There is a quiz almost every week but two are dropped. She is a great lecturer besides her tendency to say "uh". Study names and places in lecture notes, read the primary sources, skim the reading and you should be fine on quizzes. Midterms are pretty hard, lots of writing. I rec. her, just study & take notes!
Speaks FAST in lectures Notes in chronological order while book isnt -made studying difficult and time consuming tests had an ALOT of info on them - review has 50 short answer topics, and 3-4 essay topics. on the test, you write 10 short answers and 1 essay. dont take this class if you dont want to spend 10+ hours studying for tests
"Uh" -- if you take her, you'll hear that A LOT! I dropped her class after making at 47 on my first test. She'll give you a very long review (50 ID's and 3 Essays; 10 IDs on test 1 Essay) ... extremly fast talker ... only piece of advice is drop the class. Recommend her to NO ONE!
She talks very fast and says "uh" alot, combine the two and you're in trouble. For example, 175 "uh"s in 20 minutes of class. That's freaking insane. I sit in the front row first seat and dont learn much. Notes are soewhat helpful but tests are very hard and there is a lot of writing. Study as hard as you can, think you did okay, then get a 60.
Duffy is ridiculous. She says "uh" so many times you want to shoot her. There were some boys in our class that cheated and NOTHING was done about it. If you like to cheat, she is the prof for you! The blonde TA is pretty hot, but extremely snobby.
boring, fast-paced lectures. 10 question quizzes over 30-100 textbook pages weekly. Incredible amount of info on tests. do not take if you care about your gpa.
The class was not that bad. There was a quiz almost every week. If you read the text you could get an A on the quiz but if you just want to pass all you have to do is review the notes. The tests are difficult and essay style. If you do not procrastinate and can analyze the material you will do okay. All history is hard at Texas State.
Thought she was a nice, good teacher. Show up everyday and do the reading before class, you will get an A. Very easy going and good instructor.
A newer prof at Texas State. Print out her lectures before class to take notes on; she goes really fast. Skim the readings, pay attention to key people and their achievements. For the tests, know the short IDs thoroughly and use them in the essays. You should do all right then. If you have a hard time studying on your own, go to SI sessions.
One of the newer Texas State teachers. For a history class, hers is easier than most... if you can stand her. She says "uh" so much i want to kick her in the ovaries. 3 Tests, weekly quizes and a 5 page essay.
THIS IS A PRETTY EASY CLASS IF YOU PAY ATTENTION DURING CLASS. THERE ARE WEEKLY QUIZZES, THAT I PERSONALLY WOULDN'T STUDY FOR, BUT SINCE I PAID ATTENTION THE PREVIOUS LECTURE I GOT A ON ALL THE QUIZZES. THE TESTS ARE 50% SHORT ID AND 50% ESSAY. THE SHORT IDS ARE ONLY 3 OR 5 SENTENCES ANSWERING LIKE THE WHO,WHAT WHERE KINDA THING.
I LOVE Duffy. This is my second semester with her. She doesn't go to fast, and her lectures are thorough and interesting. Just study for the tests, skim readings before quizzes and it's an easy A. Don't listen to these other poonanies that think she's too hard... we're in ****ing college get over it... sometimes you have to study and read.
I took the online version of this class. All assignments, quizzes, and tests are taken online. If you are willing to read the material and put forth a little bit of effort, it's an easy A.
She is a kool lady. Her weekly quzzes are easy and her lectures are all ppt that can be printed out. The test format consist of short i.d's and essay, but just go to the S.I sessions before the test and you will be fine.
Great class, over the net. Weekly reading assignment, two page writing dropped on tracs. Excellent course, good reading material. Interesting information. Work at your own pace. You do need to do the reading and writing, or you fail.
I hated this lady at 1st, but she's not that bad. The SI sessions didn't help, but my grader was extremely helpful! He's probably the reason I got an A. Just pay attention, take notes & go to class & you should be fine.
I'm not a history person, but I find myself looking forward to her class. She's fun. Doesn't use the book- so don't buy it. USE THE SI's. History at TxSt is hard, go to the SI sessions. This class has plenty of them.
Most of her vocabulary she uses in her lecturs consists of "Uh" or "Uh but uh". Very hard to follow along if you get easily distracted by "uh"'s.
The "uh's" really aren't as bad as everyone says. Explains things clearly, makes history interesting. Go to class, take notes, do review, & you will get an A. Very nice & funny prof. Took her for both 1310 & 20, got an A. Never used textbook, attendance not required, easy online quizzes can be taken as many times until deadline. Easy A! Taker her!!
I didn't take her for 1310 or 1320 but her class is easy if you go. She puts her powerpoints on TRACS at the beginning of the semester, answers emails quick, and her writing assignments are easy.
She talks VERY fast and definately says "umm" a lot. Her lectures seemed to stray a lot from the textbook so it it almost mandatory to read the textbook in order to understand what is going on and make a good grade. The grader I had was a very hard grader but if you are unhappy with your grade you can take it to her and she regrades it.
very enjoyable and interesting. i highly recommend.
I personally could not stand prof duffy. I just found her really irritating and difficult to pay attention to! Her lectures definitely stray A LOT from the text book and it can be difficult to determine what's important or not. I did a lot of outside work and managed an A, not a particularly hard class if you can stand duffy.
I loved Professor Duffy. Her midterm is evil and she assigns several books rather than a textbook, but if you keep up with the reading and participate in the discussion you will do fine! Yes she says "uh" a lot, but so what? She's very helpful answering questions and emails. It's obvious she loves her work.
Good teacher, really knows American Revolutionary era. Does not simply teach military history, she gets into politics, economics, and many other aspects of history. Just show up everyday and do the reading and writing assignments and it is an easy A.
Took her for 1310 and 1320. Her tests require a ton of writing, but she has weekly quizzes that you can redo until you pass, so It's not impossible to pass her course. Just take great notes, go to the SI sessions, and read the book.
Don't take her. She sucks.
Her tests are very easy. As long as you know something about the terms, you'll do fine. She talks really fast, but other than that, there are no complaints.
Difficult class, was more confused after lecture... did better on exams through self-study. She talks WAY too fast and her TA's are instructed to grade hard. Roll of the dice on TA's unfortunately. I would not recommend Duffy if you want an "easy A" This class is alot of work.
Worst teacher I have ever had, she can not keep from saying um and it gets very distracting. Ive clocked her at 6 a min. She even completely made a fool of a guy in class because he got up to leave to use the phone, like she has any real authority in that situation, i would have said f u and left. she doesnt even grade the tests, leavesit to her ia
Please, I took HIST 4365, and I promise you, I'm NOT the only one who didn't like her or that class. There were a handful of favorites in that class, and I'm assuming they wrote these reviews. That class is hard, but it's not what makes me hate it. You'll read a lot, her "ums" are distracting, and she's annoying. Find another option.
