I was terrified to take speech. Shannon made it fun and totally doable. Her instructions were clear. And she tried to make everyone in the class feel comfortable. Really really good teacher.
Very good instructor. Young and talked on the same level as the students but still maintained authority in the class, very hard to do well. I really enjoyed this class, I don't care for speech much but I am not the shy type either. Mrs Padilla made the class tolerable and fun, if she taught something else I would definitely attend.
Great teacher for the dreaded speech class. Made it comfortable and she had the class interact so much that it was easier to talk in front of everyone. Would take her for any class.
I took this teach for 120 & 121. Good teacher. Show up for class to get points even though it is somewhat boring at times. About 7 speeches, know your topic and she will teach you the rest. Best class this semester, great vibes in the class room. She is respectful, yet sarcastic. Open minded, easy to get along with. Need I say more??
I was terrified of this class and took in a 3 week summer course. We had 7 speeches that went by very fast. Over all she made the class fun and relaxing. I feel that my speech has improved. Must show up&contribute to discussion to recieve a high grade.
Pretty good class. You do more speeches than other classes, but I think it's easier to learn that way :) My only issue is that the few times I've had to talk to Shannon after class she's been very blunt and almost rude. In class she's fine though. I'd recommend the class.
Shannon is awesome! You do more speeches than required, but you learn more that way. She teaches in a way so that the class learns a lot about each other resulting in feeling more comfortable around the class. This makes the speeches a lot easier and a lot less nerve racking. Her tests are very straight forward. Definitely going to miss that class.
Miss Padilla's class was interesting and exciting. Initially I was very nervous while giving speeches, yet over the course of the semester I grew to love it. The class was full of interesting speeches and people and Miss Padilla brought us together as a collective whole!
Shannon is a great speech teacher. Shes sweet and fairly funny, and works to make sure her students feel comfortable. She lets you choose all your speech topics and the guidelines are totally reasonable. Additionally, if you usually put in the effort for class, she is understanding when things come up. I recommend her!
Shannon Padilla is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had at DVC. Before I took Speech 120, I imagined that it would be a horrible class, but she actually made it fun and I looked forward to attending class everyday. I would HIGHLY recommend her. She is very helpful and funny. :)
Shannon was by far one of my favorite teachers I have had at DVC. I took her summer class, and I looked forward to class and to bettering my speeches. Group activities were helpful and Shannon was lovely the whole summer. Very understanding and helpful. If you have been avoiding speech, PLEASE let Shannon make it awesome!
Great teacher! Super funny and outgoing. Be prepared to work hard! Don't think you can write a speech the day it's due because she will notice and is not afraid to call you out. All in all a great class but you do 7 speeches (the most of all speech classes)
Shannon is one of the best teachers that I've had in my life. I absolutely love her energy! She is very straight forward, precise and flexible. If every teacher were like Shannon school would be a blast! Very very down to earth, young and hip. She feels like a sister more than a teacher. Couldn't have asked for a better teache taking 120 next sem
Very chill and awesome. Possibly the youngest DVC instructor I have seen on the campus thus far. Attendance is a HUGE part of your grade, so don't be absent or tardy. 7 speeches during the semester, which goes by pretty fast because they're all enjoyable. Prepare your speech outline ahead of time, & never during the day of a speech.
I didn't expect to like SPCH, but Shannon really made us feel comfortable in taking the class and actually finishing it. She didn't intimidate us, she just wanted to help us with getting through the class. Great teacher!
She gave me a chance when I absolutely did not deserve it at all. She is one of the FEW teachers who actually cares about her students. I never got to thank her for helping me pass the most feared subject ever, freaking speech. She was phenomenal. A definite thumbs up. She doesn't make you feel stupid or awkward. She is simply the best.
Ms. Padilla made me realize my public speaking skills were able to get me an A! She is extremely nice and helpful especially if you take her class during summer/online. I would really recommend her to anyone afraid of public speaking, she grades fairly and makes sure you improve your skills, she makes you feel comfortable all the time!
She was so awesome. She makes you feel really comfortable about speaking in front of the class. She is very approachable and friendly.
First day she had an attitude with me, rest of the semester she continued with this attitude. I did good on speeches yet attendance is a big part even when we were doing nothing! Very rude and showed no concern in me as a student. Even some of my classmates knew she disliked me but I won't take it personal due to her coming out with her pregnancy!
