The teacher is nice, shes just not a good teacher. Her grading system uses "chili peppers" instead of points which just makes everything confusing and makes us feel like we are 5. She makes everyone write down a question at the end of class, wastes 30 minutes next class answering the question, then speeds through the lecture.
professor eaton is very nice but her lectures are too fast grading system isnt fair for the quizzes at least. must get an 85% on the quiz or you fail it must pass every quiz to get at least a C. we are allow to retake an exam but you dont know what you miss and you dont how how many questions you miss. if ur good at stats then this is perfect
Professor Eaton is one of the most is difficult professors I have encountered. She grades by chili peppers and you can do mild, medium or spicy. The grading system makes zero sense and she refuses to give you a actual grade. Her lectures are very long and fast , meaning she does not give any explanation for the questions in the lecture.
The grading system using chili peppers is confusing at first, but she outlines exactly what you need to do to get an A: write one paper, pass all medium level quizzes, and complete enough homework to get 80 chili peppers. You don't even have to do all the homework. Easy class if you pay attention, very lenient and understanding professor.
Professor Eaton is very understand a nice person, but her teaching isnt the greatest. I have never felt like I was set up for failure until I took this class. Her grading system is so unfair. Im order to get a C you have to pass all Mike quizzes with a 85%, if you dont you automatically fail the quiz. There are retakes but take a lot more work.
Dr. Eaton means well, she really does. But her lectures are painful to sit through and way too slow. She doesn't really explain where the equations come from, she just tells you what they measure. Her grading system made the class feel like an absolute joke. You will pass if you try, but you won't learn anything.
I've never taken a class where the homework holds more weight to your grade than the exams. The way this class was set up was awful. Her lectures were hard to understand so I turned to reading the suggested textbook and succeeded with that. Her and her TA were not on the same page which led to further confusion. Homeworks take forever to complete.
The class is tense at first but if you reach out to the professor early hand then you will receive a lot more guidance and understanding. I had to settle with a C since I did not take the class serious at first. Her lectures are difficult to follow through but if you meet with her in office hours, you will receive a lot more help and get an A.
Great lecturer, fun and interesting class, very fair tests. She is super accessible outside of class and is very accommodating/nearly always willing to work with students if there are any issues that come up. Most of the bad reviews for her are from her PSY290 class which people hate no matter the teacher, I wouldn't take them too seriously.
She lacked basic common sense. Often made no sense and don’t even teach her lectures for the class she runs. She’s a irresponsible joke for a professor. She shouldn’t be allowed to run a class unsupervised.
I could go on for an hour about how horrific this person's class is, but I am not able to include even 1/3 of everything in this post. I had to delete what I wrote due to there being a character limit. Therefore, I will say this: Under absolutely NO circumstance should anyone ever take her class. If it is the only class available, transfer.
Should not have a job teaching rocks, never mind students.
Took NEU 307 this semester. Absolutely tragic course. Quizzed us on material we didn't learn yet. When students emailed her, she said "You should've studied harder" even when future modules were locked. Class average was a C- for most weekly quizzes. NO help outside of class. WAY too much textbook reading. IMPOSSIBLE quizzes. Don't take this course
Take this class if you want to ruin your GPA. You are tested on things you haven't learned yet, quizzes are glitchy, and you can't see the full questions. If you email the prof she doesn't care and tells you you're wrong- even if everyone in the class has complained. Seriously... just take something else.
The content of this class was great! Its basically psychopharmacology. However, the quizzes most certainly didn't reflect the content that was presented. I think the amount of in-depth reading that was necessary was not realistic for weekly quiz questions. Def think they should make BIO and CHEM a prereq for this class.
I don't even know what to say. Tests are full of spelling errors and info that was never even mentioned once in class or textbook. If you were to take notes for each test you would have 15-20 pages, and that still would not cover everything on the test. Most questions are not application of knowledge, but scavenger hunt questions that mean nothing.
Needs to be fired to prevent the mindlessness of her teaching style from reaching any more unfortunate students.
This class left me speechless. Some of the test questions are not even complete, as in they were just cut off mid-sentence. There are words spelled incorrectly on every single exam. She does not actually teach, just assigns hours and hours (and hours) of reading pointless material because her exam is on something completely different. STAY. AWAY.
I still feel like someone is going to pop out from somewhere being like "Thank you for being a part of this psychology experiment; here is your A and sorry for making you hate everything for two months!" Unfortunately, however, I think it was real. Do you need therapy or anger management? Well if you take this class, you will.