Duffy is very insecure as a professor. She uses "Uh" and "Um" for every other word. For someone who has a Ph.D she does not know how to teach. She lectures far too fast, but it doesn't matter if you can keep up because her IA's [ graduate students] grade your papers. History is hard enough when you don't add an incompetent professor. AVOID HER.
Did not like teacher. Super crazy about leaving during class or being late. Tests were easy but then after getting grade back, was very tedious about grading. Dont take!
She's terrible at communication. She talks way to fast and she informed the class that she is OCD. If you have to go to the bathroom she will most likely tell you not to return to lecture for that day. I thought this was college.
She's a bad teacher with poor communication skills. She does not instruct well enough to give the type of essay exams that are required. Her TA's grade everything and are obviously told to nit-pick. If you love history as I do, find a good professor that will make it interesting. I would NOT recommend.
Seems organized but is not clear about the subjects! Her tests are extremely hard. She gives you like 50 topics and 3 essay questions to study then on the test there are 10 listed and must write about 5! I believe its crazy to memorize all of it
IF your an extreme slacker do not take her class! you actually have to study for tests but the review gives u like 50 topics she may ask you and 10 topics will show up on the test and you have to choose 5 to talk about. Lectures are super boring but she tends to know her stuff. managed a B with lots of studying and reading the book
One of my favorite classes. I think shes a great teacher, she speaks alittle fast but she gives you all the information that you need. Quizes every week and the tests are all writing. They grade heavy on grammar. If your a good student and go to class you will pass.
She was a great professor. She got so excited about history it was inspiring. There were papers due every week that went along with the reading, but they helped with the final.
I took the senior seminar with Dr. Duffy. Her lectures were interesting, and she was very flexible with the subject topic. She was always happy to answer questions and help with assignments. She does talk fast, but I didn't mind. I didn't notice any excessive 'umming.' I would take another class from her in a heartbeat.
Her class isn't easy, you will have to study and there is a lot of information covered, but you can get a good grade. Tests have a simple set up, there are 50 short ID's many of them are interrelated. You can take her quizzes over and get 100's. She talks fast so so don't miss class. Gives extra credit for missing less than 2-3 classes.
She's super sweet! Lectures are painfully boring but if you go and take notes you'll do fine in the class. The tests consist of short IDs and an essay. They're not hard you just have to do the study guide. I have her at 8am and I'm doing well in the class! I would take her over most of the history profs I've heard about.
GO. RUN. GET AS FAR AWAY AS YOU CAN!!! This class is hopeless ESPECIALLY at Texas State.. If there's one thing I recommend, it's taking your history classes online somewhere else. Duffy talks extremely fast & just rambles on and on during lectures...
She's very knowledgeable & straight forward with what she expects. However, her class is super hard to stay engaged in as she talks very fast & often just about little tidbits.. nonstop for the full time. I made a 78 on the first test w/o studying & high B's on the ones I studied for. The class isn't that hard, just read the book & go to class.
She rambles and talks way too fast. I had this last semester for an 8am class and it was torture. She takes role every class and is often very rushed. My grade was an 89 at the end of the semester and she literally said "sorry there's nothing I can do..."
She is really fast paced and it can be hard to keep up. she does post all over her power points but you need to read the before class, along with the book. Her tests cover a lot of material, and you need specifics on all of them. online quizzes are weekly but can be taken multiple times. you really need to be motivated especially if its your 8am
She's helpful and teaches fast. I liked her allot just wish I did better in the class.
Dr. Duffy is an acquired taste, I took her for a whole year. YOU HAVE TO GO CLASS. Never cracked open the book. Just listened. She tells history like a story. And her test are 100% written, nice lady, but proceed with caution...
I realize that most professors are liberal, which usually doesn't matter, but she makes insulting and untrue comments about conservatives, which is uncalled for. Also, the book she uses to supplement the textbook has glaring factual errors. If learning facts rather than opinions is important to you, DO NOT take this professor.
She has an excellent grader (Ed). Her lectures are fascinating but she does talk extremely fast. If you're a slow learner, DO NOT take her. I love her style of teaching, but beware she does not stop for anyone. Attendance isn't mandatory but it'll affect your grade. I don't love history but I loved her class. It's not easy, so you have to work hard
The tests are all writing, comprised of 5 short IDs out of 50 you need to know and you write one essay out of 30 - on each test. Short IDs are basically who, when, where & significance in a paragraph. DO NOT TAKE HER. The power points are online but she doesn't really stay on topic in class. Take the weekly quizzes!!
The test are very tough. No multiple choice, they are all essays. Including the final there are 3 test, so you better do good on all of them. Each week there is a quiz online, which is an easy, but also easy to forget about.
Duffy talks really fast and is hard to understand. She buzzes through material and often strays from what she is talking about. This class has two major tests and they are both essay and short ID based. THIS SUCKS. It's a good class in all, but the IA's are taught to grade really hard and there is really no negotiation.
Great teacher. Not easy. Don't expect an easy A. You'll have to work for it. She has passion, and kept everyone interested. If you hate history, don't take her. If you're lazy, don't take her. Ed rocks. Go to SI sessions.
Duffy speaks very fast. She does mean well though. She frequently told my class that if she was speaking too fast, or if someone didn't understand, then to please raise your hand and let her know. She's very passionate about history, no doubt about that! The tests are VERY difficult. There are short essays, and one normal essay. MAKE SURE TO STUDY!
She talks way to fast for you to understand what she is saying. If you use your phone in class or leave early she will not hesitate to call you out. Her TA is the one doing the grading and grades the tests very hard. It is very important that you do the quizzes on line every week if you want to do well in that class.
She was awesome at making lectures fun if you enjoy learning. There was a lot about American History that I was unaware of, and she brought a lot of things to light. She's very knowledgeable and can answer almost any question you have. Tests are all written, but if you study you'll be fine.
Dr. Duffy is passionate and approachable. She's a bit of a dork, which I really enjoyed. She loves 18-19th century America so that is her focus. She respects her students and their opinions. Be prepared to read and speak up in class.
Dr. Duffy is obviously very passionate and insightful in all of her lectures. She does talk very fast, but she is aware of that so she uploads all of her lecture power points to tracs. The class is writing intensive and it requires a lot of studying, but if you do the studying you will be fine.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. She doesn't take off for attendance, but gives extra credit if you don't have any absences. Her tests are all essays and short ID's, but she literally gives reviews before every test with all the ID's and essays.