Although she is energetic and funny in class, she is a harsh grader. If you want an easy A, this is not the class for you. She is extremely strict on your attendance and participation. When I talked to her after class, she was very blunt and rude. She doesn't really care for her students.
Take her because she actually loves teaching, the class is very easy all you have to do is try your best. She is one of the best Speech professor's. She's always in a wonderful mood, I've never seen her angry. I highly recommend her for any course.
She is very helpful and is willing to work with a student that needs accommodations. She is also very energetic in class and makes it interesting and fun. Not a judgement tala teacher.
She made me fall in love with speech. She breaks down what she expects for each speech, never leaves you in the dark with choosing a topic. She's funny and will share past student speeches which was helpful with choosing my topics. There are 7 speeches in this class which is above the requirement but they are all fun. I would take more classes w
Great teacher. I was nervous approaching this class but it ended up being my favorite. she's understanding, hilarious, and very helpful. just work on improving and you're bound to do well in the class.
Great teacher! Understanding, professional, and allows humor. Her teaching can make any student who has stage fright end up being totally confident and successful when giving speeches. She's understanding with the fact that public speaking could be difficult for some people. Reach out to her and she'll help you. Fair grader you get what you deserve
I absolutely loved this class. We had 7 speeches through out the semester. Many people dropped out when they found out we would do that many, but for those who stayed, we learned a lot, and improved immensely. She was a great professor and made the class very comfortable to speak in front of. She grades based on your personal improvement.
I am glad for taking her Comm 121 class . She gave constructive feedback's and always encouraged students to personally improve with public speaking. She highly expects students to participate and have good attendance. I had fun doing the Ad analysis speech. Overall she is an excellent professor and I would recommend taking her class.
Loved this class so much. Took the 11 A.M. class this fall and it was so energetic, the way it should be unlike taking speech at 8 A.M. She is very clear on grading, stresses participation, and she gives close to free choice on your topic of speech. Most people need this class for credit, but Shannon's class in particular is needed for life!
She's the best!!! She seemed intimidating at first but she truly makes Public Speaking a class to enjoy. I dreaded the subject at first but taking it with her helped so much. I am taking COMM121 now with her. She really tries for everyone to bond and become friends to make the class easier to perform your speeches. Take her!
For someone who is very uncomfortable with public speaking, I actually felt more comfortable and had a fun time in this class. Mrs. Padilla was a great teacher and helped my public speaking improve greatly. I would take her class again.
For someone who is nervous of public speaking, she definitely helps get you out of your shell. She wants the whole class to participate, so don't skip class! But she was an amazing teacher, and I recommend her.
Shannon is awesome, and inspired me to major in Communications! Really clear lectures, and the speeches were super fun to share! Though, make sure you show up and on time, or else you'll get docked points. Overall, great class!
Shannon Padilla is one of the best teachers by far at DVC!!! Amazing over all. Her class is very straight forward and she makes the class so you don't have to stress or worry with your other classes. She is very understanding and really wants her students to do good. Takes this class, she's awesome. Though attendance is a must, her class is chill.
Ms. Padilla was a one-of-a-kind teacher. If you're afraid of speaking, she does her job very well. I took her class in the summer of 2014 so it was a 6 week class. However, learning to be up there speaking in front of people is hard, but she makes it comfortable for you to be up there. You make good friends in class and I would take her again.
Shannon Padilla's class is the product of great social skills and a true love of her job. Sometimes teachers have tough days or weeks, but she pushes through it with optimism and always finds the positive in things. This reflects in her constructive critiques and willingness to help you after class. Listen and your speech skills will skyrocket!
She's a great teacher. Took her Comm 120 during the summer and wish I could take her again! Its a very interesting class. If you do the work and participate, you'll pass with an A!
Show up and be ready to speak. She is very forgiving and helpful to shy speakers. Take, take, take. I had a bunch of fun.
I was terrified of taking this class and I already have bad anxiety. I mean it when I say that I am SO HAPPY that I signed up for professor Padilla's course. She does a great job at making everyone feel comfortable and gives great advice. You need to take this class to transfer and if you're afraid of public speaking, take it with her.
