Really seems to care that her students understand and she is very helpful. Only complaint is choice of readings. Guess who. :)
i have taken Ms.Hopkins since english 70 and she has taught me alot. i like her teaching style. she seems to enjoy teaching english. i would reccomend her to anyone.
Mrs. Hopkins is a great English teacher. She expects a lot from her students. She communicates well with everyone.
this teacher is on the ball, she if fun she makes things interesting. She has given me a whole new outlook on English. She is great
Wow, what a dynamo. Her and Dr. Isi make my day!

Great teacher, lover her accent.
BORING
It has been years now sense I have had her class. And looking back no one has ever been as helpful and AS USEFUL since. Her class turned has made all the difference. Warning: She wont think or do the work for you!
Shannon is very helpfull and very patient. She likes to push her students to constantly do better and she helps her students do that. if she isnt happy with something she explains why and helps you improve. i highly recommend Shannon Hopkins as she is the best YVCC has.
I have mixed feelings about her Lit class. While she is a great teacher her temper gets the better of her a lot. As far as the material covered... 9 out of 10 authors were Irish. I have nothing against Ireland, but this was supposed to be a Survey of English Lit from Victorian to the 20th Century. Meaning multi cultural.
If you REALLY want to learn, this class is for you. Mrs. Hopkins is an awsome instructor with high expectations and really cares for her students. You will need extra time to complete all assignments and I don't recommend if you you're not commited. You will definetely learn and get the most out of this class. 5 stars for Hopkins!
Mrs.Hopkins is awsome. She realy cares about her students and is always willing to help. you need extra time to complete all that's required but if you really want to learn and are committed, this class can really prepare you for other courses.Highly recommend; online version. 5 stars for Hopkins!!!
The instructors semantics, views, and temper got in the way of productivity.
This instructor is awesome. She is nice and very helpful. She responds to your questions and if you are having trouble with something, just ask. This class is hard but it is fun
Hard Class. Lots of work, but hopkins is a great teacher. She does have a little bit of a temper, but only because she expects so much more from her students. She has high expectations, and only wants her students to succeed in the class.
I found this professor to be very unhelpful. I do not recommend taking her for anything online.
Amazing woman and teacher!
My professor voiced her concerns about my ability to pass her class prior to beginning due to my confusion with the syllabus. I let her know I had never taken an online class and that i was serious about doing well in her class as a student. Upon meeting my professor for the first time, she was not polite nor did she introduce herself.
Shannon is awesome. She is very quick to respond to emails and help which is very helpful on an online setting. She challenges you to do better but doesnt overload you with too much to read. Just stay on top of your work and be semi-self motivated. The course is paced well and Shannon is very clear about what she wants. Great Class!!!
Shannon is fantastic! She expects top notch work and a lot of commitment. You can't just skate by on anything, you have to really put effort into your work. She made everything very clear and provided a lot of helpful information. She preps well for assignments and is understanding. She's great! I'd take her for any English course.
She may be great for 101 students but not for those of us not up to college level. Her canvas assignment schedule doesn't match the syllabus and if you don't know what youre assignment is youre screwed. Shes very unhelpful and biased. DONOT take if youre under college level, shes a bully.
She was a very helpful instructor in general and I learned a lot that prepped me for 102. HOWEVER, she's extremely argumentative and she's accusatory. Her modules are complete cow dung and she thinks the student is the problem when it's her setup. I've taken three online classes and they are 100 times easier to use/navigate on.
This teacher has a very strong accent that can be very difficult to understand at times. For classes lower than 101 I would never recommend her. She told all of our class that we weren't going to move on to 101 and also accused many of us of cheating when that was not the case.
My mother actually told me that I should take her class, Shannon taught her when she went here. Yes, she does have an accent, Irish i believe. But it is easy to understand. You do quite a bit of group work and you have to do three main papers which were super easy. She was easy to get along with and was very willing to help with anything.