I am not a big fan of history but Dr. Duffy makes it interesting. Aside from what is typically published in history books, she likes to talk about the personal lives and personalities of people from history. There are only two tests so be sure to study and you will do well in the class. Her weekly quizzes are easy and will help bump up your grade.
Duffy is great! You have weekly online quizzes that you can take an unlimited amount of times. If Ed is the IA you will love him. The class is kind of boring but it's not hard. You definitely have to work for your grade though. The exams are all written but not bad. She gives you the review I believe 2 weeks in advance.
Don't take, she is a nice woman but she talks a lot about extra irrelevant information. I am a deans list student and had to drop this class because the difficulty of the test dropped my grade down, or at least how the test were graded.
Her class is ridiculous. Aside from being obsessed with electronics use, she expects you to remember and regurgitate so much detail and information on your tests that it feels like a lost cause. All of her tests are open ended and writing based but if you don't have the exact detail she wants you lose all the points for that section/question.
Personally, I could not focus in her lectures. She seems very passionate about what she teaches but I do not like the way she lectures. Her IAs grade her tests and they're a little tough.
I reccommend you don't take Duffy for hist1310. Her exams are terribly hard and she expects you to retain more information than even possible. Im a deans list student and this course dropped my gpa because her exams are so hard. Her reviews are 90% not even tested on during the exam. Such a waste of time
Pretty tough class, but I've learned a *lot*. The tests are made up of short answer q's and an essay, so they're pretty hard, but if you put in quality study time, it'll pay off. Talks a bit fast during lectures, but not too bad. Take advantage of the quizzes on TRACS, they are a definite grade booster. Study the powerpoint on TRACS too.
Honestly this class was incredibly hard. They expect you to know the exact date of 75 short answers. Ridiculous. Much hatred.
Essay based tests, only 3 tests, and very hard graders my least favorite class. She is passionate and knows her stuff, but a lot of the stuff she talks about has no relevance to the tests whatsoever. She's interesting to listen to but gives too much information. Pray you get a good grader (our average for test 1 was a 49). Hope you like writing..
Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want to make a good grade you should probably go to class. Her lectures are long, and exams can be tough so make sure you study! The best thing about this class is online quizzes every week that are the easiest thing ever but they all add up to 25% of the grade so that really helps out.
This class was very hard. Test are hard. Study Guide is way too long. She speaks very fast. I would recommend a different teacher for a 1310 class.
She is a terrible teacher. Three tests. Impossibly hard grading. Her "review" is memorizing exact details of 50-100 topics to randomly repeat 5 of them. Hard to understand and tends to wander off topic. Does not help when asking specific details. Tells you to do research for info but grades on what she thinks she said. Her graders suck.
Be ready for a rough one. If you can, avoid taking Duffy, she just spews out information like a bat out of hell during lecture. Definitely a class that gives you a reality check and you have to bust your ass for a good grade. Only thing I learned from this class was the definition of hard work, memorizing up to 100 historical events was pointless.
Duffy talks waaaaay too fast. So fast that it sounds like she's out of breath. Her tests are HARD. Ridiculous amount of information to retain on her reviews. Depending on the grader.. Grading is harsh. They want you to be specific be in full detail and have dates for everything. Expect essays & LOTS of intense studying. A lot of material& work.
Big class so you don't get much one on one time or really have a chance to ask questions. Her graders are tough and the class is long and boring.
NO. JUST NO. expects WAY too much from a 1310 class. avoid at all costs, i don't care what these other reviews say!!!
DO NOT TAKE! reviews include 50 short IDS and 3 essays to memorize &on the test you only have to know 5 & 1 essay. WAY to many to remember "who, what, when, where, why, how". all tests are written and the lectures are super boring. final is even harder. 25 short IDs from 1st test, 25 from 2nd, and 50 new ones with 5 essays. retaking w diff teacher
I liked Dr. Duffy. I took her Honors Capital Crime in Early America class. It was pretty difficult (lots of reading and you had to come to class really prepared to discuss), but I learned a ton. She really knows here stuff. No tests. Graded on daily 1 page writings for completion, active participation in discussion and one big paper at the end.
I enjoyed her class a lot. She is a little scatter brained and sometimes changes the power points however she tells you when she does and tells you ahead of time not to print out her power points well in advance because she usually adds and takes things out. Tests are short ID and essay but if after talking to IA you don't like grade she will grade
This was the class, and the professor, who dropped my GPA my freshman year. I recommend taking history with another teacher or another school. Her graders are incredibly picky. There's 2 tests worth 20% each,a final worth 35%,and weekly online classes worth 20%. The only extra credit is 2 points added to your final grade if you attend class.
I hate history. But Duffy made it interesting. She's a marvelous speaker, and when she lectures it's like she's telling you her favorite story. Her graders are hard, her tests can be hard, but it's worth it. You will never fall asleep. It was rhe most interesting class I took this semester. Hamilton, but for school.
The exams are pretty heavy but is easy you can tell how passionate she is about history in her lectures the IA are extremely picky extra credit questions are on the exams there are weekly quizzes that you can take as much as you want until the deadline she drops 2 of your lowest quiz grades and if you feel your IA graded harshly she will review it
This was the absolute worst class ever, the graders are extremely hard with grading and won't give you any credit even if you make a small mistake. You have to memorize who, what, when, where, and significance of 50 events for one test and are only tested on about half. I have never taken such a hard class and wish someone would of told me before.
no. just no. nice lady, but all of the reviews about the class being hard are so true. no. no. no.
This isn't an easy class by a long shot, but all you have to do is pay attention to her lectures and read the textbook to pass your quizzes and exams. If you work on the exam reviews and actually dedicate some time to them, you'll be fine. Her lectures are interesting - if you like history, it's a really enjoyable class.
Duffy is extremely passionate, but she makes her test (which is the majority of the grade) entirely too difficult. You have to memorize 50 short id's, and 3 essays for review, but only 5 short id's and 1 essay on the test. Terribly hard graders. Terrible class.
Duffy is hilarious. She talks fast but will gladly clarify anything for you if you ask. She doesn't make you feel dumb for asking questions. The only grades are quizzes (1 each week) and 3 in-class essays, so do well on the essays. Her TA is a tough grader.
Talks really fast. She gives test reviews with 50 IDs (short answer prompts) and 10 will be on the test and out of those you pick 5. Then 3 long essay prompts on the review and 2 of them will be on the test and out of those you pick 1. So technically you know exactly what will be on every test you just have to study a bunch of unnecessary stuff.
