBH he'd make a great coordinator for Calculus II. Makes me wish he could teach all my maths.
Dr. Dingman was a great professor to take Cal 1 with. He worked through lots of examples in class, making sure to give us opportunities to participate as well. He teaches with a flipped classroom, which was hard to get used to at first, but it really grows on you and now I appreciate that it was taught that way. Wish I could take his class again!
Great professor. Survey of Calc was super easy with him as the teacher. So many grades are dropped at the end too. I personally didn't love the content but he is an amazing teacher and I never had trouble understanding.
He is very nice, and an overall good teacher. My biggest warning is that the final was difficult and when he gave us exam reviews, they don't have answer keys which is not very helpful. Calculus is a lot of work but he's a good teacher.
10/10 would recommend. Dr. Dingman is a wonderful professor and he does want everyone to succeed. Iv'e gone to his office hours and he is very sweet. He has no problem answering questions and making sure that concepts are clear. The exams can be hard, but make sure that you understand all of the concepts and can teach them to others.
Dr. Dingman is a phenomenal Calculus 1 professor. He genuinely cares about his students, and makes it a point to know their names. He is kind and also has a great sense of humor. He knows the material well and is very easily approachable if you have any questions! Overall, he is one of the best professors I have ever taken!
Professor Dingman uses a flipped classroom teaching method, and it was my first time in this kind of setup, but it was very helpful to learning. He was always very clear on what is expected, when things are due, and what will be on exams. He dropped some quizzes and attendance points at the end of the semester. Amazing professor, great class.
KING DING. Took cal 1 and actually enjoyed it just from how engaging his lectures were. He breaks everything down extremely well and makes the tougher concepts understandable. Tests are everything but not bad at all if you go to class.
Professor Dingman is the man. I typically don't enjoy math but calculus was a breeze with him. The flipped classroom makes learning really easy, just make sure you watch the videos. Highly recommend!
I'm not normally one to rate my professor but Dr. Dingman is amazing! I'm not a math person but he made Cal 1 very enjoyable and I expect to have a B (only because I've missed some quizzes). The tests are written open response but gives lots of partial credit. I highly recommend taking him
Took him for calc 1 and all I can say is take him, he makes it easy to understand and as long as you try he will make sure you get the grade you want.
He teaches using the flipped classroom technique ("learn" through videos prior to class and practice during class period). The time management is not the best and many times concepts have gotten delayed due to this. Also, don't try to email. He's not going to respond to them, so you'll have to wait till class or seek him out in office hours.
Great professor. He is willing to talk after class if you need help. Great lectures. Attendance is mandatory, but I enjoyed the class.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Makes math accessible & understandable. Great lecturer, flexible, and super nice. His Blackboard is organized really well, which makes homework, classwork, and studying for tests easy.
This guy rocks. He's good at condensing a lot of information into the short lecture-time and making sure that every second counts. I'm not a huge fan of the flipped classroom, especially later into the semester when watching the videos pre-class is like listening to an adult on peanut's talking since I don't know what in the world is going on.
Shannon is great! I never had trouble coming to class because he's the sweetest and I would say a very good professor. Calc isn't the easiest but he's here to help. Know study guides very well and you should be good on exams! Flipped classroom can be a bit annoying having to watch the videos before class but they're great to rewatch and to study.
Dr. Dingman was a very good professor and tried to make sure his students understood the material during class. Often times he would get side-tracked or we would fall behind in material, but that can happen when there is just so much to cover. He's not great at responding to emails which can be aggravating. Overall, good professor for a hard class.