Just do not ever, under any circumstance, take this class with her. The course material is so dense it would be a difficult class even with lecture slides, study materials practice quizzes etc. and yet....she gives you nothing. I mean NOTHING. You can't even see your own quiz results haha. Zero effort by her...they're not even her lectures either.
DO NOT TAKE HER, unless you like to be graded on random items pulled from the 150 page reading and 3 hours of videos from the first week and NOT the major points of the readings. I couldn't learn anything about this class because of the fact she cant even quiz on the simplest ideas. With this, her quizzes had errors in them, or material not learned
Honestly the worst class I have ever taken throughout my college career. She does NOT care about her students. Her tests sound like a drunk person wrote them, she assigns hundreds of pages of reading every week with no guidlines on what to study, and scheduled an exam literally on Easter Sunday. Do not take this class if you have the choice.
Complete wreck. Stay far away from this professor.
The organization of this class is actually laughable. I should have dropped the first week when she sent out 3 separate emails containing completely contradictory information for the same assignment. Low class average on every test, she literally sets you up for failure and does not care. Also super passive-aggressive when you email her.
Terrible experience. As other students have mentioned, she is super unhelpful and defensive in her replies to issues about the software, content, or confusing information on the syllabus/announcements. Passive aggressive and dismissive, prevents ur ability to fast forward thru lectures she didn't even create and that aren't even on the test.
Most work I've ever had to do for a class. The weekly quizzes are weighted at 60%, with most questions directed to the text. The fact that you are expected to extensively read and watch lecture videos daily is ridiculous for people with outside commitments. I was able to argue for regarding some poorly designed quiz questions. AVOID this class.
I found the class to be an average amount of work for the fact that it was accelerated and upper-division. Breakdown is weekly quizzes and discussion boards, one essay project, and one powerpoint project. No +/- grade options, so only full letter grades available. Extra credit is available most weeks. Interesting material as well.
Not the hardest class I've taken, but definitely one of the worst professors. Barely gives any instruction, has countless typos and incomplete sentences on quizzes, and can be very dismissive when you ask for help. I loved the content of the course, but idk if it's worth the stress of dealing with this professor.
This class is awful! Stay away! After the first week, I had no idea what I took notes on. Biology and chemistry need to be requirements before taking this class. The lectures are by some other professor and are not great.
WORST PROFESSOR AT ASU. And the neuroscience classes are limited so ill have to take a course with her again. I have yet to earn a C at ASU and she is my first.
If you have options, do not take this class. You will only hear from the "facilitator" (professor would be a stretch) of this course material when there is an announcement about something being due. You will be lectured by the course developer and the course assistant will provide feedback and email responses. Workload is unreasonable.
There is no structure in her class. Her tests are filled with typos and grammar errors. She does not give clear direction of how to study or understand the material. DO NOT TAKE HER.
This is one of the hardest (if not the hardest) class I have ever taken. She expects at least 4 hours a day of just reading. The weekly quizzes are very discouraging because you could take great notes on the lectures and still be so confused because of how specific the questions are. If you need to take this class, make sure you have a LOT of time.
Took this class as an upper level course outside of my degree - big mistake. This is much more of a chemistry course than a psychology course that it seems like when described. Professor Eaton has very specific guidelines to her assignments that are not clearly outlined in any assignment or syllabus. Not willing to work with you, don't recommend.
There is a lot of reading. Very specific assignments. Read every last word of the rubric. Grades very hard. And the tests are extremely difficult. Offers extra credit options which is nice
Professor was really interactive and was super willing to go over information that I was stuck on, the quizzes are difficult but if you know the information and prepare for the test they were not super terrible. Plenty of time to take the test too and has extra credit given through out the semester which does help a lot.
EDIT:The first class I w/ her was horrible, but I realized she didn't set up the course (your brain on drugs). I took her Neuro of L&M class, where she does the lectures and made the course. Although there are still some kinks, she is a great lecturer, tests are straightforward, gives lots of EC, and lots of opportunity to make up missed points.
Taking neuroscience was a lot more difficult than I imagined, but seriously, it's not bad though, it's pretty interesting, yet very test heavy and also heavy when it comes to grading tests and paper, and participations matter in this case. If anyone interested or majoring in neuroscience, I would highly recommend her, but be aware of how she grades
Compared to neuroscience, her physio-psych was a lot harder and more test heavy, but the best part, she drops the lowest quiz score, and the final is optional, plus there is extra credit. Aside from how tough she grades, I cannot deny how good of a psych instructor she is, I took this and neuro back-to-back this semester. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER
Tough exams but doable if u put in the work. Assigns a big paper due at end of the semester. Tough grader but offers plenty of time for feedback (offers a rewrite to get a better grade). Interesting lectures and u can tell shes interested in the topics; her passion alone is what makes u attend. Group work consists of presenting a journal article.