Duffy truly does care about the class she teaches but... she talks extremely fast, it's more of a random ramble. You can't really tell what is important and not. Test are extremely detailed oriented with a lot of material to study. If you love history maybe she's for you, but for everyone else chose a different teacher!
She definitely knows her stuff and loves history. She gives you a review of 50 terms and picks only 10 at random to be on the test and you only have to do five. So technically you have the test in your hands from the review, and theres only 2 test. Weekly quizzes, but their on tracs and have unlimited attempts, so everybody should be getting 100s.
Other profesors in the university give 15 topics to memorize for the tests she gives 50 topics had to memorize all of the topics because you don't l ow which ines will be on the test. Side tracks so much in her lesson you don't know what to write down in notes. Also her power points aren't much help and has a quiz every week.
dont take her class!!! extremely hard. she loves the subject and loves to teach it, but her TA is an impossible grader! will be extremely hard to pass
Duffy is not a professor I would choose to take again. She does have a passion for history but has also misquoted or given exaggerated informarion in lectures in her heat of passion. She is not approachable and is very stubboen about the grades given and her IAs are tough graders. If you have an option to take another history professor do!
This was honestly the worst class ever. The lectures were really boring and super hard to follow along to but atleast the attendance wasn't mandatory. Also, the tests were extremely hard and she had three assistants that graded them but they were all very inconsistent so I failed each test even after studying a lot beforehand.
grades really hard, and it's honestly just information overload all the time. i wouldn't recommend her to anyone
Very tough grader and very tough grading system. I strongly recommend that nobody takes this course. It seems like the IAs are already willed by her to be tough graders, but then she takes the tests and marks more points down significantly. If you do take this course, study well in advance for each test.
She gives you an unnecessary amount of work to do for the tests out of all the other History professors. This class is writing intensive so theres no multiple choice, you have to write who, what, when, where, and why about one event but she expects you to know 50 events but there only 10 to choose from on the test, and you pick 5 to write about.
Seriously do not take this class. Out of all of the classes I have ever taken hers has been the worst. Lectures are super randomized and a ridiculous amount of information is required to be memorized for the final, it might as well be cumulative. If you don't plan on being a history major stay far away from this professor and class.
This is BY FAR the most difficult class I've ever taken at Texas State. History over at Texas State in general is horrible, all tests are essay based. However, Duffy's tests are much worst than other professors. Regular tests 50 ids, 3 essay topics and only 10 ids and 1 essay topic on the test. Her final is double everything I just mentioned. DNT
My money and GPA has been robbed. I'm a junior and it is sad when the hardest class you've taken by far is a freshman history class.. TA's graded exams way too tough. Believe me when I say avoid this professor. Even if it's the very last class you need to graduate, wait another semester. TA's set you up for failure and should not be TA's.
I showed my exam to another history professor, which i will not provide a name. He, i quote, said "I believe this exam deserved at least a 85 minimum. Who are your TA's? They shouldn't be TA's." I got a 52 on that exam. Needless to say, it doesn't how smart you are. These ta's don't know how to grade. That should say enough
I would not recommend her for a HIST1310, or any other class. Lecture was all over the place EVERY class due to her excessive talking and skipping everywhere over the notes. Teaching Assistants graded tough, like super tough which makes it nearly impossible to pass the class. Avoid at all cost to protect GPA, and save money!
duffy is a hard professor and dont take this class!! I am a freshman and currently took this because I needed to get basics out of the way. with her its not a basic! grades tough and barely passed. theres 3 tests including the final and a bunch of online quizzes. the only good thing is she drops 2 lowest grades at the end. DONT TAKE HER
All writing intensive but if you study the detailed review she gives you should be fine. She also gives weekly online quizzes that have unlimited attempts and if you do those thats an easy 20% of your grade. You dont really have to attend lectures but if you do you get 2 bonus points on your final average.
The class is possible to pass but it takes hard work. You have to study the study guide and write outlines to be able to be truly successful on the exams. There is only 3 exams the whole semester and they are all writing intensive. Also, there is weekly quizzes that cushion out your grade
Duffy is a passionate professor but her lectures get sidetracked and are all over the place. A LOT of notes to take each class and a quiz every week. The TAs are such tough graders, i could never get anything higher than a 50 on my tests. Try to avoid this class and take it back at a community college!!!
I'm a junior with a 4.0; HARD class. There are only two exams and a final. The final is 35% of your grade! The tests are all essay-based. I never paid attention in lecture because she gives study guides that basically tell you what will be on the exam, but you have to memorize an insane amount of info. I made an A, everyone else failed tho
Very hard if you do not have a heavy background in history already. Must memorize 50+ short ID's for each test. Must know "who, what, where, when, why" for each ID. Writing Intensive. I do not recommend this class if you struggle with history.
Terrible. She talks way too much and too fast, I had a very hard time following along. I would often zone out and/or doze off. Very unclear organization to what she's "teaching". It's like she's just talking about history because she likes it, rather than to teach students. Tests are ridiculously hard; very writing intensive. Need to read book lots
The class is ridiculous. I was taking calculus and I had to study for this general class more than any class I've taken. Avoid at all costs. Wants you to know every detail about 50 terms. Unrealistic.
The homework/quizes are easy 100s but the test are freakin hard! I really studied and still failed. The first test avg. was a 46 no joke. You have to really know your history before you even go into this class. Lectures are really boring and she talks super fast. Reviews are the test but with the exception that only 5 out of 50 ids are on the test.
As someone who doesn't study too much, this class will be difficult for you. There's only 2 exams and then the final. I got a 77 on the first test and a 66 on the second. Quiz grades really can help boost your grade up but you need to put effort and pay attention in class. She tends to speak fast and jump topics frequently so be weary.
There are three tests including a final. Weekly online quizzes that you can take as many times until you get a 100 which saved my grade!!!! The test consist of 50 bold terms (the final is 100) you memorize every single one- she picks 10 to put on test- you choose five to write a who/what/when/where/importance of the events
She's really into her subject but she talks super fast. It's hard to keep up with the lecture. 2 tests 20% each and the final is 35%, rest is easy quizzes. Tests are essay based and there is a lot of content to memorize, must know details!! TA'S are harsh graders. Start studying right when the study guide drops. Will focus on this class most.
i failed this class. Her lectures were awfully boring and difficult to follow. lots of writing. lecture hardly corresponds to exam.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! You only have two exams which consist completely of short answers and NO multiple choice at all. Her lectures are extremely boring and really do not help with the exams at all but attendance is still encouraged in order to get bonus points for your overall average (which you will need) Hardest class I have ever taken.