She was rude and very unhelpful. Her assignments were unclear therefore when graded she would fail you because it wasn't what she wanted. She does not like for you to correct her and has quite the attitude. She refused to grade my assignments and does not give good feedback.
She researched, organized and distributed amazing course material that replaced an expensive textbook. A rigorous but satisfying class. Provides clear and concise communication in a timely manner. She's is constantly looking for more and better materials for her class. She also provided more feedback on our papers than any other class I've had.
You must read very carefully the papers that are given. She is tough. When she gives you advice you should take it and use it right away.
Tough grader. Not helpful. Tried asking for help, and she referred me to a blog she created. That didn't help me at all. I found her hard to approach. Seminars were intriguing though. She has high expectations.
Can be very hard to understand, since she has a heavy accent. If you ask questions she is more likely to help you. Not clear feedback and grades very tough without explanation. You will fail if you don't follow directions to a T.
She was very keen on having everything a certain way. Make sure you complete every single completion criteria on the projects. The class itself was helpful, but her attitude and the fact that she wants you to figure things out yourself could end up being very frustrating. Miss more than a few classes and you are dropped.
She's a great Professor.
Mrs. Hopkins is a good teacher if you want to have a better sense of how to site sources and how to become a better writer. She gives excellent feedback but she does give you work in order to increase your writing potential. I enjoyed her and she is very good at helping you create better papers. One of my favorite teachers.
She is very good with feedback. If you have a problem with a score you received she is easy to talk to and discuss the grade. She gives good feedback on papers you turn in. She is strict to a sense when it comes to grading. However if you put in the time and effort then you will get a good grade.
Shannon was by far one of my least favorite professors. I did not learn how to write an essay but all her homework was about gratitude and peace. I do not care for the class because of that reason. Everytime I asked her a question she would not answer it which made the class super confusing at times. Would not take again her class again.
Ms. Shannon is a good instructor and cares for her students. She's tough and expects you to read the directions carefully. She will answer questions that are not addressed in the syllabus and instructions. She is easy to work with IF you are willing to put in the effort. Checking in daily is a requirement. This is college, not High school!!
Mrs. Hopkins is a great professor. She is fair and clear of her expectations for us. She is understanding that mistakes do happen and gives us a chance to fix it, even if we can't get a better grade on the original assignment. I am glad that my first college course was with her.
Ms. Hopkins is a great teacher. I enjoyed her class very much. There is a good amount of reading but it is a English class. She gives you bonus assignments and is very helpful and gives great feedback on your work. If you work hard and check in every day you will do great. Pay attention to detail. Pretty easy class if you put in the work.
Shannon Hopkins is a great teacher who really shows us the true meaning of attention to detail. I really enjoyed taking this class and I have learned how to be a detailed writer. Shannon was prompt to as answer any questions and always gave me great feedback that helped me succeed in the class. I am happy I took her class!
Mrs. Hopkins is a great professor, She has high exceptions but she gives you the tools to help you succeed. She is understanding that mistakes can happen and gives you a chance to fix it.
Prof Hopkins is a fantastic instructor; she reviews the assignments on time and provides with feedback, comments, and tips. I truly appreciate how she takes the time to make videos based on our assignments and share them with the students so that we can get a clear idea of what she expects from the papers. However, the grading criteria can be confusing.
She is a very nice teacher; her ultimate goal is to have her students be creative and think for themselves. Because of this, she has a unique style of grading. Basically, each assignment is pass or fail, and if you don't meet the criteria you fail. In order to fully understand how it works, and how to get an A,pay close attention the first day of class
Shannon Hopkins is a fantastic instructor. She was very understanding when we had computer/internet issues and would always try to work with us. She was also willing to answer any questions we had, whether it be about the class or about college choices. Be prepared to write a lot about gratitude :)
Groups. Groups. Groups. Maybe I got a bad group but group projects are definitely one of the big components of her criteria. She's a nice person but for me she would always forget about grades and assignments even when I emailed to remind her. She's just NOT a teacher I would want to take again. Took class again (different professor) and got an A.