NEU 324 There is an insane amount of work required. In order to do well on the open-note (paper only) quizzes once a week that determine your grade, you must read and take notes on every single piece of information in the textbook which adds up to about 30-40 pages of notes per exam. Quizzes are super specific.
The pace of the course was great & Professor Eaton's lectures are very engaging. Her tests are on paper & open-note & consist of a mix of multiple choice & free-response questions. She gives you plenty of opportunity to prepare & ask questions leading up to them. She really wants you to understand the course content. One of my favorite professors!
do not take this class unless your life is school, if you work or have other things that take up time in your life this class is not worth the stress or your time. I have straight A's yet a D in this one currently. I am on track to graduate early next semester and this is just not worth the stress. Would rather take a summer.
This class is honestly best taken by itself, do not take it with other classes. I took this class ASU online, 7.5 week course. The TA is a heavy grader and we read persuall articles and post discussion posts. The class is doable, though quizzes are worth so much it's scary.
Prof. Eaton, was not very understanding. The test were tedious. If you take this, take it with a different professor because she does not know what she is doing.
This class was insanely hard for a 101-level class. The material was not taught at the level of an intro class. Many of the quizzes had an average score of 50-60% in my session! The questions on the quizzes were also very tricky and worded confusingly. Unless you already have a strong science background I would not recommend taking this class.
Please save your sanity and don't take this class. Your GPA will 100% drop because of how she grades. She was not very understanding and this class is far from an introductory level. Everyone in my session struggled extremely and expressed their concerns on discussion posts. There's 1% EC like that will help...
Expect to have no life when taking this class. You will spend at least 6 hours a day just on notes to keep up with quiz deadlines every Friday. All the quizzes are timed and way too short for the amount of questions + the content. The questions are meant to trick you and make the test impossible. Constant complaints by every student in the class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I studied for 60+ hours a week and so did most other students but we still did horribly. The first test seems easy but It's goes downhill from there. I met with TAs every day but the questions on the quiz are geared towards your failure. No opportunity for retakes and this is not 101 level. Find another helpful professor.
I had all A+ in my classes except this one. The quizzes are impossible despite the amount of notes you take. She grades very strictly and you can't retake a quiz. Another professor is doing the video lectures and he makes no sense. I rewatched the videos over 3x on 0.5 speed to try and understand what was going on. There's absolutely no structure.
Find another neuroscience professor! This class is insanely quiz heavy and they make up for 60% of your grade. They require lockdown browser and even though It's open note, It's extremely difficult. The questions on the test and very specific and hard to understand. This class will take up your entire life and be prepared for 50+ pages of notes.
I should've dropped this class as soon as I had the chance. It seems manageable at first but the lectures progressively get much worse. The guy on the video lectures does not know what he's saying. The quizzes are so disorganized and incomprehensible. She gave us the most amount of work on finals week with 0 extensions and a quiz. DO NOT TAKE.
She is very snarky in her responses back to her students. She makes such an interesting subject become such a scary one due to her lack of teaching. I think that she needs more training within how to interact with her students and how to support them because she failed to really do so. I would never take her again if I could help it.
I'm confused by the comments here... Dr. Eaton is nothing if not caring! Neuroscience is challenging, and so it's silly to assume the intro will be a cakewalk. She drops some lower scores and gives extra credit. So long as you follow the rubric, syllabus, and study guides, alongside doing the work and putting in the time, you will get an A.
Neuroanatomy is difficult by nature, but she went way too fast in lecture, pretty much just reading through the slides. It seemed to me that she has a hard time connecting with students/ people in the room were not following most of the time. She also removed images from slides so that we couldn't memorize them for exams. Would not recommend.
I had high hopes for neuroanatomy and was excited, but the format/organization of this class really needs to change. I get it that she knows her stuff and wants us to learn, but mixing up anatomy with everything even slightly related to the topic is overwhelming. The information from the Internet, book and the lectures combined is just way too much
Great prof difficult class. Tests feel like scavenger hunts though. in most classes it's easy to tell what content will be in tests, not this course. study guides don't cover entire test content. need lecture notes. print page entire modules as notes if you want chance for A. Missing just 3-4 questions will drop tests to B. test weight very heavy.