This class is pretty simple so I made it out with a B but Duffy does not make it easy! Gives 50 short IDs and puts 10 on the test when my new history professor only gives us 20. She is incredibly rude and it's easy to tell she hates her job. Don't take her class.
Just don't. Way too difficult for a core class. Her tests were insane and the TA graded harder than necessary.
I took her last spring and her class was the first class at Texas State that I made an A in. If you study hard right before the exam and you're okay at writing, you should be okay. I'd take her again, she's lecture heavy but almost always let class out early. Show up, take good notes, and study, and you'll do fine.
Overall she's a great professor, the subject itself is just really difficult and you are graded very heavily.
Rarely in for office hours, gives a solid 1+ hour lecture of nonstop talking. Tests are brutal, and I'm a huge US history buff. Put in 1 hour a day for study and practice the test reviews daily for the 2 weeks leading up to the test and you should be fine.
The only reason I wouldn't take her again is the difficult tests. She does seem enthusiastic about the material and was very nice about answering questions during lectures. I don't think it's impossible to make an A in this class, but you'd really have to work hard. The tests are fully hand-written and I usually wrote up to 3 pages front and back.
Just show up to class and take very good notes. Study way ahead of time because she gives a study guide weeks in advance. You can take the weekly quizzes over and over until you reach a 100. She does talk a bit fast but she's very passionate and that's what makes her lectures so interesting. She's a bit dorky but I love it!
Very nice lady, quite funny, and very knowledgable about American history. But, I think she expects people to be as involved in history as she is. Her tests are ridiculous and she grades super hard. She will lecture the full class and did not fully cover the information that is on the tests. The cons outweigh the pros in my opinion.
Pay attention. If you dont want to read the book, or get by reading it very little make sure you listen, because she will tell you most of what you need to know.
Super hard tests. All blue book. Not a lot of grades to fluff the test grade.
You don't actually have to read the textbook if you go to the lectures and take good notes. She provides a solid study guide for each test with exactly what material is covered. All the tests are essay or short answer, but if you put in the work studying the tests really aren't bad. Overall very knowledgeable, funny, and entertaining.
honestly one of the toughest professors i've had. yeah, she gives study guides but they are ridiculous. for the final gives you 100 short answer topics to learn AND know the dates. however, only 20/100 will actually be on the test. boring lectures and isn't the best speaker. if you take her, prepare to study every day after class. you'll need it.
She makes history very interesting in my opinion. You definitely need to study before exams and quizzes.
I loved Duffy she was a great prof. Her class was hard but make flashcards and then make a timeline & the test arent hard. Just STUDY! Its a lot but if you just read them like stories it helps. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT ON THE TEST! I made over 100 on 2 tests because of the extra credit. Talk to your IA and ask what they want on the ID and Essays.
Professor Duffy's Tests for 1310 were exhaustive and very specific. She is a good lecturer, but she tests very ineffectively. All memorization, but the volume of information needed to be memorized is quite ridiculous. I got an A but, I would definitely not recommend her to anyone.
Dr. Duffy is my favorite professor. Definitely take her class, you can tell how passionate she is about history. She gives an online quiz every week that you can retake until you get a 100. Lots of the textbook is on the quizzes. Her lectures are really entertaining but make sure to pay attention because you HAVE to study for the tests.
Super boring lectures. There is assigned seating and you get extra credit for 2 or fewer absences. Strictly no phones/laptops allowed and IAs WILL count you absent if you are on it. Easy weekly quizzes. Tests are simple yet super hard. You have to remember a lot of information because its short answer response. STUDY. Otherwise, Professor is nice.
Long boring lecture and an INSANE final. Gives you 100 short answer prompts for the final and makes you write 50 PLUS an essay. Don't take her if you don't like history, folks.
Professor Duffy is very underrated in my opinion. She is a fantastic professor who gives great lectures and truly loves the field she is in. Be prepared though because her class is difficult and requires studying before exams. Attendance is necessary because many terms and prompts are pulled straight from lecture. I highly recommend her!
She gives extra credit every week if you attend the session which is fairly easy. Lectures are super long and weren't interesting to me, but she's very passionate about what she teaches. You get the weekend for the exam, but TAs grade them and don't leave feedback which is annoying. Weekly quizzes are easy with unlimited attempts.
So. Much. Writing. I personally have a hard time writing papers, but the amount of papers was waaaaayyyyy too much. Lectures were long and boring.
Dr. Duffy is an amazing professor!! took her this past semester and loved every second of it. Yes, for exams you have to write essays but if you watched her lectures (which are on the long side but they help ALOT for exams) it's not bad. She knows what she is talking about and doesn't make it boring. I also loved my IA. Also, I never read the book!
Duffy was a wonderful teacher. Offered extra credit every week. Ended up having 9 extra credit points added to my final grade. You have to write two essays for each exams, which is a lot of work and you have to put a lot of effort into it if you want a good grade. If you watch the lectures it makes it easier. Quizzes were easy.
I would not recommend anyone to take this class. I made a 100% in History 1320 and barely managed to make a 70% in this class. My TA rarely responded to my emails. Papers are long and not graded on what is asked in the rubric.
She's very monotone but she clearly cares about history. The lectures are long but she uploads them so you can go at your pace, the weekly quizzes have unlimited attempts and she keeps the highest grade. The exams are each 2 essays and you pick from a selection of prompts. I liked her but I can see why some people might not
Loved the class
Dr. Duffy is a solid professor, she definitely knows her stuff and her lectures aren't boring because she loves what she teaches. Her class is a lot of work though, the exams consist of 2 essays. Her quizzes are easy enough. Definitely do not just listen to lectures, read the book too. It will help you on the exams.
Make sure to do your extra credit assignments, because they will help out at the end of the semester, when your final grade is out.
Her tests make no sense whatsoever. AVOID AT ALL COSTS YOU WILL REGRET IT TRUST ME
The tests make no sense and they are graded extremely hard, would not recommend if you want a good grade.
Do not take her. The tests are two essays and each test so far has taken around 7 hours to finish. Signed up for in person class but Duffy switched it online because she felt like it. Currently going into week 3 since the last test and still dont have my grade back. Each test is 25% of the grade. Weekly quizzes are easy but dont affect grade much.