The English 101 class I took from Hopkins was a hybrid, so it was half online and half in class. Be sure to ask questions if you don't understand something, she is more than willing to answer by email anytime. Take advantage of class time with her in person to ask any questions about online work. If you do the work, you'll do fine.
I took a hybrid class (only Monday and Wednesday) and knew it would be a lot, but didnt realize it would stress me out so bad. If you arent consistent or super dedicated to college this is a hard class with a lot of time. She grades very strangely and its sometimes 15 hours in work outside of class. She is very kind though and cares a lot.
Throughout the course, we were only working on one Essay. I did not get much practice writing essays. Everything was based on deciphering fake news. The way assignments are set up are tricky and stressful, NOTHING IS STRAIGHT FORWARD. The grading system used makes absolutely no sense, and makes it difficult to know how you are doing in the class.
Its a Labor Contract class, if you meet the minimum requirements she lays out-you get a B. If you exceed those requirements w/great work and show you have improved, she'll invite you to write a paper for an A at the end of the Qtr. Always available through email and office hours to answer questions. Very nice person and cares about her students.
Make these classes your top priority, she is a tough one to please at times but willing to listen. Ask questions when your lost, group projects are not fun but make sure to get the work done ASAP for them. She looks at those who are doing the actual work. Learned a lot about writing and have become a better writer because of her.
Great online class, very fun, Intuitive and engaging. There is at least 1 paper a week, 500ish words, so not too demanding in her 101 class. Chances for EC and make up. Has a sense of humor and really engages with her students. Easily my favorite teacher this year. The labor contract is an amazing deal for both parties also. A+ prof
Amazing prof and even more amazing class and subject. Mixes it up with different tasks and readings to keep things interesting. Labor contract is really fun and simple. Some people complained about workload but her class far easier compared to my others. 1 paper a week and various short sentences or replies. Great sense of humor and learned a lot.
shes mean and her work load is so heavy and her accent is super annoying
Made the class less about English and more political. Pushed her beliefs on students a little more than teachers should. Usually I'm good at English, but this class was difficult. Everyone starts out earning a B. You can't get an A by doing everything she asks... you have to go above and beyond. She also assigns a ton of homework.
Assignments may not seem like a lot but require tons of work. They also arent very detailed so youre left confused, and when you have a question you cant even ask her one on one, she has you post your questions to a forum. Shes not very understanding of personal life issues either. Definitely dont recommend if you dont plan on going above
If you dont plan on going above and beyond dont take her. Shes a tough grader and isnt very detailed in what she asks for. You dont even start with a solid A, you start with a B and she has to INVITE you to be able to get an A grade. Shes not very understanding. And shell definitely call you out if she sees you even glance at your phone lol
I took both Eng 101 and 102 from Hopkins. If you are looking for an easy "A," do not take her class. If you want to learn and are a self-starter, you will learn a great deal in this class. I wrote essays in her classes I had no idea I was capable of writing. For me, Hopkins was very helpful and encouraging, the best English teacher I've had.
Do NOT take this class if you plan on taking any others at the same time. The workload for this class is insane. 3-4 assignments due TWICE a week, of which 1-3 are 500+ word writings, plus daily blogs, plus the labor log, plus random ungraded asn thrown in at will. You have to somehow "go above" to earn an a, the highest you can earn is a b. Bad.
Professor Hopkins would go the extra mile throughout the course. She's very intelligent and was always smiling/kind, which made me excited to go to class. I would recommend her if you plan to improve your writing and research skills, which is done through a heavy workload. Overall, I really enjoyed this class!
Start a schedule or planner, written or digital. Always go over the list of criteria before handing in assignments, take ownership over your mistakes and grow. She's a great teacher, and she pretty much spells out how to get an A. Follow the guidelines, ask questions, read the syllabus, have fun. Everything isn't supposed to be easy!
Professor Hopkins gives her all when teaching! This class was taken online, she provides clear concise written directions along with videos & provided great learning points for me, she was very clear on what corrections needed to be made to make our writing stronger. I took away a lot of knowledge, learned to be a power writer, & would take again.