Dr. Eaton was average, she uses Dr. McClure's lectures which I found to be confusing. Class is all quizzes and Yellowdig but there is extra credit. Quizzes are all open note. The best way to pass is take a crazy amount of notes, even things that seem irrelevant as they will be on the quizzes. Doable but take someone else if possible.
Do not take this professor. She intentionally leaves gaps in her lecture slides that she posts, and in class she goes through her lectures way too fast. I could not keep up with notetaking despite typing my notes non stop. She definitely knows her stuff, but the way the class is structured is hard to learn from.
Neuroscience of Learning & Motivation: This was my first course with Dr. Eaton and I genuinely enjoyed it. I put in about 20 hrs of work/week & got an A. She does her own lectures which are engaging but can be difficult to follow along with at times. Expect to read 50-100 pages/week, heavy on reading research papers but quizzes are straightforward
These reviews terrified me but I am very pleased! She's available outside the class, has good lectures, and is very clear about what's asked of the class. The exams can be a tough cookie but they have extra credit and one quiz is dropped. She also gives TA opportunities and has sent emails about neuro things! I would take again.
Quizzes are the toughest part but not impossible! She is a very helpful, makes you interested in neuroscience, and prepares you to write good research. I spent about 17 hours a week doing work and did great. Hard class but very worth it and fun.
Honestly, listen to the reviews. Yes, we are aware a Neuroscience class is not going to be easy but this class was far from organized. NO she does not drop your lowest grade, and the EC barely counts. The lectures/textbooks are not similar to the quizzes and there's not enough time to get through all the questions. Do not recommend at all.
Very passionate teacher and the organization of her slides/study guides are great. I just wish the exams were not this intensive, especially considering this is only a 101 course. She allows 1 note card to bring for exams which can be useful but you definitely still need to put in the hours because there is so much material. I was an AP/honors kid.
This Neuro 101 class is far too advanced for an introductory course. The quizzes are extremely intense and lengthy, with each having no fewer than 80 questions. If you want to have any semblance of a life outside of studying, I would not recommend taking this class. Take this class if u want no life, I guess.
She genuinely told my class to google something if we didn't finish writing down what was on the slides. She never ended class on time and at the end of the year she tried to guilt trip us to give her better reviews by saying "I read these around Christmas time guys so please be constructive :("
RUN! There were 5 exams and a "optional" final. PLUS an 100 point essay. She never lets us out of class on time and starts teaching new content at the ends of class. If you left "early" (on time) you miss out on tested content- that she will not be repeating because in her own words "if you miss information, google it, I do not go back slides".
She's not a bad professor at all. This class is supposed to be challenging. She offers extra credit, but it barely does anything. Exams are around 80 questions, but EVERYTHING is on the extra credit notes or the slides. She teaches exactly what's on the exams. One exam gets dropped, she's nice, a bit unorganized but its manageable. Recommend.
Dr. Eaton is an amazing professor! Her lectures are very informative and even though attendance isn't mandatory, the exam topics mostly come from the lectures. The exams may seem long but they don't take too much time and you learn everything from her and the extra credit notes. The textbooks were all online (there are 3). Would take again.
NEU 101 is a hard class- new terms, structures, and diagrams to memorize. But everything is in the slides/ extracredit notes. Persuall is used, but I wouldn't sweat the textbook readings too much. Just pay attention in class and watch 2 minute neuroscience on youtube to supplement. There are 4 quizzes, and optional final. Really interesting class!
This professor is awful. She gives attitude to students who approach her with any questions. The course itself is supposed to be introductory yet the information is that of a second or third year class. There is so much information that she expects students to learn in a short amount of time. The class is so unorganized. The TA was my saving grace.
It's a decent class, to be honest. Make sure to do all the assignments. Extra credit doesn't really do much tbh. Make sure to go on youtube and study after class because she can't really explain thing well. When people raise their hands she makes eye contact and moves on which is very weird lol. Tests are 70% of grade.
all the perusall kind of sucks, i haven't had problems w it in other classes, she just assigns way too many and they take forever. tbh tho, she doesn't explain well and just reads off the slides, took this w a friend and we both never went to class and just taught ourselves w the slides. got a b+, would've been at least an a if i had done iclicker
Yes, the class is challenging. Dr. Eaton will not hold your hand at all, but she's a kind and caring professor. You need to be smart and APPLY yourself. She offers extra credit on exams and throughout the school year and lets you use a notecard for every exam. Use the tools available to you. This is not a class you can BS and get an A in.