This class was very hard, she taught the information in depth but it was still so much. Very heavy workload, but extra credit is given, up to 10 extra points to your final grade which is great. But, i would never take the course again, it takes atleast 7-8 hours for exams and the lectures are very long. Great teacher, but it is entirely too much
She loves American History; however, her lectures were incredibly long, and her test takes about 7-8 hours to complete, so say goodbye to your weekend plans because that is what you will be doing all day. She also takes so long to grade tests it takes about a month to get grades back. Be prepared to write long essays and read boring textbooks.
key points: lectures rarely ever have anything to do with the tests. The tests are 2 essays that take about 3-4 hours each with prompts that make no sense. Each in person lecture you go to is 1 extra credit point. quizzes are easy but dont do much for your grade bc each test weighs 25% and theres only 3 including the final. Wouldnt recommend.
I would not recommend if you want a good grade in History, her lectures are very long and her tests are ridiculously hard with 2 essays you have to write with prompts that dont make sense , even if you think your a good writer good luck getting a good grade.
Never met her as the in-person sessions were only for extra credit. Ended up not needing it anyway as I got an A which I didn't expect to be honest. History classes are very writing intensive, and the exams were 2 essays where you got to pick the prompts. I never really did the readings but I also just skated by. Definitely best hist prof I knew of
Expect essays every test and to be miserable! Im a student who gets nineties on papers in College Writing, yet somehow bombs every essay she assigned. Prompts dont make any sense and her lectures are way too long. For your sanity, find a different professor if youre taking this course.
Would not recommend. Boring and not very helpful.
A good teacher to say the least. She has a lecture about history everyday, and it's relatively interesting just because she's so enthusiastic about it. Grades are really easy as long as you do them. She's also very lenient as long as there's a reason.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! I received a 0% on the test and didn't get any feedback on why. The IA sucks and doesn't know what's he's doing. Will have to end up dropping
A lot of reading and supplemental information but if you just read and watch the lectures you’ll be fine. Tests are straightforward and involve the readings from class alongside the lectures. Overall pretty decent class
Lectures posted on canvas, you only go to class for extra credit opportunities. There is no in person lectures. Extra Credit is easy assignments. Lectures are pretty boring, but take notes for your essay. It will help a lot. Essays are pretty hard, and you need to learn the concepts. Graded by the TAs, so some are easy graders and some are hard.
Offers a load of extra credit, but to receive the assignment, you have to attend class just once a week. I would really recommend doing the reading before attending class to participate in the class discussion/weekly quiz.Tests are a little on the heavy side, but again if you keep up with the reading and go to lecture, it shouldn't be as difficult.
Lectures were terrible, hard to sit through cause she can not get a grip on what she wants to talk about. Very sporadic and will call you out for being on your phone or leaving early.
Be prepared to read a lot ! Make sure to read your textbooks & primary reading! By reading you will do amazing on your exam/essays! Going to the group discussions help alot so I encourage you to go. If you pay attention and read everything on time you will do great. I would definitely have her again.
worst testing i have ever had in college. worst professor i have had as well. talks way to much about things that dont even make sense half of this time/ aren't even relevant to what we need to know. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
Lectures are very boring and hard to sit through. Attendance is not mandatory but will affect your overall grade. Say goodbye to your weekend for the 3 exams that consist of two essays each. Weekly quizzes with unlimited attempts will save your grade. Discussion questions can be long and confusing. Overall, if you pay attention its a piece of cake.
Her classes are difficult to understand and the way she tests is really confusing too.
she's not a bad professor by any means. her class can most definitely be challenging if your not doing your work that is. you're going to have to read a lot of primary documents for the tests, and all the dbq's which are bi weekly, and quizzes are weekly. tests are grading by student aides, and can be rough graders, remember to cite evidence.
She was nice but her lectures are very hard to sit through. She will not let you retake or submit work after the due date. Attendance was not mandatory but she would throw in random group assignments that were difficult to understand.
Honestly, don't listen to all the bad reviews for her for 1310. This class is NOT hard, you have infinite quiz attempts and extra credit is provided. The tests aren't graded harshly either. If you have a basic understanding of the material you'll be fine in this class.
This class is a piece of cake as long as you stay on top of your work. Readings are important for understanding and make sure to go over primary documents too as they both appear on test days. Tests are given over the weekend, and you have to write 2 essays. Her lectures can be boring and long but they help if you want an A. Great prof.
Duffy is genuinely not as bad as people say she is. If you do youre work and put in effort you will be fine! Depends on the TA for test scores but Duffy does give extra credit and all tests are weighed the same with quizzes being open note and you can take as many times as you want. Every test is 2 essays and you have the weekend to complete.
Duffy is a really fun professor to take. She is vary passionate with what she teaches and is fun to listen to. while there is a text book for this course, Duffy is good at covering the important points in her lectures. There are extra credit opportunities for people who show in person!
Dr. Duffy is an amazing history teacher. Everything is online, which is great for those with learning disabilities or if you don't go to class. Weekly quizzes are super easy and have unlimited attempts. Tests can be difficult if you have never done essay tests before, but if you use your time wisely, you won't feel rushed.
A little difficult but as long as you put in effort it's an okay class. Definitely can find the reading for free to download online.
I'm currently taking this class, her lectures are unbearable. She has a horrible habit of rambling, then flies through material making note-taking a pain. You have unlimited attempts on quizzes, the tests are lengthy essays with clear instructions and resources provided. 60% of your grade is tests, make sure you spend enough time on them.
Talks way too fast and majority of the time it is about stuff you won't even need to know for the exams. Super extra for a history class. 100% do not recommend.
ngl I only went to 10 classes for the semester, but she rambles for a long time before starting the lecture or she would rambling in the middle of it. The exams are essays and take up your whole weekend even for the final it is an essay, leaving not a lot of time to prepare for other finals. I would not take any future courses from her
Honestly its dependent upon you. If you like a professor who is extremely passionate about what they teach she is for you. She will expect you to read twenty paged blurry primary documents with 18th century language. If you just want the grade choose another professor. She will make you go above and beyond to learn about a simple concept.
She will ramble through lectures and give you unnecessary information. We learned more about disease than anything else and tests will take up your whole weekend. I would NOT recommend this class.
Lectures are tough to sit through, she talks very fast which makes it hard to follow. You will get most of your information from reading the material on your own. Documents are hard to read visually and hard to understand. Exams take up the whole weekend so if you have a weekend job its very impractical.
I adored professor Duffy's lectures, they were somehow hilarious and interesting. However, Instead of standard multiple choice tests, expect 6 long essays that will ruin 3 weekends of your semester. Although I enjoy writing and received good feedback on my tests from her, I had multiple mental breaks every single time! Beware!
Dr. Duffy's lectures are long and she does ramble a bit, but if you like history you'll enjoy her lectures. "Exams" are a lot of work because they're actually several papers that require you to read through lots of primary documents. Overall her class was enjoyable.