She is rude, she doesnt like students emailing her as she gets defensive and accusatory. I would never recommend her for any classes.
Mrs. Hoppkins is great! I would absolutely take her class again! In fact, I'm already planning to for next quarter! Yes, she does give a lot of time-consuming homework. Some of it just seems like busywork. But overall, she is amazing! She always has a smile on her face and is never in a bad mood! She's one of the nicest professors on campus!
Prof. Hopkins is a great English teacher, but the semi-online class was a learning curve. The class has a straightforward labor contract. Be prepared to put some time into the class. However, you only write one paper throughout the quarter, and there's very, very little assigned reading. Good class.
Professor Hopkins provides amazing information and gives links for her class, however when it comes to reaching out to her and asking questions I felt that she wasnt able to respond appropriately and was very cold. If you take her class you had better read her syllabus and videos because she offers very little help outside of that.
Explained to her that I was working full time and trying to do school and wouldn't unlock assignments. The workload was absolutely ridiculous. I do not recommend this class at all.
Great class! Able to get extra credit each week.
Very friendly and patient. With online school, completion matters and you must get at least all but one or two assignments done in order to unlock the next week of assignments. If you don't pass on the first try, she'll request a zoom meeting and give you a chance to redo. I probably wouldn't have even passed if she wasn't a genuinely nice person.
Weekly extra credit option. Heavy work load. Tells you to use voice in papers but then limits what you can say. Has certain assignments locked until you do other ones. Requires the respondus lock down browser and camera when doing your essay. I turned in an assignment on time but because the link didn't allow her to edit I got 50%. Good luck!
Took Hopkins for 102 summer quarter. Ridiculous workload. Due dates were Weds and Sun with 4 or 5 assignments due each time, 300 words at least. This class was... very politically motivated... thought this was a PoliSci class instead of Eng. Be careful. This class gave me ulcers. You've been warned.
Professor Hopkins was very thorough on every assignment and made sure to be very specific on answering very question I had. Good feedback is also provided after very assignment.
Hopkins' class was very politically driven. All the main topics had something to due with how the government is. I was hoping for an English course, but I didn't really get that from her. While I did pass this class, I hope it wasn't so much about political issues in our country. Lots of writing, research, and she's a tough grader.
I have never had a problem with any english instructor until I took Hopkins class. She is absolutely horrible, don't bother with the class, she'll probably fail you anyway.
Do not take this class if you do not have to. English was my favorite subject till I took this class. Too much work for too little of points. No pleasing this professor.
Awful class taught by a ridiculous teacher. Do NOT take this class. This teacher includes politics and police brutality in the first page of the syllabus, this is an English class not a political science class. Voice is also awful to listen to. Bitter.
Professor Hopkins, is very political, its exhausting how political she is. She let our class vote on the grading rubric and that was super stressful in the first two weeks we had three different grading systems we went through. She likes students to vote on things, and it's stressful. Have to follow all of her directions or you'll lose point fast
Hopkins was a very good teacher. She explains things well. I had her for research and writing and it was only 1 long essay that you work on throughout the whole quarter. Just follow her instructions and it's an A. Do not procrastinate.
Such an amazing teacher and I loved having her! I took her course while also in high school on top of another college course so don't listen to these people saying her course is impossible to do. Most of her assignments were optional (extra credit) so at this point if you fail you were trying to fail. Assignments were easy to follow along, 10/10.
To many videos, not consistent in given assignments dates, besides that an OK class.
Keeping it short, lack of responsibility, lack of proper test taking procedures and lack of proper communication.
very harsh grader and expects to much from students. it's not worth the credit or time
Overall, I didn't hate this class and would retake it if I needed to. The workload was a bit much initially, but after I got used to the class it was okay. I was not a fan of the way she graded. One good thing about Professor Hopkins is that she was always pretty clear about what she expected from you.