I was terrified of taking this class and I already have bad anxiety. However, I am SO HAPPY that I signed up for professor Padilla's course. She does a great job at making everyone feel comfortable and gives great advice. You can find the PDF version of her class book online for free, so that's a huge plus too. 7 speeches and 1 easy test.
TAKE HER!!!! She is such an amazing teacher! Even if you are terrified of public speaking, you will love this class! Looking forward to her Comm. 121 class in the Fall :)
Shannon Padilla is one of the best teachers that I have had in my community college experience. She is super friendly, grades fairly and leniently, and she will make you a better public speaker. If you don't skip class you will pass. The two tests given were very simple multiple choice with VERY CLEAR criteria on what to study.
The best teacher and my absolute favorite class. Her teaching style is hands-on, and as a student with ADD, I was amazed by the fact that I was not bored for even one second in her class. She made sure that the students interacted with each other, I know every person's name. I feel like I learned so much. I'm very thankful to have been in her class
Shannon is by far one of the best professors at DVC. Took her for both her Comm 120 and Comm 121 classes and both were equally amazing. Be careful though. If you're one of those people that likes to miss class, her class isn't for you. This is because she grades for attendance/participation.
Shannon is awesome! I was terrified to take a public speaking class, but she gives so much good advice, and made everyone feel so comfortable. Show up, do your work, participate, and you'll learn a lot and get a good grade!
I just finished her COMM-120 class and just like someone else said, I too have really bad anxiety and was terrified of public speaking, but Mrs. Padilla is truly amazing! If you skip class, you won't pass. This is an easy A for someone who can show up on time and doesn't procrastinate on preparing for their speech. I would take her class again!
If public speaking isn't your thing, she'll help you overcome that fear. She's a great professor who gives great lectures and is willing to help you out when needed. Easily accessible over e mail. You have to show up on your speech day or she'll take off points unless you give her a really good excuse.
I was dreading taking public speaking for the longest time, but I decided to take it with Shannon over the summer half online. It was 6 weeks and you just show up one day a week and give a speech. Overall 3 speeches and one interview which was really fun. Shannon made taking this class so much fun and I began to look forward to it
Shannon is amazing! She gives great feedback after speeches! Even if you are afraid of public speaking, she makes sure that you are well-prepared and makes you feel comfortable while you are speaking.
Shannon is very approachable and wants every single person to succeed. She gives complete freedom with choice of speech topics and always asks for feedback on if you liked/didn't like assignments etc. Participation is important and speech days are critical. No textbook, only handouts. One exam that is super easy and minimal lecturing.
Such a great professor! Shannon is very easy going. If you attend every class, ***participate every class***, attend speech days, you'lol get an A. 2 exams that are not that hard. Gotta take her!
TAKE HER CLASS. I took the hybrid course; only met 5 times and there's not that much work outside of class. 3 speeches, 1 interview, 1 essay, 2 tests. Easy A if you do the work. If you're terrified of public speaking, take this class. She is so encouraging, cool, understanding, funny. I have stage fright so bad and I still got an A. She is awesome!
FAVORITE PROFESSOR BY FAR. She makes her students feel like they matter. She makes it a point to get to know all of her students. 7 speeches that have very clear instructions. You take 2 exams that are very easy. Show up every class, participate, and you'll have a great semester. Definitely take!!
Shannon is AMAZING! She really helped to grow out of my comfort zone. You give 7 speeches, (some classes only make you speak 3 times) but in her class we went up often. She really wants to see you succeed! She dosen't lecture too much and you dont need to buy the book because it is online (pdf). HIGHLY recommend Shannon if you want to improve!
Hybrid class, met once a week for speeches. Easy class with very clear instructions on what was expected of students, she helps people who struggle with public speaking a lot. Recommends people for speech and debate, very nice and understanding.
Shannon is awesome. She is very clear with her instructions and isn't that tough of a grader as long as you get up there and speak. She's funny and interesting. Highly recommend her especially for your critical thinking GE requirement.
I was so excited to take this class given Shannon's amazing reviews on here!! Sadly, I did not enjoy this semester with her. She is an extremely tough grader on speeches. She also assigned many speeches throughout the semester. If you're new to public speaking and want to get an A... don't take Shannon
Took her for Comm180 online class. Clear grading criteria. She will have you post weekly on class discussion boards and reply to other students posts, but as long as you put in an effort, you should get A's on basically everything. All quizzes and final are open book. Weekly quiz, weekly homework assignment, consistently due on the same days.