Attendance isn't mandatory BUT for the assignments you have to show up to class to get the prompt. I have a thing for history so it was sort of enjoyable for me but maybe not for anyone who doesn't enjoy history. quizzes are easy, she gives unlimited attempts. Exams are kind of difficult but if you dedicate time to them you'll be ok
She knows her stuff and is always open to help. While the writing is on you she gives you all the resources.
Would absolutely not recommend this class. Working part-time and being expected to take exams that will take up the whole weekend is difficult, and the readings are all hard to understand. I never leave ratings, but I had to let others know you will have 0 free time on the weekend, as these exams will take up all of it. Take another professor.
Professor Duffy's Hist 1310 class is easy as long as you do the work. You have a lab every other week and you only need to do four of them ( their really easy). She will send out the test via canvas and you have the whole weekend to finish it. Overall, test are time consuming but easy and you have a quiz every week which are also easy.
As much as people don't like her I would say she's a easy professor to have. The papers can be a bit difficult and there are tests every week but because there's no limit on tries you just keep taking till you get 100%! It's the only class where I have a perfect 100% still, LOTS of completion grade! You only need 4 out of 7 labs and most r groups!
i love miss dumpy
Although the Foner reading isn't required and her attendance is not you will be lost if you don't show up. Suppose you are okay with hearing "umm" every two seconds in a lecture this class is for you! She does weekly quizzes with unlimited attempts but her tests are assigned on weekends and are essays so please keep in mind if you work.
I actually liked this class aside from the tests which include two essays per test that do take up a whole weekend, but you get friday and monday to do them so it's doable. She really cares about what she teaches. The labs are helpful for the tests so do them. You get unlimited tries on quizzes. Overall her class is easy to pass if you do the work.
I did not enjoy this class, this is coming from someone who usually doesn't mind sticking it out. You'll have something due every week (2 essay-based exams, quizzes, or lab) at an odd time (5 pm) which could make it hard for working students. I did not find the lectures very engaging because the lectures felt dragged out to meet the 90 mins.
Don't take this professor. She makes you attend labs outside of class and her instructions are poor. She rambles during her lecture and is boring to listen to.
I'm currently taking this class and it is actually the most ridiculously lecture-heavy and reading-heavy intro class I've taken. Expect to read 80-90 pages of textbook a week plus 4 different documents that'' take around 2 hours to take notes and read.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Each test consists of you writing two essays over documents that will not make any sense unless you know 18th century language and grammar. The tests are also taken over the weekend which is very impractical for those like me who work. Duffy is a very nice professor but this course is too much for an intro class.
Professor Duffys lectures are boring which makes it difficult to want to attend class. I had a 100 for the first 8 weeks, but the written exam totally dropped my grade. I consider myself a decent writer but the exams are open on the weekends when most students work which in turn makes it difficult to write two essays. Very harsh grader as well.
Duffy is a decent lecturer but her classes are so unbelievably boring. Her lectures have nothing to do with quizzes or exams. Don't be fooled by her exams being online and open-book because those exams are two essays due on Mondays at 5. On average I write upwards of 3k words for both essays for mid grades on them. Don't do it unless u have to.
This teacher makes you write 2 long essays per test (3 tests) with at least 5 historical quotes in each from gibberish historical documents. All of this is only open on the weekends so if you do not want to spend the majority of your weekend doing this, I would not take this class. Test are graded extremely hard as well.
professor duffy is a professional yapper. lectures are so long and dry. attendance isn't required, except for labs, so i recommend not attending. tests are 2 long essays with little to no guidance. depending on your IA, the tests will either be hard or easy. my grader failed a majority of students on things not outlined in rubric. good luck!
Bro she can yap for hours, her class us just her talking. Attendance is not required only for labs and there are 7 you only have to do 4 I only went to this class 4 times. She is also paranoid about plagiarism. You have a 10 question quiz due each week u get unlimited attempts though and 3 test consisting of 2 essays each she gives you the sources
Yaps too much
the only grades that are assigned are essays, 7 total labs all being essays, 3 tests all being essays. her class is also very boring and her voice is very annoying to listen to, every 12 seconds she goes "uuummmmm" and its the most annoying thing in the world. when you get your test grades back and check for the feedback, her TA's give you nothing
i don't like that all of our exams are essays. Duffy is an easy going person but her lectures are insufferable and she goes on tangents. i don't really think i learned anything in that class but the curriculum is simple and answers are on google since its history. labs are easy. it could be worse. All history classes here will be hard
For a core curriculum course, this class is difficult for no reason. I haven't gotten above a B on any of the tests but still managed to get a low A because of the EC. The ONLY upside to this class is that the tests were open for 4 days and taken at home and attendance isn't required. I would NOTTT recommend unless you're actually into history.
Professor Duffy's lectures can be dry and long-winded, but the course is manageable if you stay on top of the weekly quizzes and essay-based exams. Utilize Unstuck AI and other study resources to prepare for the challenging tests. Overall, it's a decent history class.
She repeats the word "um" every five seconds in her lectures and takes up all the time with only two slides. Her lectures are not very helpful for the tests, you're better off learning yourself. The essay exams take up your entire weekend so do not plan on having fun lol! Good luck to anyone who couldn't get another professor :)
god help us all
Do not take Duffy as a professor. Not only are the lectures excruciatingly boring, but she creates massive essay tests and then makes one of the only sources you can use something you have to buy on your own time. So disappointed in the level of teaching she provides. Avoid at all costs.
One of the most annoying professors I've ever had. Her lectures are decent, IF SHE DIDN'T SAY THE WORD "UMMM" or "UHHH" EVERY COUPLE SECONDS. I also had one of my essays as AI generated even though I wrote the paper myself. She is also very paranoid about AI, you can't even use Grammarly. I don't recommend this professor AT ALL, I warned you.
If you love history, Shannon Duffy is incredible. She is incredibly knowledgeable with very unique and insightful perspectives on history. I find her lectures very engaging and eccentric. The writing assignments are very time consuming and it's definitely a tougher class than some other gen-ed history classes, but well worth it IF you care.
it was very hard to be in her lectures. she says "um" every other word and only talks about what diseases on were going during different time periods and it was'nt interesting to listen to. attendance isn't required and the work is super easy though so you could also just read the text
im a junior and this class was one of the hardest ive ever taken. Her lectures are extremely boring and the TA are awful. Mine graded harsh and was very passive aggressive The test essays are SO difficult and you only get one source she gives you to use and it makes no sense. I would 100% avoid this class if you hate history and essays especially.
don't trust the syllabus. she gets really behind in the material because she dwells on topics for too long, but she does know her stuff.