Professor Hopkins is a knowledgeable teacher, however, she focused too much on what not to do, rather than teaching what to do. I wasn't able to develop my writing very well with her as my teacher. She also used students' papers as examples and critiqued them in class. If you don't like your writing to be shown to everyone, try a different teacher.
Took class as a 37 year old student who had experience. Hopkins would argue about everything. Told me I had misinterpreted an article we were writing about. I said I didn't, but rewrote because our grade was based on three articles. She critiqued again as non-responsive so I called the original writer. I was right and she was pissed. Avoid
Professor Hopkins is the reason I changed majors from Psychology to English. She is phenomenal. I have always loved English and found her class to be quite easy. Sometimes annoyingly easily. And yet she inspired me so much and helped me see possibilities for my future. She is intelligent and wants her students to develop themselves as people, too.
Her overall quality rating speaks for itself.
extremely disorganized Her instructions are confusing and when you ask her she never takes ownership and dismisses. She talks down to the entire class because "she has been a teacher for so long". If you are wanting a teacher who gives your final paper instructions stating it is 800 words then somewhere else is 1000 word essay she is your teacher.
I really liked her class! I appreciate how it was designed in a way that is very accommodating to the students. If you needed to turn something in late you can. Her criterion was very clear and she broke down the assignments well in her videos. She gave very helpful feedback and the workload was manageable. though I didn't like the class theme.
Mrs. Hopkins might seem accommodating at first but don't be fooled. She quickly locks you out of modules for minor mistakes and only responds after persistent emails. Her assignments reflect her own biases, pushing her political agenda onto students. Instead of focusing on relevant topics, she forces her interests on everyone. Avoid her if you can.
I loved taking her class and I felt like I learned a lot with her great feedback on my assignments. There was a pretty big final paper, but we had all quarter to work on it, as our learning revolved around the final paper. I always appreciated her feedback and she was a very great teacher, in my opinion.
I don't recommend taking this teacher if you don't have to. Her lectures are confusing, one paper will ask for a 500 word count and another of the same lecture will be 1200 word count. EVERY assignment I had I needed help with understanding what it was she was asking for. Lots of reading different stories and comparing them from one another.
Not many readings in this class. She answers emails pretty fast. The assignments were easy to do, and all she asks is for 300 words per writing assignment. As long as the directions are correctly followed, you should get a checkmark on the assignment. The only "big" assignment in class is the final. As long as you do your work on time, you'll pass.
I am now taking Hopkins for English 102 as well because I got so much out of her 101 class. She loves to help her students grow as writers. I have probably received 2,000 words worth of emails from her addressing my questions. My only two critiques: she manages to make everything about Trump and her workload is imbalanced.
Girl do not do it. This woman is crazy girl. She wanted to play these games and I'm paying her salary. She will call you dumb and then tell you it's how she teaches. She asked me if I knew what upload and download meant. Sit down cat lady.
SO so very specific. She's a nice lady, and eager/willing to help all students. However, she's very specific in essays/assignments. These small requirements and nit-picky way of completing things caused me to fail. She's difficult and a challenge, however very patient, understanding and helpful.
Claims Canvas is hard for her to understand, which causes confusion for you. She is paranoid about people using AI. never used it. But she did accuse me of it multiple times. For her final, I scored 20% on AI, but that mostly involved questions she added. She also wasn't the best at instructions. Don't recommend
Every in person day you have to meet sometimes in class you would have to work in groups, which could be something scary depending on a person. Professor Hopkins is a tough grader and sometimes leaves comments on your work, making you feel dumb if you don't do the assignment perfectly. I would not recommend her.
Honestly, Professor Hopkins is a good professor, she gives great and thorough advice. Some of my problems were how she changes the requirements on assignments without notice. Also for small mistakes especially on the final capstone paper, she will take almost 30 points off for missing one thing.
Professor Hopkins was not nice at all in my opinion. This lady would get on you for such poor writing my capstone paper took off 30% points off because she said my writing wasn't as good enough. Changes her direction very LAST MINUTE. I wouldn't take this class overall