Wonderful online class! Super clear instructions, and her assignments aren't too much work. I definitely recommend her. I learned a lot from her class, yet, it wasn't too stressful at all honestly.
Super Easy A class!!! Quizes every Tuesday and Assignment every Friday! Plus one final and midterm both consist of mcqs and short answer essays!
Her comm121 is difficult for those unfamiliar with speech. Unless you have good experience with speech or talented in speaking, you will find it difficult.
Mrs. Padillas class is a lot of fun. She is funny and makes it easy to want to participate. Speeches start out short and simple and get a bit more intense over time, giving you a chance to learn and grow. Shes supportive and takes time to get to know her students. My class bonded quite a bit as we got to know each other. It was a great experience
She is awesome. Super clear instructions, and she likes participation. Always very responsive to emails/inboxing. Quizzes/tests match very well with the reading so they're easy to take. She gave feedback on most assignments which I liked. Overall very nice and a non-stressful class that made learning the material easy.
Prof. Padilla is awesome. She gives excellent feedback on all of your speeches and is great at fostering a supportive class environment. Taking her class was one of the best experiences I had at DVC.
Professor Padilla has been one of my favorite profs during my entire Diablo Valley College experience. She provides clear and effective feedback and, even though she is one of the busiest people on the planet, makes your class feel as though they are the only class that matters. There is a lot of group work, but even as an introvert, I survived.
I took her online course, and it was a pretty good experience. You have weekly assignments due Tuesdays and Fridays which are never too difficult or time-consuming. There are quizzes most weeks but they are pretty easy. Overall, if you have a requirement to fulfill, Id definitely recommend her online class!
By far the BEST comm teacher. She makes giving speeches comfortable and absolutely love the class dynamic she fosters. Very easy class- there was a total of 7-8 speeches with outlines, two easy short essays, and two tests that she gives study guides for. 10 points deducted per absence though so show up.
Mrs. Shannon Padilla is an excellent teacher, and she cares deeply for her students and their performance.
I truly feel like I could speak in front of a crowd after this class.
Shes the best teacher to have for this class because she will be understanding if you have a problem with speaking in public but if you show up and do your best then its an easy class to take.
Probably the easiest classes Ive ever taken in my life. If youre smart and just do your work as she requires it is almost impossible for you not to get an A. HIGHY RECOMMEND
I take it as an online class. It's easy, but I don't have a good experience with her. She sometimes gives a lot of work in a week and sometimes gives nothing. I rather have an average amount of work each week. She doesn't always reply to my email and doesn't fix my grade even after I went to her office hour. She doesn't give comments on assignment.
Solid professor, very hands on and clear cut in her expectations for your speeches. Easy A and provides many extra credit opportunities. She takes a while to respond to emails. No textbook required, she hands out the pages we're reading.
You do more speechs than the other public speaking classes(7 total), but the first 3 are super easy & she lets you choose whatever topic to speak about. She doesnt use canvas so if you want to know your grade, see her in office hours. Overall great teacher and shes super funny! She helps you get over the fear of speaking in front of people!
I highly recommend taking public speaking from Shannon. 7 total speeches, 2 tests, and a couple of other small assignments throughout the semester. I really liked her class and saw lots of improvement in my speaking as the semester went on. Attendance: mandatory. Take this class if you want to get better at public speaking. Everyone improved.
Take Shannon for sure! 3 speeches ( 3-4min, 4-5min, + 6-8min). Very easy intro speech on first day followed by easy panel interview on last day (no prep required for these two). She always gives positive feedback first, followed by room for improvement tips. Put effort into your outline. You can read from it, but make sure to make eye contact.
3 exams(including final), on average two assignments per week, quiz every week. The class is easy and definitely manageable over the summer. The exams and quizzes are easy, reading the textbook helps but isn't super necessary(you still have to buy/rent it), and the assignments are graded leniently. I took this and another class during summer.
Mrs. P is amazing and I never felt uncomfortable speaking in front of her, she gives great feedback to know what to do better, is very fair with grading, and responds quickly if you ever have any questions. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS. Attendance is a huge part of the class because if you skip a certain amount of classes your grade will drop.