She was a great teacher. Exams were straight forward and no trick questions or anything. There's no homework besides the Perusall readings so its super manageable. Keep in mind that the negative reviews are from her online class NOT in person- highly recommend her for NEU 101
Dr. Eaton's lectures were always engaging and fun to attend. Her class is very reasonable as she offered extra credit notes before every exam, not mandatory attendance, notecards on exams and easy homework assignments. The content was easy to follow and learn and I overall really enjoyed this class.
I looked on here before taking neuro 101 and i thought it cant be that bad. However it was. She does offer study guides but as she likes to say it "its to help guide your study" Not everything on the study guide will be on the test there will be things on the test that were not on the study guide. this class was not structed for student success.
Well structured class with informative lectures from another professor used in the online course.Professor Eaton seemed very kind and open to people coming to see them outside of class, but in reality seemed overwhelmed. Quiz grades given last minute and wasn't able to go over with professor or TAs. Make sure to book weeks in advance. Content A+
This class is ok. She's not my fav, she talks too slow for my brain and is so unengaging. There are 5 exams including final, 1 gets dropped. 2 interactive textbook assignments due a week. she also gives paper handouts and uses them as attendance so show up + iclicker
super super slow and unengaging, i lost focus so many times. you have to comment publicly on the textbook thru perusall, and i found that 2 b mad annoying cs u gotta do it every 2 days or so for credit. test heavy, and the study guides dont help. making notes in class is difficult too bcs she teaches from slides.
Study guides are non-existent with advice that is vague and not helpful. Quizzes set up as if she has been giving students the benefit of Q and A. Too much content with no specifics of quiz content. Bad grades despite dedication of many hours to study. The text support activities aren't good either. We need practice quiz followed by graded quiz.
Ignores requests for help. Didn't have access to resources necessary for completing assignments and she ignored me throughout the whole semester when I emailed repeatedly for help. Likes to talk about herself.
Prof was very enthusiastic, explained her slides well with real world examples. She's very friendly and is open to any questions. Barely any hw, just weekly readings (DO THEM, THEY DO ADD UP). She gives a good amount of extra credit. Tests were straight-forward, study guides helped so much. Attend office hours! Prof has so many resources to help.
Dr Eaton was amazing in NEU 101 and I've taken my other neuro classes with her. She truly wants her students to succeed. I think she does give a lot of material, but as long as you do the work you should do fine on tests. I've only “failed” (a c on a quiz) anything when I didn't study or read
Positives are due dates flexible on average ~48 hours and some extensions are given no questions asked. However, lecture material is seriously lacking in specificity and given explanations of key concepts often gloss over important details. Direct definitions of terms almost never given. Everything is explained in layman's. Textbook is Sisyphean.
Not the best, but not the worst. Pay close attention to the lectures and slides provided. Gives a notecard for each exam and drops your lowest test grade.
Dr. Eatons lectures are very boring but the class work is very easy. She allows a note card for each exam and gives extra credit.
There is way too much work here for a lower level neuro class, especially considering the only pre requisite required is neuro 101. In reality, you need to come in understanding basic statistics and know how to write a research proposal. Way too advanced for a lower level bachelors class. There is also tons of work to get through every week
The final project in this class is worth 20% of your grade. The rubric has a separate column called "Exceeds Expectations", so even if you follow the actual assignment instructions, you will get an 80/100 because you didn't do more than you were expected to. Incredibly frustrating and unfair to students who are following the actual directions.
I was scared by this professor's ratings but she was really good. Her class is test heavy, but the exams reflected her slideshows to a T. (rare for a science course at ASU). Studying 2-3 days before should get you at least an 85 on the exam. The only annoying thing was Perusall before every class. The prof is rly caring and deserves higher rating.
Professor Eaton was passionate about the subject. However, I really didn't get much value from her class. Lectures consisted of reading off the slideshow and occasionally mentioning her own research, and then the four tests.
The class was interesting but Dr. Eaton was not very engaging. The tests were easy but long and you could make a cheat sheet. She gives 2% extra credit if you take notes for all 4 exams. How ever, you do have to annotate a textbook before each lecture which can get a little tedious. Overall, I enjoyed the content and her class was pretty chill.
This class was a bit challenging for me as a non-neuro major, but Dr. Eaton is extremely friendly and lively, and she genuinely cares about engaging her students and is passionate about what she teaches. There's 4 exams and an optional final, Perusall reading before every class, and iClickers during the lecture for points.