Basics out of the way: 2 essays per exam. Attendance not mandatory. You need the books. I agree she is a terrible lecturer. I can tell she enjoys her profession, but she rambles and says "um" a few too many times. It was tiring, so I stopped going. You don't need to attend class to do good on the exams, just use the primary documents provided.
YAP YAP YAPPP DON'T TAKE! Required attendance with face on, and she lovess to call on people over 30 pages writings that are BORING and from like 200 yrs ago. Gave me a 0 for not adding a title to an entire essay. DOES NOT SHUT UP! I will cry happy tears when i never have to see her face again. NOT FOR THE WEAK and especially non history majors.
RIDICULOUS. DID NOT GRADE MY FINAL BEFORE GRADES WERE DUE, AND I NOW HAVE AN F IN THIS COURSE THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY MAJOR. DO NOT TAKE THIS LADY!!!!!!!!!!!
Very long and boring lectures with little to no information. The IAs are either absent all the time or comepletely useless. Took the course for credit and she takes the class wayy more seriously than she should.Take this class if you are a History geek and loves to read long papers!
Had a Lab assignment each week, which was a full-page essay. Must be to her standard, didn't like if you used outside sources, even if correctly cited. Exams are graded harshly too, I provided the adequate amount of citations and sources for exam and she still only gave me a C.
THIS IS A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR!!! She has no knowledge about AI, if you have 1% mark of AI on ur paper she'll fail you for it!!! And on top of that she'll make you sit in a zoom meeting to explain your essay and where you got ur materials?!?! This class is essay heavy and she makes it almost impossible to pass!
This class is extremely easy to pass, even if you don't know anything about history. Her quizzes are unlimited attempts. The tests are two essays based on already given primary documents, and she lists them exactly how she wants them to be cited. Attendance isn't necessary unless there's a lab, her lectures are very hard to sit through.
When ever I did my zoom w her for “ai” her cat kept stomping on her keyboard and she kept moaning. She scared me.
I don't know why there are so many bad reviews because this class is one of the easiest I've taken, and I'm not an outstanding student, lol. I took 1320 last semester and 1310 now, and it's all the same. unlimited attempt quizzes are easy, and only a few times a semester there are long essays, but you have time to do them.
Lectures were so insanely boring and she referred to Black people as "the Blacks"...only good part is you dont have to sit through the lectures to pass.
DONT DO IT BOO,IDC HOW BAD YOU NEED THAT CREDIT!!!!!!!
You will hear her say "Um" at least 50 times a day, yaps ALOT. Requires you to do 2 essays per exam and grades hard. Do not recommend.
Genuinely one of the worst professors you're gonna hear a lot of filler words she's not gonna hope you understand anything she's just gonna keep on telling you to look at your notes and also her student teachers are horrible at grading papers. I used her exact format of how she wanted to work excited and it's just all too confusing.
DONT BELIEVE BAD REVIEWS yes you have to read but it's easy to understand! labs are relatively easy and you only have 3 exam essays and one is the final! Essays are easy if you read the material given and if you try. She does talk a lot in lectures but you don't really need to pay attention just read the material given when you need to use them!!!!
Shannon Duffy is personally the worst professor i've ever had. She fills every gap in her sentences with um, much like how much she fills her lectures with bs.
I'm convinced all the bad reviews are just lazy lol. Duffy is a good professor, and every history class I've taken is writing intensive so idk what people expect. Grading was clear, and I never got below a 90 on the tests. She gives feedback that explains your grade. Use your lab answers for your test questions since they are almost always related.
Unorganized, sources wasn't helpful enough, IA very strict on grading essays and doesn't help explaining why they only put feedbacks that doesn't support the explanation for the mistakes, recommend not to take it. Could lead you to fail for the degree plan 100% I would find a better teacher with better IA assistance
I'm shocked at all the bad reviews; Shannon Duffy has been nothing but kind in my opinion. Attendance isn't mandatory but she addresses a lot of material on the test so I would go. Depending on your TA, you might have a tough grader, but I liked mine and haven't received below a 90, and history is NOT a subject I'm good at. Offers extra credit.
Got my grades wrong, provided 0 feedback when I had to EMAIL to ask for feedback on my paper. Anyone who says people who gave bad reviews are “lazy” is BS. I got an A in this class and it was easy, but you better be ready to do it yourself cause Duffy is the slowest and most unorganized prof I've had.
Not very clear. I stopped going to any class except labs and still got an A+. She is ok but disorganized. IA are hard graders. Tests are online essays you have a weekend to do.
Overall, Duffy's class was tolerable but I wouldn't take it again. The class information is super interesting but her teaching style can be difficult to follow. She's super nice but not very organized and moves very very fast and in a scattered order. Expect to already be comfortable with college level research. Not terrible but not the best.
I was really nervous to take this course due to the ratings, but Dr. Duffy is a really amazing teacher. She gave amazing feedback on my assignments and made sure I understood everything. I enjoyed this class and would definitely retake it again.
I MEAN SHE IS GOOD PERSON BUT THE WAY SHE TEACHES...... UMMMMM I NEVER UNDERSTOOD A WORD COZ MAYBE THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE WITH ME BUT HISTORY WAS NEVER MY MAJOR SO! IDK I AM SORRY
Duffy is a great history professor. Literally the only thing you need to do to be successful is to listen to the instructions she provides. I guarantee you, she will answer your questions during the introduction of any assignment if you LISTEN!! Knows her stuff. Cite correctly and you'll be fine.
Her lectures are pretty confusing and hard to follow, but you don't really have to pay attention to do well on the weekly quizzes (which are unlimited attempts), as well as the test essays, as long as you have a basic understanding of the material and read the primary documents, you'll do fine.
Her class is very disorganized and very very very document heavy. You need to have some understanding of history to help you understand the exams and quizzes and lab, because you will learn nothing. She uses top hat for attendance but if you get it get the quiz question wrong its half a point. Not fair
I just wanna come on here to let everyone know that if you are a person who likes to talk/work with other people or cant focus on someone talking the ENTIRE lecture, do NOT take this class. She does TopHat to ask questions during the lecture but it isn't very interactive. She also says things that aren't important to the material. good luck queens!
Though I understand she's a very intelligent lady that's passionate about what she talks about, be prepared for her bluntness. There's no leeway for error; you have to have your stuff together. TopHat records attendance, definitely do all labs for extra credit, and the exams are all essays full of documents - do not wait to do them.
Complete POS, i submitted the wrong file on accident, and noticed a day after grade was due for my FINAL, and she failed me with no flexibility, or even a “hey this is the wrong file” do not recommend. Complete and total a** for a intro class