I have been very impressed by all of the communications department professors. What I like about Shannon specifically is that she provides very in-depth feedback that is very useful in improving persuasion tactics and public speaking as a whole. The written assignments are straightforward, she is very understanding, and makes do with COVID limits.
Very organized online class and considerate of difficulties. She gives really good feedback and grades pretty quickly.
Ive been going to DVC for a year now and Ms. Padilla is the best teacher Ive had and her class was so much fun. She offers insightful feedback, is always willing to answer questions, and is very encouraging. Assignments are very straightforward, I recommend picking unique speech topics that you are passionate about!
Everything is learned through the textbook. No lecture videos. Padilla assigns 2x the amount of work an English teacher would. There is essay after essay after essay. Expect any emails sent never to be read. Fails to communicate with students herself. Ironic. Need to make several videos of yourself in this class. I don't recommend.
Professor Padilla was amazing, super caring. This course was very informative and I learned a lot. You do need to read the textbook but I was able to find it online which made the assignments pretty easy. I would definitely take this class again
I took the accelerated course and it was honestly really easy. Total of 4 speeches with discussions and reflection essays sprinkled in. Padilla is nice and gives feedback when full credit isn't given. She offers several chances for extra credit. This class was a breeze.
I took this class as a part of the regular 16-week semester. This class wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, I had to work to get my A. She gives assignments to prepare for your speeches and there are a total of 4 speeches. She grades slightly on the harsher side and it seemed more like a writing class than a speech class.
Padilla was an easy-going teacher and we had texts but they were all open-book. If you follow the rubric for the speeches and practice, you will get a good grade. I recommend taking this online if you are easily anxious in public speaking because you record your speeches instead and it's way easier.
I thought she was cool. Still got an A despite not getting a grade on both of the exams. She also gives you three points every time u show up the lecture. So don't skip. She did grade a little hard on the informative speech. But in my experience she graded pretty chill on the others. Not a heavy workload. But speech prep is most of ur hw.
Shannon is super nice and funny! The workload is not very heavy but be prepared to spend a lot of time prepping for speeches. U do have a textbook. But u only use it twice to study for both exams. Kind of a waste of money tbh. She grades a little the hard side for the speeches. Best way to get a good grade is to be confident and clear.
Super kind and teaches a lot not only about public speaking but also about life:)
Took her online class and it was easy and not too difficult. There were no mandatory meetings but just make sure to stay on top of the assignments. The assignments were straight forward and it was easy to stay on top of.
It's not that hard there's just a lot of reading and then writing a couple paragraphs to summarize and give your ideas and then connecting to something from the textbook. It feels more like an english course than a comm one.
Shannon's class was by far my favorite class I took this semester. Although she grades speeches very toughly, she does it out of the best interest of her students. My speech skills have improved 100% thanks to her class. Although public speaking can be scary, Shannon creates a warm environment in her class that makes it easier to do.
Extremely caring professor. She definitely made me a better public speaker with her encouraging feedback. She creates a lovely class environment, and provides a good amount of EC. If your not confident in your public speaking skills, then I strongly recommend this professor.
The Best Professor at DVC. This was my first semester and I had an amazing time in this class. Her class was very fun, and I never felt bored. Take her if you want to breeze through public speaking. She is awesome!!! She creates a friendly environment. Also offers a lot of extra credit. I will miss her class, she's amazing!! Take her class!!
It made my socially anxious self into a really good speaker. 10/10 teacher if you want to be eased into speaking in front of a group. Shannon was a goated teacher and very funny, you should totally take her if you can.
Although I find this class easy, she never really taught me how to actually get better at public speaking. Also, she took off points here and there for ridiculous reasons.
cant complain about the work load because the class was super simple and easy going. Downside is she WILL take of unnecessary points for NO absolute reason. I could have had an A if it weren't for her stingy grading technique but at least I pass. Ive taken two speech classes and I prefer her, Take this professor over the other male one at DVC.
Good professor, made public speaking easy. She's a bit nitpicky when it comes to grading, but she wants all of her students to succeed. Attendance is mandatory, and she will deduct points every day if you're late or on your phone. If you're worried about public speaking take her class, she will make it a breeze.
She's very nice and funny. She made the class very fun. For every speech, you are able to choose the day you want to go and in what order you want to go on the actual day, so it is useful for scheduling your speech days around tests for other classes.
